Police indicate there were four additional calls for overdoses where nothing could be done to save victims. Local officers add that the ages of people related to these emergency calls range from late teens to early 60s, and that every race, gender, sexual orientation and economic status was represented. Chesterfield Police will host an “Opioid Summit” on Feb. 27. This event is open to all, not just Chesterfield residents. It will be held in the Chesterfield City Hall Council Chambers from 6:30 to 10 p.m. There will be numerous guest speakers, who are experts in the field, and several sponsor tables. He says the vehicle's versatility makes it wonderful for the "three and a half" seasons in this region, as well as for families and those with active lifestyles. "It's unique, different and fun, but it's a vehicle that you can live with every day," he adds. The Countryman also provides an optional picnic cushion seat to place in the back for impromptu tailgates or pulling over to enjoy majestic views. And, with the touchscreen navigation system of the MINI Countryman combined with Apple Carplay, drivers also get the pleasure of a dashing dashboard. When it comes to small crossovers, Neil says the Countryman is a wonderful and unique value because it is both powered and engineered by BMW.

TO CHESTERFIELD’S VARIED OUTDOOR ART ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON

DID YOU KNOW THERE ARE AT LEAST SIX PLACES TO ADMIRE OUTDOOR ARTWORK IN CHESTERFIELD? From traditional to contemporary, there are many

"Cultural Gateway"

artistic styles to take in!

Chesterfield Amphitheater 631 Veterans Place Drive The "Cultural Gateway" mandala—meaning "circle"— was created by artist Shilpa Rao to represent the universe. It's located at the south entrance of the amphitheater. "People from within the St. Louis area and from out of town, who were people from different walks of life, age and cultural backgrounds sat together around this piece and helped me complete it. It was interesting to see them feeding off each other's ideas," Shilpa says. Chesterfield Central Park 16365 Lydia Hill Drive "This Is Our Water"

Chesterfield Valley Athletic Center

17925 N. Outer 40 Road

Chesterfield Valley Athletic Center 17925 N. Outer 40 Road "This Is Our Water: The Missouri River Watershed" sculpture was designed by Hap Phillips and Stephanie Nelson-Pondrom, based on ideas created by the St. Louis Artworks apprentices from the Bloom Works Group. It suggests fish and flowing water. The other sculpture at the Athletic Center is called "Saturday's Distractions," a bronze piece completed by Lee Leuning and Sherri Treeby. It will be on display near Miracle Field for two years. Eberwein Park 1657 Old Baxter Road 22

Chesterfield Family Aquatic Center 16365 Lydia Hill Drive "Maura" is a bronze sculpture of a girl and her shadow created by Don Wiegand and dedicated on June 26, 1999, for Chesterfield's 10th anniversary. Every year, on June 26 at 10 a.m. Maura's actual shadow meets her sculpted shadow as a display of nature and art. The other artwork on display at the Aquatic Center is "Large Bather III." This life-size piece was done by Italian sculptor Emilio Greco.

Chesterfield Central Park 16365 Lydia Hill Drive "Birds In Flight" is a contemporary stainless steel piece designed by Fine Art Ltd. to provide simplistic scenery art. It's one of eight pieces of artwork in Central Park, with the others named: 1. "Aspire" (steel pipes and spires) 2. "The Awakening" (aluminum sculpture buried in the ground) 3. "Flow" (interactive sculpture to highlight native plants) 4. "The Fox" (bronze sculpture of young fox leaping) 5. "Gox A" (geometric forms made from circles, squares and rectangles) 6. "Everyone has a purpose, a lot of people make a difference, and that's what life is about. Life is a precious gift, whether you're famous or not. The truth is that we're all equal," says Don, who believes God loves all the souls he made. Alas, how did an artist with an international reputation and fan base get started in Chesterfield, a city in which he has lived since he was 5 years old? He says the camaraderie found in Chesterfield certainly helped. Read on for highlights of Don's life. 30

Perhaps a summer special-study program at Chautauqua Institute in New York helped to cement this artist's dream to shape it into a career, as he learned to trust the essence of his own soul and let it go. /the sculptor Much of Don's day-to-day artwork is done privately for people not in societal limelight. He likes making a poignant stand in that private world because his mantra is that "all people are important." Additionally, some of Don's most well-known subjects/renderings were of Mark Twain, Stan the Man Musial, National Shrine of Mary/Mother of the Church, Charles Lindbergh, Bob Hope, Amelia Earhart, August A. Busch Jr., Pope John Paul II, Tennessee Williams, Ernest Hemingway, Cliff Roberston, Winston Churchill, Dr. Martin Luther King and Pope Francis. He's also very fond of the piece he did for former U.S. President George H.W. Bush and former First Lady Barbara.

LOCAL WOMAN WITH DISABILITY SEEKS TO BOOST SELF-ESTEEM OF OTHERS, STOP BULLYING

MARQUETTE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE GRACE STROBEL WAS BORN WITH AN EXTRA DNA CHROMOSOME CARRIED BY THOSE WITH DOWN SYNDROME, YET SHE PASSIONATELY PROCLAIMS THE DISORDER DOES NOT DEFINE WHO SHE IS. You see, Grace was born with another extra: the gift to be present in each moment to share kindness and authentically recognize others' needs to be accepted for who they are. That's why Grace is on her own personal crusade to enlighten local students through presentations and to raise awareness about individual abilities through her social media platform. What more defines Grace is her love of the color blue; honing her drawing skills; cooking; hanging out with her friends; working out; and driving her sister, Laine, crazy. She also enjoys movies, such as Freaky Friday. "I hope students might start to understand what it's like to have a disability and how hard things are sometimes for us. Things that most people do without thinking about them," Grace says. "It also hurts me to see 36

someone being made fun of, because I've gone through that myself, and the pain is deep. I hope students will see that even though we might look a little different, we all want and need the same things: to be included, believed in, loved and respected. We all have gifts and talents." The 22-year-old says the most challenging part about creating an informative presentation was the practicing and rehearsing. "I have to work very hard at my presentation skills, like looking at the audience, speaking slowly, and having lots of energy and enthusiasm. I spend time each week rehearsing. I want to keep getting better and better," Grace says. During the student interactions, Grace says she loves to joke around, which is rewarding when students laugh with her and have fun. "My biggest joy is at the end when the students want to give me a hug, a high-five or just say hello to me and tell me how much they liked the presentation." Grace's parting message to students often is to make ripples with kindness. On-site school experiences aren't always positive for Grace, however. In 2017, while she was working at a school to help students in the lunchroom, she says some students poked fun at her.

HOW TO BEST ADD WARMTH TO PERSONAL RESTROOMS ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY THOMPSON PRICE KITCHENS/BATHS/HOMES

BATHROOMS ARE A PLACE TO RELAX, RENEW AND REFRESH. That's partially why warm bathroom floors and towel warmers are becoming extremely popular, says Laura Grosman of Thompson Price Kitchens/Baths/Homes in Des Peres. "We're taking out a lot of bathtubs and putting in larger showers," she says. "We only recommend keeping a tub if the homeowner truly uses it, and we suggest a true soaker tub."

RENOVATE & REFINE

(CON TI N U ED)

Thompson Price remodeling experts know bath remodeling is about way more than putting in new faucets. "There's an explosion of material options to make bathroom remodels as beautiful as they are functional," Laura says. She says their work is definitely not a "bath in a box" approach, but rather designed and custom-built to each client's space and needs. She adds that underfloor heating systems are frequent requests. These days, bathrooms are becoming more about functional luxury. Those considering bathroom remodeling projects may want to contemplate the following regional and national 2019 trends for bathroom remodeling: + Black is the new gray. Richer, darker tones are picking up in popularity. They're being used in light fixtures, vanities and mirrors, along with matte finishes. + In 2019, smart bathrooms even include smart showers, mini fridges and automatic sinks—perhaps with built-in blue tooth speaker systems. 42
