Passion Meets

Precision in Building

TJ Troup of Troup Custom Carpentry pairs passion and purpose with timeless design.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN THIS FIELD?

I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands and building things – model cars, playing with tools, and machines. I had dirt bikes and four-wheelers I would take apart and put back together. Some of my earliest memories were playing in my great-grandfather’s wood shop. As I got older, I realized my great-grandfather was a brick mason and I highly admired his work ethic, skills, and abilities. By the time I was 12 or 13, I started to realize that not everybody can do the things that I can do naturally.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE TIMELESS DESIGN WITH MODERN TRENDS?

Charlottesville has a lot of older, craftsman-style homes, which we love! One of the biggest things we try to focus on when planning and designing a product is how to incorporate modern construction technology and materials to achieve timeless looks. We typically do a lot of research on the front end of our projects to think outside of the box when making certain selections. We want to incorporate the touch of craftsmanship with a durable and long-lasting finished product.

The biggest mistake we see is when a contractor chooses to use a high-quality modern product while neglecting to educate themselves on proper construction procedures for the product. This leads to an unprofessional finish that does not seem well thought out or incorporated into the existing home, taking away from the home’s timeless element. A subtle touch of modern technology paired with attention to detail and craftsmanship goes a long way!

CAN YOU SHARE EXAMPLES OF HOW YOU ARE INCORPORATING SUSTAINABLE OR ECOFRIENDLY MATERIALS INTO YOUR PROJECTS?

We are a Gold Level TimberTech Professional Deck Builder. With decking engineered from 60 to 85% recycled content, our outdoor living products perform better than wood every time and help homeowners create nature-inspired, sustainable outdoor living spaces. The average 15’ x 15’ TimberTech Advanced PVC deck keeps 40 trash bags of construction waste and scrap out of landfills! AZEK, TimberTech’s parent company, is the largest vertically integrated recycler of PVC in the USA. Recycled material is the largest raw material input we use and every TimberTech deck is made from a majority of recycled material. Their commitment to innovation combined with our material science expertise allows them to process and re-use material that most others can’t.

ARE THERE SPECIFIC TRENDS UNIQUE TO THIS AREA OR DRIVEN BY ITS CLIMATE AND CULTURE?

Charlottesville is such a beautiful area and people take a lot of pride in that. Our homeowners enjoy being outdoors, soaking in their mountain views, or having their dinner hosted outside. Outdoor cooking and living spaces are becoming increasingly popular and we became Gold TimberTech Pros simply by demand. Our homeowners put a lot of value on being able to

WE ARE ON A MISSION TO INNOVATE OUR BUSINESS PROCESSES TO PROVIDE THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE CONSTRUCTION EXPERIENCE THAT WE CAN.

make their outdoor spaces as useful as possible –screened-in porches, covered patios, and custom elements like lighting, roof coverings, and masonry like pavers/concrete.

FOR HOMEOWNERS LOOKING TO INCREASE THEIR HOME’S VALUE, WHAT RENOVATIONS OR UPGRADES WOULD YOU RECOMMEND?

Upgrading the material types on replacements is huge. For example, if you have wood siding, consider upgrading to an engineered product such as fiber cement, engineered wood, composite/PVC, trim, and facia products. When you replace these products, you’re also replacing the WRB (weather-resistant barrier) and all the flashing and trim details. This helps the building perform better and increases the longevity of the building. Plus, a lot of these materials mimic traditional craftsman looks while enhancing and modernizing their form.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING A CUSTOM HOME PROJECT?

Do your best to speak with contractors about your ideas before you ever talk about executing a project. If a contractor isn’t willing to have an openended conversation to guide and advise you, that will tell you a lot about the type of service you’re going to get. Don’t fall into the trap of only shopping “estimates.” Shop for the type of company they are, shop for the type of work they do, shop for

how they treat you, etc. You will always be tempted to take the lower price but it’s very important to get an idea of who you are working with. The rest will take care of itself!

ARE THERE INNOVATIONS IN CONSTRUCTION OR RENOVATION YOU’RE EXCITED ABOUT?

Wow, where to start! We nerd out over building technology. We are always looking for the next best way to execute construction details in our projects. It’s exciting to integrate new materials.

I am very excited about a lot of the innovations coming to composite-type materials that are blends of natural and synthetic materials. Everything from siding to decking to exterior trim products – it’s a great way to produce a very high-performing finished project.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOUR BUSINESS? ANY UPCOMING PROJECTS OR INITIATIVES YOU’RE ESPECIALLY EXCITED ABOUT?

We are on a mission -- that’s for sure. We are on a mission to make residential construction better than it ever was and bring more talented tradespeople into this amazing industry. To our tradespeople, I want to give back to an industry that has given so much to me. I want to continue to provide a true career for my team and give them something to be proud of.

To our homeowners, we are on a mission to innovate our business processes to provide the most comprehensive construction experience that we can.

BRINGING PANTONE'S 2025 COLOR HOME

Laurie Mandichak has been designing spaces in Charlottesville since 2009, bringing her talent for blending styles and honoring history to every project. With experience ranging from design at Artful Lodger to freelance work, she’s passionate about working in a community where historic charm meets modern aesthetics. This year, Mandichak is enthusiastic about Pantone’s Color of the Year, Mocha Mousse. “I think it’s really cool -- it’s going to be really easy to incorporate it into a lot of different projects this year,” she said. “It’s a more earthy, neutral color than the last few years and very calming.

It’s going to be grounding for people and it’s going to be a really easy one to use.”

For homeowners hesitant about committing to the color, Laurie recommends starting small. “The easiest way is with throw pillows in a bunch of textures -- velvets, linen, or even leather,” she suggested. “A chunky blanket or some peel-and-stick wallpaper in a small alcove is another great way to test it out.”

For a bigger impact, Mandichak envisions a monochromatic bedroom. “Paint the walls, trim, and maybe incorporate a large headboard or chairs in the same

color,” she advised. “Layering with lighter creams and darker chocolates can make it feel extra warm and cozy.”

She also notes that the color complements Charlottesville’s mix of architectural styles. “It pairs beautifully with wood tones or can bring warmth into a modern space through accents like a vase or throw blanket.”

For local resources, Mandichak recommends Artful Lodger. “They’re great at ordering custom pieces in fabrics and textures that embrace this color,” she says.

Whether you make a subtle nod or go all-in, this versatile hue promises to add timeless warmth to any home.

color tips

• Test Before You Commit : Start small with items like throw pillows, chunky blankets, or peel-and-stick wallpaper. These low-commitment options allow you to experiment with the color.

• Upgrade Accents: Swap out bathroom towels or add the hue to your decor with small vases or planters for a quick refresh.

• Go Big : Paint built-ins, trim, or an accent wall. Laurie also recommends creating a cozy, monochromatic bedroom with painted walls, headboards, and layers of cream and chocolate tones.

• Find the Right Pairings: Balance the earthy hue with pops of blue, green, or pink.

• Shop Smart : Check out Artful Lodger for custom furniture and textiles in this color. They excel at finding textures and patterns to match.

Celebrate Spring with Style

Maryury Padilla, founder of C-Ville Bites, took the time to share with us some of her best tips for hosting a springtime dinner party. From food and drinks to music and lighting, Padilla has all of the recommendations for making your spring soiree a success.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT SPRINGTIME ENTERTAINING?

There is something so refreshing about springtime -- the warmer weather, spring flowers, and a renewed energy in the air. It’s soft and lovely and colorful. My favorite part of springtime entertaining, though, is being able to enjoy the outdoors again after a long winter.

SPRING PARTY TIPS FROM A SEASONED ENTERTAINING EXPERT.

Rosé wine being poured into glasses.
“MY FAVORITE PART OF SPRINGTIME ENTERTAINING IS

BEING ABLE TO ENJOY THE OUTDOORS AGAIN AFTER

A LONG WINTER.”

WHAT ARE THE KEY ELEMENTS OF A SUCCESSFUL SPRING DINNER PARTY?

Incredible food is the key -- it can make or break the evening. Consider hiring a chef or caterer for a stress-free, delicious food spread. Small, thoughtful details will also make your guests feel special and give your dinner party an intimate vibe.

DO YOU RECOMMEND HOSTING INDOORS, OUTDOORS, OR A COMBINATION OF BOTH FOR THIS SEASON?

I prefer to host outdoors in the spring -- the warmer weather, fresh air, and flowers provide an ambiance that your guests will remember. Spring showers are a real thing, however, and you should always have a backup plan, even if it’s a simpler version of your original plan.

HOW CAN SOMEONE SET THE TONE FOR A FESTIVE AND WELCOMING SPRING GATHERING?

Hosts can try their hand at making creative invitations. I’ve worked with a designer in the past, but you can also play around with Canva. A good playlist and festive lighting help encourage a celebratory mood.

WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO TIPS FOR CREATING A SPRING-INSPIRED TABLESCAPE?

Fresh flowers in bud vases will give you an effortless vibe, and a tablecloth or table runner can add texture and color. Small details like handwritten name cards or fun napkins make it all come together.

ARE THERE ANY COLORS, TEXTURES, OR THEMES THAT YOU LOVE INCORPORATING INTO SPRING PARTY DECOR?

I adore pastel tones in the springtime (who doesn’t?). I love using greenery to bring vibrancy and texture to the table. But not everything has to be colorful -- budding dogwood branches make a beautiful centerpiece and really highlight the expectancy of spring.

C-VILLE BITES

Maryury Padilla has had a longtime love for organizing events and throwing parties. “Anything to have an excuse to be with friends and eat delicious food,” she said.

Now, with C-ville Bites, she feels lucky to have the opportunity to host food tours, events, and classes for locals and visitors. “There’s something about stopping to celebrate, to take a second and really be present in the moment that I think we could use more of,” Padilla said.” I love the feeling of being together and connecting over great food, music, and company.”

Padilla’s hospitality background extends even further beyond C-Ville Bites. “I’m also a licensed bartender and previous bar manager at several local establishments, and my passion has always been making sure my guests leave with a smile,” she said. “I love the diversity of flavors that our area has to offer. When I have a new culinary experience, my first thought is: I need to share this…”

WHAT DISHES OR INGREDIENTS WORK WELL FOR A SPRING DINNER MENU (PARTICULARLY LOCAL INGREDIENTS)?

I love a springtime salad with fresh goat cheese and springtime berries. Caromont Farms here in Charlottesville is great, and the farmer’s market has local strawberries that are particularly delicious.

HOW CAN HOSTS ACCOMMODATE DIETARY RESTRICTIONS OR PREFERENCES WITHOUT STRESS?

To reduce stress, being prepared is the best way to accommodate dietary restrictions for your guests (knowing who’s allergic to what). Be sure to clearly label food if you have a buffet or family-style gathering, and offer some alternatives for dietary restrictions (gluten-free crackers or bread, for example).

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPRING-THEMED COCKTAILS OR MOCKTAILS TO SERVE?

I’d suggest choosing a signature cocktail for a more personalized touch. You can even prep a pitcher or two beforehand and garnish when serving. As for flavors, there's something so bright and refreshing about mint, so I’d probably choose a mojito or mint julep! But anything that incorporates fruit would be delicious -- a strawberry margarita or peach and Champagne bellini. For a more savory option, you could try a bourbon cocktail with a twist of lemon and fresh basil garnish.

WHAT’S ONE ITEM YOU ALWAYS INCLUDE TO MAKE YOUR GATHERINGS FEEL UNIQUE AND SPECIAL?

I love charcuterie. For a personal touch, you can offer charcuterie cups. They’re perfect when guests are arriving or during cocktail hour. A beautifully arranged charcuterie doesn’t have to take a lot of time or effort, but it makes guests feel extra special.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE SPRING PARTY MEMORY THAT STANDS OUT?

I remember a backyard dinner party a couple of years ago -it ended up storming, and we all scrambled to get inside, everyone grabbing a dish and running. I was worried that the mood would be ruined, but we actually had an amazing time -- the storm created a shared experience that we still laugh about.

FOR SOMEONE NEW TO HOSTING, WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D GIVE?

At most events, nothing is going to go 100% right all the time. Plan as much as you can, focus on creating a warm inviting atmosphere, and don’t stress about the little things. Guests will feel the authenticity and energy from you and that is what they'll remember. Also, don’t forget to have a good time. This is your hard work, remember to take a minute and soak it all in.

Whether

style meets technology at home

Create sleek and stylish solutions for smart home living.

Interior designer Betsy Kraft has helped many local homeowners discover the sweet spot where technology and style meet. From hidden charging stations to artfully placed speakers, she's mastered the art of making modern conveniences feel right at home in both historic houses and contemporary properties.

"Technology is inevitable," Kraft says, and she sees that as an opportunity. Since opening her firm in the spring of 2021, she has developed creative strategies to integrate simple smart home features in ways that enhance both function and beauty.

Her approach starts with thoughtful placement. "Being strategic about the placement of technology and where you put things is key,” she notes. A gallery wall becomes more functional when it artfully incorporates a thermostat, while pop-up outlets in kitchen islands appear only when needed. For entertainment spaces, she favors framed TVs that double as art when not in use, seamlessly blending into the room's design.

Kraft emphasizes adaptability when working with technology. "Don’t lock yourself into today’s technology," she advises. “You want to create things that are timeless that don’t require long-term investments.” For instance, some homes are equipped with once state-of-the-art sound systems that have since become obsolete

and difficult to replace. Instead, she recommends choosing timeless, high-quality pieces and designing spaces with flexibility for the future.

Music lovers may appreciate Kraft's audio solutions that she incorporates into her own space. "There’s always music on in our home, so having speakers throughout the home -- some that look like other things like wall art -- it's a really seamless way to incorporate something that's completely functional," she shares. These systems can fit effortlessly into any room while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic.

For family organization, Kraft suggests creating dedicated tech zones. "These new family digital calendars -- don't put it on a random wall but maybe in a nook," she recommends. "Lean into that, and make that your command center -- create a dedicated space that will solve the problem of what that tech is for."

Kraft's projects often showcase inventive solutions. In one home renovation, she transformed an underused basement nook into a functional

Remote Controlled Blinds.

workspace. "We cut out underneath the desk so there was a space for electric and a place for the printer so it's out of the way," she explains. Simple yet intentional updates like these maximize functionality without disrupting the overall design.

Window treatments also provide opportunities to seamlessly incorporate technology. Kraft is a fan of motorized shades that combine ease of use with elegance. "There are great resources for motorized window treatments and shades that don’t have to be complicated," she says.

Kraft recommends that local homeowners looking to bring tech-savvy ideas into their spaces explore options at shops like Artful Lodger for streamlined furniture and Crutchfield for cutting-edge home technology. And for those feeling

overwhelmed by the array of smart home options, Kraft suggests starting small. Whether it’s incorporating hidden charging stations, designing a command center, installing a door camera, or adding pop-up outlets, even minor updates can make a big impact. "Technology is something that's necessary. Just be careful, strategic, and creative about how it's incorporated into your everyday life," she advises.

Twelve years ago, Jamie Waller and her husband arrived in Charlottesville with their newborn and toddler, ready for a new adventure. His job had brought them to this vibrant region of Virginia, and it didn’t take long for Jamie to realize that Charlottesville was special.

Now, Waller is an established real estate agent with a deep connection to the area. She specializes in Albemarle and Nelson Counties, where she’s not only a Realtor but a resident, which gives her unique insight into the communities she serves. Living in Glenmore and owning property at Wintergreen, she can speak firsthand about the area, the neighborhoods, and all the little things that make this a special place to

HELPING BUYERS FIND

For Waller, helping clients is about finding the right fit. "We typically begin with a comprehensive tour, gradually narrowing down to the areas that best align with their preferences and needs,” she said. “This personalized approach ensures clients find the community that

clients with a competitive advantage in discovering potential homes that meet their criteria,” she said. “In this highly competitive market, being able to capitalize on those relationships often leads to off-market deals with homes that aren’t made available to the public.”

SELLING A HOME, THE RIGHT WAY

When working with sellers, Waller knows the importance of a well-prepared home. “In today’s competitive real estate market, buyers are increasingly drawn to turnkey properties -- homes that are move-in ready without the need for immediate repairs or renovations. Staging a home can also drastically increase the appeal of a home to potential buyers.” Sometimes, that means working with a stager to make sure everything looks its best, making the home as inviting as possible.

A COMMUNITY-FOCUSED APPROACH

When she’s not working, Waller is fully involved in her community. With two teenagers, she spends a lot of time at local sports events, supporting her kids and the organizations they’re involved in. "Having a 12 and 13-year-old lends itself to spending a lot of time on the sidelines of many different community sports organizations and trying to support them in any way that I can," she says.

Charlottesville is, without a doubt, the best place I’ve ever had the privilege to call home.

WHAT’S CHANGED IN THE MARKET

Waller has seen some changes in the market over the years, especially since the pandemic. “I’ve observed a notable increase in buyer interest toward communities that offer amenities such as walking trails, pickleball courts, and communal gathering spaces.”

For buyers, she stresses the importance of being prepared. Having your mortgage pre-approved or

“I am also proud to support several local nonprofits through volunteering and financial support.”

THE BEST PART OF HER JOB

At the end of the day, Waller says the best part of her job isn’t just finding clients the perfect home -- it’s watching them settle into life in this community. “One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is witnessing new homeowners acclimate to our community, exploring and enjoying all that the area has to offer,” she says. Whether she’s working with outof-town or local buyers, or helping someone sell and move on to their next chapter, Jamie Waller’s easygoing approach and knowledge of the area make her an invaluable guide.

HOUSEPLANTSThe Perfect Roommate

AN INDOOR GARDEN SANCTUARY

There are many science-based benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment.

The ubiquitous houseplant has long been a cautious curiosity for many. Comments such as “I don’t have a green thumb,” or “I can’t keep anything alive,” have echoed through the rooms and hallways of almost every home in America. Well, it’s time to dispel all the mistruths about whether houseplants are beneficial and to lay the foundation for a little oasis of green happiness in the corner of every home!

By the way, you don’t really need a green thumb as there are plenty of hard-to-kill houseplants that can survive any level of neglect! And remember not only do houseplants look pretty, they also decrease stress and anxiety, increase happiness, and bring a sense of joy and relaxation to every room.

Houseplants make us feel better about ourselves in many ways because they allow us to care for them and we reap the rewards of that love. No one is alone when you have a houseplant, as they are our forever listeners. Yes, some people actually do talk with their houseplants all day long! There are

many science-based benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment. Aside from reducing indoor air pollutants and increasing humidity in the home, house plants have been shown to reduce mental fatigue, accelerate the healing process, as well as improve productivity and focus.

Pothos, spider plants, lady palms, yucca, and succulents are so pretty and easy to grow. It is no wonder that we have seen a revival of indoor gardening trends.  Instagram is teeming with photos of incredible indoor “living green” vignettes that show us all how clever we can be when decorating with house plants! All you really need is to a pick a place in the home that has the best light and pick your plants.

Think outside of the box when it comes to decorating with houseplants. Look for underused spaces. Use mixed and matched pots of different sizes and shapes. Turn a shelf into a plant display. Go vertical with some hanging plants or an antique ladder. You can even group some of your favorite plants together into a single large decorative pot.

Signature large plant displays anchor the most well-designed rooms in America and it’s all there for us to look at, learn from, and bring into our own home. Whether combined into a single large decorative pot or clustered together in a corner, always remember the key to any house plant décor is to have a thriller, a tall plant usually with a strong color and form; filler plants that literally will fill the pot covering all the soil; and a spiller plant that trails over the edge of the pot. Try any combination of your favorite plants or a tried and true combination of a fiddle-leaf fig, a prayer plant, and a string of pearls.

No matter how you look at it, houseplants improve our lives in many ways. Indoor gardens provide us an alternative way to commune with nature and to reconnect with the living world. We all benefit from the additional life that houseplants bring into our homes. In this crazy world of ours, wouldn’t be it nice to return home to your own personal indoor greenspace.

Happy gardening!

INNOVATION MEETS

ARTISTRY

Kitchen design has entered a transformative era, where innovation meets artistry to create spaces that are not only functional but also personal and sustainable. With advancements in technology, materials and craftsmanship, today’s kitchens are tailored to meet the evolving needs and tastes of homeowners.

According to interior designer Laura McCroskey, kitchens today are about more than just cooking—they’re an expression of personal lifestyle.

“Kitchen design has entered an exciting time where the possibilities feel limitless,” says McCroskey. “For me, the design process starts before lines are ever drawn on a construction document. I believe in creating spaces that enhance life, both functionally and aesthetically. The design process begins with a discussion about what a space needs to do, and what aesthetic will bring a spark to the homeowner. I also firmly believe that when

PHOTOGRAPHY BY NATE SHEETS

THE HEART OF THE HOME

designing a kitchen, one should walk out a recipe to make sure everything is in the right place to suit one’s lifestyle. Cooking zones are imperative to a well-designed kitchen.”

Modern kitchens emphasize zoning, or the creation of dedicated areas for preparation, cooking and storage, to enhance workflow and functionality. These zones not only improve efficiency but also contribute to a cohesive and visually appealing aesthetic.

Cutting-edge rendering software, utilizing technology similar to that used in gaming, allows homeowners to visualize their dream kitchens in hyper-realistic detail. While these tools inspire creativity, McCroskey advises balancing ambitious ideas with practical implementation to achieve the best results.

Technology, sustainability and customization are driving the revolution in kitchen design. Advanced appliances are at the forefront, enhancing convenience while aligning with a growing emphasis on eco-friendliness.

“From vacuum-sealing drawers that preserve food and reduce waste to smart appliances controlled by your phone, the emphasis is on efficiency and sustainability. Functional storage built seamlessly into marble countertops and oversized workstation sinks are making daily tasks easier and more enjoyable. Thoughtful features like composting

compartments and advanced food preservation methods reflect a broader effort to minimize waste and reduce environmental impact.”

Custom cabinetry that maximizes every inch of space minimizes waste while optimizing functionality.

“Forget the limits of traditional cabinetry. Blind corners, tiny nooks and hidden areas are now designed to maximize storage. Automated drawers and pop-up outlets are becoming increasingly common, marrying convenience with sleek aesthetics.”

Design trends have also evolved, becoming more flexible to reflect individual tastes.

“While white kitchens remain timeless and black adds drama, bleached woods continue to be popular. Style trends are no longer as rigid—whether you prefer modern, transitional, or traditional designs, you can create a kitchen tailored to your unique vision. There’s no limit to what you can achieve with today’s tools and technologies. The goal is to create spaces that resonate deeply with the people who live in them.”

The kitchen is the heart of every home and represents a space of endless possibility. Whether your aesthetic leans modern, farmhouse or somewhere in between, the tools and technologies available today make it easier than ever to bring your vision to life.

KEY SECRETS FOR A SPARKLING HOME

A SPRING KIND OF CLEAN

TIP #1 Freshen up the Kitchen

A fresh, clean kitchen impacts the entire home. To freshen up the sink, Kim says, “Run hot water while pouring in equal parts of baking soda and white vinegar through the disposal. Follow with a few drops of blue Dawn Dishwashing soap to cut away any grease buildup. Sharpen the disposal blades by running cooler water and ice through it. For a fresh smell, grind a few slices of lemon, lime or orange, removing any seeds first.”

To clean everything else in the kitchen, including counters and stainless-steel appliances, use a microfiber cloth and a solution of 2-3 drops of Dawn mixed with water.

TIP #2 Spruce up the Living Room

The living room also deserves special attention. Kim says, “Start by pulling furniture away from the walls, vacuuming and dusting behind it. Make sure you dust air vents as well. Then, pull all of the furniture cushions off to vacuum underneath and in crevices. It’s always good to rotate and fluff cushions too.”

To banish dust from your furniture, Kim suggests using a good microfiber cloth that is slightly damp instead of furniture polish, which can leave a build-up on furniture that actually attracts dust.

TIP #3 Brighten up Windows

Brighten up your whole home by intentionally focusing on the windows. “Homeowners often forget about the inside of the window,” says Kim. “They dust the blinds or the shutters, but when the blinds are pulled up, the windows often have dust or a film on them.” Kim suggests cleaning the inside of the windows on a cloudy day to reduce streaks. “A good glass cleaner with a microfiber cloth works really well. If you still have streaks, try using a little bit of rubbing alcohol.”
