pring is here! All around our Chesterfield community things are looking a little bit greener. It’s a time of new beginnings; nature is coming alive. Buds are forming on the trees, grass is looking lusher and the birds certainly seem to be rejoicing over these changes with louder, longer chirps and songs. It’s an awakening of sorts. As we notice additional greenery around us, we can also stop and think of what things we can do to be more “green;" this will help preserve our wonderful planet and all the life forms on it. In our “Think Green” issue we are celebrating all that is GREEN. Thinking “green” entails engaging in habits and behaviors that have the sustainability of the Earth in mind. Recycling everything we can rather than merely disposing of reusable items and repurpose-able trash is an easy and effective strategy that we all can employ. Chesterfield’s trash is picked up by Republic Waste Services Inc.; the company is featured this month because they are experts in making garbage “Green.” Read about their fascinating processes, local recycling facility and green initiatives on page 14. Planting a garden is a very enjoyable way to add natural, green beauty to your little piece of the Earth. Melinda Myers is an expert on gardening and horticulture and she shares simple steps to create a low maintenance flower garden that has lasting beauty without rigorous upkeep. Learn how to get started with the simple methods she shares in the article, “It’s Bloomin’ Easy!” on page 18. The concept of “Green” can represent living things, newness and doing good things for our planet. So then, as the human beings on our planet, let’s each commit to doing something new for the sake of this “Good, Green Earth.” It is our hope that you can gain some new “green” ideas from reading this issue. Are you going to make an effort to recycle everything that can be recycled...plant a garden… or BOTH? Send pictures of your new “green initiatives” for inclusion in a future issue.

W
aste service provider Republic Services Inc. has been heavily invested in recycling and other green initiatives, in Chesterfield and other cities it
serves, since the mid-1990s. The company is involved in sustainability projects across the country, including food waste, school recycling, community recycling rewards, renewable energy and landfill habitat projects. Stephen Herring, marketing recycling coordinator for Republic Services Inc., said the company “has been the proud service provider of trash and recycling services in Chesterfield since the city first awarded the municipal solid waste contract in 1990.” The current rate for once-per-week curbside trash and recycling pick up is $40.53 per quarter. In addition, a 10 percent senior citizen discount is available for residents aged 65 and older. Optional services include yard waste collection (which is collected on the same day as trash) and recycling. In Chesterfield, the company serves more than 12,000 homes. The recycling program accepts materials including: plastic containers, metal containers and all types of paper. “Through the years, we have consistently provided outstanding ser-
vices and been an engaged member of the community,” Herring said. “Republic Services is the only waste hauler in the St. Louis area to own and operate its local recycling facilities,” Herring said. “The largest of our recycling facilities is located in Hazelwood,” Herring said. “This facility processes over 300 tons of recyclable material each day.” Republic also has transitioned a majority of its truck fleet from diesel to CNG (compressed natural gas) - Chesterfield was the first city to be hauled exclusively by Republic’s CNG vehicles. “CNG vehicles are 90 percent quieter than a typical diesel vehicle and offer 95 percent fewer tailpipe emissions than diesel vehicles,” Herring said. He praised Chesterfield which, since recycling services began in the mid 1990s, has consistently been one of Republic’s leading cities when it comes to diverting materials from landfills. “The average rate of recyclable versus trash is around 25 to 30 percent in the St. Louis area and Chesterfield is around 40 percent diversion (through recycling) yearly,” he said. “As for specific recyclables, I can’t provide a breakdown as the material is all combined at our sorting facility. For tonnage over the past three years, Chesterfield has recycled over 14,000 tons of recyclable material (about 4,700 tons per year).”

REPUBLIC SERVICES INC. (CON TI N U ED)
The City of Chesterfield and its residents are always looking for new opportunities to be environmentally sustainable, Herring said. “Starting Saturday, April 2 of this year, Chesterfield residents will have the ability to recycle textiles curbside,” he said. “This program has been made possible through a partnership between USAgain and Republic Services and Chesterfield will be the first city to have this service available in the Midwest. On the first Saturday of the month, USAgain will pick up any bagged textile material placed at the curb, ensuring

the materials stay out of landfills. A reminder call a few days in advance will be made by Republic Services call blast software.” Every year, Republic Services participates in various community events all over the St. Louis area to help with similar recycling efforts. “In Chesterfield specifically, we were involved in Taste of St. Louis, Chesterfield Earth Day and America Recycles Day, just to name a few,” Herring said. “Last year, Republic Services participated in over 100 community events and provided tours of our recycling facility to over 700 people.” Anyone interested in taking part in a recycling material recovery facility tour can contact Herring at: SHerring@RepublicServices.com. Tours are free of charge; the minimum age to attend is 10 years old and children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Those taking the tour can see how high-tech recycling equipment allows Republic to quickly process materials so they can be sent to different markets around the country and overseas for remanufacturing into new products. Residents can always do more to help green initiatives be more effective in keeping trash out of landfills. “The best advice I can give to help Republic Services is to pay attention to the lists of accepted materials,” Herring said. “Many materials that you may believe are recyclable can actually cause issues at our sorting facilities. If you do not have a current list of recyclables, one can be picked up at City Hall (690 Chesterfield Parkway West).” “Chesterfield has one of the strongest levels of participation of all our cities, and we are very pleased with their participation and interest in recycling,” Herring said. 16

Low Maintenance Flower Garden ARTICLE MELINDA MYERS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
April 2016 | Chesterfield Lifestyle

BLOOMIN’ EASY (CON TI N U ED)
G
row a beautiful flower garden with minimal maintenance; by investing a bit of time at the start of the
season you can reduce on-going care. Always match flowers to the growing conditions and the care you are willing to provide. Low maintenance plants need minimal or no deadheading and staking. This means you’ll be growing good-looking plants with little effort on your part. If the plants are suited to the growing conditions and resistant to common pests, you’ll be doing less work managing insect and disease problems. Further reduce your workload by selecting self-cleaning or free flowering annuals and perennials and those bred for long bloom and compact growth. You’ll enjoy more colorful flowers with less pruning and grooming. Ageratum, angelonia, calibrochoa and many of the newer petunia cultivars are just a few of the annuals that do not need regular deadheading for continual bloom. Include perennials like: willow amsonia, bugbane, Solomon seal, turtlehead and sedum autumn joy for lower maintenance and big results. Prepare the soil and provide proper fertilization before planting. Work several inches of compost or other organic matter into the top 8 to 12 inches of soil to improve drainage and water holding ability. Incorporate a low nitrogen organic fertilizer like Milorganite (milorganite.com) at the same time. The slow release formulation provides needed nutrients throughout most, if not all of the season. Plus, it promotes slow, steady growth that won’t interfere with flowering, is less susceptible to pests and is more drought tolerant. Properly space the plants, making sure they have sufficient room to reach their full size. Overcrowding means you will be thinning or dividing plants more often or battling disease problems instead of enjoying the full beauty the plants provide. Consider removing flowers on annuals at planting. This allows plants to focus energy on establishing roots instead of flowers. Can’t bear to do this? Then remove the flowers on every other plant or every other row. Then a week or two later remove the flowers on the remaining plants. You will soon be rewarded with full compact plants that will produce more flowers throughout the season. Pinch back long and leggy transplants. Use a hard pinch to remove the tip and several inches of stem. Use your pruners or fingers to remove stems just above a set of leaves. The remaining plant will still look good while you wait for new leaves and stems to grow and produce new blooms. Encourage branching on single stemmed plants with a soft pinch. Remove just the uppermost portion of the stem where the leaves and tip are starting to develop. Soon you will have a well branched plant and more blossoms. CONTINUED >

athy Shaw-Connely’s workplace, Tom Shaw Realtors, is also part of her family. For 38 years, she’s been a home sales manager and a broker salesperson with the family-owned business, now based at 17813 Edison Ave. No.200 in Chesterfield. The business was started by her grandfather, Charles A. Shaw – the mayor of Clayton from 1930 to 1942 and namesake of that city’s Shaw Park – in 1922. “We provide help with relocation buyers and we focus on listing residential sales tailored to the client,” said Shaw-Connely. She’s proud that her grandfather was instrumental in starting up all subdivisions and developments in Clayton. “The company originally was called Francis Shaw Realtors and then Shaw Brichler and Coleman Realtors before becoming Tom Shaw Realtors, which was named after my dad when he took it over,” Shaw-Connely said. The firm now serves Chesterfield, Wildwood, St. Charles County and Franklin County. “My dad, too, was instrumental in many residential and commercial developments,” Shaw-Connely said. “We still do some large acreage work but we do a lot of individual home sales as well, which is our main focus. I had the best teachers in this
business – my dad is in his 80s and still 636.346.4960 comes into the office.” squawkyl@aol.com Her two brothShawRealtors.com ers, John Shaw and Tommy Shaw, work in the business, as well as her step mom Kathy Shaw, nephews Patrick Shaw and Matthew Shaw, and daughter Sheena Connely-Mulhal. The team also includes: Donna Wolfe, Kathy Loehr, Michelle Cabral, Michelle Oberlin, Ron Meier, T. D. Ward, Kevin and Lori Bardot, Randy Lewis, Sheryl McQuerry, Noel Mitchell, Michelle Scarato, Karla Dale, Randy Zimmering, Linda Mulhall, and many more talented people. “We’re all attached at the hip, with everybody helping one another – all our agents are family or like family,” Shaw-Connely said. Shaw-Connely and her team thrive in a real estate market that is extremely busy. “I have had 80 listings at a time sometimes,” she said. “But our practice is to take the “m” in “me” and turn it upside down to “we.” We make our work about customers and all the staff, because word of mouth and reputation are so important to our company. That’s why we have a lot of repeat customers and different members of families work with us - it comes from providing good service.” CATHY SHAW-CONNELY

John L. Shaw said that Tom Shaw Realtors is now in the process of finalizing an agreement with Kim Hibbs and Matt Belcher of Hibbs Homes, to build up to seven energy efficient homes, in western Wildwood, on lots ranging in size from 5.5 acres to 9 acres. Shaw-Connely said she enjoys helping people, especially if they’re first time buyers. “We specialize all over the board, from first to 20th time buyers in all prices ranges and with all different types of people,” she said. “Repeat business is our best feedback and we believe in the personal touch. While we focus on residential clients, we serve everyone builders, farmers--a wide variety of clients,” said Shaw-Connely. April 2016 | Chesterfield Lifestyle

Can Your Own Stem Cells Cure Your Joint Pain? EXPLORING POSSIBLE REGENERATIVE PROPERTIES OF ADULT STEM CELLS ARTICLE DREW BLACKMAN, MD, ST. LUKE'S HOSPITAL PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

ust like in many other aspects of life, people are always searching for the “latest and greatest” ways to treat their orthopedic problems. One of the newest treatment options available is stem cell therapy. Stem cell therapy has been touted to relieve pain related to: arthritis, rotator cuff tears, tennis elbow, herniated discs and dozens of other orthopedic conditions. Advertisements on TV and the internet suggest that you could avoid painful surgeries and prolonged rehabilitation if you have treatments with stem cells. As a result, numerous patients come
into my office asking if stem cell therapy may be right for them. Stem cells that are used for orthopedic problems are adult stem cells – not the stem cells that are harvested from embryos and grown in the lab-- which have been the topic of numerous political disagreements over that past few decades. These adult stem cells are typically harvested from a patient’s own bone marrow or fat tissue through minimally invasive techniques. The stem cells are then isolated and injected into the site of the damaged tissue – like an arthritic knee, for example. The stem cells are “multi-potent,”meaning that they can differentiate into many different types of tissue, including: cartilage, tendon, muscle and bone--depending on the environment that they are in. Theoretically, stem cells injected into a torn muscle could turn into new muscle cells and improve healing time. Stem cells injected into an arthritic joint could turn into new cartilage cells and CONTINUED > decrease pain.

There have been many success stories of stem cells in recent years; certainly, this treatment approach is very exciting and potentially groundbreaking. However, most healthcare professionals are not quite ready to go all in on stem cell therapies for several reasons. First and foremost, there is just not that much good scientific evidence to support using stem cells for most conditions. There are a handful of studies that show that stem cell injections are better than other types of injections for some conditions – patellar tendinitis and plantar fasciitis – but, overall, the quantity, quality and consistency of the scientific evidence is low. As a result of this, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet approved any stem cell therapy, aside from bone marrow transplant for the treatment of certain blood cancers. Companies that market stem cell therapies have argued that stem cells are not a “drug,” so their use should not be regulated by the FDA. The FDA has cautioned that the complexity of stem cell therapies creates a major challenge in ensuring safety and effectiveness, so these treatments should be regulated by their administration. Fortunately, there are ongoing FDA trials studying stem cells in the treatment of knee arthritis and hundreds of other studies are currently examining the use of stem

cells for other orthopedic conditions; there should be more clarity regarding these treatments over the next five to 10 years. In the meantime, health insurance providers almost universally deny coverage for stem cell treatments on the grounds of these treatments being “experimental” or “investigational.” So, patients typically are required to pay out of pocket to receive these treatments. Single injections can cost over $2,000 and full treatment courses from stem cell therapy companies can cost over $20,000. To sum it all up, stem cell therapy for orthopedic conditions is still very much in its early stages of development. The next few years will be very exciting as we find out more about the applications and effectiveness of these regenerative treatments. For now, stem cell therapy may not be ready for “prime time” but it is certainly an option to consider, especially if standard treatment options do not solve your orthopedic problem(s). If you are curious about how stem cell treatments may be able to help you, ask your orthopedic doctor for an educated opinion. For more information about stem cell therapy for your orthopedic condition or other treatment options, contact Dr. Blackman at the Bone and Joint Specialists of Chesterfield at 314.523.2595 or visit: StLukes-STL.com/BoneandJoint.

GARDENING SUCCESS IS A FLUID SITUATION HABORING HOSTAS AND BECOMING ELMER FUDD WORDS DENISE SNODELL
A
ll along, I considered hostas the lazy gardener’s hero. These attractive, leafy plants thrive in the shade where many other pretty things will not. They sprout flowers now and then; best of all, they come back every year. Plant once, kick back forever, I thought. I was so buzzed by the idea this elegant ground cover would reappear every spring. I would look like a pro; all I had to do was throw in a little fertilizer and toss enough water its way-- only if it didn’t rain enough. Each spring, as the shade took over my back and side yards, I planted even more hostas. I discovered varieties with pretty patterns, and some solid ones with blueish or chartreuse tints. Some boasted interesting textures. Nature’s corduroy! (a description I assume master gardeners use.) No matter what type I selected, these beauties punctuated my yard with an air of paradise. Until… Wascally Wabbits. Last year, the deceptively cute furry creatures waged a war with me. They had stolen my easy hosta lifestyle. Imagine my shock the first time I approached my favorite original plant—the monster bloomer--only to see its massive outer leaves chomped to shreds. “Noooo, not my big blue floppy Dumbo ear!” (That’s the scientific horticultural term.) I dropped my hose and ran to the newer purchases on the side of the house, the ones I doggedly searched for in way too many nurseries. I had become picky about a certain crisp, creamy edged pattern on one particular variety--I just had to have it. (These are known in the botanical world as ‘The Cool Ones That Cost More.”) My newbie plants were chewed down to the stems, like they were masquerading as chives. I hurried back indoors, revved up 34

my search engine and found two recommended solutions: chicken wire or repellant spray. Chicken wire was out, for aesthetic reasons. Not to mention the effort. Imagine! But squirting a bottle of environmentally friendly stuff upon graceful leaves seemed simple enough. According to the directions, I just had to walk around, coat my hostas with a fine mist and laugh maniacally at the little hungry fur balls sharpening their teeth beneath the bushes. “Go try some dandelions, you picky little hipsters!” Despite this battle plan, there were a few problems. The main one being I was late to the boxing match. Nothing is more disheartening than dousing an invisible layer of protection on a half-destroyed garden. If only I had paid attention the previous week, before word got out on nature’s Yelp* reviews. However, the bigger glitch was me. Once I began spraying this “liquid chicken wire,” I was overcome. What was that… smell? I was hoping for something undetectable to humans, like a dog whistle, but for the nose. Or a scent similar to mosquito-repelling citronella, which is somewhat pleasant. But Eau de No Bunny? Even a Beatrix Potter plush toy would run away from its foul mist. Here’s the most delicate, “fancy magazine” way to describe my take on the scent: gentle pre-dawn wafts from the dampened streets of New Orleans’ French Quarter…the morning after Mardi Gras. That’s right: bottled hurl. So what’s this amateur gardener’s overall take on the liquid solution? It seemed to offer a total smack down on the problem. The stuff kept me out of the yard, so I didn’t even care if the hostas were there or not! Problem solved?
