ast year, John and I attended the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce Holiday Party. We arrived as a “petless” couple, well after the starting time, as we were balancing our attendance at two functions that evening. After we mingled with the other guests and enjoyed some refreshments, we decided to peruse the tables of items in the silent auction.

At the very end of the last table were photos and bios of several puppies that were available for adoption. We casually commented about how cute they all were…and then we went about socializing, getting our photo taken with Santa and sampling a few festive adult beverages.

Since we had arrived a bit late, we felt it necessary to “close down the house” and we ended up staying until the end of the party. Just as we were getting ready to leave (I’m talking just seconds before our departure), two little black “lab-ish” looking puppies, one wearing a red collar and the other in a blue collar, darted out from beneath one of the tables and were running and playing in the party room. I looked at John (after I’d had three chocolate martinis) and said, “I know you love dogs; let’s take one of these puppies home with us, tonight.” John looked at me like I had five heads and said, “Really?” Fast forward 20 minutes later and we were driving home with our new little girl, Veddie, sitting on my lap, as I gently held her red collar.

For our “lucky dog,” who was adopted at the very last minute that night, it was all about timing— a few chocolate martinis sure didn’t hurt her cause. Though she still chews up everything she can get her paws on, Veddie is an amazingly loving and entertaining dog; turns out, John and I, along with our nine children, are really the lucky ones!

CALLING TEEN ATHLETES FOR JCC MACCABI GAMES TEXT-A-THON AND COMPETITION The JCC Maccabi Games®, an international athletic competition for Jewish teens, is coming to St. Louis in 2016, and the J is actively recruiting athletes (ages 12 – 16) to compete in more than a dozen sporting events next summer. “We anticipate about 1,200 teens will come from across the country and abroad to compete in a dozen different individual and team events at venues across the St. Louis area,” says Fanchon Auman, 2016 Games Director. "We want a big St. Louis delegation to welcome our outof-town guests.” Aumen says the goal is 250 athletes and two events were held, in October, to help hit that number. Team and individual tryouts for sports will take place at the Marilyn Fox Building in Chesterfield on November 15 and November 22. Athletes must try out for baseball, basketball, dance, flag football, soccer, softball, swimming and volleyball. Tryouts are not required for golf, table tennis, tennis, or track & field, but athletes must pre-register and attend an information meeting. There are many other opportunities to Get in the Games in 2016, from hosting outof-town athletes, to sponsoring, to serving on one or more of a dozen committees it will take to plan and execute this thrilling event. “This is a phenomenal event to support. We can help anyone who is interested find a way to get involved,” Auman says, “and it will take more than 1,000 volunteers to make the Games happen.” “The JCC Maccabi Games has played an 12

integral part in my life, and is the highlight of my year, every year,” says Dave Roberts, 2016 Games Overall Co-Chair and Coach. “Maccabi has established itself as the foundation of my Jewish identity, and it has provided me with lasting friendships, strengthened my Jewish values, and presented a platform for mentorship. Having the opportunity to continue to serve and represent our community as a member of Team St. Louis is a distinction I respect and value. Maccabi is a tremendous program.” More information about the JCC Maccabi Games is available online, at MaccabiStLouis.org, Facebook.com/STLMaccabi.

GIRL SCOUTS OF EASTERN MISSOURI RECEIVES $1 MILLION INVESTMENT An organization that has supported Girl Scouts for decades has further demonstrated its commitment to impacting the landscape of our communities by investing $1 million to develop today’s girls into tomorrow’s leaders. The generous gift to Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri will advance its mission of building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. $750,000 will be invested in Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s permanently restricted endowment, while $250,000 will fund the new Community Troop Program, allowing more girls to receive the traditional Girl Scout troop experience. “Our homes, communities and businesses need strong leaders,” says Bonnie

Barczykowski, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri CEO. “Investing in girls is an investment in the future. This gift will make an immense difference in the lives of today’s girls and for generations to come. We are so grateful for this support. More girls will now have the opportunity to develop the skills to achieve their dreams.” The donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, said, “Helping the young people in our region is so important, and our investment illustrates our confidence in the work and efficacy of Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri. Today’s girls will determine the future of St. Louis and the surrounding areas, and through the work of Girl Scouts, we expect a bright one.” About Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri: Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri is committed to building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. MONSANTO FUND AWARDS GRANT TO GIRL SCOUTS OF EASTERN MISSOURI Girl Scouts participating in the FIRST® robotics program just got a little more help, thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Monsanto Fund. Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri has more than 250 girls participating in FIRST® this year. Working in teams, the girls complete challenges by designing, building and programming robots that perform simple tasks based on real-world issues. The grant will support this year’s 43 teams by helping with robotics kits, registration fees, team transportation and more. The cost of a team participating for one year can range between $1,000 and $9,000-- depending on the level of competition. The Pink Programming Pandas, a team of eight girls in fourth, fifth and sixth grades, is now in its second year participating in FIRST® Lego League, a subset of FIRST®. Last year, the team received first place in project presentation. Team co-coach Leslie Steinmeyer said the team got financial help from Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, which provided them with a robot, field kit, and participation and competition fees.

“The girls have learned so much,” Steinmeyer says. “They’ve learned how to work together and keep trying after they’ve made mistakes. Last year, if their program didn’t work, they learned to troubleshoot and try again. At competition, they were up against more experienced teams, and came out in fourth place out of 24 teams—that just made their confidence skyrocket.” The Council’s participation in FIRST® showcases its commitment to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), one of its three programmatic focus areas. The organization also collaborates with top businesses and organizations in the area to provide premier STEM programming for its girls.

Managing Diabetes to Prevent Complications EXPERT ADVICE FROM A CERTIFIED DIABETES EDUCATOR ARTICLE JULIE POZZOLI, RD, LD, CDE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

H

aving diabetes means the body has trouble using glucose (sugar.) Problems begin with insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Normally, after food is eaten, more insulin is produced to allow the sugar to enter the cells, allowing us to use our food as energy. With diabetes, you may not make enough insulin or may not be using insulin effectively, causing the level of sugar in your blood to rise. High blood sugars for long periods of time can cause damage to your eyes, heart, kidneys or nerves. Managing diabetes can prevent these complications. Blood sugar can be controlled by balancing the foods you eat, being active and taking medications that are prescribed by your doctor.

DIET

Meal planning can have one of the biggest impacts on managing your blood sugar. The three major nutrients found in food are carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Carbohydrates are the nutrients that raise blood sugar the most. Examples of high carbohydrate food sources are starches such as: bread, pasta, rice, tortillas, cereals, crackers, fruits, fruit juices, milk, yogurt and sweets. Non-starchy vegetables (such as carrots, green beans, broccoli, salad greens) have a small amount of carbohydrate while starchy vegetables (such as potatoes, green peas, corn) have higher amounts of carbohydrate. For optimal blood sugar control, it’s often better to eat smaller amounts of food over five to six meals instead of eating three large meals. While proteins and fats do not affect your blood sugar the same way as car-

16

Chesterfield Lifestyle | November 2015

bohydrates, regulating portions of these foods can help with weight management and heart health. Working with a dietitian is a great way to find out which foods would be the best choices for you and how much should be consumed at meals and/or snacks. ACTIVITY

Any activity such as yard work, cleaning your house or going for a short walk can help lower blood sugar levels. Activity can boost your body’s use of insulin, assist with weight management and improve heart health. Adults should set a goal for 150 minutes of activity per week. To assist with weight loss, this goal should be increased to 240 to 420 minutes per week. It’s important to start with a lower goal and increase gradually. Adding strength or resistance training to your routine at least twice per week will also help. It’s a good idea to check with your doctor before beginning an exercise program. MEDICATION

There are many medications available to assist with managing blood sugar. Each medication works on different parts of the body. Medication may increase insulin sensitivity by preventing the liver from producing too much sugar or by causing carbohydrates to break down more slowly. Some medications are taken orally and others are given by injection. Your doctor can work with you to decide which choice is best for you. Diabetes is a chronic disease and the responsibility of managing your blood sugar belongs to you; with so much information available it may be difficult to know what fits your lifestyle best to achieve your health goals. Working with a Certified Diabetes Educator can be an invaluable resource to help you understand diabetes management and help you decrease your risk for complications. November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. St. Luke’s Hospital will be hosting Diabetes Update: What You Should Know from Head to Toe on Wednesday, November 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. Activities include vendor booths, an opportunity to speak with certified diabetes educators, a cooking demonstration by St. Luke’s executive chef and a panel presentation. RETRIEVERS & FRIENDS 18

I

Putting Hearts Together, One Rescue at a Time ARTICLE MARY SHAPIRO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Chesterfield Lifestyle | November 2015

n late 2013, some long-time, experienced volunteers of a golden retriever rescue group got to talking about the idea of joining forces and beginning a journey that led to the creation of Retrievers & Friends of St. Louis, a rescue organization based around the use of foster homes for dogs. The non-profit, no-kill, all-volunteer group, officially founded in January of 2014 has no "brick and mortar" headquarters; instead, it made up of about a dozen "foster" homes, says Chesterfield resident Janet Hass who is vice president of Retrievers & Friends. The group has successfully adopted out over 115 dogs since it's formation. Their motto is “Putting Hearts Together, One Rescue at a Time.” They rely entirely on donations from supporters and fundraising events – for example, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, volunteers will have dogs available for adoption at the Pet Supplies Plus store at 15311 Manchester Road in Ballwin. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, they’ll have another event at Kennelwood Pet Resorts, at 4 Clarkson Wilson Center in Chesterfield. These are among regular adoption events that the group holds. “The benefit of a foster based rescue is invaluable, because people adopting dogs have the benefit of dogs coming from a home environment, so they can see how the animal behaves in a home setting and can more accurately define the dog’s personality traits – and it makes the transition to their forever home less stressful,” Hass says. “Every cent of every dollar collected goes directly to the care and placement of the rescued dogs.” Hass says the agency’s decision to concentrate on retrievers is based on the fact that these are popular dogs often over-bred to meet demand via puppy mills, backyard breeders and others. “As a result, shelters intake more dogs than they can handle and dogs that are in homes where they are determined to be a bad fit face abuse, neglect and abandonment,” Hass says. “Although we focus on retrievers, our volunteers are committed to placing every homeless dog, regardless of breed. These dogs represent the 'friends' in the name of the organization.”

In addition to breeders and animal control/shelters, rescued dogs also come from owner surrenders. One dog came to them after a person went to their vet to have a three-year-old dog put down because the family was getting a puppy. “All of our dogs receive a comprehensive veterinary examination, all the necessary shots (including rabies), micro-chipping, spaying/neutering and are heartworm tested,” Hass says. “Each rescue dog is started on heartworm and flea/tick preventative medications. Any medical conditions we discover are treated before the dog is made available for adoption. Volunteer dog trainers work with the dogs.” The group’s adoption donation fees are $300 for puppies eight weeks through 11 months old; $275 for dogs 11 months through seven years old; or $125 for older dogs. Donations help offset costs associated with veterinary care, training and dayto-day expenses incurred. “We focus on highly adoptable dogs, which don’t stay long in foster homes we often get a dog adopted in about a week,” Hass says. “Adoption stories are heartwarming. People tell us they’re so lucky to get a dog. We’re animal lovers, and it’s so rewarding to help make a match. We adopted out three dogs in the last week that were on "death row," and we likely now have about nine or 10 dogs ready to adopt out, with about four getting adopted this week. But there are always more coming in. People often reach out to us. We generally focus on finding adoptive homes for dogs in the bi-state area, but we can bring in dogs from Arkansas and other places, meeting them half way. We just picked up an Australian shepherd from Cuba, Mo.” All told, Retrievers & Friends has almost 30 volunteers, involved with various aspects. “For instance, we have a group that does concession stand duty at the Family Arena, where we take donations in a jar,” Hass explains. Hass admits she’s been animal lover her whole life. “It’s so rewarding to place a dog that is without a home through no fault of its own,” she says. Her group works with volunteer dog trainers. “We have some dogs that may need a little polishing with basic training,” she says. Volunteers are always needed, and there’s an application on the group’s web site. Regular general fund donations help keep the group going - $15 will allow for micro-chipping a dog, $25 will allow for vaccinating a dog, and $50 will cover the cost of heartworm medication for six months, Hass says. The organization always needs other kinds of donations, such as dog leashes, Kong and other dog toys (preferably made in the U.S.A.), dog food (grain free foods made by U.S. based companies only), dog treats (like Milk-Bone), dog crates (plastic or metal and of all sizes), and pet store gift cards. Companies are encouraged to use the group as a fundraising opportunity for employees. Homes interested in fostering should complete the application available on the website. The need for foster homes is huge. “Foster homes are what allow us to rescue more dogs,” Hass says, adding she even has recruited some of her coworkers at Aegion Corporation in Chesterfield. “Anyone fearing they’ll become too attached to a foster dog should remember that they’re giving a dog a leg up in life – they will get used to the dogs moving to a good home, and fostering is more rewarding than you can imagine.” To become involved or get more information on Retrievers & Friends of St. Louis, visit their Facebook page or their website at RetrieversAndFriendsOfStL.com, call 314.750.7484 or email GeneralInfo@RetrieversAndFriendsOfStL.com. K-9 Unit Training at Chesterfield’s storage masters Storage and Stopping Crime ARTICLE MARY SHAPIRO | PHOTOGRAPHY BRIAN WOFFORD

T

wo-legged clients bring a lot of valuables to “sit and stay” at the Storage Masters business in Chesterfield valley. Some special fourlegged visitors are not only honing their law enforcement skills but using their presence to deter any possible illegal activities at the facility—located at 16824 Chesterfield Airport Road. Brian Wofford, operations manager for Storage Masters, recently starting working with local police to allow K9 unit/police dog training at his facility. Wofford says he originally heard online about another storage business in California advertising that K9 training was taking place on site. “I thought that was interesting,” Woffard says, though adding he had no idea on how to get such a plan going locally at his business. He had recently joined the West St. Louis County Chamber of Commerce, where he wound up making a canine connection, entirely through a happy accident. “The chamber is one of the best professional organizations I’ve dealt with,” Wofford says. “And during a chamber luncheon I went to, I started talking about this K9 training with some people, including Lori Kelling, the chamber president. Lori said her husband Brad is involved in doing a lot of K9 training for the area, and she put me in touch with him.” Sgt. Brad Kelling works as K9 unit supervisor with St. Louis County Police. “We’re always looking for new businesses and other places to train the dogs – we have no one dedicated training location, so the dogs don’t get used to one place,” Kelling says. Wofford offered all three of his St. Louis area Storage Masters facilities but the Chesterfield valley site wound up being the most convenient. The dogs came to Storage Masters for the first time a couple months ago, Kelling says. “Our K9 training group includes 10 to 20 dogs, with handlers, from St. Louis County Police as well as police departments in Pacific, Woodson Terrace, Ferguson, Eureka, and even as far away as Fredericktown and Ste. Genevieve County. We do training every Tuesday for eight hours, switching between locations. It includes training on basic obedience, narcotic detection, area and article search, building search, suspect apprehension, and so on.”

Wofford says he was impressed that various breeds of K9s are used. “I think we had about 15 dogs out at the Chesterfield valley location. They also had a bomb dog that came out. All the dogs get a chance to do different things. For instance, they’ll hide things in different spots, and, when the dog alerts on an item, their reward is a toy to play with.” Wofford says the Storage Masters site includes a variety of different places to hide things. “We have cars, boats, RVs and more for the police to use. The dogs don’t go into storage lockers unless the lockers are empty.” For Wofford, it’s not just interesting for him to watch the training to take place. “Our local police officers have been going through a lot lately, so anything we can do to help with training, to do something to make things easier for them and so they know we support them, is something we definitely want to do,” he says. He’s impressed at the dedication of the dog handlers. “Officers live with the dogs 24 hours a day,” Wofford explains. "The dogs work about 10 years and then, when they get too old, they let the officers keep the dogs.” The situation is an ongoing benefit for Wofford’s business. “Seeing the dogs here lets customers – including families with kids - know they’re safe here,” he says. "Also, it lets people know that, if they’re thinking of doing anything illegal and funny, they need to go someplace else, because we don’t want that in Chesterfield.” Wofford loves just having the dogs on the property. “I’ve stayed and watched the training, and I think the officers have gotten tired of me asking questions and taking photos,” he says. Plus, the effort is

“When a business steps up and lets us come there to train, it’s invaluable, and everybody benefits.” an investment in his family’s future. “My 16-year-old daughter Ashli, a junior in high school, wants to be a police officer someday. She’s been able to meet officers, including female officers, and gotten to pet the dogs and learn how great a police officer’s job is.” Kelling expects the K9 training will take place at Storage Masters likely on a monthly basis. “With all the unlimited areas to hide in and move people around to and large location with a lot of odors and scents, Storage Masters is a good challenge to the dogs,” he says. "Support from the public is what makes our job possible, so we’re always looking for new places like this to train the dogs. When a business steps up and lets us come there to train, it’s invaluable, and everybody benefits. For example, the public sees we’re there and police can be a deterrent to any illegal activities.” The K9 dogs – including German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers – have also been involved in training at the Chesterfield Sports Fusion laser tag facility on Long Road, as well as St. Louis County’s Faust Park in Chesterfield, Kelling says. “It’s great to have cooperation from places like that." Anyone interested in allowing police K9 training to take place at their business can contact Kelling at bkelling@stlouisco.com. November 2015 | Chesterfield Lifestyle

f you're looking for a dentist who understands the importance of personalized dental care and a family-friendly atmosphere, Chesterfield Valley Dental Group is the place for you. The practice is locally and family owned by Dr. Robert L. Rahm DDS. Dr. Rahm was born and raised in the Chesterfield area. He, his wife, Amy, and their three boys are residents of Chesterfield. After earning his bachelor's degree from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Dr. Rahm received his dental degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry and dedicates many hours to continuing education each year to understand the best techniques to treat his patients. “The practice is locally owned and Dr. Rahm will be around year after year to provide complete dental care for you and your family. We are here to build relationships with our patients and our community,” says Amy Rahm. Being raised in St. Louis, Dr. Rahm is a Cardinals fan and grew up on Ted Drewes frozen custard during weekly visits to his grandmother's house. He is an active member of his church and he and his wife enjoy volunteering there. When he's not busy with dentistry or church, he can be found wrestling with his three boys or playing an intense game of street hockey with them in the driveway.

Chesterfield Lifestyle | November 2015

Dr. Rahm met Dr. Goldman, the former owner of the practice, in September 2014 and found their philosophies in treatment and patient care to be a great match. Dr. Goldman felt the same way and was making plans to bring Dr. Rahm and his practice, Woods Mill Dental Care, to Chesterfield Valley Dental until Dr. Goldman’s unfortunate cancer diagnosis. At that time, he asked Dr. Rahm to take over care for his patients. Dr. Rahm has been practicing dentistry for over five years and is dedicated to continuing Dr. Goldman's legacy. At Chesterfield Valley Dental Group you will receive individualized attention from a caring team. Their team believes the best way to ensure the long-term dental health of their patients is to involve you in your treatment process. Dr. Rahm and his skilled and friendly team will work with you to create a care plan that meets your individual needs and goals. “Dr. Rahm is passionate about patient care and he takes pride in his practice; personal care of each patient and family and maintaining an office environment of excellent customer service are both important to us,” says Amy. Education about your dental care is a powerful tool. Knowing what to expect can help ease dental anxiety, and understanding how dental issues develop can give you a better understanding of

how to prevent them from getting started. If you ever have a question about your dental care, don't hesitate to ask; Dr. Rahm and his team will take the time to answer all of your questions and provide you with detailed information.

Amy says, “Dr. Rahm is a conservative dentist who does not ‘over diagnose.’ Because he owns the practice, Dr. Rahm is in complete control of patient care plans and is focused on presenting patients with treatment options to take your smile further at your own pace and comfortability.” CVD offers comprehensive dental care for patients of all ages. Unleashed ONE DOG'S WAGGING "TAIL" ARTICLE VEDDIE GIRL | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

hen Mom told me we were going for a ride, I have to admit I was a little nervous. When she is taking me to Eberwein Dog Park, she always tells me so. We passed right by the road to the dog park and I was starting to worry that we were going to the vet. Much to my delight, we pulled up to Treats Unlimited; I caught hundreds of delicious smells in the air as Mom opened the door to the shop. I learned that Treats Unleashed is the only family-owned, from scratch pet treat bakery in town. They start with eggs and secret nutritionist-approved recipes to make the freshest treats and cakes in town. From holistic foods to toys made in the USA; they take pride in the products they have chosen for dogs like me. They have taken the time to research the products they carry and the companies that make them. Not only does Treats Unleashed have food and fun, they also provide opportunities for me to look and feel my very best. Are you looking for a professional pet grooming experience unlike any other? At Treats Unleashed you will find award-winning groomers that minimize stress, for my friends and me, by scheduling appointments throughout the day so that we don’t have to wait. Does your dog need a bath like I do? Treats Unleashed has self-service wash stations. They provide the tubs, all natural shampoos and conditioners, ear and eye wipes as well as the towels and the dryers-- Everything you need for a clean pup and they clean up the mess!

Chesterfield Lifestyle | November 2015

Now enough about baths and grooming; I came for the treats! You can’t believe how good it smells in that place! My tail was wagging so fast and hard with excitement that I had to take a rest when we got home—I think my tummy full of delicious, wholesome treats helped me to take a nice long nap. At Treats Unleashed, they develop and bake their own line of treats – right inside the store. Favorites such as: Peanut Butter Barkers, Cheese Quackers, Apple Cinnamon Hearts and Blueberry Soft Bites had my tail wagging. My parents are happy about their treats, too. Why? They bake treats from scratch daily, cut each treat by hand and decorate them with care. The recipes were developed by a family member of the owners who earned a PhD in food science and a career in animal nutrition; he also serves as an adviser on their pet food selections. The treats have been specially formulated for dogs like me, using only human-grade ingredients. No artificial preservatives, chemicals or refined sugars are added making the treats low in fat and sodium compared to other treats. SPECIALTY TREATS

Their delicious specialty treats are baked and handdecorated for all occasions. With an in-house bakery, they can customize treats and cakes to fit any occasion. At Treats Unleashed, the possibilities are endless; they bake treats for each season, holiday and sports teams. All of the specialty treats are dipped and decorated in vanilla yogurt, peanut butter and carob along with colored yogurt coatings. BIRTHDAY CAKES

On my birthday I hope I get a bone-shaped cake; it is a Treats Unleashed tradition. You can choose from three cake sizes to fit your dog perfectly – a 6-inch round cake, a 6-inch paw print cake or 10-inch bone-shaped cake. They are moist cakes made with human grade ingredients and “frosted” with peanut butter, yogurt or carob. These fresh cakes are then finished by piping your message on by hand. Since all cakes are custom made especially for your dog, they request that you please order at least 24 hours in advance (Did you catch that, Mom?). CONTINUED >

History 101

BARN CATS IN CHESTERFIELD'S HISTORY ARTICLE AIMEE PELLET | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

R

arely does a week go by that my inbox doesn’t see at least one forwarded cat video—a kitten cuddling with a puppy, a cat getting dizzy on a motorized vacuum or a feline playing the piano. When did we become so “cat-obsessed?” Cats were domesticated at least 4,000 years ago in Egypt; it is thought that cats may have become domesticated around the same time as wheat and barley. This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. My relatives rarely talked about barn cats, even though they were always a present feature of every generation. In Chesterfield, cats were brought to farms for one purpose: rodent reduction—to catch the mice that invaded grain fields and barns. For anyone who thinks that this is work for a species otherwise known to be, well… a bit on the lazy side, one just has to watch a cat chase a mouse to realize that this is an infinitely entertaining endeavor for the cat. It isn’t a quick simple chase, but rather the cat can chase, catch and let a mouse go in a nearly endless cycle of torment for the unfortunate creature. As a farm kid, barn cats also serve to teach you many life lessons. One summer we had a picnic at our farm and every kid was far more mesmerized by watching a cat give birth to her litter than by any activity my parents had planned. I’m convinced the saying about a cat having nine lives originated with a barn cat. It was a working farm; there were dangers for everyone. Unlike humans, the felines would maneuver their way out of sticky situations with nary a scratch.

Despite barn cats’ utilitarian purpose, they did sometimes bring the same enjoyment domestic kitties brought. When I was going through the archive of the Chesterfield Historical Commission, I came across what is now an iconic image of a farm woman milking a cow and turning the udder so that an excited barn cat could take a drink. If you need proof of the widespread nature of this ritual, there is even a smartphone app called “Thirsty Cat” that mimics this game! As a little girl you want to bring every cuddly thing into the house and make it your own. I even gave some names that I remember to this day: Maddie, after the character in Madeline; Cumquat, because of his tabby orange color. One year a barn cat delivered her litter under the bay window of our house. While she was still nursing the litter there, we had a particularly bad storm and like most 7-year-old girls, I was worried that the kittens would get too cold and wet. I begged my mom to let me bring them inside. She firmly told me that the mother would take care of them—it was her job and she instinctively knew how to keep them warm. “Mother Nature just knows.” Years later when I had a sweet, but very lazy cat of my own I used to wonder if she knew in the back of her little head how lucky she was to be able to lounge in a sunbeam all day or if she secretly longed to be a barn cat with a mouser’s job. Parting Thoughts

Abby and Emma DOGS AND NEW BABIES WORDS PATRICK LATOUR

A

baby is a new addition to the home that comes with many changes and sacrifices. Time and focus are now divided even more and it is extremely easy to overlook the needs of others in the household when you suddenly have a brand new being for which to care. We all know that it is difficult for siblings to adapt to the adventurous situation of a new brother or sister but we often forget about the feelings of our beloved pets. Ok, maybe not so much the goldfish or the turtle, but if you happen to have a dog or a cat, you know exactly what I mean. A baby is a major change for our little furry family members and they must learn to adapt to the situation as well. Our dog, Abby, was no exception the day we brought home our daughter Emma from the hospital. Abby was the "baby" of our family for years. Aside from looking slightly different than the rest of us and the extreme language barrier, I’m fairly confident she thinks she is human. When we painted and decorated the nursery, Abby would sit in the room as if it were going to be her new room. People say that dogs know when a woman is pregnant and that may be true; if it is true, Abby simply ignored that little fact and went about her normal rituals... afternoon walks, sitting by the steak cooker (the gas grill), cleaning up after the kids in the kitchen and snuggle time on the couch with Daddy. Ah yes, life for baby Abby was good but little did she know, all was about to change. Abby is no stranger to having babies visit the home because my wife and I have nieces and nephews; Abby also knew that at the end of the day, the babies went home. Emma was a different story obviously. When we arrived home with Emma, Abby was more excited to see her mommy since my wife had spent the last three days in the hospital. You would

think “Mommy” had been gone for years the way Abby acted when she walked in the door. She was so excited to see my wife, she overlooked the fact that we brought a baby in with us; that soon changed. When Abby finally noticed the baby, she was a bit apprehensive but she didn’t seem to mind us giving the baby so much attention. After all, the baby was going home at the end of the day, right? Well of course baby Emma was home and it’s a good thing animals can’t speak because we surely would have been in for it! Why did you bring this baby home? Why does this little human get to sleep in my new room? Why does she get all of my mom’s and dad’s attention? When is it my turn to have a bottle? When is this baby going to go home? Again, when is it my turn to have a bottle? Why is Daddy cuddling with the baby instead of me? This baby better not get any steak! Needless to say, Abby was extremely jealous of baby Emma. After a few weeks of everyone adapting to the big change, things began to settle down a bit and Abby realized that baby Emma was not going anywhere. One night, as Emma slept in my arms, Abby quietly inched her way way over and to us and snuggled against me on the couch. As time went on, Abby slowly warmed up to baby Emma and understood that Emma was a part of the family, too. Don’t get me wrong, Abby still gets a little jealous from time to time but overall, she is adapting well to being a big sister--albeit a furry one.
