Editor’s Letter

Fall is here!

OCTOBER 2015

I

t’s the time of year we’ve all been waiting for in Arizona. After months of intense and what felt like never-ending heat, cooler weather has arrived. There is a lot to do around town this month, and if you’re like me, you’ll be relishing every moment outdoors. From biking and hiking to dining on the patio and playing at the park with my kids, I’m looking forward to crisp air and a hot latte.

Most men, including my husband, might argue there are other reasons to love fall. Those reasons include two things: football and beer. Fortunately we’re covering both of these topics this month. We meet a local NFL Arizona Cardinals player and his wife who teamed up to introduce a new potty training system. You’ll enjoy learning the inspiration behind this product and how the couple is giving back to the community. We also celebrate 40 years of Chandler Youth Football Pop Warner, the largest and longest running Chandler-based youth football and cheer organization. With dedicated coaches and committed volunteers, Chandler youth are given the unique opportunity to learn teamwork and sportsmanship and strive to become champions. If you haven’t visited SanTan Brewing Company in Historic Downtown Chandler, you’ll want to give it a try. With locally-brewed beers and a variety of seasonal selections to choose from, along with unique menu offerings, this neighborhood hot spot is quickly becoming a craft beer and craft food destination. For most Chandler residents, excitement is beginning to build around the upcoming football game between rivals Chandler High School and Hamilton High School. Two coaches, two teams of dedicated players and an entire community will soon gather to show support for each of these schools as the battle draws near.

CGCC LATINO AMERICAN GRANT Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) has been awarded a $10,000 grant to produce public programming about Latino history and culture. The Latino Americans: 500 Years of History grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA) will allow community members to learn about the history and culture of Latinos in the United States. Parts of the documentary will be screened with scholar-led discussions following the screenings. Donna Thompson, Humanities and Woman Studies Faculty and grant co-director explains that, “An essential feature of CGCC’s grant events is the focus on creating space for conversation, debate among students, scholars, and community members around significant concerns and issues in our region like immigration, the Dream Act, migrant workers, cultural conflicts and citizenship.” Oral histories from local Latino American artists and other community members will be collected and displayed at CGCC, as well as at Chandler Public Library. Chandler Youth Football Pop Warner Celebrates 40 Years KIDS PLAYING AND CHEERING THEIR WAY TO SUCCESS ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

C

handler Youth Football Pop Warner (CYFPW) is homegrown with roots based in family, academics and competition. Celebrating 40 years in the community, the program is the largest and longest running Chandler-based youth football and cheer organization. Kids involved have learned that it’s more than just a game. It’s a way of life and a path to a successful future. “Kids walk away with a new sense of discipline and the values of working with a team instead of an individual. Being on a team is something that is very important and I think the kids see that,” says Derrick Stinson the deputy commissioner for CYFPW and volunteer head coach of the Rattlers Unlimited. “Regardless if they win or lose, they keep their friendships.” Stinson is responsible for organizing all the players into teams. There are about 350 kids in the program that make up 13 teams. The kids range between the ages of 5 to 15. He stresses that it’s about family first then coaches, meaning it’s more important that the team works well for the families than it does for the coaches. He also schedules games and partners with Chandler Unified School District so the kids can play on the various high school football fields. He commends the partnership they have with both the City of Chandler and school district and appreciates their generosity. FAMILY MATTERS

Stinson began volunteering in 2007 when his eldest son started playing football. Then his second child joined the program and that sealed the deal. Stinson had played football and thought it was good to get involved and give back to the community, while doing something he enjoyed. “It’s really nice to see them go from second grade to high school and then to college. It’s nice to know you had an impact on them,” says Stinson. “More than the sport or competition, it’s about the comradery. We had a kid move to New Jersey and he still calls to say hi.” Primo Castro is the marketing, website and sponsorship director for CYFPW. He, too, is a volunteer who enjoys helping to make the program the best it can be for the kids. His father was a coach and Castro started coaching with him in 1993. He has coached in Hawaii, Texas and Arizona for 16 seasons and has been involved with CYFPW since 2013. He doesn’t currently have kids in the program, but his daughter was in the Pop Warner Spirit Program (cheer) and his son is now playing flag football with another league since Pop Warner is no 12

longer offering it this season. Yet, he believes strongly in the program and continues to donate his time. CHANDLER COMMUNITY

“Community support is at the core of our program’s success," says Castro. "First, our volunteers are largely from the Chandler community, so it’s critical that we attract the best coaches and the most committed volunteers from Chandler each year. Second, we need local Chandler businesses to support our program through sponsorships (tax-deductible donations) so that we can continue to offer the best football and cheer experience to the hundreds of Chandler youths that participate in our program each year.” Castro is proud to provide public recognition for the local businesses that support them, depending on their sponsorship level. “Overall, we are amazed by the support we receive from the Chandler community, our volunteers, local business sponsors and our families,” says Castro. Planning is underway for their 40th anniversary celebration, but their lips are still sealed. “With our recent move to Arizona Pop Warner, we are more excited than ever before about youth football and cheerleading in the Chandler community,” says Castro. They are committed to delivering high quality football and cheer instruction, while providing fun learning experiences that teach life skills and encourage academic excellence. “Our goal is to build champions in scholastics, in competition and in life,” says Castro. Learn more about football and cheer opportunities or find out how to support CYFPW at ChandlerYouthFootball.com.

Head to Head with Football Rivals Chandler Hamilton

Chandler Lifestyle | October 2015

ARTICLE JACKIE BINSFELD | PHOTOGRAPHY BRIDGETTE MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY

T

he month of October holds many occasions: the end of the blistering summer heat, pumpkin-flavored everything and the rush to find the perfect Halloween costume. But for Chandler residents, October is especially important. On October 30th, Chandler High School and Hamilton High School will go head to head for their annual rivalry game. The rivalry started 17 years ago, with the establishment of Hamilton High School. The opening of this school meant an increase in the available academic and athletic opportunities in Chandler, but it also meant that a new football team had entered town. Since then, these sister schools have marked their football fields as battlegrounds.

success. Like Aguano, Belles has had a long history with football, also realizing his love for the sport at the age of 5. The school has had an impressive support system. Belles explains that Hamilton’s success has been a team effort. “It all starts from the top with Superintendent Camille Casteel and her focus on the importance of athletics,” Belles states. He praises Principal Ken James for his support of the school and the talent of the excellent assistant coaches on the three levels of football at Hamilton. Finally, the head coach applauds the athletes. "It is important to have great players to coach within your program," he adds.

THE WOLF PACK

Coach Shaun Aguano of Chandler High School is not an Arizona native, but he is dedicated to the city and his school. Aguano’s interest in football began at the young age of 5, a fact he credits to his family’s interest in sports. Aguano expressed his pride for the Chandler High School Wolves, explaining that they have had an exciting few years. Although Hamilton High School has won the majority of their games against Chandler High School in the past, Aguano says that the last three out of four games were Chandler High School wins. This has intensified the rivalry between the two schools. For Chandler High School, overcoming their rivals was no easy feat. But the school was dedicated to this challenge and had a skilled and motivated team. Aguano explains that Chandler High School Wolves are wonderfully “diverse” and “play with a sense of worth.” These assets certainly helped lead them to victory. THE DOG HOUSE

The Hamilton Huskies are also facing an exciting season. Having previously won 17 times in a row, this game is their chance to regain their status as victor of the schools’ rivalry. Hamilton High School can credit their successful streak to a number of factors. The school’s head coach, Steve Belles, is committed to the team’s

PREPARING FOR BATTLE

As the big game approaches, training tactics remain the same for the schools, but both coaches remark that they see improvements in their players. Belles explains that the team shows more focus while Aguano is impressed by his players’ motivation. He continues to commend the athletes, stating that he sees them “bring more of themselves” when the rivalry game nears. Both schools have the backing of committed coaches, dedicated fans and skilled players. Only on game day will the residents of Chandler be able to see which team emerges as victor: Hamilton, the more consistent winner, or Chandler High School, the team that has made an impressive comeback. A WIN-WIN FOR CHANDLER

Chandler residents, no matter which school they support, should be proud of their city. Aguano explains that the school that wins the rivalry game typically makes their way to the state championship. As Belles remarked, the school district receives an incredible amount of support from the Chandler Unified School District. So although the city will be divided on game night, they can reunite when their city is represented in the state championship.

TAKE A TRIP TO POLLACK TEMPE CINEMAS ARTICLE KATHLEEN BLAIR PHOTOGRAPHY BRIDGETTE MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY

W

ho doesn’t love going to the movies? It's an event the whole family can enjoy. It’s a time when you can escape for 90 minutes into someone else’s adventure as you sit back and enjoy the cinema seating, delicious theater popcorn and amazing digital videos on huge screens. My love for the movies started as a small child when my parents would take me to see Disney movies. Back then, an animated cartoon was shown before the featured film and a Holloway Slo-Poke sucker lasted through the whole movie. Things have definitely changed; in fact, there’s a movie theater in Tempe, on the southeast corner of Elliot and McClintock, that’s taken the discount movie theater into a category all of its own. Michael Pollack, founder of Michael A. Pollack Real Estate Investments, went the extra mile in 1999, when he purchased the center and transformed this former movie theater into Pollack Tempe Cinemas. Not only do you get to enjoy a recent Hollywood second-run movie, but you also step into a world of movie memorabilia. There are Hollywood props; life-size figures of Hollywood’s favorite celebrities, characters and presidents; autographed photos of iconic stars; animated RaggMuffins of Rock, with digitized music playing in the front lobby; a video arcade; an exhibit of the Pirates of the Caribbean; and much, much more. Pollack didn’t miss a beat –in 2014, he invested more than $800,000 for new carpet throughout the cinema, state-of-the-art digital movie projectors, surround sound systems and new reclining theater seats in all of the theaters. TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE

The unbelievable part is there’s no extra charge for the exhibits as this discount movie theater allows you and your family to spend the afternoon or evening watching a movie and enjoying the arcades and displays for as little as $3 a ticket, and only $2 on Tuesdays. Almost everything found in the concession stands, including the “best tasting popcorn,” cost less than other movie theaters. Pollack Tempe Cinemas shows 10 to 12 movies in the six theaters alternating times each day. Pollack built his career in commercial real estate starting in 1973, when he was just out of high school. He transforms tired shopping centers into modern shopping plazas. He has received enormous recognition through the years from the surrounding cities and dignitaries for the revitalization efforts in beautifying, enhancing and enriching the quality of these communities and the lives of those that live there. In fact, he’s been called the “plastic surgeon” of real estate having renovated more than 12 million square feet in his career. “I breathe life back into older buildings and communities,” states Pollack. GIVING BACK

When Pollack purchased Royal Palm Plaza, where the movie theater is located, he had to decide whether to keep the theater or convert the 25,000-square-foot space with sloped floors into a usable retail space. So, his keen, creative business mind started working and he realized this would be the perfect venue to display some of his collectibles that he’s been collecting for over 40 years and share them with the community. One thing led to another, life-like statutes were purchased from around the world and added to his collection. Other movie memorabilia was acquired and the theater became a small museum itself with hundreds of movie props being rotated to complement the featured movies. Pollack finds pleasure in searching for new additions of memorabilia and icons from current movies and adding them to his current collection. His most recent additions are Rocket from the Guardians of the Galaxy movie and Tony Stark from Iron Man. He started collecting 3D advertising memorabilia at the age of 14 and it has grown into the largest private collection of its kind in the world with 8,000+ pieces, some of the oldest dating back to the late 1700s. This collection is tightly secured in a museum located in the Pollack Real Estate Investment corporate offices in Mesa along with hundreds of antique collectible slot machines and a huge lunch box collection. Gracing the walls at his corporate headquarters is a photo gallery of before and after photos capturing the many shopping center building transformations he has redeveloped throughout greater metropolitan Phoenix. Pollack doesn’t do anything half way. His philosophy is, “Do it right, or don’t do it at all!” He carries the same enthusiasm over to his involvement in charity fund raising events throughout Arizona. He and his band, Corporate Affair, play for charity events and perform at the annual Phoenix Light Parade and Tempe Parade of Lights, where they play live music while riding in one of his two LED lighted train floats. Pollack, an avid drummer says it’s truly been a labor of love for him combining his passion for business with his hobbies. So, plan a date with family and friends to catch a movie at Pollack Tempe Cinemas and enjoy the experience of this themed movie theater. You might even find Pollack one weekend night meeting, greeting and shaking hands with the movie goers. It definitely is an affordable, fun time for all ages! Local Arizona Cardinals Player and Wife Introduce New Potty Training System PROVES LESS FRUSTRATING FOR PARENTS, MORE FUN FOR KIDS ARTICLE ERICA FORST | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

W

hen most people think of potty training they don’t think of the National Football League. However, life does not always lead us down an obvious path. It can be said that this is true for Mike and Julie Leach, the creators of Potty Pals, a comprehensive potty training system.

A CAREER PAVED BY HARD WORK

Mike did not always know a career in football would be his destiny. Growing up, he played various sports, including football, baseball, basketball and snow skiing. As he progressed, the idea of a college scholarship became a real possibility, and in 1995, he received one for football. Mike had significant success playing at the collegiate level. In his senior year at The College of William and Mary, Mike was named First-Team Walter Camp All-American and was soon after drafted to the NFL by the Tennessee Titans. In 2009, he was signed by the Arizona Cardinals and has played on the team for six years. 22

THE SET-UP

College wasn’t just about football for Mike. Before Mike and Julie Leach became business partners, they became partners of a different kind. The two met at William & Mary when Mike played football and Julie was on the basketball team. Julie’s teammate was dating one of Mike’s teammates. The two teammates challenged Mike and Julie to a 2-on-2 guys versus gals basketball game. The girls narrowly lost and had to buy dinner for the two football players. Julie and Mike have been together ever since. CHILDREN, AND AN IDEA, ARE BORN

First came love, then came marriage, then came baby-well, two babies-in the baby carriage. Today, Mike and Julie’s young ones, 9-year-old Ryan and 7-year-old Madeline, handle potty duties on their own, but it wasn’t always that simple. Julie calls their potty training experiences tough. “It was challenging with both of our kids for different reasons," she says. "Ryan had no interest in learning how to use the potty.

Maddie was anxious to try, but then she had trouble following through. It was during Maddie's training that we started to look for a product that helped teach children how to use the potty while also making it fun. When we couldn't find anything on the market like what we had in mind, Potty Pals was born.” After an NFL Consumer Products Boot Camp visit in March of 2014 and with the support of both the NFL Player Engagement Department and the Arizona Cardinals, Potty Pals went from an idea to a reality. A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIEND

Julie notes that kids usually have trouble with potty training because they are either scared of the potty or they do not want to interrupt playtime to use the restroom. She suggests to new parents the three p’s: patience, persistence and praise. And now another pair of p’s can be added to the list. Potty Pals introduces one of four characters: Larry Lion, Katie Kitty, Dexter Doggie or Penny Panda as the child’s potty training pal. When the child uses the potty, they celebrate by squeezing their pal’s hand so it can dance and sing for them. The tots get to choose a sticker and place it on their Potty Pals Progress Chart. The book, Potty Pals Club, is also included with the training system. “Larry Lion has made the potty training process so much fun," says Kristin Stanton, wife of Cardinals player Drew Stanton. "Our son loves singing and dancing along with Larry and is so proud of himself for joining the Potty Pals Club. Watch out Mom and Dad, that jingle is catchy and you will be humming it all day."

5-31-15 10/31/14

STAYING HUMBLE

Charity is important to the Leaches. Potty Pals is not only helpful to parents and their training toddlers, 10 percent of all Potty Pals proceeds are donated to Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Mike and Julie have made monthly visits to PCH for the last six years. They pass out Cardinals hats, teddy bears, and other goodies to help lift the children’s spirits, so it was only natural to partner with the hospital. Mike says that the NFL and starting a business are similar. "Both take hard work, persistence and the ability to overcome obstacles.” “As a football player, I leaned on the guys who came before me, constantly watching how they did things, what I could take from their skill set and incorporate it into mine," he says. "I wasn't afraid to ask questions, either of those players, or of the coaches. If I tried something on the field and it didn't work, I knew to try something different. If it did work, I would try to improve upon it. That has been our approach to business. We haven't been afraid to ask for help, nor have we been so arrogant as to think that we have all the answers. Experience is invaluable and we have sought advice from many people who have done what we are trying to do.” As for future goals, the pair lists making Potty Pals the go-to for potty training as one. “I’d like to help my kids become successful in life, maybe win a few golf tournaments, and become an above average cook," Mike adds. The Potty Pals potty training system includes one of four plush Potty Pals characters, the Potty Pals Club book, and a Potty Progress Chart with stickers to track achievement. Potty Pals retails for $34.95 and can be found on both Amazon.com and PottyPals.com.

Hot Spot

SanTan Brewing Company 8 S. San Marcos Pl, Chandler, AZ 85225 480.917.8700 SantanBrewing.com

SanTan Brewing Company Gives Chandler An Endless Supply Of Craft Food And Beer NEIGHBORHOOD HOT SPOT NOW A GROWING DESTINATION ARTICLE STEVEN TOTTEN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED s breweries are popping up all over the country and American’s consumption of craft beer continues to shoot upward like a rocket, Arizona has made its own footprint in the trend, having a number of breweries in the Valley that are nationally recognized. One of those breweries that locals and tourists both frequent is SanTan Brewing Company, located in Historic Downtown Chandler.

A

YEAR-ROUND FAVORITES

SanTan first opened in 2007 under the helm of Anthony Canecchia, a former brewer at the well-known Four Peaks. Wanting to have more freedom to experiment with different flavors and styles of beer, Canecchia has since created a brewery that boasts dozens of original beers. SanTan is perhaps most famous for Mr. Pineapple, a wheat ale that was originally the brewery’s summer seasonal brew. But by adding natural pineapple juice, a “firm malt character and a slight hint of clove” to a traditional wheat beer, as their drink menu reads, Mr. Pineapple has become incredibly popular. As a result, the beer has now become a year-round option. Despite Mr. Pineapple’s hard-to-resist fruity taste, SanTan Brewing Company offers about 14 other beers on tap, ranging from the light and tropical to the dark and creamy. For those of us who are too indecisive to pick just one beer to try, the best option is SanTan’s sampler. The

sampler features seven beers of your choice, served in “pourers” — 4-ounce glasses — resting on a tray which labels each brew chosen. But for those who are sure of what their taste buds wants, there is the option of getting a pint, 32-ounce “Canzilla” (which is a sort of aluminum growler) or a growler with refills. Because of Arizona’s infamous heat, many patrons would probably prefer a summer ale like Mr. Pineapple. But SanTan offers a number of other light beers that have just as much of a tasty light summer flavor. One such brew that stood out was the Grapefruit Shandy, which is 70 percent beer and 30 percent grapefruit juice. This style of beer inherited from Europe is the ideal summer drink, with a citrusy and sharp taste. This is also one of SanTan’s more unique brews, due to the fact that most shandies are mixed with other juices like lemonade or apple juice. SanTan’s 12 brewers have experimented with a number of fruit flavors, such as their Hefeweisen Wheat or their Lemon Bar White IPA. Yet neither of the aforementioned beers have any actual fruit mixed in: the Hefeweisen’s banana-clove taste and smell comes from its yeast, and the Lemon Bar’s citrus flavor comes from its Sorachi Ace hops. SEASONAL BEERS

The brewery has started serving its next seasonal beer, the Oktoberfest, a German-style lager. This is one of SanTan’s few lagers, but you won’t regret ordering it, with it’s malty and clean taste. In fact, SanTan’s darker beers are the easiest to drink. Whether it’s the Gordo Stout, which Shawn Golden, one of the brewery’s front-house managers, says “you can sip all day,” or the Mad Czar, a smooth Russian imperial stout, the dark brews have an easy-to-drink style. There are beers for any kind of bar frequenter at SanTan. Classic Budweiser and Coors drinkers can get the Epicenter, which Golden calls the “gateway into craft beer.” And those more-experienced craft beer drinkers, who more often than not are dedicated IPA fans, have a multitude of options, including the Little D Session IPA, Negro Nitrón Nitrogenated Black IPA, Heavy D Overweight IPA and Moonjuice IPA. THE BREW PUB

The team at SanTan is so committed to its brews that a large portion of the food is made with some part of the beers, thanks in part to its new chef, Ryan Tichenor, who was hired in March. The crust of their brew pub pizzas and Cuban-style “Ricky Ricardo” sandwich are both made with beer wort. Their delectable brownies are infused with the seasonal beer — this season’s Oktoberfest is mixed into the chocolate caramel brownie, topped with hot fudge agave sauce, candied vanilla walnuts and salted caramel gelato. SanTan even mixes its spent grain from brews into peanut butter treats for patron’s dogs, who are welcome on its patio. Each dish has a suggested beer to pair with the food, and SanTan includes gluten-free options as well. While the Valley has a variety of breweries to choose from, SanTan is not one to miss. The brick-walled building with high-vaulted ceilings, once home to the old Valley National Bank Building, is perfect for any kind of restauranteur, young and old.

Parting Thoughts

The Perch Pub and Brewery WORDS ANDREW BAUMAN

If you have been to Downtown Chandler in the past couple of years, you’ve noticed that it is no longer the slim collection of retail shops which typically wound down at 5 p.m. Now, Downtown Chandler has a busy nightlife with restaurants, bars and more than one brewery providing an entertainment district which has drawn crowds looking for fun! The Perch Pub and Brewery is the dream of proprietor, Rebecca Lavenue. When the opportunity to purchase a plot of land in Downtown Chandler arose, Rebecca knew that this space was the place to bring that dream to life. Having had her children graduate from Chandler High School and being a champion of all things Chandler, Rebecca envisioned a humble 75-seat restaurant and bar. The Perch became much more than that, incorporating a restaurant, a large courtyard dining space, a beer garden game area, a private dining space, and a rooftop patio. In the coming months, an additional restaurant will open on an adjacent lot which will complement The Perch. When guests arrive at The Perch they are greeted by 90+ exotic rescue birds which call

Downtown Chandler their home! Macaws, cockatoos, Amazon parrots, lovebirds, and many more species fill the aviary on the property. People often ask how The Perch got it its name. With the two main attractions being the exotic bird rescue and the rooftop patio with a view of Downtown Chandler, The Perch was a natural fit. As if a 400+ seat multi-use restaurant and bar filled with exotic birds wasn’t enough,The Perch also has a brewery. Many of the brews are food infused, coupling familiar flavors which new craft beer explorers feel comfortable trying out. Belgian Peach, Rooftop Rosemary IPA, Grilled Lemon Cream Ale, Ginger MoFo, Cinnamon Honey Nut Porter, and Desert Blossom Saison are frequently found on the house taps. With 40 total tap handles, wine and spirits available for guests to choose from, there is truly something for everyone.

Chef Timothy McGovern creates brunch, lunch, and dinner offerings which both compliment and often incorporate beer into the menu. The Perch’s wings are legendary, the cast iron skillet tamale is delicious and beautiful, and of course the brick oven fired pizza made with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in the crust is a perennial favorite. Since opening on February 14 in 2014, The Perch has been on a journey of constantly improving itself to make the service, and food and beverage options exactly what our guests want. Learn more about The Perch at PerchPubBrewery.com.
