Editor’s Letter

Raise YOUR Glass

october 2014

W

hen John and I have a chance to go out on the town of Chesterfield together, we enjoy a glass or two of wine or beer from time to time. The funny thing is we have completely opposite tastes in wine. John prefers the driest, most robust red wines, while I like fruity, sweet and light white wines. Sharing a bottle of wine is pretty much out for us. When it comes to tastes in beer, ours are also polar opposites. Go figure. John goes for the darkest, thickest stout, whereas I like light and pale ales. One thing we do have in common is an interest in trying different craft beers. Last fall we found we both really liked the taste of pumpkin beer and an apple cider beer. It was rather exciting to find a common ground pair of brews! No matter what your taste is in beers or wines our great City of Chesterfield has a plethora of venues where you can enjoy libations and even make your own spirits. (Yes, it is legal, and no it doesn’t involve your bathtub.) In our Beer and Wine issue this month, we explore some stories about our community’s “spirited” social history, learn about a libation of the past and discover some opportunities for making your own brews and vinos. Whether you make your own beer or simply make a purchase of beer that has already been brewed, there are bound to be some stray beers left after your social gathering. When we have a party at our house, we traditionally have disposed of leftover liquor. Since we have several teens and emerging teens in our household, John and I made the choice not to keep alcoholic beverages in the house. Though our children are quite well-behaved and responsible, kids will be kids, and we figure it best not to have the temptation around. It wasn’t that long ago that we were teenagers…well at least it doesn’t seem like that long ago…anyway, I digress…in this issue, you will also learn several fascinating and practical uses for your leftover brew. Now, rather than pouring it down the drain, we will put our extra beer to good use! “Waste not, want not,” right? In addition to parties and other informal get-togethers, consider forming a wine tasting club or beer brewing club in your Chesterfield neighborhood. Both would be great ways to have more excuses to get together to socialize and to try your hand at something new. If you do form a spirit based group, be sure to invest in some wine charms or glass markers so you’ll be sure you are raising YOUR glass come toast time. Charmed or not, everyone knows which one is my glass; it’s the one with the bright, reddish-pink lipstick around the rim!

APRONS OF SNOW HAVE GOT TO GO The City of Chesterfield will provide a Driveway Apron Snow Removal Program this winter to assist disabled and physically challenged residents in the removal of windrows that accumulate in the front of residential driveway aprons after snowplowing operations. Windrows are created when a large amount of snow from the street rolls off of the edge of the plow blade and accumulates at the base of the driveway apron. During significant snow events, windrows at the base of residential driveways can become quite large, re-freeze, and sometimes be difficult to remove. 10

Chesterfield Lifestyle | October 2014

The program was unanimously approved at the August 4 City Council meeting in order to assist those residents who experience difficulty in removing snow accumulations from their driveways due to disability. The City of Chesterfield will begin driveway apron snow removal operations ONLY after completion of all snow and ice removal operations on public streets and at City facilities. The snow accumulation from the driveway apron must exceed two (2) inches during any single snow event. The snow accumulation will be measured at the City of Chesterfield City Hall in accordance with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) guidelines. The program is designed to provide an additional service to qualifying residents in order to provide better access for emergency situations. In order to qualify for this program, Chesterfield residents must live in a private, single family residential home and have a diagnosed medical condition preventing them from removing snow from their driveway. To request this service, residents must complete three forms: Participant Information Form, Physician Confirmation Form and Participant Release Form, which are each available on the City’s website, Chesterfield.mo.us under the Public Works drop down menu. Applications must be received at least two weeks prior to a snow storm to allow for application review and processing. This program will

be implemented on a one year trial basis and may be discontinued at any time. If you have any questions, please call the City of Chesterfield Department of Public Services at 636.537.4762.

er! Sorry, readers, it is not a garden hose. Good guesses, though. The photograph is a close-up of a piece of playground equipment at Faust Park. Go “Corkless” & Consider a Cask C

hesterfield residents, who are members of a wine club or thinking of starting a wine club, will be pleased to learn that luxury wines are now available for delivery by the cask. Gather your friends and break out those new wine charms-the more the merrier! Andegavia Cask Wines recently announced the introduction of the first sustainably-packaged luxury wine brand with direct-to-consumer delivery. Blending the heritage of Old-World Europe with the spirit of today’s modern-day wine drinker, the smartly-designed Andegavia cask seals high-end varietals in recyclable packaging for a greener, more cost-effective way to enjoy luxury wines every day. Andegavia’s exceptional cask wines are sourced from top wine regions, including Napa and Sonoma Valley, and provide a “wine-on-tap” experience at home. With the popularity of sustainably-packaged wine booming overseas, and a growing domestic market of daily wine drinkers, Andegavia represents the first U.S. product that pairs luxury-class and ultra-premium wines with the convenience, quality, and freshness offered by cask wine. As an additional benefit for consumers, modern packaging means that a substantially larger share of production dollars goes toward the quality of wine, rather than expensive glass bottles and shipping. As a result, Andegavia’s wine casks are 30 to 40 percent less expensive than bottled wines of comparable quality. Named for one of the original wine-growing regions in France 14

Chesterfield Lifestyle | October 2014

where wine was once stored and shipped in large barrels or “casks,” Andegavia wines are sealed in lightweight, three-liter containers crafted from 100 percent recyclable materials, from the corrugated cardboard exterior to the plastic bladder. Each cask contains the equivalent of four 750 ml bottles of wine and the bladder inside protects the wine from oxidization, keeping it fresh for approximately four weeks once tapped. Andegavia wines are created by one of Sonoma and Napa Valleys’ top winemaking teams, recognized for producing exceptional ultra-premium and luxury-class wines. For the product’s introduction, Andegavia head winemaker Patrick Saboe and his team have produced four exceptional California varietals, including: 2011 Ruthven Napa Valley Red Blend, 2012 Merrill Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, 2011 Nadalini Red Blend, and 2012 Ruthven Napa Valley Chardonnay. Upcoming releases will include a Rhone-style, dry Rosé and a crisp, Italian-style Pinot Grigio for the summer season. Future releases will include wines from France, Italy and other international winemaking regions. Each three-liter wine cask is priced between $68-78 with a $10 flat shipping rate, and is also available through the Andegavia Wine Club at a discounted price as part of a monthly shipment. The initial run of casks is now available for shipment to 35 states, including Missouri. Visit: Andegavia.com

Things You Can Do with Your Leftover Brew Article Elizabeth Harris Photos John Babb

S

o, the party’s over…Wait! Don’t dump out those extra beers. You will never look at your household chores and beauty regimes in the same old way once you try some of these things to do with your leftover brew. Soak the Slugs

Many of our yards in Chesterfield boast mature trees which provide shade and a perfect place for planting hostas. The only thing that loves hostas, more than hostas love shade, is a slug. Make that a family of slugs! Come to find, slugs also love beer. Anywhere in your yard or garden that is threatened by a scad of hungry slugs is a great spot to place a shallow dish of beer. The slugs will be attracted to the sweet scent and trail into the dish, only to become “bloatedly beer- logged” and thus to “bug” you no more. Polish Pots and Pennies

Over time, things copper develop a patina and lose their original shine. Soaking a copper pot or a copper penny in beer for a spell, and then lightly scrubbing it will bring back the shine. Beer has a light acidity that chemically reacts with the natural oxidization that forms on copper items. Beer can also be used to perk up the shine on other types of metal, too, removing deposits. This is also a great reason never to drink or serve beer from metal containers that are not lined or treated for such purpose.

16

Chesterfield Lifestyle | October 2014

Help Your Hair

Do you desire a little more shine and a wee bit more body and volume to your hair? Flat, warm beer may not be appetizing to your taste buds, but tufts of hair rejoice over it. One man’s trash is another’s hair’s treasure. Shampoo normally and replace your regular conditioner with beer, the warmer and flatter the better. Rinse, thoroughly, and voila! –shiny, bouncy hair will be yours, thanks to the vitamin B and natural sugars in beer. Work Wonders on Wood

A great way to “go green” in your housecleaning is to use leftover beer to polish and restore the natural beauty of your wood furniture. Lightly soak a microfiber cloth with beer and polish away. You will be surprised at the superior polishing capabilities of beer. Scratches and imperfections in wood are also camouflaged when the natural oils from the hops fill in the places that lack finish. You can also use beer on unfinished wood furniture to give it a unique and natural finish. Stain Stopper

This is a case of using one beverage to stop the staining of another. When coffee or tea spills threaten to stain your carpet, beer can be an even bigger hero than club soda. Carbonated, lightly-colored beer can be poured onto the stain and then blotted—

never rubbed. Pour, blot and repeat until the stain is lifted. This technique also works in removing a wine stain. The sooner the better is the motto for the treatment of any stain, as you have a better chance for its removal if a stain is not allowed to “set”.

People who live in a glass house have to answer the door. ~Karl Pilkington

Marinate Meats

Beer makes a fantastic marinade for any meat. You can experiment with all different varieties of craft beers to bring out different flavors. Marinating pork before cooking in an apple beer makes for a simply delicious, sweet and tender dish. A thick, dark stout tenderizes beef while it adds a robust flavor to the meat. Great as it may smell, it is important to remember not to drink the marinade. You can, however, drink a beer or two while your meat is marinating. Beer Bath

Wealthy people of ancient cultures were known to bathe in beer. Beer offers skin softening and conditioning properties. Filling an entire bathtub with beer would be impractical and expensive. You can achieve the desired results by adding a few beers to your bath water and taking a nice lengthy soak. You will want to be sure and rinse well by showering off after your beer bath; especially if you decide to bathe in beer before going to the office. You want to raise brows because of your soft, supple skin, not for your sudsy-scented self. Aren’t you glad you kept those last few beers around? Your hostas, your hair and your ham... will thank you!

Make Your Own Beer (and Wine) Article Mary Shapiro | Photos John Babb

I

f the Egyptians, Romans and other ancient civilizations were able to make their own beer and wine, so can you. While most of today’s do-it-yourselfers won’t take on pyramid building or aqueduct installations, they’re happy to follow their ancestors in the quest to produce fermented beverages. Some Chesterfield area businesses are catering to the curious who want to become connoisseurs but don’t know how to get started. The J2 Brewing Exbeerience, a brew-your-own beer opportunity in a retail setting, opened September 10th, 2013 at 161 Long Road, Suite 105 in Chesterfield to help novices gain confidence in brewing their own beer. Co-owners Jeff Harlan and Jeff “Jonesy” Jones - the business name comes from their shared first names - are dedicated to helping people who are interested in brewing their own beer. Their business is sandwiched be-

18

Chesterfield Lifestyle | October 2014

tween PM BBQ and International Tap House on Long Road at Edison Avenue. J2 provides an inventory of bulk malts, packaged hops, yeasts, brewing kits and an assortment of homebrew supplies, and the shop teaches brewing in an informal

setting. J2 offers four brewing stations with electric kettles and a bottling station. People can set up brew sessions, starting at $99 per session, with up to four people able to use each kettle at a time. A brew master walks patrons through each step of brewing. After the beer ferments in a “beer nursery” for two weeks, people return for

the bottling step of the process. Participants then take home their carbonating beer which is stored for 7 to 10 days before refrigerating and drinking it. Each session yields at least two dozen 22-ounce bottles of beer, and J2 offers more than 50 types of beer that can be brewed. “We still also work daytime jobs - we’re aircraft mechanics, working together for about seven years in the same shop at Spirit of St. Louis Airport,” said Jones. Jones got into home brewing, and Harlan, eventually joined the effort. “I got competitive with my brewing at home and started to get awards and recognition,” Jones said. “We started J2 because nobody was out there helping people who needed help to start brewing...the site was a no-brainer, because the International Tap House, where we’ve been patrons, is right next door.” Harlan said he enjoys “creating some-

thing out of nothing, using only barley, water, yeast, hops and wheat - out of that, you can make thousands of varieties of beer.” J2 is putting on its latest “Rocktoberfest” - the event originally was held at Jones’ house and then at the store last year but outgrew those sites - from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Chesterfield Amphitheater, 631 Veterans Place Drive. Featured will be, of course, beer, as well as live music including the Steve Ewing Band, the Matt Rowland Band and the Band of Misfits and food. Tickets cost $12.5 and proceeds from the event will benefit KEEN St. Louis, a non-profit organization, that provides free recreational programs for kids with physical and developmental disabilities. For more information, call 636.536.9455 or visit J2brewing. com or BrownPaperTickets.com. “The hobby can be expensive but doesn’t have to be,” Jones said, adding the store has contacts with about 500 customers. “After all, people have been brewing beer for thousands of years. I love teaching folks to do this, showing a passion for what I do and sharing that with others. And people get the satisfaction and the bragging rights of doing this themselves. They get amped up,” said Jones. J2 also invites people who are already brewing at home to share their experiences and products at the store from 5pm to 8pm on the first Wednesday of every month.

Joe Schifano, whose family owns Petropolis Pet Center in Chesterfield, has been a regular J2 customer. “I got started going there in January, because I was looking for a way to get into home brewing,” said Schifano. “J2 is a great place to go to get started. You can learn what to do from people who have the supplies and experience before you spend a lot of money. They walk you through each step of the process. And the product you get isn’t like beer from a store - it’s fresher and more natural.” The desire and passion for “making your own” also applies to wine, said Dave Deaton, owner of St. Louis Wine & Beer Making, LLC, at 231 Lamp and Lantern Village in Chesterfield. His store sells a variety of beer and wine-making supplies - including more than 50 strains of yeast and nearly 50 kinds of hops - and offers regular classes for making both. There are free demonstrations of beer making at the store from 10am to 2pm on the first Saturday of every month. The next wine-making class will be from 6pm to 9pm on October 15. Classes cost $30 each and include supplies. For more information on products and classes at St. Louis Beer and Wine Making, call 636.230.8277 or visit WineandBeerMaking.com. Deaton had been a computer program-

mer who’d been involved in home brewing for more than 25 years before he became owner of the business. Deaton has owned the business for eight years but the firm has been at Lamp and Lantern under the current name since 1990 and had originally started in the mid-1970s under the name Wine Art of St. Louis. The store serves the metro St. Louis area and beyond, with customers in St. Genevieve, Columbia and Jefferson City. About 10,000 people will come into the store in the course of a year, according to Deaton. “We also deal with wineries in the state and have an internet business to serve the whole country and international customers, supplying people with all ingredients, equipment, books and videos on the subject of making beer and wine,” said Deaton. “Even people who make beer and wine at home often come in and talk to us for troubleshooting.” He said people are curious about making beer or wine, often because they have a relative or friend who’s been into the hobby. “They want to get their feet wet,” Deaton said. “There’s a misconception that making beer or wine is really hard to do. But that stems from gigantic breweries that want to make it seem complicated, because it makes them look good. Five thousand years ago, Egyptians were continued >

making beer with no technology, and wine dates back thousands of years, too. If you can cook spaghetti, you can make beer or wine.” Deaton added that civilization really got started so people could make bread and beer. “They wanted constant access to grain for making both, so they started planting it and set up villages to protect the crops,” Deaton said. A wide variety of fruits - such as blueberries, grapes, peaches, apples, dates, raspberries, blackberries, elderberries, strawberries and more - and even tomatoes, onions and dandelions can be used to make wine. Larry Brost, of Wildwood, attended a recent winemaking class using a kit at Deaton’s store. “I’m a newbie but I have a vineyard with 30 vines at my home which I started a couple of springs ago,” Brost said. Brost also belongs to the Missouri Winemaking Society, a nonprofit organization of amateur winemakers founded in 1977 and which holds meetings at 7:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at St. Gerard Majella Church, at 1971 Dougherty Ferry Road in Kirkwood. For more information on that group, email info@MoWinemakers.org. The group has a website: MoWinemakers.org. “I want to learn more about winemaking so, as my vineyard starts to produce Norton grapes, I’m a little more up on the learning curve,” Brost said. Deaton warned Brost about vineyard hazards to avoid, advocating the use of netting over the vines. “Otherwise, birds can get thirsty and destroy a vineyard,” Deaton said. Brost has also invested in a vineyard fence to ward off hungry deer. Deaton said the University of Missouri Extension offers resources for winemakers, including classes to learn how to cultivate grapes. During the class, Deaton explained the best payoff in making your own wine. “You can do it for less than $5 a bottle.” Whether it is beer or wine that you prefer (or both) you too, can make your own brew.

History 101

The Spirits of Chesterfield Past

Article Aimee Pellet Photos Provided by Aimee Pellet

I

have to admit that when I heard the theme of this month’s issue was beer and wine, I had a difficult time conjuring up an image of the families of the farming community of Chesterfield sitting down to an exquisite Châteauneuf-du-Pape and foie gras. It does stand to reason that while some of the earlier and wealthier residents may have had access to the finer things in life, most of the inhabitants of Chesterfield a hundred years ago, were farmers or small merchants. Of course, wine was not unheard of in the area, as Germans brought the beverage to the area in the 1830s. However, most of that wine production centered in the areas further upstream along the Missouri River in areas such as Hermann and Augusta and The Prohibition laws brought a halt to much of that industry for a time. It seems logical that the farming community of Chesterfield was likely more concerned with raising livestock, growing food and storing grain than partaking in the making of a German Riesling? When I asked my mother’s cousin, Linda Murphy, if she knew whether or not our Chesterfield ancestors made or drank wine, she said, “Well, Gramps used to make Cherry Bounce.” Emil Hoefer was my great-grandfather and better known to us as “Gramps”. He and my great-grandmother, Lena, were life-long residents of Chesterfield. So, what exactly was this so-called “Cherry Bounce?” Just like many things on a farm, spirits were often made at home. The basic idea of the “family recipe” for Cherry Bounce is as follows: Montmorency pie cherries were taken from the trees in the backyard and added – pits and all -- to a large brown crockery jug. Sugar was added and the remainder of the jug was then filled with grain alcohol. It was possibly vodka, but more likely bootleg whiskey, which was quite common in the area. After an excruciating three month wait you would have Cherry Bounce. “He hid it in the armoire in the basement, I assume to keep it from [Lena]. If that was his thought he didn’t know his wife very well,” says Murphy.

Endeavors, such as distilling your own whiskey, did not come without risk. One night Gramps heard a tremendous noise at their farm near the Missouri River. He drove to the riverbank and took his small boat to a sandbar. There he found two men badly burned from when their still exploded. He took both to a hospital, a somewhat rare occurrence at the time since most hospitals were in St. Louis, indicating the severity of injuries. Though wine was relatively expensive, and bootlegging could be risky, beer was readily available, thanks in part to the region’s booming beer trade. Germans brought beer-making to St. Louis around the same time that winemakers were planting vines west of Chesterfield. Estimates by historians put the possible number of breweries in the mid-18th century at 40-50. While there was no large scale brewing in Chesterfield, saloons certainly did exist. Walter Gerlach’s Tavern was located near Highway 40 and Clarkson Road. E.W. Zierenberg’s general store – still standing at the intersection of Olive Blvd. and Hog Hollow Rd. – served many purposes, including a saloon. Hine Station Hotel was located at the bottom of Hog Hollow Hill and was a two story hotel and saloon, named after the railroad stop nearby. The hotel was frequented primarily by employees of the railroad or the Water Company and workers at the nearby quarry. When the quarry closed in 1903, the hotel also closed. There’s no record of whether women frequented these establishments, although if they did it was probably not something to brag about. Schwenk’s Dance Hall and

Restaurant, also near Highway 40 and Clarkson Road assumes a necessary female presence and was probably quite a bit more respectable. These establishments and their offered libations give us a glimpse into the early social life of the area. Farming today is a difficult profession at best, but in the years before mechanization it was even more challenging and exhausting. It often meant hours of work put in before daylight and long after the sun had set. That doesn’t mean families didn’t leave time for a little fun here and there, especially to celebrate the harvests. Without the distractions of modern entertainment – limited radio, no televisions until the 1950s and certainly long before the arrival of the Internet – entertainment and relaxation time was often spent simply enjoying company of others. Dances, picnics and card games were popular pastimes. River clubhouses were also a popular way to socialize. Several families from the city of St. Louis, notably the Frosts and Rostecks, built these clubhouses along the banks of the Missouri River, in the area now occupied by Missouri American Water Co. Mr. Frost worked in one of the St. Louis breweries and folks would come for the weekends to visit with local families, play cards or just relax. Murphy remembers, “I went to the club[houses] on the river. I was young. I remember it was festive, lots of people - many of whom I barely knew -- and food everywhere -- the original potluck.” Sometimes after an evening of partying at the clubhouse, they would come to the farm Gramps owned and continue the party in the kitchen. It has been said they would make so much noise that Emil and Lena would eventually wake up. The family story always ended there, leaving us to ask if our great-grandparents ever joined in the fun! Entertainment took on a simpler quality. Some of the families would put a piano in the back of a truck and drive up and down Olive Street Road (as it was then known) singing to the piano music. The story goes perhaps, the more spirits imbibed, the more “spirited” the songs would become. Emil’s sister would then tell everyone to stop singing as they drove by the church. Today when I sit with a glass of wine or a cold beer and inevitably pick up my Smartphone or stream a movie, I often reflect on a time when wine was scarce, beer was unladylike, bootlegging was downright hazardous, and singing along with a piano in the back of a truck was considered great social entertainment. When, I am stuck in traffic, I try to envision so few cars on Olive Blvd. that a mobile pick-up truck piano party would even be possible.

Real Wives

Meet Terri Arscott real wives of Chesterfield CL: How Long have you lived in Chesterfield? TA: We have lived in Chesterfield since 1994. First we lived at Olive & 141 in Woodlake Village and then we moved to our current home on Chesterton Lane in 1997. CL: Who lives in your household? TA: The members of my family are my husband, Peter, our two teenage sons, Brandon, age 19, and Alex, age 16, and our Labradoodle, Rocco—and of course me. CL: Why did you choose to live in Chesterfield? TA: We chose Chesterfield for the great school systems and to be closer to my parents--the kids’ grandparents. CL: What do you think is the best part of living in Chesterfield? TA: My favorite aspects of living in Chesterfield are the friendly neighbors and welcoming neighborhoods.

CL: Do you work outside the home? TA: Yes. I own Moxie Marketing Solutions. I am a consultant to small businesses and help owners leverage their time by providing a menu of outsourced marketing solutions such as: social media management, search engine presence, and website blogging/editing. Basically, I take care of the busywork so that small business owners can concentrate on the day-to-day operations of their companies. Interested business owners can reach me by email which is terri@marketingmoxiestl.com. CL: What is your personal mission statement? TA: Winston Churchill said it best. “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” CL: Are you involved in any organizations? TA: I am the co-founder and vice-chair of Prosper-Women Entrepreneurs. Our organization was created to close the entrepreneur gender gap in the St. Louis area by supporting, mentoring and investing in women entrepreneurs. You can visit our website, ProsperSTL.com, to find out how to become involved.

CL: What are your guilty pleasures? TA: I love pedicures and massages, but not at the same time. I like to spread them out. They are each more of a treat that way. CL: What is a favorite part of your daily routine? TA: During the workweek, it is spinning class with Cori, at 24 Hour Fitness. She is the best instructor ever! Her students have a love-hate relationship with her. We hate the grueling workouts, but love the results. On Sundays, my favorite time is cooking with my whole family while listening to teen-friendly music—loudly I might add. CL: What do you like to do in your spare time? TA: For the past 14 years, I have created hand-crafted jewelry art pieces for multiple non-profit organizations, friends and family, and of course, myself. CL: What would you consider your greatest accomplishment? TA: Creating a harmonious environment between aging parents, raising teenagers, work-life balance, and all the while keeping my sanity— yes, that would be my greatest accomplishment.

Parting Thoughts

Inspirations & Improvisations Article Alexandra Brookmore

A

s we near the end of picnic season, we move into tailgating season! Whether you’re cheering your favorite team on toward home runs or touchdowns, you’ll always score well with a nice craft beer in hand. There are plenty of places to enjoy your favorite beer, craft or not, Chesterfield has some of the best. Cool, comfortable and never corporate is the motto at the International Tap House. Just think, 500 beers to choose from and a constant 40 on tap, now that’s a lot of beer choices! If you would like to taste your favorite brew, before you commit to a full six bottles, now you can, while you grocery shop. Why not enjoy your shopping time with a nice glass of wine or even, a conveniently cold, craft beer, at the new Lucky’s Market, just on the fringe of Chesterfield. Fall is my favorite time of the year for impromptu parties, watching the game or warming up by the fireplace on a chilly, rainy day. Have you ever had friends drop in around mealtime and then realized there’s practically nothing to eat in the house but a carton of eggs and a can of soup? We’ve all faced those emergencies when one has to do some quick improvisation. My way to be prepared for these unforeseen situations is to

keep a specially stocked shelf with the things I can reach for when I have to make a meal in a hurry. I always have cans of chopped tomatoes, black beans, white beans and broths, soups and pasta in the cabinet. Luckily, there is always enough frozen beef available to complete a bulging bucket of piping hot and delicious chili on a football game day when everyone unexpectedly ends up at our house. We also always have some chilled wine and tasty craft beers on hand for ourselves and our guests to enjoy. Entertaining at home is great, but if cabin fever hits and you find yourself looking for something spirited and fun to experience away from home, Chesterfield offers some unique venues to inspire your creative side. How about painting pictures with a group of friends while enjoying a delightful glass of wine (or three) at Pinot’s Palette? Or perhaps you would like to try your creative hand at brewing your own beer? J2 Brewing Co. and St. Louis Wine & Beer Making can teach you the process, offering classes from start to finish, on becoming your own brew master. Whether you are looking for something inspiring to create or improvising from an empty slate, our Chesterfield community promises to deliver.
