Renewed & Inspired

Welcome to a new year with fresh perspectives! It’s always exciting to kick off Mardi Gras season with joyful parades and a renewed spirit of giving back to the community. This time of year also inspires setting new goals, fostering personal growth, and prioritizing mental and physical health.

In this month’s issue, our cover story highlights an exhilarating sport celebrated worldwide: foiling. Every year, enthusiasts gather across the globe to showcase their skills on the water. This year, we are thrilled to welcome them to Pensacola at the end of February for an unforgettable week. We hope it’s the first of many visits.

As we delve into health and aging, we explore diverse approaches to wellness. From traditional Western medicine, including doctors and pharmaceuticals, to Eastern traditions and natural remedies, the options are vast. In today’s age of technology, new methods emerge, offering even more ways to address personal needs. It’s all about discovering what works best for you and embracing a tailored path to healing.

One inspiring feature in this issue is the story of a local business owner who transformed her health journey. After struggling with chronic pain despite surgeries and medications, she turned to alternative methods that not only improved her well-being but also shaped her career. Her testimony, along with her clients’ experiences, showcases a new era of healing possibilities.

We also take a step back in time to explore the natural remedies of our ancestors, who used herbs, leaves, and fungi to treat everything from fatigue to anxiety. In particular, we highlight the healing properties of mushrooms and their modern-day value in wellness practices.

This month’s issue celebrates health and wellness in every form—for ourselves, our families, and our community. We hope it inspires you to consider new ways to enhance your well-being and access healing.

Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year and a joyous Lunar New Year. May this year bring you inspiration, knowledge, and a commitment to wellness as a lifestyle.

Foiling

FOR THE FIRST TIME, THEY ARE GOING INTERNATIONAL:

IN PENSACOLA

PHOTOGRAPHY BY WE ARE FOILING MEDIA

Many beach towns experience a lull in activities in the colder months, in Pensacola that’s not the case. Our events committee is a strong team that makes sure we’re thriving all year long. This year they’ve taken things to new heights or some would say Pensacola will be making a big splash. From February 24-March 2nd 2025 for the first time Pensacola, FL we welcome Foiling week. There is so much to share about this awesome display of athleticism and beauty but first let’s define what Foiling is.

Foiling is a water sport where a board or boat is lifted above the water by a hydrofoil, allowing the rider to glide across the water. The hydrofoil is a long fin with wings that extend into the water, and works similarly to an airplane wing. As the board moves forward, water flows over the foil’s wings, creating lift that raises the board out of the water.

Foiling has a beautiful history, and a vibrant relevance in today’s modern world. The first foiling boat was trademarked in 1869. Early foilers experienced difficulties in the efficiency and longevity of their sailing excursions. Since then foiling has developed into a very creative, innovative, active sport. In 2024 Foiling made its Olympic Debut solidifying its position as a sport recognized around the world.

Foiling week was founded by Luca Rizzotti, it is a celebration of the first and unique global event dedicated to the amazingly fast foiling boats, to their sailors, designers, and manufacturers. Historically for over 10 years since the inception of Foiling week, the event was held in Malcesine, on Lake Garda, Italy.

This year the organization “We Are Foiling” decided to bring Foiling Week to Pensacola for several reasons. Let’s explore why Pensacola is a great location for Foiling week. In order to have a successful foiling excursion you need water that is at least 5 feet deep and

free from debris that would induce crashing like rocks and other hard surface obstructions. You also need flat calm water. Also sharks are least active in the fall and winter seasons so the February 24-March 2nd 2025 time frame is perfect.

There are various types of foiling boards hydrofoils which are powered by water. E-foil boards are quiet, emission-free, and environmentally friendly boards where the electric motor is powered by a rechargeable battery and is controlled by a wireless remote. The hydrofoil lifts the board out of the water, which reduces friction and energy consumption. E-foils can reach speeds of up to 28 miles per hour. The battery can run for up to an hour or more, depending on the rider’s size and the speed set.

E-FOILS WEATHER CONDITIONS

E-foiling is not dependent on weather conditions like surfing, so you can enjoy it more often. The practice of SUP (Stand Up Paddle) Foiling consists of flying with a Stand-Up-Paddle board mounted on a Foil, and using a paddle to gain speed to take off. The volume of the board allows you to start directly standing while paddling with the paddle to catch a wave. Wind wing foiling refers to the inflatable wing used when foiling, essentially, it’s the primary component that captures wind to propel the rider in wing foiling, similar to how a sail works in windsurfing, but with much greater freedom of movement due to its detached design. The wind wing acts like a kite, harnessing wind power to generate thrust and lift the rider onto the foil. These wings are typically inflatable, with a large surface area and multiple struts for stability, and can be adjusted in size depending on wind conditions. Compared to traditional windsurfing rigs, wind wings offer more maneuverability, easier learning curve, and the ability to ride in lighter wind conditions.

Foiling has a beautiful history, and a vibrant relevance in today’s modern world. The first foiling boat was trademarked in 1869.

Foiling week is an excellent opportunity to have a new experience on the water.

Pensacola is the chosen city for Foiling Week to make its international debut.

During Foiling Week you will be able to learn more about foiling, visit with vendors, and watch the race at Community Maritime Park Public Marina. 301 W Main Street. There will be trails, workshops, clinics, music, parties and more. The Foiling Week team has a longstanding tradition of selecting a social impact theme for each event. For Pensacola 2025, the chosen theme is Regeneration—a holistic approach to addressing the climate crisis. This vision integrates biodiversity, human dignity, justice, and climate action into a unified framework of transformative efforts aimed at resolving the climate crisis within a single generation.

Foiling Week offers a unique and exciting opportunity to experience the thrill of being on the water in an entirely new way. Whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this event is designed to captivate and inspire.

For the first time, Foiling Week is making its international debut in the vibrant city of Pensacola, a location known for its stunning waterfront and welcoming community. This premier event promises to bring together innovation, adventure, and fun, making it the perfect occasion to create lasting memories.

Don’t miss the chance to join in the excitement and be a part of Foiling Week’s global journey!

Birdyfish

Birdyfish is a concentrate of technology from racing at the service of sailing. A sum of details that together make this foil boat easy, fast and stable. The self-regulating J-foils which, in addition to making the dinghy fly, also contribute to the righting. The physical dimension of the crew does not become a condition for taking off.  www.birdyfish.com/en/ birdyfish-english/

Nacra 15 FCS

Designed from scratch to the ISAF criteria to become the new official ISAF youth catamaran, the Nacra 15 resembles a lot to its bigger sister, the Olympic Nacra 17. In fact, the Nacra 15 is a mini version of the Olympic Nacra 17, creating a pathway towards the Olympics. The Nacra 15 FCS version includes a fully foiling setup, which means it is equipped with foils that allow it to lift out of the water and “fly” in the right wind conditions. This reduces drag and significantly increases speed compared to the regular displacement sailing mode. www.nacra15class.com

The ‘Shroom Boom’ and why medicinal mushrooms are taking the global market by storm

Let’s talk About The Magic Of Mushrooms

What are they all about?

Medicinal mushrooms have been used and studied for centuries in Eastern medicine. Only in the past 4 years have we seen them flood the global market.  The ‘Shroom Boom’ has taken the health world by storm, with one market research company saying sales would go from $8 billion in 2020 to $19.3 in 2030. The benefits of these widely revered functional mushrooms have been said to help with what most of us are concerned with on a daily basis - Mental focus, gut health, anxiety, stress and immune support. While this may be true, we are still waiting for more trials to verify their benefits.

Who are they for?

These mushrooms can be taken in a variety of different forms. Whether a powder that goes into a hot drink, capsules, or a tincture (liquid), all will work, but as with everything look at the fine print.  You want to look for the majority of whatever form you are taking to be mainly the fruiting body of the mushroom.

Lion’s Mane: Mental Focus, Gut Health, Memory, Proactive.

• Who is it best for? Those who need help with focus, concentration, brain fog.

Reishi: Heart Health, Anxiety, Sleep.

• Who is it best for? Those suffering from anxiety, depression, high blood sugar, high cholesterol and insomnia.

Turkey Tail: Immunity, Insulin Resistance, Prebiotic.

• Who is it best for? Those with autoimmune diseases, insulin resistance, immune resistance and IBS.

Dispelling the Myths:

Will they make me hallucinate?

These mushrooms do not  contain psilocybin or psilocin, which is the active ingredient in the mushrooms that makes one hallucinate.

Are they safe for me to take?

There have been, and continue to be, many studies on the health benefits of medicinal mushrooms alongside pharmaceutical drugs. The research is ongoing and one should always seek the advice of a medical professional.

When will I feel the benefits of mushrooms?

Some feel the benefit of these mushrooms after a few days. Studies show this with Lion’s mane, but studies have found people notice real effects in 2-3 months.

Turkey Tail: Immunity, Insulin Resistance, Prebiotic
Lion's Mane: Mental Focus, Gut Health, Memory, Proactive
Reishi: Heart Health, Anxiety, Sleep

OsteoStrong

Strengthening Your Body From the Inside Out

Pensacola isn’t just a dot on the map—it’s a town fueled by innovation and home to cutting-edge facilities led by some of the nation’s top professionals. With over 75 workout facilities, numerous running clubs, and a vibrant military community that includes over 35,000 retirees, health and wellness are integral to the city’s culture. As Pensacola’s population ages, many residents are seeking effective ways to maintain or develop strength that stands the test of time.

OsteoStrong is an innovative facility designed to help rebuild and strengthen bone density. But what exactly is bone density? It’s a measure of the mineral content in your bones, which determines their strength and resistance to fractures. When bone density decreases significantly, it can lead to osteoporosis—a condition often called “the silent disease” because it typically goes unnoticed until a bone density test reveals it.

By the time we reach our 40s, our bodies naturally begin to lose bone mineral content. This makes it the perfect time to consider proactive measures to maintain and rebuild bone health. OsteoStrong offers 7 patented programs aimed at helping individuals build stronger bones, improve overall strength, and age with confidence.

If you are looking for a scientifically backed approach to bone health, Osteostrong might be the key to unlocking a stronger, healthier, you.

Best of all, Osteostrong results are not limited to only increasing bone density but improving blood flow, flexibility, balance, mental activity, and many more life changing benefits.

CAN NON-ALCOHOLIC DRINKS REPLACE ALL ASPECTS OF WINE

Wellness Through Wine

ARTICLE BY ALEX BOYKIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALEX BOYKIN/PROVIDED
“Continue to forge yourself into the best possible version you can.”

Will you be abstaining from alcohol this month in the name of health? That seems to be the thing to do; using the New Year to kickstart your mind and body into the best possible version of You. I applaud the effort! In our “quick-fix world” most look for the easiest means to that end. Many choose a new gym membership, yet statistics show that the average gym membership started in January lasts a whopping 59 days! The next easy target; Alcohol. The global trend of not drinking alcohol in January is not new. A result of this trend has been the upsurgence of Non-Alcoholic drinks (NAs). Can NAs fill the wine void? Are there other aspects of giving up wine that you should consider?

I have spent my fair share of time not drinking alcohol, although those periods were forced due to location and not by choice. Many great people that I worked with, upon returning home, swore off alcohol, touting how good they now felt and how much weight was lost. The top drink culprit in most of those cases was beer. Not being a beer drinker and never one to drink in excess I never experienced those sobering revelations. There are well documented health benefits to giving up alcohol. Research shows that consuming even small amounts of alcohol is bad for your health. The alcohol industry has been paying attention, releasing ever better NAs. I have had some great NA beer, cider, and cocktails, but wine… To be clear, there is no such thing as a NA spirit, like Tequila, nor will there ever be. Blame science for that.

I have spoken with people who tell me that they have found a great NA wine, and I have tried a lot of them. If you have found a NA wine that you like, I envy you! I have tried several that were palatable, best used as a mixer in something like a Mimosa. The rest did not belong in your mouth! Again, blame science, we just haven’t cracked the code to good NA wine. As the level of alcohol increases, the harder it is to replicate that “palatory” experience. Because of that nothing has yet come close to the full sensory experience of a beautifully balanced Bordeaux, or a pleasurable Paso Syrah. There was a New York Times article back in October by Boris Fishman titled “You’ll Have to Take My Glass From My Cold, Wine-Stained Hand.” He captured the thrill of wine by saying “…wine is a passport to transcendence. If water is life-giving, wine is psychedelic. Sometimes, the aroma alone is enough to kick off the time travel.” This echoes the wellness aspect of wine, which is what I missed during those forced periods of alcoholic abstinence. In good moderation opening up a bottle of wine and sharing it with good friends and loved family will give you an overwhelming sense of belonging, something that has been proven to a long and healthy life. Moderation and sharing are the KEY words here. So, continue to forge yourself into the best possible version that you can. As for me, I will be doing so in the company of those I love, sharing a bottle and the experience of a fun wine.

Finding Relief

HOW ONE WOMAN’S CHRONIC PAIN LED TO HER OWN WELLNESS REVOLUTION

What’s the one part of your body that, when it aches, can completely shut you down? For millions of Americans, the answer is all too familiar. According to a 2021 survey, 20.9% of Americans—approximately 51.6 million people—suffer from chronic pain. This widespread issue has led many to explore alternative forms of healing when traditional pain management methods fall short.

Pam Keen, owner of Regeneration Station, knows this struggle firsthand. After multiple shoulder surgeries and the common ailments that come with aging, Pam found herself battling chronic pain and fatigue. Traditional remedies no longer offered relief, and the relentless grind of her real estate career left her yearning for a solution. In 2023, she made a bold decision: to embark on her healing journey and create a space where others could access cutting-edge wellness therapies.

Her exploration led her to a revolutionary technology called the Energy Enhancement System (EESystem). Developed over 20 years by Dr. Sandra Rose Michael, Ph.D., DNM, DCSJl, the EESystem uses advanced computer technology to generate bio-active energy fields, including “scalar waves.”

Scalar Energy Room

This innovative system is the cornerstone of Regeneration Station. Pam has dedicated an entire room to this technology, offering hourly and even overnight sessions. The EESystem has been recognized at numerous medical and scientific conferences for its potential to support wellness, relaxation, and rejuvenation.

The EESystem and Scalar Energy Room is not the only tool in Regeneration Station’s wellness arsenal. Visitors can also take advantage of a cold plunge bath, infrared sauna, and lymphatic drainage equipment. These therapies target inflammation, improve metabolism, and support both mental and physical health, offering a holistic approach to healing. Massage therapy is another tried and true treatment one can access at this wellness center. All of these holistic approaches can be used with regularity. Many of their effects are almost immediate.

Pam’s vision for Regeneration Station is clear: to combine mind, body, spirit, and science in ways that elevate health and consciousness. For those seeking an alternative to conventional pain management, her story is a powerful reminder that healing is not one-size-fits-all. With the right tools and a willingness to explore new possibilities, relief and rejuvenation can be within reach.

At Regeneration Station, Pam Keen is proving that wellness isn’t just a goal—it’s a journey worth taking.

A New Tomorrow

Finding ways to improve oneself, and sticking with it throughout the year ahead

At the beginning of every year, we find ourselves drawn to the idea of resolutions—a fresh start, a chance to become a bit closer to the person we want to be. Like most, we usually focus on goals like getting healthier, picking up new skills, or just being more intentional with our time. We often learn that while our motivation feels unstoppable in January, staying on track can be tough as the months go on. Setting small, achievable goals and celebrating little wins helps a lot. Breaking it down into steps can keep us focused, even when the excitement wears off. Resolutions can make a difference, but it’s all about sticking with it and being patient with ourselves along the way. What are your resolutions?
