Love Local

At this time of year, we begin to think about love, the color pink and the taste of chocolate. We’re torn between another “greeting card” holiday or a box of chocolates to embrace the sweet moments and excuses to truly savor the season.

Do we go out for a romantic Valentine’s Day date or enjoy a cozy night at home? Do we buy a card or simply offer a heartfelt word? We tend to land somewhere in between. The answers may differ based on individual preferences and personalities, but one thing we all share is the opportunity to remind those around us how much we love them. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month's magazine will inspire you to do just that, as we highlight all that’s worth celebrating in your local community.

As we find ourselves between the chill of winter and the anticipation of spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to connect with those who matter most— whether they’re under your roof, next door, or part of your larger community.

“Love local” is about supporting your neighborhood businesses, but it’s also about appreciating what’s near and dear—those within your own home, your friends, your neighbors. We cherish the memories of creating Valentine boxes for school, carefully addressing cards, and exchanging them before the class party. This year, perhaps you’ll design a Valentine box for your home or office and encourage everyone to hand out handmade valentines. It’s a simple way to spread love, one thoughtful gesture at a time.

We’ve always believed that what we can accomplish together far exceeds what we can do alone. This idea continues to be beautifully reflected in the many stories shared in this magazine month after month.

Thank you for allowing us to be a part of the life you’re creating, whatever that may look like. Our hope is that we inspire you to embrace it even more than you already do.

With love your favorite storytellers,

February 2025

Given that Susanne and Bill Owens restored a historic 1871 building into a boutique hotel just two blocks from the bicycle-inspired Katy Trail, and given that the French word vélo translates to "bicycle" or "bike" in English, it stands to reason that they christened the new destination spot as Le Vélo Inn.

The imaginative bike hotel in Frenchtown is already known as a journey through time, a celebration of the past, and a gateway to modern comfort. A grand opening was held at the Inn this past December. The property actually harkens back to its roots, given that it first served as the Short Boarding House/Saloon back in the day.

The Owens aren't originally from St. Charles, but indicated they started visiting the city during 2012 when one of their sons, Jakob, received a full scholarship at Lindenwood University. He attended Lindenwood from 2013-2017, and received a bachelor's degree in biochemistry.

"We fell in love with St. Charles immediately because of the history and eclectic Main Street, and vowed if we could ever invest in a multifamily property in St. Charles, that we would," recalls Susanne.

The couple ended up purchasing the building sight unseen. At the time, Bill was a train conductor for BNSF Railroad in Chicago. Susanne was working in Hannibal, Missouri, providing anesthesia as a certified registered nurse anesthetist/anesthesiologist.

Susanne says she called their realtor and placed a blind bid on the St. Charles property. "We ended up winning the foreclosure auction."

Bill retired from the railroad early during 2021 to handle the couple's real estate endeavors in St. Charles and Foley, Alabama. Susanne still travels two to three weeks a month to help fund the real estate projects, and Bill often travels with her while still handling decisions and ordering items for the building.

"Our inn seamlessly merges the allure of yesteryears with the convenience of today, inviting guests to relive the captivating era of the late 1800s and early 1900s," explains Bill.

Susanne adds: "As you step into Le Vélo Inn, you'll immediately sense the essence of a bygone era. The walls whisper tales of adventurers on their trusty bicycles and the echoes of other historic events that shaped the world. Every corner exudes modern nostalgia, paying homage to the golden age of cycling and the spirit of exploration."

“ WE ABSOLUTELY FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS PLACE. VERY WARM AND INVITING. THEY THOUGHT OF EVERYTHING. WE’LL DEFINITELY BE BACK.”

Located in St. Charles at 1425 N. 2nd St., there are eight, overnight rentals on the property, with each unit reflecting a bicycle that was invented and introduced in a short period of time before the car was invented. The suites are called The Penny Farthing, The Tri-Wheel, The Betty Bloomer, The Swiftwalker, The Velocipede and The Green Tyke.

"Our boutique hotel offers an intimate experience with a selection of thoughtfully designed suites. Choose from our inviting

accommodations, which include a cozy studio and five charming one-bedroom, onebath suites within the meticulously restored historic building. Each suite is a unique ode to the past, furnished with vintage-inspired pieces, antique accents and modern amenities that ensure a comfortable and memorable stay," explains Susanne.

Adding to the allure, according to Bill, are two recently renovated cottages, nestled behind the historic building: The Hub and The Quest. "These duplex cottages

provide an extra layer of privacy and versatility for guest stays."

He says the original building opened the same year the Penny-farthing high wheeler bicycle was invented.

Susanne says it was a joy to mix design and history to bring the building back to life. She adds it was a joy to working with the St. Peters-based Newberry Contracting Inc. owner Brad Wilson and designer Megan Wilson, who obtained all the furniture and designed all the suites.

"This project was an effort to give back to the community with a portion of the proceeds from the building being donated to charity," she says.

For those desiring to reserve all eight Le Vélo Inn suites in the historic building and both cottages along with the private courtyard for special events, intimate celebrations or micro weddings, a total of 26 guests can be accommodated. Susanne says several local restaurants cater to their location, including La Belle Vie located just a few blocks away.

"We love to customize events and make guests' visions come to life," she adds.

Whether guests seek solitude, romance or connection, the Owens indicate they're more than ready to oblige.

ADVICE EDITORIAL: PROPOSAL LOCATION INSPIRATION

If 2025 is the year to start forever plans with your partner, a unique location at which to ask the big question may be in order. You might have a special spot already that symbolizes a pivotal moment in your relationship. But if nothing comes to mind or you’re looking for a stunning location for photos, there are plenty of breathtaking backdrops in St. Louis. If being out in the open isn’t your favorite idea, ask personally at home with an intimate, romantic setup and head to any of these spots afterward to make the celebration a day of memories.

ROMANTIC RESTAURANT

If a dim and cozy restaurant setting is in mind, consider Brasserie in Central West End. The French bistro vibe is reminiscent of Paris, the ‘City of Love.’ In colder weather inside candlelit dining is romantic and intimate, and in warmer temperatures patio tables under lights feel whimsical and European. Plus, a fancy bottle of champagne can accompany your special meal.  01

MISSOURI BOTANICAL GARDEN

Spring at the MoBot is magical! Wait for peak cherry blossom timing and head to the Japanese Garden in the back of the park. The trees flower with amazing pinks and whites, perfectly fitting for a wedding theme. If your partner is a flower enthusiast or has mentioned a ceremony at this location, this is a fun way to kick off planning.

Grab a picnic basket and look for the colorful tulips blooming this spring at the Jewel Box. This iconic spot is usually quiet, and has plenty of spots to areas a spring day to pop the question. This spot is very dog-friendly if you have a four-legged friend that wants to take part in the special occasion.

02

FOREST PARK ART HILL

For a stunning viewpoint, walk along the paths atop Art Hill, overlooking the Basin. This scenic spot is enjoyable in any weather, and also makes a great setting for post-proposal photos if you’re hiring a photographer to meet you there. In the summer, wildflowers bloom near the King Louis statue and in the fall, the iconic red trees line the rim of the path.

‘REO Speedwagon Is Over’ — NOT!

REO’s Original Singer, Local Drummer And Bandmates Released  ‘REO Classics Red Vinyl Album,’ Plus 2025 Touring

Still ridin' the storm out.

When REO Speedwagon band members announced they will not tour in 2025, the band's original lead singer from 1968-1972, Terry Lutrell, took up the banner and announced he'd keep the legacy alive via touring as the REO Classics Band. The new initiative features Terry with Michael Mesey, longtime drummer for rock and roll pioneer St. Louis-native Chuck Berry, as well as EastCentral Illinois-born band Head East.

Michael, a St. Peters resident and powerhouse drummer of 45 years, also produced and played drums on movie soundtracks featuring Michael McDonald, Johnnie Johnson and David Sanborn. He's known for adding solid rhythm that fuels a band's explosive energy. In fact, he was featured in Brazil last July for World Rock Day on a podcast discussing new song releases and his experiences playing with Chuck Berry.

"On tour, we'll perform all the great REO classic rock songs that fans still want to hear live," Michael and Terry assure.

Original REO band members hailed from Champaign, Illinois, forming in 1967, starting and leaving an indelible mark on the fabric of rock 'n' roll.

Now joining Michael and Terry are Mike Baue, Greg Shute and Will Polazzo to tour regarding what they call "The Early Days," the greatness of REO Speedwagon's impactful, 1970s album-oriented rock music.

Michael says the REO Classics Band's debut album was recorded and mixed in St. Louis at Shock City Studios and mastered at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London. He went to the London studio to work with mastering engineer Sean Magee, who also cut and mastered the lacquers for vinyl pressing. As a veteran engineer, Sean stated: "It's rock and roll. We need rock and roll!"

Longtime fans can now hear "157 Riverside Avenue." This explosive seven-track debut album features other raucous classics from R.E.O. Speedwagon's self-titled debut: "Anti-Establishment Man" and "Sophisticated Lady;" the hard chugging blues/rocker "Golden Country" from the second album R.E.O./T.W.O "Riding the Storm Out" and "Son of a Poor Man," from the third album Ridin' The Storm Out  and "Roll With The Changes," from You Can Tune A Piano, But You Can't Tuna Fish.

Rewriting rules of the music game, REO Speedwagon's music was said to have redefined what it meant to rock, given their groundbreaking fusion of

hard-hitting anthems and heartfelt ballads. Their debut album reportedly not only captivated audiences worldwide but also inspired countless artists to push boundaries of creativity and self-expression.

One current Classics fan, Brandon Gehrig, posted online about the new album: "It’s really great!!! It's def got that older REO vibe. Def a must get!!!"

An after-party "limited edition red vinyl album" release party was held in St. Peters at Diamond Music Hall on Dec. 14, resulting in what the band members called "a rock show full tilt." They played, then signed and sold albums and CDs. The album was previously released only on CD, digital downloads and streaming formats.

This new REO Classics music package is available from sources such as Amazon, Tower Records, Vintage Vinyl and Collectors Choice. Now, fans get to "Keep On Lovin'" this iconic music!

Fun fact: REO stands for Ransom Eli Olds, founder of the REO Motor Car Company in 1904. The company built trucks until 1967; a picture of its 1929 truck became the band's first album cover.

Meet An Artist With Love For Creating Colorful, Eye-Catching Artwork

After a decade-long career in business and finance, Jessica Hitchcock decided to jump full time into her previously part-time career of art. Now, since 2019, she's excelled in creating artwork that inspires clients and their spaces, while also helping other artists create sustainable art businesses of their own.

"There’s something special about working with designers and collectors to bring ideas to life and create something so unique. My goal is to take what you have in mind and translate that vision onto canvas, all while providing a seamless, enjoyable experience. It's an exciting process I truly enjoy," the St. Charles resident explains.

Jessica creates paintings in collections available through her website, and also creates custom commissions. She says her artwork is installed in corporate offices, health facilities and boutique hotels, along with private collections throughout seven countries: Italy, The Netherlands, Mexico, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and the United States.

"Using my business background, I also coach artists through 1:1 mentorship," she explains. "Each artist is unique: their art, talents and personalities are all distinct. I love learning about their goals, dreams, strengths and challenges. Guiding them toward understanding and taking control of their finances empowers them to build sustainable, thriving careers. Seeing their growth, both artistically and professionally, and playing a part in helping them reach their potential is truly fulfilling."

Jessica says she started creating boldly colorful paintings in 2015, first more as a hobby. Now her flourishing art business also hosts a monthly newsletter and YouTube channel.

She says her objectives for 2025 are to embrace simplicity and focus on meaningful projects. She plans to take time developing a new collection of abstract faces. "This concept has been in my mind for over three years, but it was often set aside due to client work, commissions and demands of being a full-time stay-athome mom to my two little kids. This collection will have no deadlines or pressure; I want it to evolve naturally, allowing the creative process to guide its development."

"Life has taught me that we constantly evolve, shedding old identities and creating new ones," she adds. "Transformation is a powerful and inspiring part of life."

HOW A HEART-SHAPED BOX OF CHOCOLATE BECAME ULTIMATE SIGN OF LOVE ON VALENTINE’S DAY

NOTHING SAYS LOVE LIKE CHOCOLATE

Chocolate. The very word elicits a sense of euphoria. The smooth, rich creaminess of the perennially-favorite confection continues to capture hearts and taste buds every Valentine’s Day. But why does chocolate have the hold that it does? The answer is more nuanced than simply “it tastes good,” otherwise, people would delight each other with heart-shaped boxes of spaghetti or fried chicken every Feb. 14.

Though alternatives exist to show romantic love to one another, chocolate remains America’s favorite.

Once reserved for the wealthy due to the high price of sugar, chocolate became synonymous with Valentine’s Day gift-giving only within the last 200 years. Borne of the romance of the Victorian era, British chocolatier Richard Cadbury was the first to place chocolates in a heart-shaped box, intended to be reused after the chocolate was depleted to store love notes or small trinkets.

In the 1930s, marketing of Valentine’s Day chocolate took off in America, and women became the focus of Valentine’s Day gift-giving. By the 1960s, men no longer appeared in ads for Valentine’s Day; instead, all America needed to know to promote the holiday was that chocolate was the surest way to a woman’s heart.

America’s Cupid crush on the ever-popular, heart-shaped boxes of chocolate continued to grow until World War II, when sugar rations forced a decline in chocolate making.

Since then, however, chocolate has continued to be a worldwide favorite on Valentine’s Day and every other day of the year. Now, consumers enjoy numerous local and international options for chocolatiers that produce the exact combinations

“Chocolate. The very word elicits a sense of euphoria.”

of chocolate and other flavors to satisfy a sweet tooth. From minimalist, solid milk chocolate to luxury combinations with pistachio paste, it’s become as simple as “add to cart” to show a favorite Valentine that we care.

Celebrate this year with a visit to a local chocolatier.

WIMZY WALLS

‘This Ain’t Your Grandma’s Wallpaper’

“This ain’t your grandma’s wallpaper.”

Though the Chinese are said to have invented wallpaper by pasting rice papers to walls as far back as the Qin dynasty, most of us are more likely to think of the little ducks or flowered patterns on our grandmothers’ bathroom and kitchen walls.

“With our peel-and-stick wallpapers, you can peel them right off and not worry about damaging your walls.”
~Veronica Schwab

This isn’t that.

Veronica Schwab and her husband started their custom vinyl wrap company, Cool Touch Graphics, 15 years ago, creating vehicle graphics, banners and signs, as well as window tinting. A trivia night at their son’s school about a year ago got Veronica thinking about what she could donate. And that eventually led them to create their sister company, Wimzy Walls.

“I started thinking about wall wraps,” Veronica says. “Wallpaper has made such a comeback.”

Wimzy Walls now not only showcases their own designs, but collaborates with artists across the world. “With a growing popularity in peel-and-stick wallpaper and our experienced team of designers and printers, it was a perfect time to grow into the interior decorating space,” Veronica says.

In the past, installing wallpaper meant thoroughly preparing the walls, measuring and cutting the wallpaper to size, applying wallpaper paste to the back of the paper, carefully aligning and hanging each strip on the wall, smoothing out any bubbles with a roller or squeegee, and then trimming excess paper at the edges for a clean finish. “The traditional paste method was such a nightmare,” Veronica says. “People got sick of it. Now it’s trendier. People are now going with a little more design in their spaces, and this is a fast way to make a big statement. You can do an accent wall or put wallpaper on the ceiling. We are seeing people starting to wallpaper their appliances—refrigerators and dishwashers. And as far as style goes, art nouveau is making a big comeback.”

Wimzy Walls wallpaper is removable and repositionable. There is no residue left behind after removal. “With our peel-andstick wallpapers, you can peel them right off and not worry about damaging your walls,” Veronica says.

The polyester fiber is wipeable: ideal for high traffic areas. It doesn’t shrink, peel or curl. It’s easy to install on any smooth, non-porous surface; and it’s safe and non-toxic: free of the synthetic plastic polyvinyl chloride or PVC, lead and phthalates, or the chemicals that make plastic soft and flexible.

“The fun thing is, we have so many styles available whether your style is stripes, geometric, floral or animal patterns, there are so many styles to choose from,” Veronica says. Customers can choose from patterns available on the company’s website or, at an added cost, customize their own with artists from Cool Touch Graphics.

Wimzy Walls does local installation, and is currently building a nationwide network for customers who don’t live in the area. But many people decide to install their own. The wallpapers come with directions and a smoothing tool or squeegee, and tutorials are provided on the company’s website.

In fact, Veronica says she has never had anyone call and say they couldn’t do it. “It’s doable,” she said. “It takes some time and patience, but it’s doable like any DIY project.”

Wimzy Walls sells its papers in two-footwide panels. “Customers measure their walls, and we send panels that line up as opposed to rolls that you had to line up yourself,” Veronica says. “So, there is not a ton of excess waste.”

The website offers a calculator for pricing, and everything is $4 per square foot.

FROM RELAXATION TO SHOPPING TO GOLF TO SIGHTSEEING, THIS DESTINATION HAS IT ALL

THE SCOTTSDALE LURE OF

The endless skies of blue are interrupted only by cacti rising majestically from the ground, arms reaching skyward, and palm trees, which are often adorned by lights that twinkle when the sun sets. There are vistas of open desert, rising mountains, and even the lush green of the locale’s many golf courses. And, of course, there are the vibrant shopping, dining, art, and event scenes, too.

Scottsdale is a city located in Metro Phoenix in Arizona, which as a whole is nicknamed “The Valley of the Sun” for its more than 330 days of sun each year—one of the reasons the area is a draw for visitors. With few rainy days, it’s easy to plan your daily activities without worry. Yes, though, the summer gets hot. But the rest of the year? Perfection.

Scottsdale is a mix of a resort destination, city, and suburbs, with more open desert the further north you venture. To the south is Downtown Scottsdale —also known as Old Town

Scottsdale—which is a mix of old Southwestern charm (including the legendary cowboy saloon, Rusty Spur Saloon); modern eateries from famed chefs; lots of shopping at small boutiques and specialty shops; the Arts District , which is filled with art galleries; and even tasting rooms from Arizona wineries located along the famed Scottsdale Wine Trail

Nearby is Scottsdale Fashion Square, one of the nation’s premier shopping destinations. While you’ll find many usual retailers there, there are also more than 40 luxury brands, including Christian Louboutin, Bottega Veneta, and Louis Vuitton.

Heading north are open-air shopping destinations Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland Commons , which sit across the street from each other. Take the afternoon or evening to stroll through, exploring the shops, restaurants, and activity destinations such as the indoor minigolf destination Puttshack . What else is there to see and do? Plenty.

“WITH FEW RAINY DAYS, IT’S EASY TO PLAN YOUR DAILY ACTIVITIES WITHOUT WORRY. YES, THOUGH, THE SUMMER GETS HOT. BUT THE REST OF THE YEAR? PERFECTION.”

PLAY

Like golf? There are more than 200 golf courses in the Scottsdale area. Whether you’re a pro or just starting out, there is a course for you. One of the most popular in the area is the TPC Scottsdale as it is the locale of the WM Phoenix Open, the most-attended golf tournament in the world.

For most of the year, Scottsdale boasts warm temperatures, making spending a day splashing in a pool a perfect choice. Many local resorts have pool areas that feature fun extras such as water slides, lazy rivers, and even a cooled sand beach. And even if you’re not an on-site guest, you can often purchase a day pass to be on-site through ResortPass.com.

Of course, there’s also plenty of outdoor recreation in Scottsdale. Pinnacle Peak in North Scottsdale is a popular mountain to hike (as is the iconic Camelback Mountain, which is located in nearby Phoenix), and the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt is a park and trail system spread over 11 miles. Kids love McCormickStillman Railroad Park , which boasts a small-scale train that circles the park and plenty of play areas.

A destination filled with numerous attractions is A rizona Boardwalk , a center that includes Butterfly Wonderland , OdySea Aquarium , Ripley’s Believe It or Not! , Museum of Illusions , and more.

CULTURE

The beauty of Scottsdale’s Sonoran Desert led famed architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), to build Taliesin West , his winter home and desert laboratory, in a mountainside in East Scottsdale. Today, there are daily tours of the UNESCO World Heritage site, and events are offered often.

However, Wright’s architecture isn’t the only art in the area. Beyond the Arts District in Downtown Scottsdale, there is public art all around the city, from sculptures to murals, so definitely keep your eyes open!

There are also museums such as Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West , a Smithsonian Affiliate, which showcases items from the Greater Western region, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art , affectionately known as SMoCA.

On Thursday evenings, there’s a free public ArtWalk in the Arts District, where galleries stay open later. Wander the streets and galleries, often against a backdrop of live music and even artist appearances.

DINING AND NIGHTLIFE

From mom-and-pop restaurants to those run by James Beard Award-winning chefs and celebrity chefs, Scottsdale has it all. NEARBY

While there’s so much to do, see, and experience in Scottsdale proper, there’s also much to see nearby. Make sure to experience the Musical Instrument Museum (affectionately known as the MIM), which is the world’s only global instrument museum. Desert Botanical Garden features an array of desert plants, and Phoenix Art Museum has an impressive collection of art.
