Lifestyle Letter
Hello from your new publisher I
JUNE 2016 publisher
Joyce Selk | Joyce.Selk@LifestylePubs.com
t’s very exciting to be able to introduce myself as the new publisher of Chandler Lifestyle. I’m looking forward to working with the entire Lifestyle team to spotlight the good news that's happening in our community and connect residents to local businesses and organizations.
As a bit of background, I moved to Chandler from St. Louis, Mo. in 2014 (Go Cards!). Who knew I had to move to the desert to live on a lake? I come from a family of entrepreneurs and owned a few businesses back in the Lou. I was actively involved in my community and moving to Chandler had me missing that feeling of being connected. I’m thrilled to be taking on this new venture as I know it will give me the opportunity to make those same meaningful relationships here in Chandler, too. This magazine is for you and we encourage you to be a part of it! There will continue to be local stories and content that is important to you, our readers – about the people and places you know and love. We hope you'll look forward to reading Chandler Lifestyle every month. I encourage you to share your good news by submitting ideas that you think would interest other readers and interact with us on our Facebook page. We love learning about the special things people are doing in our community to make a difference whether it’s you, a child, a neighbor, a business or a charitable organization. We also want to cover all the exclusive events and activities taking place in Chandler and the surrounding areas so you don’t miss a thing!

GRANT BRINGS WONDER TO CASTEEL HIGH
Please visit our Facebook page and website for updates and additional information.
With a grant from the City of Chandler Diversity Office, Casteel High School has bought 47 copies of "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio. The story centers around August Pullman, a fifth grader with a facial deformity. “Auggie” enters a new school and encounters challenges being the new kid with an unfamiliar look. The book gives its readers a better understanding of what it is like to be looked at as “different” and through its story, teaches empathy, kindness, and understanding. Casteel High School is located at 24901 South Power Road. To encourage reading, Casteel High held a daily raffle and gave away a KIND bar each day for a month to a chosen student who read "Wonder." Students also signed their name to a bulletin board in the library that says, “Choose Kind.” Efforts to acquire this grant were inspired by the new self-contained special education Andrea Stickland, DVM

Medmetrics Compounding Pharmacy SERVING AS A COMMUNITY RESOURCE FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS ARTICLE ERICA FORST | PHOTOGRAPHY BRIDGETTE MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY
G
rowing up, Adam McCown was always interested in math and science in school. He knew a career in healthcare was the goal, but it wasn't until the end of college that he knew pharmacy would be his path to follow. McCown explains that he chose pharmacy because, “it is a great field that combines clinical expertise with an opportunity to help a wide variety of people, from babies to senior adults.”
Thinking Outside Thinking Outside the Pillboxthe Pillbox
After earning his PharmD, McCown headed south from Seattle to Chandler and teamed up with co-owner and fellow Chandler resident, Taylor Froiland to create Medmetrics, a full-service community pharmacy. What makes the company unique is that in addition to dispensing prescription medications like typical big box pharmacies, Medmetrics is also a compounding pharmacy. Compounding medications means that prescriptions can be tailored to a patient's unique needs. This helps with children who cannot swallow medications, specific dosing of bio-identical hormones, and pets who are too big or too small for conventional doses. “[Taylor] and I started Medmetrics because we have a different kind of vision for what we think a pharmacy should be," McCown explains. "We both have a background in traditional community pharmacy settings, but grew frustrated with the high work volume and lack of patient/customer interaction.” That's when they joined forces.
14
Chandler Lifestyle | June 2016
“We believe the pharmacy setting should be the cornerstone of health and wellness in a pro-active sense," he says. "We built Medmetrics to be an asset and a resource for the community for health and wellness. Historically, medicine in this country has been a world leader in treating and curing acute disease but we're not very advanced in terms of day-to-day wellness and preventive medicine. That's where our passion lies, and where we think medicine should be advancing.”
Settling Down and Starting Up inSettling Chandler Down and Starting Up in Chandler
McCown is not the only one in the family involved in the business. His wife, Bryanne, is also a pharmacist. The two met at the University of Washington while pursuing their Doctor of Pharmacy degrees. Bryanne has extensive experience in compounding, infectious disease (HIV/AIDS medicine), and geriatrics. Soon after pharmacy school, McCown and his wife settled in Ocotillo.
“We were initially drawn to the area because of the beautiful green areas since it was a bit of an adjustment from the Pacific Northwest to the desert," McCown says. "But now, we like the area and the family-friendly environment especially for our 5-year-old twin daughters, the strong school system, and the local community feel.” Long-term goals for McCown is to establish Medmetrics as the premier access point for health and wellness while continuing to provide the community with accurate information and quality products. Medmetrics accepts most insurance plans and along with prescription medications, the pharmacy also carries a large variety of professional-grade vitamins and supplements. Medmetrics is located at 4995 South Alma School Road, Suite 4. To learn more about the pharmacy, visit MedmetricsRx.com.

Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona making a positive impact on local youth PROVIDING KIDS AN OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN SPORTS ARTICLE AMY AGUIRRE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
T
here are a multitude of positive benefits that come with youth involvement in athletics. Whether a child wins or loses, they leave the game with important life lessons. Sports not only allows a child to live out a healthy active lifestyle, but it also allows them to learn important social and emotional skills. Sports helps a child develop friendships, join a community and learn the importance of teamwork. Unfortunately many Arizona kids do not have easy access to participate in sports, the money to afford sports equipment or the opportunity to attend sporting events. Mark Roden and Subway have made it one of their goals to help provide access to sports for Arizona kids. INSPIRATION
Mark Roden is a local Arizona Subway franchisee. Roden was inspired to run his own company following a conversation he had with his father about his father’s dream of owning his own business. His father passed away five months later. 16
Chandler Lifestyle | June 2016
“I thought often about his dream and it inspired me to take that shot at the entrepreneurial opportunity at Subway,” Roden says. Roden now owns 53 Subway restaurants in Arizona and five in Hawaii. He runs all of the restaurants from the Desert Subway headquarters located in Chandler. Roden and Subway decided to start the organization Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona in order to give back to the Arizona community. “The mission of Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona is to provide sports equipment, uniforms, registration fees and access to major sporting events for those who might not otherwise be able to participate,” Roden says. The organization began in 1999, and since then has impacted the lives of over 25,000 kids and families. One special sports moment Roden experienced as a child was when his father took him out of school to go watch the Minnesota State High School hockey tournament. That day Roden and his father
watched four hockey games with a combined eight overtimes. The last game continued past midnight and they stayed until the end. “Going to sporting events and bonding with my dad is definitely one of my favorite moments, and one reason why I think sports is so important for kids and families today,” Roden says. FUNDRAISING EVENTS AND GRANTS
In order to make sports more accessible for Arizona kids, Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona hosts events each year. Along with their partners Dasani Water, Subway, Shamrock Farms and the Be Kind People Project, they host the Cycle for Success program which begins in August. The program awards two students each month for performing random acts of kindness. The children are awarded new bikes, along with helmets and locks. The Cycle for Success program is Roden’s favorite aspect of the organization.
“Going into schools throughout the state and connecting with students there is not only a program highlight for me, but quite simply the best day every month,” he says. The group also hosts an annual Subway Kids & Sports Golf Tournament and Top Golf Takeover which is planned to take place in October. They are still currently in need of sponsors. Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona also has an annual grant program. “Since 1999, Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona has raised funds to provide annual grants to nonprofit organizations focused on helping children gain access to sports, sports equipment, registration fees and more,” Roden says. "Former recipients of the grants include Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Arizona, Gene Lewis Boxing Club, Arizona Friends of Foster Children and Ball for All. The organization plans to award over $45,000 in grant money to local nonprofits this year and will announce the 2016 recipients in the upcoming months. Like Roden’s childhood hockey memory, Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona is working hard to give each child the opportunity to make their own memories by playing a sport or sitting in the stands to watch their local team. Subway Kids & Sports of Arizona believes basic sports skills: teamwork, commitment and accountability help kids throughout their lives. TEX EARNHARDT (CONTINUED) SUCCESS AT AN EARLY AGE
Earnhardt, who spent his early years on a ranch in the Rio Grande Valley in Southern Texas, eventually moved to Chandler, Arizona with his family. When he was awarded a Ford franchise in Chandler in 1951, Earnhardt became the youngest Ford franchise owner in the United States. Not content to rest on his laurels with the one successful Ford dealership, Earnhardt went on to acquire several more automobile franchises. It didn’t take long for East Valley residents to become familiar with the affable cowboy car salesman. Earnhardt became widely known for his great deals on cars and for the bull that he rode in his commercials, as well as his trademark slogan, “That ain’t no bull.” Interestingly, this well-known line is an ideal example of truth in advertising, since the bull that Earnhardt rode in CONTINUED > the ads was actually a steer.

TEX EARNHARDT (CONTINUED) GROWING THE BUSINESS
Over the years, Earnhardt’s Ford franchises became a family affair; first his sons Hal and Jim Babe joined him in the business and eventually his grandkids. Today, the Earnhardt family is part of one of the largest automotive empires in the country, with 19 dealerships selling 17 brands of vehicles. In addition to Chandler, people who are in the market for a vehicle can find Earnhardt dealerships in a variety of cities including Gilbert, Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale and Goodyear. The Earnhardt family’s dedication and devotion to the well-being of their nearly 3,000 employees who work at Earnhardt Auto Centers is as legendary as Earnhardt’s lively commercials. GIVING BACK
In literally hundreds of cases over the years, the Earnhardt family has personally given moral and financial support to employees who were facing a family tragedy or illness. A variety of charities and other worthy causes have also been positively impacted by the Earnhardt family’s generous spirit and philanthropy. This desire to give back to the community has definitely rubbed off on their employees; many of whom participate in the company’s charity program called H.E.A.R.T., which involves donating a portion of their paycheck to a different charity each month. The City of Chandler may have significantly grown and changed over the past 65 years, but the Earnhardt family’s commitment to their employees and community remains as steadfast as ever. Looking ahead, Earnhardt and his family remain committed to top-notch service, affordable prices and a great selection of some of the most popular vehicles in the Valley. And that, of course, ain’t no bull!

rizona is home to some of the most stunning scenery in the country, and if you're searching for a way to connect with nature,
you might want to consider camping. Waking up in the wild can be a rejuvenating experience. You can make it a men-only weekend for a short getaway or bring the whole family if looking for a fun way to bond.Â

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK If you're searching for a camping trip that will take you to Arizona's most iconic site, consider heading to the Grand Canyon North Rim Campground. Kim Hanna, the Arizona blogger behind camping recipe site Camping for Foodies, says the North Rim is ideal, since it's about 1,000 feet higher than the South Rim and much cooler. She describes it as remote and less likely to draw large crowds. "The campground is filled with tall trees, awesome views and a lot of “breathing room,” which is really nice since you are not too close to the campsite next door. I love that less people means more wildlife in viewing distance from the campsites and hiking trails. From the campground, there is an easy hiking trail that takes you to the area with lodging, restaurants, gift shops and lookout points," Hanna writes in an email. Besides checking out the Grand Canyon, you also can visit Navajo Bridge, Navajo Nation Indian Reservation, Colorado River's Marble Canyon and the Historic Cameron Trading Post, which specializes in Native American Crafts. Lodging and restaurants open in mid-May and close mid-October.
MOGOLLON RIM Located in Northern Arizona, to the southeast of Flagstaff, you can take in sweeping views of the Mogollon Rim, accessed by Forest Road 300, which features sweeping views of the sky, trees and the seemingly endless and diverse Arizona scenery.
"You can pull up to the edge of the Mogollon Rim, and there will be this incredible landscape stretching around you, and no one around most of the time,” says Annemarie Medrzycki, digital marketing manager at Arizona Outback Adventures. The area offers hiking and horseback trails, lakes for boating and fishing, and creeks where you can swim.

GROOM CREEK IN PRESCOTT If you're looking to get away from it all, but still be close enough to Prescott to grab a meal at a restaurant in town, Medrzycki says Groom Creek is the perfect place to be. There are many boulders for rock climbing in the area, and you can enjoy horseback riding trails throughout, too. Hikers and mountain bikers can head to Spruce Mountain, which is near Groom Creek, to soak up all of Prescott’s renowned woodland scenery on this nine-mile loop trail.

LEXUS OFFERS ITS FIRST ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN
A
woman stopped to talk as I was photographing the Lexus NX 200t. She is a Lexus owner and loved the fact that this compact crossover looks like a Darth Vader mask. I, on the other hand, think the maw-like spindle grille and angular styling is so overdone and cartoonish that it doesn’t seem fitting for a luxury brand. So that’s the NX 200t’s styling in a nutshell: you either like it or you don’t. Lexus clearly wants to appeal to a young audience and shed past criticism that its cars were not sporty enough. A similarly polarizing design is also found on the new RX350. With that gripe out of the way, it’s time to look closer. Design aside, the NX 200t appeals to me on many levels. Its 104.7-inch wheelbase is the same as the Toyota RAV4. Dimensionally, it is 2.4 inches longer, .6 inches lower and 1 inch wider than the RAV. The NX200t is handy because it is easy to maneuver, has a frugal 2.0-liter engine and its price won’t break the bank. Prices start at $34,865 for front-wheel drive and $36,265 for all-wheel drive. The F-Sport model has a more aggressive front grille and bumper, special wheels and sport seats. Prices start at $36,965 for front-wheel drive and $38,365 for all-wheel drive. I drove an all-wheel-drive F-Sport from the Lexus press fleet and its sticker price was $43,988. 30

22 in the city, 28 on the highway
Typical of Lexus, the NX 200t has a first-rate level of fit, finish and quality of materials. The cabin is a tad small but the front seats, covered in two-tone leather, were attractive and quite comfortable. The split-folding rear seat also reclines. The rear hatch is big enough for sizable items, and a power option is available. The instrument panel has an LCD screen atop the center stack and it displays audio and navigation information. A “remote touch interface” pad on the console replaces the former mouse-like joystick on earlier models. The square pad responds to movements of your finger much like the touchpad of a laptop. I’m a fairly tech savvy person who embraces new technology but I found the touchpad and system interface were not nearly as easy to use as a mouse-like controller. Inside the center console is a Qi-compatible wireless charging tray for smartphones although it does not work with iPhones.
Lexus says the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is its first. It has a four-into-two exhaust manifold that pairs cylinders according to their compression stroke and that reduces turbo lag. Throttle response was nearly as linear as that of a normally aspirated engine. With 235 horsepower under foot, the NX 200t accelerated briskly and cruised comfortably at highway speeds. The all-wheel drive system uses frontwheel drive during normal cruising. When conditions require more traction, the system engages the rear differential and up to 50 percent of available torque can be sent to the rear wheels. This system also helps the vehicle during cornering. A hybrid version, the NX300h, starts at $39,720 for front-wheel drive and $41,310 for all-wheel drive. It combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with three electric motors. One charges the hybrid battery, one drives the front wheels and one drives the rear wheels. Total power output is 348 horsepower. Fuel economy is rated at 33 in the city and 30 on the highway.
TURBO IN THE NX 200T WARRANTY: Four years or 50,000 miles, with a
six-year, 70,000-mile powertrain warranty.
PRICE: The base price of the test car was $36,965.
Options included the Qi-compatible wireless charging tray, Homelink garage door opener, 18-inch F-Sport wheels, navigation, auto-dimming outside mirrors, power tailgate and the F-Sport package of heated front seats, power sunroof, tilt/telescoping steering wheel and 10-way driver’s seat. The sticker price was $43,988.
POINT: The NX 200t is a small crossover vehicle
that is easy to maneuver, gets good gas mileage and has 235 horsepower from a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. The fit and finish are excellent. For me, the bold styling overshadows the vehicle’s strong points.

JALAPEÑO COLESLAW
SIGNATURE SAUCES
Meat has always been in the blood for Brady Bogen, co-owner of Porkopolis. It started in the 1860's when his great-great-great-grandfather coined the term "porkopolis" in Ohio when he became the largest pork producer in the United States. Fast forward to 2012 in Chandler, AZ, when Bogen partnered with co-owner Matt Hamilton. Bogen had always had a thing for sauces and Hamilton gained success in the restaurant industry. It was a natural fit to combine the two for a restaurant focused on the sauces. Hot n Sweet, Siracha, Hot n Yaki, and the signature Sweet n Smokey are the flavors for the line of sauces at Porkopolis. The original flavors created for Porkopolis were tested in The Meat Shop, a local butchery. After receiving approval from their customers, Bogen and Hamilton knew they had the sauce that would elevate their restaurant concept. The four flavors of the Porkopolis sauce line are what make each dish unique. A favorite appetizer, the Brisket Burnt Ends, are "the candy of barbecue" and are topped with Sweet n Smokey sauce. Try Porkopolis' take on a taco with the Red-Neck Tacos. These tacos start with a cornbread pancake used as the tortilla, filled with Sweet n Smokey pulled pork and topped with a jalapeño slaw. COME HUNGRY
Hamilton's go-to plate is the house-smoked ribs with the Sweet n Smokey sauce. Bogen's favorite is the Brisket Salad topped with beef brisket, fresh strawberries, blue cheese crumbles and candied pecans. The Brady Bacon Burger is also a favorite. This burger is a 50/50 combination of bacon and beef to make a savory and juicy plate and is finished with a jalapeño slaw, strips of bacon, pepper jack cheese and a barbecue aioli. Once you've had this burger, most come back for the Brady Burger Challenge. For the challenge, the burger is tripled into five pounds and accompanied with a pound of fries tossed in meat rub and a pound of baked beans. The time to beat is 26 minutes. Do so and Hamilton and Bogen will hand you a crisp $100 bill. The manliest of meals don't always come with a Porkopolis sauce. The Midwestern Ribeye Steak, Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich and Pork and Green Chili Burrito are all great options if you'd like to pass up the sauce. Each dish on the Porkopolis menu pairs perfectly with the signature cocktails from the bar, which includes several TV's that make for a great spot to watch a favorite game. Grab a moonshine cocktail or bacon-infused vodka during happy hour Monday through Friday from 3 to 6:30 p.m. A piece of Midwestern history created a modern barbecue staple right here in Chandler. Stop by Porkopolis seven days a week for lunch and dinner or brunch on Sundays. 34
