Editor’s Letter
Hello from your new editor. I
t’s an honor to join Chandler Lifestyle as your new editor.
As a contributing writer since the inaugural issue, I’ve had the opportunity to meet some incredible families, spotlight many local businesses and share details about dozens of community events that make Chandler so special. I'm looking forward to facilitating stories from the editor's chair.
This month in our “Green” issue, we’re focusing on ways to keep the earth clean and sustainable. At Chandler-based Sun Valley Solar Solutions, Joe Messner and Russ Patzer used their shared passion for technology, innovation and the environment to launch a successful residential and commercial solar panel business in 2006. Solar panels not only help homeowners save money on monthly electric bills but are also energy efficient. If you have a teen looking for ways to give back, check out the Green Teens program, ideal for those who want to focus on environmentally-based service projects such as animal care, educational programs, recycling, composting, park clean-ups and more.

The City of Chandler’s Solid Waste Services provides great information about recycling, along with a comprehensive check list of household items that are appropriate (and those that are not) for your blue bin. You’ll meet Chelle Daly and her family who share fun and unique ways about how recycling is incorporated into their daily lives. Finally, get to know a special teacher at Desert Sun Child Development Center who shares her passion of gardening with students to incorporate sustainability and environmental responsibility into the curriculum. It’s amazing for these preschoolers to watch their seeds grow into flowers, vegetables and fruit. This issue is packed with plenty of ways you and your family can go green. I encourage you to pitch in and do whatever you can to keep our earth beautiful.

Preschoolers Learning Sustainability Through Gardening CURRICULUM TOUCHES ON SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL, PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT ARTICLE MEGHANN FINN SEPULVEDA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

handler preschoolers are experiencing the cycle of life, appreciating the earth and respecting their environment as they dig, plant, water and care for their gardens at Desert Sun Child Development Center. From flowers and plants to fruit and vegetables, gardening is an important aspect of hands-on learning incorporated into the daily curriculum at this top-rated Arizona school.
Nothing ever goes to waste. “Tops of the carrots and other vegetables get fed to Cutie, the class Guinea pig,” Sheesley says. Each week two children are assigned as class gardeners. Through their individual jobs of watering and caring for the garden they learn about responsibility. “It gives them a sense of gratitude for what we grow and use,” Sheesley adds.
STARTING A GARDEN
EXTENDED LEARNING
At the beginning of the school year, teachers ask students to bring individual packets of seeds of wildflowers and herbs, and vegetables like carrots, snap peas, tomatoes and radishes. “I think carrots are the most popular because they are so bright and colorful and come directly from the ground,” says Cindy Sheesley, lead pre-kindergarten teacher. “The kids can pull them out, clean and eat them.”
Not only are children seeing their gardens flourish, they are expanding their social, emotional, physical and cognitive development skills, too. “We use comparison measures to look at the two different types of Swiss chard that is grown in our garden,” Sheesley says. “We compare the seed sizes and shapes.” Children have fun using science to predict how each seed will grow and

what it will look like. They practice balancing skills when using the large watering cans. Books like “Jack and the Beanstalk” and others about planting seeds are read in class. They also get to taste everything they grow. “Because they take great pride and ownership in the garden, they are more brave and willing to try new things,” Sheesley says. Gardening also gives teachers the opportunity to encourage children to work through their emotions practicing patience, courage, kindness and respect. “We have an ant hill right next to the garden,” Sheesley says. “We taught the children that ants are part of nature.” GROW AT HOME
Another big goal of gardening at Desert Sun Child Development Center is to encourage the practice at home. CONTINUED >

GARDENING BENEFITS THE WHOLE CHILD
Gardening offers active and engaging connections to academics, from science and math to nutrition and literacy. Students remember information better when they design experiments, use more than one style of learning, and can share their newfound knowledge with others. Gardening captures kids' interest, teaches them nurturing skills, gives them a sense of pride in their accomplishments, introduces them to healthful foods, and provides a way to improve and give back to the community.
“The kids are always so excited to come to school and check if their garden has grown,” Sheesley says. “They love it so much and we hope the enthusiasm carries over to their home environment." To learn more about Desert Sun Child Development Center, visit www.desertsun.org.

on’t let the R OG T modest appearance keep O PH IR | A you from stepping into this quaint L B EN E L cafe located on the southeast corner of Ray ATH K E L Road and Rural. And, don’t let the small menu fool you TIC AR as the fresh ingredients are packed with wonderful flavors. Café Cornucopia is a hidden treasure with an atmosphere that is cheerful, homey and inviting with food that will bring a smile to the most discerning diner. Owners Patti O’Donnell and Jeanie Reed met years ago when Reed was attending school in Marquette, Michigan. O’Donnell, originally from Michigan, and Reed, from Wisconsin, moved to Arizona 27 years ago. Little did they know the day O’Donnell took a trip to Bisbee, life would present a detour from their corporate jobs into restaurant ownership. O’Donnell stopped for coffee at a place called Café Cornucopia and started talking with the owner. She commented how charming the restaurant was and the owner said, “It’s for sale.” The rest is history. O’Donnell and Reed operated the cafe for 11 years. Everything they prepared was homemade from scratch with no preservatives. The cozy café had a wonderful ambiance being in a building that was 110 years old, with stained glass windows and an apartment above. Each day brought in tourists from all over the world. When they decided it was time to bring Café Cornucopia to the Valley, they found a local buyer. In November 2012, they opened their new location in Chandler. H AP

“Our customers are loyal jewels, they come from Cave Creek to Gold Canyon,” says Reed. MADE WITH LOVE, FROM SCRATCH
The day I visited, the soup du jour was tomato basil, a favorite of mine and I wasn’t disappointed. I equally enjoyed the split pea soup. Other popular soups include Thai chicken, peanut sweet potato, green chili pork, chicken tortilla and butternut squash. Reed carefully prepares all the soups and proudly claims to have prepared thousands of them. The café is known for having the best quiche in town. After sampling their deep dish green chili cheddar quiche, which is thick and fluffy, I can attest it’s probably the best I’ve ever had. All made from scratch, I savored each bite. It is also available gluten-free, custless and is equally delicious. On the menu board are sandwiches which include meatloaf; turkey, cheese and avocado; vegetarian; chili Jack; tuna; and egg salad. The fresh salads include potato, cole slaw (made with buttermilk not mayonnaise), fresh garden, Greek and a tuna platter. Their signature salad dressing is made with fresh lemon and garlic infused extra virgin olive oil and is fresh pressed each morning. Unlike most salad dressings, this simple dressing enhances the flavors of the salad ingredients and not masking them like most dressings. Meals are served with a slice of their popular homemade rolled oats and honey bread that is light with a slightly sweet flavor. It’s so delicious you’ll find yourself wanting to take a loaf home, but you will need to place an order a day in advance. O’Donnell bakes the bread fresh daily. With the warmer weather be sure to order one of the freshly squeezed lemonades that are made with fresh fruit, not syrup. Some flavors include tangerine, strawberry, peach and watermelon. There’s a daily special which may include entrées like lasagna, gnocchi, green chili pork stew, chicken breast salad and homemade chili with corn bread. If you like lemon bars, you are in for a real treat. These homemade bars have a wonderful lemon flavor, are not too sweet, and have a wonderful thick crust. They’re so yummy, they could become habit forming. Other desserts include cookies, brownies, pies and cobblers.

LIVING A DREAM
It is obvious that it’s a labor of love that motivates this duo to continue picking the finest ingredients to make all the food fresh every day. “We love people, we love to cook and we love cooking good food for our customers," says O'Donnell. "We feel blessed living the dream – waking up happy and doing what we love to do." Yes, Café Cornucopia lives up to its name of as being a House of Plenty….plenty of flavor! You may come in a stranger, but by the time you leave O’Donnell and Reed will treat you like you’re a new friend. I wish I lived in the neighborhood, as I’d be visiting this café regularly for the wonderfully prepared, delicious meals and friendly service. SUN VALLEY SOLAR SOLUTIONS Solutions Today For A Greener Tomorrow ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO PHOTOGRAPHY SUN VALLEY SOLAR SOLUTIONS
S
un Valley Solar Solutions (SVSS) sprouted in 2006 because Joe Messner and Russ Patzer had a shared a passion for technology, innovation and the environment, and the determination to put that passion to good use. Both were former Intel engineers who looked at the abundant Arizona sun and knew there was a better way to make electricity that could save money for countless families, while ensuring a cleaner and healthier planet for the next generation.
GROWING THE BUSINESS
Messner and Patzer continue to be actively involved in every aspect of the business, and some days, can be found in the trenches or making house calls. They are known for being committed to their customers and their employees. The company may have begun with two people with a bright idea, but it has flourished since. They have about 85 employees and are currently hiring. The business has been so successful, they are expanding to a new building a few blocks from their current headquarters on North Colorado Street in Chandler. “As Sun Valley Solar Solutions has grown, we’ve expanded to several different facilities throughout the Valley,” says Kyle Ritland, vice president of marketing. “The move will bring everyone under one roof, while expanding our warehouse and office facilities to meet our current demand and future growth plans.” 18
Chandler Lifestyle | May 2015
BECOMING ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE
Ritland is also passionate about the solar industry. Going to work for SVSS was a very personal move for him. He spent 17 years working in music and entertainment technology, and while traveling the world with his clients, he had an epiphany. “As I got older, I became much more aware of how our choices impact the world around us for generations. I became much more passionate about environmental issues. You could say that coming to work for Sun Valley Solar Solutions helps me focus that passion while helping others achieve financial relief and their own personal green goals. It feels good indeed,” says Ritland. Sun Valley Solar Solutions is commitment to customer service and proud to tout that most of their new business comes through referrals. They believe solar power is a way to change people’s lives for the better. MAKING THE CHOICE
When someone is interested in going solar, they’re asked to gather a year’s worth of utility bills to help evaluate their needs based on their actual power usage. A representative comes out to the home for a free evaluation. It’s nearly impossible for them to give a quote by phone because there are many factors to consider.
All types of homes are good candidates, but the ideal situation in Arizona is a south facing roof, which has the best sun exposure. If the roof is not ideal, a ground mount system is possible. Also, people who install solar panels tend to own their home because it's an investment. It’s also difficult before the evaluation to answer how much a person can save on their bill due to the variables. During the evaluation, homeowners are asked their goals. Do they want to cut their electric bill by 50 percent or completely eliminate their bill? Another factor is their utility provider; APS and SRP have different programs for solar customers. “I would love the Chandler community to feel proud of a home-grown, successful business that’s at the center of a very important shift in how people power their lives. Sun Valley Solar Solutions is at the center of this technology revolution,” says Ritland. For more information on Sun Valley Solar Solutions, visit www.Svssolutions.Com.
RITLAND’S TOP REASONS TO GO SOLAR: In Arizona we have our own natural power source right above our heads, and an average of 300 sunny days every year. Cashing in your piece of this abundant resource just makes logical sense (dollars and cents). The only sure thing is that energy costs are only going up. Solar is the only viable way to hedge against this fact by generating your own power. We do not sell pre-packaged systems. Our engineering driven approach ensures that our systems work at maximum efficiency for each unique customer for decades to come. We work with the best manufacturers in the world. We are a SunPower Elite dealer. An American company, widely recognized as the best panels in the world, and our “Elite” status is the highest quality ranking the company grants to their authorized dealers. The absolute best time to get solar is now. Public utilities are beginning to grapple with the fact that more people are choosing to generate their own electricity. As a result, there are new fees being considered for “new” solar customers, but existing solar customers are typically grandfathered into older and more favorable rate plans. Plus there are really good state and federal incentive programs. In 2014 Sun Valley Solar Solutions jumped to the second largest residential solar provider operating in Arizona, and the largest Arizona-based residential solar provider.

How Recycling Impacted One Chandler Family

he City of Chandler offers a comprehensive recycling program that goes beyond helping the environment. For Chandler resident Chelle Daly, the program, and others like it, play a significant role in her family’s lives. “I grew up by Chicago and I was in grade school when curbside recycling started,” says Daly. “It was limited what could be recycled there but we recycled everything we could.” She says that at the time only glass, paper and some plastics could be recycled in her area. Since moving to Chandler in 1998, she involved herself more in recycling efforts. But a lot of inspiration for her involvement came from her grandmother. Daly’s grandmother recycled and would look for cans to turn in at the local recycling center for money. “It was something she and her friends did when they were on walks, they would pick up cans off the street,” says Daly. “After a while they started picking them up out of the recycle bins too because they would get a little cash for it.” One day, a police officer stopped them and cited Daly’s grandmother and her CONTINUED >

friends for what was technically stealing from the city. They appeared before a judge not long after. “The judge looked at them and asked, 'Ladies are you going to do this again?' My grandma was mortified and said, ‘No, your Honor.’ So we teased her for years that she was corrupt. That was always a fun family story," Daly shares. REDUCING WASTE, SAVING MONEY
The City of Chandler’s recycling policy is right in line with Daly’s desire to make a difference. She says the program is perfect for her and her family, taking minimal time but still providing a large benefit, and not just to the environment. “I have a strong sense of awareness that for all of the income the city receives for recycling it reduces my trash fee,” says Daly. “I know the more I can get out there on the curb the less I’m paying once a month when I’m paying my city bill.” City of Chandler statistics show that Daly is correct. According to the city’s website, disposing one ton of trash costs $40 while recycling one ton of materials earns the city about $25. Recycled items only account for 25 percent of all garbage. “I know that if everybody recycled, even just 75 percent of what you could recycle, we’d all see our monthly (waste) bills go down,” says Daly. “It takes the same amount of effort to put it in the recycle bin as it does in the trash. I don’t see this taking up any more time than anything else.”
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
For Daly, the key to recycling success is not purchasing many non-recyclable materials to begin with. She says buying in bulk, avoiding potentially wasteful unnecessary purchases and making your own supplies can help with the burden that Chandler and many other cities face. "I think the best thing we can do is to not generate too much stuff that needs to be recycled," she says. "Try not to bring the waste in to begin with." For more information on what materials are accepted and how to get involved visit Chandler’s recycling webpage at ChandlerAZ.gov/ recycle.

CITY OF CHANDLER'S ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER OFFERS SERVICE PROJECTS, PROGRAMS
Be Green

P
aige became a Green Teen for the City of Chandler’s Environmental Education Center (EEC) at 14. She was a quiet girl who had dreams of studying science and biology in college and becoming a veterinarian. When Paige left the EEC at the end of her high school senior year, she left with self-confidence and strength that she didn’t know she possessed when she began her journey.
are contacted for an interview. During the interview they discuss what types of things the teens would like to do. “Many of the teens want ongoing projects,” says Ariane Francis, Recreation Coordinator II and the facility manager at the EEC. “They take on a lot of responsibility and parents aren’t typically around. Sometimes they’ll volunteer too, but the teens are responsible for themselves.”
GOING GREEN AT A YOUNG AGE
EXPOSURE TO WILDLIFE
Volunteers in the Green Teen Program have a unique opportunity to be a part of environmentally-based service projects, programs and events. Tasks they may help with include animal care, recycling, composting, park clean-up and trail maintenance. They may also help with educational programs and events such as the Earth Day and Arbor Day celebrations, or the Butterfly and Dragonfly Bash held in September. Paige’s specialty was the reptile exhibit. In addition to feeding them, she cleaned the habitat and kept it in good shape and ready for the public. Eventually, she volunteered twice a week. “She was taught the basics, but she took it one step further,” says Michael Ballard, a Recreation Coordinator I at the EEC, and Paige’s supervisor. “She was always a happy person with a great attitude. We really saw her grow with her interaction with the public and sharing what she loved about the animals.
The EEC is located at Chandler Veterans Oasis Park, which covers 113 acres and offers a wide range of recreational offerings such as a fishing lake, children’s play areas, picnic pavilions, an outdoor amphitheater and miles of walking and biking trails. An important aspect of the park are the five recharge basins used to recharge reclaimed water. The basins also provide riparian and wetland habitat to attract wildlife, which in turn creates educational opportunities. About two-thirds of the park is designated as a desert preserve. “I learn something new every day, either from my coworkers, the people that visit the park or the wildlife,” says Francis. “When I walk up the sidewalk, I see the same road runner every day, or I see a squirrel at my window as I’m on the phone. There are a lot of jackrabbits at the park. I didn’t realize there were so many different types before I started working here.” The water basins attract a plethora of animals to this oasis in Chandler. Scouts also volunteer at the EEC, and although they come to the program a little differently than the typical Green Teen, they are still considered Green Teens by Francis. In addition to doing
TEEN ELIGIBILITY
Teens 14 years and older are encouraged to apply for the program. There are single-day projects available, as well as ongoing volunteer opportunities. Candidates submit an application and 24

service projects, they help maintain the trails and spread mulch to prevent erosion on the hill. A few years ago, an Eagle Scout built an outdoor tortoise habitat. Recently, it was his brother’s turn to do an Eagle Scout project. “The brother updated the habitat, divided it and added Bermuda grass. The tortoises will eat the grass and it helps keep them cool,” says Francis. “The scouts do a lot and they are so motivated. If they need to raise money for their projects they will.” GAINING LIFE LESSONS
The EEC offers an annual training, and during the training they discuss duties and expectations. The teens sign in when they arrive and the center records their hours. “They are such a benefit to this program. We can offer more programs because of the teens and their contributions. When they run the feeding frenzy and are talking with visitors about the reptiles, snakes, scorpions, tarantula and baby tortoise, it allows staff to do other things,” says Francis. Francis is always open to hear program ideas from the teens. She wants to know what interests them and their families, so that she can offer educational opportunities they will all enjoy. “We are all about providing a quality service to the community,” says Francis.
Francis reminisced about Paige. She, too, remembers watching this shy teen mature through the years. She remembers how she shed her fears and began teaching the public about the reptiles. When Paige left the program, she wrote a paper detailing what she did each Tuesday and Friday, so the next generation of volunteers (as well as the staff ) could continue to provide them with the best of care. Standing Proud Pit Bull Rescue Center ARTICLE LEALA BARBETTINI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
W
agging tails, wiggling bodies and sweet kisses are never in short supply when hanging out with the pups of Standing Proud Pit Bull Rescue Center. Our current foster dog, Noelle, definitely checks all those boxes as she only holds still when she crawls into your lap to lick your face. She is the third dog we have welcomed into our home from the Mesa-based rescue since we started our fostering adventure last July. People often ask us if it’s hard to foster. They want to know if we become attached to the dogs. Yes, we do. Each one has left a special mark on our hearts (or in the case of Clark who left chew marks in my laundry basket so I am reminded of him every time I wash clothes), and the day they leave us is sad, but knowing that our county shelters are bursting at the seams with dogs, mainly pit bulls in need, makes it quite easy to let them go. Letting them go means another one will soon be saved. Founder Abby Cohen started Standing Proud Pit Bull Rescue in December 2013. In that short time she has created a Valley-wide network of sponsors, volunteers, donors and fosters who all play a crucial role in meeting the end goal for each of her special dogs: adoption. This support system is vital to the success of Standing Proud. Sponsors provide food, supplies and vet checks for the everyday care of the dogs. Monetary donations are needed to help with

dogs like Noelle and Crissy who need extensive medical care once leaving the shelter. Volunteers run events, network and help fosters exercise their dogs. Fosters provide a safe, loving home for the dogs to decompress and learn how to live the good life after their often stressful stint at the country shelter. Local rescues like Standing Proud are the reason many doggy lives are saved from the unfortunate fate thousands of others who didn’t make it out have faced. With dozens of dogs finding their way into our county shelters everyday, the need for foster and adoption is always expanding. If you would like to lend a helping hand to the homeless pit bulls of Maricopa County, visit www.standingproudpitbulls.org and fill out an application. The pit bulls will thank you!

Parting Thoughts
Kylie's Mom ARTICLE NATALIE HILL | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
I
will never forget the day I became Kylie’s mom. It was a little after 11 a.m. on August 4 when the nurse reported, “She has a full head of dark hair.” Being in labor for over 15 hours, I knew then that I had made it to the final stretch. All mothers know that inexpressible feeling when you are about to meet your own flesh. It’s a feeling of complete elation and terror. You spent the larger part of the past year preparing for that very moment. Registry completed, birthing classes done, nursery finished, car seat installed, you’ve ran through how the delivery would go down in your mind too many times to count — you got this, right? Yeah, that’s what I thought, too. I’m a project manager. I am one of the most organized and plan-oriented people I know. I had imagined motherhood would be just another job. There would be a handful of daily tasks to work through just like emails and voicemails and the occasional “rush job” would come up here and there. It all seemed pretty straightforward… so I thought. After a few pushes, Kylie made her grand entrance. I immediately reached for her and brought her directly to my heart that was exploding with love and happiness. At that very moment, my life changed forever. Within seconds of meeting my daughter I realized I had it all wrong. It had not even been an hour since Kylie arrived and I had never felt so comfortable in my own skin. I realized then that becoming Kylie’s mom was not my job; it was my purpose. My entire life

built up to this new chapter. Put simply, I was made to be Kylie’s mother and Kylie was made to be my daughter. It had only been minutes and already I was proud of the accomplishment we made together to safely bring her into the world. I knew then that my relationship with Kylie would be unlike any other. It would be one that fosters support and growth coupled with a lifetime of teaching and testing each other. I have learned and grown more in the first year of motherhood than I can ever remember. In the past nine months I have helped Kylie conquer several milestones. In exchange, Kylie has tested my patience and taught me the true meaning of selfless love. Kylie will continue to reach milestones and will eventually blossom in to the young woman she is meant to be. While waiting for that day to arrive, we will spend our time relishing the steps we take together to get there, including celebrating my first Mother’s Day as Kylie’s mom. Natalie Hill resides in Chandler with her husband, Andrew, and daughter, Kylie.
