Editor’s Letter It’s February and “Love is in the Air.” Sometimes this month can seem a little dreary but the excitement of a day dedicated to love always seems to lift the spirit. In this “Love” issue, there are several stories that will get you prepared to say those special words to your loved one on Valentine’s Day this year. Hopefully you are saying those words to someone everyday, but on this one special day it’s nice to say it sometimes in different ways. One of our features this month is all about the love story of a couple that has been together for many decades. Their inspirational story about love and marriage is sure to tug at your heartstrings. Having only been married to my husband for just over two years, their story reassures me that we will last a lifetime. Maybe before that romantic night on the town, you and your family can curl up on the couch to cheer on team U.S.A. in this year’s 2014 Winter Olympics held in Sochi, Russia. All of these exciting events can make spending time with your loved ones a special memory. These athletes have worked hard to prepare for this dream of getting the gold medal. Who will come out on top? Read about the Girl Scout Cookie Dessert Challenge. There were 12 chefs selected to put their love and hearts on the line as they create delectable desserts inspired by the different flavors of Girl Scout cookies. The winner will be decided based on the amount of sales of the dessert. They will also be judged on taste, creativity, and appearance. A proceed of the sales will be given to benefit the Girl Scouts. Sounds like a delicious charity event to me! You will get another idea from reading our Locally Owned column this month. Featuring the famous See’s Candies, this article will make your mouth water. We talk about the best selling chocolates, the history of the business, and the traditions that are still in practice today. Anthology Poetry’s Tiny Mesa Poetry Slam Since 1994, Anthology has been going strong. The literary nonprofit is dedicated to promoting performance poetry and providing opportunities for artists to perform their work. This Tiny Slam includes The 60 Second Haiku Deathmatch and the “exquisite corpse” style poem created by passing a notepad around for audience members to contribute. Craft Hack Craft Hack is the co-working meet-up where new and experienced crafters support each other’s creations. ost of us in America are well familiar with the famous See’s Candies. This candy shop often times comes to mind around Valentine’s Day when thousands of heart shaped boxes full of chocolate are bought and given to loved ones. It’s quite amazing how this once-little shop became so well known in America today. Charles See, founder of the first See’s Candies shop, arrived to the United States in 1921 from Canada along with his wife, Florence, and his mother Mary See. After trying his hand in the confection business, Charles See decided that the business would be best represented by the image of his own mother. Later that year in November, the first See’s Candies shop was opened on Western Avenue in Los Angeles. The dazzling black and white shop was created to resemble Mary See’s home kitchen. Just one year later the Sees sold the company to Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Chairman Warren Buffett presided over it along with Vice Chairman Charles Munger. Over the years, there have been several “favorites” when it comes to the deliciously rich and creamy chocolates. oe and Anissa Pongratz always knew they wanted a big family. So it wasn’t a big surprise to friends when they announced their fourth baby was on the way in late 2011. The Chandler couple was excited to give their sons, Nick and Nate, and daughter, Ava, a new sibling. A few weeks later they learned Anissa had miscarried. “We were heartbroken,” says Anissa. “We tried to conceive for an entire year following the miscarriage but it didn’t happen.” Decision to adopt

Before the Pongratzs married in 2004, they had discussed their mutual desire to adopt. It wasn’t until they came to the realization that natural conception was no longer an option that they began more diligently researching foster care and adoption. “We initially wanted to do local foster or adoption, but that led to an interest in international and domestic private adoption, and then back to fostering or adopting in Arizona,” Anissa says. “I was completely confused about which path to take. I finally gave up and left it in God’s hands.” For months the couple did extensive research, including learning about adoption from China, Russia and Bulgaria. They read blogs and talked to other couples about foster care and adoption. When they 16 Chandler Lifestyle | February 2014

decided to pursue local foster and adoption, they ultimately selected Catholic Charities as their licensing agency. They completed the necessary classes, paperwork, background checks and interviews, and became licensed to adopt in the state of Arizona last June. “We were shocked to learn that there are 14,000 children in foster care in Arizona alone,” Anissa says. “These kids don’t deserve to be neglected or abused. They need loving and nurturing homes.” Two unforeseen gifts

It was an unexpected sign one morning when a preschool mom asked Anissa if she knew of anyone interested in adoption. “I put my hand up in the air with a laugh,” Anissa says. “She had no idea we were considering adoption.” Anissa learned about two boys, Anthony, 4, and Victor, 3, who were in the custody of their aunt. Several challenges had recently left the woman unable to care for the boys. Anissa planned a visit to meet the boys. She was immediately drawn to the sweet demeanor of the brothers, only 10 months apart. She also quickly noticed that Victor wasn’t walking correctly. As an experienced physical therapist, Anissa knew something wasn’t right. “I asked what was wrong with his leg or foot,” Anissa says. “I went over to him, took off his shoes and socks and saw the burn.” At 18-months, Victor suffered a burn on his feet so severe he lost the majority of the skin that protects the bone and had trouble walking. Anissa began gently examining his feet while she asked questions.

She explained that her husband, a prosthetist/orthotist, specialized in burns. Joe works closely with physicians and staff at Arizona Burn Center at Maricopa Medical Center and has developed many close relationships over time. She wanted Victor evaluated and was interested in exploring surgery options. In talking with the custodial guardian, Anissa also learned of some family connections that stemmed back many years, tying the families together. “I realized it was meant to be,” Anissa says. “There was no turning back.” In August, a judge granted Joe and Anissa the legal foster parents of Anthony and Victor. The boys are now eligible for adoption. The Pongratzs are patiently waiting for the paperwork to be cleared through the court to finalize the adoption.

3, and Victor, 3. “It is total crazy chaotic,” says Anissa. “It’s like we run a daycare. Whenever we go out, we all know to hold hands and stay together.” Opening their hearts

Bringing the boys home

Nick, Nate and Ava have all welcomed Anthony and Victor with open arms. While there have been some normal adjustments and typical every day arguments over toys, the children have embraced the boys. “I am really impressed at how well the kids adapted to one another so quickly,” Joe says. “It’s very inspiring to see how well the kids took to the boys as their brothers. They look out for each other.” Joe and Anissa say that while things are often busy at their home, they are all having a lot of fun with Nick, 7, Nate, 5, Anthony, 4, Ava,

The Pongratzs say they have become accustomed to their life as a family of seven, which even includes a recent purchase of a new van. “Taking care of five isn’t that much harder than taking care of three,” Joe said. “You just pour two more glasses of milk, and make two more peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.” Joe and Anissa say that Anthony and Victor are adorable, sweet children who have brought so much joy and love to their family. “We hope to give them an opportunity that they may not have had.” If you are interested in learning more about foster or adoption, visit AZDes.gov/ AS_Adoption.

t was 1943. She was sitting alone in a movie theatre when she first noticed him. At only 12, she knew there was something special about him. When he finally asked her on a date three years later, she was certain he was the one. On February 4, Bert and Laverne Johanson celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. However, the Chandler couple doesn’t wait to do something special once a year. Instead, they go out for a meal, see a movie or just make a point to spend quality time together on the fourth day of every month. It’s a tradition they started when they were first married.

A blossoming marriage

While it was love at first site for the Johansons, they have grown closer and have developed a more profound love over time. “Of course we loved each other when we got married, but I love him more now,” says Laverne. “It’s a deeper love.” Bert and Laverne raised their family in Round Lake, Ill. Bert had a career in the purchasing industry and Laverne stayed home to 18 Chandler Lifestyle | February 2014

raise their four children. At the time, the couple didn’t have extra money to plan elaborate vacations or dine at the finest restaurants in town, but they still managed to plan small celebrations on the fourth of every month. In 1991, Bert retired and the couple moved to Chandler to be closer to family. Trying times

Like most couples, the two disagreed on occasion, but there wasn’t much arguing in the Johanson home. In 1995, they lost their daughter which proved to be challenging to the marriage. “I would say that losing our daughter was the most trying time,” Laverne says. “It was extremely difficult for both of us.” The couple survived the greatest loss of their lives together. They say marriage is a commitment and something you work on. “You do things for your mate to make him happy, because it comes back to benefit you,” Laverne said.

Everlasting love

The Johansons enjoy spending every minute together, doing simple things like taking a nap or watching television, but they also take pleasure in sharing their love with their family. The couple has renewed their wedding vows a number of times through their church, including their 50th anniversary which was celebrated with their entire family on a Hawaiian cruise. Staying active

They definitely don’t let their age slow them down. At 85, Bert calls bingo on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Chandler Senior Center. Laverne, 82, collects the bingo cards and also plays at a casino on Fridays. They exercise together twice a week, take care of errands, and spend time with their family, which includes 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. They still travel and are considering another cruise in the spring. Advice for a happy marriage

The Johansons say they are shocked when they go out to dinner and see couples engrossed in smart phones, and other electronic devices. “People don’t know how to hold normal conversations anymore,” Bert said. “Put the phone down and talk to your spouse at dinner. When we were newly married there were no outside distractions,

there wasn’t television. It was just us, so simple, and we had fun.” The Johansons also say that there should be open communication and no secrets. They are firm believers that couples shouldn’t go to bed mad. The couple says their secret is simple: Don’t wait an entire year to celebrate your anniversary. It’s a special day that deserves recognition every month. And in this love story, it’s the key to their happily ever after.

Go Team U.S.A.! Sochi hosts the XXII Winter Olympics

t is so exciting that every four years the Olympic games return. We spectators love to marvel at the talents and abilities of the world’s greatest athletes. With more than 200 countries participating, these athletes are sure to bring their A game with only one goal in mind: Getting the gold medal. This year the winter Olympics will be hosted in Sochi, Russia. From February 7-23, it’s time to once again shout, “Go Team U.S.A.!” The Olympic games have quite a history. The creation of the games was inspired by the old, ancient games that were held in Olympia, Greece, from the eighth century B.C. to the fourth century A.D. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was established and founded in 1894 by Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The IOC could be described as the government for the Olympic games. They decide on the host city, the rules and the guidelines to keep the games running fair and smooth. Sochi itself is home to around 400,000 people, making it Russia’s largest resort city. It is located in Krasnodar, the third largest region in Russia, and spreads along 90 miles of the Black Sea coast shoreline. Sochi is one of few cities in Russia that has warm to hot summers and mild winters in its subtropical climate category. The Sochi games will be divided into two groups, otherwise known as clusters. One group will be called the coastal cluster, which is where the ice events will happen. The other group will be

the mountain cluster, which will be where the skiing and sliding sports will all take place. With only about 30 minutes travel time between the clusters, these games take on a compact concept. The winter games in Sochi will hold events in 15 disciplines of 7 different winter sports, including biathlon, bobsleigh, skeleton,

curling, ice hockey, luge, figure skating, short track speed skating,

gets up on that podium for the gold medal. I think, for me at least, there is this sense of American pride that hits me. It has to be what the athletes feel as well. The national anthem plays, the flag is raised, and often times tears begin to flow down their cheeks as their smile beams from ear to ear. It is such a great way for America to be represented. February can typically be a dreary month around the country. Winter is often times rearing its ugly head and the chilly temperatures keep a lot of people locked inside until the warmer weather arrives. Therefore, the Sochi Winter Olympics couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t come at a better time. It is a great way to bond with family members and friends over an Olympic party or even just a simple get together. After watching the Olympics together, you might all decide to try out your own talents on the slopes and schedule a family ski trip. Whether your favorite sport be the luge, skiing, snowboarding or ice skating, athletes from around the world will show off their stuff to compete for the gold. Be sure to gather around to cheer on your favorite athletes.

speed skating, alpine skiing, cross country skiing, Nordic combined skiing, ski jumping, freestyle skiing and snowboarding. All of these sports are exciting to watch as the athletes show off lifetime achievements. One of my personal favorite winter sports to watch during the games is figure skating. As I child, figure skating was a huge part of my life. I went to competitions almost every weekend. I would wake up at four in the morning to get to the rink before school started, and I came to understand the kind of commitment a sport like this takes to master. Around the age of ten I decided that it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the sport for me anymore. Looking back on my time as a figure skater, it taught me a lot of valuable things that I still reflect on today. I can only slightly appreciate the amount of time and commitment that all of these athletes put into their sports. Another one of my favorite sports to watch is the ski jumping. Those skiers just fly! It is hard for me to comprehend even trying that for the first time. I am sure there was a little bit of fear involved for these athletes when they were first getting started. During the games though it just looks like they are having the time of their lives. I love to watch the individual sports of course, but I think my favorite part of the Olympics is when someone from Team U.S.A. February 2014 | Chandler Lifestyle 21

ver dreamed of etching your own personalized beer mugs just for fun? How about powder-coating a vintage metal chair to perk up the back patio? Or, what about going into business for yourself and manufacturing something, be it gears or saddles? Walk into TechShop in downtown Chandler and you’ll walk out inspired by all the things you can do and never thought you could – like use a metal lathe, a 3D printer or an enormous water jet capable of cutting through six inches of solid steel. Whether you’re a novice or a skilled artisan in the world of industrial arts, an inventor, an entrepreneur, a retiree who wants to make handmade holiday gifts or a family interested in learning some basic skills, TechShop’s plethora of tools, licensed software and space to spread out and work will stir the creative urges in just about any soul. “I see people walking through here, and the guys are all drooling,” quipped John Resler of Tempe, a founding member of the 18,000 square-foot studio. After all, on the premises of this city building leased by the ASU Chandler Innovation Center (and subleased to TechShop), you’ll find, among other things: • three lasers • three 3D printers and a 3D scanner • an electronics lab, for activities like soldering and microchip board building • a textiles area, featuring three industrial sewing machines (capable of sewing leather), a quilting machine, an embroidery machine, a vinyl cutter and a silk-screening machine 22 Chandler Lifestyle | February 2014

• a machine shop, featuring a metal cutter, a metal mill, metal lathes • a woodshop • a “hot shop,” with welders, a pipe bender, shears, an iron worker, a cold saw • and two finishing rooms, one with a sandblasting cabinet and buffing machine and another with a spray booth, a powder coating booth and two ovens • a $300,000 CNC industrial water jet On a more serious note, the former Air Force pilot and software engineer – who said he once wrote programs for the very type of CNC (Computer Numerical Control, referring to a machining tool that converts a design into numbers) machine he now frequently uses in the studio’s woodshop – noted that TechShop has the potential to be a real game changer on all kinds of economic levels. “If you learn how to use one of the machines, and you put this in your garage, you’re in manufacturing,” he said. “With access to the Internet, access to a CAD (computer-aided design) drawing, you’re 90 percent of the way there.” That’s certainly one possible outcome of being involved with TechShop, said general manager Jon Barbara, and he and the other staffers are happy to lend support where needed, including helping someone get in touch with a patent office. “Our hope is that you become ‘too big’ for us and you have to move on,” he said. But TechShop is just as equally aimed at helping smaller-scale

operations, Barbara added, like a home-based seamstress or a backyard tinkerer. Basic use and safety classes required to use the machinery are offered, in addition to other types of instructional classes, all of which run about $55 to $160. And while you don’t need to be a member to take classes, you do need a membership to use TechShop’s machinery; there are also some minimum-age requirements, but children 12-17 can typically work under the supervision of an adult or legal guardian if they are included in the membership. A variety of price points and discounts are available, and Barbara said most folks opt for the $125 monthly recurring membership, which costs students just $95. Tiffani Mascarella, one of the studio’s “Dream Consultants” – instructors who earn the special moniker for their ability to help turn members’ technical dreams into realities – teaches Tig (which requires “more skill”) and Mig (which is “more automatic”) welding to students who range in age from 14 to their 70s. She said she learned her craft from her grandparents and went to school to learn the profession, but never really thought “there would be a good job for this.” She’s been pleased to learn otherwise. In fact, TechShop, which had its grand opening in January, already has signed on more than 100 members. And Barbara, who said the Chandler location is the seventh such studio of its kind in the nation, the first having opened in Menlo Park, Calif., in 2006, added that growth is certainly on the horizon. “We have 15 people on staff now,” he said, “and we plan to double that by the end of 2014.”

new great gym has opened up in Chandler. Funktional Fitness is a place where the trainers are passionate about helping you be a healthier you. In 2002, Luis Galindo and Jeremy Jones were hired on at 24 Hour Fitness within one week of each other. The two did not know each other before but their friendship flourished immediately when the company sent them to a weeklong training program. Little did they know the impact this week would have on their future. Over the next six years Luis and Jeremy mentored hundreds of clients and accumulated over 10,000 hours of training. Personal training in this big box environment provided each of them with numerous experiences helping their clients achieve their fitness goals, overcome injuries, eliminate medications, strengthen their bones, hearts, and lungs, as well as working with an array of different individuals both in the younger and older generations. All of these experiences, combined with the emotional and mental thoughts and feelings that are tied to working with others, provided a solid foundation to both of their training careers. In early 2008 they began putting all of their ideas and plans on to paper and formed a business partnership that continues to grow stronger each and every day. These ideas and due diligence led to Funktional Fitness being founded and doors open for business on October 4th, 2008 in downtown Gilbert. Most recently they opened up their second location in Chandler on November 4th, 2013. The philosophy behind Funktional Fitness is fueled by the same passion that Luis and Jeremy share. The training style mimics life’s everyday movements. Their focus is on the QUALITY of movements, not how many you can do in a set amount of time. All of the programs encompass strength, endurance, mobility, and nutrition. Jeremy and Luis believe that improving in all four of these categories leads to a healthier you. “We keep customers coming back by continuing to provide WOW and delivering results,” says Jeremy, “We are very innovative and always looking for ways to improve our member’s experience. Recently we began utilizing the Functional Movement Screen for every individual who first enrolls at FunkFit. This screen depicts imbalances and areas throughout movement patterns that need to be

improved in order to reduce any chances of injury. A healthy, injury free member continues to train because of the results they see.” Funktional Fitness offers fundamental training (private 1:1), personal training (small group 2-4), and GroupFit training (groups of 5-16) classes. All of these programs focus on our 4 concepts mentioned above. “In January we rolled out our Nutrition Fundamentals Support System,” said Jeremy. This is an online support system geared to help everyone eat better by becoming more educated about foods and preparation. Weekly menus are included, as well as online support and guidance. This program is for both members and non-members. Luis and Jeremy’s expectations for their employees are to deliver their top 2 products: customer service and results. hat comes to mind when hearing the words Thin Mints? Do you think of a thin chocolate-peppermint cookie that’s coated in chocolate with just the right amount of crunch? The first four words that come to my mind are Girl Scout cookie season, and this year, the Girl Scouts have come up with a new way for cookie aficionados, like myself, to indulge. The gauntlet has been thrown down and twelve chefs from around the Valley are competing in the inaugural Girl Scout Cookie Dessert Challenge. In a blind choosing, the chefs drew their cookie and will design a dessert utilizing the tasty treat. The cookies chosen for the desserts include Tagalongs, Do-SiDos, Samoas, Trefoils, Savannah Smiles, and my personal favorite, Thin Mints. Then during the month of February, the dessert will be added to their restaurant’s menu and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Girl Scouts. The winner of the competition will be based on several factors such as number of desserts sold. Several lucky Girl Scounts will judge the desserts in a taste test to determine the most creative and the most delicious. Chef Charles Osteen from CHoP Chandler was inspired to help with the fundraiser because he has two daughters who are members of the Girl Scouts and felt like it was a natural thing to do. He’s seen how the program has benefited his daughters. “My oldest daughter really connects with the girls in the group and enjoys the leadership aspect,” says Osteen. “Both of my girls were so excited about the competition and have lots of pride 28 Chandler Lifestyle | February 2014

knowing that our restaurant is representing the Girl Scouts.” While details of his dessert are still under wraps, I can share that Osteen is creating a mint ice cream sandwich. Sous Chef Kelli Sappington from the Olive & Ivy in Old Town Scottsdale is also competing. “It’s a great opportunity for girls and helps build them into strong women,” says Sappington. “Our restaurant’s new focus is on fresh, young and super fun, and this is a great way to tie in those ideas while supporting a great charity.” Sappington was never a Girl Scout, but remembers spending a lot of time in the kitchen, baking, as a kid. “When I’m in the kitchen, it gives me strength and confidence, and we all need something that gives us that feeling,” says Sappington. “The Girl Scouts help girls find what gives them confidence.” Sappington is creating a blueberry cheesecake gelato using the Trefoils as the crust of the cheesecake. Both the gelato and the blueberry jam is made in-house. “It’s nice to see the chefs really getting behind the girls and supporting this event,” says Susan de Queljoe, the senior associate of marketing and fund development for the AZ Cactus Pine Council, which govern the Girl Scouts in Central and Northern Arizona. De Queljoe says there are a couple of exciting changes on the horizon for the organization. First, the Scouts will be doing direct sales with their cookies, so no more waiting for them to be de-

livered. Secondly, they will be using funding from the Girl Scout Cookie Challenge and cookie sales to help renovate Camp Sombrero, located at the base of South Mountain. The camp has been around since the 1940’s, but in recent years it’s been used for staff development and as a day camp for the scouts. Cabins and air conditioning will be added, so that it can used as a year-round urban camp for kids. “Girl Scouts is the premiere leadership development organization for girls and we look forward to bringing the Girl Scouts to areas where girls might not have access to us,” says De Queljoe. “The world has changed quite a bit since I was a scout, they have so many more choices to deal with and we help teach them to make good decisions in their lives.” The funding from the cookie sales stays in the council to benefit the Girl Scouts, which is a nonprofit organization that depends heavily on their volunteers. “We call this a cookie program not a cookie sale, because the girls learn key skills like financial literacy,” says De Queljoe. “They also learn other real life skills such as goal setting, money management, people skills, business ethics and decision making. It’s so much more than cookie sales; these are the skills you need throughout life, whether you are a stay at home mom or a CEO of a Fortune 500 company.” When I think of Girl Scouts I think cookies, green sashes and badges. I think of motivated girls selling cookies at booths with their moms, who made time to be at their side. I think of girls learning to be entrepreneurs; taking a brave step into the business world. The Girl Scouts have changed since I was a scout. While they still do crafts and learn outdoor skills, today they are also learning to be confident leaders in a competitive world.
