Get ready for your next travel adventure! A

fter 22 years in Arizona, I’m still not acclimated to the dreadful summer heat. The days and nights are long and hot and I struggle to keep my kids entertained and hydrated. Our one big saving grace every year is a summer vacation. Normally we head to the beach in San Diego, but this year we’re trying something new. We’re venturing up to the cool mountains of Colorado for hiking, biking and plenty of time in the great outdoors. I think the biggest gift I can give my children is the opportunity to travel – not only to escape the 117-degree temperatures – but to get out and explore, see new sites and create lasting memories. As a family of five, it’s not easy (or cheap!) to hop on a plane. Instead, we’ve created a “road trip bucket list” of nearby places we’d like to visit, even if it’s just for the day or over a long weekend. You’d be surprised at how much fun your kids can have fishing with plastic poles and glitter bait in a tiny lake just two hours away. This month’s travel issue explores the beauty of Napa Valley, Calif. Our writer Alison shares her experience and travel tips throughout majestic wine country. You'll learn about a wine paired dinner at Robert Mondavi Winery, an aerial tram ride at Sterling, and a wine blending class at Franciscan Estate Winery. With beautiful resorts and spas, fivestar restaurants and plenty of fun activities, Napa is truly a destination vacation spot. If you’re looking for something a little closer to home, a staycation at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North is a great option. This magnificent resort offers topnotch service and luxury amenities featuring golf, swimming, dining, live music and other activities for the entire family. Summer wouldn’t be complete without cool treats. This month we’re sharing two of the best kept secrets in Chandler: Ice Cream Sammies and Sunny SnoBalls. These family-owned-and-operated businesses are serving up delicious homemade ice cream and creative flavors of shaved ice. We also included plenty of summer tips, including traveling with an RV and achieving a stress-free vacation with your kids. Despite these unbearable temperatures, you can still make the most of your summer. Did I mention we’re driving to Colorado? Two adults, three kids and 12 hours on the road (one way). It’s bound to be an unforgettable adventure. Wish me luck! Until next time,

Ice Den Chandler Offers Blessed Relief From The Relentless Summertime Heat ARTICLE ALISON STANTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

D

uring the winter on the East Coast and other frozen parts of the country, residents often complain about being snowed in. Here in the uber-hot desert, we have our own version of this weather-caused problem in the summer: we are baked in! After admiring pictures and reading posts on social media from our friends and family in “cooler” states about their trips to the beach, glorious picnics at the park and rowdy games of badminton in the backyard, we are wondering how we will make it through another day of 110-plus degree days with our kiddos, most of whom have succumbed to cabin fever. Fortunately, there is hope for making it through the dog days of summer, and it’s in the form of a fabulously frigid place called Ice Den Chandler. Mike O’Hearn, president of Ice Den Chandler, says he is proud that the facility offers a wide range of activities that the entire family can enjoy. “Starting with parent and pup classes for toddlers wanting to learn to skate, figure skating for all ages and abilities and hockey at the youth, travel and adult levels, our programs offer something for everyone,” he says. 14

Chandler Lifestyle | July 2016

DRESS WARMLY

Marcy Fileccia, vice president of marketing and communications for Coyotes Ice, LLC, agrees that Ice Den Chandler is a perfect place for parents and kids to stay cool when the mercury threatens to break right out of the thermometer. In fact, she says, visitors to the facility should forego shorts and tank tops for sweatshirts and mittens. “The average temperature in the rink is 56 degrees year round and offers a tremendous and welcome relief from plus 100 temperatures during hot Arizona summers,” she says. “We encourage all skaters and spectators to dress accordingly for warmth and safety. The ice surface itself is kept at approximately 18 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure the best ice quality.” FACILITY IMPROVEMENTS

As Fileccia notes, the building was originally built in 1999. It was acquired by Coyotes Ice, LLC—which has owned and operated the Ice Den Scottsdale since 1998—in early 2014 and was closed for a 4-month, approximately $6 million extensive renovation.

“The building reopened in August, 2014 under the name Ice Den Chandler,” she says, adding that highlights of the renovation include two completely rebuilt ice surfaces, new flooring and lighting. The facility also now includes amenities like a retail shop for hockey and figure skaters, 18 Degrees Express Grill and the Chilly Bean Café. Taylor Burke, Owner of Ice Den Chandler and a local resident, says he has been thrilled by the warm welcome the cool facility enjoyed from the Chandler community. “The support we have received from the Chandler community has been overwhelming from the moment we purchased the building,” he says. “Hockey and skating are both very demanding sports that require families to invest a lot of time at the rink, we are honored that they choose the Ice Den Chandler as their home away from home.” Ice Den Chandler is located at 7225 W. Harrison St. in Chandler. For more information, call 480.598.9400 or visit CoyotesIceChandler.com.

ack in December of 1999, while some people were preparing their bunkers for Y2K, the Four Seasons was busy putting the final touches on its magnificent resort in the Pinnacle Peak area of the Valley of the Sun. The goal of the resort was to provide guests with top-notch service and luxury amenities. “As with every Four Seasons property, the cornerstone of the brand is providing seamless, intuitive service," says Kim Cole, director of public relations. "Guests can expect a relaxed environment, but with all the special touches that make an experience truly memorable. Summer is the perfect time to slow down, relax with your family and friends and enjoy the comfort and ease of a staycation.” This level of quality has continued through the years. And though the temperatures soar through the summer season, the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North is still at it providing exceptional experiences to its guests. Whether it is during a couple’s romantic getaway or a fun-filled weekend with the family. “Summer is the time of making memories and sharing stories that will last a lifetime," says General Manager and Regional Vice President Vince Parrotta.

Recently, the resort started off its summer with a healthy bang by celebrating Global Wellness Day. The annual wellness day focused on the importance of staying healthy and maintaining wellness.

“Living well is all about balance," says Lia Rowland, spa director. "Global Wellness Day provides a great reminder to recharge, reconnect and take time to instill and support those overall wellness efforts.” The weekend started June 10 with guests indulging in healthy foods like superfood salads and heart-healthy power bowls. Guests were greeted with farmer’s market themed welcome amenities and health-conscious poolside treats, like kale peanut butter smoothies and fresh sliced watermelon. The weekend included two outdoor yoga classes and spa treatments. The Four Seasons restaurant Talavera paired with Kale & Clover to offer a four-course menu with optional organic wine pairings.

eginning in the 1860s, wineries including Charles Krug, Schramsberg and Inglenook began to spring up in Napa Valley, California. In 1976, the Judgement of Paris took place, pitting Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays from California against the best wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy in a blind tasting. Thanks to big wins by the likes of Chateau Montelena, Napa Valley earned respect as a winemaking region – and became an overnight international tourism hot spot. And now, exactly 40 years since that fateful tasting, there is a new milestone: Allegiant Airlines now flies directly into the Napa/Sonoma Regional Airport from Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. This means getting to the premier wine country in the United States has never been easier – or more affordable. But with more than 500 wineries in the area – not to mention some of the highest-rated eateries and resorts in the nation – where does one even start? Luckilly, we're here to help. 18

Stay

Calistoga Ranch Outdoor Living Room

STAY

Luxury resorts abound in Napa. And while some are pricey, there are significant discounts available to guests willing to stay Sunday-Thursday. Flights are also readily available during the week. CALISTOGA RANCH

Calistoga Ranch is an exclusive resort overlooking historic Lake Lommel that features just 50 guest lodges and 22 exquisite owner lodges. Rooms range from 600 to 3,000 square feet and boast floor-toceiling windows as well as outdoor shower gardens where guests can (privately) shower under the stars. There is also an award-winning spa on site as well as one of the most-acclaimed restaurants in Napa: The

CHATEAU MONTELENA

Calistoga Ranch Stream

Lakehouse. Solely serving resort guests, the restaurant uses organic ingredients from local farmers to create evolving menus in line with the seasons. Other resort best bets: Solage Calistoga, Silverado Resort and Spa, Auberge du Soleil and The Meritage Resort and Spa.

Wine

WINE

Given the sheer number of wineries in the area, it is worth looking into the experience each one offers before booking a reservation or tour. Care to visit a wine cave? Blend your own wine? Ride an air tram to a tasting? Napa offers it all – and more. SCHRAMSBERG

Not only was Schramsberg among the first wineries in the region, it was the very first to dig into Napa’s hillside to create wine caves. Yes, caves. At any given time, as many as 2.7 million bottles of sparkling wine line the 34,000-sqaure-foot Schramsberg caves, each aging two to ten years before release. The vineyard offers tours of the caves, which culminate in a candlelit wine tasting underground, seven days a week and limits each tour to just 12 guests.

“When our wine was selected as an entry to the Paris Tasting 40 years ago, we couldn't have imagined the impact it would have on the American and global wine industry,” says CEO and Master Winemaker Bo Barrett. “After the win, Dad really said it best: ‘Not bad for kids from the sticks.’" Kids from the sticks no more, the winery gained such acclaim those 40 years ago that its journey was profiled in the 2008 movie “Bottle Shock” starring Bill Pullman, Chris Pine and Alan Rickman. As impressive as the film and other accolades is the show-stopping Chateau itself. Draped in bright green ivy, it resembles an English Gothic castle, and its tasting room is perched on the top floor to allow for some of the best vineyard views in the world. Tours are offered seven days a week and are limited to just eight guests. FRANCISCAN ESTATE WINERY

If you are a wine geek, you probably know the Franciscan Estate as the very first winery in the Napa Valley to bottle a Chardonnay – our Cuvee Sauvage – using only wild (native) yeasts. Or perhaps you know them thanks to their umpteen honors from the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, Sunset Wine Competition, Sunset International Wine Competition and Grand Harvest Awards, just to name a few. But whether a wine geek or not, Franciscan offers one of the most interactive – and fun – wine

experiences in Napa: a wine blending class.

During the interactive program, a trusted wine expert shows guests how to blend the winery’s

most-beloved varietal, the Magnificat, while taking them through several specific types

of wine. Each guest is also given beakers,

various measuring instruments and glasses

to blend together a signature blend of his or her very own. The kicker – guests can even name their creations. STERLING

Sterling offers guests a sky-high winery

experience – literally. The “flight” into this

winery is reason enough to visit. Perched atop a hillside, guests take an aerial tram – the

only one of its kind in Napa – to the winery,

which offers stunning views for miles in each direction. From the moment visitors depart the tram, they are greeted with wine as they

are ushered into one of several tour and tasting

options. Elevated walkways, on-site art galleries and motion-activated flat screens that

provide detailed information of all the vineyard

has to offer abound. This is a great winery for those who prefer to tour at their own pace.

Inspired by Robert Mondavi’s autobiography “Harvests of Joy,” where the icon shares how he combined his passion for Napa and business savvy with an undeniable joie de vivre to become, perhaps, the best-known American winemaker of all time, the Robert Mondavi Winery offers two extraordinary dining experiences right on property – a rarity in the region. During the Harvests of Joy lunch, which is limited to just 10 people, guests are taken on a private tour of the estate and then seated in the Vineyard Room, which overlooks the famed To Kalon Vineyard and neighboring Mayacamas Mountains. Acclaimed in-house chef Jeff Mosier then uses local ingredients to dream up a three-course menu paired with some of Mondavi’s favorite wines. For those looking for something special for dinner, the vineyard also offers a Garden to Table experience that features a tour of the winery’s expansive gardens, where you will get the chance to harvest your own produce. Before sitting down to dinner, guests are actually taken behind the scenes into the kitchen to learn how to cook with their chosen produce. Then, as Mosier prepares a wine-paired dinner, guests have the chance to explore the winery before joining Chef outside to dine under the stars. BOTTEGA

Most of Napa’s most-beloved eateries are headed by celebrity chefs. Bottega is no different. Led by James Beard darling Michael Chiarello, both the Emmy-winning host of the Food Network’s Easy Entertaining and a fierce competitor on Bravo’s Top Chef Masters¸ Bottega takes pride in offering regional Italian cuisine. Their goal is to showcase Italy’s 20 or so regions, as each little town and city has its own distinct cooking style and spin on seemingly similar dishes. Other amazing restaurants include: The French Laundry, Morimoto, Redd’s, Mustard’s Grill, Celedon, Sam’s Social Club and Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch. Plan your trip at VisitNapaValley.com.

SCOTTSDALE RV

S

ummertime means summer vacation, and for many people the best way to relax and unwind is to venture into the great outdoors. For those who like to bring along some of the comforts of home while camping in style, Scottsdale RV has been there to help for the past 10 years. Owned by Ryan Beckmann and Rick Crankshaw, Scottsdale RV has established itself as one of the premier RV dealerships in the Valley, as well as one of the most convenient to get to. “We picked Scottsdale for its centralized location to be able to serve the entire Valley,” explains Rick. “We are the only RV dealership conveniently located to be able to serve everyone, unless you are willing to drive way out east or up to the northwest Valley. We also do a lot of out-of-state business, and being this close to the airport is also a big help for business.” Scottsdale RV was originally founded as an independent dealer of previously owned RVs, though over the last few years they’ve elected to offer a wide selection of new models as well. They are proud to represent Work and Play Toy Haulers, of which they are the #1 dealer on the West Coast, as well as a diverse line of Coachmen RV's, one of the most successful names in the RV industry since 1964. “With Coachmen, it’s really just about their quality, their consistency, their level of customer service, and really their continued reputation in this business,” explains Rick. 22

Chandler Lifestyle | July 2016

With over 30 years in the RV industry, the Scottsdale team is not just in the business of selling RVs, but as avid RVers themselves, have a passion for them as well. They pride themselves in curating a personalized buying experience, and will do what it takes to make sure that every one of their clients are given the proper attention to ensure that by the time they leave the lot they are prepared and excited for their first adventure. Whether you are new to the scene and are still unsure of what you might want, or have been in it for years and are looking to upgrade, Scottsdale RV is ready to help with an average of around 80 units on-site. Truly a one-stop-shop, they also work with a wide array of banks and credit unions to offer competitive financing options, and are also well-versed in shipping across the country or even overseas. “We have something for everyone, from somebody who wants to spend $10K on a nice, solid travel trailer, up to somebody who wants to spend $200K on something top-of the line,” says Rick, who himself has been known to pick-up an incoming client from Sky Harbor or even deliver an RV to a client and do a six-hour walk-through of the unit at their own home. Scottsdale RV is located at 6701 E. McDowell Road just West of 67th St. For more information on their selection of RV's or to view their most current inventory, visit their website at ScottsdaleRV.com.

rizona summers normally require a surplus of refreshing drinks and foods to survive the heat. This summer, your family won’t complain when you take them out of the house for one of these icy cold Chandler treats. ICE CREAM SAMMIES

COOL

TREATS

Ice Cream Sammies started after friends Ariana, Joel and Jaime were eating dessert on vacation. Jaime had grown up making her own ice cream for special occasions, and with her culinary background, she dabbled in cookie baking as well. They knew they could make a better ice cream sandwich and from there Ice Cream Sammies opened two years later in March of 2016. The ice cream and cookies at the Downtown Chandler shop are all made from scratch. To be sure the shop had the best ice cream Chandler could find, the trio spent a year taking chemistry of ice cream classes at Penn State University and meeting with multiple dairies across the country to find the perfect cream. The results are easily noticed with the smooth and light dessert. Ariana, Jaime and Joel wanted Ice Cream Sammies to be a shop with simply delicious ice cream. Each day you can expect around 16 f lavors of ice cream and six flavors of cookies. Pick your ice cream flavor and then mix and match your cookies for the ultimate ice cream sammie. The ice cream changes frequently, which is a plus for you.

Some recent flavors have been blackberry cheese cake, orange creamsicle, salted caramel and fruity loop. Also available daily are classic treats such as floats, shakes and sundaes. Ice Cream Sammies recently partnered with local Bosa donuts to create a unique donut ice cream sandwich. Next door to the shop is Burst of Butterflies, a paint studio. The two businesses share a patio which is a perfect spot to host painting birthday parties with Ice Cream Sammies treats. The shared patio is also dog friendly so the whole family can come! Ice Cream Sammies is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The shop is located at 135 W. Boston St. in Chandler, AZ 85225. Learn more at OriginalSammies.com. CONTINUED >

SUNNY SNOBALLS

Bring your family to another Chandler family owned business: Sunny SnoBalls. This shaved ice shop is no ordinary ice and syrup stand. Owners Chance and Diana were inspired by an old home town hut along with styles of shaved ice found in New Orleans. After success with starting a mobile shaved ice business in the Chandler area, Chance and Diane found a storefront to call home. With bright colors and tables with tiki umbrellas, Sunny SnoBalls is the perfect spot to have a fun evening with the family. When creating your frosty snoball concoction, typically you begin by picking a flavor for your ice. Sunny SnoBalls offers 100 flavors made fresh with no fructose, corn syrup or preservatives. They also offer sugar-free and dye-free options. Normally your shaved ice experience stops there, but not at Sunny SnoBalls. In addition to the fresh made flavors, customers can also stuff, fluff and top their shaved ice. Stuffing your shaved ice is New Orleans style and it means adding a few scoops of ice cream at the bottom of your cup. Toppings on the menu include regular sweet cream and chocolate along with exotic items such as Chamoy, Tajin, Li Hing Mui and Tamarind Straw. Lastly fluff it with homemade fluff from local shop, Fluff It Marshmallows! With so many options, the combinations for the family are endless. If you can’t choose on your own, Sunny SnoBalls has a wall of “The Best Ones” to help you decide. The Muddy Puddles is a decadent favorite with chocolate ice, sweet cream, caramel, crushed Oreo and a candy worm. The Pickadilly is a sweet and sour combination with diced pickles, Chamoy and Tajin. Make your shaved ice trip a night out with the family because if you bring your same-day receipt from Sunny SnoBalls into neighbor business Extreme Air, you will receive an extra hour of jumping for free. Visit Sunny SnoBalls at 980 E. Pecos Rd, Ste. C-4, in Chandler on Tuesday through Thursday from 12 to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 12 to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 8 p.m. Visit Sunny SnoBalls on Facebook or call 480.786.9582 for more information.
