hile summer is not officially here until June 20th, the telltale signs are definitely around us.
With my oldest son starting tee-ball this year, it brought back many great memories of my childhood. In the town where I grew up, the little league association hosted a skills assessment day, then a draft. If you have spent any time around me, you probably know that Kansas City Royals blue runs through my veins. As an eight-year-old, you can imagine what it was like when Dennis Leonard, who pitched for the 1985 World Championship Royals team, called my house to say the team he coached had drafted me. Along with Dennis’ son Ryan, there were several other boys of former Royals players on our squad. We even had practice in John Wathan’s backyard, who managed the Royals during that period. You want to talk about fun? How about when we had our year-end party at coach Leonard’s house and Bo Jackson was doing cannonballs off the diving board! Hundreds of hours spent playing catch with my dad in our backyard. I can still hear the locust and tree frogs some 30 years later. Fast forward to this year. I was so excited to sign my son, August, up for his team and even volunteered to coach. The night finally came for our first team meeting. Before we left the house, I went ahead and Googled the address of the field—Armstrong Park. I was surprised I’d never heard of Armstrong Park. Nothing was showing up on Google Maps, so I finally called the Lafayette Parks and Rec number. After a little more research, it all hit me. I signed my son up for a league in Lafayette, INDIANA. Wow! Needless to say, there was a bit of disappointment and embarrassment on my end. While the Internet brings many conveniences, the human brain still is needed at times. I hope the good folks of Lafayette, Indiana, have found a replacement coach for their kids. Thank you for reading and enjoy the issue! Andy Manz

ON A ROLL CONVEYOR BELTS DELIVER SUSHI-RAMA’S FUN PLATES
ARTICLE ALLYSON REEDY | PHOTOGRAPHY COLLEEN KELLY
J
apan has gifted the world with some pretty fun exports— karaoke and Nintendo, anyone? —but none more tasty and enjoyable than sushi. And when you put that delicious sushi on a conveyor belt and send it snaking through a multi-colored dining room? Well that’s just gold. Yummy, fishy, revolving gold. Kudos to Jeff Osaka, of Osaka Ramen and the now-defunct Twelve, for bringing conveyor belt sushi, long a trend in Tokyo, New York and San Francisco, to the Mile High City. SushiRama, in case you couldn’t tell by the name, is all about fun. The narrow, double-decker space exudes happiness, from its floor-to-ceiling Warholian sushi art to the bright plates making the rounds on the stainless steel belt. Those spinning, humming plates are cleverly color-coded, ranging in price from $3 (for magenta) to $5 (sky blue). Each plate has between two to four pieces of nigiri or rolls, and when something you like rolls by, you grab it. Pop off the clear domed top, have your chopsticks at the ready, devour, repeat. Favorites are the Pumpkin Dragon and Chrysalis rolls (both yellow plates; $3.50). The former is stuffed with sweet Japanese pumpkin tempura and marinated kelp and crowned with avocado and honey. The Chrysalis showcases shrimp tempura and crab on the inside, while unagi, avocado and kiwi topped it all off.
20
Cherry Creek Lifestyle | June 2016
Other interesting rolls twirling their way through the eatery: Hot Pico (spicy poke topped with Pico de Gallo—yes, really); Salmon Tartar (salmon with—wait for it—capers); and Hama Rama (crab mix, scallop, yellowtail and shishito peppers). You may be surprised how quickly you acquire a tower of empty, brightly hued little plates. Although the per-plate price is very reasonable, it can add up if, like us, you grab one of each. Not everything comes via belt; salads and soups can be ordered via conventional wait staff, as well as the drinks. Aside from a short selection of beer and wine, you'll find four frequently changing cold sakes and a well-curated (but also short) cocktail list. While the sushi is definitely fresh and fun, Sushi-Rama is more about the novelty of an amusing dining experience than the food itself. For authentic, meltin-your-mouth rolls, Denver has better (and pricier) options. But for sheer fun and entertainment, there’s no better restaurant in town. Try it out for a spin.

The Atlantic Bluefin tuna is a fast and large fish (average size 6.5 feet, 550 lbs.) built for endurance. There is still no direct evidence of their oceanic migrations. According to Seafood Watch, a well-known sustainable seafood advisory list, eels are an endangered species. eresa Davis, Allied ASID, is the owner of Post 31 Interiors—a Denver-based interior design boutique that fuses elements of
the Midwest and eclectic mountain style design along with worldly artifacts. Often mixing layers of texture and interest, Davis strives to strike a delicate balance between beautiful finishes and unique combinations of high and low design features, while incorporating her clients distinct personalities. With the homeowner preparing to send her last child off to college and feeling (very) ready for a “grown up” home herself, Davis says her client’s wish list involved having a home that incorporated some special antique pieces she’s collected through years of travel, along with new, modern ones to update the space. She also wanted a good mix of textured neutrals with additional bursts of color. Post 31 began by selecting different organic materials: linens, cottons and leathers in creamy, warm ivory tones. Davis uses a lot of neutral fabrics in her work so textural elements played a vital role to this visually interesting assembly. “We choose a Kravet tribal Ikat fabric as our inspiration piece which contained the palette our homeowner loves, leaving the door open to add another color if wanted,” says Davis. One other key piece of intel from the homeowner: Navy holds a special place in her heart! “We set out to find the perfect navy fabric as our inspiration that would provide the large bold scale we were looking for, and decided to pair it with lavender. Our workroom constructed a graphic linen navy and ivory stripe by combining the two fabrics we used horizontally as pillows and roman shades. It really gave a punch of modern to the traditional,” says Davis.
ENTRANCE WITH IMPACT (FOYER)
Layering attractive textures and colors, Post 31 merged important pieces the homeowner had with new modern, sophisticated accents to achieve a distinct feel.

BRINGING LUXURY TO LIFE WITH TERESA DAVIS
1 2 3 4 5
Fresh flowers and greenery bring ongoing organic life to a space. Original art and one-of-a-kind pieces bring a special artful, handcrafted luxury. Find at gallery tours, art fairs, Etsy, or frame some children's artwork. Beautiful candles don’t only smell fabulous—the dancing light they provide is magical! Light one every day! Layers of soft texture that beg to be touched: throws, pillows, wall hangings, ottomans, fabric napkins. They add fluff and comfort to hard surfaces in a home. Precious time and memories created with family and friends is the GREATEST LUXURY we can give ourselves and others.
OPEN EATERY (KITCHEN)
The open space is wonderful for family time and entertaining. Because this space is so open, it was important to create harmony by combining colors and elements throughout the two areas. Davis says, “Our lighting choices in the kitchen area bring the focus above with sparkling metallics and glass, so even when the lights are not on, there is sculptural interest to see.” 38

COCKTAILS, ANYONE?
“We used the top of the piano for a bar, holding an array of beautiful glasses, an ice bucket and noteworthy wines for easy entertaining. Adding fresh flowers, fragrant candles and small bowls of nuts and chocolates allows for all five senses to be involved,” notes Davis. MUSIC NOTES
Since the family’s children grew up playing the piano, Davis felt the beautiful curved wall seemed like the natural place for it. “The colorful abstract art by Dallas Artist Kelly O’Neal hanging next to it pulled together our color palette, while adding the sparkle of metallic,” she says.
LIVING IN THE LAP OF LUXURY
“When we found the luscious lavender cowhide, we layered it on top of leather bound sisal. The lavender cowhide rug added the vibrant bit of color we needed,” says Davis.
SCULPTED BEAUTY
The sculpture is a gentle nod to the homeowner's career as a yoga instructor.
