Behind every man… W
hether raising startup capital, brokering multi-million dollar real estate deals, or investing in the education of underprivileged youth, the women of Denver’s entrepreneur community certainly have a fire and determination that is second to none. In this issue, we have the joy of spotlighting a group of these impactful ladies. My only regret is that we don’t have an unlimited page count to feature every one of the deserving women that live amongst us. One of these is my wife and business partner, Kate. She is far too humble to ever talk about herself, so I am now taking the opportunity to brag about her amazing accomplishments. At age 20, Kate Schowengerdt finished cosmetology school in Scottsdale, and wanted to learn modern hairstyle from one of the best in the country. On her own dime, she packed up her 1996 Isuzu Amigo (now extinct) and set out for Los Angeles. Within 12 months, she ascended from unpaid intern at Neil George Salon in Beverly Hills to a personal stylist for one of Hollywood’s most sought after actresses. Missing her family in the Midwest, mixed with a little divine intervention because she had a boy to meet there, Kate moved back to Kansas City. Starting from scratch yet again, she introduced herself to many local retail business professionals and acquired an impressive client list. It was about that time she met a guy who was coming off a three-year ski tour in Vail. After our first date, I called my mother and said, “I just found my future wife.” Six months later there was a sign over an old brick building off the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City: “Kate Manz Salon.” After becoming one of the most in-demand hair colorists in the city, Kate (by then age 25) opened a blow dry bar directly above the salon. In 2013, Kate was able to successfully broker the sale of both salons so we could move our young family to Colorado and expand her brother’s publishing business. At this point, her true awesomeness was on display, as we had a 3-year-old son, a 2-year-old daughter, and a third child on the way. Through all of her success, Kate has carried herself with humility, gratitude and always puts her family first. For that, I am most impressed. No matter the title at the front of the name, there is something unique about the calm confidence of a successful woman.

LISA DOANE
I am the mother of a very energetic 30-month-old son… and wife to an equally energetic 422-month-old husband. Fun fact: From 2005-2007, I was the morning talk show host on “Wake the Hell Up” for the world’s first internet television network, ManiaTV! But one of my proudest career moments was when I was the PR manager at Elitch Gardens and I named the water slide, Tube Top. I can’t wait to take my son on it and say, “That’s right, son. Your mom named this ride.” Oh, and in case you were wondering, I can’t get a blueberry out of a toddler’s nose using tweezers. Don’t judge.
Lisa has had a passion for photography since childhood and has always enjoyed capturing candid moments and natural scenes. Raised in Indiana, she fell in love with Colorado and relocated here in 1999. With an outgoing personality, her eye has been drawn toward this fun and exciting community. She enjoys working with local artists, business owners and event planners, as well as individuals. She has lived in the Boulder area for over 11 years and when not behind the lens, enjoys snowboarding, biking, hiking, camping, CrossFit, and spending time with her family and friends.

ALLYSON REEDY
DANA LAPINEL
Allyson Reedy is first and foremost an eater. While her affinity for food was detrimental to her dreams of modeling swimwear, it helps her tremendously when writing about local restaurants. She's competed in eating contests around town, never met a Thai curry she didn't like and has been written love poems by waiters in awe of her impressive appetite. On the off chance she's not eating, you'll find Allyson wrangling her two toddlers and three dogs.
The best part about writing is meeting and connecting with unique individuals. With so many artists, food lovers, outdoor enthusiasts and entrepreneurs in Colorado, there is always something interesting to write about. When I’m not busy typing away, I love to go on outdoor adventures with my lab and pug. The sunshine in Denver makes it hard to stay inside, and there are so many places to go, things to do and sights to see.
JULES MARIE
COLLEEN KELLY
I’m a word chef. I’ve been writing stories since I was a kid and Mom quizzed me with words from the National Spelling Bee. I enjoy writing about unique topics—little free libraries, tiny houses, micro-brewed chai—and am always on the alert for unique story ideas. It’s an honor for me to interview someone and distill their words into an inspiring and memorable article. I love living in the historically quaint town of Louisville, and am so grateful for the extraordinary art, music and outdoor choices available.
I love adventuring (yes, it's totally a verb), Corgis and a hot cup of tea. I moved to Colorado to continue my hunt for the ever-elusive Sasquatch and drink craft beer. In my spare time, I read, photograph my dogs and generally love life.

RATIO BEERWORKS There’s no shortage of breweries in Denver, and the city’s RiNo district just got another addition to the scene in the form of Ratio Beerworks. Ratio will produce five flagship beers as well as seasonally changing artisanal brews. On their website, Ratio describes their brewery as follows: “With a state-of-the-art, 20-barrel system, we will have more than enough beer to go around. And the tap room will be as eclectic as the community that it’s built to support. The scene at Ratio is all about beer, but our art and music programs will ensure all of the senses are stimulated.” Cheers to that.

his year’s “black-collar” event, Mutts & Models: The Fundraiser for Underprivileged Pets, will be a night that F. Scott Fitzgerald could only dream of. Appropriately themed, “The Great Barksby,” this year’s event is set in the roaring 20s. Break out the cocktail dresses and tuxedos for a night of gourmet food and drink, silent and live auctions, and of course, the renowned celebrity and canine fashion show that features local celebrities working the runway with their dogs. Mutts & Models will be held on May 16 in the beautiful Seawell Grand Ballroom, part of the Denver Center for Performing Arts. Funds collected through this annual event will benefit the not-for-profit organization, PetAid Colorado. PetAid Colorado’s mission is to provide a healthcare safety net for Colorado’s underprivileged pets and at-risk animals through several programs: • PetAid Animal Hospital - provides comprehensive healthcare by offering high-quality, generously discounted veterinary care. • PetAid Care Grants –provide one-time medical assistance to help a disadvantaged pet’s owners save the life of a beloved pet.

• PetAid Disaster Services – assists at-risk animals during disasters throughout Colorado. • PetAid Home Outreach – takes veterinary care to pet owners when they can’t come to the PetAid facility. In 2014, a total of 7,663 sick and injured pets were given veterinary care that they might otherwise not have access to, thanks to PetAid Colorado’s dedicated work. “As a long-time volunteer, I see PetAid staff as living their work,” says Mary Anne Mills, co- chair of the 2015 Mutts & Models event. “Knowing the tremendous value of pet companionship in my life, I want PetAid to be able to continue providing services that help preserve the human-animal bond for every animal, regardless of their owner’s circumstances and ability to afford essential veterinary services.” Mills has been supporting PetAid for years, along with her canine co-chair, Teddy, a six-year-old therapy dog. By attending Mutts & Models, you, too, can support the wonderful work of PetAid Colorado. For tickets and information head to MuttsAndModels.org.

After 63 years in the family, the Taylor Estate is available for purchase at $27.7
million, which is the highest price tag in the Denver metro area. The Taylor Estate is co-listed between Fred and Nancy Wolfe, of LIV Sotheby’s International Realty and Tye Stockton of Ascent Sotheby’s International Realty in Vail. To uncover the estate’s storied past, The Wolfe Group’s Ian Wolfe enlisted the help of Historic Denver, one of the nation’s premier non-profit historic preservation organizations, to investigate details of the home. “We never could have learned all we did about the estate without them,”
says Ian, a board member of Historic Denver himself. Nancy envisions the potential for the next owners. “The buyer might be a family who wants tranquility and unparalleled mountain and waterfront views, yet is only 20 minutes to a vibrant city,” she says. “Or, because of the secluded fully fenced location with a security gated entrance, it could be someone who enjoys their privacy.” At a client-only reception hosted at the Taylor Estate by LIV Sotheby brokers
Nancy and Fred Wolfe, Vernon Taylor, III, the son of Vernon and Ann Taylor, made an appearance. For further details on this once-in-a-lifetime real estate opportunity, contact The Wolfe Group at 303.324.0825.

I just always had a desire to work with a love of houses, architecture and working with people.” The Wolfe Group has been fortunate to sell some of Denver’s most beautiful homes. They’re geniuses when it comes to marketing historic properties ranging in value from small homes located in Park Hill or, for instance, gorgeous mansions like the historic, 30,000-square-foot Phipps Mansion.

Rosella Louis
Tammy Pratt
Kelly Cost
Founder/Owner The Brass Bed Fine Linens & Furnishings At 21 years old, Rosella Louis first opened The Brass Bed in 1978. Fast-forward nearly 38 years and you get a powerhouse store that sells products you can’t find anywhere else. The store sells fine linens and furnishings for the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and more. Rosella remains humble and keeps her successful spirit alive, and it shows the second you step into her store. She offers great advice to other women entrepreneurs: “If you work hard and hold on to your morals and ethics—and treat your customers with honesty and integrity—good things will happen. Know that growth is not a straight line and the economy has its ups and downs. Take risks in a calculated way and don’t gamble what you’re not willing to lose.”
Owner/Principal Designer Pratt Designs It’ll just take one second to fall in love with Tammy Pratt and her brilliant interior design work. In 2008, Tammy started Pratt designs, which is now one of the most prestigious and sought-after interior design firms in the Denver area. Pratt Designs online portfolio will make you daydream about redoing just about every room in your house.
Most kids have dreams of becoming doctors or superheroes when they grow up. Not Kelli Cost, owner/president of Classic Homeworks. She knew from early on that her destiny involved hard hats, tool belts and home remodeling. Yes, Kelli knew she wanted to be an architect. Now Kelli is the proud owner of Classic Homeworks—the folks you turn to for kitchen, basement, bathroom, additions and other home remodeling projects. Kelli and her team know that with the growing number of HGTV viewers, many homeowners expect to have a full remodel finished in under three days and less than $10,000. “At Classic Homeworks, we strive to deliver realistic expectations on what can be done. We always want to deliver quality in our product and integrity in our service,” says Kelli. Along with getting that dream bathroom you’ve always wanted, Kelli’s kindness for her clients and the community is evident. One of her favorite quotes is: “Treat others the way that you want to be treated.” And she puts it best herself: “I believe that quote translates to business in every way. I want to deliver a great product and service to our customers and charge a fair price. I want to work with a great team of people that works hard and has fun while doing it. I want to work with honesty and integrity. Creating a stunning kitchen or new space along the way is just icing on the cake!”

Full Speed Ahead Helping Fuel Women-Led Businesses to Success ARTICLE EMILY O’BRIEN

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | April 2015
B
oulder’s latest startup accelerator, MergeLane, aspires to propel the growth of women-led businesses with a 12-week program designed to provide eight women-led startups with abundant resources. This entails advice from business mentors and executives, a program tailor made to early-stage business issues and topics explicitly affecting women leaders. It also offers connections to key individuals in the companies’ respective industries to allow for guidance and mentorship. As part of the program, which launched in February of this year, the participating eight companies will receive investments between $20,000 and $120,000. Each participating company has at least one female founder, market traction and a unique position in a significant sector. “It’s helping shift the way women run businesses,” says Program Director Hannah Davis. MergeLane companies were designated through an open application process that began back in October. The founders join MergeLane in Boulder for the first two weeks, one week midway through and the last week of the 12-week program, but do not need to be local residents to participate. Sue Helibronner and Elizabeth Kraus are the female founders behind MergeLane; they launched this program to bring more women to the male-dominated startup community. Both hold impressive credentials. Sue began her career as an attorney – last as a federal prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice and then spent many years as a CEO and president leading and selling multiple start-ups. Elizabeth is an entrepreneur and seasoned angel investor as well as founder of the Impact Angel Group, a group of investors equally dedicated to making a difference and realizing a return. Local CEOs seeking advice can get feedback from other CEOs during MergeLane’s complimentary, public office hours. All sessions will take place in downtown Boulder. More adventurous spirits can go along on hikes for entrepreneurs and investors in the foothills. Kraus leads the 90-minute walks monthly. The theory behind MergeLane is to invest in women who will create high-performing gender-diverse companies; the notion is formed on data that Venture-backed women-led companies achieve 12 percent higher revenue and the returns are 34 percent higher. MergeLane is out to change the statistic that only 7 percent of venture-capital-backed startups are run by women. “We provide mentorship and help their companies to scale and grow…and grow,” adds Davis. Still in its infancy, MergeLane has made a tremendous splash. Its tagline is broadening the on-ramp for women-led companies. They are making a better way to open doors—or roads—and narrow the gap for the strong female entrepreneurs everywhere.

A Galleria of Treasures SHOPS AT 9TH AVENUE ARTICLE JULES MARIE
V
isionary Susan Hildebrand created Shops at 9th Avenue as an awe-inspiring selection of treasures from 20 unique galleries all under one roof. The Shops at 9th Avenue is conveniently located at 9th and Broadway and has become a go-to destination for shoppers desiring a modern sophistication, Old World chic, vintage and antique treasures. “It’s all about the mix, not the match, so we carry a wide assortment of items. We find the harmony between the old and contemporary objects. My feeling is that most rooms need an antique-that’s the soul of the room as you need a piece with history and interest,” says Hildebrand who created this 15,000-square-foot visual symphony in July 1999 as a unique resource for design ideas, fine furnishings, lighting, framing, original artwork and decorative arts. Gallery owners selectively curate merchandise and boast an ever-changing array of extraordinary inventory. Stroll through the Artisan Rug Gallery offering high-end and custom-made rugs, including hand-knotted 100 percent wool and silk rugs. Visit Djuna’s 2,000-square-foot retail shops and full-service design studio. Djuna recently completed the prestigious Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort and Spa. Within Djuna, saunter over to CeCe Caldwell’s Paints with their unique offering of eco-friendly chalk and clay paints. Look for Old Glory Antiques--a sophisticated collection of old and new items designed to lend a sense of history, warmth and soul to the home. Keep strolling and visit Post 31 Interiors and Designwright Studio-- fabulous collections of transitional furnishings and accessories in neutral tomes offering the latest in sophisticated design trends as well as interior design services. “I had never embarked on anything this large before and I didn’t realize how big it was going to be. I’ve always loved design and wanted to create a beautiful atmosphere that I would enjoy coming to every day. I have travelled extensively and noticed this gallery concept in other parts of the world. 38

People have different tastes so the Shops at 9th Avenue offers something for everyone. I feel very fortunate to be around all of this beauty every day,” says Hildebrand who is a strong proponent of community involvement and has supported many non-profit organizations over the years. Hildebrand’s approach to entrepreneurism is notable. “You just don’t give up. Be persistent. Put one foot in front of the other every single day to reach your goals. That seems to be the answer in life for a lot of issues, plus I love the challenge,” encourages Hildebrand. Visit the Shops at 9th Avenue at 899 N. Broadway in Denver or look for them at Shopsat9thAvenue.com

Moving On Up CHERRY CREEK SAYS KONNICHIWA TO KOBE AN ARTICLE ALLYSON REEDY | PHOTOGRAPHY COLLEEN KELLY
W
hen Kimie Loeffler opened her first Japanese restaurant 35 years ago, she wasn’t trying to start a restaurant legacy, she just wanted a nice restaurant to eat at. Back then, sushi and Japanese restaurants weren’t nearly as pervasive in Denver as they are now, so she started her own, specializing in food from her native Kobe, Japan. Surviving a single decade in the restaurant business is an achievement, let alone three and a half. Loeffler’s recipes are clearly a success, but with the tearing down of their former shopping center location in Lakewood, Kobe An needed a new home. It found one in Cherry Creek. Kobe An moved to the neighborhood in early 2015. The space, just off 2nd and Milwaukee, is large and warm, decorated with simple wood paneling, Japanese prints and stained glass. Near the entrance is the long sushi bar, and the spacious dining room–complete with cozy, sunken tatami rooms–is tucked into the back. The menu is a collection of Loeffler’s recipes, and as you can imagine, after 35 years it’s a pretty good-sized collection. Starters range from the refreshing seaweed salad ($6.50) to Loeffler’s secret family recipe– gyoza with a spicy mustard dipping sauce ($6) – to bitesized calamari tempura glazed with sweet and sour sauce ($10.75). You can go several different directions for entrees; there’s a variety of seafood, noodle, bento and shabu-shabu options. Try the teriyaki or 42

miso glazed salmon ($22), plump yaki-udon noodles loaded with veggies ($14.95) or, if you’re really hungry, the shabu-shabu ( Japanese version of fondue) with rib eye beef, noodles and vegetables ($26; $58 for American Kobe beef ). And then of course, there is sushi. The Diablo roll ($15) is a just-spicyenough blend of tempura shrimp, spicy tuna, avocado and seared escolar. Traditional rolls, like the salmon-filled Alaska ($7.75) and eel and cucumber Caterpillar ($11.95), are packed with fresh fish and flavor. Being an authentic Japanese restaurant, there’s also an expansive sake menu. If you get there during happy hour (4:30-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and nightly from 9 p.m.), premium hot sake is just $5. It may have been novel for a woman to open her own sushi restaurant in the late 1970s, but today the only singular thing about Kobe An is the dedication to fresh, genuine Japanese cuisine. You’ll still find Loeffler working the room, helping guests navigate the menu and urging you to save room for dessert. Her favorite? Chocolate lava cake. KOBE AN
