Editor’s Letter

The Concept and Comfort of Home

Austen, author of some of the most beloved novels in the Jane English language, wrote, “There is nothing like staying home

for real comfort.” In addition to Austen’s words, there are literally thousands of famous quotes and songs out there that revolve around the concept of home. Home is more than just a dwelling for shelter. A house is just a house until you make it a home. Almost 2,000 years ago, Pliny the Elder, a Roman author, naturalist and philosopher wrote, “Home is where the heart is.” It is probable that you have seen this saying before perhaps on a sign, plaque or even on a greeting card. No matter where you live, it is the people you love and the heart you put into your house that makes it your home. This especially hits home with me (pun definitely intended) since I live in my home, raise a large family in my home, and work mostly from home. My whole life revolves around and operates out of home so it is highly important to me that my home is an expression of who I am and that it inspires my passions and creativity. In my editor’s picture this month, I am standing in front of the double doors of the main entrance to our home. I invite you in to take a colorific and pictorial tour of the gathering rooms in my Chesterfield residence in the article Crazy for Color, in the Open House section. Just inside the bright red double doors an explosion of carefully chosen colors awaits each visitor. Our choice to paint the walls inside our house with vibrant and unexpected colors is the way that we made our house our home—it is comfortable and beautiful to us. It excites us and ignites us and displays the heart of our family. Turkish poet and playwright Mehmet Murat Ildan observed, “The nice thing about being away from home is the feeling of excitement when returning to it.” Though I spend the majority of my day at home, in between shuttling children to school, activities and appointments, I am still excited to return home each and every time, because the colorful environment we created is a reflection of what inspires us. Just between you and me, I am most excited to return home every other Thursday morning after Debbie, our domestic cleaning professional has worked her magic. The only thing more comfortable to me than our colorful home, is our clean and colorful home—even though the clean part only lasts until the kids get home.

issue of Chesterfield Lifestyle, contained unintentional errors that caused an inaccurate connotation of Morse’s unabridged response to the question, “What is it like to be the artist of the Make Your Mark Mural on the Monarch Levy?” The corrected response is, “Though my name is on the mural as the artist, I did not design the mural. The mural was designed by a team of 60 teens. As an artist experienced in murals and working with teams, I worked to help bring THEIR collective vision to reality. Chesterfield Arts was the driving force and facilitating organization for the project,” says Morse. CONNOTATIONS & CLARIFICATIONS The article, The Beginning; Before We Were Chesterfield, on page 14 of the August issue of Chesterfield Lifestyle contained factual errors regarding the construction date and original use of the historical building located at the intersection of Old Chesterfield Road and Baxter Road. The building was NOT originally built in 1897 as the Chesterfield Post Office, as the article implied. However, the circa 1914 Farmer’s State Bank building did house the area post office and the telephone switchboard at different junctures in Chesterfield’s history. The bank building is the oldest commercial structure in Chesterfield and the ONLY existing rural bank building in all of St. Louis County. Architects Lauren Strutman and Dick Busch acquired the building in 1999, and it was authentically restored to reflect its original appearance. The building became Chesterfield’s fourth property to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The article, Artist Stuart Morse; The Man Behind The Mural, on page 15 of the August

Crazy for

Finding Comfort in Colors that Inspire Article Libby Mullen | Photography John Babb

“Let me look at your house and I will tell you who you are.” --Vikrant Parsai, Indian Author

I

was so inspired by this quote, I set out to make our home a true reflection of myself and my family. I wanted to express our vibrant, fun personalities and highly energetic household, somehow. Since we plan to live out our days in our Chesterfield home on Isleview Drive, and were set on expressing the essence of our family in our decorating, we decided we would go crazy for color… but WHAT colors did we want the rooms? It can be intimidating facing a houseful of blandly bleak colored walls, and deciding which colors to paint them, much like an

16

artist facing a blank canvas. Artist Wassily Kandinsky said, “Color is a power which directly influences the soul.” So, like artists searching for inspirations on a subject to paint, we were searching for inspirations and digging deeply to discover colors we could embrace, enjoy and imagine ourselves surrounded by in each room of our home. These were BIG decisions—soul influencing choices, apparently—no pressure. To start our color selection journey, we made a trip to our local Sherwin-Williams store to start looking at paint swatches. There was as entire wall of the swatches arranged in a pleasant

rainbow-like order. I liked ALL of the colors. It was a similar experience to feeling very hungry, looking over a menu of hundreds of culinary choices and having a really difficult time deciding what to order. Fortunately, Assistant Manager Phil Reisel greeted us and when he learned we were planning to repaint EVERY wall in EVERY room, he gave us a paint swatch fan deck containing ALL of the custom colors they offer. The fan deck was as long as a ruler, and almost three inches thick—colors galore—to GO! That same night we were going out to dinner together and planned to talk more about colors of interest. On the way to din-

ner, we started by eliminating colors we knew we didn’t want in order to narrow our choices down. Purples and dark blues were being eliminated just as we arrived at one of our favorite restaurants, Babbo’s in Chesterfield Valley. Just as we were getting seated, we looked at each other and both knew, without saying a word, we had found our first color inspiration. The walls in Babbo’s are a delicious, rich and Tuscan-inspired shade of orange. We thumbed through our new paint swatch fan deck and found Stirring Orange (SW6889) to be a near perfect match. John and I have a very large family and our times “alone together” are few and far between, so by bringing home the color of one of our favorite restaurant’s, we felt inspired to capture memories of our couple time and create that same warm, special feeling in our home. John painted our family room Stirring Orange that week. During the day and after school our family room is a hub of work and homework activity. It is also our family’s gathering place for movie nights. After the younger set of our nine children have been tucked into bed, and the older kids have headed to their rooms for the night, John and I often retreat to our wonderfully warm and cozy family continued >

room to read, watch a show on Netflix or just to talk together. The family room color exudes warmth by wrapping us up in good memories and comfort. Often one or the other will randomly say, “I just love this room.” When we sit in the family room we can see our dining room across the front foyer. We knew we needed to choose a color for the dining room that would complement the orange hue. John and I wanted to display our funky collection of professionally framed artist’s posters, from worldwide Pearl Jam concerts, in our dining room. Pearl Jam is our favorite band; we have attended many of their concerts collecting their brightly colored and eye-catching commemorative posters. We lined the posters up in a row and noticed there was one common color among them, a shade of turquoise. Flipping through the fan deck, we found Synergy (SW6938) to be the best match, since orange and blue are across from each other on the color wheel. Synergy-colored walls have made our Shaker-style cherry wood dining set really pop. The Synergy color also had the power to pull our very eclectic art collection together visually; fitting, since the essence of the word “synergy” embodies working together and cooperating. The dining room and family room are true reflections of us because the colors were chosen to represent, and rightfully display, things that collectively inspire us. These rooms flank the front hall and entrance to our home, so our guests enter through our screaming red double doors into an array of sensationally colorful rooms. Enter our home, you will be stirred and have no other choice but to synergize—both good things. Walking from our dining room or front hall into our kitchen, a bright shade of red called Fireworks (SW6867) is invigorating and the perfect backdrop for stainless steel appliances; nearly black, thick countertops; and warm wooden cabinetry. My favorite color is red and I knew that I wanted one of the rooms to be painted in vibrant splash of crimson. John and I agreed painting the kitchen walls Fireworks red would be the perfect way to wake up for morning coffee and also would be a stimulating surrounding color for creative cooking. When we desire a calmer, serene atmosphere, we can sit at the bar-height table in our Organic Green (SW6732) breakfast room off the kitchen and peer out the large picture window into our wooded backyard. Red and green are also complementary colors on the color wheel and these two shades really set each other off brilliantly, without looking like a year-round Christmas display. You can enter our living room from the breakfast room or the open hall from the kitchen. The color scheme in the living room was inspired by Goodnight Moon, a favorite children’s book of both John’s and mine. The walls are a sunny, happy shade of golden yellow called Brittlebush (SW6684). We wanted to create a whimsical storybook feel to the room so we painted the bricks of our floor-to-ceiling fireplace Organic Green and painted the wooden beam mantle and the semi-circle row of trim bricks in Fireworks red to draw in the colors of the kitchen and breakfast room, while

giving the room a Goodnight Moon, 1940s era feel to it. I like to think it would be a challenge for anyone to stand in our living room and not feel happy, surrounded by sunny walls and childhood memories. John and I are thrilled that we made the decision to surround ourselves with vibrant colors inspired by our memories, experiences and favorite things. We stepped outside our comfort zone and created a home even more comfortable because it portrays who we are and wraps us in things we love. We made the change for ourselves, but we have found that others enjoy the colors, too. Every visitor to our home immediately brings attention to or expresses admiration of the vibrant color scheme we have chosen to adorn our walls. The colors on the walls have become conversation pieces themselves. It is as if our guests can’t wait to walk further into our home and see what colors the other rooms have been painted. Our wildly bright, dramatic color scheme may not be for everyone. I appreciate a beautiful and peaceful condo we stayed in during a Gulf Shores, Ala., vacation; it was decorated in whites and neutral. It was crisp, fresh and clean feeling. It was great for vacation, yet in our home with nine kids and their friends coming in and out, I envision jelly fingerprints, lip gloss and dirt smudges on all of the walls. At this stage in my life, I wholeheartedly agree with artist, David Hockney, “I prefer living in COLOR.”

Old House in Hog Hollow The Making of a HOME Article Aimee Pellet | Photography John Babb

E

very house has a story that makes it a home. The Old House in Hog Hollow has a lifetime of stories nestled among the nearly one-foot-thick walls. Often referred to as The Queathem House, after the family who owned the home for the longest period, the structure is as impressive today as it would have been when it was constructed almost 150 years ago. Built around 1859 by the Ravens, a German family, the property encompassed 35 acres. When Jacob Ravens died in 1875, his widow Anna married the hired man, who was 35 years her junior. It leaves one to wonder if that union was considered scandalous at the time or simply a necessity to keep the farm business going. After a brief residency by the Schaeper family, Felix Queathem II and his wife, Pauline, purchased the home in 1898 and the Queathems would continue to live there until 1945. Queathem was a farmer whose father had emigrated from Belgium. They had a small orchard at the top of the hill near the house. Felix and his brother,

20

Chesterfield Lifestyle | September 2014

Henry, also owned orchards and farmland in the river bottoms, near the base of Hog Hollow Hill just past the St. Louis County Water Company. The house that they built is still standing today and houses a landscape supply business. By today’s standards, Felix and Pauline Queathem had a large family. Pauline gave birth to 11 children, eight of whom lived to adulthood. Three died as small children. Two of their tiny graves at St. John’s United Church of Christ Cemetery stand as a sad reminder of the realities of early life in the farming community of Lake, now part of Chesterfield. The current owner, Betty Brandt, operates the Old House in Hog Hollow, a successful and unique antique store within the walls of the old home. She purchased the property in 1993 after the widening of Olive Boulevard caused her to seek a new location because her building was set for demolition. What drew Betty to the home was the charm of the Queathem house. “I knew I wanted to move to another old

house, not a strip mall. The atmosphere here is just cozier and homier,” she says. When the owners of the Queathem House approached her about buying the property, she knew it was the right move.

And the City of Chesterfield agreed, as they knew it would mean the building would remain intact, since other potential buyers had plans to tear down the building. Not Betty. “It’s important to preserve the historic buildings here,” she says. Betty recalls many conversations with Lena Hoefer, my great-grandmother and lifetime resident of the area, who told her many stories about the prior inhabitants of the Queathem House, as she had grown up a short distance down the road in Brandt’s previous location in the Reising home at 14168 Olive Boulevard. It is interesting what stories stay in the mind of a child throughout their entire lives. Betty remembers Lena telling her about being friends with the Queathem girls--there were four born within five years of each other--when they were all young. They had a large family of eight children plus a nephew that lived with them and their dining room table sported long benches instead of chairs. Betty still

laughs as she recalls that Lena was invited to dinner with the Queathem family and, not having encountered bench seating before, proceeded to fall off the back of the bench straight onto the floor. Lena also conveyed a hard lesson of childhood to Betty. One of the Queathem girls had a school slate, the 19th century equivalent of an iPad, which Lena loved; material wants were certainly simpler then. She promised the young Queathem girl that she would do her homework for her in exchange for the slate. The deal was made and the slate was hers. However, that very day, on the way home from the Queathem house she dropped the tablet and it broke. She returned home and confessed to her mother what had just happened. Her mother told her, “Let this be a lesson to you. Don’t ever envy anybody’s things.” Some lessons never change. For those of us who think we are workaholics today, Betty shares this story. ters would load their horsedrawn buggy with fresh fruit from the orchard behind the house. They would leave at 10 p.m. and drive through the night to arrive at either the Soulard or Biddle Street market by early morning. They would sell their produce and then drive all the way back to Chesterfield that same day. The name Queathem is one that even long-time residents of Chesterfield have trouble pronouncing correctly. One time Betty used the pronunciation Quee’-them and Lena corrected her saying, “Honey, it’s Quay’-tem,” the correct Dutch pronunciation, as the TH is pronounced as a t. And its ever-changing history of spelling is even more confusing. Originally Van Quaethem, the family dropped the “Van” at some point and later Felix II swapped the “a” and the “e,” perhaps because of American’s tendencies to pronounce the second vowel in a vowel pair. However, on one 1909 plat map of the village of Lake, it is spelled Quathem (possibly an American variation of Quäthem). If you have never visited, you are in for a treat. Be sure to stop in to take a peek out of an upper window and visualize Olive Boulevard as a two-lane thoroughfare called Olive Street Road. Picture the rooms lit softly by candlelight as the home had no electricity in the Queathem era. Have a cappuccino with Betty and think about the work that would have gone into a making coffee if your house had no running water as was the case when the house was built. Close your eyes for a minute and try to imagine the house bustling with the noise and activities of eight children. Then ask yourself, “What will the story of my home be?” If you have memories, comments or suggestions for future topics, please email Aimee at aimee@thehistorychick.com.

Five Generations of Helping Make Houses into HOMES

Article Libby Mullen | Photography John Babb and HOME Advertising Inc.

P

aul and Theresa Dau are longtime residents of Chesterfield. They moved to Chesterfield in 1988 after building a home in the Forest Meadows subdivision. In 1992 they moved to their current residence in the Clarkson Woods Subdivision off Wilson Road. “We chose to move to Chesterfield back then because it was an up and coming area with great schools. The best things about Chesterfield are still that is an open community where it is easy to make friends and that there are so many places to dine and shop. There’s just so much to do and it is all close by,” says Paul Dau. Paul and Theresa have two grown children, Ryan and Cara, who were both raised in Chesterfield and graduated from Marquette High School in the Rockwood School District. Recently, the Daus became grandparents of baby Lydia, the daughter of Cara Dau-Allen. Paul is the president of Dau Home Furnishings, still a local 24

family-owned company that has been in business for 119 years and has been led by five generations of the Dau Family. Paul Dau’s great-grandfather, Ferdinand Dau, came to the United States from Germany in 1864. Ferdinand first settled in Kentucky where he learned skills in the carpentry trade. In 1890, Ferdinand moved to St. Louis to work for a streetcar company. Streetcar bodies were made of wood and Ferdinand put his carpentry skills to use in helping construct the cars. The workers of the streetcar company went on strike in 1893 and Ferdinand was forced to come up with another way to support his family. In the spirit of the philosophy that desperation breeds creativity, Ferdinand started collecting scrap wood and constructing curio cabinets and wall beds to sell. His handcrafted creations became so popular that he could not make enough of them fast

enough to meet demand or to pay the bills. This quandary caused him to seek things to buy and sell. This buy and sell concept was central to many of the small businesses popping up in St. Louis neighborhoods during that time. The first Dau Home Furnishings store sold mostly wooden household items called “casegoods” in the industry, and was located at 20th & Cass in St. Louis. Ferdinand lived above the store with his wife and their seven children. Though the steercar company strike finally ended in 1893, Ferdinand decided not to return and instead set out to grow his young business and continue raising his family above the store. As a common family tradition at the time, Ferdinand’s oldest son, Fred took over leadership of the store and grew the business. At that time commerce revolved around the neighborhood stores, and people didn’t venture far to makes purchases. Customers wanted to buy things from local stores and from families they knew. Fred managed three stores and a store/warehouse located in various St. Louis neighborhoods, including the Cherokee Street area, to reach more families. These locations thrived until the Great Depression. During the Depression, Dau worked with families to provide in-house payment plans that they could afford. There were some plans in place that required payments of only 50 cents per week. It was not uncommon to see a line, extending out of the store, comprised of loyal customers coming to submit their weekly payments. The Dau Family worked out plans that were within the budgets of customers, in a time when a handshake and simple payment agreement sealed the deal. In the late 1940s, after the war, Fred’s oldest son, Robert began running the family business. Robert’s vision was to consolidate the Dau stores into one location and to offer only the highest quality furnishings to their customers. Realizing that the West County suburban area was growing, Robert purchased land here in 1977. A short time after the West County store construction was completed in 1979, the Cherokee Street and Watson

Road locations were closed and Robert’s vision of one store offering high caliber products became a reality. Dau Home Furnishings has a very unique business model in that it is “design-driven.” “We like to say that our design service is complimentary with purchase,” says Paul. “What that means is that when a customer purchases furniture from Dau, professional design services are included-everything from choosing wall colors to accessorizing the home-rather than a salesperson helping you, you will have an experienced designer to help you beautify your home.” In addition to professional design services, Dau carries high caliber and customizable furniture lines. Dau is the exclusive area showroom for Stickley heirloom quality furniture. Many of the pieces that Dau carries can be customized to fit the exact needs of their customers. Upholstered pieces can be covered in a wide variety of fabrics and leathers. Designers at Dau will assist customers with the selection of contrasting fabrics to cover the cushions and backs of upholstered pieces. In addition, wood products such as dining room, bedroom and occasional pieces can be made-to-order in desired sizes and custom built from a selection of several different wood species. Customizing provides interesting options. Customers often find perfect pieces displayed in Dau’s showroom, but it is a great option to be able to customize pieces if needed. A large portion of Dau’s customers are residents of Chesterfield and they continue to shop at Dau because of the high quality of the products and the excellent services they receive. “It is all about building relationships. We want to build longterm relationships with our customers to help them create beautiful homes—we want to make sure our customers are satisfied,” says Paul. Dating back several decades Dau Furniture used the slogan, “What Dau Promises, Dau Always Does.” When customers walk into the store today, they still see this slogan on a sign near the entrance and immediately they can get a feel for the core values of Dau Home. Recently Dau is also emphasizing the benefits of purchasing high caliber heirloom quality furnishings, by pointing out that customers can “Love it Longer-Quality Lasts.” Dau Furniture delights in helping its customers make houses into comfortable, luxurious homes. Several of the Dau Family members are involved with the dayto-day business activities and providing their customers with continued >

The bottom of Paul Dau’s business card reads, “I can do anything through Him who gives me strength --(Phil 4:13).” “As business owners, sometimes we try to do everything on our own but it is though God where we really get our strength,” explains Paul. “God has had his hand on our business for five generations. Parting Thoughts

Chainsaws, Blueberries and Patio Parties Article Terri Arscott | Photography Provided

ave you ever experienced more beautiful weather in July than we had this year in Chesterfield? As far back as I can remember, St. Louis area summers have always been hot and sticky. I particularly recall the high temperature on July 4, 1998. The balmy heat felt especially uncomfortable to me, perhaps, because I was ten days away from becoming a mom for the second time. That evening, I plopped myself down in a lawn chair (as gracefully as I possibly could at that late stage of gestation) and prepared to watch the fireworks. I laughingly thought to myself, “There is no way that my overheated, sweaty and maternally round self is going to get out of this chair without help!” Fast forward sixteen years later to July 4, 2014. It was beautifully bug-free and delightfully breezy with only a hint of humidity in the air. The gift of unexpectedly mild summer weather certainly made up for being literally snowed in this past winter. Hopefully Mother Nature will be as kind this winter as she has been during this glorious summer. Although the grass is not as green or as fast-growing as it was in May, there is still plenty to do around the yards of our homes. My family and I live on a quiet street in Chesterfield and the houses here have larger-than-average yards. Our neighborhood shares a collective love for maintaining the yards of the homes within it. Let me elaborate. The men on our street are notorious for using chainsaws, tractors and any other yard tool that is loud

and big! They all help each other to saw fallen trees after storms, to trim dead branches off each other’s trees, and to mow the lawns of vacationing neighbors during their trips. In addition to wielding and riding their various nature-grooming noisemakers, this is the time of year the guys traditionally pool funds and rent a large, gas-powered yard aerator for the day. Each one gets a turn with this monster-sized machine to “play” in his yard one last time for the summer. As summer is coming to a close, take some time to “play” in your yard and also to spend time outdoors exploring Chesterfield. Perhaps you will choose to visit one or more of our many parks, to attend outdoor sporting events at our fine area high schools, or to dine at our local restaurants that offer outdoor seating. Might I also suggest that you savor the season by taking advantage of fresh fruit offerings and maybe even freeze a few pounds of summer blueberries to enjoy later? I think we can all agree that nothing tastes better than a piping hot stack of fresh blueberry pancakes, on a chilly winter morning. Mmmmmm... In a few months, as the weather becomes colder, we will all naturally retreat to the indoor comfort of our homes. For now, taking brisk walks together on these beautiful Chesterfield evenings (when it isn’t pouring buckets of rain) or spending time with family and friends outside on your deck or patio would both be fantastic and memorable ways to participate in summer’s finale.
