Summer FUN! T
AUGUST 2016
his summer has been flying by! It seems like the summers lasted a lot longer when we were kids; doesn't it? We really spent entire days outside, either at the pool or at the creek. We maximized the daylight hours and literally wore ourselves out eating snow cones and just having fun. Maybe the way to make the summer last longer is to incorporate more fun and meaning into each day where we can. When I think about fun, parties come to mind. So let's start by having a party...there's always something that can be celebrated, right? Let's commemorate that party with unique and fun professional "selfies" from A2Z Selfie Company (page 16).
Our party is also going to include some dancing; yep, that's right. To prepare for this shindig, we better get in shape and learn some new moves. Jazzercise is the perfect locally owned business to help (page 28). While we have our family and friends in attendance, that is a great time to share memories. These stories can help us climb the branches of our family trees. When the party is over and the dancing dust settles--we will have awesome pictures to boot--perhaps we can work on our family tree as a summer project (page 18). So, there you go; here are some great ideas to make this summer last and make it more memorable and meaningful. Let's all raise our snow cones and toast (see what I did there?) to SUMMER FUN!

Healthy Lifestyle
Are you Hitting Snooze on
Back-to-school sleep health?
SLEEP RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CHILDREN ARTICLE SHALINI PARUTHI, MD | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
W
ith the start of August, school is just around the corner. With a little planning, prioritization of sleep, and attention to bedtime routines, the transition back to school can be easier and less stressful for the entire family this year. First, it’s important to realize the vital role sleep plays in overall health. Sleep is an essential element for a healthy life, and that healthy habit is best established early in childhood. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than a third of the U.S. population is not getting enough sleep. For children who are in the critical years of early development, sleep is even more crucial. For the first time, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) has provided official pediatric sleep duration recommendations. These recommendations provide the optimal sleep duration children should get on a regular basis to promote optimal health. The panel of sleep experts found that children who sleep the recommended hours saw improvement in: attention span, behavior, learning, memory, emotional regulation, quality of life, as well as mental and physical health. Improved performance at school and better relationships at home are also benefits of good sleep health. Not sleeping within the recommended durations was associated with negative outcomes, such as increased risk-taking
14

behaviors, increased drug use and increased risk of suicide and suicide attempts, particularly in teenagers. PEDIATRIC SLEEP RECOMMENDATIONS
• Infants 4 to 12 months should sleep 12 to 16 hours per 24 hours (including naps) • Children 1 to 2 years of age should sleep 11 to 14 hours per
24 hours (including naps) • Children 3 to 5 years of age should sleep 10 to 13 hours per 24 hours (including naps) • Children 6 to 12 years of age should sleep 9 to 12 hours per 24 hours • Teenagers 13 to 18 years of age should sleep 8 to 10 hours per 24 hours
WHAT CAN FAMILIES DO?
For families looking to improve their sleep health, setting good habits in motion one to two weeks before the first day of school can help everyone make the transition to the school year smoothly. For children, bedtime routines should be approximately 10-15 minutes long, with the same activities done in the same order every night. It is recommended that all children have a set bedtime routine to help the brain wind down and transition to sleep. The routine should be individualized for each child. Additionally,
children need set bedtimes and perhaps, even more importantly, set wake-up times every day of the week, including weekends. It is important for the parent to set the non-negotiable routine and stick with it each evening. For adults, making the bedroom and evening routine conducive for sleep is also important. In the bedroom, reducing external noises and distractions, limiting light, setting a cooler temperature (6572°F) and keeping the clock out of sight (to avoid clock watching) can all be helpful. It is recommended to avoid caffeine, nicotine and heavy meals before bed. Regular exercise is important and can improve sleep. The AASM recommend that adults get at least seven hours of sleep, preferably more, on a regular basis for optimal health. Many people use electronics up until the time they go to sleep. Based on recent research, the blue wavelength of light from any screen can delay the production of melatonin (the chemical our brain naturally makes to help us feel sleepy). Ideally, it is recommended to turn off all screens one hour before bedtime. However, for those who must use a device with a screen late into the evening, blue light blocking glasses can be purchased and worn for the last hour before bedtime. Additionally, blue light blocking apps can be downloaded to screens for the last one hour before bedtime. If you are concerned that you or your child is sleeping too little or too much, we encourage you to discuss this with your primary care doctor or seek out an evaluation and treatment plan from a board certified sleep specialist. Common, treatable sleep disorders include snoring, sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy. Furthermore, treatments are available for nightmares, night terrors, sleepwalking and growing pains in children. The Sleep Medicine and Research Center at St. Luke’s Hospital provides comprehensive services related to the diagnosis and treatment of all 75 sleep disorders and offers a team of experts committed to treating sleep problems in patients of all ages, from newborns to adults. mber Smith, owner of A2Z Selfie Co. in Chesterfield, admits that the company’s name was "kid-inspired." Daughter Acacia, 13, and son Zed, 11, helped her pick it out. “At the kids’ school, I was always known as “A to Z mommy” because of their names, so it melded into the new company, and it made sense because our selfies are good for so many types of events,” said Smith, who lives in Chesterfield and operates the business at 16105 Swingley Ridge Road. The business isn’t quite a year old, having started in October of 2015. “While I’m also a writer and an artist, those things are sporadic – then I heard of an ad for this sort of equipment in California, saw it used at a (sporting) event, and thought it would be fun to create an independent company,” Smith said. “So I took out a loan and started it up.” Her company serves the St. Louis, Springfield and CAPTURE MEMORIES AT YOUR PARTIES AND EVENTS Kansas City areas in Missouri with locally owned ARTICLE MARY SHAPIRO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED mobile photo stations. Her equipment has a photo station, with a 32-inch monitor computer screen on the machine which looks like a giant iPhone or iPod – almost six feet tall - with a DSL camera attached on top to ensure product quality. She brings a printer as well, along with a table filled with props for the photos, so people can get creative. “People can have selfie photos taken on site with our state-ofthe-art, open air, ‘boothless’ photo system, print them there or email, text, or post them to social media like Facebook or Twitter,” Smith said. “You can have as many people as you want in the photo, and we also have green screen capabilities – people can also use a cool wall they’ve decorated. After photos are taken, we have up to six different filters people can choose from.” The firm offers black or white backdrops and will soon include a silver one, she said. “If you’re doing a selfie for, say, a graduation or marriage, you can make a border specific to the event beforehand and make a gift for the guests with their names on it,” Smith said. “People can choose among many types of photos, filters and borders/messages, and they can even make short videos.”

Residential Home Sales Specialist The process is a hit at parties, weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, corporate events, school dances, graduations, reunions and more, because so many people can get in one photo, such as a family or big group of friends, she said. Her children have helped out occasionally. “Zed has gone to some events as a helper and sales person, and Acacia helps load and unload and set up equipment,” Smith said. Her family also includes husband Ed and adult step-sons Cameron and David – all supportive though not directly involved with the business. “My brother and sister-in-law do some events for me as well if I’m double booked, and I have a couple of other employees, too.” Her firm has recently worked at some graduation and birthday parties in West County, as well as private school events such as for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, prom, end of year picnics and eighth grade graduation, Smith said. “We recently did a graduation party and everyone said we made their party special,” Smith said. She’s trying for more expansion in the Springfield area where her brother lives, as well as further into Kansas City. “I’ve always loved photography,” Smith said. “This is a creative thing and helps people have fun – they can let their guard down and get silly and make good memories. Photos are the way people remember their favorite events.”

o after May’s article, do you have your historical family documents organized? Whew! What a relief! Now what is the next step to putting together your family tree? I find the best place to begin is by capturing the information you already know, beginning with yourself and working backwards. Perhaps you know some branches of your family back several generations or perhaps you really only know yourself and your parents. Putting those first names and dates together is a start. Of course, you can do this on paper. My mom’s first version of our family tree was done on a long strip of butcher paper. That method is certainly economical and can help create a visual focus for your tree. Modern technology can really be your friend with this project. Websites like Ancestry. com have databases of millions of records to access. Ancestry.com allows you to create an account for free and manually enter and save all of the information you already have about yourself and your relatives. It also allows you, for free, to search through all of their databases. However, if you want to view any of the documents resulting from your searches, you will need a paid membership--with the exception of a small handful of 18

databases such as the 1940 Federal Census that are offered for free. Added benefits of a paid membership include access to census records, marriage and divorces, immigration records such as naturalization papers and ship manifests, both American and worldwide. Message boards and the trees of other members are also available. Who knows--perhaps a distant cousin has already done some of the work for you! Another great site is FamilySearch.org, which is the direct site to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The Mormon church has made it one of their missions to help people discover their ancestry. More and more of their reels of microfilm and pieces of microfiche are being added to their online website. However, if you find a reel of microfilm that has not been added online yet, but which you believe has information for your tree, you can have it sent to an approved location in St. Louis for a nominal fee. There are also many other sites like Familylink.com and GenWeb.com so take time to poke around and find the one that is right for you. Or more likely, you might use them all at some point! Other websites have more specific information. Fold3.com focuses on military records and Newspapers.com maintains scanned and indexed images from many of newspapers around the country, including several from St. Louis. Be sure to do a quick search on this site to make sure there are enough newspapers in the geographic area of your research before paying for a full subscription. All of the above resources are only the tip of the iceberg and are a great place to begin
on a national scale. However, if your family is from Missouri, you are lucky to have bountiful resources at your disposal. The first local site to check out is Missouri Digital Archives (SOS. mo.gov/mdh/). While they have numerous interesting collections to explore such as plat maps and some newspapers, their most pertinent documents for genealogy are the birth and death records. Death certificates in particular can be one of the most helpful documents available in your search, as they often provide birth and death dates, as well as locations and sometimes the names and birth locations of the deceased’s parents, which can help you jump back one more generation. Not all research can be done online. Many a researcher has been led down the wrong path by assuming that the “John Smith” they see online must be “their” John Smith
because he is the only one listed. However, there are massive amounts of records that are not yet online or are not indexed, requiring you to manually search a collection. It is vital to verify information instead of guessing. In my opinion, the best place to begin is the St. Louis County Genealogy department at the Main branch located on Lindbergh Blvd. Particularly if your ancestors are from the St. Louis area, the resources are amazing. But even if some of your ancestors hail from other parts of the country or the world, they have great sources and wonderfully educated and experienced staff to help. I consider myself a fairly good researcher and yet every time I visit this department, they always help me locate some important tidbit I would have never found on my own. They also have a remarkable collection of resources for African American
Genealogy resource, a niche that often has tricky aspects. Once you’ve visited the County library, be sure to check out the Missouri Historical Society, St. Louis Recorder of Deeds and the main branch of the St. Louis Public Library – all of which also have enormous amounts of information and records, as well as helpful staff to make the search easier. Another resource is local genealogy groups, many that meet according to geographical point of origin. The St. Louis Genealogical Society is a great place to begin looking for these types of groups. In addition to their own holdings of many church records, they also hold a speaker’s series on specific topics. (STLGS.org) If you know the exact location of your ancestors in the St. Louis metropolitan area, you might consider a visit to that locale’s historical society or genealogy department. I recently found an ancestor who lived in St. Charles County, so I paid a visit to the St. Charles County Historical Society, where knowledgeable volunteers assisted me in locating original property records; organizations like this exist throughout the metropolitan area. A more unique expedition is to explore local cemeteries, which can provide birth and death dates and often family relations. You can even purchase materials to do rubbings of the headstones. If trouncing through a cemetery isn’t quite your thing, there is even an online database for cemeteries: Findagrave. com. This site is also great for locating local cemeteries if you are interested in visiting. At some point, you may even contemplate a trip to Salt Lake City, the motherland of genealogical information. In addition to having nearly all of the rolls of microfilm at your disposal (although you may need to request some of the more obscure ones before your visit) they also have numerous certified genealogists there to answer questions, as well as language specialists who can help decipher, seemingly with ease, even the most illegible handwriting. Summertime is a perfect time to start a family genealogy project. These tips and resources should get you started on the journey of finding your ancestors. But take heed—it can become an addicting endeavor. August 2016 | Chesterfield Lifestyle

Chesterfield Lifestyle | August 2016
I had the privilege of experiencing a personal and hospitable tour from the owners of this fantastical home. The custom log home is located in the gated Raintree development and is on a private lake. Every last detail of this unique home was meticulously chosen and artfully executed. The exterior of the home is built from 6”x6” pine logs that were hand shaved, milled and notched. The logs were even derived from Missouri; it’s better to use logs from the region for acclimation purposes. Walking up to the home you have the feeling that you are going back in time to when everything was built to last. The home also gives a lodge-like vibe. You can live like you are on vacation—every day! “We like rustic,” said the Homeowners. The man of the house is an avid craftsman and talented wood carver. The front door and mantels of both stone fireplaces are masterfully hand-carved. They are breathtakingly beautiful and each is one of a kind. The staircase spindles and rails in the lofted area are solid logs and add to the rustic mystique of the home. The lighting fixtures are also hand-crafted from items like a wagon wheel and a livestock yoke.

im Truka’s Chesterfield Jazzercise Fitness Center, based at 13399 Olive Blvd.in Woodchase Plaza, is new to that site but has long been a fixture in the community. Truka, who lives in Chesterfield and also owns the Shrewsbury Jazzercise Center in the Shrewsbury City Center, opened at the Woodchase location in March of 2015. “But, for more than 25 years, Jazzercise classes were held at Ivy Chapel United Church of Christ on North Woods Mill Road about a mile away,” Truka said. “While I became certified as a Jazzercise instructor in 1993, I didn’t own those classes in Chesterfield until 2001, after I moved here. The former owner found I was coming and asked if I’d be interested in purchasing those classes. It was a great opportunity.” She originally became a Jazzercise student/customer in the mid-1980s when she lived in Nebraska and was looking for a workout that was fun and effective. “I enjoyed dancing but it’s more instructional and doesn’t offer as good exercise as
Jazzercise does,” Truka said. “Jazzercise still has the reputation of being an old-fashioned workout, since dance aerobics started to gain popularity in the 1980s. We were kind of stuck with the stigma of being an 80s workout. But, since I’ve become an instructor, I’ve seen an upward climb, and we’re now on the cutting edge of the fitness industry.” While dance aerobics is part of the package, she called Jazzercise a dance fitness program incorporating a lot of strength training, pilates style, and yoga. “Our most popular class is “dance mix” with a basic structure of Jazzercise incorporating a warm-up, cardiovascular training of dance aerobics and having a second part of the class being choreographed strength training movements set to music, but we incorporate weight and resistance training as well as well as pilates style exercises,” Truka said. Fifty-two classes a week, taught by more than 15 instructors, are offered, with many classes added within the last five years as a part of rebranding.
“We have classes devoted to strength training, kick boxing, and high intensity interval training incorporated into some classes - fusion describes classes that incorporate strength training into dancing, to allow the efficiency of the workout to better benefit the customer,” Truka said. In Chesterfield, hour-long classes are offered starting at 5:30 a.m., with the last class at 6:45 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. The last class on Fridays starts at 4:30 p.m. Five classes are offered on Saturdays, from 7:25 a.m. through 1 p.m., and four classes are on Sundays, starting at 8:30 a.m. “We’ve grown by leaps and bounds since we moved into our own center in Chesterfield and can offer more of a variety of classes,” Truka said. “While we loved being in Ivy Chapel and the trustees and staff were accommodating and wonderful, it wasn’t conducive to what the fitness industry is looking at now, to provide more classes to more customers. Also, at the Woodchase facility, we have a nice wooden dance floor, rather than a concrete floor with tile.” Staff also includes ten class managers and the Woodchase facility offers childcare/babysitting. “We’re blessed to have an awesome team,” Truka said. She’s hoping to incorporate into her schedule, likely starting this fall, a Junior Jazzercise for kids ages five through 11. “Currently, if a child comes to a regular class and is under 16, a parent or guardian must be with them - adult classes are not appropriate for those under age 12,” Truka said. Her company reaches out to the community including schools. “We have a ‘Kids Get Fit’ program for assemblies or for a part of a fitness emporium when schools offer activities, because kids love to move to music - we make it appropriate for various ages on music and the kind of movements and we have worked with some Parkway District schools,” Truka said. She enjoys all the people she’s met through Jazzercise. “I’m passionate about activity so it’s easy to help others meet their goals,” Truka said. “The friendships and community we’ve created at Jazzercise are special. We hold each other up. We joke about this being a good addiction. It’s excellent for people moving into an area, because they meet lots of people right away and are welcomed into the community through exercise.” Summertime is a great time to start dancing your way into better shape! A “Snowie” Summer FIRST JOB: WORKIN' THE SNOW CONE STAND WORDS LIBBY MULLEN
O
ne of my teenagers, Lucas, is working his first official job this summer. His girlfriend’s parents are entrepreneurs and own several businesses; this year they bought a “Snowie” snow cone Kiosk. After training Lucas in the art of Snowie making, they determined that he was the most skillful at the endeavor and promptly put him to work. The Snowie Stand is located at the Premium Outlet Mall in Chesterfield. Lucas has spent many of his summer days and most weekends there, serving up Snowies to the mall’s shoppers. Not only has Lucas really enjoyed making his own money (I have enjoyed that too—he hasn’t asked me for a cent this summer!), he truly has enjoyed meeting new people and providing excellent customer service. Not a bad gig, really, for summer! The location of the Snowie stand is primo; due to the outdoor mall setting, Lucas was able to watch the airshow overhead all weekend while he was working! When mall patrons are hot from shopping store to store on a summer day, they are very happy to visit Lucas at the Snowie stand. When they see that the Snowie servings are very large cups rather than the traditional, smaller paper cones their eyes literally light up! Lucas has learned a lot about running a business, this summer, too--tracking trends in flavor preferences for ordering,
minimizing waste and gaining repeat customers. All of these lessons will serve him well throughout his choice of career. Be sure to visit the Premium Outlet Mall; you may observe many people (primarily children) walking around with bright blue lips and tongues. Don’t be alarmed; they had a Blue Raspberry Snowie—it’s all the rage! If you would like to enjoy the cooling refreshment of a Snowie, sans the blue mouth, visit Lucas and order one of the other vibrant flavors: Root beer, Banana, Cherry, Watermelon, Grape, Banana and yes, even Cotton Candy!
