CELINA’S ROBERT RANC

Although born and raised in northeast Ohio, Robert Ranc and his family now call Celina their home having moved here about a year ago to tackle the role of City Manager. It’s an enormous challenge helping shape the future of the fastest growing city in the United States. Having a seasoned professional such as Robert at the helm is an important asset in navigating the challenge of balancing growth with our collective desire to maintain our identity as a community. We sat down with Robert to learn more about his first year serving in his role and how he and his family are settling in.

TELL US ABOUT THE ROAD YOU TOOK TO ARRIVE IN CELINA?

Following high school, I served a six-year enlistment in the Air Force as a Persian-Farsi linguist.  During my time in the Air Force, I was stationed in Monterey, California, San Angelo, Texas, and Augusta, Georgia.  My wife, Rachelle, and I met while I was stationed in Monterey.  We were married in San Diego, California in December 2004.  Following my enlistment, I completed both my undergraduate and graduate degrees at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.  I began my career in local government as a community and economic

development project manager for Ogden City, Utah.  I have subsequently worked in executive capacities for Lehi, Utah, Burleson, Texas, and Dublin, Ohio.  Rachelle and I have three kids – Addie (18), Carter (16), and Everett (9).  Addie is a freshman at Utah State University, Carter is a junior at Walnut Grove High School, and Everett is in 4th grade at Sam Johnson Elementary School.  We have moved into Mustang Lakes, and we love the community.  Like many people, we were attracted to the small town feel of Celina as well as the excitement of being part of a fast-growing city.

HOW ARE YOU SETTLING INTO LIFE CONNECTED IN CELINA?

This has been a big year for our family.  In addition to moving from Ohio back to Texas to start a new job, our daughter Addie graduated from high school and moved away for college.  Moving to a close-knit community like Celina has helped a lot.  We have enjoyed getting to know members of the community,

our neighbors, and our church community.  We have enjoyed the community events that bring Celina together – from Friday Night Markets to special events, and getting to know people as we enjoy the restaurants and shops downtown.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT STARTING A NEW YEAR?

It is nice to have the first year as city manager under my belt and look forward to continuing the City’s positive momentum heading into the new year.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF ACCOMPLISHING LAST YEAR?

As I have taken stock of the past year, I am impressed with all the City has accomplished in such a short amount of time.  We opened Fire Station #3 and the new Police Headquarters.  We also broke ground on the Downtown Center.  Additionally, we hired four new department directors, including

CONTINUED >

a new fire chief.  We were also able to pass a budget for Fiscal Year 2025 which includes significant enhancements and additional resources for public safety and infrastructure improvements.  These accomplishments are a credit to the City Council, our city staff, our boards and commissions, and the support of the residents of Celina.

“LIKE MANY PEOPLE, WE WERE ATTRACTED TO THE SMALL TOWN FEEL OF CELINA AS WELL AS THE EXCITEMENT OF BEING PART OF A FAST-GROWING CITY.”

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR YOU?

Any time you begin a new role in a new community, there is a lot to get up to speed on in a short amount of time.  I am appreciative to the City Council, city staff, and leaders throughout the community for helping to reduce the learning curve and taking the time to help get me up to speed quickly.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THE COMING YEAR?

I look forward to several important projects, including the construction of the Downtown Center parking garage, continuing the design of Fire Station #4 and the parks and recreation administration building, and continuing progress on Ousley Park.  I also look forward to continuing our efforts to strive to be an organization of excellence focused on providing outstanding services to the community.

WHAT IS ONE WISH YOU HAVE FOR CELINA IN THE NEW YEAR?

I look forward to continuing to grow as a community, welcoming our new neighbors while maintaining a commitment to taking care of one another.

ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER AND HOW IT AFFECTS WOMEN

WOMEN AND ADD

Hyperactive women may go at full speed until they crash from the overload.

According to Sari Solden, in her book Women with Attention Deficit Disorder, “Almost all women find that life today is complex, upsetting or frustrating, but they are still able to meet most of [life’s] demands reasonably well…. For women with untreated Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), however, the demands of daily life can be crippling. It cripples their self-esteem, their families, their lives, their work and their relationships.”

ADD, also known as Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD), affects between three and five percent of the population. However, adult ADD, especially as it appears in women, often goes unrecognized.

CHARACTERISTICS OF ADD IN WOMEN

The symptoms of ADD are many. Some are more commonly seen in women and opposite the more recognized symptoms seen in men. This makes detection unlikely and diagnosis difficult. Each person’s experience with ADD is unique. While there is a multitude of characteristics, most women with the disorder don’t have every symptom. Instead, each woman has a mixture severe enough to impair some areas of life.

MENTAL VS. PHYSICAL DISORGANIZATION

Disorganization is typical and often a severe problem for women struggling with ADD. They may be unable to organize their homes, offices, or lives. To outsiders, the disorganization isn't always visible. That's because women who lead professional lives may have assistants, secretaries, and cleaning services to assist them. Some ADD women have a partner who compensates for their organizational dysfunction, as well.

Other women with ADD find clutter and disorganization an incredible distraction. These distractions, coupled with the responsibilities of everyday life, lead to mental disorganization. The disorganized brain struggles to store, weed out, and organize logically. For these women, being tidy and organized equals survival.

HYPERACTIVITY VS. HYPOACTIVITY

Women with ADD can be at either end of the spectrum, either hyperactive or hypoactive (underactive). Hyperactive women may go at full speed until they crash from the overload.

Family life can also suffer from a hyperactive mother. She may be unable to sit and play games or read to her children unless she finds the activities stimulating.

Many women with ADD are at the other extreme. They're hypoactive, unable to muster the energy to do much of anything. These women are often unable to keep up with life's many demands. Maintaining a home, participating in family activities, staying in touch with friends, even holding down a job can be a significant challenge.

INATTENTION VS. HYPERFOCUSING

The problem is women with ADD struggle with the inability to regulate attention. So it doesn't mean they can never maintain attention. Instead, their ability to focus is based on interest and whether the activity is stimulating. Many women daydreamed through school when they were younger. Yet the subjects or activities they found fun, interesting, or exciting didn't pose such a problem. Adult life with ADD is often the same.

Hyperfocusing, which is the opposite of inattention, also poses problems and can coexist with symptoms of inattention. While it may be challenging to focus on some things, a woman may hyperfocus on that which interests her and be unable to shift her attention. Hyperfocusing can last for hours, days, and longer and makes it difficult to break for important matters. Meals may be forgotten, and family members can carry on conversations without being heard. So hyperfocusing puts a strain on the family. If a hyperfocused woman does manage to break away from what she's engrossed in, she may wander aimlessly and forget what she's doing.

For some women, having ADD is like being on an emotional roller coaster.

IMPATIENCE AND IMPULSIVITY

Standing in lines, sitting in waiting rooms, and being placed on hold for lengthy waits drives some women with ADD to the brink. So they may avoid these situations altogether. Women with ADD may be impatient either visibly or internally or act impulsively. Minor nuisances can cause significant agitation. Other women with this disorder can maintain their composure yet still feel anxious and annoyed.

Women with ADD may also be impatient about life and events. A woman may plan her whole education or entire life in one day and need for it to happen immediately. She goes into things full swing rather than step-by-step. As a result, women with ADD may have a change of heart after much investment of time or money or feeling spread too thin, with too many goals to achieve.

Impulsiveness is seen when women with this disorder act or speak without thinking. This often leads to trouble by spending impulsively or jumping into relationships and even marriage. Some struggle socially and interrupt conversations or blurt things out they later regret.

MOOD

Mood swings, being overemotional, or easily frustrated is another problem. For some women, having ADD is like being on an emotional roller coaster. Extreme mood shifts sometimes lead to a misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder, though the two can coexist. Women with ADD are frustrated by the slightest aggravations. A simple mistake seems a major ordeal and may result in anger, storming off, and dropping a task altogether. If interrupted in the midst of something, a woman may become irritable and annoyed. Depression, although not a symptom of ADD, often coexists or is a result of the debilitating disorder. Depression in the ADD woman may stem from a lack of self-worth because she's unable to hold down a job

or adequately care for her family. It can also result from not achieving up to potential because of attention problems or the inability to stick with things. It also sometimes comes from feeling overwhelmed. This feeling can dominate the life of a woman with this disorder.

THE CAUSE OF ADD

Research indicates ADD is a neurobiological disorder with a strong genetic link. According to the nonprofit organization Children and Adults with Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD), complications during pregnancy, labor, and delivery, exposure to nicotine or alcohol during fetal development, or several other environmental factors may also play a role in the development of ADD.

MISDIAGNOSIS

Studies show the incidence of ADD in men and women is nearly identical, says Kathleen Nadeau, Ph.D., co-author of Understanding Women with AD/ HD. There are several common reasons women with ADD often go undiagnosed.

Doctors often diagnose the depression that accompanies ADD, but miss the ADD itself. Women, more often than men, have coexisting anxiety and depression, which must be treated as well.

Also, women who are more hyperactive, hyper talkative, and impulsive are sometimes misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Many doctors still look for signs of ADD more typical of boys. Many doctors fail to understand that ADD symptoms in females often don't appear until puberty or later because of hormonal fluctuations. When girls enter adolescence, during PMS, and as estrogen levels drop in perimenopause and menopause, the symptoms of ADD often worsen.

Also, girls tend to try harder in school, so their ADD patterns are often masked or overlooked by teachers.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Several treatments are available for ADD. The most effective is prescription medication. There's a multitude of stimulant and non-stimulant drugs available for treatment.

Behavioral therapy is also beneficial for both coming to terms with the lifelong disorder and to relieve negative coping behaviors. Coaching is also useful for learning new skills and strategies for structuring life. Because ADD is neurobiological, therapy and coaching work best in conjunction with medication.

Several ineffective treatments are on the market, as well. Suspect therapies, according to CHADD, include dietary plans such as the Feingold Diet and vitamin and mineral supplements. Other treatments that lack evidence include anti-motion-sickness medication, Candida yeast, EEG Biofeedback, Applied Kinesiology, also known as Neural Organization Technique, and Optometric Vision Training, to name a few. Often, excessive claims are made about these treatments, citing a few favorable responses or studies that don't hold up to scrutiny.

WHERE TO FIND HELP

An accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential. Finding a qualified provider isn't always easy because adult ADD, particularly as it affects women, isn't always recognized. Before seeking a diagnosis, read

some recommended books for a better understanding of the disorder and the diagnosis and treatment process. Also, compile a list of questions to ask your provider to ensure he has a clear understanding of the disorder and appropriate treatments. If you don't feel comfortable with a physician's responses, seek help elsewhere.

SYMPTOMS OF ADD

Some of the symptoms commonly seen in women, partially taken from Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults by Dr. Lynn Weiss, are as follows:

• Difficulty completing tasks or following through on plans

• Difficulty shifting attention

• Excessively shifting from one activity to another

• Trouble concentrating on reading

• Impatience

• Frequent preoccupation in thoughts and not hearing when spoken to

• Difficulty sitting still or excessive fidgeting • Sudden and unexpected mood swings

• Interrupting in conversations, speaking without considering consequences

• Hot-tempered • Need for high stimulus

• Forgetfulness

• Low tolerance for frustration

• A tendency toward substance abuse

A FRESH START

Healthy Options On The Menu At The Forge 1912

When the excesses of a month and a half of holiday celebrations settle around the waistline, it’s only natural to consider some healthier dining choices. Fortunately, one of our favorite local restaurants has our back as well as our expanding backside. The Forge 1912 not only offers world class steaks and burgers, but top-notch healthy options without requiring you to sacrifice quality or flavor.

Spinach Salad

If a variation on traditional themes is in order, try some vibrant spinach with farm fresh blueberries, blue cheese, candied pecans, croutons and house vinaigrette. Don’t forget the bacon bits! We’d highly recommend adding some steak or salmon to this delicious salad choice for an outstanding entree option.

If you are like us, we are always dreaming of the beach during the winter months. What better than a cooked crab cake with a beurre blanc sauce, chives and a refreshing lemon slice to conjure thoughts of spring and the shore… and to help us start our journey to beach bods!

Crab Cake

The recipe to successfully deliver on the promise of healthy alternatives that don’t feel like a punishment is fresh ingredients. The owners and staff at The Forge are committed to sourcing produce and protein that are second to none in freshness. This means working with local suppliers to ensure the least amount of time from harvest to table so they avoid the need for harmful preservatives or processes that leach out the nutrients and flavor.

Combined with thoughtful recipes that take advantage of naturally occurring flavors and contrasts, creative takes on traditional dishes, and the quality and care in preparation you’d receive from your grandmother’s kitchen, the team at The Forge have some dishes that are sure to get you back on track with your goals for 2025. And if you are also embracing “Dry January” or, like some of us, “Damp January,” the bar staff has you covered with creative mocktails to accompany your delicious entrees.

Caesar Salad

Following the motto of “less is more,” try on simplicity at its finest with crisp romaine lettuce, parmesan cheese, fresh croutons and homemade caesar dressing for a timeless treat as classic as Rome itself. Adding grilled chicken to this salad transforms it into a gem you’ll keep on your rotation year round.

Sweet Potato and 8oz Filet

What more can you say about meat and potatoes than “yes, please!” While the filet is considered a decadent cut of meat, it’s relatively low in fat compared to other cuts. Coupled with sweet potato, considered by experts to be a superfood due to its nutritional value, you can eat healthy without sacrificing your cravings

Landry says, “We had worked so hard for this and proved so many people wrong! When we beat Caddo Mills, I was overwhelmed by all the emotion and couldn’t wait to celebrate with the team! It was such a perfect way to end my senior season even though it ended with a loss.” The volleyball team finished third in state this past season! Landry’s talent and hard work have been acknowledged many times over as she’s been named Honorable Mention All District, Academic All District (sophomore year), Second Team All District, Academic All District (Junior year), First Team All District, Academic All

After graduation, she plans to attend Texas A&M to pursue her dreams of getting into medical school. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for her! Congratulations to Landry Graf and her selection as the January Outstanding Student Athlete of the Month!

A PLACE TO START

STARTING LINE COUNSELING & CONSULTING WITH CHASE WADE

When it comes to better health, “we run a race and eventually there is a finish to it,” says Chase Wade of Gunter, Texas. And when it comes to mental health and experiencing counseling, he continues, “We have to start somewhere, so let’s find a starting line, a place to start.”

Chase Wade, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), owns Starting Line Counseling in the Wellness Row Shopping Center in Gunter.  Starting Line Counseling offers various counseling services to help meet your needs. Like a General Practitioner treating concerns like the flu or common cold, Chase focuses on various matters such as family issues, trauma, and anxiety. “It’s the perfect fit for a small community because I can help in all areas,” he says. “I want you to be able to handle issues like how to negotiate life, how to mend relationships, how to solve problems while developing skills to handle certain situations.”

Chase has been in Gunter since 2023 but has over fifteen years of experience and quite a resume. After earning his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Texas Tech University, Chase moved to Fort Worth for seven years before moving to Houston for four years.

In a very short time, he grew the practice working for a renowned healthcare system to becoming a Vice President of Clinical Operations. He built the office staff from four to twenty and tripled his clients. It was a dream come true, thriving in an industry he loved, but he felt a calling to pursue his real passion.

Chase and his wife, Courteney, had just had their son, Fox, and realized they wanted a change. Courteney is originally from Gunter with family still here. As the country recovered from the recent pandemic, the Wades wanted a life that was quieter, and slower, so it only made sense to go north. Courteney works in informational technology thus was quickly able to find work in the area. Chase decided it was time to fulfill his desire to have a private practice.

It began entirely online. Chase was not worried as he predicted virtual therapy as a future trend back when he was in graduate school. His professors “didn’t quite believe me or see it as I did,” notes Chase, but “then a pandemic hits, and all of a sudden, virtual counseling soared in popularity,” he says. Perhaps one of the “benefits” of the pandemic is that “it normalized mental health,

“I WANT YOU TO BE ABLE TO HANDLE ISSUES LIKE HOW TO NEGOTIATE LIFE, HOW TO MEND RELATIONSHIPS, HOW TO SOLVE PROBLEMS
WHILE DEVELOPING SKILLS TO HANDLE CERTAIN SITUATIONS,”
CHASE CONTINUES.

virtual therapy, and diminished the stigma of seeking help,” Chase confirms.

As Chase’s practice grew, the Wellness Row Shopping Center opened, creating an opportunity for a physical office. He saw that the Gunter/Celina community was growing, and he believed a physical office would better serve people’s needs. Chase knew he could counsel a child, adolescents, people entering retirement wondering about “their purpose,” someone with addiction, or help parents with child-rearing needs to name a few. “I love my job and have a big aspiration for helping people,” says Chase. “Life can be hard and unfair at times. I am authentic with each client. I love coming to work every day with a drive to treat people’s problems,” he enthusiastically says.

He credits his grandfather, a World War II (WWII) veteran, as the person who gave him that very desire to help people. At university, he studied how war affected the children and families of WWII vets. It resonated with Chase and his own childhood, compelling him to attend graduate school and become a counselor. Growing up in Arlington, Chase was taught family values and how to respect people in your community. This experience instilled the importance of helping and taking care of people.

Living in Gunter reminds Chase of such memories. “The people here are so great,” he says. “It’s cool because a lot of the world is not slowing down, but Gunter feels like it is moving at its own pace. Everyone is kind to one another,” he states. For example, referring to client meetings, while Chase ensures patient privacy by scheduling plenty of space between sessions, it seems almost unnecessary. “Here, while it is a small town, people do not seem to care if people are going to counseling. There is absolutely no stigma. It is refreshing and says a lot about the community,” claims Chase.

Stigma is one of the hardest obstacles to overcome when needing help. Chase recognizes it’s difficult to ask for help, taking the first step to reach out. “The person on the other side of that call is truly not judgmental and wants to help by working with you,” he maintains.

As a former Division I athlete running track and cross country at Texas Tech, Chase comprehends commitment, setbacks, and how difficult life can be if you try to manage it alone. It’s like running a race, he states, “Your body might feel bad or hurt, but if we persevere through it, we can get through it.” Furthermore, he wants you to take that step and get started. “Let’s find the starting line, a place to start, so we can finish the race,” Chase notes. It’s the meaning behind the name, Starting Line Counseling, a place to start and a race to finish.

Starting Line Counseling’s motto is “Where Hope and Healing Begins”. Take that first step, invest in yourself, and let Chase Wade with Starting Line Counseling support your goal of better health.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Christian Brothers Automotive In Celina Continues To Make A Local Impact In Community

In 2015, Mike and Jan Sampeck opened Christian Brothers Automotive in Celina. Mike, a former pharmaceutical salesman, and Jan, who worked in ministry at Chase Oaks Church in Plano, seemed an unlikely duo in the car repair industry. But desiring to live out their faith in their business, Mike and Jan sought a

business opportunity that allowed them to give back to the community and bring light to a dark industry. January and the start of a new year invite most people to focus on their health and wellness. If you think about it, regular car maintenance is very similar. Routine oil and fluid changes, tire balancing, and

checking the car's alignment are all parts of maintaining a vehicle. Jim explains that the best place to start is to check out your owner's manual. The car's engineers and manufacturer have outlined all that is needed to maintain the health of your vehicle.

Christian Brothers has worked tirelessly to establish themselves as an alternative to the dealer. They offer a 3-year, 36,000-mile extended

warranty. They have made the investment in the programs and the tools necessary to diagnose any make or model of car. Their staff is certified by Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), and many are master- and world-class tech certified. In addition, they run an apprentice program to promote professionalism in the industry. Recently, they became an AAA-certified repair shop. Walking in the door, you

can be confident that the Christian Brothers team will thoroughly evaluate your vehicle and help you prioritize your needs.

Mike and Jan explain that their favorite part of their business is their ability to give back to the community. They have been working with Lovepacs and Helping Hands of Celina to assist families requiring help with vehicle maintenance. The September 11th National Day of Service is one of their favorite days as they seek to work with food-insecure families in the community and provide vehicle maintenance to reduce stressors for family members. If you are in the store for service, take a moment to notice the "DipJar." It is an invitation to learn more about local

charities and get involved. Make a $15 donation to the charity highlighted on the jar and receive a $30 discount on your service bill.

Christian Brothers is a bright spot in the vehicle repair industry. They are dedicated to developing repeat customers and long-term relationships with community members. Whether Mike and Jan are donating cash to a cause or coordinating with supplies to donate parts, they are committed to giving back to the community that has opened its arms to them.

MEN’S HEALTH WITH TRUE LIGHT CHIROPRACTIC

Strengthening Fathers, Families, And Community In Celina

For Dr. Kelsey and Dr. Colton Wood, the decision to open True Light Chiropractic in Celina was a journey rooted in both professional focus and personal vision. The couple, both passionate about natural health care, opened their doors in 2019 with an aim to offer a practice in a community that not only valued health, but also nurtured family life. They wanted a small town with a welcoming, family-oriented feel– a place that mirrored their own values.

“There were young families everywhere and vendors, ‘This is exactly what we wanted.’ It was a small town where we could raise a family, where we felt safe,” Colton said. “We just felt pulled to Celina. So, we knew that's where we wanted to open.”

While True Light Chiropractic specializes in prenatal and pediatric care, the Woods have found that the men always end up following their families and experience transformative results. The Woods’ practice has changed dads' and husbands' health routines. Colton also explained how pregnancy is not just a mom matter, but a family matter that men play an important role in.

“[The birth process] gives men a fantastic opportunity to be a spiritual leader that your family needs. It’s important to be that rock and foundation whenever you're questioning things along the way,” Colton said. “The community of men that we have in our office, whether staff or patients, are all very

engaged with their families. So normally when we go an alternative route to healthcare, it creates this natural engagement and community feel within your family but also [with] people around you.”

Chiropractic care for men is often seen as an afterthought, with most focus placed on treating women during pregnancy or babies for wellness checkups. But Colton and Kelsey have worked to shift that paradigm. They want men to know that they, too, can benefit from chiropractic care. Whether they’re looking to reduce stress, improve mobility, or simply feel better in their everyday life, True Light has solutions to fit the bill.

“As the dad, you're seen as the provider for the family. You're seen as the protector for the family. So, most of the time, they're under a lot of strain but they don't show that they're carrying that burden,” Colton said. “They actually have a lot of internal pressure, so when we're adjusting and going through care plans with dads, [it’s] more so to help them manage and adapt to their day-to-day stress. It leads to better sleep, less tension, less fatigue, being able to be present with your family, and

“I thought, let's create a community for the men of the area, including the office, that way they can meet talk about wellness things, talk about lifestyle habits.’” Colton said. “It kind of sparked, too. I think at the beginning of the year, we're going to start the 75 Hard Challenge, which is an intense mental health challenge. I think all the guys in the office are going to try and see if they want to do that.”

Through events like Wellness on Tap and their practice’s consistent care, Colton and Kelsey are fostering a culture of support, where men feel comfortable talking about their health and well-being. For the Woods, True Light Chiropractic isn’t just about adjusting spines, it’s about adjusting mindsets, creating a

even getting sick less often. That way, you're able to serve your family and you're able to serve the people around you better.”

One of the most rewarding aspects of their work, Colton says, is seeing the transformation in fathers. Many come to True Light Chiropractic with specific goals in mind, generally being centered on being more present for their families. “Many of the goals are around being able to play with their kids or being able to get on the ground with their baby and being able to get back up and not be in pain,” Colton said.  “Through care, that just becomes normal for them, they forget that they weren't able to do that before. That is absolutely our favorite thing.”

The Woods are also passionate about creating community among the men in their office. They understand that health isn’t just about treatments, it’s about building relationships and offering support. That’s why Colton started Wellness on Tap, an informal gathering for the men of Celina and the surrounding areas to come together, share health tips, and build connections.

community, and helping men lead healthier, happier lives for the benefit of their families and themselves.

“We really get to develop good relationships with [patients], and they honestly become more like family in our office, so that is also another thing that just fulfills us so much,” Colton said. “We see them around town, and it's like, ‘That's the exact reason why we wanted to come to Celina because we knew we would develop a deeper relationship with people.' To get to see them out and about and in town but also in our office, that's what it's all about.”

True Light Chiropractic’s practice is located at 501 W Walnut St Ste. 200 in Celina, or online at truelightchiropractic.com.

LONE STAR VISION

Partnering

With Grace Bridge To Offer Low-Cost Eye Care To The Community

Lone Star Vision and Grace Bridge partner to provide free eye exams to residents of Collin, Grayson, and Denton counties. Patients can purchase new prescription lenses at a low cost while receiving personalized and topnotch eye care. Since the Eye Care Clinic’s inception seven years ago, Dr. Todd Brantley and his staff have evaluated and cared for thousands of patients through the relationship with Grace Bridge by providing onsite appointments at the monthly food distribution. While Grace Bridge addresses food insecurities and spiritual needs, Lone Star Vision works toward their goal to aid patients in seeing the world clearly.

A 1999 graduate of the University of Houston’s College of Optometry, Dr. Todd Brantley has lived in Celina since the summer of 2013. He opened the first Celina Lone Star Vision later that year and, as of January of 2024, moved into a beautiful new location in the Doe Branch Office Complex at 205 S. Preston Road. Dr. Brantley and his family have been intimately involved in the Celina community. His daughter began as a second grader and later participated as a Celina High School varsity soccer player, aiding the team in a 3-time State Championship.

The Brantley family and Lone Star Vision love being a part of the Celina community through the support of programs that help aid those in need either financially, or with

services they provide, or products the office carries. The people of Celina are giving, generous, and welcoming, and Lone Star Vision enjoys investing in Celina and the surrounding communities. Dr. Brantley shares the why and how Lone Star Vision entered into a partnership with Grace Bridge: “I’ve always loved serving and helping others, always wanting to give back to help others, through the churches we are part of and in our own lives. With the gift I have been given as an eye doctor, I was approached to possibly fulfill a community need beyond food and personal care needs. It was a great opportunity when I met with Carter Morris, the President and Co-Founder of Grace Bridge, over lunch and discussed  “what could be.” We figured out a way to create eye exams and an eye clinic for those who couldn’t access annual eye care. The monthly Eye Care Clinic with Grace Bridge’s

food distribution has provided a way to help a few thousand people in the area. I like that our staff and other doctors in the clinic participate in helping. Lone Star Vision has always been about helping – we see our abilities to help in this way as a privilege. Serving our community is the heart of who we are as a practice. It is a no-brainer for us.”

Grace Bridge hosts a monthly Eye Care Clinic with Lone Star Vision, seeing 15 to 20 patients during the food distribution. Patients receive a free eye exam and access to low-cost prescription lenses. Lone Star Vision

hopes to work with Grace Bridge to make the Eye Care Clinic grow with a greater reach by recruiting more doctors such as Dr. Paola Diaz. Dr. Diaz is an active Lone Star Vision staff member and enjoys assisting with the Eye Care Clinic when available.

Regular eye exams are an important part of maintaining your overall health. Adults should have eye exams every 1 to 2 years depending on existing medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, or prior eye injuries. Eye exams are important for vision, but also can help identify health problems from cognitive decline to diabetes. A detailed review of the eye can provide an optometrist with early warning signs of different health problems such as autoimmune disorders, glaucoma, and cataracts.

MEET DARTH

Celina Police Station Dog Trained By K9s For Warriors To Help Reduce Stress Of Officer s

Dog lovers and scientists agree that dogs can enhance a person's emotional well-being. They can lower blood pressure, reduce levels of stress hormones, and promote a positive mood. Additionally, dogs can help decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as reduce feelings of anger. While dogs are not a cure-all for mental health issues, they can serve as a helpful starting point.

Police officers are almost twice as likely to experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and depression compared to the general population. One in ten police officers faces other mental health challenges. They are also more prone to sleep disturbances and often experience

heightened anger. The contributing factors to these issues include the constant demands of the job, irregular work hours, the emotional toll of handling traumatic incidents, and the lack of accessible mental health resources specifically tailored for the law enforcement community.

Both Celina Police Chief Cullison and Assistant Chief Brown are aware of the day-to-day impacts the job has on their officers and support staff. From the design of the new Celina Police Station to the availability of new resources, they are both committed to improving the mental health treatment of their officers. One of those new resources is the adoption of Darth, a station dog

trained by the K9s for Warriors organization, to reduce stress and encourage officers to take a break.

Officer Shawna Quillin came up with the idea of introducing a station dog on the way home from a family trip. After bouncing off the idea with other family members who are also police officers, she spent a month researching best practices, benefits, and what is required to support a station dog program. She contacted Monarch Veterinary Hospital in Celina, who was willing to donate veterinary services to the program. She also secured a commitment from the Celina Community Police Foundation to provide ongoing food and supplies.

In May, Officer Quillin presented her idea to Chief Cullison and Assistant Chief Brown, who immediately said yes. They had both recently attended a policeman's memorial service and noticed another department in the area had a station dog. They realized this is another tool police department leadership can give officers to promote their mental health and well-being.

Officer Quillin began collaborating with Greg Wells from K9s For Warriors to find the perfect fit for the new Celina Police Station. The K9s For Warriors Station Dog Program, recognized by the American Kennel Club, partners with law enforcement and first responder agencies to provide dogs that support police officers, firefighters, dispatchers, and victims.

Soon, they identified a qualified dog named Darth in San Antonio. Darth is a two-and-a-half-year-old Black Lab with some Anatolian Shepherd mixed in. Officer Quillin describes him as a playful goofball who is entirely unaware of his size, weighing in at 80 pounds of muscle and energy. He’s a sweet dog with no aggression, indeed a lover, not a fighter. He was initially in a service dog training program, but after identifying some hip issues, he was moved to a therapy dog training program. Officer Quillin shared, "He has the perfect temperament to be a station dog; he loves everyone he meets."

The new Celina Police Station held its grand opening on July 17th, and Darth came home on July 19th, 2024, to live with Officer Quillin

and her family. They have been going through extensive training, including obedience, commands, how to walk with him, and how to lead him. About a week after arriving, he started going to the station with Officer Quillin. He has his crate, food bowls, toys at the station, and a notebook to track his activities throughout the day.

A station dog serves as a therapy dog, supporting the officers. Therapy dogs also receive training but have a completely different type of job from service dogs. Their responsibilities are to provide psychological or physiological therapy to individuals other than their handlers. These dogs have stable temperaments and friendly, easy-going personalities.

When officers return to the station after a challenging day, Darth always greets them with joy. Officer Quillian remarked, "He helps the officers reset." The officers and station staff can take him outside to throw a ball, go for a walk, wrestle, or simply pet him. Darth excels at team building; everyone in the office looks forward to seeing him and gathers around him.

Darth is not a working police dog and cannot accompany the officers on patrol or calls. Rather, he works as an ambassador for the department in the community. He is in training to attend community events, participate in programs for veterans, attend ribbon-cutting events, and visit local fire stations. Officer Quillian wants the community to know him as a friendly therapy dog and not be intimidated by his bigger-than-life personality.

When Darth is not at the station, he enjoys spending time with his family at home. He has formed close friendships with the other pets belonging to Office Quillian. Sometimes, Darth gets “the zoomies” and spins around the house like the Tasmanian devil. Office Quillian jokes that her therapy dog makes her anxious as he dashes around the house.

This year, you can expect to see Darth and Officer Quillian out and about the community, engaging with the citizens of Celina and surrounding communities.

BUILDING HEALTHIER

HEAR FROM NASM-CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER ABOUT ESTABLISHING THE BEST HABITS

The new year is a classic kickoff to start fresh and build many resolutions that we all hope stick around. How many times do your resolutions fall through each year? It can be challenging to build new habits and switch up routines if you’re looking for a change. That’s why we rounded up the best advice to establishing habits and making them stay for good. We spoke with Danielle Johnston, National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)-certified personal trainer and aspiring kinesiologist, who broke down her top tips to maintaining healthy habits this new year.

HABITS

START WITH A SMALL HABIT AND MAKE IT SOMETHING YOU ENJOY

Think 1-3 things maximum and then give yourself at least a month or two to apply the change. If you like to eat and cook, maybe try a new recipe or browse a cookbook in the library or bookstore for inspiration. If you like fashion, maybe try cleaning out a section of your closet (i.e. tops, bottoms, shoes, etc) to make way for 1 new piece. If you like being outdoors, maybe you try adding in just a 5 minute walk down the road.

IF YOU MISS A DAY, TRY AGAIN

If you miss a day or make a mistake with whatever resolution you’re working on, take that next opportunity to try again. Danielle uses the goal to eat healthier as an example. Health can be interpreted in many different ways but if you can take the small first step of looking at ingredients, that alone can make a world’s difference in the recipe you use so maybe you don’t even have to alter or substitute it. Or if your goal is to snack less but one day you snack more, don’t wave the flag and sabotage your efforts. Take a minute to breathe through the moment and then move on, enjoying the ebb and flow of health instead of going all in or nothing. Starting small allows you to adjust everyday habits that will, with time, transition to lifestyle changes.

CREATE 3 DIFFERENT TYPES OF RESOLUTIONS

Danielle says to create 1 health resolution, 1 personal resolution, and 1 professional resolution as it is the best format to better yourself in multiple realms instead of just physical health. Too often, we get caught up in this “New Year New Me” mindset and create a list of things you want to change or start doing. But as they get lost in the busy to-do list of life and we forget,

“The new year is a classic kickoff  to start fresh and build many resolutions that we all hope stick around.”

we can also feel like a failure and revert to “I’ll try again tomorrow or next year.” But what if you don’t have to start over, just keep going.

TRACK YOUR PROGRESS AND VISUALIZE YOUR FUTURE

Whether you keep a notebook of your habit building, or keep track on your phone, it is important to acknowledge the personal progress made. This will also help you see the future that you want to build as you make more desirable changes in your life. If you want to track how you feel after working out, it will serve as a reflection on the progress made through what has been written down. This will encourage you to continue pushing for your goals!

whirled PEAS!

Vegetable juice is a great addition to your diet especially if you want to lose weight, gain energy, and feel great. Sometimes life gets too busy and you don’t have the time to cook healthy meals. Fall in love with leafy greens, fresh fruit, nut milks, and chia seeds all combined to make a quick, easy, and delicious contribution to your day.

smart SWEETS

The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

Nutrient-Rich Dessert To The Rescue

This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste, oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious.

Combine:

• 1 cup wheat flour

• 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled

• 2 cups oats

• 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts

• 1 teaspoon cinnamon

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 2 tablespoons chia seeds

• 2/3 cup raisins

• Optional: chocolate chips as desired

• Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.

Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa.

Add this mixture slowly to combine:

• 2 eggs

• 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter

• 1/2 cup honey

• 1 banana

• 1 teaspoon vanilla

Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.

Quinoa BREAKFAST Bars

Frozen PEANUT BUTTER Bites

Danger ahead: this snack is amazing. It’s the easiest of the bunch and also satisfies a sweet tooth craving. This can be whipped together in just 5 minutes and makes just a small amount. Feel free to take creative liberty here with your amounts, but if you make it to this recipe, they are around 90 calories per bite.

1. Cut a banana into 8-10 small slices, around 1/2 inch each.

2. Spread 1/2 tablespoon of peanut butter (or your choice of nut butter) on each banana slice.

3. Drizzle a small amount of melted chocolate chips or caramel over each bite.

4. Freeze for 15-20 minutes and enjoy!

Pro tip: A dash of sea salt flakes on top of these can be *chef’s kiss.*

These are great to keep on hand in the freezer all weeklong. Once they set, add them to a closed container to keep the bananas from browning.

Late night snack cravings are real! When finding yourself rooting through the cabinets for a sweet fix, these protein cookie dough bites are a great way to curb temptation. This recipe yields around 20 small bites, which can be cut into small squares or rolled into dough balls. Each bite is around 105 calories. If you find the dough is a little too dry, add a dash of milk as needed.

Ingredients

• 1/4 cup milk

• 1/2 cup vanilla protein powder

• 1/4 cup maple syrup

• 1/4 cup peanut butter (or alternate nut or sunflower butter)

• 1 cup almond flour

• 1 teaspoon vanilla

• Chocolate chips as desired

Pro tip: Use mini chocolate chips and for a dash of savory add sea salt flakes on top. Once combined, store the bites in the refrigerator in a covered container to keep them moist.
