Editor's Letter
Sweet September. A
s summer days of Slip and Slides and Popsicles are now relegated to weekend activities, we look to one last holiday to close out the summer. For our family, September in Colorado is a memorable time. Last week marked the three-year anniversary of our relocation from Kansas City. Aside from missing our family, the decision to head west was relatively easy. Selling our house and two businesses while being pregnant with our third child was not quite as easy, but where there’s a will, there’s a way.

There are many things to love about Colorado in September. As the warm summer nights give way to crisp fall temperatures, the transition in wardrobes has always been enjoyable for me. This issue was truly a community endeavor. Where else can you round up an Aston Martin and a $60,000,000 jet for a photo shoot in less than 24 hours? We are so thankful for everyone who pitched in their time and resources.

Around Town GOODBIRD KITCHEN COMING TO STAPLETON
LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS HANDCRAFTS FOR LOCAL CHARITIES
GoodBird Kitchen will bring its award-winning fried chicken and fixin’s and Post Brewing Company beer to Stapleton in the spring of 2016. Dave Query, chef/owner of the Big Red F Restaurant Group, has signed a lease on a fantastic space in the new Stanley Aviation Marketplace. GBK will be a smaller, more streamlined version of The Post Brewing Company in Lafayette. It will offer their famous fried and rotisserie bird, local farm fresh sides, homemade pies, and award-winning POST beers. Guests will order at a counter prior to being seated and full service will be available from that point forward. Dining rooms will feature the same cozy Colorado Mountain-meets -Michigan Roadhouse feel that has made The POST so comfortable for its diners. Prices will start at $7 and top out at $14 for platters, and buckets of chicken and big family meals to-go will be available from walk-up to-go windows. The Stanley Marketplace is a budding urban marketplace on the borders of Stapleton and Aurora. It was once the Stanley Aviation headquarters – where airplane ejector seats were engineered and manufactured – and when it reopens in 2016 it will be a community hub and gathering space with numerous like-minded businesses, a park, a beer hall and more. In addition to GBK, there will be Tootsies the Nail Shoppe, Kismet, wax, Stanley Beer Hall, Endorphin and Kindness Yoga. PostBrewing.com
Lauren and Keith Whittier, founders of TenTables.org, initially launched a large giving campaign back in December 2014, selling a limited edition set of handcrafted farm-style tables made from reclaimed snow fencing from the Western plains. Over the course of the inaugural TenTables campaign they donated $5,000 worth of proceeds from their sales to local and national charities. This summer, a unique set of tables made from 130-year-old Cypress planks from an old horse barn, set atop a handmade steel railroad truss base, is the featured item. This set of 10 tables is only available while supplies last; 10 percent of proceeds from each purchase of an eight-foot dining table, will go directly towards funding outdoor adventures for young adults affected by cancer. The mission of First Descents is to “empower them through conquering legitimate outdoor challenges to push their limits and face their fears.” To learn more about the Old Wood Soul "TenTables" program and their partnership with First Descents, head over to TenTables.org.

ART OF FASHION CAMPAIGN Neiman Marcus is pleased to announce The Art of Fashion campaign featured in the September edition of the book, which was created, photographed and styled entirely by women. The issue’s celebration of women is in keeping with Neiman Marcus’ “Make Some Noise” brand platform aimed to celebrate bold, modern women who are trailblazing in the fields of fashion, art, food, music
and technology. The cover of the book features a collage of all the women who were involved in the production of the publication. To capture the disparately imaginative offerings of The Art of Fashion, Summerton shot some pieces in a romantic, almost surreal setting, but others in a much simpler environment. The overall effect is a striking balance between modern and romantic, feminine and masculine. Summerton’s work has appeared in magazines including W, Vogue Italia and Nippon, and i-D, as well as in campaigns for, among others, Anna Sui, Burberry, Diane von Furstenberg, Dior, Kate Spade, Miu Miu, and Yves Saint Laurent. Designers featured in the fall 2015 campaign includes: Akris, Alexander McQueen, Brunello Cucinelli, Burberry Prorsum, Carolina Herrera, Chanel, Chloe, Christian Louboutin, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Emilio Pucci, Etro, Gucci, Manolo Blahnik and many more! AWAY LUXURY WEEKEND AT THE BRADLEY BOULDER INN ARTICLE EMILY O'BRIEN | PHOTOGRAPHY ELLE WHITESIDE
T
his luxurious inn knows how to treat its guests like royalty. The Bradley Boulder Inn makes for a romantic getaway far from the hustle and bustle of city life. Escape for a long weekend to a place nestled into Boulder’s thriving downtown area; stay in one of its 12 exquisite guest rooms, all equipped with private baths and high-quality, high-thread count linens. Select rooms are adorned with deluxe amenities including in-room fireplaces, soaking tubs and charming Juliet balconies with mountain views. Spend a couple of relaxing hours tinkering away on a Liberty puzzle or cozying up with a novel next to the stone fireplace on the main floor. All of the art on the walls is original and continuously revolves through the year, supplied from the vaults of Mary Williams Fine Arts and the talent of our local artist community. (Be sure to visit the in-house library to borrow a complimentary book or movie.) Later head out to discover one of the many options Boulder has to the offer such as an art fair on Pearl Street Mall, football game at CU Boulder, an exhilarating hike up the Flatirons or simply slow down and chill at a brew pub after biting into the town’s scrumptious food scene. To say The Bradley Boulder Inn is clean would be a huge understatement; immaculate is more like it. Leery travelers take heart. No old comforters from the 80s here, and you’ll never wonder if it’s been washed or not. Everything is spotless, not to mention well made—from the house itself to the furniture (by Bob Timberlake) down to the bed pillows (feather or hypo-allergenic). And since children under the age of 14 are not permitted, you won’t need to worry that you’ll end up staying next to that family. Request a room with a fireplace and a spa tub, and they’ll even put some sparkling wine and chocolates in your room for your special occasion; everything's included in one rate so there won’t be any surprises on your credit card. Nosh on the gourmet breakfast that’s whipped up fresh every morning, munch on the cookies and then indulge in glass of merlot during the daily Wine & Cheese hour. All of this makes for an ideal getaway for anyone looking to explore the best of Boulder while immersing yourself in the luxury of time at this sublime boutique inn. Ditch your car in the free parking lot and then travel the town on foot. It’s all just steps away. And everything is complimentary from the health club privileges, breakfast and Wi-Fi to the free tea, coffee and home-baked cookies and cakes. What’s not to like? 14

AIR CLEANING PLANTS ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY COLLEEN KELLY
H
ouseplants are not only aesthetically pleasing, they can be beneficial to your home environment as well. House plants help bring a sense of life into a home, and act as natural air purifiers. The houseplants pictured are: 1. Dracaena 'Hawaiian Sunshine' 2. Aglaonema 'Tigress' 3. Arboricola 'Green Mini' 4. Philodendron Panduraform 5. Rubber Tree Ficus 'Yellow Gem' These houseplants are very versatile, and can survive in both bright and low light conditions. Following these simple instructions ensure that your plant will live a long, fruitful life. • Use an organic nitrogen based granular fertilizer once every two to three months. • Do not over water - all house plants need to dry out for at least 24 hours in between waterings. • When 'upshifting,' do so in small increments to avoid root rot and fungus gnats. • Using beneficial nematodes in the soil to organically kill any soil dwelling bug can help with fungus gnats and other parasites. • Buy houseplants that are kept in natural light to ensure the best survival rate for your plant.

OUTFIT: Mariella Tank and Freya Flow Wrap from Mika Yoga Wear (MikaYogaWear.com), Zella printed "live-in" leggings from Nordstrom
1. Walking Push-Ups: Start in a push up position with hands on the upper stair and feet on the bottom. Do one push up, then at the top take a step out with your arms and legs, then do another push up. Do 10 to the left and 10 to the right.
22
Cherry Creek Lifestyle | September 2015
2. Step-Down Squats With Side Leg Lift: Facing sideways on the edge of the stair, take a step down with the outside leg coming into a squat position. Use the standing leg to lift yourself back up and then lift the outside leg using your outer thigh. Do 15 on each side.
LACEY SPRUCE Red Rocks is one of my favorite places to work out. Not only are the stairs killer, but you've got a gorgeous view to look at while you sweat it out! This 20-minute circuit is great when you combine with running up the stairs at Red Rocks for the perfect combination of strength training and cardio. A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE OUTFIT:
Mika Yoga Wear has quickly become one of my go-to's for cute workout wear. Their fabrics are so comfortable, flattering, and come in so many bright colors and prints. Designed for movement, they never lose their shape, and are functional for everything from running to yoga to circuit training and beyond. Zella, Nordstrom's in house activewear brand, is another one of my favorites. They always offer trendier styles and the live-in leggings are so comfortable that you truly do want to live in them! Mixing in fun prints with basics is a great way to look forward to working out because, let's face it: having good workout gear will make you want to show it off! MYBORINGCLOSET.COM
3. Tricep Dips: Face the stage with your hands on the edge of the stair. Walk your legs out straight. Bend your arms to lower yourself down, then squeeze your triceps to press back up. For more of a challenge, try alternating lifting your legs with each dip. Do 15 reps total.
4. Step Ups: Facing the stairs, take a step up with one leg, bringing the other leg in toward your chest (use your abs!). Step back down and repeat on the other side. Do 24 total. (12 on each side.)
Repeat this circuit as many times as you can in 20 minutes. For an added challenge, run up the stairs, do the circuit, then run down the stairs and do the circuit. Your body will thank you!
Take Flight into Fall Fashion ARTICLE RYAN WAGNER

I
t’s that time of year to fall in love with. What’s not to love? Turning leavings, cozy weekends and finally the opportunity to break out the sweaters and scarves. But don’t start layering like crazy quite yet. Fall in Colorado can be a bit warm. And as the linen and cotton jackets give way to their woolen counterparts, here are a few things to bear in mind: Stick with a light-weight wool -- it has a nice clean look, but is still relatively breathable. And opt for something in a darker hue (we like dark blues this year). Skip the tie when you're out and about, find a great looking pocket square, and you're ready for anything. CONTINUED >

When I first spoke with the editors about ideas for this feature, I figured I’d be styling a local home, taking it from good to great. This was before I saw the photos of the Harriman family’s Metro home. Quite clearly, the owners of this 2003 A-Frame home didn’t need my help. They have a distinct style identity and present it in just the right way, including: 1. Balancing of bold design choices with neutral elements. 2. Incorporating their personal identities into the decor. 3. Combining different styles into an eclectic yet cohesive presentation. 4. Bringing an editing eye into each room so that it all works. This feature discusses some of what they did so well, and how you can apply it to your own home.

POWDER ROOM:
BIG STYLE: The dark navy blue of the
chairs is a fresh and modern neutral that goes with everything while remaining a slightly unexpected choice. BABY STEPS: Incorporate new colors into
easy-to-replace accessories like pillows.
BIG STYLE: This is the room that deserves a big, bold color that always contrasts beautifully with white porcelain.
ENTRY >> BIG STYLE: The painted stair risers add a
fun and modern contrast with the traditional bannister and entry. BABY STEPS: Painting the stairs or the
bannister a high gloss black adds drama and elegance. 38

TABLESCAPE
A tablescape is how items (books, candles, flowers, boxes, coasters, etc.) are artfully arranged on a table, and it’s so important to finishing off a room’s look. BABY STEPS: Tablescapes can take some real practice to get just right, so start small with a beautiful candle atop your favorite coffee table book on one side of the table, an orchid on the other.
DINING ROOM

BIG STYLE:
Pairing the traditional furnishings (matching table and chairs, breakfront) with bold walls and crisp white trim keeps this formal room fun and young. BABY STEPS: Keep walls neutral and paint the picture rail a daring shade.

BIG STYLE:
Create your own unique art display, as they did using musical instruments. BABY STEPS: Materials can be anything interesting or special to you and your family: vinyl records, textiles, mirrors, branches and other ‘found’ objects, decals, empty picture frames, etc. BIG STYLE:

Arranging your bookcase into a stylish display containing numerous shelfscapes is, for a modern home office, a non-negotiable. BABY STEPS: No baby stepping for this look. You can do it! BIG STYLE:

For the salads, I like to start with cooking the bacon. I fry the bacon in my cast iron skillet, and let the pieces cool in paper towels. Once cool, tear the bacon into pieces and set aside. While the bacon is cooking, chop the lettuce and the tomatoes. Since this is a chopped salad, I like to cut the lettuce thin at about a 1/2 of an inch long by a few inches wide. For the chicken, I like to pull off all the meat by hand so it is nice and shredding. Be sure to
discard the skin for a more lean salad. To make the dressing, simply hand whisk the ingredients into a bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste. Then add a small splash of water to get your desired consistency. 1 to 2 tablespoons will do the job. Now you are ready to assemble! The trick to the Mason jar salad is wet on the bottom and dry on the top. Start with the dressing. Then add tomatoes, pecans and chicken. Then add the first type
of lettuce, romaine, followed by blueberries, goat cheese and bacon. Top the jars off with a little more lettuce. You are all set with a week’s worth of salads! You can also pack these salads for an afternoon in the park with family and friends. Simply keep the jars chilled in the cooler and pour into a bowl to enjoy.

Fall brings out the best of designers' new collections, but to translate it into our own closets can be difficult. Denim is always a staple when the leaves begin to change. These are some of the best new fall pieces to vamp up our love of denim (and to not be stuck in the same old jeans)." -- Jessica Wenger 50
