FIRST
Back in high school, I was on the yearbook staff. That might seem like a strange way to start this considering I’m now 25 and like to claim that I didn’t peak at 16, but… Nonetheless.
Being in yearbook meant I was everywhere—at every event, in every corner of the school, finding out about every organization I wasn’t directly involved in. I got to experience so much of the action that many people at our school missed. That’s exactly how I feel now, getting to be involved in things and meeting people I might never have crossed paths with otherwise.
After all, what I love most about living here is the people. Is that cheesy? Yes. Is that true? Also yes! Because our area is full of fascinating individuals whose stories deserve to be told, which we hope is what you take out of reading Cedar Park City Lifestyle each month. It’s like one big, never-ending adventure where I’m constantly learning and getting behind-the-scenes looks at what makes this place tick. Trust me—it never gets old.
There’s something truly special about Cedar Park and Leander. And not to bring it back to high school (I swear I didn’t peak!), but there’s a reason why so many people I grew up with decided to come back here after college to start building careers. Our community is full of opportunity. Witnessing them succeed in becoming the newest wave of educators and medical professionals makes me so proud.
The Love Local Issue is always a fun one to work on considering there’s so much to love about, well, local! With how much pride Greater Austinites have, “support local” isn’t just a saying, it’s a way of life. We want our neighbors to thrive, to see their dreams through.
From the boutiques to the restaurants and the fitness centers to the home services companies... It’s inspiring to see how much care and passion our community’s entrepreneurs pour into their work, whether it’s something they’ve passed down through the family for decades or are just now in the process of launching.
I’m beyond grateful to call Cedar Park home. And I hope you are, too.
Enjoy our latest issue, and have a very happy February ahead!

Raise a glass of Austin 101 Light Whiskey while revving engines at Cars and Custard
Austin 101 Light Whiskey is a true reflection of the city it’s named after—full of character. Drawing inspiration from Austin’s eclectic music scene, booming tech culture, and its motto of “Keep Austin Weird,” the creators sought to craft a whiskey that is just as ambitious and inviting.
Focused on using grains straight from the panhandle, Austin 101 gives a nod to traditional methods but with a Texas twist. They even finish the distillation process in recycled oak whiskey barrels, promoting the importance of sustainability. The result? An approachable, smooth whiskey that quickly gained praise at its first farmto-market foodie fair.
“We like to think Austin 101 Light Whiskey was born from the marriage of Austin’s vibrant, rule-breaking culture and a desire to elevate the humble grain to whiskey stardom, all while keeping an eye on the environment,” says Jeff Harlan, founder of All Angles / ATX Rally Car Club.
Austin 101 is available at several liquor store retailers to make it easy for fans to enjoy wherever they go, as well as behind the bar at Spare Birdie Public House, where it’s become a staple. The local car community has embraced Austin 101 as their go-to brand, particularly at luxury car meets held at Spare Birdie, put on by Cars and Custard.
Drawing folks from across the area, Cars and Custard is an event that began in late 2019 when then-high school senior, Logan Rodriguez, approached Harlan. He mentioned an interest in hosting a car meet for youth, suggesting Andy’s Frozen Custard as a centralized location.
“When he went off to college, we agreed that I would keep it going. We’ve hosted almost 100 meets now and have a loyal family of all ages,” says Harlan. “Our family-friendly atmosphere is what attracts a consistent crowd of car enthusiasts that come to see and learn more about our growing car culture in Cedar Park.”

Transform your event’s vision in a beautiful way with Bloom and Leaf’s floral designs and wedding management services
Flowers are more than a gift—they’re a reflection of life’s most meaningful moments. Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or “just because” gesture, Bloom and Leaf is the destination for all your floral needs.
Founder and Chief Floral Artist Celia Malkemus ensures every arrangement is as special as the occasion. But when it comes to weddings, her expertise truly shines. With a consultation rooted in her two favorite words—style and feel—she works closely with couples to elevate their florals.
“My favorite thing is the thematic weddings because we get to sit down, watch the movie, and really embrace that theme while creating,” says Malkemus. “We got to do a Hobbiton wedding last year, so we utilized woodsy things you would see in The Hobbit. The bridesmaids carried lanterns filled with fairy lights instead of regular bouquets, and we wrapped them with ivy. We even did a full greenery flower crown for the bride.”
Other themed events Malkemus has especially loved were a Final Fantasy XIV wedding using a moogle as a bouquet, and an Alice in Wonderland quinceañera complete with teapot centerpieces.
She also offers wedding management services, stepping in six to eight weeks prior to the big day to handle vendor coordination and timelines. Her goal is to eliminate the bride and groom’s stress, even if that means picking up a call during a hockey game to discuss issues with tables or tackling a last-minute switch in venues.
“No matter if it’s just florals or wedding management, whenever there is a problem, we figure out a way to solve it,” says Malkemus. “It’s very rewarding to be there and move through the hiccups.”
Bloom and Leaf remains a cut above because of Malkemus’s commitment to excellence. Every month, she takes a class called My Design Coach with Jackie Lacey, winner of the prestigious Sylvia Cup—aka the top national award for floral designers.
“I keep learning. There’s never a time when I think, ‘I’ve arrived,’” says Malkemus. “I’ve got quite a wide array of experts in my corner to help me become a better expert.”

Personalize your branding with Chris Tyre, art director and visual storyteller behind Via Visual and Nomad + Camera
ARTICLE BY MEGAN MARSHALL PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF VIA VISUAL
Practicality met passion when Chris Tyre chose graphic design as his major. Having become a marketing coordinator and graphic designer after college, he was drawn to the power of design as a form of communication in the wild.
“I was driving to work on a winter day when a large bag hit my windshield. It was an empty bag of ice melt, which I had designed at my company,” says Tyre. “It hit me in more than one way that, via graphic design, my work could be anywhere and everywhere. Knowing that encouraged me to take ownership of my work.”
Today, Tyre channels that through his businesses: Via Visual for design and branding, and Nomad + Camera for photography.
Like his three-year-old son, Tyre thrives on asking “why.” Whether working within frameworks or building them, that “why” is critical to uncovering a project’s direction.
Color and texture heavily shape his process. For corporate and cultural experiences alike, Tyre’s brand work focuses on the feelings associated with specific shades and how materials—like mirrored acrylic, wood, metal, and paper coatings—spark human moments.
“The winning formula is when I get to partner with a lot of creative folks of different disciplines to see out a singular vision,” says Tyre. “It’s that kinetic energy and fusion of ideas that I can’t get enough of.”
Rebranding might feel strange at first, but soon you’re eager to show it off. And that momentum, he finds, is contagious.
“The brand’s integrity and the emotions it evokes with its audience are all of the elements working collectively, from the product itself to customer service to copywriting to imagery and beyond,” says Tyre. “What’s rewarding to see is the gained confidence in a brand’s new look, knowing the organization’s next chapter is a bright one.”
“Large events usually have a big wow factor that draws people in, but when you can see that the small details are just as intentional, it really leaves a strong impression with attendees.”
These formative years are crucial for cognitive and social development, fostering growth, curiosity, and a love for learning.

Class Manager Sarah Hyde: “I’ve been Jazzercising for 31 years! I have gained a healthy outlook towards fitness—a basic love of fitness. Jazzercise not only makes fitness enjoyable, but the instructors bring knowledge to the stage, so students gain that knowledge.”
Instructor Heather Pelletier: “I was an athlete throughout school, but I found it hard to stick to a fitness regimen after college. Working out was too boring. But Jazzercise brings the joy with music, dance, and friendship.”
Class Manager Cassaundra Theriot: “I have gained more muscle, more stamina, and most importantly, friendships that are like family.”
Member Cynthia Mejia Guevara: “It’s given me physical and mental strength, great friendships, accountability, and has resulted in a better me. Thank you to the instructors and Jazzercise!”
Member Rhonda Cox: “I’ve gained balance, which is very important as you age. Everyone is accepted at Jazzercise, whether you are old or young, fit or working on it. You can work at your own pace.”
Member Robin Schiller: “The friendships I’ve established over the last 10 years have been invaluable. Another thing I’ve gained from continuing with regular weekly workouts is that I have truly stayed in healthy condition by being taught the proper form and how to exercise safely at age 60.”
Member Cara Copeland: “One of my favorite memories is the year a cold front hit and the heater went out. Chrissy and Rob showed up with space heaters, and we danced bundled up until the room warmed—proof of incredible commitment and dedication. Despite the chill, there was warmth and fun.”
Member Alice Jackson: “My favorite memories are the special dance days where we all dress festive and dance to holiday music.”
Member Linda Reeves Wielchowsky: “My favorite memory is the day I returned to Jazzercise after COVID for the first time. As I got out of my car with my water bottle, Gwen Mitchell came running out and gave me a huge hug. I felt wonderful!”
Member Luanne Keenan Miller: “It’s a very welcoming place. My favorite memory is when we met for lunch and I got to know some gals from other classes.”
Member Cheryl Mire: “My favorite memory is after moving to Austin during the pandemic, walking in to join and finding that Stacey Sutton was teaching at this location. We met as class managers over 25 years ago in Houston.”
Member Cristina Vasquez-Flores: “I love the camaraderie with all of the Jazzercise community. It doesn’t matter what class you go to, everyone is always happy to help and always happy to see you.”
Class Manager Carol Rogus: “When you are at Jazzercise, you don’t realize you’re working out—you’re just having fun.”
Class Manager Mona Corbett: “I really love the different dance formats, with aerobic, strength, and stretching options incorporated into each class.”
Member Sharon Reeves: “My favorite aspect is the friendships I’ve made and how we all support each other in reaching our goals. Also, the fun and laughs we have in class. We have the most awesome tribe of members.”
Member Katie McClarty: “I love the variety of routines and instructors, and the ability to tailor to any age or ability level. It’s the best hour of the day, and no one dances alone!”

MAGIC ENTERTAINMENT
For Samantha Pettey, stepping into the world of character performing was a magical twist she never expected. When a friend posted about being hired to play Rapunzel at a small local business, she was intrigued. Soon after, Pettey joined in the fun as Elsa, where she quickly discovered how much joy and wonder these interactions bring.
After the original business closed, Pettey turned a setback into an opportunity, launching her own concept in 2022. Through Just Add Magic Entertainment, she has been on a mission to create memorable experiences and establish Austin’s premier character company.
“OUR SERVICES ARE COMPLETELY CUSTOMIZABLE, SO WE’LL WORK WITH YOU PERSONALLY AND HELP RECOMMEND OPTIONS TO MAKE YOUR EVENT FEEL LIKE A FAIRY TALE.”
“We recognize how much these characters mean to people, and so it is vitally important to us that our characters feel real, even to adults,” says Pettey. “Our costumes are top of the line and make the characters look like they walked right out of their stories.”
Every character knows their story inside and out, sticking to details as small as Belle always greeting with “bonjour” instead of “hello.”
“One story that highlights our impact is when I met a wonderful grandmother as Cinderella. A family had waited in line again to see me, as the grandmother wanted a picture of just me and her. I asked her what her favorite moment of my— Cinderella’s—story was, and she responded, ‘Falling in love,’” says Pettey. “I then asked if the man accompanying her was her prince charming, to which she giggled and said yes. At the end, she asked if she could give me a hug, and I believe I saw her wipe away a tear.”
Just Add Magic Entertainment has been part of countless events, including Christmas tree lighting ceremonies, Trail of Lights, Unicorn World, and country club character brunches. The performers even donate their time to Austin Angels’s summer charity event, giving kids the chance to meet their never-before-seen idols.
Whether it be intimate birthday celebrations or corporate gatherings, Just Add Magic Entertainment offers many oneof-a-kind activities. For birthdays, children can enjoy snowball fights with Elsa or swimming with Ariel in mermaid form. Corporate events are also versatile with story times, singing performances, and movie nights.
“Our goal is to provide an unforgettable, Disney-like experience at your event,” says Pettey. “We make every step magical, from the moment you submit your booking form to the last hug goodbye from the character.”

Experience the long history and rich culture of cowboy boots
Today, cowboy boots are a Texas fashion staple. Despite their name, they aren’t just the practical footwear of cowboys as they once were known to be. You’ve likely seen your neighbors donning them at concerts, festivals, and most certainly football games—and perhaps you’ve done the same!
To lean into the spirit of the American West, cowboy boots are the way to go. No matter whether you are in jeans, a suit, or a dress, they are sure to make a statement, especially when you opt for premium materials and quality craftsmanship.
• The pattern was created during post-Civil War trail drives.
• Justin Boots by H.J. Justin became the first supplier.
• Popularity grew because of the rise of Westerns.
• It was adopted as the Texas state footwear in 2007.

START YOUR DAY WITH BREAKFAST DISHES AND DRINKS FROM THREE SPOTS WORTH WAKING UP FOR
Trudy’s in Austin has made a comeback in a big, brunch-y way with some classic favorites, due to popular demand. Since 1988, this colorful spot has maintained its star in the Texas crown of staple “must-tries” for tourists as a true Tex-Mex hot spot. But in recent years, they had consolidated their restaurants into one flagship location and decided to prioritize their lunch and dinner menu.
“Unicorns” (aka ATX patrons) far and wide made their feelings known that the beloved brunch was truly missed and needed a revolution to bring it back!
The brunch buffet spread includes bestselling dishes like migas, chilaquiles, tostadas, loaded nachos, and quesadillas. Further added are other popular made-to-order specialty dishes, such as tres leches French toast, piled high with generous hash browns, eggs, bacon, beans, and of course, Texas queso. Their new creative and unique beverage crowdpleasers—IV bag frozen mimosas, in particular—have also been a fast hit to go with those legacy Trudy’s meals.
Come out to enjoy local artists’ prints on the walls, a tropical patio ambiance, and an impressive specialty tequila tasting bar upstairs.
