Love Local

Love Local
While we teeter between the chill of January and the excitement of spring, let’s take a moment to love what surrounds us. Whether it’s a cozy game night at home, a shared bottle of wine around the fire, or a thoughtful word, loving local means cherishing what’s near—our families, friends and community. We’ve always believed that what we can do together is greater than what we can do apart.

“Love local” extends to businesses too. Our front cover showcases two of Columbia’s finest: Buchroeders Jewelers and The Candy Factory with their delicious chocolates. Whether you’re expressing your love with dazzling diamonds or indulging in sweet treats, these local icons offer timeless gifts to make Valentine’s Day truly special.
We’re also thrilled to introduce Trail Stop Brewery, Columbia’s newest spot for food, fun and community, opening next month. With plans for a fun patio, lively brewery, wood-fired pizza, and pickleball courts, Trail Stop Brewery is bound to be a new local favorite.
For those who enjoy getting creative, we’ve included a delicious salad and a delightful DIY Valentine’s project in this issue. There’s something truly heartwarming about handmade keepsakes, and this Valentine’s project is perfect for crafting heartfelt cards that your loved ones will treasure.
With that, we encourage you to “love local” not only this month, but all year round!
Warmly,

Local surgeons and beer enthusiasts open Trail Stop Brewery

Columbia’s food and drink scene continues to grow as the highly anticipated Trail Stop Brewery sets its sights on opening in March.
Owners William Kinney and Robert Zitsch have been friends and beer aficionados for many years and decided on starting

“… why not create a space where people can just come and get together.”
Trail Stop Brewery based on timing, location and their love of beer-making.
“You drive by this place and you know it’s the perfect spot,” Kinney says. “So as I kind of look back, ‘Why am I doing this?’ right? One of the things that I like best is entertaining … So why not create a space where people can just come and get together.”
The brewery is located next to the MKT Natural and Fitness Trail at the Scott Boulevard access point, Jay Dix Station. Their logo pays homage to the previous railbed of the MKT railroad that is now the trail. The location provides an excellent stop for families and individuals looking to quench their thirst with a beer or grab a bite to eat while cycling, running or walking.
Kinney is a third-generation ear, nose and throat surgeon, who recently retired, and Zitsch is a head and neck cancer surgeon. After meeting through work, one of the hobbies they bonded over was
brewing beer. Kinney has been brewing beer for 15 years and wanted to offer a brewery unlike the four others already in town. He doesn’t look at Trail Stop as a competitor, but rather a way to find collaboration and community in the beer scene.
“Logboat’s done a really good job of becoming a community landmark, a community supporter,” Kinney says. “They’ve just really integrated with the community, I guess, and I think that’s going to be important and that would be my ultimate goal, right? Is to be able to give back to the city and the community where we can. I think that’s going to grow as we get our processes underway.”
The two paired with Brian Watson, a brewmaster and founder and creator of SmartBrew, to assist in creating the recipes for the beers on tap. Watson’s invention, SmartBrew, is an automated commercial brewing technology that guarantees quality and

consistency in the process of brewing. Trail Stop will use SmartBrew for all of their brewing needs, which due to their space and capacity on site could be, at most, 60 barrels a year–the equivalent of 19,000 pints. Though Kinney doesn’t anticipate reaching that number, it places Trail Stop firmly in the category of a nanobrewery, leaving much room to grow.
Kinney and Zitsch wanted to have fun with creating the beers’ names, choosing to tie in their health care experience with names such as Doctor’s Order, a 6% ABV porter; Double Dose, an 8% double IPA; and Tincture of Hops, a 7% American IPA, among at least four other options. The brewery will also start a beer club, where members can pay extra for a special, laser-engraved cup to use each time they stop by.
In addition to beer and simple cocktails, a major part of Trail Stop Brewing will include the second location of Marceline Pizza Company. They will craft wood-fired pizza, Chicago-style deep dish pizza, among other menu offerings. Andrew Welsh, president of Marceline Pizza Company in
“My biggest fear is we’re going to be too busy and not be able to keep up with demand, but as Drew says, that’s a good problem to have.”

Marceline, Missouri, and his wife Carrie, who is a wine sommelier and the vice president of the company, will be the executive chef and social media director, respectively.
Inside the new building, Trail Stop accommodates 100 individuals; with the outside patio that faces the Scott Boulevard roundabout, the capacity rises to 140. A hostess will greet you inside the door for seating, and QR codes on the tables will allow for a hands-free model for ordering food and drinks.
“My biggest fear is we’re going to be too busy and not be able to keep up with demand, but as Drew says, that’s a good problem to have,” Kinney says.
And who can forget the third component of Trail Stop Brewery? Pickleball. Outside of the building are four pickleball courts with large, direct court lighting and will open at 7 a.m. for those looking to get in an early game. The courts are a great local option for tournaments as well, as the grassy hill leading from Brushwood Lake Road to the courts provides the opportunity for stadium seating for spectators. Those wanting to play will need to reserve online. The brewery will have open play hours, as well.
Trail Stop Brewery is located at 3901 Brushwood Lake Road. For more information, visit trailstopbrewery.com.

BUCHROEDERS JEWELERS OFFERS TIMELESS GIFTS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY AND BEYOND
ARTICLE BY BRIAN SULLIVAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH JANE SHORTHOSE

Diamonds and gemstones are always a dazzling way to express your love for that special someone, as well as cherished family and friends. As the season of love quickly approaches, it’s helpful to get a head start on gifts you will want to buy this Valentine’s Day. Buchroeders Jewelers has you covered for Feb. 14 and for all the special dates you want to celebrate this year and for years to come.
“Timeless diamond jewelry is always a wonderful choice for Valentine’s Day,” says Seth Lindenbusch, general manager of Buchroeders Jewelers.
“Diamond stud earrings, tennis bracelets, and pendant or in-line necklaces are not only elegant but also become cherished heirlooms that can be passed down through generations.“
Buchroeders radiates love for the community by creating happiness and memories for those you hold dear. The business dedicates itself to clients’ special occasions; as a long-standing institution, it is a reliable and trusted source for crafting brilliant jewelry for those you love.
“Buchroeders has been part of the Columbia community since 1896, and this city feels like home in every sense of the word,” Lindenbusch says. “Over the years, we’ve built relationships that span generations, with clients returning for life’s milestones and trusting us as their jeweler for life.”
With the responsibility of ensuring quality jewelry for clients, the Columbia jewelers want to continue working towards being the most innovative in the jewelry industry. The team works each day with their philosophy top of mind: put the client first, always.
“Being in Columbia means upholding that legacy while continually striving to exceed expectations. We’re deeply grateful to be part of a community that values connection and tradition while incorporating innovation as much as we do.”
into stunning engagement rings, making them available to the public.”
Lab-grown diamonds account for approximately 50% of diamonds sold in the United States. This means natural diamond prices have lowered, making them an exceptional value. These rare prices are not anticipated to last long, allowing buyers a brief window for an exciting, rare purchase.
Being in Columbia means upholding that legacy while continually striving to exceed expectations.
Diamonds are the pinnacle of a Valentine’s Day gift. This year, Buchroeders is thrilled to offer a new, timeless diamond collection for clients.
“We’re incredibly excited to showcase our exclusive Giant Diamonds, Tiny Prices collection,” Lindenbusch says. “This unique offering features spectacular, large natural diamonds that our owner, Mills Menser, has carefully curated over the years. Recently, we’ve set these diamonds
Whether purchasing a present for Valentine’s Day, a celebratory milestone or simply to say, “I love you,” Buchroeders’s commitment to their clients extends from the moment they walk in the door to the smile that accompanies their gift, and the care provided for years to come. Instead of predetermining what their clients are seeking, the team members listen to their preferences and assist them with their overall needs and goals for their purchase. This begins with the store’s selection process for its in-store inventory, which is directly tailored to the customers’ preferences and trends. If a client doesn’t find something suiting their needs, then the store offers a custom design process utilizing advanced CAD technology. Jesse Miller, the master jeweler at Buchroeders, then makes your designs a reality.
With clients at the heart of business, Buchroeders stays ahead of the times in offering the most seamless customer experience possible.
“While our commitment to exceptional service has remained constant, the way we serve clients has evolved significantly. The jewelry industry can

often be archaic, holding tightly to traditional practices, but at Buchroeders, we’ve chosen to evolve with the times,” Lindenbusch says. “As early adopters of new technology, we’ve embraced tools like our website, brdiamonds. com, and automated notifications to enhance the customer experience. This forward-thinking approach allows our century-old business to remain relevant and innovative, ensuring we continue to meet the needs of a modern, dynamic community while honoring the relationships we’ve built over generations.”
In addition to its responsibility to clients, Buchroeders also dedicates itself to engaging in opportunities of connection
with other local businesses and throughout the Columbia community. The store loves donating to local charities and participating in events.
“We’re proud to be part of downtown Columbia, right in the heart of the city on Broadway. The community’s love for local businesses is incredible, from participating in events like Small Business Saturday to celebrating the uniqueness each business brings,” Lindenbusch says. “We strive to give back by supporting charities and causes we believe in, collaborating with other local businesses, and creating shared opportunities through events. This relationship with the Columbia community fuels our passion and commitment every day.”

Painting Joy Into People’s Homes

TO MY
Valentine
ARTICLE BY LEANN PARKER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Create timeless keepsakes for those you love with this easy DIY Valentine Stationary. There is something special and reminiscent of our earlier years of creating homemade valentines for those special in our lives. While stores are filled with Valentine candy, cards and gifts, the thoughtfulness and time put into to a handmade card holds a different meaning. Words are the things we treasure most, so let those you care about most know how you treasure them this Valentine’s Day.
What you will need
• Kitchen Knife
• Red or Russet Potato (for heart)
• Romaine Lettuce (for rose)
• Acrylic Paint
• Paint Brush
• Blank Envelopes
• Blank Cards
• Heart Template (SilvertoothHome.com/blog/DIY-stationery)
• Hand Lettering Template (SilvertoothHome.com/blog/DIY-stationery)
• Light Box

Instructions for Heart Prints
1. Cut the potato in half. Using a small knife, carefully carve a heart shape onto the flat side of the potato. Carve freestyle or use the free template under “DIY Stationery” on the blog at silvertoothhome.com/ blog/diy-stationery. Even when using the template, each carving will come out as unique art like the ones you see here.
2. With a paint brush, apply paint to the heart shape on the potato.
3. Stamp the potato heart onto blank stationery.
4. Set aside until completely dry.

Instructions for Rose Prints
1. Cut the end off of romaine lettuce. Set leaves aside and use the stem.
2. Using a paintbrush, apply paint to the lettuce stem.
3. Stamp the lettuce “rose” onto blank stationery.
4. Set aside until completely dry.
Once your stationery is completely dry it is time to add beautiful Valentine’s Day lettering. If you have beautiful handwriting then draw free hand. If you’re not as confident use a light box and my hand lettering template (found on the blog at SilvertoothHome.com/blog/DIYstationery) to transfer lettering onto the stationery. To do this, first lay the hand lettering template on a light box with the stationery on top. Then trace the hand lettering onto the stationery with a pen or marker of choice.
