Editor’s Letter

A

rt holds a dear spot in my heart. Since I was a young girl, I cannot remember a time when art was absent from my life. Whether it was finger painting, learning to draw from my grandfather, or taking advanced art classes in high school to now keeping a journal for my daughter, art has and always will be a part of my life. There were a couple of times in high school where my art was entered into contests and shows. I even took “Best in Show” my senior year. I had plans to go to art school until I met my future husband. It seemed as though God had a different plan in mind for me.

There is something about sitting down with a blank piece of paper or canvas and simply imagining what that space of white could turn in to… a portrait or a stunning landscape with mountains and sea. It could be a song written from the depth of your heart or it could have on it the words that tell a beautiful love story. Art shows up in all different ways. Some art is simple and some is intricately put together, but it’s all beautiful in its own way, especially when you’ve invested a part of yourself into it. by Community ™

OSTRICH FESTIVAL

THE INTERGALACTIC NEMESIS

Carousel tells the story of carousel barker, Billy Bigelow and mill worker, Julie Jordan, and their tragic romance. With music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, the musical celebrates its 70th Anniversary. Timeless classics like “June is Bustin’ Out All Over” and “If I Loved You” will be performed. Carousel runs from Friday, March 6th to Sunday, March 22nd in the Nesbitt/Elliot Playhouse of Mesa Arts Center. To learn more about the show, visit MesaArtsCenter.com.

It’s March, so you know what that means: it’s Ostrich Festival time. Celebrating Chandler’s history of ostrich ranching, the Festival has activities for both adults and children. Chandler Chamber of Commerce and Universal Fairs is behind putting on the event, which began in 1989. It has grown to become a top festival in the Southwest with more than 250,000 attendees during the three-day affair. This community event will have ostrich races, a carnival, ostrich-themed activities, delicious food, and upscale arts and crafts. Featured during the weekend will be nationally recognized musical groups, as well as local and regional ones. Dozens of community groups will be performing music and dance throughout the three days of fun. If ostrich products are more what you’re looking for, Ostrich Alley is for you. There you can purchase leather goods, ostrich foods, and feather dusters. You can also see young ostriches up close and learn about them from the experts who raise them. The Ostrich Festival will also have its 5km Fun Run/Walk and its Parade on Saturday, March 7th, starting at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. respectively. The 2015 Chandler Chamber Ostrich Festival runs from March 13th through March 15th at Tumbleweed Park, 2250 South McQueen Road east of South Arizona Avenue and south of East Germann Road. To learn more about the Festival, visit ChandlerAZ.gov or call the Chandler Chamber of Commerce at 480.963.4571.

Learn about adventures that happened in the 1930s as comic book and radio play styles combine to form the live-action graphic novel, The Intergalactic Nemesis. The 1,250 full-color, hi-res comic book panels, a pianist playing the cinematic score, and three actors voicing the dozens of characters bring to life this comedic sci-fi tale. This live graphic novel experience takes place on March 14th and March 15th at Mesa Arts Center. To learn more about The Intergalactic Nemesis, visit MesaArtsCenter.com.

EVIL DEAD THE MUSICAL The story of five friends unleashing an evil force during a weekend at an abandoned cabin in the woods comes to the stage in Mesa. Based on the Evil Dead film franchise, this original production will have all the dismembered limbs and ho hum demon jokes that it has for the past eleven years. The show will also include the catchy tunes “All the Men in My Life Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons” and “Look Who’s Evil Now,” as well as a “splatter zone” where designated audience members will get covered in fake blood and take part in other effects. The show is sure to garner some oohs, ahhs and at least a few laughs. Evil Dead will run from Tuesday, March 24th until Sunday, March 29th at Mesa Arts Center located at 1 East Main Street. For more information about the show, visit MesaArtsCenter.com.

Zelma Basha Salmeri Gallery of Western American and American Indian Art HOW A PERSONAL COLLECTION GREW TO BECOME A PASSION, LEGACY TO SUPPORT THE ARTS ARTICLE MEGHANN FINN SEPULVEDA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

I

t was intended to be just a hobby, one that supported the arts as suggested by his Aunt Zelma. Combining his appreciation of art, as well as his other passion--history of the American West--Eddie began collecting. Piece by piece the collection grew, and so did the personal friendships he developed with each artist. Today, the privately owned art collection of Eddie Basha, Jr. and his family is displayed at the Zelma Basha Salmeri Gallery of Western American and American Indian Art in Chandler. More than 3,500 pieces of beautiful art continue to inspire and educate the community while honoring and paying tribute to the legacy of a man who took great pride in giving back. FAMILY INSPIRATION

Aunt Zelma was an artist, frequently sketching pictures for Eddie when she cared for him as a young boy. The early influence of Aunt Zelma accounts for Eddie’s early appreciation of and for art. Following graduation with a degree in history from Stanford University, Eddie joined the family grocery business. It wasn’t until Aunt Zelma encouraged him to start a hobby that he purchased his first piece of art in 1971. The family duo began visiting art galleries and attending art shows. They would meet artists, sometimes in their studios, and discuss the history and motivation behind a particular piece of work. The conversations turned into lifelong friendships, some that spanned more than 30 years. 12

Chandler Lifestyle | March 2015

In 1992, Eddie officially opened the gallery and served as curator, creating separate spaces for each distinctive collection of Western American and American Indian art. Over time, the gallery was expanded and renovated to provide additional display space and to brighten the presentation. In 2005, a woven basket room was created, featuring Pima, Yavapai and Apache baskets from tribes indigenous to the Southwest. When Aunt Zelma passed away in 1997, Eddie dedicated the art gallery in her memory. ART COLLECTION

Composed of oil paintings, watercolors, acrylics, pastel and charcoal drawings, bronze, wood and natural stone sculptures, woven baskets, pottery, katsinas and jewelry, the art collection is currently on display and free to the public. Some of the works date back to the late 1800s. Arizona’s hometown grocer, Bashas maintains a longstanding relationship with American Indian communities. Members of the neighboring Pima tribe were some of the grocery store’s first customers, trading mesquite wood and other items for flour, sugar and other essentials. Sculpted from the root of the cottonwood tree, Hopi Katsinas, representational sculptures of the “Spirit Gods,” are displayed by the dozens in a variety of shapes and sizes. Beautiful hand-painted clay pottery and Zuni treasures referred to as “fetishes,”

small animal depictions thought to have special power to the people who use them, are also on exhibit. A collection of jewelry featuring some natural elements as diverse as seashells, ocean glass, turquoise, coral, pearls and diamonds are truly exquisite works of American Indian artistry. Award-winning Western American contemporary art pieces in a variety of mediums that depict historical events truly showcase not only the talents and skills of many artists, but their profound commitment to the authenticity and accuracy of these period pieces.

There is no cost for admission; however, it’s important to call prior to a visit in the event the gallery is closed due to maintenance or for a private function. The gallery serves as a unique venue for local Valley non-profit charitable functions. With a capacity of 250, gallery staff can assist in scheduling, planning, set up and logistics. A

s spring rolls in, most of us are ready to shed the sweaters and shed the calories. Studies have shown that adding a nutritious “smoothie” to your daily diet regimen is an easy, fast way to curb hunger and boost vitamins. Smoothies were originally just fruit juice drinks with added ice, but they have recently evolved into vibrant blended drinks, which can serve as satisfying meal replacements and healthy liquid snacks. There are numerous nutritious combinations of fruits and vegetables, which can add potassium, fiber and calcium to your smoothie. These delicious Spring Smoothies feature a blast of vitamin C from strawberries and kiwi; a powerful punch of potassium from avocados and bananas; and disease-fighting antioxidants from blueberries and pineapple. Blended with milk and yogurt, these smoothies encourage bone strength by providing over a third of your daily calcium requirement in one eight ounce serving. Try a smoothie for breakfast to help get you hydrated, a benefit soda and coffee don’t provide; the fruit fiber will also remove the temptation to indulge in the empty carbohydrate calories of all those office donuts, helping to keep your diet on track. Best of all, a nutritious smoothie will help get you in great shape for your summer swimsuit. STRAWBERRY AGAVE SMOOTHIE

The classic combination of strawberries and bananas creates a pretty pink smoothie loaded with healthy antioxidants. With over 150 percent of vitamin C per serving, this creamy smoothie is also high in potassium and manganese. The soy milk, a rich source of calcium, helps the body repair bone cells. Lean soy protein is easily converted by your body and used as energy. This refreshing smoothie is sweetened with agave nectar, a syrup made from the agave plant native to Mexico, a healthier alternative to refined sugar. Plus, this super skinny smoothie has only five grams of fat. 10 large, fresh strawberries 1 banana (peeled and sliced) 3/4 cup ice 2 tablespoons agave nectar 2/3 cup soy milk (or 2% milk)

kiwi fruit, wrapped in a thick brown shell, is a nutrition powerhouse. Kiwis give this pretty smoothie a large dose of vitamin C to protect the immune system, potassium for heart health and fiber to improve digestion. Plus, it’s amazingly low in fat and calories, to give you a beach body fast! 2 kiwi (peeled and chopped) 1/2 cup low-fat yogurt 1/4 cup fresh pineapple, chopped 3/4 cup pineapple juice PREPARATION:

Combine all ingredients in blender; blend until desired smoothness. NUTRITION: Calories:295; Fat: 2.8g; Vitamin C: 285%. COST PER SERVING: $2.15 BLUEBERRY AVOCADO SMOOTHIE

A healthy morning alternative to a fat-packed blueberry muffin, this fragrant blueberry smoothie will jump-start your day with a nutrition boost from its surprise ingredient: avocado. Packed with potassium, avocados also provide a healthy dose of antioxidants (vitamins A, C, E), vitamin K, copper and folate. Antioxidant nutrients support the immune system and help protect the body from cellular damage. The avocado does not change the flavor of the berries, rather it gives this smoothie a creamy texture along with heart-healthy unsaturated fat known as monounsaturated fat, which helps lower overall cholesterol levels. Virtually fat-free and with only 80 calories per cup, blueberries add a vibrant color along with the health benefits of reducing belly fat and improving blood sugar. To keep this smoothie cool during your morning commute, simply add a few ice cubes before blending. 1 cup frozen blueberries 1 container (6 ounces) vanilla yogurt 1/3 fresh avocado (pitted, peeled and diced) 1 cup 2% milk 4 ice cubes (optional)

Chandler’s Annual Jazz Festival focuses on the ART of music The 16th annual community event is being held March 27 and 28 ARTICLE MEGHANN FINN SEPULVEDA PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

W

hether you like blues, modern, traditional or New Orleans-style jazz, the 16th Annual Chandler Jazz Festival has you covered. The two-day event, being held March 27 and 28 at Dr. A.J. Chandler Park in downtown Chandler, brings a wide variety of both local performers and national headliners that will surely entertain jazz music fans of all ages. Featuring an impressive lineup of new artists from all genres, grab the family, bring a lawn chair and enjoy this premiere event. HISTORY

The inaugural jazz festival was held in 2000, consisting of only five bands. The following year, the event was moved inside the San Marcos Resort because of inclement weather, which did not deter the crowd. In the years that followed, the event grew and paid special tribute to jazz artists from around the country, introduced a children’s activity, and expanded the entertainment to include an arts and crafts fair. In 2008, the festival held its largest event to date, showcasing 32 bands and 175 musicians. A special concert was held at the Center for the Arts by New Orleans native Dr. John, with an opening performance by the Kenny Garrett Quartet. Then, in 2013, the festival drew a re18

cord turnout on Friday night when a very popular band from Los Angeles, “El Chicano” performed. Last year, event organizers introduced Friday night “Blues Night,” reminiscent of the French Quarter in New Orleans Square. “Based on feedback from the crowd, we knew folks wanted variety,” said Hermelinda Llamas, special events coordinator for the City of Chandler. “We partnered with the Phoenix Blues Society to offer a cool new twist featuring music from this genre. It was a huge success.” EVENT PERFORMANCES

The jazz festival is scheduled to take place in the evening from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, March 27, and from noon to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28. Main stage performer lineups for Friday’s event include musicians such as Brian Kabala, Jimmy Pines and Washboard Jere, Bad News Blues Band and Cold Shott and the Hurricane Horns. On Saturday, guests can enjoy jazz tunes from Neamen Lyles Experience, Stan Sorenson Trio, Con Alma, and headliner Sean Jones Quartet, hailing from New York. Sidewalk bands and merchant bands will be performing at the two-day event. “Every year we have a new headliner,” Llamas said. “We’re always looking for established groups. Typically jazz is a bit more vibrant in the south.” Other highlights from the festival include an arts and crafts fair with local vendors, and a beer and wine garden for guests 21 and older. Event admission and parking is free. FAMILY-FRIENDLY

Jazz music lovers big and small can enjoy the family-friendly event. “The laid back crowd demonstrates just how infectious music can be,” Llamas said. “The area in front of the main stage naturally becomes a dance floor and is usually filled with children dancing and having fun.” Saturday performances include members of Chandler Unified School District’s Willis Junior High’s jazz band and Chandler-Gilbert Community College Big Band. “Children can see the evolution of music from younger to older generations,” Llamas added. “They can begin to really appreciate music.” “How Cool is Jazz” is a special activity and technique geared towards youth which is also offered as a program in local schools. The goal is to teach children how to play music on a kazoo. During this fun portion of the event, kids receive brief instruction followed by a performance for the crowd. Families who wish to bring their children to the event are encouraged to do so. “It’s a very relaxed atmosphere and a good opportunity for parents to expose their kids to music,” Llamas said. “Parents can bring blankets and chairs and enjoy the beautiful weather and CONTINUED > kids can play in the outdoor grassy area.” March 2015 | Chandler Lifestyle

(CONTINUED)

FOOD AND DRINKS

While outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are permitted, there are plenty of food and drink choices available for purchase. A variety of booths featuring food vendors will be available serving up food that mimics the south. Downtown Chandler restaurants, bars, art galleries and retail stores will be open during the event. Some restaurants will feature special menus and offer live music to keep the vibe strong. “It’s great for people who wish to make a day out of it,” Llamas said. “They’ll leave for lunch and then make dinner reservations at a nearby restaurant later that evening.” VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteers play a huge part in the successful execution of the jazz festival. Volunteers ages 19 and older are needed in the beer and wine garden, and also for festival operations such as staffing the information booth, clean up, backstage logistics and event program distribution. “Volunteers make the experience top notch for our guests,” Llamas said. Those interested in signing up to volunteer can still do so and are encouraged to complete an application by going online to chandleraz.gov. SPONSORSHIP AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Thanks to the support from the City of Chandler and Chandler City Council, along with sponsors and community partnerships, events like the jazz festival can continue to take place. “The City does as many free events for the community as possible,” Llamas said. “We want everyone to have a chance to be exposed to an art that may not necessarily be very popular.” The event is paid for, in part, through the city’s established budget, sponsorships and partnerships. “We want to keep that exposure alive,” Llamas said. “We take great pride in knowing we are able to offer this to our residents.”

You Nailed It TIPS FOR PERFECTLY PRETTY NAILS

N

ails have become the ultimate form of self-expression in beauty. From classic French manicures and gel finishes to elaborate designs and bold neons, nails reflect your own unique style. This season, make sure your tips are healthy and perfectly polished to enhance your overall appearance.

For the best results, cut and file right after bathing when your nails are soft. The Studio 35 beauty line offers nail implements and all the basics you need to maintain your manicure, such as Nail Polish Remover Liquid, Jumbo Cotton Balls and Buffing Blocks. CUTICLE CARE

POLISH YOUR LOOK

Whether you want a pop of color to match a new outfit or a subdued nude overlay, a perfect polish is the final step needed to complete a well-crafted look. No matter your personal style, there are hundreds of shades to choose from. To nail your ideal shade, visit a store that has a wide color selection of nail polish, like Walgreens, which has over 8,000 convenient locations for all your beauty needs. MAKE MOISTURIZING A HABIT

Before you break out the polish, be sure to also give proper attention to your hands. Invest in a deeply hydrating formula of hand cream or body lotion and apply to hands throughout the day, every day. Some key ingredients to look for include retinol, vitamin B and alpha-hydroxy acids, which work together to provide smooth, supple skin from the fingertips to the palms.

The cuticle located above the nail bed also requires proper moisture, so be sure to use a special cuticle formula or your favorite lotion to apply onto this area. If you have brittle nails, invest in a strengthening base coat before you begin to polish, such as Essie Grow Stronger Base Coat, Smooth & Protect. By keeping your nails looking maintained, clean and polished, you’ll set the tone for your beautiful appearance. For your nail care needs, visit your local Walgreens or shop online at Walgreens.com. TIPS FOR A PERFECT MANICURE

With so many wonderful nail care products available, it’s easy to turn your home into your own mini salon. Here are a few simple tips to achieve a perfectly manicured set of nails. REFRESH YOUR LOOK

MAINTAIN YOUR MANICURE

The signs of healthy nails include a strong, smooth surface, free of dents and dings, with a consistent, uniform color throughout. Invest in quality nail care supplies to keep them looking their best. A complete kit should include a fingernail clipper, cuticle stick, emery board and a buffer. While the rate at which your nails grow can vary from person to person, filing about once a week is a good way to keep up with maintenance. Of course, filing is a good idea any time chips, breakage or rough edges appear. 22

Chandler Lifestyle | March 2015

Brighten up any day or night with brilliant color. Give your nails personality with the beautiful shades from the Revlon ColorStay collection with flirty hues, such as Bubbly or Trendy. BRIGHTEN UP WITH HOT HUES

Small, chic updates to your look don’t require spending a fortune. Paint those nails pretty with the most sought-after colors of the season — vibrant neons. To get the look, check out the Sittin’ Pretty or Vices Versa shades by Essie.

AT-HOME INNOVATIONS

While many women rush to their local salon for professional gel procedures, new athome products provide the same look, feel and durability. Some manufacturers even offer gel products that don’t require an LED light for application, like Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy, which gives flawless color and brilliant shine in just two steps.

Uptown Art – Chandler GINETTE DAY DISCOVERED HER ARTISTIC SIDE ARTICLE KORY KILMER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY UPTOWN ART-CHANDLER

N

ot even four years ago, Ginette Day was a general manager at a successful Ford dealership deep in the heart of the American Midwest. It was a chance encounter during a girl’s weekend to Nashville, however, that would guide her toward an unimagined new career. There, she spent some time with the CEO of an informal art studio that would eventually become known as Upstart Art. The encounter sparked a love of painting she might otherwise never have known existed. “I immediately fell in love with the idea and the concept,” explains Ginette. “I am not an artistic person whatsoever. The instructors there were able to teach me and by the end of the day I was able to leave with a reasonable looking painting. But more importantly, I just had so much fun, and right away I knew this was something I wanted to learn more about and become a part of.” After her husband’s career offered them an opportunity to relocate from Indianapolis to Arizona, Ginette knew it might just be the right time to make a career change of her own. After a bit of research she found a void in the south Chandler market, and in December of 2013, Uptown Art-Chandler opened its doors Nearly every night of the week, Uptown Art offers classes to anyone over 12 years of age, and supplies everything from paint to brushes to canvases. They also provide the instruction, to help guide everyone towards creating their own masterpiece each and every time. Uptown Art-Chandler has also developed a variety of off-site offerings to address some opportunities that are growing within the Chandler market, including corporate team-building events, and both bridal and birthday parties. Over the last few months they have also established a partnership with RA Sushi, which has evolved into Sunday afternoon classes on the patio of a different metro RA restaurant each week.

Chandler Lifestyle | March 2015

Whether it is on-site or off, Ginette understands hers is a business that is much more than teaching others how to paint. More than anything it is about the experience and surrounding herself not only with amazing artists but also equally amazing people will be the cornerstone of Uptown Art-Chandler’s success. “Of course they don’t need to be creative and have a lot of artistic ability,” says Ginette. “But in reality it is personality that wins out over everything else. It can be intimidating for people who have never painted before to come in to a social atmosphere like this. People tend to self-judge themselves pretty hard, but it is our job to try and take that pressure away and make it a fun experience. “We say this is ‘fun art,’ and not ‘fine art,’ so it really is the personality that is key. We have customers who are now coming in for certain teacher’s classes rather than what they might be painting that night, and those relationships are great to see.” Going back to her days working for a family-owned Ford dealership in Indiana, Ginette also believes that if you are part of a community, then it is your responsibility to give back to that community. She has brought that same approach to Uptown Art, where once a month they hold a fundraiser for a local animal shelter, as well as working with an adult daycare to extend complimentary instruction. “Anything we can do to help out, even in just a little bit of a way, is important,” adds Ginette. “Whatever you put out, you will always get so much more back.” Uptown Art is located in Chandler next to the Orange Theory Fitness at the northeast corner of Germann and Dobson Road in the Pecos Shops. For additional information regarding class schedules, private parties, and other events including Saturday afternoon classes for kids, give them a call at 480.813.8059 or visit their website at UptownArt.com/Chandler.

Fibber Magee’s A NEIGHBORHOOD IRISH PUB

ARTICLE KATHLEEN BLAIR | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

O

nce you step into Fibber Magee’s Irish pub, you’ll feel like you’ve experienced a touch of Ireland, even if it is thousands of miles away. This neighborhood pub has captured the Irish pub ambiance with authentic Irish food, a wide selection of Irish beers and whiskeys, plus a wonderful warm atmosphere for neighbors to gather. The word “pub” is short for public and Irish townfolks would gather in the local pub where they would find a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Originally, pubs only served alcohol and no food. They were traditionally owned by families that would bear the family name. In the small towns of Ireland, the pub was the hub and social center for celebrations, mourning and other events. The Irish word CRAIC describes the pub’s setting perfectly; it means having a fun, good time with friends. Fibber Magee’s got its name from the Irish tale about a local townsman name Magee. He was a storyteller who would tell fascinating tales of his journeys, where he was the main character. Even though everyone knew this man never left the town, it didn’t matter. Everyone loved his tales of love and loss, even if they weren’t true. ONLY A STRANGER ONCE

Matt Brennan, general manager for the last two years, has 20 years experience in the beer industry, as well as having owned a bar himself. He knows the right ingredients required to maintain a successful establishment. “I want my staff to greet everyone as a friend and that they leave feeling like they’re a member of the Fibber Magee’s family,” says Brennan. 26

Chandler Lifestyle | March 2015

And, that’s the atmosphere you’ll find when you visit: friendly and welcoming. GOOD FOOD ANYTIME

With a wide selection of appetizers and entrees, there is something for everyone in the family. From their appetizers, I enjoyed the tempura batter green beans served with a delicious sesame ginger sauce. I also tried the Dirty Nellies’, a large pile of thinly sliced, crisp potatoes served with caramelized onions, bacon, bleu cheese and roasted red pepper crema. They are incredibly tasty and I guarantee you won’t be able to eat just one. Sandwiches consist of blackened chicken, meatloaf, crispy cod, classic Rueben, caprese and pulled pork. There are six halfpound USDA choice beef burgers to choose from: the Belfast burger with caramelized onions; the Rasher burger made with the Irish bacon; the barbecue Jalapeño burger; the green chili burger; the bleu cheese burger; and the peppercorn burger. Other items include corned beef and cabbage; pan-seared cod; flat breads; soups and salads. A full Irish breakfast platter is served all day, every day. It’s a very generous serving that includes two eggs, cooked the way you like.

There’s a serving of the Irish bacon, Rasher, which is cured, not smoked, pork loin, and Bangers, which are Irish sausages that got their name because if they are overcooked the sausage would explode making a “bang” sound. Also include are imported black and white pudding, which are sausage meats mixed with grains making them light and dark. The dark pudding consists of beef, oats, barley and wheat. And, the light pudding is made with pork, oats, barley and wheat. This breakfast platter also comes with Heinz baked beans, grilled tomato wedges and fresh baked Irish brown bread. It’s very good and hearty meal. I especially liked the Rasher bacon and Banger sausage. I also enjoyed the fish and chips served with fries and the Shepherd’s Pie. The pie is made from high quality lamb that is imported from Australia. Many restaurants may have Shepherd’s Pie on their menu but it’s usually made with beef not lamb. Therefore, it should be called Cottage Pie, as Brennan tells me “Shepherd’s don’t tend cattle.” Kirk McIrvin, has been one of the bartender’s at Fibber Magee’s for the past three years. His heritage is a combination of both Scottish and Irish. “I’m a picky eater, but there’s nothing on the menu I don’t eat,” McIrvin shares. After sampling a few items, this writer can say she’ll be back to try a few more.

from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. – daily from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. (½ off appetizers and $1 off drinks) REVERSE HAPPY HOUR – Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. ($1.50 off drinks) HAPPY HOUR

An Irish pub won’t be a respectable pub without a great selection of beer. There are nine rotating craft beers; 12 pub draft beers that are always on tap; a selection of Irish and European imports; and American craft beer and ciders. Also, there is a small selection of American, import and craft cans as well as Irish whiskey and other spirits. ST. PATTY’S DAY CELEBRATION

Fibber Magee’s knows how to throw a huge Saint Patrick’s Day celebration. One of the largest in the Valley, the party takes place both indoors and out. The parking lot is set up for an outdoor block party with live entertainment, grill and beer garden. Reservations that day are for breakfast only. I recommend you arrive early, if you plan on attending. Fibber Magee’s aims to please everyone with six flat screen TV’s, three dart boards, two pool tables, Pub Trivia on Tuesday evenings from 8 to 10 p.m., and wi-fi. It’s also the home of the Seattle Seahawks fan club “The Sea Hawkers.” Over the past 12 years, this gastropub has made a wonderful name for itself in both the neighborhood and community. Numerous awards and many ongoing community projects and charity donations show they’ve established some deep roots. The combination of quality food prepared by Chef Jana Giordano, a wide selection of drinks, and live entertainment from Wednesday thru Saturday evenings has made this an afterhour’s destination frequented by those in the industry. Fibber Magee’s has certainly lived up to its mission statement: “To be the highest quality authentic Irish Pub in the market, offering excellent standards of food, drink, guest service and hospitality.” For a list of daily food and drink specials, entertainment lineup and upcoming events, check out their website and Facebook page.

The Vision Kidz Program “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.” --Scott Adams, cartoonist

I

maginations fly free as little hands, many new to art, dip brushes into cups filled with colorful paint. The kids carefully apply the colors to the pottery pieces they designed and sculpted, under the tutelage of a professional artist at the Vision Gallery’s Vision Kidz Program in Chandler. Kids go home with a piece of art, a better understanding of the creative process and hopefully, pride in a job well done. The Vision Kidz program offers art classes, in a variety of mediums such as pottery, quilting, painting, sculpting and movie making, to children in metropolitan Phoenix. All workshops are taught by professional artists and are offered at no cost to families. The gallery itself is a non-profit organization, managed by the Chandler Cultural Foundation, and a portion of all their art sales are used to fund the kid’s program. “If you’ve ever driven down Arizona Avenue and noticed the artwork in the light boxes at the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) stations you are seeing the talents of our Vision Kidz participants,” says Yvonne Villareal-Torres, the visual arts assistant for the Vision Gallery and the coordinator for the Vision Kidz Program. The children also have the opportunity to display their work at the Vision Gallery, the Chandler Center for the Arts and other public event and exhibitions, including locations such as the Chandler libraries and Chandler Fashion Square. “I feel a tremendous reward in my participation in bringing the Vision Kidz program to our community,” says Villareal-Torres. “Art has a way of impacting our lives. It helps children develop creatively, it aids in the development of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects and helps with creative problem solving. The benefits of art go beyond our classroom, extending into our community.” Villareal-Torres, who has been with the gallery since 2009, intimately understands the benefits of art and the creative process. She, too, is an artist who works in a variety of mediums, and exhibits her work throughout the Southwest. She began her journey with the Vision Gallery assisting, teaching and helping to coordinate the kids’ program.

28

Chandler Lifestyle | March 2015

“The program was developed with the intent for it to provide arts curriculum that is above mere craft, taught by working professional artists and provided free of charge to our community,” says Villareal-Torres. They reach more than 2,000 kids annually, between workshops and community events. Classes take place at the gallery on Saturdays and are available to children between the ages of 6 to 16. Parents must pre-register their children and can sign them up for three workshops at a time. “In the past we have had program participants return after completing their education and becoming professional artists,” says Villareal-Torres. “We have also had a student who participated in the workshops during her elementary years, return to exhibit with us. We are happy to provide her with an opportunity to market her artwork.” The gallery accepts submissions in January and June, and sends out calls for artists for specific exhibits. Artists are encouraged to submit exhibition ideas as well as individual artworks. “The Vision Gallery is a great space to see local Arizona artists. Our exhibits are on a rotational basis so there is always something new and intriguing to see,” says Villareal-Torres. There are many life lessons to be learned through art, and thanks to Vision Kidz Program, children have the opportunity to shape their creativity and watch their ideas come to fruition. Submit your favorite nonprofit organization, or a special person involved in the community, for our Giving Back department, to MichelleMGuerrero@live.com.

The gallery is open Monday-Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Their exhibit schedule, along with more information about the gallery and Vision Kidz Program, can be found on their website at VisionGallery.org.

Parting Thoughts

The Art of Acquiring Art WORDS DENISE SNODELL

Y

ou can’t spell painting without “pain.” This is something I learned at a silent auction several years back. While attending an outdoor literary festival, I stumbled upon a booth featuring one of my favorite local artists. Local for me, I should say, because I’m sure his colorful, whimsical paintings sell across the nation. He just happens to share my area code. This was a big “yay.” The artist had actually offered about a dozen of his originals for an on-the-spot silent fundraising auction. His booth happened to be tucked away from the crowds. And, as I mentioned, this was not an art festival. It was a literary festival. Most folks there had their noses in books. Not many oil sniffers were on the prowl. JACKPOT.

I called my husband, who was elsewhere that day. “You-knowwho is auctioning his paintings. I think they mislabeled his location. Hardly anyone seems to know he’s here. Should I stay and bid?” My husband responded with an un-publishable variant of, “Jeepers, yes!” So I committed myself to close down the event. As I have learned over the years, at silent auctions, one must linger until the last minute. Even if there’s low attendance, strange stuff happens at the end. The rule is to hover, to intimidate potential competitors while pretending to be civil and nonchalant—even though there’s smack-down rage simmering on the inside. Blink, blink, smile, oh, hello. Oops, pardon me. Blink, blink, smile. 34

I signed up for four paintings, because it was HIM, plus everything was such a deal. But there was one painting I really wanted. It was a still life with uplifting swirls of oranges and greens. A painting I would put in my office to gaze at maybe 50 times a day. As the afternoon ticked away, I would circle back to check on the auction sheets. People were catching on, so I had to re-bid now and then. Then the pesky issue of cost began to surface. I eventually decided to focus on just two works—but especially on my orange dream. My office painting. Mine. With every return visit, I would chat with the friendly artist, who was as colorful as an impressionist’s palette. By then my fandom became rock solid, and I mean Michelangelo-marble-slab rock solid. I had to own an original. I had to. In the final ten minutes, a mini-mob converged on the scene. Dang it. Pens flew across the bid sheets. But I was still safe. Countdown to my beautiful orange… Then, she appeared. Miss Artbucks. She blinked twice, smiled, and doubled my last bid before I had time to rationalize “spending too much.” Orange, crushed. I now own the other painting. I’m sure the artist was aware of the last-minute drama. He actually hugged me (not her) as he handed me my winning bid. I could not love it more: Three martinis atop a piano. An eternal promise of celebration. And, it’s a painting with a built-in back story. Literary festival, indeed.
