Explore the beauty of Arizona

e’re fortunate to live in the magnificent Southwest where we can spend time outdoors nearly every single day. During the spring, and even as the hot summer months are approaching, we can take advantage of the cool mornings and the mild evenings for a stroll through the park, a hike or bike ride. Now is the perfect time to experience the Sonoran Desert in full bloom.

This month we’re focused on our natural surroundings. From gardening and hiking to fishing and wildlife, this issue is packed with outdoor activities the whole family can enjoy. At Veteran’s Oasis Park and Environmental Education Center, residents can fish in the lake, hike trails, picnic under the pavilions, and learn about planting, birding and outdoorsmanship. Kids can even participate in nature camps, host birthday parties and interact with wildlife. Turning compost into soil for gardening and farming is the mission behind Recycled City, a Phoenix-based organization that provides composting services for commercial and residential use across the Valley. In an effort to keep the earth sustainable, those who participate in the composting program can transform trash and food waste into soil which can be kept or donated to local farms and community gardens. If you want to experience true natural beauty, head over to the Desert Botanical Garden. The 140-acre stunning outdoor display of desert plants will intrigue even the smallest visitors. Featuring interactive exhibits, tours, activities, classes and events, now is the perfect time to plan a visit. Our Hot Spot this month features simple, fresh and local ingredients. At GRAZ Kitchen Fresh, owner Marcus Gonzales shares his inspiration behind the delicious morning and afternoon sandwiches, fresh juice blends, healthy salads and side dishes available at this Chandler restaurant.

Water & Woods

Enjoy hiking, fishing and wildlife at Veteran’s Oasis Park and Environmental Education Center

ARTICLE JACKIE BINSFELD | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

W

ho would have thought that an empty lot of land would be transformed into an integral part of a city? But that is exactly what happened in Chandler with the Veteran’s Oasis Park and Environmental Education Center. Ariane Francis, who oversees the Center and facilitates programs throughout the park, shares insight on how the park came to be and the many amazing programs the Center provides. AN UNEXPECTED BEGINNING

Several years ago, the city of Chandler was looking for a way to store the city’s reclaimed water. Using an empty property owned by the City of Chandler and occupied now by the Municipal Utilities Department, Police Department (with a station located at the park), and Recreation Division, the city created a park with storage basins to solve this problem. After breaking ground in 2006, it took just two years for the city to gain their beloved park. Francis, who took on her role as overseer four years ago, explains that working at the park and Center brings her a new adventure each day. Along with her staff of five, Francis plans different programs and events as well as organizes learning experiences such as field trips and classes. Having worked with recreation centers in Chandler over the past 12 years, Francis explains that she has found a “passion turned into a career.” With valuable insight, Francis is able to create the best experience possible for the park’s guests. A PLACE TO LOVE AND LEARN FROM

With 113 acres, a beautiful lake, miles of hiking trails, tranquil pavilions, and much more, the park attracts many people, as well as a large amount of wildlife. Guests can try to reel in a big catch at the lake or enjoy hiking the 4.5 miles of trails. Those who prefer relaxing strolls can take the self-guided solar tour. Guests can simply walk around the lake which is surrounded by podiums informing them about the solar system. Reservable pavilions are available for guests to spend a leisurely afternoon. The park also hosts an outdoor 16

amphitheater where visitors can enjoy concerts and shows. The Environmental Education Center is home to a variety of learning opportunities. The Center’s classes focus on improving both the visitors’ well-being and their knowledge of the environment that they are in. Visitors can take classes on yoga, plants, animals and minerals. Francis herself has enjoyed bringing her daughter to the center’s “Meet the Creatures” class, where participants can interact with local animals.

Visitors also have the opportunity to go on field trips coordinated by the Center, an offering that has only been around for about a year. These excursions allow participants to engage in a non-traditional learning experience. Instead of just reading about Arizona’s rocks and minerals, they can actually take part in a digging excursion. Schools also have the opportunity to participate in field trips to the Center. The Center allows public, charter and home-schooled students to take a break from their usual learning environment and have the chance to take part in a hands-on experience. Francis remarks that it is “amazing to see the kids excited for learning and [getting the chance to be] scientists.” FUN FOR ALL

The park and Center provide an environment that encourages learning for all ages. The park is located at 4050 E. Chandler Heights Rd. in Chandler. To learn more, visit ChandlerAZ.gov or call (480) 7822890 for more information. April 2016 | Chandler Lifestyle

DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN OFFERS WIDE VARIETY OF CLASSES FOR KIDS AND ADULTS ARTICLE ALISON STANTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

S

ince the Desert Botanical Garden first opened in 1939, it has inspired both locals and visitors with its beautiful exhibits. In addition to visiting the 55 acres that are under cultivation and viewing some of the 50,000-plus plant displays that call the Phoenix location home, the Desert Botanical Garden offers a huge variety of outdoor-themed classes for kids and adults. Luana Vargas, program director, adult education, says Desert Botanical Garden has both formal and informal lifelong learning programs that are perfect for those with a green thumb, as well those who wish to discover more about the many fascinating critters and creatures who live there. “We offer about 500 programs a year and in 2015 we had approximately 25,000 students—both children and adults—who attended our programs,” Vargas says, adding that when it comes to fun and educational classes, Desert Botanical Garden truly has it all. “We have classes for families and kids and even for infants and toddlers—our Baby Boojums program was a hit this winter. And we do have programs designed specifically for adults including gardening, art, photography and birding classes.” The following is just a small sampling of the classes that are offered at Desert Botanical Garden:

Chandler Lifestyle | April 2016

SUMMER FOR KIDS SUMMER CAMPS CAMPS FOR KIDS For parents who are looking for great ways to keep their kids happily occupied during summer break, Desert Botanical Gardens offers drop-off camps that offer a terrific way to explore the Sonoran Desert. Vargas says the different camp programs are designed for kids ranging from 5-12 years, and include hands-on experiences that are fun and interactive. For example, Pollination Pals, which runs from June 6-10, teaches kids about the diversity of the Sonoran Desert. The hands-on camp allows kids to discover the fascinating world of bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, bats and the plants that depend on them.

GIRL SCOUTS PROGRAM From October through May, Vargas says the Desert Botanical Garden hosts a Girl Scouts program that is open to Daisies, Brownies and Juniors. For example, in the Water Wizards class, scouts will learn about the amazing ways that desert plants adapt to help them collect, contain and conserve water. The Scouts will investigate these characteristics as they think about a world inspired by desert plants that starts in their very own garden. CONTINUED >

FAMILY CLASSES

FAMILY CLASSES

The whole family can create meaningful memories together, Vargas says, by attending one of the Garden’s desert exploration programs. “Kids, parents, and grandparents alike will leave with a shared enthusiasm for the plants and animals around us,” she says, adding that these programs are designed for families with children ages 5 to 12, although children under 17 are welcome. One of the many examples will take place on May 14, when kids and adults can sign up together for the Desert Book Club— Butterflies and Birds event. After walking through the Garden, local children’s author Natalie Gagnon will read to the class from her latest books that describe monarch butterflies and Gambel’s quail. LANDSCAPING AND GARDENING

LANDSCAPING AND GARDENING

People who want to start a garden but are unsure if a ground-level or raised bed is the way to go can learn more about both options at the Raised Bed Gardening class on April 3. The class will cover the differences of the two types of gardens, including the pros and cons of each. Attendees will also learn about the different types of construction materials, designs and soil mixes that go into a raised bed.

BIRDING CLASSES

BIRDING CLASSES

A variety of birds call the Desert Botanical Garden home. People can learn about some of the many species through different classes devoted to quail, hummingbirds and more. Gaskill will teach a class on May 21 that is devoted to the small and adorable birds that live at the Garden. Appropriately named Cute Little Guys, people will learn about wrens, gnatcatchers and verdins. To get a good view of these small and lively birds, students are encouraged to bring binoculars. On June 8 and 11, Tom Gaskill will teach Arizona’s Owls, a class that introduces people to Arizona’s most common owl species. After learning about their behavior, preferred habits and easily-identified calls, participants will take a field trip to a local burrowing owl sanctuary.

Chandler ’s SECRET SANDWICHES

GRAZ Kitchen Fresh brings local ingredients to create simple, flavorful dishes

ife lessons brought GRAZ Kitchen Fresh owner and chef, Marcus Gonzales, to where he is today. The fire in him began to fuel as he grew up, while watching his Nana cook from scratch in the kitchen every day. This continued during his time in the Marine Corps and later as an intern in a Scottsdale restaurant. These experiences are where Gonzales learned the techniques and honed in on the skills that bring a distinct flair to his own kitchen, at Chandler’s best kept secret sandwich shop. “I wanted this concept to be simple, fresh and from the heart,” says a humble Gonzales as he looked on to his team working meticulously behind the counter.

Menu Inspiration MENU INSPIRATION

As you read the menu at GRAZ, bits and pieces of his story come to life. Take for instance the Zues on Fire (and yes, that is how they spell it at GRAZ). Gonzales’ father-in-law is from Greece and has had a strong influence on his life. When eating the grilled cheese sandwich you can imagine this person that he admires. Biting into the crunchy sourdough, you immediately taste a culmination of Mediteranean flavors. The red onion, kale and cabbage slaw and red wine vinaigrette all bring a spicy and tangy flavor to the forefront. This is evened out with a zesty Greek feta spread and crisp cucumber. Between these flavors is a generous amount of sliced chicken. To finish the sandwich, a layer of Havarti is added and is 22

pressed to lock in the flavor. The same goes for “The Earl” and the “Mr. English” sandwiches; all influenced from different people in Gonzales’ life. “My concept came to me overnight. I wanted a menu of things that I liked to eat and what I thought [the residents of] Chandler would enjoy eating. The items come from inspiration during life’s journey, so the menu is continuously changing,” Gonzales says. Aside from a hearty lunch you can enjoy at GRAZ, let’s not forget the most important meal of the day, as there are also plenty of menu options for breakfast. If you prefer breakfast on the light side, there are daily pastries (even the occasional cruffin), fresh

When you grab the sandwich’s pillowy bread to take the first bite, you already know your morning is made. Fresh spinach, tomatoes, soft eggs and melted Havarti are found inside the Jonathan Robins Bakery brioche bun. Adding a depth of flavor is an herb aioli, goat cheese spread and GRAZ’s own line of Desert Blossom honey. GRAZ KITCHEN FRESH

The GRAZ raw and unfiltered honey came about through a partnership with local beekeeper, Crocket Honey Co. This honey can be found in several items on the menu, including a staple side item, the Kale Slaw. If you want a side with your sandwich or a light afternoon snack, the Kale Slaw is highly recommended. While a vinegar-based slaw, the flavor is toned down with the addition of the GRAZ honey. The honey and vinegar dressing coat the chopped kale and cabbage. Mixed with Parmesean, green onions and feta cheese, there is a faint bite to the honey slaw that has you go back for more. Along with local honey, bread and coffee, Gonzales has partnered with local farmers Harvest 480 and Rhiba Farms to provide fresh produce for menu items. All spreads, dressings, and pesto are also made in house. GRAZ has perfected the sandwich game, but keep a look out for fresh cookies being made daily including a Garbage cookie with chocolate chunks, crunchy pretzels and salty potato chips. All sandwiches can be made into a wrap, and several salad options are also available. GRAZ has a seating area in the restaurant for both breakfast and lunch, while also providing call ahead orders and curbside pickup. Gonzales and his team have the ability to host private dinners in their restaurant or on-site catering. You can find them on the corner of Arizona Ave. and Pecos Rd. They are open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

RECYCLED CITY Recycling waste into soil for gardening and farming

MAKES COMPOSTING EASY ARTICLE AMY AGUIRRE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

T

here is a growing appreciation for all things local. From locally-grown food to homemade goods, investing in your community is important and beneficial. There are many different ways to contribute including buying local, but there is also another way, and it begins with your trash and food waste, it is called composting. Composting is a recycling method that takes old food scraps and waste and transforms it into soil that can be used for gardening and farming. JD Hill, co-founder of Recycled City, a Phoenix-based compost service company, explained the composting process, “anything natural, that was once alive, decomposes after it dies. Microorganisms consume and recycle the components so they can be reused by plants.” 26

Chandler Lifestyle | April 2016

The art of composting not only changes the way one disposes of their garbage, but it also helps in creating healthy soil that is used in farmland CONTINUED > and gardens to grow nutritious local produce.

Recycled City will be participating in Eastmark AwesomeFest on Saturday, April 9 from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Eastmark Visitor and Community Center, located at 10100 E Ray Rd. in Mesa. AwesomeFest is an evening of awe, inspiration and fun for all ages with interactive experiences, national arts, musical acts and food from local eateries. Learn more at www.eastmark.com.

“Our soils are disappearing due to conventional farming. Composting is one of the best ways we can fix this problem. Creating more farmland can help the community grow more local produce.”

Recycled City aims to make composting easy for Phoenix locals. Residents that use Recycled City receive a bin and throughout the week fill the bin with compostable items, anything from banana peels to paper plates, and then Recycled City picks up the bin once a week. “We pick up food waste from homes and restaurants, and haul it to a farm on 9th Ave. and Baseline. Here we form large piles of food waste and wood chips with a tractor. The piles are watered and turned every week, and in four months we have finished compost,” says Hill. When the compost is finished, Recycled City either returns the soil to customers, donates it or uses it to grow food in backyards and small local farms. Hill stresses the importance of investing in local farms. He explained that his favorite aspect of his work with composting is the opportunity to grow farmland in Phoenix. He also stressed that this is one of the main reasons people should compost. “Our soils are disappearing due to conventional farming. Composting is one of the best ways we can fix this problem.” Creating more farmland can help the community grow more local produce," he says. Chad and Erin Romanoff, owners of The Uprooted Kitchen mobile food truck and Chandler residents, use organic and fresh local produce frequently. The Uprooted Kitchen’s menu contains vegetarian options and is focused around certified organic produce, much of which is grown locally at The Farm at Agritopia. The couple decided to begin composting due to the amount of waste generated from owning and operating their food truck. From the food waste to utensils, they knew there was a better option to dispose of these items. “In our minds composting just makes sense,” says Chad. "Food comes from the earth, it should be returned there to generate more nourishing food. It is quite simple but also quite miraculous.” The Romanoffs loved the idea that their food waste could actually benefit others in the community. “Recycled City has done an amazing job creating gardens within our city - in places that would normally not have access to beautifully grown produce," Chad says. "We think that this is such an important movement to be a part of. We also love the ease of using Recycled City. We have a very busy work and home life. They pick up our waste weekly and leave us with new empty bins. It couldn’t be more simple.” 28

Chandler Lifestyle | April 2016

They believe that composting is an important aspect of how they run their business. “We love being able to educate others about composting ," Chad adds. "We have regular conversations with our customers about using Recycled City. It helps represent who we are as a business and illustrates the fact that we have such a respect for food that comes from our earth." From food waste, to the farm and to the table, composting is an important activity that not only creates opportunities for farming and growing fresh produce, but also reduces the waste we create. Recycled City is changing how we view waste and is also encouraging Arizonans to value local produce and urban farming. Learn more at recycledcity.com.

ith a little creative repurposing, you can breathe new life into many common household items – including those destined for the trash. These clever recycling tips, as shared in the upcoming MacGyver School summer experience at Veterans Oasis Park, are good for the environment and your everyday life, too. A TIMELY EMERGENCY KIT

When emergencies strike, your first concern is usually not the time of day. But, your timepiece can certainly help. Use an old watch as a handy, emergency kit by removing the inside gears and filling the empty space with first aid and survival tools. Consider stuffing it with items such as aspirin, bandages, dental floss, foil, magnets, paper clips and anything else of survival value that can fit into a compact space. You might not know what time it is but you’ll surely be prepared for anything. AN UNCANNY HEATER

Heat up your survival skills with a coffee can, roll of toilet paper and a pint of isopropyl alcohol. This makeshift heater packs enough jolt to heat a single room, and since it does not require electricity, it’s ideal for power outages or outdoor activities. Remove the cardboard from the roll of toilet paper, and slide the toilet paper bundle into the empty 1lb. coffee can. Be sure the bundle is just below the top of the rim of the can before pouring in the alcohol. The toilet paper roll will serve as a wick, soaking up all the alcohol. Drop in a lit match and your heater is ready to go. Now the next time your power goes out, you can just head to the pantry for an uncanny replacement. 34

A MINTY FRESH SNARE

Good dental hygiene has more benefits than you thought. The same sturdiness that often makes dental floss uncomfortable on tender gums comes in quite handy in the great outdoors. Instead of using floss to get food out from between your teeth, it can actually be used to put necessary nourishment in you stomach. With a little science, and guidance from a City of Chandler environmental education instructor, floss can be turned into a snare for catching small animals. Bonus, mint flavoring is like candy to tiny game. Ready to learn more? Check out the MacGyver School experience through the City of Chandler’s Parks and Recreation program at ChandlerAZ.gov/registration.
