There's No Place Like Home N
MAY 2016 publisher
Denise Sundvold | DSundvold@LifestylePubs.com
o matter where you roam, there's no place like home. This saying holds true for one naughty dog in our neighborhood. This particular puppy has a collar and belongs to our neighbor; any chance she gets she escapes and runs the streets. Whenever we see her out and about we holler, "Go HOME!"...and she does! Though the dog gets a wild hair to roam daily, she knows where her home is and can quickly find her way back there. To her, home is where she is fed, has shelter and is given love and attention. I am sure that is why she returns home day after day. We have nicknamed the dog "Toto" for this reason.
As humans, our definition of home isn't really that far removed from that of our neighborhood rogue dog if you think about it; after our long days journeys we long to return to our homes to feel that sense of safety, belonging and caring from each other--and of course to eat dinner. Whether you are thinking about updating, redecorating, downsizing or moving to your dream home, in Chesterfield, we've got you covered with expert ideas and advice to make your home the haven it should be. In our "Home" issue we explore some unique ways you can make your home and environment at home that very special place...like no other. So, we can take a tip from "Toto," no matter where we roam, there's no place like home. Yours in Community, Elizabeth "Libby" Mullen

Explore America Series: Destination # 3 The Silverado Trail
A journey along the Silverado Trail in California offers up RV owners an adventure of all that Napa Valley was and is, old and new, historical and state-of-the-art. First settled in 1831, Napa Valley enjoyed a population boom from 18481858 during The Gold Rush, and grew even more when the first permanent road was built from Napa to Calistoga in 1852, which was later called The Silverado Trail. By 1875, Napa Valley wines were considered the best in the State, creating a world-famous wine region. The Silverado Trail Wineries Association is a group of more than 40 wineries and businesses which run along the tranquil and scenic eastside of Napa Valley. A Bulgarian native who has excelled in the U.S. restaurant industry for more than 10 years, Nikolov most recently worked as general manager of Central Table in Balaban’s former Central West End neighborhood. He came to the U.S. in 1998 at the invitation of Hyatt Hotels for a job as hotel manager of their establishment in Union Station after stints at two recognized hotels in Dublin, Ireland, and after managing the five-star Hotel Novotel Europe in Sofia, Bulgaria. For seven years from 2000 to 2007, he managed day to day operations, oversaw much of banquet and catering and human resources functions at the St. Louis Country Club as assistant general manager. ncore Consignment Gallery, in Town & Country, specializes
in

things
with people who will love them, according to Barb Lampe, who is co-owner of the store with her cousin Maureen Strobeck. Strobeck said the store, which opened in June of 2013 at 287 Lamp and Lantern Village, is not the typical consignment environment because Encore displays gently-used home furniture and home decor items in an organized fashion that is elegantly presented, so customers can visualize how pieces might work in their home. Their 10,000-square-foot showroom displays upscale furnishings, with an inventory that is constantly changing and consisting of a wide variety of items ranging from French country to contemporary and modern pieces. “It’s quality furniture at value pricing, usually 30 to 80 percent of original value,” Strobeck said. Strobeck’s background is in retail, having been with J. C. Penney in management for 14 years and then with the May Company’s Famous Barr, Venture, and Payless stores all over the country. Lampe had been in the design field since 1987, having owned a Decorating Den store and worked for Ashley Furniture‘s O’Fallon store as presentation manager. “One thing I noticed in so many places were these fabulous consignment furniture stores that St. Louis didn’t have,” said Strobeck, who retired from being director of stores for Payless in 2009 and then, to learn the consignment business, became operating officer of Terri’s Consign and Design in Phoenix from 2009 to 2011. “In Phoenix alone, the consignment stores are from 10,000 to 30,000 square feet in size, and, within a five-mile radius of where I lived, there were 14 different stores. When I was moving back to St. Louis, I thought we needed something like that here, a place

Encore has a state-of-the-art consignment system to ensure care, tracking and control of furniture and home decor items. They offer a 48/52 split on all furniture items and a 40/60 split on accessories sold during the contract period and prepare checks on a monthly basis for in-store pickup. And they can coordinate disposal of any unsold items to local charities, if the owner doesn’t want to retrieve them. “We make things look like they’d look in a home, with things constantly moved around, to give people great ideas on decorating their home,” Strobeck said. “They see they can buy a quality piece of furniture at a great value to fill in a spot and change experience so people love to shop

“No need to worry about scratching or hot pots and pans with granite counter tops,” Aubuchon says. Marble is the most fashionable look for counter top selections and is usually a first choice for designers in new construction applications. Although marble can be found in many different colors, the white and gray calcium based species are typically the most desirable. “Carrera marble, Danby marbles and Calcutta marbles seem to be leading the industry in popularity when it comes to marble counter tops,” Aubuchon says. “Although the look is very desirable, marble does have a few downsides. Spring Cleaning... Your Family Tree Organizing and Archiving Family Histories at Home ARTICLE AIMEE PELLET | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
T
his past weekend, my husband and I turned to that age-old practice of Spring Cleaning--purging all of those needless items that we convince ourselves we need, but know in reality we don’t. Of course, we came across many family items that really needed organizing rather than purging. Many people ask me how to begin the seemingly insurmountable task of organizing their family history and mementos. Everyone has their own methods, tips and tricks; here are a few of mine. There is not one correct way to go about completing this process but it is important to enjoy the experience. This is your family’s past and it should be an interesting and fun journey. The best way to start is to gather everything in one place, if possible. Collect the boxes, the trunks, the old albums and the containers of photographs. Next, begin sorting everything-- one piece at a time. My preferred method is to sort by family branch, especially if your intention is to take the next step and begin to trace your family’s genealogical roots. So, for my family I start with a pile for the Kuhlmanns, another for the Pellets, another for the Hoefer branch, etc. I then place documents in a notebook and photographs, certificates, objects, etc. into archival boxes, again by family branch. If you run across a photograph of an unknown family member, start an “unknown” pile. You’ll probably also want an “overall family” pile for items that relate to the entire family, like the family tree my mom handwrote on a huge sheet of butcher paper many years ago. In this process it is important to use acid free materials. As you go through historic items, you’ll start to notice that glue, cellophane tape and acidic paper were the materials of the day. These supplies often caused damage over the years, leaving stains and discolored or brittle photographs. Once you have sorted your items, you can look online or at a photography store to find acid-free boxes and notebooks for storage. If you have really old items, you may even want to purchase a pair of cotton archival gloves, so the oils on your hands don’t leave a permanent impression. What about all of those rolled-up photos and certificates? I’m really not sure who thought that rolling an item was a good idea or in any way saved space, but most family collections have at least a few of these. Over time the paper has become brittle, so simply trying to open the roll won’t help and may cause further damage. The best thing to try is a process called rehumidifying, which involves allowing the document to sit in homemade humidifying chamber for several hours. Don’t worry, I’ve done it many times and it is easier than it sounds, but it is best to look up detailed instructions online by searching “rehumidify photos.” Many organizing gurus will begin by telling you to throw out every useless sweater in your closet. This type of project is a bit different. Despite my “clear the clutter” personality, I can’t tell you to purge sentimental family items because you never know when some little snippet written on a piece of paper will come in handy. However, I do suggest throwing away duplicate photographs, particularly those more recent ones. I say this following an afternoon of my mom and I simultaneously saying “look at this funny photo of our aunt,” while we each held the exact same photograph. Apparently “free duplicate copies” is a promotion that has been around nearly as long as the camera. Or better yet, if there is a family member who would like the rare, older studio shots of ancestors, offer the photographs to them—it may just spark their interest. 24
Chesterfield Lifestyle | May 2016
The next step, if you are so inclined, is to digitize your items. If you have a large quantity of items, take your time with this to avoid feeling overwhelmed. High resolution scanners are great and not overly expensive. If this doesn’t sound like something you can do on your own, ask a tech-savvy family member if they would be willing to help. It may even draw them into the fun and spawn some family storytelling. Remember, technology will continue to evolve so try to save digital archives in an easily transferable file format. I save my digital files in the same way I organize my boxes and notebooks—by family branch. Digitizing also offers a way to identify people in the photographs without writing directly on them—use the person’s name in the file name or put it in the notes. Remember to make a backup of your work occasionally. Once you have items digitized and stored appropriately, you can find a way to share or display them. I’m generally not a big fan of traditional albums that utilize every photograph. Instead, consider creating an album that uses a select group of photos that really tell a story. You can add quotations, receipts, documents or snippets from old postcards in more of a scrapbook style. If you are using original photographs, be sure to use photo corners, instead of tape or glue so you don’t ruin the original photograph. Or, once you have your photos and documents scanned, consider creating an online scrapbook through a website like Shutterfly.com or Picaboo.com that allows you to input your files and then have a printed scrapbook sent to you. If you intend you use this organization project to delve further into your genealogy, I suggest contacting other family members next to gather some of the material they might have. On a recent visit to St. Louis, I descended on my Aunt Emily and Uncle Roy’s house, replete with my laptop and portable scanner. Conversations led to forgotten memories and items I had never seen before. Not only was I able to find new information about my dad’s side of the family, but it was a wonderful opportunity to touch base and enjoy a lunch with family. In this process, don’t forget to scan some photos and information about yourself--someone down the line may want to know a thing or two about you! Both the good news and the bad seems to be that there is usually more information to be discovered. Just as I thought we had uncovered nearly all of our family’s documents, I sit surrounded by two large boxes of “new” information: Stay tuned for Part 2 in a future issue, where we’ll get you deeds, certificates, letters and postcards. The work of the family historian is never started on beginning or continuing your genealogy using these documents and other resources in the St. Louis area. done, but it is a job worth doing.

SKIN CANCER RISK HITS HOME MAKE SKIN PROTECTION A PRIORITY ARTICLE LAWRENCE SAMUELS, MD PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
A
s summer draws near and you will likely find yourself spending more time outdoors, it’s an important time to adopt healthy sun
protection habits. With the climbing rates of skin cancer in the nation, taking preventive measures to protect your skin and detecting any changes may save your life. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, an estimated one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Almost 150,000 new cases of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, are estimated to be diagnosed in the U.S. this year. The good news is you can take simple steps to prevent skin cancer. • Wear Sunscreen – UV radiation is the most preventable risk factor for all types of skin cancer. Regardless of your skin type, the ideal sunscreen must be broad spectrum which contains agents that provides protection from both UVB and UVA radiation. An SPF of at least 15 should be used year-round. When you expect to have exposure to sun or UV light, sunscreens should be water-resistant so they cannot be easily removed by sweating or swimming; have an SPF of 30 or higher; and be reapplied every two hours for continued protection. Keep in mind that sand and snow reflect the sun’s damaging rays, which can increase your chance of sunburn. • Seek Shade And Cover Up – The sun’s rays are the strongest between 10am and 4pm. Find the shade, and wear protective clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, pants, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses. • Avoid Tanning Beds – Exposure to tanning beds increases the risk of melanoma, especially in women 45 and younger.

anomas are asymmetrical, where one half of the mole does not match the other half. • B – BORDER IRREGULARITY:
Look for moles with irregular, ragged, notched or blurred borders. • C – COLOR VARIATION: Although melanomas are
usually dark brown or black, they may sometimes have a range of colors including tan, brown, blue, pink or white. • D – DIAMETER: Eventually, melanomas become larger
than ordinary moles. Any pigmented spot larger than six millimeters in diameter (the size of a regular pencil eraser) should be examined and followed carefully. • E – EVOLUTION: Some early melanomas begin
to increase in size, elevation, color or sensation. A lesion that begins to change in this fashion should be checked immediately.

he Scarecrow is truly a restaurant find-located right in the hustle and bustle along Hwy 64/40 on Chesterfield Parkway. Who knew? With an elaborate and extensive whiskey menu, thorough and all-encompassing wine list and craft beers as well as domestics, this place can provide the libations and ambiance for a perfect meet-up spot. We chose to meet with a group of friends for a mid-week dinner and conversation and found the Scarecrow to be everything we had hoped..and more. As we had a group of seven with many diverse tastes, appetites and time schedules (sounds like many Chesterfield families), we anticipated the menu at the Scarecrow would be accommodating, varied and delicious. Owner Shawn Mulholland has designed this restaurant for just this purpose, “we have worked hard the past three and a half years to build an atmosphere in which patrons will feel like they are going to hang out at a friend’s house.” The pace is what you make it, service is prompt, courteous and definitely not hurried. Shawn and his staff take great pride in providing varied seating arrangements for the family meal, the business closing and especially an intimate evening for two. We started off with a few appetizers for our group, while our friends on a tight time schedule enjoyed the burger and the Hot Pastrami on Pretzel Roll. An important find, was that Chef Travis Klott is making the corned beef and house smoked pastrami from scratch, and the steaks are hand cut so they are as fresh as possible. Our appetizers consisted of the Cheese and Sausage Board and the signature appetizer items the Fried Pickles and the Scotch Eggs. The Cheese and Sausage Board provides a varied and essential combination of cheeses and meats. You will absolutely love the tender pork loin and the paprika cheddar cheese in this grouping. We all enjoyed the Fried Pickles with accompanying ranch dressing, and the Scotch Eggs; a quick comment on the Scotch Eggs, this is a crispy sausage wrapped hard boiled egg. A quite unique menu offering in St. Louis, and this is one delicious appetizer and a real treat for the foodie in you and the "gastropub" fan.
Our entrees consisted of Pan Seared Salmon, Grilled Walleye, Beef Tenderloin with a Peppercorn Sauce and Grilled Scallops, Wild Mushroom Risotto, and Herb Roasted Chicken. The staff did an outstanding job of preparing all of these offerings and the side items were varied from Grilled Asparagus, Flash Fried Spinach, to a Twice Baked Potato with Bleu Cheese and Bacon. The Wild Mushroom Risotto was very earthy and creamy and a real delight on the cool, rainy evening. We are impressed with the care and thought that Shawn and his staff have taken in the wine offerings and the ability to pair them, masterfully, with the varied menu items. We finished off our delicious meal with a couple of the dessert items and spoons for everyone. The Toffee Sundae with Candied Walnuts is truly decadent, and meant to be shared. We also passed along the delicious Heated Fudge Brownie topped with vanilla ice cream. This put the finishing touch on an outstanding evening of food, drink and conversation. Scarecrow is continuing to evolve, with the addition of new daily lunch specials and new outside seating and television viewing for the beautiful summer months ahead. With over 325 various whiskeys, 28 beer taps and over 75 wine selections, patrons of Scarecrow can make this a wonderful meeting place. We are fortunate to have many dining options in Chesterfield and evening entertainment to meet our diverse tastes and needs. Here is to hoping you will find the Scarecrow; it is located down the street from STAGES and Delmar Gardens Corporate Office, right in the midst of our beautiful city. SCARECROW

Home Again...
Unplugged A TISKET, A TASKET YOUR FAMILY NEEDS A BASKET. WORDS CAROLYN COMPORATO
T
hink about the various meanings the word home has to each of us: family…a feeling we get when we feel at peace...calmness... belonging. These days, it seems people are working more hours than they ever have and their children are involved in a great number of extracurricular activities. Evenings now consist of parents rushing their children from one activity to the next. I have heard some parents joke around that their “family time” now consists of each person plugging into their own electronic bliss while sitting in the same room together. Technology has its purpose. It allows us to communicate with family members--virtually anywhere on the planet-- whom we would not normally get to talk to or “see.” It helps us navigate while driving our cars; there is no longer the need to ask someone for directions to their house. It has helped many business owners grow their businesses and allows writers to create captivating content for blogs and publications. OK. Agreed. Technology does have its place. But…what value are we placing on technology? Has it risen too high on our priority lists? Is technology more important than quality “person to person” time with friends and loved ones? Does the word “home” have to represent only the dwelling in which you live? We have a choice how we use the word home and how we can create a better place called home for our families; home is not just where you
live, but a feeling you get when you feel safe, at peace, connected with the people with whom you share it and relaxed. Let’s bring “HOME” back again. But, how? The best way is by having true quality time with loves ones; talking together, face to face and looking into the eyes of those with whom you are conversing. Technology is so tempting...it is right in our hands! Quickly! Find or purchase a basket or another suitable container of your choice; have each person place their "devices of the present moment" in the basket during designated or spontaneous times. This would allow everyone to truly be present and reconnect with their parents/children or loved ones instead of constantly being distracted and emotionally unavailable. This might be a huge challenge for many but with all the “commitments” we choose to place on ourselves and our children’s full calendars, we must take action to forge out some time to spend actually talking to one another. Take this spring to step back and think about what the word “home” truly means to you; reconnect with it as summer shortly approaches. Dig out that old basket…it will give your family and friends a wonderful gift…for all to be truly present...together...at HOME.
Where Summer Family Memories Are Made.
