It's Better to Give... W

SEPTEMBER 2016

e have all heard the saying, "It is better to give than to receive;" most people probably don't realize the origin of the statement. It is biblical--Acts 20:35, "I have shewed you all things, how that so laboring ye ought to support the weak and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, it is more blessed to give than to receive." In addition to being of biblical origin, there is also scientific evidence that supports the concept that giving is more beneficial to people than receiving. Some scientists have proven, through biofeedback measurements, that giving to or helping others helps to relieve stress in the body and is actually beneficial to your overall health.

From your own personal experience, you probably know how good it feels to do a good deed for someone. Helping others allows you to capture that great feeling by putting others first. You might experience that feeling by volunteering your services for a worthy cause. Another popular way to give is to randomly help others by paying it forward--like paying for the next family's drive-thru order along with your own. There are many ways to give; giving monetary donations, time and talents are just a few of them. When is the last time you gave of yourself without expecting anything in return? Was it a good deed, a random act of kindness or a donation to a charitable organization? A plethora of organizations and foundations are out there for the choosing and they need volunteers. Pick one. Contact them. Donate. Volunteer.

ON THE COVER Psychology research tells us that all children are born with an egocentric view of the world. For the most part, environment supports this by the necessity of meeting all of the child’s needs from the moment they are born. As babies become vocal as toddlers, we often hear the shrieks, “MINE! MINE!” Giving is a learned response and must be taught. It is suggested that each household have a money jar that is labelled, “GIVING” and that parents by Community ™

involve children in placing change and a portion of any allowance or gift money in the jar for the purpose of donating. As children grow older they can also be involved in the decision process of where the “GIVING” funds are donated. This practice awakens children to the concepts of giving and sharing and they are more likely to be generous as adults if this foundation is laid. 4

Circle of Concern Serving West County Residents and Families in Need ARTICLE MARY SHAPIRO PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

A

s Circle of Concern approaches its 50th anniversary next year, the agency – mostly staffed by volunteers - continues a long tra-

dition of serving the needy living in the Parkway, Rockwood and Valley Park school districts with food pantry, financial and other services. Based at 112 St Louis Ave in Valley Park, the agency has, in addition to four full-time staff members, about 300 volunteers, about 200 of whom are very active, said Cyndi Miller, Circle’s executive director. “Volunteers meet with clients, answer the phones, stock the pantry and warehouse, troubleshoot technology, mentor job-hunting clients, work regular shifts and participate in occasional projects – we couldn’t do what we do without them,” Miller said. Circle is funded primarily by individual donations though they receive some corporate and family foundation grants, hold some special event fundraisers, and have support from area churches. “We are first and foremost a food pantry, sharing fresh and non-perishable food,” Miller said. “We want to help people with their most urgent needs but also work hard to help them get beyond their current circumstances.” While many don’t realize it, there is poverty in West County, Miller said. “We had a mom knock on our door the other day, in tears after her electricity had been off for three days – she said she was pregnant and just couldn’t do it anymore,” Miller said. “It’s satisfying to be able to help out someone like her.” Circle Of Concern was officially formed in 1967, when west St. Louis County was largely rural.

(including wages, social security, government assistance and other resources) up to 150 percent of the federal poverty level. “Each month, Circle feeds about 2,000 people. We share a 7 to 10 day supply of grocery items, including milk, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables, bakery items, frozen meats and canned goods. Because items like soap and toilet paper cannot be purchased with food stamps, personal care items and paper products also are included with the groceries.” Circle of Concern also provides emergency financial assistance on a limited basis,

JUVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION (CON TI N U ED)

At present, there is no cure. With the disease, a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone the body needs to get energy from food. Those with it must constantly monitor their blood-sugar level, inject or infuse insulin through a pump and carefully balance these insulin doses with their eating and activity--day and night. Even with the most vigilant disease management, fluctuations - with either high or low blood-sugar levels - place people with T1D at risk for potentially life-threatening hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic episodes as well as long-term complications such as kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, blindness and amputation of limbs. However, thanks to better therapies - which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available— people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure, Bartholomew said. JDRF has invested nearly $2 billion in research funding since its inception and has more than 100 U.S. locations and six international affiliates. “The focus is to find a cure for T1D but it’s been a hard disease to cure so we also work to keep people healthy,” Bartholomew said. “We spend some research dollars on finding better treatments and to find ways to prevent it from happening.” Andrawos said his son was diagnosed the day after he originally came to the St. Louis area. He’s been involved in the organization for two years and two months. In July of 2014, he became a board member of the JDRF local chapter. “I saw an opportunity to get Jay Wolfe Toyota involved on the sponsorship level after I was approached by the previous local chapter director, sponsored an event at the dealership, met everyone and liked the people involved,” said Andrawos, adding an employee of his also has T1D. “I wanted to be involved due to the cause of helping people – I wanted the dealership to be part of that education. The more I knew, the more I wanted to help. I’ve met several other families who’ve had members diagnosed with T1D.” At the dealership, each person who mentions personal involvement with JDRF,when they buy a car, prompts Andrawos to donate $250 to the JDRF – or $300 if the person is a board member of JDRF. “This organization does a great deal of good for the community,” he said. “Any time I’m involved with other dealerships, I talk to people about my involvement and try to get people to commit to helping out.” For next year, he plans to continue his involvement, likely with the gala and with the chapter’s walk in St. Louis and assisting with the St. Charles walk, starting in 2017. Humane Society Of Missouri’s

T

he Humane Society of Missouri’s Kuehner Center, in Chesterfield, offers pet adoptions, a veterinary care center for the community, receiving services for unwanted animals, humane

education programs and even a pet-themed gift shop-- all to benefit animals and the people who love them. The facility, at 17357 Edison Ave., opened in 2006 and is one of three Humane Society of Missouri animal adoption centers/veterinary clinics in the St. Louis area – there are also locations in Maryland Heights and St. Louis. The Chesterfield site was designated the Kuehner Center in 2014, endowed by Kim Kuehner in memory of his parents Horty and Howard Kuehner and his sister Kerry Kuehner. “All three centers together average about 8,400 pet adoptions a year, of not just dogs and cats but other critters like rabbits and guinea pigs,” said Angela Smith, the Humane Society of Missouri’s senior marketing manager. Since 1870, the Humane Society of Missouri has provided a safe and caring haven to all animals in need large and small - that have been abused, neglected or abandoned, she said. The animal welfare organization’s mission is to end the cycle of abuse and pet overpopulation through rescue and investigation efforts, spay/neuter programs and educational classes. The society is committed to creating lasting relationships between people and animals through its adoption programs. More than 80,000 animals and tens of thousands of children and adults benefit every year from the life-saving, life-enriching programs and services offered by the organization, Smith said. “We receive no funding from the United Way or other charities; any local, state or federal government entity; or any national animal welfare organizations,” she said. “We rely on support primarily through private contributions and fees from services, and that money goes mostly to animal care.” At the Kuehner Center, staff and volunteers total about 75 people. “We can always use more volunteers, who do things like help walk dogs, help with some of our humane education programs, do laundry like towels and bedding, lend a hand with administration and special events, and more,” Smith said. THE FLU: Are You in the Know? SIMPLE WAYS TO AVOID GETTING OR GIVING THE FLU

ARTICLE DR. ROBERT PAINO, MEDICAL DIRECTOR, ST. LUKE’S URGENT CARE CENTERS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

I

nfluenza (flu) season is quickly approaching, bringing with it the familiar chills, aches and runny nose everyone who has truly had the flu dreads. Often, the flu gets confused with more common stomach bugs or the ‘stomach flu;’ these illnesses are not the flu, nor are they related. Gastrointestinal symptoms (gastroenteritis) like vomiting and diarrhea can be uncommon flu symptoms, but are more often the result of food poisoning or a virus like norovirus or rotavirus. When determining if you or a family member has the flu, it is important to know what signs to look for. Common symptoms can include: • Fever* or feeling feverish/chills • Cough • Sore throat • Runny or stuffy nose • Muscle or body aches • Headaches • Fatigue (tiredness) • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults. * It's important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever. The flu virus can be easily spread through daily interactions and symptoms can develop within a couple of days of exposure to the virus. To combat the flu, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)

26

Chesterfield Lifestyle | September 2016

recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months and older, emphasizing that flu vaccination can reduce flu illnesses, doctors' visits and missed work and school due to flu illness and prevent flu-related hospitalizations. Getting vaccinated not only protects you, it protects those around you who might not be able to get a vaccine due to their age or a medical condition. The vaccine will not give you the flu; it does take about two weeks for full immunity to build up, so if you are exposed to the virus shortly before or within two weeks after you receive the vaccine, it is possible for you to get the flu. You may also contract a strain of the virus not covered by that year’s vaccine. The CDC cites that receiving the flu shot may cause soreness, redness and/or swelling from the shot, a headache, fever, nausea or muscle aches. When you suspect you have the flu, it is important to seek medical treatment quickly. Starting an antiviral medication within 48 hours of symptoms appearing can lessen symptoms and shorten the time you are sick by one or two days and help prevent flu complications such as pneumonia. If you have the flu, it is important to stay home to rest and try to minimize contact with others to avoid spreading the virus. Steps to avoid contracting the flu are fairly easy. The CDC recommends the following simple and common sense preventive actions: • Avoid exposure to sick individuals • Cover your mouth with your inner elbow when you cough or sneeze • Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently Utilizing these measures every day can help slow the spread of the germs and viruses that cause respiratory illnesses, like the flu. The peak flu season tends to be late fall and early winter, when

people are in closer contact indoors and at larger gatherings throughout the holidays; it is possible to contract the flu at anytime during the year. High risk groups, including young children, older adults and pregnant women, should talk with their doctor to discuss ways to minimize their risk of contracting the virus and avoiding complications from the flu. St. Luke’s Urgent Care Centers, with eight convenient locations throughout St. Louis and St. Charles Counties, offer yearly flu vaccinations. In addition to getting your flu shot, St. Luke’s Urgent Care Centers can also treat your family’s minor illnesses or injuries, especially when your primary care physicians’ office is not available or closed. Each center is fully-equipped with lab and X-ray services, as well as staffed by physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, X-ray and lab technicians. Our St. Luke’s Convenient Care is also available for your seasonal flu shots. Located inside Dierbergs Des Peres, St. Luke’s Convenient Care can treat minor illnesses and injuries such as sore throats, earaches and urinary tract infections for patients (2-years-old and up) on a walk-in basis. For more information on St. Luke’s Urgent Care Centers, St. Luke’s Convenient Care or for influenza vaccination prices, visit us online at StLukes-StL.com/Urgent-Care.

he Eye Care Charity of Mid-America is focusing on its mission of enhancing the quality of life, especially for children in need, by providing vision improvement through eye care services and eye health education. Headquartered at 732 Goddard Avenue in Chesterfield, the non-profit vision care organization was founded in 2004, said Kate McKearn, director of resource development. “We started because a former top executive in the eye care industry, Bill Jehling, had a mission of providing access to bright futures through vision care,” she said. “In our early years, we operated several fixed free vision clinics in low income neighborhoods to provide access to vision care for the underserved.” Services really took off in 2013, when the organization acquired, with the help of a major donation from Ronald McDonald House Charities, its Mobile Vision Clinic – which carries two fully equipped optometry offices, an optometry lab and dispensary, more than 200 frames and an experienced 34

optometrist and ophthalmologist on board. “Now, we operate totally out of the mobile vision clinic, which is an easier way to serve more people at schools or wherever there is a need,” McKearn said. In 2014, the organization expanded its reach to youth by increasing local mobile vision clinic visits. It targets low income students receiving free or reduced lunch in schools through St. Louis city and county. “Since 2013, we have visited 285 schools – including those in the Rockwood School District - conducted 5,846 eye exams, and dispensed 4,988 pairs of glasses,” McKearn said. “Our goal is reaching 2,500 children with exams this year.” Research shows that low income youth are at a greater risk of unrecognized and untreated vision problems and have a higher rate of unmet needs for vision care services, she said. “One of the most common reasons parents give for not taking kids to the eye doctor is the cost of care,” she said. “In addition to the expense, low income families often face additional barriers of limited transportation and inability to take time off of work. Our mobile vision clinic provides free eye care where it’s needed most, to overcome the barriers of access and expense to provide vision care for low income families.” Those working at the mobile vision clinic can create a complete pair of glasses on the spot for a student. “Within 15 to 20 minutes of a child stepping on the mobile vision clinic, they are able to walk off seeing clearly for the first time in their lives,” McKearn said.

“In four hours, we can see up to 40 children, and that’s why we created the mobile clinic - our reach is so much broader.” While the organization has only three full-time staff members, it has about 50 volunteers and can always use more. “We’re particularly looking for volunteer doctors who’d like to work with us on board the mobile vision clinic,” McKearn said. The group is funded through individual donations, corporate sponsorships and through grants and foundations. They also hold annual fundraisers to help raise money for the cause. On Aug. 27, the group held a Legends of Blues dinner and auction, with a Legends Golf Classic fundraiser held on Aug. 29. “People can still donate, to help out,” McKearn said. “Since 2013, 90 percent of the kids we’ve helped on the mobile vision clinic have improved their grades and behavior; obviously, we’re having an immediate impact.”
