A BREATH OF FRESH AIR: HBOT in Durango

REAP THE BENEFITS AND BREATHE EASIER WITH HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY.

ARTICLE BY GEORGE GLASS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SEAN MORIARTY AND GEORGE GLASS

George and Lori Ann Glass arrived in Durango in 2010 with their two daughters, Ayana, age six, and Giselle, age two. The decision to move from Vermont to Colorado was a lifestyle choice. “Durango had everything we were looking for in a setting supportive of our family and our professional life.” they shared. In 2014, Anna and Lily, their “purebred mutts,” were added to the family through adoption from the LPCHS. George, Lori Ann, and the girls are currently volunteering with The Durango Derailers and Our Own Lives as their way of giving back to the Durango community. In addition, George volunteers for the Colorado state chapter of their professional organization.

After working in a medical massage therapy practice for two years, George and Lori Ann ventured off on their own, opening Glass & Glass Bodywork in 2012. Now in its twelfth year, Glass & Glass provides Advanced Orthopedic care, while George and Lori Ann have shifted their focus to CranioSacral Therapy (CST). George and Lori Ann have a combined over sixty years in the health care field and more than 4,000 hours in advanced education in the field of massage therapy. CONTINUED

In 2018, Lori Ann was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) following several concussions over many years. Dr. Searfus, MD, then pointed to “baby blue,” a medical-grade, hardsided hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) chamber, which was sitting in the corner of our health center, and said, “There is your treatment.” Paul Mattson, who owned the chamber, graciously trained George on the chamber’s operation, and Lori Ann committed to a baseline TBI treatment program. Midway through the program, Lori Ann’s TBI-related symptoms had largely abated, and by the end of the program, Lori Ann said she “had not felt this good since her mid-twenties.”

It was at this point that Paul asked George and Lori Ann if they were interested in reopening Mountain Hyperbarics here in Durango. Previously, Paul owned and operated Mountain Hyperbarics in Frisco, Colorado, from 20072014. George and Lori Ann responded with an emphatic yes!

The Glasses opened Mountain Hyperbarics in June of 2018 with the support of Paul Mattson, and Dr. Searfus agreed to take on the role as Medical Director. Over the past six years, Mountain Hyperbarics has grown to include a mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber in addition to the medical chamber. The clinic has also added Dr. Emmy Lawrson-Kobobel, DO, who provides medical intakes along with Dr. Searfus.

Brain Health Coaching Certification, and Lori Ann is studying with Dr. Cathleen King, DPT, to deepen her knowledge of neurological regulation and brain training.

Mountain Hyperbarics offers HBOT, which is a natural and non-invasive treatment. HBOT is a researched and documented therapy for neurological disorders, immune system disorders, metabolic imbalances, vascular diseases and injuries, longevity and wellness, boosting athletic performance, recovery, and healing from injuries, and acclimating elevation or treatment of altitude sickness.

Lori Ann’s TBI treatment left her saying, ‘I hadn’t felt this good since my mid-twenties.

Mountain Hyperbarics is proud to support our veterans through a collaboration with America’s Mighty Warriors’ Helping Heroes Heal program, providing veterans with HBOT treatment for traumatic brain injuries (TBI), post-concussive syndrome (PCS), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at no charge. Mountain Hyperbarics also provides mHBOT at 50% off for all veterans in our “no veteran left behind” program. Mountain Hyperbarics also works with folks who may not be able to afford HBOT without financial assistance.

Glass & Glass Bodywork and Mountain Hyperbarics develop treatments or programs on an individual basis. Each person’s program is related to the individual’s health history and their goals of treatment.

Currently, George and Lori Ann are studying brain health and neurological regulation to further support their clients and patients. George is studying with Dr. Daniel Amen, MD, moving towards a

IMPROV CLASSES GO BEYOND GIGGLES, FOSTERING GROWTH AND AUTHENTICITY

Act Up, Be You, Feel Better

Letting loose and embracing the unexpected—improv at its finest!

Mastering the art of contrast—when joy meets despair in improv magic!

ARTICLE BY JENNIFER MASON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDY WINGERD
…you get to bring alive whole other versions of you— better, stronger, truer

versions…

Boxing matches, a zoo overrun by maniacal monkeys, the grocery store dairy aisle, and the first day at boot camp. Oh, the places you’ll go in a single class at Lower Left Improv!

“Improv, to me is Yes-And’ing,” says owner Mary Quinn, referring to improv’s one immutable commandment: Thou shalt answer ‘yes, and…’ to all statements. Improv actors never reject what their collaborators generate on the spot; instead, they agree and pour fuel on the fire.

Improv instructor Sarah Syverson agrees, adding the group’s core guideline, “Everyone’s a genius, an artist, a poet. Think of everyone that you play with as that. There’s power in that.”

Lower Left launched in 2022 and swiftly expanded from a handful of eager students to an intricate scaffolding of multi-level beginner and intermediate classes all packed to the gills. The group stages performances on the second Friday of each month and can be found generating guffaws at the Durango Arts Center and the Sunflower Theater in Cortez. Students train with a deep bench of star-studded professionals whose bona fides include the hallowed comedy proving grounds of Chicago’s Second City, New York’s Upright Citizens Brigade, and other renowned centers in the U.S. and abroad.

While it’s easy to suppose such lessons are reserved for extroverts longing for fame in Tinsel Town, both Quinn and Syverson insist that their improv classes are for absolutely everyone. They point to a host of interpersonal skillsets and mental/emotional benefits gleaned from improv participation.

First off, the games and activities are neurological calisthenics. In one game, commands suddenly take on opposite or unexpected meanings. Go means stop.

Stop means go. Hop means clap. Clap means hop. The difficulty short circuits the brain and spurs lots of laughter.

Other activities work players through escalating stages of emotions, from mild to extreme. These progressions provide a safe means of moving genuine emotions. Through improv, participants experience deep self-discovery and self-awareness that serves them out in the real world. According to Quinn, ordinary individuals learn how to wield their anxiety as a superpower.

Quinn also finds that a lot of savvy supervisors take improv to boost their leadership skills or buoy their knack for cultivating teamwork. Entire office cohorts have taken improv classes to cultivate healthier office dynamics.

“Yes, [improv] is about being funny or humorous, but really, I think improv is about finding your authentic self.” Quinn attests. She goes on noting, “Because it gives you space to let go of all that you carry, you get to hit the pause button on being the day-to-day you and bring alive whole other versions of you—better, stronger, truer versions that have never been unleashed.”

Syverson highlights the benefits of cultivating a yes-and mindset, stating, “It just creates such curiosity. There’s an opportunity to actually find [yes-and] in the world, after you leave class and go to the grocery store and find that with the cashier or with your neighbor in the bank.”

Unique among comedy centers which tend to be male-dominated and competitive, Lower Left is spearheaded by women and institutes kindness, community, and an I’ve-got-your-back attitude into all of its classes and performances. Look for Lower Left’s fresh batch of classes early February plus a special Valentine’s Day performance at the DAC.

RESILIENCE AND CLARITY

THROUGH SHADOW WORK

As we approach 2025, the challenges of our times—political and social divisions, economic uncertainty, and personal struggles—can leave us feeling stuck, disconnected, or overwhelmed. Yet, amid chaos lies an opportunity for transformation: reclaiming resilience, finding clarity, and creating a life filled with meaning.

I’m Cindy Schmidt, a master Jungian Life and Relationship Coach. I guide individuals on journeys of self-discovery through Jungian psychology, shadow work, and Eastern philosophy. My approach blends gentle self-inquiry, practical tools, and compassionate support to help you align with your authentic self and live with greater clarity and purpose.

UNCOVER HIDDEN STRENGTHS AND INNER PEACE FOR 2025

ARTICLE BY CINDY SCHMIDT

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALLISON RAGSDALE

PHOTOGRAPHY AND KYLA JENKINSON

WHAT IS THE SHADOW?

The shadow, a concept introduced by Carl Jung, represents the unconscious parts of ourselves that we suppress or deny—often because they feel uncomfortable, unacceptable, or unworthy. These hidden aspects may include emotions like anger or fear, as well as repressed talents and desires.

When left unexamined, the shadow shapes our thoughts, actions, and relationships in unconscious ways. By bringing these hidden parts into the light, we unlock profound self-awareness, gaining clarity and resilience to face life’s challenges authentically.

WHY SHADOW WORK MATTERS NOW

The challenges we face today often reflect our inner struggles. Division and blame frequently arise from projecting our disowned shadow onto others. For example, criticizing someone else’s arrogance might reveal our own fear of being seen or a hidden desire for confidence. Shadow work invites us to reclaim these disowned parts, fostering personal and collective healing. Integrating the shadow helps us build resilience, emotional maturity, and a deeper alignment with our values.

BY INTEGRATING THE SHADOW, WE BUILD RESILIENCE, EMOTIONAL MATURITY,

AND THE ABILITY TO LIVE IN ALIGNMENT WITH OUR VALUES.

HOW I GUIDE CLIENTS THROUGH SHADOW WORK

Shadow work can feel intimidating, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. As a coach, I create a safe and compassionate space to explore your inner world. We start by identifying your patterns, triggers, and areas where you feel stuck or disconnected. Together, we uncover the shadow aspects underlying these challenges. We use tools such as visualization, guided self-reflection, and dream work to deepen awareness and begin integrating your shadow into conscious life. This process isn’t about “fixing” yourself—it’s about embracing your wholeness, both light and dark, and making choices that reflect your true self.

STARTING YOUR SHADOW WORK JOURNEY

If you’re ready to begin, here are simple steps to explore your shadow:

• Notice Your Triggers

What frustrates or annoys you in others? These reactions often point to shadow aspects within yourself.

• Reflect on Recurring Patterns

Think about repeated conflicts or behaviors that hinder your growth. These patterns often stem from unresolved shadow dynamics.

• Ask Powerful Questions

• What am I afraid to acknowledge about myself?

• What beliefs no longer serve me?

• How might embracing my shadow help me grow?

Journaling on these questions can reveal insights and help you begin integrating your shadow.

CREATING A VISION FOR 2025

Shadow work empowers you to envision and create a life aligned with your deepest values. Start by setting clear intentions for the year ahead. Consider what you want your relationships, career, health, and personal growth to look like. Align your actions with these intentions, and practice self-compassion as you navigate challenges along the way.

A CALL TO HEALING AND CONNECTION

While shadow work is deeply personal, its impact extends beyond the individual. Taking responsibility for our shadow reduces blame and builds understanding and connection. Imagine a world where more people embraced this level of self-awareness—it starts with each of us.

If you’re ready to explore your shadow and envision a more meaningful 2025, I’d love to help. Together, we can build the resilience, clarity, and alignment you need to embody your highest potential.

INDULGE NATURALLY: A RICH, NO-BAKE CHOCOLATE TREAT PACKED WITH NUTRIENTS

ARTICLE BY HEATHER HINSLEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSHUA HOFFMAN

Raw desserts have gained popularity for their fresh, nutrient-packed qualities— indulge in sweets without the traditional baking. The guiding principle of raw food focuses on keeping preparation temperatures low (below 111°F).

This helps preserve the natural enzymes, vitamins, and minerals in the ingredients, which can be lost in higher-heat cooking and baking. High-quality protein powder (SarvaaOrganics.com) boosts the nutritional value. Chocolate lovers don’t have to compromise digestibility and nutrient absorption.

By keeping the ingredients “raw,” pastry chef

Heather Hinsley of Delicious Details delivers nutritional integrity—letting the flavors and textures shine through in a pure, unprocessed way. Raw desserts are made with wholesome, minimally processed ingredients—nuts, seeds, fruits, and natural sweeteners. The result? A nourishing dessert without glycemic spikes. Advantages: Raw and no-bake desserts tend to be gluten-free, dairy-free, and refined sugar-free, making them ideal for a variety of dietary preferences that are a delicious, nutrient-packed option for any occasion.

Unlocking Wellness: The Gentle Power of Craniosacral Therapy

CranioSacral therapy (CST) is a gentle, non-invasive hands-on treatment that aims to restore balance to the nervous system and surrounding structures. Durango Elemental Therapy combines CranioSacral therapy with deep study in anatomy, physiology, yoga therapy and energy work to guide the tissues of the body back to their natural, healthy, pain-free state.

• What it’s used for CST can help with a wide range of conditions, including headaches, chronic pain or disturbances in any part of the body, as well as post-concussion syndrome. It can also help with stress-related conditions, emotional imbalances, and musculoskeletal disorders.

• How it works

CST improves fluid circulation to help ease restrictions and manipulates body rhythms within the nervous system, both of which can relieve compression in the musculoskeletal system especially in the lower back, head, and spinal column.

• Who it is for

CST is suitable for everyone from babies to the elderly. It’s often used by pregnant women, and mothers and babies for problems associated with difficult or traumatic births or athletes who wish to speed injury recovery time.

• What to expect

During or after a session, you may feel calm and energized, with increased clarity of mind and a feeling of well-being. The effects roll out over a week or two weeks as your body absorbs and applies the treatment.
