Lifestyle Letter

Welcome to our home issue.

NOVEMBER 2015 publisher Steven Schowengerdt

I

t goes without question, there's no other place I'd rather be than home. Yet, when I'm at home I can't help but notice all the improvements I want to make -- paint accent walls, rearrange furniture, add décor, replace light fixtures, the list goes on. Our homes are a reflection of us. The styles we choose can be timeless, chic, contemporary, modern or traditional. The thing I love most about every home, however, is that it is unique. In this issue we look at all areas of the home, from roofing and renovations to decorating and rehabilitation. If you're in need of a roofing repair, call Shamrock Roofing. This team of dedicated professionals have an average of 20 years experience in the roofing industry and can help with repairs, renovations and replacements. Thinking of redoing your kitchen? Locally-owned Granite Transformations utilizes carefully crafted and engineered stone that's installed on top of existing countertops, making it a demolition-free process. In our Giving Back section, you'll learn how Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona's Reconstruct Program is helping Chandler residents get their homes back through a unique housing program. You'll meet one Chandler woman who is truly grateful for the gift she received.

Chandler's 2nd Annual Trashion Fashion Show hits the runway on November 14. At least 75 percent of a garment must be made from recyclable or reused materials and participants must be a resident of Chandler or a student in Chandler. Chandler's Recycling Specialist Traci Conaway says, "We thought this would be a unique way to get people thinking differently about waste. PEIXOTO COFFEE

11 West Boston Street, Suite 6 Chandler AZ, 85225 480.275.2843 PeixotoCoffee.com 14

Chandler Lifestyle | November 2015

eixoto Coffee isn’t another coffee spot with just any story. Julia Peixoto Peters, co-owner, is from four generations of coffee growers with 600 acres of farmland in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Julia came to Arizona to study law at University of Arizona. She got her law degree, married, had two children and moved to Chandler five years ago. She is a lawyer but her passion to carry on the family legacy led her and her husband, Jeff Peters, to trade in their professions for their passion and open Peixoto (pronounced pay-sho-tow) Coffee this past January in historic Downtown Chandler. For over 100 years her family has been selling green Arabica beans commercially. Most coffee buyers order coffee from importers but not these two, they are so particular and passionate about producing the finest coffee for their customers they fly back to Brazil and personally select the beans for their coffee lounge. From crop to cup, Julia and Jeff are redefining coffee.

In fact, Jeff recently switched careers from being an aerospace engineer for 15 years to become the CFO and Roaster at Peixoto Coffee. Roasting small batches of coffee only takes about 12 minutes. “We roast our coffees light to medium roast because we believe lighter roast brings out the natural flavors of the coffee and doesn’t mask the flavors,” says Julia. The lounge isn’t fancy, more of an industrial, rustic farm motif that is warm and inviting making it a great place to relax with a hot or cold coffee and visit with friends or catch up on email. All the décor was done by this energetic couple. Supporting local bakeries and other local businesses is part of their business plan. Fresh baked goods are brought in daily. On weekends, different chefs prepare breakfast items including Belgium waffles, short order pancakes and a Brazilian breakfast.

FROM CROP TO CUP, JULIA AND JEFF ARE REDEFINING COFFEE.

A COFFEE UNLIKE OTHERS

I love lattes, so I ordered a white chocolate latte during my visit which was made with real chocolate and Espresso. It was definitely the smoothest and tastiest latte I’ve ever had. The chocolate gave it a sweet taste without being too sugary. And, there was no bitter aftertaste. Now, I consider myself a true coffee lover – in fact, my dog’s names are Pumpkin Latte and Java Beane, so you can see I take my coffee seriously! I also sampled the cold flight which is four small servings of cold beverages - a Nitro brew, a cold brew, lemongrass lemonade, and cascara. The cascara is coffee tea that is brewed from the coffee cherry. I really enjoyed the lemongrass lemonade and cascara which I combined to make a delicious Arnold Palmer! The Nitro cold brew was new for me. Julia says, “That’s what you get when you put a rocket scientist behind the coffee bar.” After sampling the Peixoto brew, I agree with Julia, it is “all about the coffee!” Her father, Jose Augusto Peixoto, can be very proud his daughter is continuing the family legacy and has introduced his wonderful coffee to Chandler.

Shamrock Roofing Professionals Provide Quality Services ROOF REPAIRS, MAINTENANCE AND RENOVATIONS ARTICLE JACKIE BINSFELD | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

F

inding the perfect home takes an enormous amount of time and energy, so it makes sense that you would want to ensure that it is protected. James DeVore of Shamrock Roofing Services explains that the roof does just that: “The roof protects everything below, not only the house and the things within but the people.” At Shamrock Roofing, the team strives to provide their customers with quality roofing services to protect both homes and residents.

“We will honestly evaluate a roof based on the big picture and what the customer needs,” DeVore affirms. “Shamrock Roofing Services, LLC will offer a repair whenever it is available allowing customers to plan for larger renovations when a roof reaches the end of its life.” This honesty and genuine interest in helping residents have a well-structured roof allows Shamrock Roofing to build strong and trusting relationships with their customers.

STRONG FOUNDATION

SERVICES

Shamrock Roofing Services, LLC was started in 2008 by James DeVore, who has been in the roofing business for over 30 years. DeVore brought together a team of seasoned roofing professionals explaining, “Our crew foremen have a minimum of 17 years of experience with an average of over 20 years.” Not only does Shamrock Roofing focus on enlisting quality employees, but they also seek to bring that high level of quality to their customers.

Roof repairs and renovations can seem extremely daunting. Shamrock Roofing’s reputation of honesty allows residents in need of roofing services to feel at ease. With their evaluations, Shamrock Roofing’s foremen can offer customers a variety of services. DeVore reveals that the most popular services of Shamrock Roofing are the Concrete Tile Refelt, Shingle Roof Replacement and Flat Roof Coating. Shamrock also performs small repairs such as replacing one to two broken tiles or lifted shingles.

16

Chandler Lifestyle | November 2015

When choosing the perfect roof style, you need to consider several different options. Shamrock Roofing offers asphalt shingles, concrete tiles and flat roof styles. If you decide that a flat roof is right for your home, Shamrock provides a variety of styles including foam, rolled and walk decks. “The most popular roofing type in Arizona is concrete tile,” DeVore remarks. MAINTAINING YOUR ROOF

Once you have your beautiful roof, you will want to ensure that it remains in top condition. To do so, DeVore suggests having regular maintenance checks on your roof. “Basic maintenance is an affordable way to extend the life of a roof. A professional should inspect a roof every couple of years. Regular inspections can help to keep up with roof cleaning to remove debris that can block water flow allowing it to deteriorate the roofing materials,” he explains. Although flat roofs can be a great asset to a home, they are more susceptible to damage. DeVore cautions, “Flat roofs are especially important to maintain because they are not as visible and are easily forgotten.” Tile roofs are a popular option, but they too require regular maintenance. “Tile roofs should have the tiles checked for cracks, breaks and slipping which leaves the felt beneath vulnerable to damage,” DeVore warns.

Finally, shingle roofs can give homes a classic feel but DeVore explains that they can need to have pipes and vents resealed where they penetrate the roof. AT YOUR SERVICE

Shamrock Roofing provides their customers with roofing care not only in their time of need but also before any roofing issues may occur. “Shamrock Roofing Services offers free annual inspections to help homeowners keep up with regular maintenance and evaluate the overall condition of each roof before an emergency,” shares DeVore. This truly gives customers the peace of mind they need when faced with making decisions on the part of their home that provides the most protection. NEWLY-REMODELED SCOTTSDALE PLAZA RESORT SAYS

Home for the Holidays ’ ‘

18

Chandler Lifestyle | November 2015

Perfect Spot for Out-of-Town Guests ARTICLE ALISON STANTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

B

elieve it or not, the holidays are just around the corner. Along with the inevitable reappearance of decorative Santas and Menorahs, Christmas trees and toys-a-plenty, chances are good at least one relative will appear at the door, ready for some yuletide cheer. While readying the guest room and entertaining Aunt Sally and Uncle Bob at your home is always an option, you could also start a new holiday tradition this year by encouraging your guests to stay at the newly-renovated Scottsdale Plaza Resort. RESORT HISTORY

The Scottsdale Plaza Resort first opened nearly four decades ago, says Sheryl Bettencourt, director of marketing. The resort, which sits on 40 lovely landscaped acres in the shadow of Camelback Mountain, features 404 guest rooms, including 180 elegant suites. In addition to being the only independently owned and operated resort in the Valley, Bettencourt says some of the employees have worked there almost since the beginning. “Because of this we have so many long standing relationships with returning guests, and we go out of our way to treat everyone like one of the family,” she says. The Scottsdale Plaza Resort is an ideal place for holiday guests to stay, Bettencourt says, because the resort’s five categories of room styles means there is something for every family. This is especially true for the resort’s Suites—the Patio, Bi-Level and Villas all have wet bars, in-room refrigerators and separate living rooms, she says. Many even have beehive fireplaces to help add to the ambiance of a cozy winter retreat. “It’s a home away from home at holiday times,” she says. NEWLY RENOVATED

The recently-completed renovations focused on the standard category of rooms, Bettencourt says. They included replacing bathtubs with glass walled showers and putting in new flooring by Heritage Interiors throughout the vanity and shower areas. The rooms now feature new lighting, and the closet and vanity bathroom areas were both expanded to offer guests more square footage, Bettencourt says, along with updated plumbing fixtures by Kohler. The renovation also included adding desks by Living Spaces and new accent chairs for the rooms’ seating areas, as well as framed and lighted vanity mirrors by Electric Mirrors. The eye-catching granite on the wet bars and vanities is from Arizona Tile, Bettencourt says, and the brushed nickel hardware in the rooms was made by Ferguson. To add to the usable space of the rooms, televisions are now mounted on the walls, and the standard category rooms now feature in-room refrigerators. If guests are not part of the holiday game plan, The Scottsdale Plaza Resort is a great choice for Valley families who want to take a “staycation” during the hustle and bustle of the season. HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

(CONTINUED)

Instead of rushing back home after a long day of holiday shopping, local families can book a room at The Scottsdale Plaza Resort and enjoy relaxing together. Kids will be sure to get a kick out of the Turkish cotton robes, which are included in all guest rooms and suites, and will enjoy hanging out with mom and dad as everyone enjoys an in-room movie.

For people who have enjoyed a bit too many holiday cookies and egg nog, the resort’s tennis courts, fitness center and putting green will give them the opportunity to burn off those extra calories while engaging in some good natured competition. Once everyone is hungry again, Bettencourt says, people can head over to Remington’s for a special holiday dinner. From its beautifully-appointed rooms, lovely views of Camelback and Mummy Mountains and amenities galore to its accommodating staff and gorgeous holiday decorations, The Scottsdale Plaza Resort offers a welcoming sanctuary from the busyness of the upcoming season.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY, FESTIVE

To help ring in the holiday season, Bettencourt says the resort is always extensively decorated with beautiful trees and plenty of festive décor, including lights and floral arrangements that will delight both kids and adults. “Floral Designs by Jeremiah has been creating our holiday décor for over 25 years,” she says. The resort also offers plenty of activities for local families and their visiting relatives to enjoy. Guests can use one of the resort’s five outdoor heated and sparkling pools as well as enjoy some serious pampering time at the on-site salon and day spa.

The Scottsdale Plaza Resort is located at 7200 N. Scottsdale Rd., in Scottsdale. For more information, visit ScottsdalePlaza.com.

Transformations KITCHEN AND BATHROOM RENOVATIONS MADE EASY

ARTICLE AMY AGUIRRE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Chandler Lifestyle | November 2015

K

itchens are a very important and functional room in a home. It is where people can gather and share a sense of community. Countertops are an essential aspect and the focal point of the kitchen. One type of countertop that is very popular is granite. Granite countertops can transform any dull kitchen into a kitchen of luxury. But is the renovation and maintenance worth it? Home renovations can be a stressful process. Renovations are time consuming, expensive and can leave your home in a mess for weeks or even worse, months. Granite Transformations, a worldwide franchise that specializes in stone and glass countertops, aims to make the home renovation process easier, affordable and timely.

ENGINEERED GRANITE

Unlike natural granite, Granite Transformations’ product is an engineered granite that requires less upkeep. Their product is “better than granite in the fact that there is no maintenance, because it is permanently sealed and it comes with a lifetime warranty,” says Roy Anderson, owner of Granite Transformations in Phoenix. Granite Transformations has a very unique and convenient countertop installation process. They take quarter-inch thick slabs of engineered stone and place it directly on top of the existing countertops, meaning there is no demolition involved, according to Anderson. Their demolition-free installation enables the countertops to be installed more quickly and allows the homeowner to skip the demolition mess entirely. In most cases the entire countertop installation can take just one day. CONTINUED >

GRANITE TRANSFORMATIONS (CONTINUED)

ECO-FRIENDLY

Granite Transformations not only aims to make the renovation process easier for the homeowner, but they also seek to have a positive influence on the environment. They offer glass countertops made from recycled glass, according to Anderson. Their countertop installations are also eco-friendly, since the countertops are placed directly over the old counter. The demolition-free installation saves time and generates less waste. “We don’t have to tear out the old countertops and throw them in the landfill, we just keep them on the existing counter,” says Anderson. INSTALLATION MADE EASY

Granite Transformations offers free in-home consultations to help homeowners determine the best product and color for their home’s interior. During the consultation, color samples will be provided, allowing the homeowner to test out different colors in the room they are remodeling.

24

Chandler Lifestyle | November 2015

There are a wide variety of color options including 25 different granite and quartz product colors. Also during the consultation, measurements will be taken and pricing will be discussed. After the consultation, Granite Transformations will schedule a template date. They will take a template of the existing countertops and transport it to the factory. While at the factory they will cut the product so that it measures up to the template, according to Anderson. After the template stage, the countertops are ready for installation. Granite Transformation’s products can be used in kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces and vanities. They also offer glass countertops, mosaic tile backsplashes and cabinet refacing. Home renovations can be a daunting task, but Granite Transformations can help make the process a little less overwhelming. The Phoenix based Granite Transformations serves the east and south Valley. It Takes a Village HABITAT FOR HUMANITY CENTRAL ARIZONA IS RECONSTRUCTING HOMES IN CHANDLER ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

sabel Duran’s Chandler home of 42 years was falling apart at the seams. There was no heating or cooling, dirt was coming through the rotten floorboards in the bedroom and she wasn’t able to sell it for a good price. Duran was in a difficult situation because she couldn’t afford the repairs or a down payment for a new place. She considered locking up and leaving a home she owned free and clear. Today, less than two years later Duran, 71, has a brand new three bedroom, two bath home that sits in the same location that her dilapidated house once sat. This was made possible thanks to Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona’s (HFHCAZ) Reconstruct Program that’s geared towards people who own property. “I knew that this was my only way out and I was hoping and praying that they would come through and they did,” says Duran. “It was the best news I ever got.” It takes a village to build a HFHCAZ home. The City of Chandler funded a large portion of the rebuild, sponsors such as Whirlpool donated a new stove, microwave and refrigerator and teams of volunteers helped with the actual building. However, Duran was an important and active participant in the process as well.

“I asked them to please make it wheelchair accessible, because my arthritis makes it difficult to get around and both of my ankles have been fractured," she says. "The whole house is wheelchair accessible with a walk in shower so I don’t have to climb over the tub. They helped us with each step we took. They did everything possible to accommodate my needs.” SWEAT EQUITY

It took six months from the time Duran began the paperwork to demolition day. The application process took about a month and a half and during that time HFHCAZ assessed if she qualified and what she could afford on a fixed income. Qualifying families pay for their home through a no-profit mortgage loan and sweat equity. “We needed 100 volunteer hours before we started to build. It was very enlightening because I never thought that I could do it,” says Duran. “I could have up to three people help me make those hours. My daughter Victoria would go with me every time.” The first day Duran volunteered at the ReStores she remembers taking apart hardware for blinds. Typically she worked in the office and was the paper shredder. Her daughter worked in the CONTINUED >

store sorting electronics, shelving and cleaning. Families can also volunteer at HFHCAZ home building sites if they prefer. “The time went by quickly and we enjoyed it,” says Duran. Two other family members lent their hands during the building phase and Victoria volunteered beyond the required hours by helping a neighbor with their HFHCAZ rebuild. “They were very efficient,” says Duran. “I have never seen anything like this. All of the group, the team leaders, the employees, they were beautiful. In fact we still talk to them.” Another requirement of the program is education. New home owners attend an orientation before beginning the mortgage application and they also take a series of classes. Duran enjoyed the classes that taught her how to manage her budget on a fixed income and how to make her mortgage payment and still have money left at the end of the month. A GREAT AMBASSADOR

“I like to tell people how to get into the program,” says Duran. While she may have been the first in her neighborhood to have her home rebuilt by HFHCAZ, she certainly wasn’t the last. “Our neighbor across the street had her house rebuilt and she’s living in it already," says Duran. "Another house two houses down will be built this winter. It’s the third house on this block."

The day Duran and her daughter picked up the keys to her new home is a treasured milestone. She appreciated the ceremony HFHCAZ staffers had for her and she also welcomed the opportunity to talk with a new HFHCAZ candidate. “We were leaving and she walked up to the car and asked how to get started because she was going to apply. We gave her a short version and told her not to give up. It will happen. She said, ‘Thank you so much, I was scared and not sure what to do.’ I told her not to be scared, they are very helpful and you’re not alone. They are wonderful people.” Duran has lived in her new house for a year and a half and says it’s beautiful and well made. Her daughter and two children moved in to help take care of her because her doctors didn’t want her to live alone due to health issues. “I thank God that I could hang in there and get my house," she says. "And I’m proud of my daughter, she has some health issues too and we will be taking care of each other as long as God lets us. I’m happy. I’m very happy!” Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona is currently accepting applications for their Reconstruct Program. Parting Thoughts

Easy Home Design Tips WORDS DENA THOMAS PHOTOGRAPHY BRIDGETTE MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY

It

has always been my passion in life to decorate homes - not for just anyone, but for those who think designing a home can be expensive. It all started when I wanted to decorate my new 3,600-square-foot home in Plano, TX. Coming from a very modest 1,600-square-foot home, it was quite intimidating for me. I didn't know much about decorating at the time, but I knew what I wanted and how I wanted it to look. At first I tried hiring an interior designer, but after the numbers kept adding up, I found it to be far outside of my financial comfort zone. At this point, I decided that it was time to educate myself, so I started taking classes, reading magazines, design books, and going through model homes. Once I finally created my first real space, it was then that I realized, “Hey! I've got a knack for this.” As a result of creating my own space, and listing our home for sale, I was approached by a realtor to stage homes Again, not knowing the staging business but understanding it was like decorating a home with minimal pieces, I began doing my due diligence and started a staging business. It's now 22 years later and I have a thriving career, which has completely exceeded all my expectations. I practice my skills in the Chandler area with clients in southern California as well. My philosophy has always been to create a timeless and practical design which is personalized for each client. Hiring an interior designer/decorator doesn't have to break the bank. Knowing where to shop, while utilizing my designer benefits, allows me to pass on all 34

my financial savings. I listen to my client’s needs and budgets to create that timeless and practical design in which I pride my business. Here are a few tips and tricks I use when I’m designing a space: 1. Find one inspirational piece and work around it. 2. When accessorizing, try to use larger pieces in lieu of smaller ones to fill the space. 3. Mix and match woods and textiles to create a more unique focal point. 4. Always use colorful accent rugs in bathrooms instead of generic bath rugs. 5. Use dimmers on light switches to enhance the ambiance. 6. It's ok to mix and match your tables in the family room or bedroom for more texture and interest. 7. Mix your dining chairs with solid and pattern textiles. It's great when you can choose different captain chairs at each end of the table. 8. I like to layer my pillows on the couch, love seat and chairs. Pick out different fabrics which coordinate with colors, prints and patterns. 9. Pick your paint colors last and be sure to paint a sample on a large white poster board so you can move it around in different places of the room. 10. Print off a picture of your room or space and carry it with you when trying to determine furniture and appropriate accessories along with measurements. Bring swatches of fabrics, paint or wood tones that you are working with. Most people tend to decorate according to a current trend. Like anything in life, use the trend in moderation, and try to incorporate a more timeless approach to allow for a more versatile and practical design.
