Home Sweet Home

In mid-2023, I had a flood in my house. In the middle of the night (isn't that how it always happens?!), a water line under my sink burst, and when I woke up for the day, there was ankle-deep water throughout. You can imagine what came next—gutting everything, opening walls, plastic sheets hanging from the ceilings, no kitchen, and no floors. It took a year to put back together—and we are still not completely finished.

My experience—everything in chaos, boxed up, and my family lived in a rental locale for several months— made me realize how much my home grounded me.

I realized that the word "home" has so much contained within its four letters. Home is our base. It's where we can let our guard down and be ourselves, relax and recharge, and start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable.

As we began to work on this issue, our Home Issue, we began to think about what makes homes special to our readers. We reached out to those in our community who help make our spaces reflections of ourselves. Of course that includes design, so we featured the stunning home from Matt and Kelly Segerstrom of Modern Splendor Homes. We also spoke with Lisa Ryan Whyte of Whyte House Real Estate and Interior Design, who showed us great splurge vs. save options so that you can recreate that story's showcased look on various budgets.

We also peek in on the The TomKat Shoppe, Downtown Ocotillo's stunning new curated home and gift store, and checked in with our home partners who shared unique industry insights.

We feel like the lucky ones as we had the chance to learn more about the businesses and individuals who comprise this city, and we hope the small lens into them brings people in this community together.

As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you'll feel encouraged, inspired by, and connected to the people around you—in your city, neighborhood, and, most of all, your home.

For me, I'm mostly on to decorating now (anyone want to help with furniture and decor selections?!), but what I've learned most through this process is that "home" to me is where my family is—even if living among boxes upon boxes brought hours of "WHERE did you pack my favorite [insert each person's item here!]" as someone scrambled for an item they wanted!

Yours,

MICHELLE

Bold & Elegant

In the heart of the East Valley, a striking new home redefines modern luxury with its bold, moody aesthetic. Designed by AJ Design Studio and built by Matt and Kelly Segerstrom of Modern Splendor Homes, with Brian Padilla as the project manager, this custom residence embraces deep tones, rich textures, and dramatic contrasts to create an elegant yet inviting atmosphere.

The #MakeItMoody project proves that dark, sophisticated design can be both timeless and livable. From the moment you step inside, the home captivates with its rich color palette, luxurious materials, and thoughtfully designed spaces that seamlessly balance drama and warmth.

A VISION IN MOODY ELEGANCE

“The #MakeItMoody aesthetic is characterized by a bold, dramatic, and atmospheric design approach,” says Kelly. “This home is a perfect blend of modern minimalism, luxury, and cultural influences, resulting in a space that is both elegant and personal.”

Throughout the home, a carefully curated palette of deep hues—charcoal, espresso, and midnight blue—sets a striking backdrop for plush furnishings, metallic accents, and statement lighting. Clean architectural lines and open layouts ensure that the darker tones never feel heavy, while natural light filters through expansive glass panels, softening the overall ambiance.

The bold design choices create a rich, immersive environment that feels simultaneously high-end and comfortable. Deeply pigmented walls contrast with sleek stone countertops, while textured elements such as leather, wood, and brushed metal add depth and sophistication.

A DESIGN THAT TELLS A STORY

One of the most compelling aspects of the #MakeItMoody home is its seamless balance of bold design elements with meaningful, artistic touches.

“We wanted this space to reflect not only sophistication but also the homeowner’s personality,” says Kelly. A striking "Om" artwork anchors the living space, accompanied by carefully curated sculptures and metallic finishes that add depth and character. The result is a home that is not only visually stunning but also deeply personal.

The home’s indoor-outdoor connection is another standout feature. Floor-to-ceiling glass panels open to the surrounding landscape, bringing in natural elements and enhancing the warm, earthy undertones of the interior. This seamless integration with nature allows the home to feel expansive and airy, despite its moody palette.

Luxurious materials—stone, textured surfaces, and brushed metal—add layers of refinement, creating an environment that feels both cozy and high-end. The home’s lighting design

plays a key role in enhancing its moody aesthetic, with layered fixtures that create warmth and depth.

From a stunning catwalk to intricate custom metalwork, the #MakeItMoody home is filled with design details that make it a work of livable art.

“The unique metalwork, bold color choices, and the open living space are some of the standout features of this home,” Kelly says.

The kitchen is a showpiece of modern functionality and a statement chandelier in the dining area adds a touch of oldworld glamour, while the master suite offers a tranquil escape, wrapped in deep tones with luxurious layered textures.

The #MakeItMoody project is a testament to the power of fearless design. By embracing dramatic contrasts, layered lighting, and rich textures, the home is both bold and deeply inviting.

“Every detail was thoughtfully designed to create a space that feels dramatic yet livable,” Kelly concludes.

Splurge vs. Save

Design Finds to Elevate Your Home at Any Price Point

Let’s be honest, creating a home that truly reflects your style can feel like an endless pursuit. But fear not, fellow design enthusiasts! You don’t need to break the bank to achieve a sophisticated and stylish space. The key lies in a clever combination of high-end splurges and budget-friendly finds.

Lisa Ryan Whyte of Whyte House Real Estate and Interior Design loves to incorporate the “splurge vs. save” philosophy when it comes to home décor. Her favorite tip for making a home look fabulous?

“It comes down to a mix of shopping retail, thrift, or consignment stores, and even Facebook marketplace,” she says, advising to steer clear of selecting pieces that are too matchy-matchy.

Whyte shares that when you incorporate complementary pieces, the overall look feels more curated and well-designed, no matter the price.

Perhaps you’re not sure where to best spend your design dollars.

“When you’re building a space and a room, I really find it important to buy a sofa that looks good and is comfortable,” Whyte says. “It’s the place you want to take a Sunday afternoon nap. That’s one place where I say to splurge.”

Now, let’s talk about the “saves.” This is where the magic happens! Affordable finds like vintage frames, thrifted art prints, and DIY projects fill in the gaps, adding personality and depth to your curated collection.

Here, Whyte shares some of her favorite pieces from this gorgeous living space—each with a splurge and save option.

Are there specific financial strategies or tools that can help make the transition between selling and buying smoother?

Strok Owner/Broker, Ocotillo Home Lending OcotilloHomeLending.com

“If you’re looking to sell your home and purchase another, review your overall financial situation to determine what you can qualify for and how much down payment you will need. To be competitive in this market, it’s best to make an offer that’s not contingent on the sale of your current home. If you need to access the equity for the down payment, you can obtain a Home Equity Loan to tap into it, allowing you to submit an offer that is not contingent on the sale.”

What are the most cost-effective design updates or staging tips to make my home more appealing to buyers and increase its resale value?

Owner, Whyte House Real Estate + Interior Design

WhyteHouse.co

“Refreshing your walls with paint in a neutral tone (warm whites or soft beige) is one of the easiest and cost-effective ways to update your home for buyers.  Lighting can be so impactful—replace your outdated fixtures with modern, affordable lighting to create an inviting atmosphere. Updated kitchen and bath fixtures will appeal to buyers. Swap out old cabinet hardware with modern knobs, replace outdated faucets, and if budget allows, paint cabinets for a fresh look.”

What trends are you seeing in the local real estate market right now?

Cory Whyte

Whyte House Real Estate + Design

WhyteHouse.co

“The housing market’s spring season benefits sellers through May, but activity depends on mortgage rates. While demand is growing more slowly than last year, supply is rising faster. In a market with increasing inventory, pricing and presentation are key to selling a home. Conversely, buyers will face competition for move-in-ready homes priced correctly, while those willing to invest sweat equity are in a strong position to negotiate. With over 20 years in Arizona real estate, we’ve seen how quickly trends change—highlighting the importance of working with a full-time REALTOR for your real estate needs.”

What are the biggest challenges in the home selling process that I should prepare for?

Amy Lines

Associate Broker, Keller Williams Realty East Valley NextPhase.RealEstate

“The Chandler real estate market is the strongest of all major cities in the Valley. But the reality is that only about 75% of homes that hit the market actually sell. Therefore, it is imperative for homeowners to properly prepare their home prior to listing. Spending the time to deep clean, declutter, and do simple updates such as paint, lighting, door hardware, and landscaping can be the difference between a successful sale or a frustrating experience!”

Is this a buyer’s or seller’s market, and how can I take advantage of it?

Mindy Jones

Owner | Associate Broker & Realtor, Amy Jones Group at Real Broker AmyJonesGroup.com

“Chandler’s strong seller’s market means that homes with standout features, proper pricing, and great marketing are commanding top dollar. With limited supply, sellers who prepare well will see the biggest returns. Buyers can stand out by writing clean offers, limiting concessions, and moving quickly. While bidding wars aren’t as intense, highly desirable homes still move fast. Knowing when to negotiate and when to go all in takes expert insight—strategy matters more than ever!”

The Chandler Fire Department’s Crew Welcomes More Than a Dozen New (and Cute!) Additions

Last year was a big year for the Chandler Fire Department, as 18 of their firefighters welcomed 19 new bundles of joy.

Firefighter Penni Cyrus welcomed her son, Kade, in February 2024. Firefighter Harley Davis celebrated the birth of his daughter, Holland, in the same month. Captain Victor Bagayas also had a special February arrival with his daughter, Andrea.

Fast-forward to April and firefighter Cody Stewart became a proud father to his son, Clutch. Captain Donaldo Lopez also celebrated in April with the birth of his daughter, Dorothy. Shortly after, firefighter Caleb Newman welcomed his daughter, Georgia, in May. Firefighter Mitch Wehrli had double the joy in May with the birth of his sons, Bowen and Briggs.

Nineteen firefighters welcomed children in 2024 (four are not pictured).
“These little ones represent the next generation of strength and service for the Chandler community.”

Moving into the summer months, engineer Jack Bernard celebrated the arrival of his daughter, Jersey, in June. Firefighter Trent McDaniel then welcomed his daughter, Millie, in July. And firefighter Blake Kemp also had a July blessing with the birth of his daughter, Hazel. Firefighter Mikey Johansson celebrated the birth of his daughter, Haven, in August. Engineer Scott Graves also had a special August arrival with his daughter, Clementine. As fall and winter came, so did the additions to the crew. Firefighter Jonah O'Hare welcomed his daughter, Betty, in October. Firefighter Garrett Pratt also celebrated the birth of his daughter, Lucy, in the same month. Firefighter Brady Wetch became a proud father to his daughter, Mia, in November. Finally, engineer Chris Morales closed out the year with the birth of his daughter, Kelsey, in December. (Two other babies arrived in 2024 but they and their parents were camera shy.)

“The Chandler Fire Department is a family and the parents who welcomed babies into their homes are a reminder of the deep connections we share both in the firehouse and at home,” says Chandler Fire Chief Tom Dwiggins about the new additions. “These little ones represent the next generation of strength and service for the Chandler community. We couldn’t be happier for our firefighters and their families as they share this incredible journey of parenthood together."

INNOVATION MEETS

ARTISTRY

ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN

Kitchen design has entered a transformative era, where innovation meets artistry to create spaces that are not only functional but also personal and sustainable. With advancements in technology, materials and craftsmanship, today’s kitchens are tailored to meet the evolving needs and tastes of homeowners.

According to interior designer Laura McCroskey, kitchens today are about more than just cooking—they’re an expression of personal lifestyle.

“Kitchen design has entered an exciting time where the possibilities feel limitless,” says McCroskey. “For me, the design process starts before lines are ever drawn on a construction document. I believe in creating spaces that enhance life, both functionally and aesthetically. The design process begins with a discussion about what a space needs to do, and what aesthetic will bring a spark to the homeowner. I also firmly believe that when designing a kitchen, one should walk out a recipe to

Technology, sustainability and customization are driving the revolution in kitchen design. Advanced appliances are at the forefront, enhancing convenience while aligning with a growing emphasis on eco-friendliness.

make sure everything is in the right place to suit one’s lifestyle. Cooking zones are imperative to a well-designed kitchen.”

Modern kitchens emphasize zoning, or the creation of dedicated areas for preparation, cooking and storage, to enhance workflow and functionality. These zones not only improve efficiency but also contribute to a cohesive and visually appealing aesthetic.

Cutting-edge rendering software, utilizing technology similar to that used in gaming, allows homeowners to visualize their dream kitchens in hyper-realistic detail. While these tools inspire creativity, McCroskey advises balancing ambitious

“From vacuum-sealing drawers that preserve food and reduce waste to smart appliances controlled by your phone, the emphasis is on efficiency and sustainability. Functional storage built seamlessly into marble countertops and oversized workstation sinks are making daily tasks easier and more enjoyable. Thoughtful features like composting compartments and advanced food preservation methods reflect a broader effort to minimize waste and reduce environmental impact.”

Custom cabinetry that maximizes every inch of space minimizes waste while optimizing functionality.

“Forget the limits of traditional cabinetry. Blind corners, tiny nooks and hidden areas are now designed to maximize storage. Automated drawers and pop-up outlets

are becoming increasingly common, marrying convenience with sleek aesthetics.”

Design trends have also evolved, becoming more flexible to reflect individual tastes.

“While white kitchens remain timeless and black adds drama, bleached woods continue to be popular. Style trends are no longer as rigid—whether you prefer modern, transitional, or traditional designs, you can create a kitchen tailored to your unique vision. There’s no limit to what you can achieve with today’s tools and technologies. The goal is to create spaces that resonate deeply with the people who live in them.”

The kitchen is the heart of every home and represents a space of endless possibility. Whether your aesthetic leans modern, farmhouse or somewhere in between, the tools and technologies available today make it easier than ever to bring your vision to life.

Fashion Through the Eyes of a Child

In the eyes of a child, new clothes take on a special meaning when it’s the first day of school. Looking your best and feeling confident can be important.

Several children are showing off what they picked to wear that first school day at Runway for Hope, a fashion show and luncheon sponsored by Assistance League of East Valley on March 1. The children will twirl down the runway in new uniforms, T-shirts, and pants like those provided by the organization each year.

About 7,000 elementary school children receive new clothing from Assistance League of East Valley during the year, at special dressing events at Target and at distributions of new uniforms each fall. Many of the children have never had new clothing, according to the school resource officers who choose them.

“A lot of our kids have to wear hand-me-downs, maybe the same outfits for several days,” says Lianne Merrill, family support specialist. “It affects their self-esteem. Families have lost jobs, or are living in a motel because they are homeless. They are so very grateful for this help.”

The Assistance League Thrift Shop at 2326 N. Alma School in Chandler provides much of the funding, in addition to grants and the annual spring fundraising event.

Fashions also will be presented by Macy’s at the event, which is held at Marriott Phoenix Chandler. Boutique shopping opens at 9:30 a.m., with the fashion show and lunch at noon.
