Around Town CROWNE PLAZA SAN MARCOS GOLF RESORT APPOINTS NEW EXECUTIVE CHEF As the longest standing resort in Arizona, built in 1912, the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort has been offering Old West hospitality, food, beverage and recreation for Valley locals and visitors alike for more than 100 years. In an effort to further expand their food and beverage operations and focus on locally sourced, farm-to-table philosophies, the iconic resort has named Aaron Geister as their new executive chef. Geister will be overseeing all culinary operations for the 249room resort and its two restaurants, AJ’s Cafe and the 1912 Lounge, in addition to the pool bar, special events, in-room dining and the newly renovated Grill 60, serving the property’s on-site 18-hole championship golf course. “Geister was an obvious choice for us to bring on board to lead the culinary team,” says the resort’s General Manager Paul Gibson. “His appreciation for all things local and long-standing presence in the Valley have made him a wonderful fit for our food and beverage program. We’ve already begun making various changes to the menu and look forward to him putting San Marcos on the culinary map.” Originally from Portland, Oregon, Geister’s love of cooking and appreciation for all things local began with his parents utilizing the freshest local ingredients and by age 14 he was in a kitchen and on his way to rising the culinary ranks. A graduate of the Scottsdale Culinary Institute, Geister has been a part of the team for a variety of Arizona restaurants, including Cartwright’s Sonoran Ranch House, Tonto Bar & Grill, Michael DeMaria’s Heirloom and, most recently, Del Frisco’s Restaurant Group before taking the culinary helm at San Marcos. LOCAL HOMEBUILDERS PREPARE FOR INFLUX OF NEW RESIDENTS The East Valley has become a hub for job growth in the Valley of the Sun. According to the City of Chandler's website, more than 5,200 jobs are on the horizon in Chandler alone, due to existing-business expansions and relocations to the area. To prepare for this job growth and ensure that people have places to live, local homebuilders, both single-family and multifamily, have begun to

prepare for the influx. Recently, Maracay Homes debuted 79 new homesites at Sendera Place and also unveiled its Layton Lakes community. Additionally, PB Bell, a leader in multifamily housing and real estate development and management , recently celebrated the grand opening of the second phase of its luxury apartments, Almeria at Ocotillo.

KYRENE ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT OF SUPERINTENDENT DAVID K. SCHAUER After nearly 10 years leading one of the state’s highest performing school districts, Kyrene Superintendent, Dr. David K. Schauer, has announced he will be retiring at the end of the 2015-16 school year. “It has been my great fortune to have worked in the Kyrene School District as a principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent,” Schauer said. Schauer’s comprehensive background and critical knowledge of education, both in administration and in the classroom, made him uniquely qualified to lead one of the state’s most successful school districts, which includes schools in Chandler. During his tenure, Dr. Schauer navigated the District through a period of diminishing state resources, changes in state standards and assessments, and increased competition from other educational institutions. This was an era of projected enrollment decline for the District that was mitigated by providing increased educational choices and aggressively marketing the benefits of a Kyrene education. “I am proud that the performance of the school district has remained at a very high level from student achievement, financial performance and general operations as determined by outside auditors and state agencies,” said Dr. Schauer. “This could not happen without the strong team of leaders that have worked directly with

or those of us not getting away to escape the summer heat, there are many fun things to do right here in town. For starters, why not consider taking a trip to New Orleans by way of Chandler? At the corner of Gilbert Road and Chandler Heights you are in for a culinary experience that will make you feel as if you left Chandler and visited The French Quarter…. even if it’s only for a meal. I’d like to introduce you to a new restaurant in town – Creole Cajun Bistro and the cooking charms of owner, Chef Eric Rachal. He and his wife, Jodie, opened the restaurant this past Valentine’s Day and it already has people traveling across the Valley to enjoy Chef Eric’s authentic Creole and Cajun cooking. Chef Eric's ancestors can be traced back to the 1700s, when many French Canadians relocated to Louisiana. He is blessed to be born into family of both heritages – Creole on his mother’s side and Cajun on his father’s side. Cooking all his life, thanks to Grandma Marcell F. Jacques who taught him how to cook when he was a child, Chef Eric has perfected both styles of cooking.

CULINARY HISTORY

Creole style of cooking originated from city restaurants and Cajun style of cooking originated from the country where folks hunted in the bayous and marshes. In Creole style of cooking they use a dark sauce called roux, remoulade and items that are amandine. The Cajun style of cooking is spicier and items often blackened. Creole cooking uses shrimp and Jambalaya. Cajun’s love using crawfish and alligator in their cooking. With passion being his main ingredient, Chef Eric has combined the two cuisines and creates delicious New Orleans favorites. As Chef Eric 14

Chandler Lifestyle | July 2015

explains he uses the Holy Trinity in his cooking: green bell peppers, onions and celery sautéed together can be found in many of his dishes. COMFORTABLE, CASUAL DINING

The Bistro is quaint and cozy with small tables and booths, a bar that seats nine and an outdoor patio that accommodates 14. There definitely is an atmosphere that spells out "The French Quarter" with New Orleans theme hangings which sets the stage for the cuisine that is yet to be enjoyed. I started my culinary experience with an appetizer of Fried Green Tomatoes which are fried in a homemade Cajun batter and served with remoulade sauce. They were very crispy and very tasty. I also sampled the Fried Alligator and was surprised how “meaty” it was. Fried in the same Cajun batter till crispy, it’s served with a spicy orange sauce. Loved it. Other appetizers include Cajun Onion Strings; Frenched™ Wings in three styles – Hell Fire; Lemon Pepper or Cajun; Fried Pickles, Andouille Sliders; Fried Frog Legs; and Creole Barbecue Shrimp. I thoroughly enjoyed the Andouille, Shrimp and Chicken Etouffee. Etouffee comes from the French word “to smother.” The three are smothered with the dark roux sauce and it’s a slightly spicy vegetable stew with white rice. A trip to New Orleans wouldn’t be right without having crawfish. I must admit, this was a first for me. And, after a short demonstration on how easy they are to eat, I enjoyed every bite. Other entrées include Filé Okra Gumbo; Red Beans and Rice with Andouille Sausage; Creole Jambalaya; Crawfish Mac and Cheese; Shrimp and Grits; Louisiana Seafood Platter and the Bayou Bucket.

Bread Pudding

The Po Boy’s Sandwiches are served on 10” French bread with choices that include Andouille Sausage, Chicken Breast, Roast Beef, Catfish, Tilapia, Shrimp, Shrimp and Oyster and a Bistro Burger that’s served on a large, buttered pretzel bun. A $6.95 Kid’s Menu includes a generous portion of Mac N Cheese, Fish Basket, Red Beans and Rice, Chicken Nuggets or Mac N Cheese Bites for children under 12 years old. Desserts are prepared by his son and Pastry Chef, Eric Jr. His specialties include Chocolate Pecan Pie, Chocolate Mouse with Rum and White Chocolate Mousse with Grand Marnier. The Bread Pudding is an absolute must as well as the Beignets. The Beignets are thin, French-style doughnuts that are square and covered with powdered sugar. They are prepared like those found at Café Du Monde, in New Orleans which is famous for their delicious Beignets. FRESH & AUTHENTIC

Everything is prepared fresh daily. Chef Eric takes pride in his cooking and wants to make sure everything is just right, when serving up generous portions for his diners. “Every dish we serve here is a tribute to my grandma,” explains Chef Eric. “I don’t serve anything I wouldn’t serve my own family.” So plan on making reservations for dinner, or stop in for lunch or a late night snack, and you will be pleasantly surprised at how good Creole and Cajun food can be when prepared the authentic way.

CAMPING MADE EASY Camping, Made Easy

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

T

hese days you don’t have to own an RV, a sleeping bag or a tent to go camping. That’s because campgrounds across the country are giving guests a chance to sleep surrounded by nature – but in a cozy bed with a roof over their heads. From park models to yurts, both campgrounds and campers are embracing new lodging options that offer the convenience and comforts of home – from basic kitchen appliances and linens to cable television and Wi-Fi. Consider them your home away from home in the great outdoors. If you want to think outside of the tent for your next – or first – camping trip, try one of these popular accommodations:

PARK MODELS

On the outside, park models often resemble a compact cabin or cottage, many complete with a front porch perfect for soaking up the campground’s natural beauty. On the inside, they offer up all of the comforts of home. Park models feature smart layouts that maximize every square inch so guests get to enjoy a living room, kitchen, bedroom and full bathroom and, in some cases, a loft. CAMPING CABINS

Perfect for groups big and small, camping cabins come in all varieties and offer something for everyone. Whether you want a 16

Chandler Lifestyle | July 2015

four bedroom luxury escape with sweeping lake views or a compact rustic retreat tucked away in the woods, you’re covered. Camping cabins are also a great option if you’re traveling with a group that includes campers and non-campers. Everyone can enjoy the outdoors together by day, but when the sun goes down your more outdoorsy folks can pop a tent and those who don’t want to rough it can retreat to the comfort of the cabin. RENTAL RV'S

You don’t have to own an RV – or even drive one for that matter – to take advantage of all of the convenient features an RV offers. You can enjoy an efficient kitchen and bath, cozy sleeping spaces, and room to kick back and relax with an already parked rental RV. But be warned – once you try an RV, you might be hooked. There’s a reason they’ve been around for more than 100 years! YURTS

Easily identified by their circular shape, yurts have been used for thousands of years. While the early models were made of felt and wood, modern yurts are made of high-tech materials that create a comfortable, yet sturdy retreat. Perfect for a group seeking an unconventional camping experience, a yurt provides a completely unique take on enjoying the outdoors as well as plenty of space for the gang to spread out.

UNIQUE ACCOMODATIONS

Ever wanted to spend the night in a vintage Airstream? How about a treehouse or caboose? What about a covered wagon or teepee? If you’re the adventurous type, maybe these unique accommodations will give you the nudge you need to give camping a try.

You’ll be surprised by what today’s camping experience has to offer. Want to learn more about these options or are you ready to book your trip? Visit GoCampingAmerica.com/FindPark and click the kinds of accommodations you want to explore.

Swim Team Teaches Skills, Builds Confidence ARTICLE ERICA FORST | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

ith tablets, smartphones, video games, and endless options of other electronic devices distracting kids, as well as the hot, Arizona sun forcing everyone inside most of the summer, finding activities for kids can be a real challenge. Luckily, the City of Chandler Aquatics provides a fun and healthy alternative to the common sedentary options.

SWIM TEAM

The City of Chandler Recreational Swim Team began over 20 years ago. Its goal is to introduce kids into the recreational swim team atmosphere by teaching competitive swimming skills, including stroke refinement, encouraging good sportsmanship, and building swimmers' self-esteem. Last year the team had 654 swimmers, which included swimmers aged five to 18. The group's four teams are the: Arrowhead Dolphins, Arrowhead Sea Lions, Mesquite Groves Sting Rays, and West

18

Chandler Lifestyle | July 2015

Chandler Hammerheads. Swim meets take place on Saturday mornings where the participants swim against other cities and organizations in the area, such as Team Tempe and the Maricopa Marlins. At the meets, ribbons are awarded to swimmers in each heat and at the end of the season, teams compete for bragging rights at the crowd favorite All-City Meet. Heading the summer swim activities is Angela Lorenzo-Clavell. Angela, a Recreation Coordinator II, has been with City of Chandler Aquatics for 17 years. Growing up in the Bronx she swam with the Boys and Girls Club team. She also taught swimming lessons, which eventually led to her coordinating swimming at the Bronx YMCA. A move to Arizona did not quell her desire to stay in aquatics and soon she found the City of Chandler's swim programs. She appreciates the great coaching staff and quality program they have.

A FAMILY AFFAIR

One fan of Chandler's swimming program is Pauline Gray. She has been a team mom for 10 years. This will be the 10th year on the team for daughter, Melanie, 15, and the fifth for younger daughter, Grace, 10. The girls practice four evenings during the week on the Hammerhead swim team at Nozomi Pool in West Chandler and compete at the meets on Saturdays. Pauline says she enjoys the night practices because the later times work great for families with busy schedules. She remembers fondly the wonderful experiences with the teams' coaches over the years. “I have found them to be very caring and willing to work with swimmers of all abilities," she says. "They have helped my daughters develop a love of swimming, and given them lots of great summer memories.” Melanie, who also swims on the Hamilton High School swim team says, “Summer swim team helps me better myself for the upcoming high school swim season." Grace exclaims, "I like swim team and my favorite stroke is free style!" Pauline says that the affordable program is ideal for families and that it creates a great opportunity for siblings of different ages to participate in the same sport. ALL LEVELS OF SWIMMERS

Amy Deahr is another mom who is a big fan of the swim team. Her seven-year-old twin daughters started swimming on the Arrowhead Dolphin's swim team last summer. She read about the swim team in a local magazine and spoke with parents of former swimmers. “They recommended the program because they said the swimmers get more practice and become stronger swimmers fast," she says. "I found this to be true. My girls learned and began perfecting all of their strokes in a short period of time.” Her daughters attended hour-long practices four mornings each week during June and July. Amy was very impressed with the program's level of instruction and that the strokes were broken down into easy to learn steps that the kids could practice and then put together into the final form of the stroke. “The instructors were in the water with the students and gave each child individualize instruction on how they could improve their swimming strokes," she adds. "Instructors were very kind and encouraging and made practices and swim meets very fun and enjoyable.” Though her daughters are twins, they differ when it comes to their favorite strokes. Maren says that her favorite is the butterfly, while Macee prefers the freestyle. I guess it's true what they say-different folks, different strokes. The girls love competing in the meets and are always excited to see if they can beat their own personal bests. Macee's goals include getting faster and stronger this year. Maren also wants to get stronger and hopes to add a lot of first place ribbons to her collection. Staying active, learning to set goals, and developing skills are all important for a child's personal growth. Kids get to see the positive results of their hard work, and the lessons they learn while swimming on the team will last them a lifetime. TRENDS AND STYLES FOR EVERY WARDROBE ARTICLE JACKIE BINSFELD | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

S

ummer has finally arrived and has brought along several new styles. To help navigate these trends, Lisa Looney of KatyBug Faye Boutique has picked some of her favorite pieces.

BOUTIQUE HISTORY

Looney got her start in the fashion industry seven years ago when she wanted to teach her daughter how a business works by making and selling rhinestone sandals. They soon began to offer rhinestone-adorned jeans and t-shirts at in-home parties. Looney then started her own boutique, which has been open for five years. Just two and half years later, KatyBug Faye Boutique opened a second location. Looney is proud that both locations are in Chandler and that they have become a part of the family-oriented community. The boutique seeks to provide stylish pieces to a wide range of ages so that mothers and daughters can shop together. “Our mission is to ensure that every customer leaves KatyBug Faye feeling even better about herself than she did when she entered,” Looney explains. The boutique’s friendly and stylish atmosphere can lift any shopper’s spirits. It is no surprise then that KatyBug Faye Boutique not only has two locations but an online shop, an app, and its own line of clothing.

COLD SHOULDER

The off-the-shoulder trend is big for the summer. This shoulder-baring style not only keeps you cool, but it shows off a little skin without being too exposing.

20

Chandler Lifestyle | July 2015

BOHO

This season is also a chance to showcase your Bohemian side. Embroidery, tie-dye and bell-sleeves are all great options that channel this trend. The spring kimono frenzy has carried over into the summer. Keep this trend alive by throwing a kimono over your outfit if it gets a little chilly at night.

THE MUST-HAVE PIECE

If your closet has room for only one more piece this summer, Looney suggests adding a flowy dress. This hot pink dress is a versatile piece that can take you from day to night. Use it as a cover-up for the pool or add heels and a necklace and you are ready for a date night.

TYING IT IN

No look is complete without accessories. This summer, add a long necklace to make your outfit feel current. You can even mix-and-match your favorite long necklaces to personalize your ensemble. A neutral clutch is also a great piece to have this summer. This clutch would go perfectly with any of the pieces featured here.

SUMMER WHITES

White is always a great color choice for the summer months. Add a few white pieces to your summer wardrobe to keep it crisp and fresh.

Visit KatyBugFaye.com for locations or to shop their online store. You can download the KatyBug Faye App for Apple or Android at the App Store. July 2015 | Chandler Lifestyle

Keep Your Home Safe This Summer STEEL SHIELD SECURITY DOORS: YOUR FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE ARTICLE STEVEN TOTTEN PHOTOGRAPHY BRIDGETTE MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY

W

ith Independence Day right around the corner, summer vacations are on everyone’s mind. But before you start packing the sunscreen and swimsuits, consider this: in July 2013, there were almost 4,000 burglaries in Arizona, according to Arizona Department of Public Safety. In the midst of all the excitement for that trip to Hawaii or Mexico, have you made sure that your home is secure while you’re gone? It’s easy to overlook something simple after you’re en route to the beach. Did I turn the oven off? Did I leave the lamp on? Did I lock the door? Fortunately, there is a solution to that last problem — Steel Shield Security Doors. SAFETY FIRST

Now coming into its eighth year, Steel Shield Security Doors has provided Valley residents with doors and windows that protect your home with style, with 120 designs and 45 colors to choose from. “It’s not like putting security bars on your house that make it look like a jail,” says owner Michael Maher. “They look like a sunscreen. You would never know the difference until you tried to get in. People would never know it was a security item.” It’s clear that Steel Shield Security Doors makes aesthetics a high priority. But as you can guess with the name, making homes secure is their first mission. “Our doors are all heavy-duty and we use 14-gauge or 16-gauge steel,” Maher says. “When we do security screens, they’re made out of woven stainless steel. It’s very strong. The kind you can’t cut with a knife or break with a bat to get through them.” The other plus to Steel Shield's doors and windows is when Arizona reaches its cooler months. Maher says they’re perfect for letting the fresh air in and keeping intruders out. “If homeowners want to leave their front door open and go to bed at night, the door stays locked, nobody comes through it and you can still get your fresh air,” Maher says. During the hot summer months, letting in the fresh air doesn’t happen as often, but the doors are still ideal for keeping your home safe, especially when you and your family are gone for vacation. AVOID BURGLARIES

Maher is a testament to this safety himself. He and his family recently went on vacation to New Jersey, and with the Steel Shield 22

Chandler Lifestyle | July 2015

Security Doors and windows installed throughout his home, he says it was pretty unlikely they would have any kind of break-in. Maher does make it clear that his doors and windows are not impenetrable, but the effort it would take for a burglar to enter would be incredibly cumbersome. “Any screen can be removed, if somebody has the right tools, if they want to make noise and have enough time to do it,” Maher says. “If somebody’s going to be standing there with a circular saw trying to cut my doors and windows, it might look a little suspicious.” MORE INFORMATION

Steel Shield Security Door’s pricing starts at $774 and goes as high as a few thousand, depending on the product. A team member will come to your home, take measurements and bring paint chips to customize your doors and windows perfectly. The process usually takes about four weeks. Chandler Public Library THE BEST SUMMER ENTERTAINMENT IN CHANDLER ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

T

he public library is one of my favorite summer hacks for free movies, music, books, magazines and programs for kids of all ages. You can even download free bestseller e-books from the comfort of your living room. For all this and more, all you need is a Chandler Public Library card and some time to peruse all they have to offer. The library also has free Wi-Fi, study rooms, job seeking help, computer classes, volunteer opportunities and plenty of friendly staff. “Besides being employed by one of the best library systems in Arizona, I love what we have to offer to our community,” says Sandra Mendoza a library assistant who’s worked there for 14 years.

Most of the programs are well attended with group size ranging between 15 to 30 people, depending on available space and supplies. Anything that involves prizes or food tend to be more popular. Many of the teen attendees are regulars at the library, but there are always a few new faces at each event. Mendoza runs most of the programs, with a generous support from her fellow library assistants. “We do occasionally have paid presenters like Joanna from our recent henna program, and volunteer presenters, like Louis Robinson from Robinson Dog Training," says Mendoza. "I am hoping to have teens actually come up with and lead their own programs during the next school year."

SUMMER PROGRAMS

The Chandler Public Library has plenty of free classes for teens including Minecraft, yoga, silkscreen printed t-shirts, design your own superhero logo, puppet making, teen murder mystery, superhero mask window clings and duct tape hero designs. They also offer teen movie nights, book readings for kids and programs for adults, too. “One of my favorite teen programs was when we celebrated Ben Franklin's Birthday by doing Minute to Win It style games based on Ben's inventions,” says Mendoza. “I knew it was a hit when the kids kept wanting to challenge each other to the games even when I'd run out of prizes.” Mendoza tries to run as many programs as possible by the Teen Advisory Council. "Their input was crucial in deciding what presenters to invite to Basha Library for Summer Reading programs," she adds. "They also inspired the Duct Tape Craft program.” 24

VOLUNTEERING

Another great opportunity at the library is the teen volunteer program that accepts children 12 years and up. “I love my volunteers," says Mendoza. "They are a great asset to the library and the community. They bring in new ideas and are very creative." Volunteers must participate in a volunteer overview and orientation at their Chandler library of choice. The overview discusses the Teen Volunteer Handbook, training on the SRP website to practice logging in reading points and they are given a library tour. Volunteer jobs vary, but in the summer teens are needed to man the Summer Reading table, and hand out prizes to those who have complete the reading game board. Other jobs include assisting with craft preparation, searching for holds and shelf-reading. Volunteers do a minimum of two-hour shifts, but they can work multiple days CONTINUED >

per week if the schedule permits. There are no more than two volunteers per shift. “Some of our volunteers end up being library employees when they turn 16,” says Mendoza.

TEEN VOLUNTEER TURNS EMPLOYEE

“Teen Volunteering is extremely important in the library,” says Elisia Simmons, a library assistant. “It connects teens to the community and continues to build their love for the library that will last a lifetime.” Simmons was a library goer as a child, since the downtown location was just a mile from her house. “As I continued to grow up in the library, so did my love and appreciation,” says Simmons. “When I turned 12, I immediately started volunteering, which led to my first job at 16. From there, my work and volunteer experience brought me to where I am today. I absolutely wouldn’t be where I am now in life without teen volunteering. This thought regularly reminds me as I work with teens through programs and volunteer opportunities.” Simmons is a fan of the library for so many reasons. “Our free programs foster creativity, individuality and a love for the library," she says. "There is always something going on!”

LITERACY

In addition to all the fun that can be had at the Chandler Public Libraries, Mendoza points out an important fact. “Libraries continue to play a major role in fostering literacy in our nation and are in a remarkable position to expose children to great quantities of print and meaningful language opportunities," she says. "During summer months, children can continue their reading skills by participating in summer reading programs. Our summer programs seek to attract large numbers of children to the library, a time when reading skills often decline.”

Parting Thoughts

Bringing the Islands to Chandler ARTICLE MYRIAM VALENZUELA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

I

started dancing at the ripe age of four with various styles ranging from modern jazz to Polynesian dance. In 2004, I followed my dreams and opened a fitness-dance studio in Mexico. Soon after my daughter was born, my husband was transferred to the U.S and that's when I started a home-based yoga-dance studio in Maricopa. Eight years later and after my third child was born, we decided to move to Chandler and expand the studio. Having San Carlos, Sonora, a dreamy beach in the Gulf of California, as my hometown, and being passionate for the Hawaiian culture, I wanted to offer the relaxing and soothing ambience of the ocean. With the help of my husband, Aloha Yoga and Hula came to life, with majestic turquoise floors resembling the ocean and huge panoramic murals covering the walls to bring a little piece of paradise to Arizona. As a mother of three and business woman, I know the importance of having a clear and relaxed mind, as well as building healthy and positive energy. I wanted to offer a place for people to come and restore, refresh, renew. A place to find healing, love and acceptance. At my studio you can find that as you make new friendships, create fun memories and experience nurturing love, and much more.

A variety of yoga styles are offered from slow paced and restorative, to fast paced , including the popular five-week beginner yoga series and the 12-week weight-loss program. During the beginner yoga program, you can learn at a very slow and relaxed pace what yoga is all about, including breathing, meditation and proper alignment. In the weightloss program, you learn to restore your nervous system to stop unnecessary cravings and develop proper nutrition for great health, improved mood and natural energy. Traditional Hawaiian dancing is offered for all ages as well as sensual Tahitian dancing. With the language, food, history, foot work and beauty behind the Polynesian culture, you become part of the perpetuation of this exotic and ancient culture that comes to life as living poetry when we perform on stage. All levels are welcome to my Ohana. Kids yoga and summer camp for girls ages 4 to 7 are popular favorites. Kids yoga is full of fun games and stories that encourage positive self-esteem and good health. The Girls Summer Camp is always a big hit as the girls learn a wide variety of dances including modern jazz, belly dance, Hawaiian, Tahitian and Maori, and participate in crafts such as hula paper dolls and flower painting. Camp runs through the month of July. For a great way to spend your summer in Arizona, packed with fun activities that take you out of your environment, come and visit me at Aloha Yoga and Hula and find your Om at the beach! Myriam Valenzuela is the owner and founder of Aloha Yoga and Hula in Chandler and a certified yoga instructor. She has been dancing several styles of jazz, flamenco, belly dance, hula, tahitian and maori for more than 30 years. Learn more at AlohaYogaAndHula.com.
