TREAT YOUR VALENTINE... OR YOURSELF!

Love What's Near

I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn—I find myself caught between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday (OK yes, deep down I do love it though!) and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season.

To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere a little in between.

We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we highlight what’s to love in your local community.

In this issue, we dive into the more than 111-year history of the iconic San Marcos Resort and talk to golf phenom—and Hamilton High School grad!—Mason Andersen. We talk about how Haia Studio is redefining women’s wellness here, Myranda Fine Jewelry’s new showroom, the Chandler Symphony Orchestra, and Ocotillo Artists Group. These people and businesses are just a few of the reasons why Chandler is so great.

“Love local” means your local businesses and those in your community—but it also means loving what is nearby. Those under your own roof included. So grab a coffee at your favorite local spot and head home for a game night with the family. Or order a meal to go from your favorite local restaurant and indulge with a movie night in.

We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told on these pages month after month.

Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like.

Our hope is that we inspire you to love it—as well as our local community—just a bit more than you did before.

Happy February!

Yours,

February 2025

WINNING DRIVE

Hamilton High School Alum Mason Andersen’s Embracement of Underdog Status Fuels Success as PGA Tour Golfer

Being underestimated is nothing new for Mason Andersen.  For much of the Arizona native’s golfing life, he’s flown off and under the competition radar, overshadowed by teammates or the field.

“Pro golf is interesting. It’s not like football when you’re playing one team; you’re playing 150 teams.”

“I was a good player but not crazy good,” recalls Andersen, a 2017 Hamilton High School alum. “I’ve been an underdog my entire life. No one except for my good friends were betting on me. I was never the number one guy on the team. I was always overlooked, and I’ve always used that to fuel me.”

And that sparked Andersen’s hot performance and impressive season on the Korn Ferry Tour, which culminated in him earning his PGA Tour card in 2024.

“Pro golf is interesting. It’s not like football when you’re playing one team; you’re playing 150 teams,” he says. “And when you win, it’s outstanding.”

But the rush of victory on the greens wasn’t enough to win him over. At first, anyway.

Andersen spent his childhood in Queen Creek and was always athletic, playing football as a kid. He even wrestled for a year.

His father enjoyed golf, and when Andersen was 12, he picked up a club for the first time.

“My dad liked playing golf but he’s horrible,” Andersen says. “My dad was always my best friend, and I wanted to do what he did.”

Andersen was a natural. He won the first nine-hole event he participated in. Yet it wasn’t for him.

“I was just a young kid. Golf wasn’t super cool at the time and everyone’s playing football,” he recalls. “You want to be with your buddies.”

But the appeal of football waned. At 14, Andersen returned to golf, and this time, it stuck. On weekends, holidays, and during the summer, his father would drop him off at the golf course, where he’d spend eight hours working on his craft.

“I got addicted to it,” says Andersen, who spent his high school years living across the street from the Bear Creek Golf Course.

He mostly went unnoticed by college recruiters. But when he was a senior at Hamilton, Andersen qualified for the U.S. Open. That turned heads and caught the attention of Arizona State University (ASU), home of one of the top golf programs in the nation.

“By that time, I started becoming a really good golfer, so when I came to ASU, I felt like I belonged,” Andersen says.

When he graduated, however, Andersen found himself jobless as a professional.

“I turned pro, had nothing to play in, and no money,” he says. “It was tough at first—a lot was up in the air. But I was used to being an underdog.”

However, the tide would turn. Andersen performed well in tournaments and began to earn high dollars. Around the same time, custom golf equipment and accessories manufacturer PXG— Parsons Xtreme Golf—called Andersen, wanting to have him represent their brand and be part of their professional roster.

“They wanted to support me before I had status. They normally don't do that, but they saw something in me and decided to take a chance,” he says.

Andersen also talks about those who mentored him, like PGA golfer Matt McCarty, who played a role in his success.

“The people who are by your side every step of the way are the most important people in your life, not the people who are after you now,” Andersen says.

Andersen has established himself among the crop of talented young golfers making an impression. However, his eye isn’t always on his prize; it’s on the future of the sport and the next generations that aim to walk the path he’s paved. And he pays it forward by giving them pointers, advice, and answers to any questions they have about specific techniques or the general life of a golf professional.

“I turned pro, had nothing to play in, and no money. It was tough at first—a lot was up in the air. But I was used to being an underdog …”

“I see kids golfing and the passion they have for the game was the same passion I had at that age,” Andersen says. “Helping the younger generation is what I find rewarding.”

In the future, Andersen sees himself maintaining being at the top of his game and working hard to improve continuously, as if still trying to make skeptics believers.

“Is it something that defines you? Not at all. But from a competitive standpoint, you’re always trying to win,” he says. “I’m the underdog that no one knows about.”

He still plays golf with his dad once a week, and while Andersen’s game has changed, some things haven’t.

“He’s still terrible,” Andersen says with a laugh. “But with golf, all that really matters is that you’re having fun with it, and my dad is having a blast.”

A Look Back

Exploring and Celebrating 111 Years of Timeless Elegance and Warm Hospitality at San Marcos Resort

“This place is more than just a resort—it’s a gathering spot for the community, a part of Chandler’s story, and a place where cherished memories are made.”

Step back in time and experience the charm of Chandler’s beloved San Marcos Resort—a true Arizona treasure that has been enchanting visitors for more than 111 years. This iconic resort, which was the first in the state, is a stunning blend of rich history, breathtaking architecture, and modern luxury, offering a warm invitation to all who walk through its doors.

Since its grand opening in 1913, the San Marcos has been the go-to desert getaway for those seeking an oasis of comfort and elegance. Founded by Dr. A.J. Chandler, the visionary behind the city itself, the resort was built as a haven of sophistication, designed to transport guests into a world of relaxation and charm. With its signature mission-style architecture, lush gardens, and a golf course that remains one of Arizona's finest, the San Marcos quickly set the standard for luxury in the Southwest and played a key role in shaping Chandler’s identity as a destination city.

“We’re so excited to celebrate this incredible milestone and share the history of the San Marcos with both new and returning guests,” says Jill Turski, director of sales and

marketing. “This place is more than just a resort—it’s a gathering spot for the community, a part of Chandler’s story, and a place where cherished memories are made.”

A LEGACY OF LUXURY AND MODERN COMFORT

Over the decades, the San Marcos Resort has attracted a colorful mix of Hollywood stars, political figures, and business moguls, all drawn to its peaceful ambiance, stellar service, and historic charm. From the stunning Spanish-inspired architecture to the sweeping views of the lush golf course, every corner of the resort exudes timeless elegance.

But it’s not just about history—the San Marcos is a modern oasis, too. In recent years, the resort has undergone major renovations, with more than $10 million invested into the property. These updates blend the resort’s historic allure with the comforts of today, from a redesigned lobby to newly refreshed guest rooms and cozy private cabanas by the pool. Guests can relax in style while enjoying the soothing backdrop of this storied destination.

“We wanted to give our guests a chance to truly experience the history of the resort—to feel the magic that has drawn so many people here over the years.”

One of the resort’s crown jewels is its golf course, Arizona’s first to feature grass greens. Whether you're an avid golfer or simply enjoying a leisurely afternoon, the course offers a perfect setting for recreation and relaxation. The resort’s scenic courtyards and historic ballroom are also sought-after venues for everything from weddings to corporate retreats, making it a versatile choice for any occasion.

HONORING THE PAST, EMBRACING THE FUTURE

As the San Marcos marks its 111th anniversary, the resort continues to celebrate its past while looking forward to an exciting future. Last year, the resort hosted a series of special events that invited both guests and locals to dive deep into its fascinating history and enjoy unique experiences at this beloved property.

“We wanted to give our guests a chance to truly experience the history of the resort—to feel the magic that has drawn so many people here over the years,” Turski says. “Whether they attended one of our anniversary celebrations or enjoyed a peaceful stay, we hope everyone left with a deeper connection to the San Marcos.”

For the residents of Chandler, the San Marcos has always been more than just a luxury destination. Dr. Chandler’s vision for the resort was to create a gathering place that would help shape the community, and that vision still resonates today. With its prime location and inviting atmosphere, the San Marcos is a true heart of Downtown Chandler, where locals and visitors can come together to make new memories.

A WARM WELCOME AWAITS

As the San Marcos looks ahead, there’s no shortage of exciting plans on the horizon. This year, the resort will be expanding its seasonal events, offering more opportunities for guests to enjoy special holiday celebrations, family-friendly brunches, and even more lively gatherings.

The resort’s commitment to community is also unwavering. From holiday tree lightings to live music in the courtyards, the San Marcos continues to host fun events that bring people together. Through partnerships with Chandler’s Downtown district, the resort is dedicated to creating experiences that everyone, both locals and visitors, can enjoy.

So whether you’re a longtime guest or this is your first visit, the San Marcos Resort promises an unforgettable experience that blends history, luxury, and a warm sense of community. As Arizona’s first resort, it’s not just a symbol of the past but a living, breathing part of the state’s hospitality legacy.

Historic Fort Snelling
Haia Studio is Redefining Women's Wellness in Chandler
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

When Carolina Gabilondo talks about movement, her eyes light up with the kind of passion that only comes from lived experience.

"We're not just here to exercise," she says, gesturing around Haia Studio's light-filled space in Chandler. "We're here to remember what it feels like to truly inhabit our bodies."

As someone who has spent 15 years helping women reconnect with their strength, Gabilondo knows a thing or two about the transformative power of embodied movement. But it wasn't until she faced her own series of life-altering challenges that she fully understood just how essential these practices could be.

"Life has a way of teaching you exactly what you need to learn," she says, smiling and recounting the period that would ultimately inspire Haia Studio's creation.

In 2020, Gabilondo found herself navigating new motherhood during the isolation of COVID-19. Then, 20 months later, pregnant with her second child, she faced a pregnancy so challenging that it left her bedridden for nine months.

"I could barely keep water down," she recalls. "But the practices I'd developed over years of teaching became my lifeline."

It was during this intense period that the vision for Haia Studio crystallized.

"Women today are carrying so much," Gabilondo explains. "We're mothers, professionals, partners, community leaders— and we're often doing it all while running on empty."

Her voice carries the warmth of someone who deeply understands this reality.

Haia Studio's offerings reflect this understanding. The space feels more like a sanctuary than a traditional fitness studio, offering three distinct class experiences: Pilates Cardio for those seeking energizing movement, Pilates Sculpt and Strength for building strength and stability, and Core Restore for postpartum healing. Each class is thoughtfully crafted to help women build both physical strength and inner resilience.

IS ABOUT SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES THAT HONOR WHERE EACH WOMAN IS IN HER JOURNEY."

"THIS

—CAROLINA GABILONDO

But what truly sets Haia apart is its approach to postpartum women and those seeking to rebuild their connection with their bodies.

"We're not interested in quick fixes or pushing through pain," Gabilondo emphasizes. "This is about sustainable practices that honor where each woman is in her journey."

The studio's small class sizes allow for personalized attention—a crucial element in helping women rediscover their body's wisdom.

"It's amazing to watch women realize they can be both strong and gentle with themselves," Gabilondo shares. "That's when the real transformation begins."

This philosophy is clearly resonating with Chandler's community. Women come to

Haia, located at 2577 W. Queen Creek Road in Downtown Ocotillo, not just for the physical benefits, but for the sense of renewal they find here.

"We're creating a space where women can pour some of that endless energy they give to others back into themselves," Gabilondo explains. "Because when women learn to fill their own cups first, everyone benefits."

As Haia Studio establishes itself as a cornerstone of wellness in Chandler, it's offering something rare in today's fast-paced world: permission to slow down, tune in, and move with intention.

"Sometimes," Gabilondo says with a knowing smile, "the most revolutionary act is simply coming home to yourself."

Myranda Fine Jewelry's Stunning New Showroom
ARTICLE BY GRETCHEN PAHIA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Valentine's Day spending is expected to continue to increase this year, as consumers prioritize spending on their loved ones. One great way you can spend this year is to show some local love, spending your dollars with local businesses.

In Chandler, there are several great locally owned spots, including one that specializes in one of the most sought-after gifts this time of year—jewelry. Myranda North Molina has more than 25 years of experience in the jewelry industry and is the founder and creative director of Myranda Fine Jewelry. At just 12 years old, she crafted and sold her first piece of jewelry, which led to a lifelong dedication to jewelry design and craftsmanship.

Now the sought-after designer has a new showroom at 5055 W. Ray Road. Like her jewelry, she designed it with careful thought and planning.

“I want customers to walk into our showroom feeling like they are taking a trip to Paris, where timeless designs meet modern charm,” she explains.

In fact, it was a recent trip to Paris where Myranda celebrated her 40th birthday that truly inspired the new decor. From the Parisinspired carpet with sparkles to the wallpaper lining the store, her wish is for all customers to feel like they are transported to a beautiful Parisian boutique.

The showroom is a space where customers can browse her stunning collection of custom-designed jewelry pieces in person. The romantic atmosphere invites you to slow down and enjoy the visual draw of the creations. Whether you are selecting a perfect piece of jewelry or just taking in the sights, Myranda is hoping this is more than just a store for consumers—she wants it to be a special experience, and one with a special European flair.

One of the wonderful reasons people shop with Myranda is that there isn’t just one thing that she specializes in.

“We are your one-stop shop,” she explains. “Also, we are one of the top buyers in the world for estate jewelry. That means if you don’t want it, we want to buy it.”

The jewelry destination offers everything from custom engagement rings to heirloom recreations to jewelry repairs and cleaning. Each piece is crafted in-house with exceptional attention to detail, ensuring quality and uniqueness.

“You are not just another transaction for us. You are family. Every monumental moment and every small moment you are celebrating, we are here with you through the highs and the lows, no matter what your situation is.”

“We participate as much as we can in the city of Chandler events. They have been very supportive of our orchestra.”

Chandler Symphony Orchestra

Concerts, Community Partnerships, and a Youth Program

Since it was formed in 1993, Chandler Symphony Orchestra has proudly served the Chandler community by performing a series of classical concerts to the public, all at no charge.

As Executive Director Pam Hahn notes, the orchestra is made up of anywhere from 80 to 100 professionally trained musicians who volunteer their time and talents.

In addition to the five symphonic concerts and three chamber music concerts that are performed each year, Hahn says the orchestra is also devoted to its many community partnerships and its youth program.

“We participate as much as we can in the city of Chandler events,” she says. “They have been very supportive of our orchestra, so we do our darnedest to get out there.”

For example, in February, the orchestra is part of the Chandler Innovation Fair.

“We have an educational booth at the fair where kids come and learn about making sounds and how we hear,” Hahn says. “We also teach the children how to make batons and we teach them how to conduct.”

In 2023, members of the Chandler Symphony Orchestra took part in the city’s Parade of Lights.

“Then in December, it’s all about music. We have had a longtime, 15-year partnership with the Southwest Youth Ballet Theatre to perform live music for The Nutcracker ballet,” Hahn says. “We are also very excited to have performed The Nutcracker in December with the Phoenix Ballet Company. We took the Chandler Symphony Orchestra to Downtown Phoenix!”

The orchestra’s annual youth competition for musicians in grades seventh through 12th is also a highlight for Hahn and the rest of the orchestra.

“They are amazing. They are just so good,” she says. “The first-place winner gets to come to the rehearsals and then play with the orchestra during our fall concert, which is a great experience for all of us.”

A THRIVING HUB FOR LOCAL CREATIVITY

OCOTILLO ARTISTS GROUP

Nestled in the heart of Ocotillo, the Ocotillo Artists Group (OAG) is a vibrant community of almost 50 artists representing a broad spectrum of artistic mediums. Founded in 2019 by

pop-up events throughout the year, creating opportunities to connect with the community.”

One such event was the group’s eighth juried fine art and craft show,

“THE ORGANIZATION HOSTS JURIED ART SHOWS AND POP-UP EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR."

ceramic artist and longtime Chandler resident Sandy Ashbaugh, the group was established with three primary goals—to showcase the diverse artwork of local artisans, to create sales opportunities for themselves as “art-preneurs,” and to reach a wider audience of art enthusiasts.

In almost six years, the organization has grown significantly, becoming a cornerstone of the visual arts scene in Chandler. The artists of OAG work in a wide array of two-dimensional and three-dimensional mediums, including ceramics, textiles, fused glass, quilts, stone, metal, oil paintings, acrylics, drawing, photography, and more. This diversity ensures that OAG has something to offer for artists and art lovers alike.

“In addition to valuing creativity and artistic expression, our members actively support each other in their professional pursuits through this network,” Ashbaugh says. “The organization hosts juried art shows and

recently held in Downtown Ocotillo. Open to members and other local artists, the one-day outdoor show featured live music and food and beverages from nearby restaurants, coffeehouses, and wine bars. This lively atmosphere drew art lovers from across the region to experience unique, handmade pieces and meet the talented artists behind them.

Another notable event took place last October, when many OAG artists participated in the Downtown Chandler Art Walk Series. This event offered artists a chance to connect with shoppers seeking one-of-a-kind creations and fostered meaningful interactions between creators and their audiences.

Expanding their reach beyond in-person events, OAG hosted its first Facebook Live Studio Art Sale last September. The virtual event was a success, allowing artists to showcase their work to shoppers from the comfort of their homes.

Ashbaugh highlights this as an example of how the group adapts to new platforms to connect with a broader audience.

The Ocotillo Artists Group is open to visual artists working in all mediums, as well as patrons seeking artistic inspiration. Membership offers access to regular meetings and various events throughout the year. Prospective members can apply through the group’s website.

Ashbaugh and the OAG members express deep gratitude for the ongoing support from the local community. Their success demonstrates how a shared passion for the arts can unite individuals and enrich the cultural landscape of Chandler and beyond.

The artists are also grateful for the encouragement, knowledge, and friendships they have experienced as members.

“I love the camaraderie among this group of great artists,” says Crystal Dennis, who has been a member for more than a year. “Learning about each artist’s medium and process is always engaging, and the business savvy shared among the group is a valuable resource.”

Carol McDonald, who has been a member for five years, says she has enjoyed seeing the evolution of the club and the members who are part of it.

“It’s amazing how we’ve grown professionally in such a short time. I love that we have such a variety of talented artists, and we truly learn from each other,” she says. “For artists looking to take their art to the next level, this is the place to come to!”

Building the Perfect Bouquet

Valentine’s Day can be celebrated in many ways. Some people choose to go out for dinner and a movie, others hire a private chef for a romantic meal at home, some buy chocolates and find a fun activity in town, and some couples go out of town for an exciting getaway! One Valentine’s Day staple is giving a bouquet of flowers to someone special. Flowers are the gift that say I love you and can be given to your spouse, children, and mom. As a child, my father always got me roses on Valentine’s Day until I met my husband and he took over the tradition. A bouquet of flowers can say many things as each flower has a different meaning. If you’re wanting to say something special to the ones you love this Valentine’s Day, take a look at our list of three popular flowers, what they mean, and what flowers to pair them with.

Roses

LOVE & ROMANCE

Roses are by far the most popular flower to give on Valentine’s Day. They are beautiful by themselves or you can add Baby’s Breath to enhance the bouquet. These two make a romantic bouquet and are the perfect flowers to give to someone special.

Lilies

PURITY & FERTILITY

Lilies come in a variety of colors and are eye-catching! For a softer looking bouquet, pair your lilies with carnations. These two combined are fun and heartwarming and are a great gift for anyone.

Tulips

PERFECT FOR DEEP LOVE

A bouquet of tulips will brighten any space! Adding some Ranunculus, also known as buttercup, will complement the tulips wonderfully. These flowers have a refreshing look that will decorate any home beautifully in a crystal vase.
