Festivaaaaal! F
JULY 2016
or many die-hard music fans, summer means festival season. Living in the state of Colorado, we are privilege to some of the best in the country right out our back door. In the fall of 2001, rumors started swirling about a four day music festival that was to take place the following June somewhere in the backwoods of Tennessee. The names that were being thrown out had the entire jamband world a buzz. Widespread Panic, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Phil Lesh & Friends, Moe., and the list kept going and going of the powerhouses. Needless to say, when the announcement of the first annual Bonnaroo Music Festival came out, we were all in. The majority of our group left out of Kansas City in a Chevy Suburban, with an enclosed trailer in tow. The map said eight hours to Manchester, Tennessee. As we approached our destination, the excitement was quickly extinguished as we came to a bumper to bumper traffic, some twelve miles outside of the festival entrance. Our driver at the time was my best friend (now brother-in-law), Austin. Austin has many attributes, but patience in traffic is not one of them. After not moving for a few hours, the frisbee and watermelon fun was starting to wear off. When most people look at a grass median dividing the highway, the thought of driving down it wouldn’t normally cross their mind. Austin Chamberlin saw this as untapped opportunity. When he told us his plan to simply drive down the middle of the median and pass everyone, the reaction was to “GO FOR IT!” Austin proceeded to ease the Suburban over to the shoulder, and off into the grassy wide open. We began to pick up some speed and pass hundreds of cars. Although we were driving on grass, what lay beneath was lumpy, uneven ground, with ruts and drainage culverts. As we bounced down the way, the trailer we were pulling actually became airborne a few times. Our plan was actually working! The bystanders (still not moving) had mixed reactions. Some cheered, some laughed, some gazed in awe. As the time came for us to merge back into traffic, there were far more four-letter words and middle fingers being lobbed at us than cheering. As friendly as the hippy crowd is, I soon realized the only way we were getting back in that line of cars was by cold hard cash. I pulled a crinkled up ten dollar bill out of my wallet, ran up to a semi-truck driver, and we were back in business. Certainly a memory we won’t soon forget. Wherever your musical journeys take you this summer, enjoy the ride!

eed to even out your virtue-to-vice ratio? Is your motivation to finish a pint of ice cream stronger than your motivation to finish
a 5K? Well, we’ve got the skinny on the one healthy habit you need to pick up: Running. Not only will running make you happier, healthier and smarter today, but in the long — ahem — run, too. Read about the benefits of running, and then head outside to experience them for yourself. • It Makes You Happy. We’ve all heard the term “runner’s high,” and now science backs it up. A study in Physiological Behavior showed that running boosts brain reward pathways similar to addictive (read: dangerous) drugs. Running has also been proven to protect against anxiety and depression. • It Makes You Skinny. OK, so you already knew that running burns major calories, but guess what? Running revs up your metabolism so much you burn more calories even after you stop running. Bonus points for running high-intensity intervals. • It Makes You Healthier. A partial list of diseases regular running can help prevent: heart disease, certain types of cancers, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke. Running won’t keep you alive forever, but it will keep you alive longer. • It Makes You Smarter. A collection of studies shows that running for 30 minutes three times a week leads to faster information processing, greater mental longevity, better decision making proficiency and a longer attention span. It’s no wonder that many CEOs say they wouldn’t be where they are without running.

hile walking through Capitol Hill, it was hard for me to miss the dazzling lighting and upscale ambience of the new kid in town, Hudson Hill. Under the design and vision of New York native, Jake Soffes, Hudson Hill is an experience that is like a home away from home, and surprisingly, the East Village-inspired joint fits right into the bohemian vibe of the neighborhood. Just across the street from Capitol Hill, staples such as Benny Blanco’s Pizza and Wax Trax Record Shop, Hudson Hill is introducing a new aesthetic to the community, which is very welcomed. Who doesn't love revamped classic cocktails, a mouthwatering selection of cheeses and nibbles (they even feature an adult-style gourmet grilled cheese) and a vast vinyl collection that spins all night?
"I wanted this place to feel like you were coming home when hanging out,” says Soffes, “like in your living room.” 24

“It’s all a very comprehensive experience,” says Soffes, “But really, what it comes down to is creating that environment where you’re really just able to enjoy your interaction with whoever you’re spending time with.” Mission accomplished. The cozy leather seating, lofty exposed ceilings and glowing lights attract new patrons and already-established regulars nightly. Soffes sandblasted rafters and stripped away sheet rock to expose 110-year-old brick. He went with a mid-century modern look with refreshing pioneer elements like his collection of Navajo rugs that are on display. When all is said and done, the comfortable hangout was born. "I wanted this place to feel like you were coming home when hanging out,” says Soffes, “like in your living room.” The cocktail names are a fun homage to his Denver and New York roots, the beer list includes seasonal and special release brews, and the wine, well, it's a wine and cocktail joint so they know what's good. “You’re not going to get a list and be intimidated by it,” says Soffes. Standouts include the creamy tequila and coconut offering called The Green Hour (yes, it's very green), and don't forget to ask about the daily cocktail and album pairing. During my visit I enjoyed the Bonita Apple Brandy and Midnight Marauders by A Tribe Called Quest. All of my senses were satisfied. Soffes can be found personally chatting with loungers while the turntables spins its tunes. Sitting at the Douglas fir table or at the bar, the experience is louder than words: a solid drink and cosmopolitan comfort. July 2016 | Cherry Creek Lifestyle

Porters vs. Stouts. Really, what is the difference?
TASTE OFF
PHOTOGRAPHY MICHAEL RAINERO HOST DENVER BEER CO.
PORTER /pôrdər/ 1. dark brown bitter beer brewed from malt partly charred or browned by drying at a high temperature.
STOUT /stout/ 1. a kind of strong, dark beer brewed with roasted malt or barley.
What’s the difference between a porter and a stout? This is a question that has come up on multiple occasions, especially in a beer-driven city like Denver. And it’s surprisingly not an easy question to answer. Not even Merriam-Webster dictionary can straighten this one out. If you ask your local bartender, you may want to order another round because the answer probably will take a while. What we know is that porters surfaced in London sometime around the 1800s when brewers decided to make their lives a little easier by combining a mixture of styles from almost empty kegs. Thus, the porter was born. We also know that 'stout' is derived from the term a ‘brown stout,’ which simply meant the strongest version of a porter. So at one time they really were one in the same. We set out to answer this age old question and found ourselves, deliberating at Denver Beer Co.'s Barrel Room with three goals in mind. • To determine what defines a porter and what defines a stout. • Is there a difference in taste? • Finally, which well-known and not-so-well-known local favorites will be best in show? So the tasting begins... 32

THE FINDINGS Eight tasting glasses and two pretzels later, the judges defined porter and stouts with three words each and answered our initial questions. Porter | Chocolate-y, Malt-Forward & Roasted Stout | Dark, Heavy & Grainy After a bit of a discussion, it was also decided that the defining characteristics of porters and stouts are very interchangeable and are brewer dependent. It's a vast category and, as someone said it best, "The first stout could have been a porter." So you can call a stout a stout or a porter and the consumer won't be able to tell the difference. Ice Cream! ARTICLE ALLYSON REEDY PHOTOGRAPHY COLLEEN KELLY

enry James said that the two most beautiful words in the English language were ‘summer afternoon,’ and while that pair is pretty stellar, we’d like to sub-
mit two more that rival the nostalgia and happiness that a summer afternoon inspires: ice cream. On their own, the words are alright at best, but placed together — the frosty ice leading the soft, sweet cream — and you’ve got magic in a bowl. Or cup. Or cone. Or on top of a cookie. However you scoop it, ice cream evokes all the sticky sweetness that life offers. We taste tested the latest and greatest frozen treats in Denver — we know, our job is hard — so you can enjoy the best, most delicious ice cream on a summer afternoon. Bliss. (ICE) CREAM OF THE CROP Item numero uno on your summer bucket list: get a lick, scoop or bite at these three superior scoop shops.

Frozen Matter This brand-new, Uptown microcreamery is the only licensed dairy plant in Denver, which means that the small batch flavors crafted here are as fresh as they come. Think cow-to-cone flavors like Caramel Cloud Brulee, Challah Good! French Toast and Voodoo Magick (made with Voodoo doughnuts). Gerry and Josh, the duo behind Frozen Matter, are truly taking ice cream to the next level, having studied vigorously at ice cream school (yes, that’s a thing), using on-site pasteurization and insisting upon the highest-quality, organic ingredients. And did we mention they have a liquor license?
That’s the Spirit! Frozen Matter combines two of our very favorite things: ice cream and alcohol. “We’re pretty unique in our spirit pairings,” owner Gerry Kim says. And by ‘unique,’ we think she means ‘genius.’ The libation pairings are carefully chosen to complement the flavors of the ice cream, and we were pleasantly surprised by how well booze played off the frozen treats. Our favorite is a scoop of Almond Cluster Funk paired with a shot of Dolin Blanc Vermouth. Or maybe the Strawberries & Cream with Aperol. Or the Valrhona Chocolate with Royal Cognac. Just get an Uber, and you’ll be fine. 530 E. 19th Ave., Denver, FrozenMatter.com

WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM
(CON TI N U ED)
Little Man With its shop housed in an iconic, 28-foot-tall, 14,000-pound cream can, this is a cheerful, throwback ice cream experience that any frozen treat aficionado must have. While the ice cream is top notch — there’s more going on at this happening Highlands gathering place than just dessert; they host live music, poetry slams, movie nights and even carnivals all summer long. 2620 16th St., Denver, LittleManIceCream.com
The Inventing Room Down to a Science You probably think you know ice cream. You’ve been eating it out of the container — er, reasonably-sized bowl — for as long as you can remember. But unless you’ve eaten liquid nitrogen ice cream, complete with billowing smoke clouds, then you can’t claim your connoisseur card quite yet. We’re talking extra-creamy, dessert-with-a-show style ice cream. And you can only get it at Denver’s The Inventing Room, helmed by the resident mad scientist of sorts, Ian Kleinman. “I’ve always been extremely excited about science,” Kleinman says. “My main two sources of inspiration are my grandfather and Willy Wonka.” Stepping into his downtown, brightly-hued ice cream lab, we think it’s safe to say that Mr. Wonka (and his grandfather, whose welding helmets and hand-crafted tables make up much of the décor) would be proud. The menu looks fairly traditional, with popcorn, ice cream sandwiches and sundaes innocently adorning the lineup, and it’s once you place your order that the real entertainment begins. Here’s how it works: Kleinman pours a (liquid) ice cream custard blend into a thermal walled bowl. He then pours liquid nitrogen — kept at an astounding -321 degrees — over the ice cream to quickly freeze it. This creates teeny tiny ice crystals (the smaller the ice crystals, the creamier the ice cream); not to mention that show-stopping smoke that keeps on spilling from your now-frozen treat, even coming out of your mouth, dragon-style, while you eat it. Kleinman has been running his science-class-meets-culinary-school catering operation for nine years now, and he opened the brick and mortar dessert shop last Halloween. If you believe in magic — or better yet, if you don’t — this is some dazzlingly unique ice cream that you’ve got to check out. 40

Henritze explains, “We moved in, lived there for a year to understand the property, the light, the house and to be patient with the what the house and garden could become.” Partnering with Ariel Gelman of Connect One Design, who shared the same vision of incorporating the outside with the inside, enabled them to give the entire property a very connected feel regardless of where you stood — inside or out. With a ca. 1950 before yard including tall grass surrounded by pink concrete, Henritze and his wife found the backyard feeling “like a big empty space” instead of an extension of the house.

They came up with old materials seen throughout the neighborhood, like strip flagstone, and incorporated new materials, such as dark concrete and ipe wood, to give everything a modern and inviting feel. Henritze adds, “We also took the entire yard down about 12 inches to make the house look like it was floating on the landscape, brought in new modern and structural grasses, planted some trees to accentuate the private spaces and very little grass. “ Three cherry trees offer a canopy of shade to sit under and take in a good book. He goes on to say, “Ariel was very interested in creating spaces that grabbed your attention. Outside of the bedroom is a large planting of just one type of grass to provide a focused theme. In another part of the yard, we planted several different grasses to provide a layering of height, color and blooming time. It all goes to Ariel’s intent of providing focal points, privacy and CONTINUED >

making the yard feel much larger than it is. But not by planting hundreds of different plants, instead using very few to create a calming and simple, yet complex, environment.” Fire & Water Running the depth of the yard is a water feature you can hear throughout the house. (It actually runs under the deck to give the illusion it’s running through the house.) Off to the side of the home, a bubbling water station creates a gentle ambient noise. “We have a main fire pit directly off the patio, next to the dining/seating area that is flush with the patio that we gather around after dinner,” says Henritze. “Now it feels like a true extension of the house, where you can have a private conversation in one area, a dinner party in another, casual seating and sit around a fire pit late into the evening.” GET THE LOOK

hether you’re traveling by plane, train, car, boat or maybe even by gondola, vacations are the perfect time to slip into something comfortable and relax. As Rags Consignments shows us, you truly can
have both style and comfort while catching some much-needed R&R. Margaret Miner, co-owner of Rags Consignments (along with husband Ken Larkin), has more than two decades of experience outfitting Colorado women in fashionable looks for less. Rags has stores in Boulder, the Highlands and Cherry Creek, as well as a warehouse location opening in Boulder in early summer. If you've booked your tickets for a mountain getaway or a tropical retreat, you’re probably already making a list of things to pack. Good news: We did the work for you. Here are tips on what to pack, and what to leave behind. Heading into the mountains for a few days of light hiking and campfires? Layer up. Think about versatile tops, nubby wool sweaters and, of course, plaids that can be tucked in, twisted or fashioned in multiple ways and that will look great with whatever bottoms you switch into and out of throughout the day. Leather ankle boots are a must and warm socks are a given. Pack light and leave the fitted, fancy clothes at home. For a beach haven, slip into light and airy linen and woven oversized cotton tops that will breathe. Bonus: Linens and cotton can serve as cover-ups during the day or cute, flowy tops at night. You’ll need a killer bikini (or two), flat sandals, a summer hat and sunglasses. By night, a simple, embroidered cotton dress, sexy heels and that new sun goddess glow is all of the style you’ll need. If you’re looking for inspiration, check out these fashion picks courtesy of Rags.
