Be Thankful, Be Giving and

GO*VETS is Helping our Veterans Dr. Chamberlain Gives in Costa Rica A Little Turkey Day History

Editor’s Letter

T

o be thankful has taken on a new meaning for me this year. Now that I have a daughter, all of the little things that seemed to matter to me before come second to her now. She is my joy, my sunshine, and to me, she is what being thankful is all about. Despite the tiring nights and the sometimes fussy days, being a mom is the greatest gift I have ever received. I am so grateful that God has chosen to give me this job of raising such a sweet and precious gift. I feel as though I understand true love and gratefulness a little more now each day.

Not only is it important to be thankful but also to be giving. This is what the Barro family of Barro’s Pizza does on a regular basis. The Barro brothers have believed in the importance of supporting education. In addition, the brothers are also on the front line helping to battle the fight against hunger. This is one family that sticks together and finds the reward of giving back to others. Brian Hazelgren is an entrepreneur whose GO*VETS foundation is dedicated to helping our veterans integrate back into society when they return from active duty. This foundation educates about starting a businesses, provides scholarships, job opportunities, and more. After all the sacrifice and selfless giving of our military personnel, Hazelgren finds it only necessary to give back to those who give us our freedom. Read about the GO*VETS foundation in our feature story this month. Travel to Costa Rica with Chandler orthodontist Dr. Tom Chamberlain to see how he is making an impact around the world. His passion for people and orthodontics sparked his his interest in helping all of those that he can. He even gets his staff and family involved. His recent trip to an orphanage left him feeling full of joy. Read more about his amazing trip in our Travel Wise article. Turkey day is around the corner and you can refresh your history of how Thanksgiving Day came to be in our History 101 article. Although it is a day to stuff our faces with way too much food, it’s also a day to reflect on all of the blessings that are a part of our lives. Being thankful and choosing to give are things we have to decide to do on a daily basis. Whether the day be good or bad, there is always something to be thankful for... the breath in your lungs, or a simple hug. It’s the little things that matter. Choosing to do these things will make you happy, and it doesn’t get much more rewarding than that.

History 101

Thanksgiving Story What It’s All About Article Moriah Schowengerdt “Give thanks to the LORD and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done.” – Holy Bible (NLT)

T

hanksgiving Day is full of warm hearts, family hugs and delicious food. There is nothing quite like a plate full of turkey smothered in gravy and a table full of the ones you love. It’s a tradition in my family for everyone to go around and say what they are thankful for. This event usually involves a few tears and lots of laughs. This is what we do today. But how was Thanksgiving Day celebrated back in its earliest years? The first ever Thanksgiving feast was held in the late fall of 1621 by the Plymouth Colony pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians, as most of us know. A great number of the Plymouth Colony had not survived the harsh winter and without the help of the Indians, they may have all died. As they gathered together on that day with a bountiful feast, the Plymouth Colony gave thanks for all of the help and assistance the Indians provided in their time of need. Since the first, there were many celebrations and days of giving thanks in American history. However, in 1789, President George Washington declared the last Thursday of November to be a National Thanksgiving Day, in honor of the United States Constitution. As the years and presidents passed, there came a time in our American history where we needed a man to stand up for what was right, just and fair. That man was our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. Through Civil War and all, Lincoln managed to stay positive and focused on what he wanted to be accomplished for our nation. In 1863, Lincoln decreed Thanksgiving to be a national holiday and it was to take place

12

Chandler Lifestyle | November 2014

on the last Thursday of November each year. Several years later, in 1941, the Thanksgiving date was officially changed to the fourth Thursday in November. Since Abraham made his proclamation, it is now tradition that the president of the United States will make a Thanksgiving Day proclamation each year. A tradition that I am sure all of America appreciates. As we look back through the history of Thanksgiving in the United States, it’s clear that in its originality, Thanksgiving was not just a day to thank our friends and family for being a part of our lives. It was a day to give thanks to God for all of His blessings. What an important thing to remember in this day and age.

he’s a mom of three children, full-time mortgage lender, and owner of two Orangetheory Fitness locations in Chandler. Even with a very busy schedule, Kris Price still manages to find time to hand out shoes and clothes and serve meals to the homeless.

Finding Her Passion

In addition to her family and career, Price makes health and fitness a priority. “Exercise helps me balance my life,” Price says. “It gives me the energy to manage it all.” In 2011, Price was a member of Orangetheory Fitness in Scottsdale. She loved the high intensity of the work out which incorporates cardiovascular exercise and strength training. She also was interested in owning her own business. As a franchised business, Orangetheory Fitness seemed like a good opportunity for her to diversity her portfolio and fulfill her dream. “It’s been wonderful,” Price says. “My family is great at pitching in and we all work together to make it happen.” On Sept. 9, 2011, Price opened her first Orangetheory Fitness in Pecos Ranch, which was recently renovated, adding all 16

new equipment, which is an integral part of the workout. Less than a year later, she added a second location in the Chandler Pavilions. Community Involvement

Price regularly volunteers with GIVE Girls (Girls, Inspire, Volunteer, Empower), a group of Chandler women who meet up and volunteer their time to those in need. Through her involvement with GIVE Girls, Price has participated in many volunteer events, spending several hours a month working with Phoenix Rescue Mission, an organization dedicated to ending hunger and homelessness. She has organized donation drives during the holidays to collect hundreds of shoes for the homeless at Orangetheory Fitness Chandler locations. “We find people on the streets of Phoenix who don’t have basic necessities such as hygiene items,” Price says. “I’m happy we can help people become mainstreamed to get them off the streets.” Price also serves meals at the Respite Shelter for homeless men. Additionally, through her involvement with the mortgage industry, Price partic-

ipates in The Care Fund, an organization that supports families who experience financial hardships when they are faced with caring for a critically-ill or injured child. She has planned fundraisers and contributes personally to the organization. Teaching Her Family

Price is setting a positive example for her children, Jordan, 16, Skyler, 12, and Maxwell, 6. The entire family volunteers at Feed My Starving Children, packing meals for malnourished children across the world. At Feed My Starving Children, volunteers can be as young as five. “Instead of sitting on the couch, we do this together,” Price says. “I’m hoping that they see how they are helping the less fortunate and will continue giving back well into adulthood.” The Price family also serves as bell ringers for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign during the holiday season. “We’re all given the same number of hours in a day. It’s what you do with those hours that really make a difference.” Learn more about Orangetheory Fitness at OrangeTheoryFitness.com.

GO*VETS Supporting Our Veterans Article Kathleen Blair | Photography Provided by GO*VETS

F

or the past three years, GO*VETS Foundation CEO Brian Hazelgren has been on a mission. He is contacting businesses for veteran support either by hiring a veteran or financially supporting them so they can receive scholarships, training and assistance in job placement. He works passionately on behalf of the Foundation he created to improve the quality of life for our veterans. Although not a military man himself, Hazelgren is from a family where 11 members served in the military. He has seen and heard from them the challenges they face when they come back from active duty and need to transition into civilian life. In fact, three of

his nephews, after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, were unable to find work and asked for his help. That’s when Hazelgren felt the nudge to do more. “I started this Foundation to help our veterans improve their quality of life,” he explains. “Our soldiers fought for, and continue to fight for the freedoms that we all enjoy. It’s time that we do something more than just talk about it, and stand up and fight for them. The programs and systems that we have help veterans start their own business, find employment through our network of corporate partners, or receive scholarship funds. I want to make a strong statement that we are here to help our military heroes become economic leaders.” The Right Experience

Hazelgren gained much success in the business world: he served as president of a vending machine manufacturing company, host of a Phoenix radio talk show called “All About Business,” a vice president of a consulting division for Sprint, and a partner in a retreat training camp for executives and small business owners. This background led the dean of the University of Utah, Jack Brianan, to Hazelgren. Brianan asked Hazelgren if he would consider starting an Entrepreneurship Center at the university. A graduate of Utah’s biggest rival (BYU), Hazelgren said yes under the condition he could wear his alumni school color and his championship ring. Brianan agreed and Hazelgren developed 18

the curriculum for a new four-year degree in entrepreneurship. He trained more than 3,500 students during his 10 years at the university. The program graduates have begun more than 1,000 startups and created 12,000 jobs. Hazelgren also was a co-developer of the Entrepreneur’s Challenge, a business plan competition with more than 4,000 student participants. It has been rewarding for Hazelgren to see some prior students on the television program “Shark Tank,” and one graduate recently sold his business for $1.8 million. Fundraising isn’t new to Hazelgren. He worked with the Children’s Miracle Network for seven years as chief development officer raising funds for more than 170 children’s hospitals, and led a team that raised $1.2 billion through fundraising campaigns. He also worked directly with more than 130 corporate sponsors to raise funds for this unique organization. With 27 years experience as an executive manager, a successful entrepreneur, trainer, business coach, author of 10 books and a motivational speaker, it’s obvious Hazelgren has the necessary experience to raise funds, enlist corporate sponsors and get our veterans trained so they can build productive lives for themselves and their families. The Vision of the Foundation

GO*VETS stands for Guided Operations Veterans Educational Training System. Hazelgren started this Foundation in Chandler in 2011. It is a non-profit, 5013c tax-exempt organization that depends on corporate sponsorship, private donations, product sales and grants to continue. Hazelgren works with local corporations, partnering to create jobs for the veterans. He is passionate about helping improve the quality of life for our returning soldiers. There are three pillars that structure the GO*VETS Foundation: Training and Education, Scholarships, and Job Creation. They offer 85 free workshops and online programs, including computer software training on Microsoft programs, how to start a business, and how to grow a business. A veteran can participate in the program for one year. The Foundation works with the veterans in personal development by helping them overcome major issues such as post traumatic stress disorder, anger management and oaddictions. And, the Foundation helps secure scholarships for veterans and their spouses so they can receive a $2,500 grant for continuing education. Currently, there are GO*VETS Centers in the states of Florida, Texas, Utah, Arizona and Oklahoma. In the past three years there have been more than 200 GO*VETS Foundation veterans trained and 34 per80 E. Rio Salado Parkway cent of those students startSuite 410 ed their own business. In the Tempe, AZ 85281 Vocational Rehab program, a 480.499.5390 corporation can partner with GoVetsFoundation.org the Veterans Administration

which will pay 50 percent of a veterans salary, as well as purchase tools and equipment. The Foundation’s corporate partners include: All Star Promotions; American Express Travel, Arbinger; Big Little Fudge; Davis Miles McGuire Gardner; E3 Factor; ESA (Entertainment Software Association); Heritage Academy; Knight Transportation; My Freedom Grocer; Northstar Management Systems; Papa John’s; Prime Snax; Red Barn Farms; Rockwell; Southwest Veterans Chamber of Commerce; Valor Box; Vanguard Golf Management and XO Team Lifestyle Worldwide. How to Help

There are several ways you can help support the GO*VETS Foundation. Papa John’s has recently introduced a program to order pizza online; enter the code “GoVets40” and receive 40 percent off your pizza, with 10 percent going to the Foundation. The Valor Box program allows you to adopt a veteran or active duty soldier with a monthly or quarterly donation. The Valor Box comes with packets of delicious, fresh U.S. beef jerky, special offers and coupons from companies associated with raising funds and awareness for the continuation of the Foundation’s work. Plus, there is an inspiring message about a soldier, a veteran, or a military family member to uplift their spirits. To learn more, visit their website at Valorbox.org. Other ways to help are to consider making a business or personal donation online; purchase some of that delicious beef jerky in a variety of flavors for you and your family; attend one of the special events; and if you own a business, consider hiring a veteran. Hazelgren’s goal is to have the Foundation train more 5,000 veterans in its first phase and create 38,000 jobs. His future vision is to add 16 more training centers across the country. This will create a ripple effect of placing veterans in jobs, adding to the local economy, and saving the states potentially millions in unemployment benefits. To do all of this, the Foundation needs your support. Please consider giving back to those who were willing to risk their lives for you and their country.

Matthew’s Crossing Food, Compassion, Dignity and Hope Article Michelle Guerrero | Photography Provided by Matthew’s Crossing

A

client of Matthew’s Crossing Food Bank was determined to pay it forward. She spoke little English, and at the time, the food bank didn’t have a Spanish speaker on staff. But with a little patience and creativity her message was understood. She worked on a farm that grew broccoli and she wanted to support the program that helped support her and her family. On several occasions she delivered big boxes of fresh broccoli to be shared with other clients of the food bank. “The neatest thing for us is when we see a client want to give back,” says Heather Heimsoth, the executive director of the program. “And it’s very hard to come by fresh produce.” Matthew’s Crossing is a Chandler-based non-profit organization that provides assistance for East Valley individuals and families. They offer emergency food boxes designed to feed a family for three to five days. Anyone in need can present a photo ID to register with the food bank for a monthly food and infant box if needed. 20

Chandler Lifestyle | November 2014

Last year Matthew’s Crossing served more than 43,000 people. Arizona is tied as one of the worst states in the nation for childhood hunger according to statistics published by the United Food Bank. One in four children don’t know when their next meal is coming, and neither do one in five adults and one in seven seniors. Currently, 40 percent of Matthew’s Crossing clients are 18 years of age or younger. They have a small staff of one full-time and two part-time employees, but are supported by many volunteers. There is a core

group of about 60, but including seasonal volunteers, about 150 people come to sort food, pack boxes and assist clients. “We’ve grown so much and just acquired an additional 1,300 square feet of space. When the space next door opened up it was just too good to pass up,” says Heimsoth. They plan to use the additional space for training, food drives and storage overflow, but more importantly, they want to eventually offer classes and seminars to the public. Although they are still formatting what the programs will look like, they envision having resume building opportunities, tutoring for kids, immunization education and other health and wellness classes. “We want to help break the cycle of hunger through education,” says Heimsoth. Their services are always in demand around the holidays, and with Thanksgiving just around the corner, they are already revving up for the season. In year’s past, some clients would sleep overnight outside their doors to make sure they could

get a box of food for their family. In order to make things easier for their clients, they now start passing out vouchers for Thanksgiving food boxes as early as October. The Saturday before the holiday, crews set to work at a church down the street called the Praise and Worship Center, who’s leaders graciously donate the use of their parking lot for the day. Last year the community came together as off-duty officers donated their time to direct traffic. PayPal employees helped pass out food, such as stuffing, cranberries and peas, they procured in a friendly competition. And Walmart employees passed turkeys and pies from the back of a truck thanks to a Walmart grant. Clients who have received vouchers drive through to pick up their food. Last year 600 families were given boxes on this one day, which is just 200 families shy of their entire first year of giving in 2001. While the food bank is open to everyone, their holiday distribution (Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas) is reserved for those already registered in the program. “Our Thanksgiving distribution is for existing clients only, due to lack of funding to expand it to the general public,” says Heimsoth. M at t he w ’s Crossing’s website is full of inspiration for how to get involved, support their new building project, start a food drive and volunteer. But when people ask Heimsoth how they can best support the program she tells them that they truly need funding. “While the food donations are important, a lot of people don’t know that we can purchase food at just 12 cents per pound,” Heimsoth explains. “With financial donations our buying power stretches so much further. When someone donates $30, we can literally sometimes quadruple the amount of food that the public could purchase for us.” A photo of a proud birthday boy name Zade is posted on their Facebook page. Instead of asking for video games or a bike for his birthday, he passed up the idea of gifts this year and asked for food donations instead. Thanks to his big heart, this young boy donated 285 pounds of food to the program. Nonprofit organizations aren’t just asking for funding, or in this case food, they are actually providing people with opportunities to do good in the world and to rise to their higher self.

Roy’s An Amazing Culinary Experience Article Kathleen Blair | Photography Provided

B

ack in the 1980’s there was a chef who grew up in Japan and moved to Hawaii. From there he came to the mainland to attend culinary school. He opened up a restaurant in Los Angeles, but it just wasn’t fulfilling his vision of the food and atmosphere he wanted to project. So he moved back to Hawaii and in 1988 he opened up Roy’s in Honolulu. Chef Roy Yamaguchi built his reputation on blending classic techniques with that of the Pacific Rim flavors, and created a new dimension to fine dining. Now, years later, there are 28 Roy’s locations around the world, two being in Arizona. Taking Dining To Another Level

I met with Chef Patrick “Red” Bray, who has been with the Roy Restaurant establishment for 10 years having graduated from Le Cordon Bleu Culinary in Scottsdale. He started with Roy’s as a prep cook and then a line cook and quickly stepped into the roll as sushi cook before becoming a chef. Having trained under Chef Roy personally, Chef Red is able to continue the vision and tradition of the master chef and infuse into his own culinary creations you’ll also find on the menu. “I enjoy making my food taste and look good so my guests leave with lingering memories.” states Chef Red. Chef Red has been passionate about food all his life. He grew up in a family that emphasized family meals. He has fond memories of him preparing meals with his dad where they’d experiment with different foods and recipes. He also loved that they would eat dinner with the family every evening. 22

Chandler Lifestyle | November 2014

I asked him how he got the nickname “Red.” In his youth he was in a punk rock band and had a long red goatee. And, the name just stuck. Not Just a Meal – It’s a Dining Experience

I started my tasting with the mini surf and turf. It was a miniature 2½ oz. filet wrapped with bacon and cooked perfectly. It was tender and absolutely delicious. Accompanying it was a large grilled tiger shrimp that was also cooked splendidly and served with garlic potato puree. The flavor of the sauce added to the pleasure of the seafood. The Roy’s classic lobster pot stickers were equally enjoyable and a creative change to traditional pot stickers. Next, I thoroughly enjoyed sampling the Misoyaki Cured Butterfish, an Alaskan black cod with sweet ginger and a wasabi butter sauce with Furikake black rice. There are layers of flavors salty, coconut and sweet - in each bite. I can see why it’s one of the more popular items on the menu. One of Chef Red’s creations is the sea bass, sautéed spinach, sun dried tomatoes with Borsim cheese tortellini, baby heirloom tomatoes and spicy lemon glass in a Beurre blanc sauce. Incredibly good! For dessert, I highly recommend the chocolate cake soufflé. It’s absolutely heavenly. The answer is always “yes” if you have food challenges. Chef Red loves to create a culinary dish for you based on your food needs. There also is a sushi menu, a vegetation menu and a gluten free menu.

Ohana - A Family Effort

Everyone at Roy’s Chandler has the same enthusiasm and willingness to please from the servers to management to the kitchen team. The crew refers to themselves as Ohana which means family in Hawaiian. They are all willing to do over and beyond what is expected to make your dining experience a memorable one. Managing Partner TJ Sieker has been with Roy’s Restaurants for seven years at multiple locations. Originally from Indiana, he studied Restaurant Management at Purdue University and worked as a line cook at O’Charleys. He loves that even though they are a corporation there is a tight knit family atmosphere. “Our hospitality sets us apart as our wait staff knows it is a pleasure to serve our diners,” explains Sieker. The restaurant itself seats 250 including the patio. There is a wonderful aquarium that welcomes you when you walk in. To the left is a nice size lounge with tables and a long bar that has two TV’s for catching a game or news. The dining area has low lighting, booths and nicely positioned tables. Local businesses enjoy two meeting rooms that seat 40 and have flat screens if needed. I can see why Roy’s Chandler received the Taste of Chandler award for “Best Asian Inspired Cuisine.” The food is delicious and pricing reasonable. In fact, you may want to stop by at Aloha Hour to taste their $6 Monday Martini or for one of their Sunday Suppers. Everybody’s Auto Buyer Article Kory Kilmer | Photography Provided

E

verybody knows that selling a car can be a hassle. Between creating and maintaining an internet post, fielding phone calls at odd hours, and setting up times to show the vehicle only to be given an obnoxiously low-ball offer if they even show up at all, the whole process can be one big waste of time. Chandler’s own Jim McMichael, on the other hand, has an unwavering passion for the automobile industry, which he has been a part of for nearly 40 years. He has played numerous roles in all of that time in the car business, and while he sees a lot of good, he also witnesses many practices that continue to make him shake his head in disbelief. Through those experiences came the inspiration to create his own company, which would be based on honesty, integrity and advocacy for his clients who were not comfortable navigating the waters of buying and selling cars. The idea for Everybody’s Auto Buyer was born. “I started this business with the belief that the consumer needed somebody on their side,” says McMichael. “Dealers and brokers are commission-based and all about the bottom line. What we become is an agent who represents our clients and protects their interests. We use our knowledge of the industry to help them obtain a good deal. But more than that, we also help them save the time, and avoid the hassles, the frustrations, and the aggravations that go along with the process.” Everybody’s Auto Buyer offers two different services to its clients. For those who are in the market for a new automobile, McMichael and his team will sit down for a consultation and get an understanding for exactly what their client is seeking. Be it new or used, or a private or commercial seller, Everybody’s Auto Buyer will do all of the grunt work in finding the best deal for their clients, including leads on financing if needed. For their clients who are looking to sell their cars, Everybody’s Auto Buyer will take care of almost the entire process. They will advertise the vehicle, field all of the inquiries regarding the vehicle, show the vehicle to prospec-

24

Chandler Lifestyle | November 2014

tive buyers, and even negotiate the priced based on the guidelines previously set by the seller. But because they act as a representative to the owner, any deal remains a private transaction. “We are not buying and reselling like brokers do, where then there

would be taxes, responsibilities, liabilities, dealer fees and all things of that sort. What remains is a private sale between our client (the seller) and the buyer,” explains McMichael. Beyond the basic inconveniences, Safety is often cited as the biggest concerns that people point to when it comes to not wanting to sell their own car. Many are not keen to the idea of having strangers come to their home. Everybody’s Auto Sale prevents this by taking possession of the vehicle and storing it on their private lot. Once clients sign on with Everybody’s Auto Buyer, they are no longer a part of the process, other than every week they get an update to detail how many people have called about the vehicle or have asked to come out and look at it. They believe it is their job to alleviate all of the frustrations, headaches and associated risks, and make it a great experience for everyone involved. “I have been in this business since 1977 because I love cars, but I just don’t like the way the industry seems to be going” says McMichael. “For most of us the second largest investment we make during our lifetime is our cars. The delivery process is supposed to be a great occasion. We are here to make sure it is.”

Everybody’s Auto Buyer offers their services across the Valley. Anyone looking for more information on the services offered by Everybody’s Auto Buyer, including the most up-to-date listing of the privately owned vehicles that they are currently representing, should visit the company’s website at EverybodysAutoBuyer.com, or by calling them directly at 602.918.5090.

Barro’s Pizza: More than 50 years of honoring family tradition Locally-owned business gives back to schools, youth sports teams and food banks Article Meghann Finn Sepulveda | Photography provided by The Barro Family

I

t was the original homemade pizza recipe created by Italian-born family matriarch Angelina Barro that inspired the Barro family to open their first restaurant in Chicago in 1961. Today, more than 50 years later, the Barro family owns and operates 35 locations in Arizona. The Barro’s aren’t just dishing out great pizza. The family regularly gives back to the community by supporting school fundraisers, youth sports and local food banks. They are keeping their Italian upbringing alive by truly helping the less fortunate.

A Family Affair

Together, Ken Barro of Chandler, his two brothers Bruce and Mike, and their parents have owned and operated Barro’s Pizza in the Valley since 1980 when the family opened the first location in Mesa. “Growing up on Taylor Street, now known as Little Italy in Chicago, my father and his brother, along with family and friends, grew up enjoying my grandmother’s pizza,” says Ken Barro. “My grandmother was instrumental in the creation of Barro’s Pizza.” 26

Chandler Lifestyle | November 2014

The recipe for the pizza sauce is a family original. “It’s a combination of tangy and sweet, and the crust is in between deep dish and hand tossed,” Barro says. “Our menu has expanded and in addition to pizza, we also offer wings, salads, sandwiches and pasta.” Supporting Local Education

As children of educators, the Barro brothers valued the importance of higher learning at an early age. Barro’s Pizza has a long-standing history of supporting local schools and Valley youth. Barro’s Pizza locations in Chandler 1880 S Alma School Rd. Chandler, AZ 480.917.0077 950 E Riggs Rd Chandler, AZ 480.895.2555 For a complete listing of all Barro’s Pizza Valley locations, menus and specials, visit BarrosPizza.com.

“Education is very near and dear to our heart,” Barro says. “We try very hard to do anything that is asked of us.” From sponsoring PTO nights, to hosting fundraisers, supporting sports teams and making financial contributions, Barro’s Pizza is always looking for ways to give back. Now through December 7, and for the third consecutive year, Barro’s Pizza and Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway gives one local student a $10,000 check to be used towards college tuition. The contest is available to Arizona residents, 18 years and

older. Entries can be submitted online, via Facebook or by texting BARROS to 737737. One lucky winner will be chosen at random from the submitted entries. Aiding in the Hunger Fight

In addition to supporting education, the Barro family has a natural connection with feeding the hungry. “Feeding people is a pretty basic thing,” Barro says. “It was something that weighed heavily on our hearts.” This December Barro’s Pizza will once again participate in their annual Holiday Hunger Fight for St. Mary’s Food Bank. “The event will take place on the first Tuesday of December,” Barro says. “Every single penny that comes in to a Barro’s Pizza will be donated to St. Mary’s Food Bank.” Last year the event generated $100,000 during what is typically a critical time for needy families. Customers are encouraged to dine at any Barro’s Pizza to help reach this year’s goal of exceeding $150,000. “As a result of this fundraiser, the money equated to 800,000 meals,” Barro says. “This year we hope our efforts will raise enough for 1 million meals.” Keeping the Tradition Alive

While growing up, the Barro’s were always made aware of the less fortunate. “Our parents helped us understand that there were people who didn’t have as much as we did,” Barro says. “Giving back to the community is just natural for us.” He hopes other successful business owners do the same. “I hope that anyone who experiences success in life can look at what they can do for the better with that success,” he says. In addition to operating and managing locations, Barro also spends time volunteering as a coach. As a father to five adult children ranging in ages from 18 to 30, Barro is now training the next generation of the Barro family on the business and giving back to the community. “It seems like the right thing to do,” he adds. “It’s our family mantra.”

‘The Office That Gives’ Impacting the World, One Mouth at a Time Article Seth Conaway | Photography Provided

I

n the fall of 2012, Chandler orthodontist Dr. Tom Chamberlain recognized a unique opportunity to give his 16-year-old son, Kohler, a life experience he would never forget. “I wanted him to see what the world can look like,” Chamberlain explains. “I have a friend named Chet Jenkins, a general dentist in the area, who’s affiliated with Hope Arising (an organization which offers support and care for children orphaned or made vulnerable by disease, war, natural disaster and extreme poverty). He took a group of volunteers to Ethiopia, and what started as a water project extended into a dental project. They were helping little towns and communities that are really, really destitute: no electricity, no running water. They had to walk 10 miles just to get to the nearest water source. I mean, these were just horrible conditions. They were able to get water to the town, and we went in and did some dental work with them.” Chamberlain describes creating a sort of make-shift office, basically going into a room, putting a plastic chair down, a bucket on the side, and pulling teeth all day. “We pulled 1200 teeth in a week,” he says. “It was just crazy, because there was so much infection and so much need. It changed my son’s life. He’s now serving a mission down in Argentina, helping the people in Mendoza.” For Chamberlain, a Nevada native who relocated to Arizona with his family twelve years ago, the passion for helping others is as ingrained as his love of the arts. It comes naturally to him, motivates him, and inspires his work in every capacity.

28

Chandler Lifestyle | November 2014

“For the past few years I’ve been so blessed with the success of the business and as an orthodontist,” Chamberlain explains. “I’ve really wanted to give back somehow, to make an impact in the lives of the people I come into contact with. So part of that is just making the experience of having braces a more pleasant experience, that this isn’t just a place where people come and get their teeth straight, but that they walk out a better person than when they came in.” Chamberlain cites several reasons why his business ethics exceed the norm. He believes that getting to know each and every patient individually is a key part of this, and that being on time for scheduled appointments and taking an active interest in the lives of those he serves creates an atmosphere of genuine caring and compassion. Giving back to the Chandler community is a top priority as well. “We continually look for ways to be part of the community and to make an impact on people’s lives,” Chamberlain says. “That’s really one of our main goals: making people’s lives better, both in their experience in the office and how we give to the community. And if there’s anything I want to be known for in my life, it’s to be someone who gives back.” A music-theatre major in college, Chamberlain toured Eastern Europe, Russia and much of the continental United States with his wife, Tamara, before attending Oregon Health Sciences University Dental School in Portland, Oregan.

Though he found his true calling in orthodonture, his love of the arts never waned. His dental practice, which includes two East Valley locations as well as two affiliate offices in the West Valley, consistently donates to high school performing arts programs as well as local theatres and the Chandler Children’s Choir. “It’s amazing how much talent there is in this community,” says Chamberlain. “That’s the best part about living and working in Chandler: seeing the people in the community and knowing the good things that they’re doing.” Recently Chamberlain, members of his office staff, wife Tamara and daughter Kelsey, spent a week in Costa Rica, where they volunteered at a local orphanage and provided much needed dental work to area children and their families. Chamberlain explains that the impact the trip made on Kelsey was akin to that of her brother. “One of the things that really tears at you is the non-access to care,” Chamberlain remembers. “There’s not much you can do about it. You’re not there long enough, so you don’t have the opportunity to really change things.” Chamberlain does, however, make a lasting change in the lives of the less fortunate in his own community. Chamberlain Orthodontics sponsors a Christmas “Giving Tree” where clients donate gifts and necessities to needy children and their families. A more unique approach to community outreach takes place in early November in the form of a “candy buyback” program. “The kids bring in their excess Halloween candy (or candy they

shouldn’t eat) and we weigh it, give them a dollar per pound, and then they’re entered into a raffle,” Chamberlain explains. “We take that candy and give it to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where they give the candy away at birthday parties. For the raffle, we give two $100 donations to the winners’ teachers. It’s a win for the teacher, the community, the children’s hospital, and,” Chamberlain says with a laugh, “we don’t have so many broken brackets from the candy my younger patients shouldn’t be eating.” Creating smiles may be all in a day’s work for Chamberlain and the dedicated staff at Chamberlain Orthodontics. It’s clear, however, that their passion and integrity are distinctive and that the smiles they create extend far beyond the clinic’s walls. They truly are “the office that gives,” and a feather in Chandler’s cap. For more information on Dr. Tom Chamberlain and Chamberlain Orthodontics, visit their website at SmileStraight.com.

Parting Thoughts

Gratitude Words Todd B. Natenberg

T

he middle aged woman in the checkout line looked at me in shock. The clerk could not believe it. “Are you serious?” they both said to me - nearly in sync. “Yes,” I replied with a smile. “I will pay for her merchandise. How much is it?” “$30,” the clerk replied, assuming the amount would deter me from doing what I love most: helping others. “No problem,” I answered. “Include it in my order.” “God bless you,” the woman said. As she beamed from ear to ear, she reached out to hug me. “God bless you, too,” I said, appreciating her appreciation, accepting her gratitude. When I first heard the clerk tell the woman that without identification, he would not accept her check for her items at Wal-Mart, I did not hesitate. Many may say I was crazy, but this was not the first time I paid for another’s order and it certainly would not be the last. While I have no doubt the anonymous woman went on to spread the tale of my good deed and listeners would react in shock, perhaps having their faith in mankind renewed, let it be understood: It was I who was rewarded. When was the last time you helped a stranger in need? When was the last time you truly appreciated the extraordinary things and people in your life? When was the last time you were grateful to live in a country where you have the freedom to succeed, to fail and to disagree without being punished for it? Let me propose we all take a breath, smell the roses, and express true gratitude for the beauty in the world—no matter where we are personally. To do that, I’d like to offer Todd’s top five tips:

1. Recall out loud 10 good things that happened during the day every night before you go to bed. 2. List three things you are grateful for 3. Every time you see members of the military in uniform, shake their hand, thank them for what they do and say, “Be safe.” 4. When you eat at restaurants without servers, such as Subway, or even McDonald’s, when you finish your meal, before exiting, approach the cashier and say “thank you” to all the workers behind the counter. 5. When someone tailgates you while driving, don’t slam on the brakes or switch lanes with a dirty look. Simply switch lanes and let them pass. Life is short, friends. Life is beautiful. We all have challenges. We all have obstacles. But if we think that one moment will eliminate all our problems, we are certainly missing the big picture. There are no ordinary moments. As the proud father of now one-year-old twins whom I love more than anything, I know that better than anyone.
