The Home Issue

MAY 2016

I

t’s hard to believe we’ve lived in our home for eight years. We’re excited to finally be past the point of decorating nurseries and kids’ rooms and have begun focusing on the rest of our home. We are getting ready to spruce up our home with a few pieces of furniture, new lighting and décor. Small changes can definitely make big improvements.

If you’re in the market for a new home, CalAtlantic Homes recently introduced Echelon at Ocotillo. This beautiful community offers single-family homes in the heart of Ocotillo, featuring a gated entry, gorgeous water features including a lake, a resort-style community pool and spa, and is ideally situated near shopping, dining and entertainment. You’ll meet Kevin Davis, owner of Arizona Barn Doors, and learn about the motivation behind the design and construction of these custom doors, wood walls and furniture. Kevin and his team are creating unique products that add character and warmth to any home.

SANTAN BREWING COMPANY SanTan Brewing Company knows that to make great beer one must have great water. And in this case, that good water comes from the snow-capped mountains of northern Arizona. To ensure consistent quality, SanTan Brewing Company joins Crescent Crow Distributing and the National Forest Foundation (NFF) to create Tap to Top. This campaign teaches Phoenix residents about their water (and beer) sources. The campaign also helps to restore National Forests in northern Arizona. “It is simple: Healthy forests equal clean water, which SanTan Brewing uses to make the highest quality, freshest, local beer,” says Anthony Canecchia, founder and brewmaster, SanTan Brewing Company. The NFF's Northern Arizona Forest Fund teams with local businesses and Arizona residents to obtain investments in land and watersheds. The NFF then partners with the U.S. Forest Service to create projects that improve waterways and wetlands, improve wildlife habitats, and restore native plants. 12

This year Northern Arizona Forest Fund projects protected 3,700 acres of land by reducing high-severity fire risks. It also reduced erosion and sedimentation on 31 miles of forest roads. “Our National Forests provide us with unbelievable benefits, including clean air, wood products, recreation opportunities, a natural escape, and so much more,” says Marcus Selig, interim president of the NFF. “Through this campaign, we hope that Arizona residents learn about another important service our National Forests provide –

he two newest home models in Echelon Ocotillo in south Chandler offer home buyers what most communities in the Phoenix area can’t: lake views. “Ocotillo is really the premier master plan in southwest Chandler. It’s arguably the premiere master plan in all of Chandler,” says Reed Porter, division president in the Phoenix area for CalAtlantic Homes, the fourth largest home builder in the country. “It’s a combination of golf and homes and lots of water, which obviously is a very attractive feature in the hot desert in the summer." And the amenities begin at the community’s entrance, which features a gate that is flanked by two waterfalls. “You feel like you’re arriving at the Ritz or Four Seasons. It’s a very dramatic sense of arrival. It’s different from the rest of Ocotillo, in the fact that it’s gated,” says Porter. “It’s a nice way to leave your community and feel like you’ve got some sense of security.” In addition to the stunning entryway, Ocotillo’s property-wide features include the aforementioned lake that includes a boat dock, a resort-like pool, a pool house and a few parks too. The Salerno and Avellino communities are the newest models within the Ocotillo neighborhood. Both models offer one and twostory entries that feature eye-catching staircases. One highlight of the master bathrooms is the walk-in, glass-enclosed showers.

Open kitchens are outfitted with granite or solid stone countertops, oversized islands and the latest finishes on flooring, countertops, and backsplashes. Salerno homes start at $388,900. The Salerno models range in size from 2,414 to 2,967 square feet with two-story home designs featuring three to f ive bedrooms, three bathrooms, two garages and two stories. Single family homes in Avellino start at $482,900. Avellino offers three twostory home designs ranging from 3,235 to 3,757 square feet. These models feature three to five bedrooms, three and a half to four and a half baths and spacious great rooms, amenity-filled kitchens and outdoor living spaces that seamlessly blend in with the indoors. Residents won’t have to venture too far from their community to take advantage of what Chandler has to offer. The community is right across the street from the Ocotillo Village Health Club & Spa that features traditional gym perks like exercise equipment including cardio machines and free weights, but also includes restaurants, spa and salon services and a tennis court. The area is also surrounded by some of Metro Phoenix’s top golf courses. Chandler schools are top rated. Residents are a five-minute drive from Chandler Fashion Center, one of Metro Phoenix’s premier high-end malls. Downtown Ocotillo, teaming with restaurants and a salon, is mere minutes away. Downtown Chandler’s many restaurants and noteworthy SanTan Brewing Company is about a 10-minute drive. “It’s really just a combination of this location, just all new, innovative home designs that I think make it a winning combination for home shoppers. Especially when you walk into the homes. That great center f loor plan that f lows and creates that center of connectivity throughout the home. Those spa-like master suites. It’s on par with five-star resorts,” says Danielle Tocco, national communications director for CalAtlantic Group. “It’s really just a great location and beautiful home design.” 16

BRUNCH AT THE FARM DINE IN A SECRET GARDEN IN THE CITY ARTICLE ASHLEY OAKES SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

N

estled in the Farm District at the base of South Mountain lies a 10-acre pecan grove, a secret oasis in the desert city, called The Farm at South Mountain. The Farm at South Mountain is home to three garden to table restaurants, a modern boutique and also local grower, Maya Dailey. The property that The Farm is on today was once owned by Dwight Heard in the early 1920’s. Heard had a vision for the Farm District in the South Mountain area and sold parcels of land with a cow and 50 chickens to those who would use the land for self-sufficiency and sustainability. The Farm’s mission has stayed in tact through the years, and is now a modern version of this vision thanks to owner, Pat Christofolo and her team. CONTINUED >

GARDEN FRESH (CON TI N U ED)

A BEAUTIFUL VIEW A BEAUTIFUL VIEW

During my visit to The Farm, I visited Morning Glory Café, the breakfast and brunch restaurant that is located at the back of the property. The outdoor patio seating at Morning Glory speaks for itself as to why the small café has grown a reputation throughout the Valley. Rose bushes line a cute picket fence enclosing the restaurant into its own garden. As you sip on coffee or a fresh squeezed mimosa, the green trees, beautiful flowers and organic farm all make up your breakfast canvas.

CULINARY DELIGHTS CULINARY DELIGHTS

Since I dined on a weekend, I was able to select off the menu that offered the “Pork Is the New Black” Omelet. Fresh Hickman eggs become a blanket to this meaty omelet. Inside was local Meat Shop ham, Shreiner’s breakfast sausage, Applewood smoked bacon, onions, peppers and cheese. All of this was slathered with a decadent sausage gravy that I soaked up with the buttermilk biscuit on the plate. Going with the Southwest flair on the menu, I also tried the Huevos Rancheros. Two crispy tortillas were covered with over easy eggs, a green salsa and cheese. On the side were traditional refried beans and crispy potatoes.

After the savory options, I was told that I had to try a sweet brunch treat. I went for the Farm Monte Cristo, because it was not only a fluffy French toast, but also a meaty option. Two pieces of brioche French toast were the outer shell of the humungous breakfast sandwich that was filled with ham, over easy eggs and cheese. The sandwich was dressed with syrup and as you cut into it, the egg yolk created another rich sauce. The two flavors of the sweet syrup and the egg yolk made this dish too good to bring home in a to-go box.

LOCAL GIFTS LOCAL GIFTS

After brunch, there was still more adventures at The Farm to be had. I headed next door to a little shop called Botanica. Inside was a dream of a gift shop. Local artisans and food products lined the cute cottage. On the shop’s patio was an art workshop taking place. I was told to check the website for more upcoming classes. After buying some local honey from McClendon’s Select at Botanica, I walked across to the on-site garden, called Maya’s. Maya Dailey is a prominent local farmer who runs the sustainable garden that harvests certified organic produce. Maya’s provides a seasonal community-supported agriculture (CSA) program for the community to sign up to receive weekly baskets with fresh produce, herbs and flowers, while in return financially supporting this local farm. rassberrys Painting and Coating owner and licensed painting contractor Carole Amsberry Anderson has been transforming Valley homes and commercial properties with high quality workmanship for more than 20 years. She sat down with us and shared expert advice and tips for DIYers or those seeking a professional paint job. Q: HOW DO I CHOOSE THE BEST COLORS FOR MY HOME?

A: It’s all about YOU! Today the popular color trends are moving towards cool grays, which create a fresh and light environment. Things to consider for the interior of your home are lighting, flooring, furnishings, trends and resale. Exterior considerations would be architecture, roof color, and HOA guidelines. We always recommend that our clients get a sample of the paint. It’s better to delay a project for a day than to choose the wrong color and have to purchase new paint.

Q: SHOULD I DO AN ACCENT WALL?

It depends on what look you are going for and the size of the room. Accenting an end wall sometimes makes the room look longer or bigger. Sometimes accenting too many areas makes the room look small or boxy. A:

Q: WHAT TYPE OF PAINT IS RECOMMENDED?

use washable f lat paint on ceilings to help hide any bad drywall issues. Walls are usually painted with high quality lower sheen paint that offers clean ability, which is great for anyone with kids or pets. For wet areas such as the kitchen, bathroom or laundry room, we suggest a little higher sheen for moisture protection. We recommend a non-blocking enamel to prevent doors and casings from sticking together. We use 100 percent acrylic paint on stucco and wood exteriors. Q: IS IT NECESSARY TO USE A PRIMER? A: Yes, especially on any problematic surfaces such as new drywall or extremely glossy surfaces. Priming helps adhesion as well as gives the finished product a more uniform look.

Carole Amsberry Anderson completed the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America (PDCA) Accreditation Program including online education through the organization’s Contractor College in 2015. She is also a board member of the Arizona Chapter PDCA. She and her small team of painters are committed to providing every customer with the highest quality of work, attention to detail and excellent customer service. Arizona BARN DOORS ARTICLE ERICA FORST PHOTOGRAPHY BRIDGETTE MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY

F

or 20 years, Chandler resident Kevin Davis worked in commercial glass. One day, while working on a bathroom project, a client asked Davis to build her a "barn door." Not knowing what creating a barn door entailed, he told the client that he would look into it. Intrigued, Davis went home to work up barn door sketches. He presented these sketches to the client and she loved them. Davis went on to fashion his first barn door for her, which turned out to be a success. Soon after creating his first barn door, a friend got wind of what Davis had constructed and challenged Davis with a trickier project. The new door designer worked through different ideas in the back yard of his home and came up with a design that satisfied the client’s needs. Davis was quickly developing a knack for this barn door making gig.

OFF AND RUNNING

At the suggestion of his pleased clients, Davis started Arizona Barn Doors. The company brings a new style to the Chandler area. Davis states, "Our doors are unique because of the experience as a whole. We offer a custom door that is built to specific standards. We do rustic doors. We do more modern doors. We do bathroom doors with a full length mirror on the inside. We do wood walls and are starting to do furniture, too. Basically we do what our customers want."

28

Chandler Lifestyle | May 2016

Whether the barn doors are used to hide storage, close off an entryway, or create a cozy environment, the sliding addition adds character to a home. And the aesthetic appeal of these doors is found not just in the panel of the door. Davis elaborates, "Another unique thing about Arizona Barn Doors is our hardware. It’s always exposed. In other words they are wide open at the top and in full view. We use steel casters on every door and that look is very industrial/operational. Our customers love it." IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR

Davis is not in this venture alone. He brought the whole crew along. His dad, a Vietnam veteran, runs the shop while his mom, a breast cancer survivor, handles the sanding and stain department. Davis takes care of the sales and his son helps out wherever he can. Together they work as a team to bring customers a great product. “Working with family is a challenge sometimes. I won’t lie,” Davis adds with a laugh. “We have our good times and our bad. But between all of us we can figure out anything. We have to rely on each other and that was something that we had to learn. Now everyone has their responsibilities that contribute to the success of the company.” Arizona Barn Doors is currently taking new orders. To learn more about the company and view photos of the barn doors, visit ArizonaBarnDoors.com or their Facebook page. You can also call 480.430.1236 to speak with Kevin Davis about your project ideas.

Parting Thoughts

Finding Home ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY | JULIE VELEBER

T

he word home for many of us invokes warm feelings. It is our place of solace and refuge after a long day and the place we know we can always return to. But for almost 19,000 foster children in Arizona, home is a very different place. For these children, home is likely a place where they were neglected, physically abused or forced to listen to and see things they should never have. For those taken away, home can be a loving foster home, a not so loving foster home, family members, or, in the worst case scenario, a group home. Almost three years ago, my husband, daughter and I decided we were going to help my beloved home state and the growing crisis by becoming a foster family. We couldn’t watch the news and read about the children sleeping in DCS offices anymore. The decision was not an easy one but it will forever be the right one. I will never forget the day little C arrived at our door. It was only three days after we became licensed when we got the call for a 4-year-old little girl. We said yes without hesitation. She arrived on a rainy evening, and as we approached her, she turned around, smiled and happily chirped her name. As she toured the house and her new room, with her eyes big, she exclaimed “it’s perfect.” With the smiles, came many tears. C missed her mom, dad and her five siblings so much. She struggled to find a way to love us and her family. She had regular visits with them and would come back to us in a whirlwind of emotion but we assured her that her heart was big enough for everyone. We knew our time with our little monkey was limited as she was going to live with a family member soon. We made the best of every day. We were able to give her so many firsts: her first time in preschool, first visit to the zoo and one of the best memories, her first trip to the beach. The day we said our goodbyes was not an easy one. For five months I had loved and taken care of this little girl as my own. As I kneeled down, we said our thing, “C, where do I live now?” “In my heart.” “C, Where do you live now?” “In your heart,” she said as she put her hand over my heart. As I watched her skip away to play with her siblings, I hoped that she would always remember us and the place she called home for awhile. There are so many children in the Valley that need loving homes. If you are considering becoming a foster parent or want to know how you can help, please visit Dcs.az.gov.
