A tribute to pets.
SEPTEMBER 2015
“I
t is amazing how much love and laughter pets bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them.” ― John Grogan, author, "Marley & Me"
I’ll never forget the day we came home with our new puppy, Max. He was born into a large litter that was up for adoption one hot weekend in July. He was a small shepherd mix with long, tan fur covered in black and white spots. Little did we know that Max would grow to become 65 pounds. He was feisty and naughty and got into a lot of trouble during those early puppy years. Max would dig holes in our backyard, regularly covering his paws and nose with dirt. There were times when he battled the couch, the rug and even the walls. He usually won. And there were accidents, lots of accidents. But as he grew, he became a loyal protector, and a fierce but gentle guard dog. Over the years and as our family grew, Max experienced health problems. He was diagnosed with Valley Fever, which required daily medication and advanced medical treatment. He eventually became weak and no longer had an appetite. At the veterinarian's office, lab work indicated that Max had kidney failure. He was so frail – visibly in pain – and his body was shutting down. But we weren’t ready to say goodbye. We continued medicating and caring for Max for several more weeks until it became clear that it was time. It was one of the hardest decisions we ever made. Even though we had nearly 10 years together, it wasn’t enough. Almost a year later, we still miss Max. While we aren’t ready to welcome another dog into our family right now, we know that we will be someday. And in the meantime, we look back and smile at the fond memories we had with Max and all the love and joy he brought into our lives. This issue is dedicated to our pets. From pet-friendly restaurant Original ChopShop and animal rescue Cooper’s Chance, to the benefits of pet therapy and the inspiration behind a local author’s new children’s book, we have you and your furry friends covered. Enjoy!

Around Town BLOW UP Perception of space is at the forefront of Vision Gallery's newest exhibit, BLOW UP. In this display, artists use air as their device for creating large-scale sculptures. These abstract pieces have been organized for the Lesher Center for the Arts by Carrie Lederer, the Bedrord Gallery Curator. “Inflatable structures connote fun and whimsy, and challenge our everyday, feeton-the-ground perspective," Lederer explains. "The show creates a spectacular, immersive environment and taps into our fascination with inflatables with artworks that are surreal, humorous and poetic.” BLOW UP artists include Joshua Allen Harris, Momoyo Torimitsu, Lee Boroson, Lewis de Soto and Patrick Flibotte all from New York, as well as Guy Overfelt of San Francisco. The Vision Gallery is located at 10 East Chicago Street. BLOW UP opens on September 4 and continues through October 30. To learn more about the exhibit, visit VisionGallery.org.
WATER SAFETY Chandler held a series of free water safety events during Drowning Prevention Awareness Month. The events were in conjunction with the Phoenix Children's Hospital's Annual Drowning Impact Awareness Month campaign. According to data gathered by Tempe-based non-profit organization Children's Saftey Zone, through early July there had been 86 water-related incidents in both Maricopa and Pinal county in 2015. Included in those incidents were the deaths of 15 adults, two teens, and four children, two of which were in Chandler. Participants viewed water safety presentations and CPR demonstrations put on by Chandler's Aquatics Division and Fire, Health & Medical Department. Emphasized at the events was the importance of close supervision and that children near water need 10

OPERATION BACK TO SCHOOL Every year, thousands of children return to school without school supplies, uniforms, or properly-sized shoes. The lack of these necessities can interfere with a child's focus in the classroom. Costco, Intel, Whole Foods, ICAN, Fans Across America, The City of Chandler, Avnet, Chandler Christian Community Center, numerous churches, employers, school districts, and non-profit organizations donated time and funds to bring these much needed supplies to the children of Chandler during this year's Operation Back to School event. The collective effort gave school supplies, shoes, socks, underwear and uniforms to hundreds of parents in Chandler's largest school supply drive. Along with supplies, local non-profits in informational booths provided resources on free after-school programs, dental screenings, literacy kits, fingerprinting, haircuts and fire and water safety. To learn how you can donate or get involved, visit BacktoSchoolChandler.org.
A RISING STAR Congratulations to Kristina Coyle of Chandler who was named a Rising Star by Women's Bond Club. "It is humbling and an honor," says Coyle, a marketing and recruiting director at AXA Advisors Southwest. "It’s an amazing springboard for our careers with the opportunity to meet people and gain wisdom and leadership skills to share with our teams."
In association with the Women's Bond Club of New York, Rising Star is an honor that recognizes women who, in the early stages of their careers, exhibit the qualities of future leaders. Nominees must have a manager's written recommendation, receive outstanding performance reviews, and submit an essay. Coyle was chosen among 24 AXA nominees nationwide and was honored at the Women's Bond Club Rising Star Recognition Breakfast in New York. Local Branch Operations Manager Brady Schneider nominated Coyle. "Kristina's daily motivation is for everyone to succeed and enjoy what they do, in all aspects of their lives,” Schneider says. "She is the essence of a Rising Star and the Southwest branch is proud to have her in our corner." Coyle will now have the opportunity to participate in a six-month development class with other Rising Stars.

VOLUNTEENING Students from across the Valley gathered at Dignity Health AZ General Hospital Emergency Room in Chandler to take part in a summer volunteer program. The “volunteens” aged 14-18 learned from experts in the health care industry in this real workplace environment. The
program, aimed at developing leaders, gave students selected through a rigorous screening process, the opportunity to tour the hospital and perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) on each other. To be considered, students need to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5 and submit an application, two essay questions, and two letters of recommendation. Barb Farmer, manager of Volunteer Services at Dignity Health Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert Medical Centers says, “Gaining exclusive insight prepares students for a future in the health care field. If we lay that foundation when they’re young, they will be more prepared when they graduate college. The program provides invaluable insight into the world of medicine, molding students into compassionate leaders.”

Saving Penelope HOW A LOCAL VETERINARIAN DIAGNOSED AND TREATED A DEBILITATING BACTERIAL INFECTION ARTICLE MATTHEW PERRY | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
M
ost all of us have heard the saying, “A dog is a man’s best friend.” It’s not until you have one that you really understand what this phrase means. I would say that a dog is not only man’s best friend, but a part of the family. Penelope is our amazing four-year-old Victorian bulldog. One year into her life, we realized she was suffering from severe allergies. After many visits with our local veterinarian and extensive blood work, our best solution at the time was resorting to steroids. Two years later, our family moved from the Midwest to Chandler. We were excited for this new adventure – for many reasons – including getting Penelope to an allergy-free environment. Or, so we thought. Within two months of arriving in Chandler, Penelope was in worse condition than we had ever seen. Most of her fur was gone, revealing nothing but an extremely pink skin resulting from severe allergic reactions to our new environment. Not only was her stomach full of sores and blisters, but her appetite drastically decreased and she only wanted to lie in her bed all day and night.
12
Chandler Lifestyle | September 2015
It was at this time we became desperate to save the youngest member of our family. With very little quality of life remaining, we truly weren’t sure how much life remained within her. We reached out to Andrea Stickland at the Animal Medical Center of Chandler. Dr. Stickland was not only patient to listen and learn about the history of Penelope, but calmed our fears and gave us hope. Through a series of tests, we quickly learned not only exactly what Penelope was allergic to in her new environment, but also that the steroids that had previously kept her stable, were actually damaging her liver. In addition, we found out that she was suffering from an inadequately functioning thyroid, which also contributed to her lack of response. Therefore, the only medication that had managed to stabilize her health was now failing her as well. According to Dr. Stickland, Penelope was suffering from some concerning complications. She had a chronic non-responding bacterial infection that with improper medication resulted in methicillin resistant staph pseudointermedius (similar to MRSA).
A now healthy Penelope
The long-standing steroid use had significantly decreased her ability to respond to any infection and her skin had become thin. Either through inheritance or long-term steroids, her thyroid was now no longer working correctly, contributing to her weight gain and lethargy, in addition to her chronic skin infections. Controlling hormone imbalance and diligently working with topical therapies to control infection were the only options left. A few months later, Penelope quickly and amazingly became a happy, healthy and stable member of our family again. Not only that, but she was full of fur, had no pink skin or blisters, and lost 20 pounds, putting her at a very healthy weight for her breed. Thanks to Dr. Stickland, we not only found hope, but were able to make Penelope whole again. We continue to make regular visits to Dr. Stickland to ensure her stability. Penelope is now on a treatment plan, taking just a few medications, to keep her stable for every season we experience in Chandler. Pet Therapy ARTICLE KRISTINA WELKER, PSY.D., LPC | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
E
xploring the benefits of pet therapy is fascinating. Therapy pets are used in nursing homes, hospitals, prisons and counseling offices. Studies show that the presence of a dog decreases anxiety, lowers blood pressure and increases life expectancy. People often come to counseling because they believe that they are not being heard. Some people have all but given up trying to communicate their feelings. They have stuffed their emotions internally, causing a myriad of negative symptoms ranging from depression to rage to physical illnesses. The benefit of having a therapy dog is to provide social stimulation and physical contact, which has been shown to thereby boost moral, decrease depression and improve relationships.
14
Chandler Lifestyle | September 2015
Gizmo, my canine companion, is a 6-pound Pomeranian. He is a bundle of energy that struts out to the waiting room to greet my clients. His presence brings a smile to everyone’s face and creates an atmosphere of trust thereby creating a safe place for my clients to feel comfortable enough to disclose their feelings. Maybe it is because Gizmo’s presence makes therapy seem less intimidating, or maybe it’s because people believe that a counselor with a dog must mean she is compassionate. Adolescents who come in to my office who are adamant that they do not want to talk to a counselor often find their voices when they scoop up Gizmo and gently place him in their laps. Individuals, who feel that they are drowning in the depths of sorrow, visibly relax by stroking Gizmo. Couples, who come in arguing, appear to calm down when they put Gizmo on the couch between them. Gizmo’s presence appears to encourage people to step outside of themselves and to observe what is going on around them instead of just what is going on inside of them. Dogs exhibit a sixth sense in therapy and are much more intuitive than humans. Gizmo seems to understand when he needs to comfort clients and when he needs to leave them alone. I find myself watching how Gizmo behaves. Is he avoiding them? If so, do they have a wall that prevents them from opening up? If Gizmo is overly affectionate, I wonder, are they grieving? Are they depressed? What are they not telling me? Many questions are brought to the surface simply because of Gizmo. As a team, Gizmo and I offer a safe place for clients to uncover who they are. They don’t have to be fearful or anxious. They now have a place where they will not be judged. They are able to learn that true acceptance is unconditional. Quite frankly, once clients embrace the fact that they are lovable, then all things are possible. Dr. Kristina Welker is a doctor of psychology, a licensed therapist, and a certified life coach. The Team That Brought
The Legend of Orville Justin Fur to Life ARTICLE JACKIE BINSFELD PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
A
s a little girl, Kerry Hamilton enjoyed hearingthe tale of Orville Justin Fur, a brave English sea captain. Her mother, Sue Luginbill, had created the story from her vivid imagination to entertain her two children. Thirty years later, Hamilton, along with the help of local artist Ashley Ashcroft, brought the story to life in the form of the book, “The Legend of Orville Justin Fur.”
16
Chandler Lifestyle | September 2015
THE INSPIRATION An English major who has always loved reading, Luginbill is known by friends and family as a wonderful storyteller. When Hamilton and her brother Tommy were children, Luginbill would have them provide her with a subject, and from there, Luginbill created countless stories for her children to enjoy. Luginbill, as her daughter explains, is not simply a magnificent storyteller. Her creativity allows her to be a talented interior designer, artist, seamstress, culinary expert and more. Luginbill and her endless skills inspired her children to be creative spirits as well. “I was lucky to be a stay-at-home mom, so I could encourage whatever my kids loved at each stage. In Tommy's case, it was costumes and dress-up until it was sports and football. Kerry loved her dolls and make-believe and I sewed, so I could often create what she imagined for them,” Luginbill recalls. For Hamilton, her mother most memorably nurtured her creative spirit by writing poems on her children’s lunchbox napkins. These daily reminders about the possibilities and wonder of creative writing allowed Hamilton to truly appreciate the field. In fact, today Hamilton writes her own poetry for loved ones and special occasions. Hamilton was able to pen her mother’s story, but she needed to find an artist to illustrate Orville Justin Fur’s journey. Wanting to help a young artist build experience (and a portfolio), Hamilton found Ashley Ashcroft. Ashcroft, a talented Chandler-Gilbert Community College art student, has always had a passion for art. When she heard about the chance to take on this project, she knew it would be a fantastic way to gain experience. “I never dreamed I would have this opportunity,” Ashcroft explains. “When my college professor suggested I get in contact with Kerry, I thought it might be a great chance to gain experience and it ended up being so much more than that. I'm very grateful Kerry chose me to represent this story with my work.” Inspired by animated movies and wildlife documentaries that she watched as a child, Ashcroft has helped Hamilton bring her CONTINUED > mother’s words to life. THE TEAM THAT BROUGHT THE LEDGEND OF ORVILLE JUSTIN FUR TO LIFE (CONTINUED)
THE CREATION Luginbill had considered publishing a book for many years. Wanting to help her mother’s dreams become a reality, Hamilton sought to share her story with others. When Hamilton had children of her own, she realized how much they loved for her to read stories that included both animals and rhyme. As such, Captain Orville Justin Fur and his friends were reborn as animals. “The original Orville Justin Fur was an Englishman, so with the last name ‘Fur,’ a big, fluffy and kid-friendly English sheep dog seemed a natural choice when changing Orville from human to animal,” Hamilton explains.
Luginbill and Hamilton
Other than making the characters animals, Hamilton explains that the story had few changes. To add whimsy and inspire the illustrations, Orville was given new details – including a favorite pair of boots and snack. Having worked in public relations and marketing for more than two decades, Hamilton has been able to grow both her love and talent for writing. However, even with great skill, creating this book was no simple task. “This book was a labor of love that took several years to complete and plenty of patience for everyone involved,” Hamilton remarks. “No matter your age or stage in life, finding balance can be a challenge. But when you have the chance to participate in a true passion project like this, you simply find the time to make it happen.” And make it happen she did, with every detail given consideration. Hamilton explains that she even tested the font style and size with her daughter so that other children of elementary-school age would be able to easily read the text. Ashcroft dedicated an enormous amount of time and effort to the book as well. Finding time between school and work, Ashcroft sketched and digitalized the illustrations for the largest project she has ever worked on. “I've never worked on a project of this scale or type before,” Ashcroft explains. “Kerry has been so wonderful to collaborate with and I've gained a lot of insight into how the illustration process works.” The partnership between Hamilton, Luginbill and Ashcroft has allowed others to enjoy the adventures of Captain Orville Justin Fur.
THE FUTURE After three years of hard work, “The Legend of Orville Justin Fur” has finally been published – but this does not mean an end to the creativity of the team. Hamilton explains that they do not have another book planned, but has not ruled it out. As for Ashcroft, she plans to focus on her classes and continue to develop her artistic skills. She has enjoyed the process of illustrating for a children’s book, but she is not certain that it is her calling. She explains, “It would be a wonderful experience to continue doing illustrations for children's books and help other authors see their stories come to life. I haven't yet decided if that's the direction I want my future to go, but it's definitely a possibility.” Luginbill continues to be an inspiration of creativity. Like Hamilton, she recalls writing poems on her children’s napkins before packing them in their lunchboxes. Her grandchildren are also lucky enough to hear Luginbill’s imaginative stories and poems. Now everyone can enjoy her stories, which Luginbill calls “a dream come true, thanks to my very special daughter.”

Cooper’s Chance ANIMAL RESCUE RESCUING, REHABILITATING AND REHOMING PUPS IN NEED
“We get so many compliments about our dogs. Even our second chance dogs who were on a euthanasia list or in the shelters for months,” says Steemke
ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO | PHOTOGRAPHY BRIDGETTE MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY

ears ago, Shannon Steemke adopted a dog named Cooper who had been abused by former owners and was fearful. Steemke was an animal lover who didn’t have a lot of experience with troubled dogs. Cooper attacked Steemke and bit off a portion of her ear. Instead of giving up on Cooper, she was motivated to seek help and try to rehabilitate her. This was a defining moment in her life, and from this tragic experience, grew her desire to help others. Eventually her enthusiasm blossomed into a nonprofit rescue organization, designed to help pets and people. In 2006, after gaining years of dog training experience, Steemke founded Cooper’s Chance Animal Rescue (CCAR). “I started Cooper’s Chance to give animals and people the best chance possible,” says Steemke, president of CCAR. FOSTER HOMES
Cooper's Chance is 100 percent volunteer run and dependent on foster families to care for the dogs in the program. Dogs are placed in a foster home, rehabilitated if needed and then adopted. While the ultimate goal is adoption, volunteers work diligently to make sure they end up in the right foster home as well. Steemke does a site visit with all foster family candidates and listens to their needs and wants. Some people would like to offer their home on a short-term basis, while others might want a longer time-frame. Some fosters prefer older dogs, while others are just jumping at the chance to take a litter of puppies. Some people come with training knowledge and want a second chance pet, while others prefer an easy keeper. “Without foster homes we can’t rescue,” says Steemke. “We provide everything from bowls and food, to medical care. All the foster homes need to provide is a loving home and safe place.” She also recognizes that people might need a break in between foster dogs and supports that wholeheartedly. 20

DOG AND PEOPLE TRAINING
The rescue acquires many dogs from Maricopa County animal shelters and smaller rural shelters that have a high intake. They strive to rescue abused and neglected dogs that are at high risk for euthanasia. Rehabilitation and training are critical to their success. “We get so many compliments about our dogs. Even our second chance dogs who were on a euthanasia list or in the shelters for months,” says Steemke. Most of the training is spearheaded by Steemke, who has eight years of extensive dog training experience. But if the dog needs more training than she can provide, she sets the dog up with a professional trainer. Steemke is a strong advocate for education, and not just for the pups. She enjoys educating humans too, and sees it as the solution for over-crowded shelters. “We have a serious problem,” says Steemke. “If we can educate people, we can have fewer dogs in the shelter and get these dogs adopted.” BRINGING HOME THE KIBBLE
Cooper’s Chance Animal Rescue hosts several fundraisers annually. They also depend on a few small grants and the generosity of the Chandler community. They always need foster families and volunteers to help with events and fundraising. They appreciate donations of dog food and supplies such as leashes, crates and bowls. Their number one supply need, surprisingly, is linens, towels, sheets or anything a nursing doggy mom can lay on. “We have been in Chandler since day one and will continue to be. Our long-term goal is to have a building here. We want to have a green focused rescue, a sanctuary,” says Steemke.
PAWSATIVE BEGINNINGS
A shelter is no home for a pregnant dog or her pups. Most shelters euthanize them because they are just overrun. Fortunately through their program called Pawsative Beginnings, CCAR focuses heavily on rescuing these puppies and moms so they can have a chance at life. “We have a million puppies. Right now I have a litter of five in my house. They turn out to be the most wonderful puppies because they are hand raised,” says Steemke. Recently some puppies were found in a school dumpster in Casa Grande. Steemke praises the maintenance man who found them, because school was dismissed for the summer. She guesses they are Labrador, cattle dog and maybe Aussie mixes. They are various colors from brindle to brown and two of them have green eyes. They are ready to be adopted and are vaccinated, sterilized and microchipped for their new mom or dad. They are also very accustomed to receiving love. It’s hard to believe that Steemke runs CCAR on a volunteer basis, but she does! She has a full-time job pet sitting and is proud to give a portion of her proceeds to CCAR. She’s dedicated. She knows that the program rescued precisely 409 dogs and teases that you’re not her friend or family unless you foster.

hen you find a concept that works, the possibilities are endless. That’s exactly what Ryan and Caitlin Jocque discovered when they opened the Original ChopShop Co. in Old Town Scottsdale in February of 2013. Their passion was to create a place that would offer a healthy menu with different twists on ingredients. The fast, healthy cuisine was just the right fit for today’s lifestyle. Only five months later, a second location opened in Tempe and nine months after that, the Chandler location opened. Once you visit, you will attest that the Jocque’s blended all the right ingredients to create the right spot for any occasion. The ambiance at the Chandler ChopShop is fantastic. It is located in Historic Downtown Chandler in the original building that housed a bank in 1919 with its high ceilings, bank vault door, and exposed brick. Remnants of the original tile can be found in the restaurant and at the entry where the word “Bank” is inlaid. Hanging on a wall across from the open kitchen, you’ll find photographs of previous businesses all adding to the charm of this location. Two pet-friendly patios are available with fresh water and pet treats. One is located at the front which connects to an open bar and the other is located at the side with water misters CONTINUED > and an adjacent children’s play area.

EXTENSIVE MENU, REASONABLE PRICES
An extensive menu includes breakfast items that are offered daily until noon and weekends until 2 p.m. Choices include toasted sprouted grain bagel, sprouted grain bagel sandwich, egg-veggie hash, Zen bowl, balanced bowl, cheat day wrap, sunrise wrap and open-faced sandwich. Also, fresh baked goods are made daily and include a variety of gluten-free choices. The menu offers 12 enticing, freshly squeezed juices. I sampled the Kale Cleanse made with kale, orange, apple, lime and ginger. It was delicious! I also tried the Slim Squeeze made with pear, strawberry, orange, apple, kiwi, lemon and mint and it was very refreshing. You can even create your own by selecting four items from kale, beet, ginger, lemon, lime, pineapple, pear, strawberry, grapes, kiwi, mint and parsley. The menu's Between the Bread section lists eight sandwiches made from whole wheat bread or put on a whole wheat or gluten-free wrap. I found the Moroccan Turkey to be moist and flavorful with its chopped turkey, avocado, roasted red pepper, grapes, cucumber and lettuce with a yogurt sauce. Other selections include grilled chicken with prosciutto; tuna salad; chicken and kale; veggie and hummus; grilled sirloin with caramelized onions and a club. Want more of a meal? The Grilled Protein Bowls are incredible with a generous serving of roasted broccoli, cauliflower, carrot, mushroom, snap peas, green onion and cilantro. Choices include Thai Chicken, Teriyaki Chicken, Sirloin, Shrimp and Tofu and include a choice of brown rice or sweet potato hash and a slight charge for forbidden rice or quinoa. I sampled the Thai Chicken made with a delicious peanut and Thai coconut sauce. Yummy! Next I tried the Danish and the Beet salads and was amazed how each was so flavorful I couldn’t decide which I liked best. The Danish had house greens, arugula, smoked almonds, Danish bleu cheese, shaved pears and apples, dried currants and dates and is tossed with red wine vinaigrette. I really enjoyed the combination of flavors and textures. The Beet salad had roasted golden beets on house greens and arugula with sour apple, goat cheese, cashews and golden raisins tossed with red wine vinaigrette. All of the salads can have a protein added or can be made into a wrap. Protein shakes, parfaits, fruit bowls and a kid’s menu are also available. In addition there’s a small bar for an after work cocktail, cold beer or glass of wine. Food restrictions are not a problem and the kitchen will try to accommodate those requests. A small marketplace is filled with grab-and-go items as well as novelty gifts. 24

What’s Cooking?
The Perfect Pet Treat ARTICLE CORINE GREEN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
L
ooking for a healthy treat for your pet? This basic dog treat recipe can be used as a starting point, and customized based on your pet's taste buds. Our dog Rocco loves carrots, kale and blueberries, so we packed them into these treats. You always want to limit the grains your pet eats, but for an occasional treat, these are better than store bought options. All ingredients listed are organic. Since we eat organic, we think Rocco should, too! INGREDIENTS
1/2 c. brown rice flour 1/2 c. quick cook oats 2 small carrots, finely diced (about 1/3 c.) 2 small dinosaur kale leaves, finely diced (about 1/3 c.) 20 blueberries, finely diced (a food processor works great to quickly dice the fruit and veggies) 2 tablespoons ground and/or whole flaxseed 6 tablespoons water Parchment paper Rolling pin Cookie cutter COOKING DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350°F 1. In a small dish combine flaxseed (ground and/or whole) with water, stir and set aside for 10-15 minutes. This will be the binder for the treats. 2. Prepare remaining ingredients while the flax gels up. 3. In a medium sized bowl, combine the flour, oats, fruit and veggies. Check your flaxseed mixture and see if it has thickened and become slightly gelatinous, give it a stir and then add it to the bowl. 4. Stir well to combine using a spatula or your hands. If the mixture is too dry and not sticking together after thoroughly mixing, add more water 1-2 tsp. at a time. You don't want it too sticky. 5. On a sheet of parchment paper (12"x12" is a good size) dump out the dough. Flatten it with your hands, ensuring you keep the edges from cracking and separating as you go. Make it square or round, depending on the cookie cutter shape you are using. (square cutter = square rolled dough, etc) 6. Use a rolling pin to finish flattening the dough, until it's about 1/4" thick. 7. Use your favorite cookie cutter shape to make the treats. (I used a 3"x1" rectangle and it yielded 16 treats.) Place each treat on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. They can be close together because they won't rise or expand. 8. Bake at 350°F for 12-14 minutes or until thoroughly dried. (NOTE: For raw treats that are alive with healthy enzymes, which are good for digestion, you can also dehydrate these overnight at 115°F if you have a dehydrator.) Parting Thoughts
Living life with compassion WORDS JOSEPHINE MORRIS | PHOTOGRAPHY BRIDGETTE MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY
I
have a calling as many people do. Mine is to help create a humane society – one in which we show animals respect, rather than subject them to neglect and violence. It became clear to me 10 years ago when I found a stray, sick puppy in central Phoenix. I nursed him back to health, named him Zeus, and to this day, he’s an integral part of our family. Zeus taught me so many things; most importantly, to be brave. This dog, thrown away like someone’s trash, changed my life. Rescuing Zeus led me to recognize that millions of healthy, friendly dogs and cats are euthanized every year throughout shelters in the United States because they lack loving families to adopt them. Once I learned this, there was no turning back. My path was clear. I dedicated my life to advocating on behalf of all animals that endure unnecessary cruelty and suffering. My friends and I started Help a Dog Smile, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization. We rescue dogs from deplorable situations, rehabilitate them, and find them forever, loving homes. With the unwavering dedication and support of amazing friends and family, we have helped more than 1,000 companion animals in the past 10 years. Saving dogs helped me become aware of how many other animals are in need of our protection – animals who suffer cruelty beyond our comprehension. On factory farms, chickens, cows, pigs, sheep and other animals endure egregious acts of torture that if done to Zeus would be criminal. 34
Chandler Lifestyle | September 2015
As an outreach coordinator for The Humane Society of the United States, the largest animal protection organization in the world, I partner with schools, universities, hospitals and corporations in helping them serve more plant-based proteins, including fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains. In these mutually beneficial relationships, we work together to achieve a more humane society by reducing or replacing consumption of animal products, and refining diets by choosing products from sources that adhere to higher animal welfare standards. We all make choices every single day that affect animals in profound ways. By choosing compassion – whether by helping a homeless dog or enjoying more plant-based meals – we all have the power to make a difference in the lives of others. When we see suffering or pain, it is instinctual to want to take action. We often hesitate because of fear and doubt. Once we put those two aside, we can accomplish so much more than we could have ever dreamed. Every one of us is capable of helping animals and creating a more compassionate world every day. We need only to take the first step. Josephine Morris is the co-founder of Help a Dog Smile and Food Policy Outreach Coordinator for The Humane Society of the United States.
