Planes, trains, automobiles...and busses! W

hen I turned 16, I didn’t get my own car (with an enormous red bow wrapped around it) like I had often fantasized. I was fortunate though, because I got to drive my mom’s car most any time I wanted—and she had a very nice car. My mom worked downtown, in the federal government building; after I turned 16, she started taking the bus to work…and I got to drive myself (and friends) to and from school in that super sweet car!

Friends of my mom were surprised that she would ride a bus to work; they endearingly teased her about it a bit. Mom explained that the bus was convenient (it came to the top of our street right off of Clayton Rd.), comfortable (it was clean, had plush seats and great climate control), calming (it meant Mom could read and relax rather than fighting morning commuter traffic), and cost-effective (it had an economically priced monthly pass and meant no gas, no car maintenance and no parking fees). My mom grew up riding public transportation back in the day — she even took a trolley car to school; it was second nature to her when a bus stop was added close by.

At 16, all I wanted to do was drive. Driving was the most enjoyable part of any journey, to me. Now, nearly 30 years later, I can finally understand the reasons my mom took the bus to work when she didn’t have to. It was the way she most enjoyed her daily journey—not driving. Clearly, our choices in transportation will vary depending on our resources, preferences, needs and availabilities at any given time in our lives. Our “Wheels and Wings” issue examines some unique aspects of transportation and the journeys associated with them. So let’s go!

LOCAL GIRL SCOUT EARNS GOLD AWARD A local Girl Scout’s Gold Award project made such an impressive impact on her community, that even though she’s already earned the honor, she’s working with the community to host the project again. Myra Dotzel, a junior this year at Parkway Central High School, worked with her school’s Project Health Club, South Minster Presbyterian Church, Green Trails Elementary and Sam’s Club to collect more than 6,000 items for the VA Medical Center located at Jefferson Barracks. The items included supplies like toothbrushes, deodorant, shaving cream, coats and underwear. In addition to collecting and delivering the supplies, Myra also increased awareness about the needs of veterans in the area. Knowing that young children will shape the future of the country, she taught students at Green Trails Elementary about volunteerism and collecting items for the veterans, inspiring them to help with the collection. Parkway Central’s Project Health Club, South Minster Presbyterian Church and Sam’s Club have all agreed to help sponsor the collection again next year. Less than one percent of all Girl Scouts earn the Girl Scout Gold Award. Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award puts girls among an exceptional group of women who have used their knowledge and leadership skills to make a difference in the world. Some of the Gold Awardee benefits are: • A Girl Scout who has earned her Gold Award and enlists in the U.S. Armed Forces, immediately rises one level in rank • Colleges and universities recognize the achievements and leadership abilities of Girl Scout Gold Award recipients by offering scholarship programs • Achievements of the Girl Scout Gold Award recipients are acknowledged by many government and non-profit organizations About Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri - Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri is committed to building girls of courage, confidence

and character who make the world a better place. To join, volunteer or donate to Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, call 800.727.GIRL or visit GirlScoutsEM.org.

Early roadtrips

Counting Cars ARTICLE AIMEE PELLET | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

S

ometimes the way we view history becomes skewed--as if everything that happened before our own lifetimes occurred all at once. For instance, we think of train travel as a dated mode of transportation. However, consider this: Thomas Jefferson never lived to see a steam-powered train. That’s really quite amazing that one of the fathers of westward expansion conceived the idea without having seen the speed with which we can now travel to these once-distant areas. Trains certainly changed the possibilities of what the country could and would become. Perhaps no invention changed peoples’ personal travel opportunities the way the car did. While automobiles evolved slowly through the end of the 19th century, it wasn’t until Henry Ford put those metal contraptions on an assembly line in 1908 that cars became affordable to the masses. While still considered a luxury by many, a car was at least within reach of many in the middle class. Suddenly, people could travel beyond the confines of their own cities—and travel they did! The 1920s saw the completion of Route 66, from St. Louis to California. The emergence of the first road trips began, when “Tin Can” tourists took to the road in their Tin Lizzies, as Model Ts were affectionately known. Businesses sprung up to accommodate the tourists who could wander the roads at their own leisure, rather than being beholden to train schedules and urban environments. For instance, hotels were something usually only seen in cities. Entrepreneurs then created the motel--a combination of “motor” and “hotel”--that allowed travelers to pull directly to the front door. The first motels even had individual carports.

12

Chesterfield Lifestyle | October 2015

With the car’s evolution, followed by the creation of the highway system, supported in great part by petroleum companies, came changes to everyday life as well. People could not only travel occasionally, but they could make different choices in where they lived and worked. So, along came the suburbs, turning Chesterfield from an agriculturallyfocused community into an enclave of the larger St. Louis area. Nevertheless, the evolution was not necessarily a speedy one. One of my mom’s childhood recollections in the 1940s is sitting at my great-grandmother’s house on Olive Street Road, counting the cars that passed. “In the evenings my grandma and I would sit on the front porch and listen to the quiet sounds of dusk - crickets, katydids, voices in the distance and each pick a number. Then we eagerly counted each car that passed the house on Olive Street Road to see whose number was the winner. Usually it was between 3 and 7 ...over a span of an hour or two.” I remember the same car counting game, but by the time I played, I had to be a slightly faster counter. Of course, the most vivid auto-related memory of my youth is watching the traffic of Olive Street Road at a complete standstill as drivers waited in seemingly endless lines for gasoline during the energy crisis of the late 1970s. Now, with four lanes and more intense travel, the game might be a true challenge. Think how different our landscapes would be without all of the vestiges that accompany an auto-driven society. The next time you drive through Chesterfield, take a look around. What would the landscape look like without parking lots, drive-thru restaurants, motels and gas stations? All were born out of the history of the automobile.

Wings of Hope IMPROVING AND SAVING LIVES: WORLDWIDE ARTICLE MARY SHAPIRO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

V

olunteers are the heart and hands of the Nobel Peace Prize-nominated Wings of Hope nonprofit charitable organization based at the Spirit of St. Louis Airport complex in Chesterfield, according to Anne Volland. Volland is director of administration and field director for Wings’ medical relief and air transport program headquartered at 18370 Wings of Hope Blvd. The group’s mission is to help the poor, domestically and internationally, with sustainable programs, such as health and education systems, food and water processes, opportunities for family income, community building and conflict resolution. Wings of Hope operates the St. Louis Medical Relief and Air Transport Program throughout the Midwest and delivers advanced health care to children who have major birth defects or who are dying from rare illnesses by providing vital transportation. Wings of Hope operates a fleet of ambulances at no cost to users; services are also offered to adults facing major health issues that can’t be solved locally. Volland said the organization’s philosophy is, “tell us what you need and we do whatever it takes.” Wings of Hope was founded in 1962 by four area business executives. Hearing about a nurse in Kenya who needed help reaching out to women and children the group decided to provide her with resources. 14

Chesterfield Lifestyle | October 2015

“We are nonpolitical and nonsectarian and don’t take money from any government organization,” Volland says. “We operate entirely through donations and we use a lot of volunteers: we have over 600 in the St. Louis area. We are the largest volunteer-based charity in the Midwest, almost completely volunteer run. These volunteers do everything from purchasing and accounting to administration, reception, pilots and medics. Half of our mechanics are volunteers.” Wings’ Medical Relief and Air Transport program is the organization’s largest effort. “We fly a little over 400 flights a year,” Volland says. “If a parent or caregiver calls and says a child is ill and needs to get from A to B location, we take them at no cost as often as they need until they’re cured or improved." Wings offers the only free air transportation program in the United States, Volland says. “When we talk about the poor and destitute, oftentimes we think of those overseas,” she says. “But, even in the United States, there are people without running water or without resources to get to help. We’ll often hear about a parent who’s been

told their child was di- agnosed with a rare disease, and the doctor in their small town doesn’t know what direction to point them in. So we often act as patient advocates and have volunteer doctors and nurses research the illness, find the best care facility or treatment center, and call to see if the child can be seen at no cost.” Volland explains the Medical Relief and Air Transport Program serves approximately 400 area families a year; globally, Wings serves thousands. “Not only do we have airplanes at different bases to do medical air transport, but we also have sustainability projects, such as one for food in Ecuador,” Volland says. “In that country, there are many remote tribes without a sustainable food source, so we have a program we’ve started with a handful of villages: the chicken food sustainability program. We buy chickens in country, take them to people in villages, and teach people how to raise them, so that they have eggs to eat. Also, as the chickens reproduce, people can share the birds with neighboring villages, which has a trickle-down effect.”

Wings of Hope was twice nominated, in 2011 and 2012, for a Nobel peace prize for its overall operations. The organization’s work fills a never ending and worldwide need. “As we grow, and the more we help, the farther the word spreads about us,” Volland says. “We’ve been able to help so many because of the volunteer numbers we have.We work toward helping people take care of themselves, mentoring them as advocates, sometimes monetarily but also with aircraft, supplies, or whatever they need to be successful.” For example, in Kenya the group partners with the Transfedha organization that focuses on work with impoverished mothers and young children to help them develop small businesses. “We help provide microloans to families to help them work and earn money so their kids can go to school and get an education,” Volland says. In Cambodia, Wings works with an English speaking program and has helped build a school and library there. “The program lets the kids, once they learn English, go to universities and get a higher education,” Volland says. “Most people in these remote areas are farmers and live in poverty their whole life, with it passed down from generation to generation, and we can stop that.” At Spirit Airport, the Wings' aircraft fleet is around 60 but only three are used on mission flights here at this time. “People donate aircraft to us, and they are often in different states of repair when we get them,” Volland says. “We have volunteers work to refurbish them. We can always use donations of not just money but also in-kind or other items. We even have an eBay department that sells donated items, and the money received goes into our programs.” For more information about Wings of Hope or to volunteer, call 636.537.1302 or visit Wings-Of-Hope.org.

public transportation in chesterfield AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENT OF LOCAL JOB STRATEGY

MetroBus by Chesterfield City Hall Artful bench at Chesterfield Bus Stop

ARTICLE MARY SHAPIRO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

P

lans are underway for additional MetroBus stops in Chesterfield: in the valley area, a haven for retail development with many employees who rely on public transportation. John Nations is a resident of Chesterfield, former mayor of the city and now is president and chief executive officer of the Bi-State Development Agency of the Missouri Illinois Metropolitan District. He’s long been an advocate of public transportation in West County. “Public transit to me was always an essential element of the economic and job growth strategy out here,” Nations says. In 2009, confronting drastic cutbacks in the Metro public transportation system, which threatened service to Chesterfield, Nations as mayor worked with Metro to successfully preserve service to his city. The plan, at the time, was to cut all the routes west of Interstate 270. “A lot of our 26,000 full-time jobs in Chesterfield at that time were dependent on public transportation, so I pledged city funds and got JARC ( Job Access and Reverse Commute program) grants to keep buses going,” Nations says. Later that year, Nations was asked by Bi-State/Metro Chairman Vincent C. Schoemehl, Jr., and then-President Robert J. Baer to lead a campaign in St. Louis County to provide funding for the Metro system. It was after previous ballot proposals had failed twice and Metro then had to cut service by a third. A Proposition A countywide half-cent sales tax was approved in April of 2010 under Nations’ leadership. In October of 2010, Nations began his current job after the Bi-State Development Agency Board of Commissioners selected Nations to succeed Baer. Nations says three MetroBus routes primarily serve Chesterfield: the No. 158 Clayton Ballas, the No. 258 Clayton Chesterfield (which provides service in the Interstate 64 corridor) and the No. 91 Olive (which takes Olive all the way to the Forest Park-DeBaliviere MetroLink station). Average weekday ridership over the last fiscal year for the 258 route is about 560 people a day, compared to about 150 for the 158 route and about 1,800 for the 91. Cost of MetroBus is $2 for a one way trip, or $2.50 to board MetroLink.

16

There’s a preliminary study, in the planning stages, underway for bus rapid transit – where routes have limited stops and dedicated on-off stations on the interstate, as well as faster travel times - and two corridors in the region were selected for more study. One of those would go from downtown St. Louis out the I-64 corridor to Chesterfield. However, there’s no timeline to make a decision, Nations explains. In Chesterfield, Metro is always looking at how to tweak its services depending on where jobs pop up, he says. “We’ve gotten requests in recent years to provide service to the two Chesterfield Valley area outlet malls, but there can be significant costs involved to do that. So far, there’s been no additional appropriation from anyone to pay for that service. We’re open to doing it we but can’t do anything without identifying a funding source.” However, his organization is working on a partnership with Chesterfield through the valley’s transportation development district (which Nations put in place as mayor), and they’ve entered into an agreement to fund placement of bus stops in the valley. Mike Geisel, director of public services for Chesterfield, says the department has been working with Metro and St. Louis County for over a year. “Metro has narrowed the initial proposal to 11 suggested locations and is submitting them to the County for permits,” he explains, though he’s unsure when the permitting would be completed, allowing construction to start. Nation says, “Public transportation is an essential element of the job strategy in Chesterfield, because there are industries like St. Luke’s Hospital – which is the largest employer in Chesterfield and among the largest users of public transit – as well as many Chesterfield nursing homes and our retail and office sectors in which a lot of workers, particularly custodial, rely on public transit to get to their jobs."

n automobile is far more than a method of transportation; for the enthusiast it is an expression of self. For many, the automobile is a status symbol. For the technically-oriented individual, precisely engineered components achieving maximum performance are paramount. For those whose interest is aesthetic in nature, designs exemplifying speed, elegance, comfort and style are the focus. Automobile purists are uniquely served in the Midwest by St. Louis Motorcars. The foundation of St. Louis Motorcars was built on a pledge to provide the highest possible standards of flawless detail and a distinction of excellence while representing the finest luxury motorcars and supercars in the world. The proprietors of St. Louis Motorcars, Graham Hill and Jim Mills, share this love of the automobile. Each partner brings special talents, to the business, assuring the fulfillment of the mission statement. Graham Hill, president of St. Louis Motorcars, is the driving force behind the sales team. Born in England, Graham moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in 1985. His first job in the American car business was with The Steering Wheel, a Maserati dealer on Sunrise Boulevard. By 1987, Hill had joined Bentley and Rolls-Royce Motorcars in Ft. Lauderdale becoming the youngest Rolls-Royce & Bentley salesperson in the USA. Graham rapidly became one of the top sales producers in the US market, climaxing in 1997, becoming the top salesperson in the United States. After 20 years in Florida, Hill moved to St. Louis to open Bentley St. Louis with business partner Jim Mills. Mills ran a $200 million corporation and held positions of increasing responsibility with

$100+ million corporations in the previous 15 years of his business career; Mills has excellent business experience, knowledge and acumen. In September of 2001, the pair began operating out of a warehouse on St. Charles Rock Road as the first Bentley and Roll-Royce dealership in St. Louis. They purchased 2.8 acres off of Chesterfield Airport Road in Chesterfield Valley for $1.5 million and spent $3 million to build the 24,000-square-foot facility intended to be the Bentley/Rolls-Royce showroom and service department which would open on December 7, 2002. Hill says, “We wanted to create a destination dealership, one which would be easy to get to and Chesterfield afforded us more space to build two large showrooms.” Their first year in operation resulted in Bentley St. Louis being the 4th largest volume Bentley dealer in the USA. Currently, Bentley has just introduced the Bentayga, Bentley’s first SUV boasting a highly efficient 12-cylinder, technologically advanced engine, which will make it the fastest production SUV on the planet. In March of 2003, St. Louis Motorcars became a factory authorized Maserati dealer. In that year, they sold 150 motorcars totaling $20 million. Maserati currently offers the Ghibli, Quattroporte, GranTurismo, and GranTurismo Convertible models, each with several performance variations. Hill and Mills then made the decision to seek a Lamborghini dealership due to the high volume of Ferrari’s in the area. Negotiations from 2005-2006 eventually brought a Lamborghini dealership to St. Louis Motorcars. In 2008, a second 22,000-squareCONTINUED >

foot showroom was completed adjacent the Bentley and Maserati showroom. The $5 million construction stocked the Lamborghini line and eventually would go on to house the Bugatti, Lotus, RollsRoyce, and Aston Martin lines. This Lamborghini dealership resulted in the company selling its most expensive car to date--at $4.1 million. The Lamborghini Veneno sports a carbon fiber construction lightweight design which gives it a weight to power ratio of 1.99kg/hp and a top speed of 220 MPH. Only three Venenos were made for the world and of the 100+ Lamborghini dealers worldwide, St. Louis Motorcars sold one of them. Also among the Lamborghinis sold by the company was the Lamborghini Reventon of which only 20 were produced worldwide and nine sold in North America. The sports car featuring scissor doors, a V12 engine, 640 horsepower, and fourwheel drive was priced at $1.5 million. The Bugatti dealership, an upscale and developmental subsidiary of Volkswagen, was attained in December of 2007. The most recently announced model from Bugatti is the Chiron. Lighter and more responsive than its predecessor, 1500 pounds of torque, and a top speed of over 273 MPH, the Bugatti Chiron is likely to be the fastest production car in the world with styling befitting the performance. The Chiron will be an exclusive model with only 500 being produced and priced at $2.5-3 million. In September of 2008, Lotus offered St. Louis Motorcars a dealership. The British manufacturer is based at the former site of RAF Hethel, a World War II airfield in Norfolk, England. Lotus is noted for impressive performance from small to moderate size engines. With supercar acceleration from 0-60 MPH in just 4.1 seconds, the Lotus Evora is the fastest production Lotus ever. This performance is from a 400-horsepower, 3.5 litre V6 engine. St. Louis Motorcars lost the Rolls-Royce dealership in 2003 when Bentley split from Rolls-Royce. In November of 2008, Hill and Mills went to the St. Louis Auto show where they met with

Matt Lynch, regional representative for Rolls-Royce. Lynch took off his Rolls-Rolls pin and pinned it to Hill’s lapel signifying the acceptance of St. Louis Motorcars as a Rolls-Royce dealership after years of struggle. In early 2009, Roll-Royce vehicles finally took their place in the showroom. This legendary car maker is famous for making the most elite luxury cars in the world with amenities such as embroidered seats, personalized hood ornaments, built-in bars, a selection of wheels, car covers, and much more. When the Aston Martin dealership on Manchester Road in West County closed in the fall of 2010, St. Louis Motorcars took over as the area dealership. Aston Martin is noted for the association of its performance cars with the James Bond series. St. Louis Motorcars donated the use of two Aston Martin’s for the SSM DePaul Charity Gala last month, to bolster the event’s theme: James Bond. Throughout the history of the organization, St. Louis Motorcars, located at One Arnage Boulevard, in Chesterfield, has been in the “Top 10” in new vehicle sales for nearly every brand they represent. St. Louis Motorcars has become the mecca for luxury and supercar enthusiasts in the Central Midwest. STL Motorcars One Arnage Blvd Chesterfield, MO 63005 855.971.4103 STLMotorcars.com

IS THERE A BETTER

Mammogram?

DEMYSTIFYING MAMMOGRAPHY AND PREVENTIVE BREAST HEALTH

ARTICLE PAULA GEORGE, M.D. | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

R

esearch shows that regular breast cancer screening saves lives. Mammography has been the gold standard in breast cancer detection for years. More recently, a breakthrough technology has revolutionized mammography. Digital breast tomosynthesis, also called 3D mammography, is a screening and diagnostic tool that may improve early breast cancer detection by up to 40 percent. With a conventional 2D digital mammogram, the exam produces two pictures of a woman’s breast tissue when compressed. With a 3D mammography exam, the X-ray arm moves around the breast and produces a 3D image of the breast tissue in thin, one millimeter layers. This gives the radiologist viewing the images a much clearer picture of the breast tissue and all its complexities. Sometimes breast tissue can overlap, especially in women with dense breasts, hiding masses or abnormal areas. With 3D images, the radiologist is able to view the layers of breast tissue in slices, seeing breast detail in a way never before possible. The additional 3D images can significantly improve early breast cancer detection, as well as reduce the chance a patient will be called back for follow-up imaging by up to 40 percent. Other advantages of 3D mammography: 24

Chesterfield Lifestyle | October 2015

• It complements standard 2D mammography and is performed at the same time with the same system. • There is no additional compression required with a 3D exam. • Very low X-ray energy is used; nearly the same as a conventional mammogram and well below FDA safety standards for mammography. • It is approved for all women who can have conventional 2D mammograms and can be especially useful for screening women with dense breast tissue. • It is currently covered by most Medicare plans. Some private health insurance providers may charge a small out-of-pocket fee for the additional scan. With so many mixed messages about when to start getting mammograms and how often, what type of mammogram is best-combined with fears some women have that mammograms might be painful, many women don’t get these important breast cancer screenings when they should. Annual mammograms are recommended for women beginning at age 40. Breast cancer is most CONTINUED > treatable when found early.

Clinical Breast Exam (CBE) – manual examination by a healthcare provider, looking and feeling the breasts and under the arms for anything unusual, including lumps. Screening Mammogram – produces X-ray images of the breast used to check for breast cancer in women who have no signs or symptoms of the disease. Diagnostic Mammogram – also produces X-ray images of the breast, but it is performed as a follow-up to an abnormal screening mammogram or if a woman has breast symptoms, such as a lump. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) – uses a magnet, radio waves and a computer to make a series of detailed pictures of areas inside the body. It is suggested for women with a greater than 20 percent lifetime risk of developing breast cancer, family history of breast or ovarian cancer, and women who have been treated for Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Ultrasound – uses sound waves to produce images. The image may show whether a lump is solid, filled with fluid or a mixture of both.
