Editor’s Letter
Here comes the bride. T
o me, there isn’t anything more exciting to celebrate in this life than a wedding. To marry the person you will spend the rest of your life with, the vows you speak over one another... it’s such a special moment where promises and hope collide.
The elegant Bella Rosa Estate provides a beautiful venue for that very purpose. This modern day palace is every bride's dream wedding locale. The history, ballroom and gardens alone are sure to sweep any love-struck couple right off their feet. In this issue, Judy Taylor also tells us all about her non-profit floral school, the only one in the entire state. The first semester is starting in the fall and is open to anyone who wants to learn more about a future in floral design and business. Judy feels that it is her time to give back and this is exactly how she’s going to do it. Are you a bride looking for that absolutely perfect gown? Uptown Bridal & Boutique can surely help you out. Read how the sisters who own the store got started doing what they love to do. When it comes to planning a wedding, most grooms would agree that budget is definitely at the top of their list. With all that’s involved, it is important to know how to make decisions about where to spend your money. We have some great tips for making wise financial choices when it comes to choosing a photographer. Though it may seem like something to scrimp on, photographs are the only tangible things you have left when your wedding day is over.

With all the considerations of planning a wedding -- the venue, the dress, the floral arrangements, the photographer, and everything in between -- making sure everything is perfect is easier said than done. My only advice to all the brides out there is… Breath. Everything turns out exactly as it should. Plus, I always say that if everything goes too perfectly, the memories just won't be as fun. Most importantly, from your wedding day on, always put your spouse before yourself, and pray together. I have found that with these two things, my husband and I as a couple are unstoppable.

en years ago when identical twin sisters Nicole Gould and Tonia Tinker got married in the Valley they were both teachers in Chandler Unified School District. As daughters of long-time entrepreneurs, the sisters felt compelled to purchase their wedding dresses from a locally-owned boutique, yet through their experience, they realized there were no options. Following their dreams to open a family-owned bridal boutique, the sisters opened Uptown Bridal & Boutique in Historic Downtown Chandler in 2007 and have been dedicated to helping brides-tobe find the perfect gown for that special day ever since. PERSONALIZED APPROACH
It’s no surprise that wedding gown shopping can be overwhelming for many brides and their families. Today with so many choices in material, style, cut, color and length, the process of selecting “the one” can be daunting. Often the inspira12

tion for the ceremony, reception and bridal party, the wedding gown sets the tone for the entire event. Bridal consultants at Uptown Bridal assist brides through the entire process. “Today brides have so many of their own ideas and are inspired through social media,” says Nicole Gould. “We have a page on Pinterest for our socially-savvy clients so that they can view our designers and visualize different colors and looks.” During a recommended scheduled appointment, brides are connected with a personal bridal consultant for 90 minutes who will provide guidance and support. Walk-in visitors are welcome depending on fitting room and consultant availability. “Brides can look at the different styles and can try on various silhouettes to find the perfect gown,” Gould says. “We tailor each appointment to accommodate her and the people she loves.” The bridal consultant keeps the bride comfortable while she tries on between seven and 10 gowns and assists with the process of
carefully stepping in and out of each gown. Clipping tools allow brides to visualize the perfect fit. Sample gowns range in size between 10 and 24W and special orders for new gown are placed. A private lounge area for two or three guests includes bridal-themed movies, runway shows, magazines and other fun goodies including pink tissues for family members and friends. “It is an absolutely emotional experience for everyone,” Gould says. “It’s that feeling a bride has in a dress once she finds the one that makes our jobs incredible.” DESIGNER GOWNS
Wedding gowns at Uptown Bridal are prestigiously designed all around the world and include collections from Australia and Europe and Los Angeles. Twice yearly, the sisters hand select gowns from spring and fall designer collections at fashion events across the country. “We personally know the designers,” Gould says. “It gives us an opportunity to ask questions about forecasted styles so we can be fashion forward.” Uptown Bridal is the only bridal boutique in Arizona with an exclusive agreement with designer Enzoani, offering a more youthful, moderately priced couture collection of gowns. Gowns at Uptown Bridal range from $700 up to $6,000. Half of the payment is required at the time of purchase.
“We can accommodate any bride, her style and budget,” Gould says. As a special order bridal boutique, gowns at Uptown Bridal are all custom ordered and can take between 1 to 6 months to receive after placing an order depending on the designer. A FAMILY AFFAIR
In addition to wedding gowns, Uptown Bridal offers bridesmaids dresses, veils, jewelry and accessories. There is also a gift boutique for the bridal party and wedding essentials such as wine glasses and cake toppers available for purchase. The renovated 1918 historic building is not only beautiful but welcoming and warm. “We know our brides want to share the memory,” Gould says. “It’s equally special for the mom as it is for the daughter.” LOCATION, HOURS
Conveniently situated in Historic Downtown Chandler, Uptown Bridal is located at 11 West Boston Street, Suite 3. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. While an appointment is not required, it is strongly recommended, and can be made online at UptownBrides.com or by calling 480. 242.9408. Uptown Bridal offers a wide range of gowns for every blushing bride. “We get to hear love stories every day,” Gould says. “We truly have the best jobs.” Learn more at UptownBrides.com.

Wedding Consultants at Kate & Company DESIGNING, ORCHESTRATING AND SIMPLIFYING THE WEDDING EXPERIENCE FOR COUPLES ARTICLE MEGHANN FINN SEPULVEDA
A
n industry expert, Kate Christensen, owner of Kate & Company in Chandler, has been planning events in the Valley since 1983. From corporate events and conventions to intimate birthday dinners and destination weddings, Christensen and her team have the experience and knowledge to handle all the fine details that are involved in creating a beautiful and memorable wedding experience. CONSIDER A WEDDING CONSULTANT
Depending on whether the couple wants to actively plan every aspect of their wedding from rehearsal dinner to the ceremony and reception, a wedding consultant may be something to consider. “A lot of couples just don’t have the time to research all that is entailed in planning a wedding such as invitations, caterers and florists,” says Christensen. “It can be very overwhelming.” While most large hotels and resorts offer wedding planners as part of the venue package, there isn’t typically someone designated to help with the decisions that don’t take place on the property. “It’s what we live and breathe,” Christensen says. “We’re here to support, enhance and complete the experience.” With the average cost of a wedding ranging between $27,000 and $30,000, wedding consultants can usually negotiate prices with vendors and work within a budget. They can provide full service planning, wedding day coordination, final touches assistance and offer hourly consultations. “We understand the value of the overall budget and can make it affordable without losing the vision and the inspiration from the couple,” Christensen added. 14

RANGE OF SERVICES
If you’re thinking of hiring a wedding consultant, an initial meeting with Kate & Company is complimentary. For brides desiring full wedding planning, services include planning sessions, email and phone communication, etiquette advice, a personalized wedding checklist and detailed timeline and budget development and management. Also included are things like customized wedding design, assistance with invitation and menu selections, event day itinerary, and on-site coordination. The wedding consultants at Kate & Company are always thinking ahead and come prepared. A wedding consultant can assist in reviewing vendor contracts and confirm responsibilities prior to the big day. They can also supervise collection and organization of gifts and distribute flowers and bouquets to the bridal party and attendants. Hourly consultations are ideal for those DIY brides and couples in need of a few recommendations and vendor advice. WEDDING WEDNESDAYS
Kate & Company launched Wedding Wednesdays at the start of 2015 at SoHo63, a hip and historic wedding venue in Downtown Chandler. These complimentary monthly workshops are intended to edu-

HOW MAKING ROOM IN YOUR BUDGET FOR HIGH-QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHY CAN MAKE YOUR SPECIAL DAY LAST A LIFETIME
ARTICLE RACHEL HAWKINSON PHOTOGRAPHY ACE & WHIM PHOTOGRAPHY, AMY & JORDAN PHOTOGRAPHY AND JESSICA Q PHOTOGRAPHY
S
ome call it “the most important day of your life.” Many spend thousands of dollars to create a fairy-tale event representative of everything that is style and perfection to all who see it. So why is it that so many soon-to-be brides and grooms don’t take the same care in capturing that day and its moments as they do in creating it? Why would they take a chance on a “friend of a friend” or “someone who will do it for cheap” but who has no experience photographing weddings, as well as no proof their vision matches that of the couple’s? While the cost of wedding photography can be daunting, there is no doubt that making it one of your primary expenses will be worth it in the long run. “Photographs are the only tangible thing you have left of your wedding day,” says wedding photographer Jessica Wong from Jessica Q Photography. For that reason, Wong recommends setting your wedding budget early on and making adjustments to other aspects of the day. “I had created my own centerpieces with fake flowers and used the floral budget towards a great team of wedding photography and video coverage. Your flowers will die, and all the other stuff only lasts for one day, but photography is forever.” Jordan Demos, half of the married photography duo that makes up Amy and Jordan Photography, agrees that no matter what your overall budget may be, that it’s important to spend more on the photographer and make cuts other places. “When it’s all over, that’s all you have left,” he explains. While it may seem obvious to have a photographer suggest that you set a larger percentage of your day’s budget to photography, their motivation is pure. Karie Denny is an experienced photographer. She and her husband, Field, comprise the fine art photography team of Ace & Whim. They have seen countless brides get caught up in making their wedding the event of the year, but leave their grooms to feel helpless and flustered. “Focus on being engaged and in love instead,” Denny suggests. “Weddings are CONTINUED >

Financial Fitness (CONTINUED) chaotic and fast-paced. You want a photographer who has worked under that much pressure before and can take the lead.” So instead of your Aunt Martha with the nice camera or your mom’s neighbor who offered to do it for only $100, an experienced wedding photographer can take the lead and save you some stress. It is more than worth the investment. Another important focus in selecting a photographer for your big day should be your connection to the photographer and their work. Wong suggests meeting with them in person so you can ensure you have a good vibe. Meeting will solidify that both personalities mesh and the experience will be a good one for all involved. “You’ll be spending more time with the person clicking the shutter than anyone else on the wedding day, so make sure you like them and can picture them as 'one of the girls' or 'one of the guys.'” Denny agrees that a connection to the photographer’s style is also important. “There should be a connection to the artist’s work,” she explains. “If there is not and you hire them anyway, you may be disappointed in what you get.” The value of quality wedding photography on your big day goes beyond a group photo of you and your cousins from New Hampshire that you haven’t seen in seven years. And it’s more than someone taking a photo of the bride in her dress. Demos, Denny and Wong may vary in styles and price points for their services, but they are all passionate when they speak about past couples and share a similar commitment to the importance of the day. “Our goal is to preserve a couple’s love in its raw, pure, joyous, unfiltered, emotional state for generations to come,” Demos explains. “That way, 50 years from now, when our clients are grandparents, they’ll open their wedding album and feel the real, fresh, vibrant emotion come back to life. And, their granddaughter who just got engaged herself can see how much her grandpa truly loved her grandma.” And let’s face it - party favors, open bar and five-course meals could never be (and should never be) more important that that.

Where Wedding Dreams Come True

about every young girl grows up dreaming about her wedJust ding day. She dreams of marrying wonderful, handsome guy who swept her off her feet. In her dream, she wears a gorgeous gown and her wedding takes place in a storybook setting, as she becomes a Princess for the day. Everything is perfect, including dancing with her Prince at the Wedding Ball. Those beautiful dreams can come true with the help of Bella Rose Estate, located at the Manor house in Chandler. This home has been transformed into a modern day palace and wedding venue. For a day, a couple can use the beautiful 3,000-squarefoot home, the two acres of gardens and the 5,000 square-foot ballroom--all designed with primarily one focus, to help make wedding dreams come true. THE HISTORY
The Manor house was originally built as a private residence in 1975 by a cattle rancher. His family had moved to Chandler in the 1900s and they owned 800 acres. His wife’s family moved there in 1869 and owned 620 acres. Farming and cattle ranching were their way of life. The owner’s wife had been a city gal from California and moving to the country was quite a change. After they moved into their home, she had a hard time getting use to being alone, as her home was surrounded by acres and acres of farmland and cattle. In fact, when she would drive into her garage, she immediately closed the door and then sat in her car until her fear subsided enough for her to go into the house. It took more than two years for the house to be built. Some of the original items are still visible. In the master bedroom, which is now the Bridal Suite, there is a stone wall made with stones that were brought in from Virginia. The owner’s garden view seen from a window in the master bedroom’s sitting area is now a view of the Bridal Suite’s private patio. The house also has two beautiful rock walls that were made with rocks from a river bottom in Mesa, and two cov-
ered f loor-to-ceiling fireplaces. One of the fireplaces is located in the family room. The other is located in what was once the formal dining room. It also has a large wood mantel that was made from a tree in northern California. Both locations are now sitting rooms where the bridal party and immediate family can relax. A WEDDING VENUE
Three years ago, Vickie Herd decided to take this property, once called Ashley Manor, and transform it into the Bella Rose Estate, a wedding venue. Herd selected the name in honor of her younger sister, Rosemary, who died in 1988 at the age of 24. Roses in many forms are strategically placed around the estate, keeping a bit of her sister’s memory with her. Herd also has family members who help her coordinate the many weddings and private events that are held at the Manor house. The Bella Rose staff includes her daughters, Leslie and Ashley; her son, Chad; her son-inlaw, Chad; and her parents, Mary Ann and Bud. “I am very blessed to be able to do what I love and work with my kids and parents every day.” Herd shares. As a previous small business owner with an entrepreneurial “can do” spirit, Herd, with her family, jumped into wedding planning business. Bella Rose averages three weddings a week as well as other events they plan. Those events may include birthdays, anniversaries, corporate functions, barbecues, bridal showers, charity events, school proms, Halloween and Christmas parties. The Manor house is available for both small and large events with the Bella Rose staff’s assistance. A MAGICAL PLACE
It took Herd more than 10 months to renovate the Manor house into a wonderful wedding venue for couples to use on their wedding day. All the furniture and accessories were brought in to create just the CONTINUED >

Designing Women of Arizona Floral School PLANTING SEEDS OF HOPE FOR A BRIGHTER TOMORROW ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GUERRERO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
H
ope blooms in the heart of Judy Taylor, the owner of Designing Women of Arizona, a thriving floral and event business in Chandler. She is preparing to open the doors to her floral school that will hold its first session this fall. According to Taylor’s research, it’s the only nonprofit floral school in the state. There are shops that teach floral design, but not the floral business. Taylor added a few special twists to her business plan. She’ll teach her students much more than flower arranging: she has a full curriculum that delves into all aspects of the floral business, including management, marketing, retail, buying and horticulture. And although her school is open to anyone interested in a career in the floral industry, she will provide scholarships to survivors of domestic violence, military veterans and the homeless. “Victims of domestic violence can find lodging for four months, but if they don’t have a job at the end of four months, they are going to end up in the same situation. If they don’t have a job, where’s their money going to come from?” says Taylor. Taylor was inspired to open the school for several reasons. One is because she wants to bring back quality into the flower industry, after witnessing an overall decline through
the years. But more i mpor ta nt ly, she felt it was her time to give back. She sold two full bridal shops and three successful floral
shops in California, then moved to Arizona with her 20 years of experience. She opened the Chandler shop in 2003. Taylor feels very fortunate for her accomplishments and wants to share that good feeling with others. “God's been good to me over the years. I’m the girl from the wrong side of the track and they didn’t expect me to go anywhere after high school. I like to share with young people that there is life after high school,” says Taylor. The floral school includes a retail front and students will have the opportunity to work in the store and on events to gain real world experience. It’s important to Taylor that her students have every opportunity to find a career in this field. She has even collaborated with other local businesses about partnering with her to help students find jobs after they have gone through her fivemonth training program. The students will need to get the jobs on their own steam, but she can help open doors. “You don’t have to be a floral artist, there are many jobs in the industry from owner, buyer, manager, importer, wholesaler, etcetera, and by working the retail side, students will also learn to have good healthy interaction with people. When you give a person flowers you can see the smile on their face. It just lightens up everything,” says Taylor. She recognizes that it’s not all about being a designer. Maybe someone has the skill set to manage a floral shop or nursery. Students will learn everything about this trade from the ground up. Classes are to be held Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The school provides students with all the supplies they need, including knives, scissors, a caddy, vases and two shirts per person. They will also receive a binder with educational materials, as well as real and silk flowers to hone their flower arranging skills. There will be between ten to 20 students to a class and students will rotate work stations so they get the opportunity
to pair up with different classmates. This is all part of the design, to teach students to work with different personalities and styles. Currently, they are fundraising for scholarships, and seeking qualified board members. They are also accepting donated vases and silk flowers for students to use. The five-month program costs $1500, which, according to Taylor’s research, is extremely affordable for the education offered. She does expect scholarship students to be responsible for $500 of the tuition, but is comfortable splitting that amount into payments. There are so many reasons Taylor is passionate about flowers. She sees flowers as a way to bring joy to both her clients and students. “We want everyone to be a part of the flower delivery process because people are so happy when they get them, they will even hug and kiss you, and possibly give gratuity,” says Taylor. “Flowers are peaceful, make people happy and help alleviate depression. They are always a positive thing, and they don’t intimidate. It’s amazing what they can do for someone,” says Taylor. Taylor has a great “can do” attitude. The day I called, she was swamped with a rush order of 10 arrangements for a patient at Scottsdale North. The giver wanted to make sure this friend, who’s battling cancer, was surrounded by flowers when she woke. They were also preparing for a Saturday event, and towards the end of the day they received a call from a parent anxious to get a couple of corsages for a father/daughter school dance.
“I can’t resist the kids. They came all the way from Maricopa for the corsages and still tried to tip us. We said no, but they insisted in donating it to the school,” says Taylor. “We try to do our best no matter what.” Taylor hopes to do much more than educate her students. She wants to do more than help them find a job. She wants to plant seeds of inspiration and hope in the hearts of her students so that they can grow strong roots, find joy in a job well done and learn to bask in the sun when it’s time to bloom. “And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” ~ Anais Nin Learn more about Designing Women of Arizona Floral School at DesigningWomenOfAZ.com or find them on Facebook at Designing Women of Arizona. Princess Bride PHOENIX BOUTIQUE CLEO AND CLEMENTINE MAKES WEDDING DRESS DREAMS COME TRUE ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY RACHEL HAWKINSON
E
very bride-to-be hopes to find the perfect dress for her special day. Monique Sandoval, owner of Phoenix’s Cleo and Clementine custom special occasion apparel boutique, hopes to help you turn those dreams into a reality. Located off of 7th Avenue in the Melrose District of central Phoenix, Cleo and Clementine hosts a variety of unique, handmade dresses, separates and accessories that she describes as “girly with an edge.” A majority of the designs are made by Sandoval, though she does also feature some accessories and jewelry from other local artists. The boutique is both immaculately styled with a feminine chic that stands out against a rustic contrast. But more importantly, it provides an instant feeling of home that makes it impossible not to fall in love with both Sandoval and the designs she has surrounded you with. The success of her line OUMA on Etsy inspired the opening of a physical storefront for Cleo and Clementine in 2012 to support 26

her increasing success and give her a workspace that made room for her expanding dreams and clientele that were growing far beyond the size of her previous studio space (also known as the Sandoval home garage). The boutique is filled with natural light that casts over racks of handmade prototypes, each boasting a unique personality but staying within the family of fun, flirty and exquisitely crafted. While the sample pieces can certainly be plucked from the rack and worn to your next event, Sandoval prides herself on the custom creations that her and her staff conceptualizes and creates as a manifestation of each bride’s individual style and vision for their day. When soon-to-be-brides come into Cleo and Clementine for an initial meeting, Sandoval works with them to determine what silhouettes they normally wear and are comfortable in. She asks questions and goes through “inspiration images.” The key, she explains, is to stay true to what works and not get caught up in mo-
mentary trends and find a common vision and understanding of what it will be. When she is working to lock down a look (either for a bride or for one of her prototype samples), Sandoval finds her fun in creating the bride’s story and exploring different designs. “I like to think ‘Who am I designing for?’” she explains. “I think of how I’m going to style the overall look, and what the emotion of the dress is. It’s important that it’s part of a bigger picture.” Brides who come to Cleo and Clementine will meet with Sandoval multiple times to ensure the design and fit is perfect. It’s the relationships that Sandoval builds with her clients that are her motivation for not going a wholesale or mass-production route. “No no, I can’t feel right about that,” she says with a slight shake of her head. “I want to personally make sure they are happy and the dress is perfect. The quality of the relationships is as important to me as the quality of the work we produce here.”

Which makes her personal involvement in the more than 500 dresses created within the walls of Cleo and Clementine so impressive. While someone else handles the technical execution of some of the designs and an apprentice assists them both as needed, Sandoval touches each of the dresses that bear the OUMA and Cleo and Clementine name and reputation. “Brides trust me to give them a great design,” she suggests, “and that means something to me. I want them to look and feel amazing. It doesn’t just have to be right, it has to be perfect. I have to make sure of that.” And with one look at any of the resulting dresses shows that perfection has truly been achieved, time and time again.

Parting Thoughts
A Nice Day for a White-Out Wedding! WORDS DENISE SNODELL
D
ream gown? Check. Persnickety florist? Check. Top-notch wedding planner? Check. Unexpected glitches? Check-Check-Check. I have attended and participated in many different weddings across the country. Every blessed event had one thing in common: some sort of unforeseen mishap. Amazingly, not one involved a wacky uncle + booze. To all future brides and grooms, “zillas” included, the only thing I can advise is to roll with the fiasco. With every marriage, your sense of humor is necessary icing on the multi-tiered cake. You may as well start laughing on day one. Here are some true-life wedding blunders from my own experiences… Years ago, a dear friend invited me to be her maid of honor. We lived in different cities. When I arrived days before the wedding, we noticed my pink taffeta frock endured travel wrinkles - despite my direct flight, oversized garment bag and careful packing. “No problem,” said the giggly bride, “I’ll have my dry cleaner press it!” The morning of the Sunday wedding, my friend realized she forgot to pick up the dress the evening before. The dry-cleaner was closed with the maid of honor’s gown locked inside! Luckily, her groom and his buddy were freshly-minted journalists. They quickly employed their investigative skills, tracked down the owner’s home number (via the fire department) and met the grumpy bed-headed man at the shop. Hours later, I began my promenade down the aisle. It was an outdoor wedding. The sky was blue. My gown was as smooth as a 34

rose petal. The guests had no idea what had happened! But they did notice when the heel of my left shoe got stuck between the garden bricks. Good times. Then there was the wedding of some friends in the broadcast industry. The bride had asked a talented videographer to tape her big day. He agreed, but privately grumbled to me her wedding was scheduled the same time his beloved football team was playing. He had never missed a game in his life. Ever! The videographer found a creative solution. Just before the wedding, he showed me the transistor radio in his suit pocket. The ear bud wires looked like video equipment. He was all grins until the church’s sound system somehow picked up the game’s frequency during the vows. Fumble! At my own wedding, my newly-minted brother-in-law “decorated” our getaway car with some beyond-PG-13 innuendos. No. “Innuendos” is too soft of a description for what was scrawled across the windshield. But I gave him a pass, probably due to what happened at his wedding a few years earlier. My future husband and I were a new item. I was keeping a low profile as “the girlfriend.” Shyness and some bad static cling will do that. So when it came time for the bride to toss the bouquet, I hid in the back of the room. Way back. Her throw was so wild, it surpassed the anxious “single ladies” in the front, went through the chandelier and literally fell into my arms. Sometimes, even the flubs can lead to wonderful things.
