ere comes 2016! Wow! It seems as if 2015 went by in a flash. It did. We started Conejo Valley Lifestyle in 2015. Work began in April and by the end of June we had put the premier August issue to bed. This is issue #6 and thanks to our writers, led by our Editor Tracy Marcynzsyn, our readers seem to love us. Our advertisers—bless them—have shown their love by supporting our editorial mission with their outreach to our readers. So what does this mean to us (and possibly you) and how we view the start of another year? Reinvention: 2015 was the start of that process and 2016 will bring it to full flower. Frankly, when we started this magazine we were almost forced into entrepreneurship by an economy and culture with little to no respect for experience and knowledge (30 years regarding anything and everything print media and 15 years of digital media). Best thing that ever happened! After wasting time fighting the system, we jumped outside the box and we haven’t looked back. The inspiration behind this line of thought on reinvention is an article by Steve Lopez, published in the Los Angeles Times. Steve is probably the best human interest journalist in the U.S. The article was about a 50-year-old man who lost his job of more than 25 years. He had worked and prospered building C-17s for the Air Force. The plant had recently closed, forcing him to endure a painful reinvention process. We certainly related to this kind of setback. We hope 2016 will be his year to move away from the old and embrace the new. And here we are. This year will be filled with articles on the many positive activities in our community. The Conejo Valley will continue to be one of the best places to live and work in the U.S. Since we started this magazine, we have met an incredible number of people whose families are multi-generational residents of the area. Why not? Lots of reasons, take your pick…..good people, clean air, great business opportunities for anyone who has the energy and vision, great schools, beautiful scenery…the list goes on. May 2016 bring you and yours good health and prosperity. Cheers,

s a Civil Rights activist in the 1960s and 70s, Robert Bland learned early on that he had a desire to help others make a difference in their lives. Some 50 years later, now as head of Newbury Park’s Conejo Compassion Coalition, Bland has remained true to his early mission “to heal a broken world, one person, one community, and one village at a time.” Throughout his busy career at the Port Hueneme Naval Base and as a part-time counselor and instructor at Oxnard and Ventura colleges, Bland was driven to help others. He initially coordinated the CROP Hunger Walk through Church World Services to raise funds to feed the hungry and later became active in the Homeless Shelter Program in the Conejo Valley, having spent the past 20 years managing those efforts. When the devastating earthquake and tsunami struck Southeast Asia in 2004, Bland wanted to help. He pulled together a coalition of friends to raise funds and traveled to Sri Lanka to do whatever they could in the wake of the disaster that claimed more than 230,000 lives in 14 countries. The group was so moved by what they experienced, they vowed to continue their CONTINUED > efforts wherever they saw the need.

CCC TO THE RESCUE

The all-volunteer Conejo Compassion Coalition (CCC) was established as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) in 2006. Today, under Bland’s direction, the organization provides assistance and financial support for poverty and disaster relief efforts worldwide. Moreover, CCC promotes awareness of poverty issues and solutions. Since its founding, it has helped people in California, Texas, New Orleans, Mexico, Africa and Nepal, with volunteers paying their own way when traveling to provide on-site help. Locally, CCC works with Manna, Food Bank, Sunrise Rotary Club in Westlake, St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, Church of the Epiphany, Friends of Barnabus and The Greater Contribution. Internationally, CCC has ties with the International Rescue Committee, the Catholic Church’s Caritas Internationalis, the Red Cross and many others; however, CCC’s emphasis is on helping those who may be overlooked or underserved by government agencies or larger charities. “We fill a gap to combat hunger, poverty and other endemic problems we encounter, wherever we may find them,” explains

Bland. For example, one of CCC's current projects in Haiti includes rebuilding some of the 250,000 homes lost in the monstrous 2010 earthquake. Working with local authorities and other relief groups, building a home in Haiti costs $8,500 and takes a month. CCC’s project model was initially to build houses and other structures in areas hit hard with natural disasters. However, over the years, it has evolved and found much greater 16

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | January 2016

and more lasting success in enabling the local residents to help themselves. “The local residents do the heavy lifting and take prideful ownership in building or rebuilding their communities,” says Bland, though CCC provides much of the funding and guidance for projects. He says self-sufficiency is key to ensuring ongoing, positive results. Nowhere has this been more evident than in CCC’s current efforts in Uganda. Villagers in an impoverished area are building new homes, and with CCC’s direction and support, they are also developing clean water facilities, agricultural programs, schools, student scholarships and micro loans for women to create new businesses. The crown jewel of the Ugandan project is the building of a full-scale medical clinic. CCC's many challenges include generating funds to support their efforts. Bland says donors and volunteers are needed to help spread the word and raise funds. A recent presentation to students at Howard University in Washington, D.C. yielded an enthusiastic and willing group interested in fundraising and building awareness for CCC. “We’re just placeholders for the next generation, who will do what they can to tackle the problems of poverty around the world,” Bland says. “We must involve our young people to ensure our future.” Contributing to CCC is investing in efforts that are meaningful and accountable, says Bland, noting that CCC is somewhat unique in that donors are more in control

and aware of how and where their dollars are being spent. Other poverty and relief groups are not typically as financially transparent. Among CCC’s most productive fundraising effort is its annual Fourth of July celebration and in February, CCC will celebrate its 10th Anniversary with a fundraiser gala at the Palm Garden Hotel in Newbury Park. Bland has spent much of his life giving to those less fortunate and supporting efforts locally and around the globe to improve the human condition.

“We are all in this together,” says Bland. “We are all family. Collectively, we are a part of a much larger movement to change the world for the better. It’s my passion to help wherever and whenever I can.” Bland welcomes anyone interested in joining CCC to learn more at ConejoCompassion.org.

Our Windows Have A Story To Tell, Shouldn’t Yours? Kathleen and I can’t believe it has been more than 15 years since we started American Vision Windows. It all started with a home improvement project turned “bad.” As owners of American Vision Windows, it was our personal experience that led us to our life’s work and to create what ultimately would become one of the nations largest window installation companies and the largest in all of California. At the time we were living in a two-story house full of aluminum windows. The temperature difference between upstairs and downstairs could vary by as much as 20 degrees. We were also the proud parents of a newborn baby boy! As new parents we were very concerned about the constant draft near his crib. While I was at work, Kathleen started to look for a solution. We started the process of educating ourselves on the varieties of windows and installers. We discovered that not all were created equal and learned about the benefits of dual-pane windows and how they could help with energy costs, noise reductions and provide us a more secure home. The information was confusing since the salesmen and installers seemed to contradict each other, but ultimately Kathleen and I agreed upon a type of window and began the installation process.

Unfortunately, what should have been a pleasant and exciting experience for us, turned out to be a complete “nightmare”. While caring for our newborn son, we had to deal with 3 months of contractors showing up late or not at all, having our calls ignored and being lied to about everything from what kind of windows we were “really” getting, to when they would be installed. Needless to say, we were not happy customers. From this unfortunate experience, we wondered why shouldn’t the process of buying and installing windows be anything other than positive. It was from this perspective that American Vision Windows was born. American Vision Windows has grown to one of the largest window sales and installation companies in the nation and number one in all of California. Our growth can be directly attributed to the motto we live by: “revolutionizing the home improvement industry…one customer at a time.” Here at American Vision Windows we are dedicated to keeping the promises we make, listening to our customers needs, providing personalized service and going that extra mile to insure that you return to us for all of your home improvement needs. Thank you for taking the time to read our story. We look forward to meeting you and sharing more of the products and service we are so proud of. Please visit our showroom in Simi Valley.

Healthy Lifestyle Known as a “doctor’s doctor” with a caring and gentle attitude, Assil’s philosophy is to treat all patients in an ethical, compassionate and competent manner while helping to find the root of their pain and put them back on the road to health. He shares some insights on pain management with Conejo Valley Lifestyle and encourages anyone who suffers from a painful condition to seek out a qualified pain management doctor who can help ease their pain.

Q. What is pain management? A. Pain management, or pain medicine,

Dr. Kamyar Assil

is a growing medical specialty dedicated to treating acute, sub-acute and chronic pain disorders.

MANAGING PAIN Q & A with Dr. Kamyar Assil ARTICLE TRACY MARCYNZSYN

A

nyone who has dealt with recurring or chronic pain understands the importance of obtaining pain relief. And when it comes to pain, Dr. Kamyar Assil, medical director of Conejo Pain Specialists Medical Group, specializes in diagnosing, treating and relieving even the most painful conditions. "You don’t have to suffer from pain. Your specific pain condition can be addressed and we specialize in diagnosing what kind of pain you are dealing with, pinpointing where it is coming from and then attacking it,” says Assil, a fellowship-trained and subspecialty board-certified pain management physician with more than 20 years of experience. “I am committed to designing a program that will reduce a patient’s specific pain and its underlying cause, allowing him (or her) to continue to live life to the fullest," says Assil, who is also the Senior Instructor for the Spine Intervention Society and a visiting advisor professor at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. 18

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | January 2016

Q. What is the goal of Conejo Pain Specialists Medical Group? We are a comprehensive pain medicine practice, with the goal of improving quality of life and helping patients return to everyday activities.

A.

Q. What types of conditions do you treat? Typical conditions include neck and back pain, pain from injury, herniated discs, peripheral neuralgia, post-laminectomy syndrome and spinal stenosis.

A.

Q. What is your expertise when it comes to managing pain? A. My expertise is performing precision spine procedures in order to find the cause of pain and formulating an appropriate treatment plan. For example, people often have headaches or pain they’ve dealt with for years and they don’t know the pain originated from the neck. Q. What is your approach to pain management? A. Our approach is to listen to the patient.

In my experience I can get a lot of information by listening to patients and then asking the right questions. We provide a high standard of advanced care to treat pain, including a thoughtful and thorough review of a patient’s medical history, imaging studies and results of a physical and neurological

examination. We design a customized program to reduce specific pain and its cause to improve quality of life.

Q. What makes your practice unique? A. We have been able to successfully help

patients using the above techniques to reduce or eliminate the need for pain medications. Our dedicated staff includes fellowship-trained, board-certified physicians in a community-based practice with an emphasis on quality patient care with a gentle touch. We pride ourselves on using up-todate, cutting-edge procedures and ensuring our staff members continue their education in order to promote quality care and keep current on advances in the field.

Q. What types of treatment do you recommend? A. Our treatments are customized to help

improve levels of function. Not every patient is appropriate for every treatment. When appropriate, we encourage our patients to participate in conservative treatments (i.e., physical therapy, daily exercise and counseling).

Q. What types of diagnostic methods do you use? A. History, physical exams, specific spine in-

jections, patient’s report of response to spine injections. We work with your primary care or referring physician to coordinate medications and other aspects of care. When indicated, diagnostic and therapeutic spine procedures are performed with the utmost expertise and gentleness, following strict protocols.

Q. What do you look for in a pain management doctor?

A. Pain physicians possess different levels of

expertise. Find a pain management doctor who is board certified in pain management and really knows their stuff; they should have advanced or additional fellowship training in the subspecialty of pain management. Do your homework and investigate who you’re going to see. The more trained your doctor is, the better.

Duben Holistic Chiropractic Center: Balancing the Master System ARTICLE PROVIDED

O

ptimal health is established and maintained through a properly functioning nervous system. The nervous system is the master system of the body; it monitors and controls every system of the body in coordination with the brain and nerves. This includes management of hormones, enzymes, digestive juices and neurotransmitters. Therefore, anything that interferes with the proper function of the nervous system—the master system—can impact any of the other systems and disrupt your body’s health and wellness.

CAUSES OF NERVE INTERFERENCE

Injuries, chemical stress and emotional stress can lead to a nervous system that is out of balance and can cause symptoms to appear. Once these stresses are removed, the body can sometimes self-regulate and return to health. But far too often, the symptoms of nerve interference are treated with over-the-counter medicines or prescription drugs that fail to treat the underlying cause of an ailment. The true cause of symptoms can be pinched and irritated nerves along the spinal column due to spinal misalignments. Such misalignments interfere with the nervous system’s pathways and indicate the need for chiropractic adjustments. CHIROPRACTIC SOLUTIONS

Chiropractic may be the answer to symptoms such as lack of energy, digestion issues and sleep disruption. While medication may 20

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | January 2016

temporarily provide relief, chiropractic care can help restore a properly functioning nervous system that may ameliorate your symptoms naturally. At Duben Holistic Chiropractic Center, the doctors and staff view the body as a whole and are specialists in a gentle, effective approach to health building. The doctors at Duben Holistic Chiropractic Center will: • • • •

Consult with patients regarding health concerns. Examine the body for spinal misalignments. Discuss their holistic approach before beginning care. Dedicate themselves to helping people build a healthy lifestyle, naturally.

Duben Holistic Chiropractic Center, founded by Dr. Alan Duben to serve the Westlake Village and surrounding communities with holistic chiropractic health services, is not your typical chiropractic office. More than 3,000 patients in our community have experienced the care of Drs. Duben and Erickson, which combines gentle chiropractic services with whole food nutritional supplement support and stress-reducing emotional support using Neuro Emotional Technique (NET). Learn more at DocDuben.com or call the office at 805.494.1339 to schedule an appointment with a doctor to address your health-building concerns.

INTENSE-LEVEL GROUP FITNESS Along Thousand Oaks Boulevard, fitness enthusiasts are checking out Burn 60, where the tagline is “group fitness, personal victories.” “There’s one trainer per class, but he or she will find a way to connect with you, correct your form or modify the workout according to your

level,” says Kristy Catchpole, vice president of operations of the fitness chain. She says the gym experience is personalized from start to finish. “We know your name, the last time you were here, or if you had previous injuries or illnesses,” she says. Classes typically run 60 minutes long, with more intense classes lasting 20 or 45 minutes. The workouts, including treadmill and targeted floor exercises using weights, bands and kettle bells, appeal to a wide range of ages and fitness levels. “It’s fresh everyday—the workout, the music, everything,” says Catchpole. “You can come in here knowing you get the best workout you can get that day. We call it ‘contagious motivation and palpable energy.’” Also capitalizing on group motivation and energy is Drenched Fitness in Westlake Village. Classes are led by a personal trainer who pumps up the group with various fast-paced cardio workouts and strengthening equipment. “You can go at your own pace,” says Studio Manager Samantha Baumann. “But be ready to warm up, sprint, recover and go at it again.” 22

Casual Fine Dining. You’re Always Welcome. WHAT IS NEW ZEALAND CUISINE?

Back in New Zealand, whether surrounded by the backdrop of the Auckland harbour or the rolling hills of green grass and the smell of feijoa trees, locals are accustomed to fresh and organic meals at home and at the local restaurants. In one of Auckland City’s top restaurants or at the nearby pizza bar, dining out is not just another outing but a oneof-a-kind experience complete with top quality ingredients, beautifully plated dishes, and most importantly, an environment designed for the laid back Kiwi lifestyle. Many restaurants flaunt their trustworthy kitchens with open passes, allowing the customers to view the chefs from their seats. While a typical United States kitchen relies on pepper and other strong seasonings, the Kiwi chef prepares dishes designed to emphasize the natural flavor of the food and allow those flavors to pop.

ORGANIC, FRESH, & ALLERGY FRIENDLY.

Our menu consists of locally sourced handgrown and predominantly organic produce; free-range and grass-fed organic meats; and fresh seafood that’s flown in directly from New Zealand and served less than 48 hours fresh out of the water. Our kitchen and waitstaff are dedicated to providing a welcoming and safe environment for guests with allergies and dietary restrictions. Whether you’re gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, vegetarian, or otherwise, our chefs are always happy to accomodate you without sacrificing the flavors of the dish.

Managing Stress for Well-Being ARTICLE JEFF GERO

H

ealth and wellness extend beyond the physical body to encompass the mind and spirit. And in today’s fast-paced world, where stress is

a constant companion in many people’s lives, finding time to relieve stress and live a balanced life is the key to true health and well-being. Today we live in a society that equates relaxation with wasting time. Actually, our productivity and health improve when we periodically relax, release stress and become centered, because then we are in control of ourselves rather than allowing stress to control us.

STRESS DEFINED

Stress is any strain or force on the body or mind; a power that deforms the shape of the body subjected to it. It is a dis-harmony or instability of a once-balanced state. Dr. Hans Selye, the most renowned authority and researcher on stress, defines it simply as the rate of wear and tear on the body. When we’re stressed, specific bodily responses occur. An impulse is relayed to the brain, sending signals to the glands and organs to secrete hormones into the bloodstream. Immediately, muscles tense, breath rate increases, heartbeat quickens, blood pressure rises and blood is shunted from the skin and organs to the muscles, while the brain and digestive system are disrupted. We are prepared to respond to the stressor. This preparation for danger is the “fight or flight response,” a term coined by Harvard physiologist Walter Cannon in the 1930s. The fight or flight response is an instinctual response, a survival mechanism which enabled us to survive as a species. However, today such a response is often inappropriate, as our bodies tend to react as if our lives are being threatened when they are not. Today’s threats are mainly emotional rather than physical, yet we habitually respond via the fight or flight response as if we are in constant danger. Deadlines, unrealistic self-expectations, job and home pressure, traffic, unpaid bills and the rapid, subtle stresses of modern times create prolonged stress, which can cause both psychological and physical health problems. THE PROBLEM

Prolonged stress interferes with the body's natural ability to return to homeostasis (a balanced state). Our bodies have a mechanism for reacting to stress, but then need to return to a balanced state to maintain optimum health. Normally, after a stressful event, the body automatically returns to homeostasis. However, with almost everyone's anxiety level elevated because of the stressful times we live in, many of us suffer from prolonged stress and its consequences. As many as 80 percent of Americans are stressed about their personal finances and the economy, 28

hat is inflation? How is it measured? And, most importantly, what does it mean for you and your family? In its simplest form, inflation is the rise in prices of the things we buy. If a 16-ounce steak at your favorite restaurant cost $40 last year and it’s now going for $41, the cost of that steak has inflated by $1, or 2.5%. There are a number of statistics that attempt to measure how the prices of all goods and services in our economy have risen. The most well known is the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Headline CPI is what is most commonly reported—it incorporates a thorough set of goods and services. Core CPI is headline CPI reduced by the more volatile food and energy components. The CPI—both headline and core—has averaged above 4% for the past 50 years. Core is currently below half of that; headline, which includes the benefit from lower oil prices, is a mere 0.2%. What does inflation mean for you? For most people, it’s a dual-edged sword. On the one hand, it’s like a tax that reduces your spending power—the same income from last year will buy a slightly smaller basket of goods and services this year. But “slightly” becomes huge when you compound the inflation rate over a long period. For example, 4.1% inflation in the past 50 years means that you’re paying 7.5 times as much for a typical item today than it cost in 1965. On the other hand, inflation tends to drive up the value of some possessions, such as equities and real estate. Let’s take this a bit further. Inflation is a key determinant of interest rates. When we have low inflation, we typically also have low interest rates. The impact of 34

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | January 2016

low interest rates is also dual-edged, because on the one hand, low rates mean you’ll earn very little on savings or other fixed income vehicles. On the other hand, low rates allow businesses to profit more and make more business investments, both of which may translate into higher valuations. On this latter point, interest rates up to 5% correlate with upward movement in stock prices. Rates above 5% correlate with negative stock market returns. As you can see, inflation is truly a double-edged sword. Gaining an understanding about how inflation affects interest rates and savings provides insight on the big picture and enables investors to strategize and invest accordingly.

WUNDABAR PILATES

WundaBar Pilates: Fitness for All Ages ARTICLE AMY JORDAN

O

ne of the newest fitness locales taking the Conejo Valley by storm is WundaBar Pilates, opened this month in Westlake Village. Adding a twist to traditional Pilates, WundaBar workouts offer fun and challenging complete body conditioning that appeals to men and women of all ages.

WHAT IS WUNDABAR PILATES?

Simply put, it's Pilates, reinvented. WundaBar Pilates takes core power, body-sculpting cardio and true strength to unparalleled levels for thousands of WundaBar devotees every day. I had two booming Pilates studios in Los Angeles, but knew there was something missing. From there, I decided to launch my own fitness franchise, with the aim of helping each one of my clients improve the life they are living in their own skin. I created and patented the WundaFormer, making the unbelievable benefits from the Pilates Reformer, WundaChair, Jump Board and Ballet Bar accessible to more people than ever before.

36

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | January 2016

HOW IS THE WUNDAFORMER DIFFERENT?

The WundaFormer integrates four exceptional apparatuses into one easily transformed machine for fast, sky-high energy and core-shredding workouts. It is the most efficient 45 minutes you'll spend in your day. We like to call it the “Swiss Army Knife” of Pilates machines, combining the Pilates Reformer, Jump Board, WundaChair and Ballet Bar. WHO CAN ATTEND YOUR CLASSES? IS PILATES JUST FOR WOMEN?

Let's dispel this myth once and for all: This workout is NOT just for women! Just ask the dozens of men who've gotten their butts handed to them in the studio! We provide wickedly challenging and functional classes for men and women, ages 13 to 93 (or older ... we haven't found a limit yet!). From mommies (and daddies), to moguls, students, celebrities and world-class athletes, everyone who wants a WundaBody can attend classes.

SHARE THE ROAD WITH THE LOCALS. Join the 2 Weeks to Wunda challenge Simply attend a Wunda class each day for two weeks, as part of a group or on your own. Take before and after pictures, and the results after just two weeks will astound you! Participants have reported increased energy, toned abdominals, increased strength, decreased weight and an overall healthy and fit feeling. What do you have to lose? Try WundaBar and post your own results to share your success and inspire others.

Parting Thoughts

You’re Invited..

TO JOIN THE GREAT PURGE & CLEAN OF 2016 WORDS LISA COOKE HARRISON

H

appy New Year! Now that you’ve got your fitness and wellness goals firmly in place, it’s time to look closely at the space around you and ask yourself, “Are things looking a little cluttered?” or “Are my closets bursting at the seams?” Why not set a goal to declutter and, more importantly, to simplify this year? Several years ago, I was inspired by a book called Simple Abundance to set a goal to clean, sort and rid my home of much of the stuff that was being stored but rarely (or never) used in spare drawers, closets, cabinets and bookshelves around my home. Finding truth in the idea that "we fill the space we have" meant that my home-sweethome was filled to the brim. Like many of you, I’m blessed to live in a house with extra closets, an extra bedroom and lots of built-in cabinets and bookshelves. I realized in the 12 years we’d lived in our home, we’d filled all of these spaces. It was time to attack them, and I needed a plan. My goal? To get rid of something nearly every day. As I sit and watch television in the evenings, I try to use that time to clean out a drawer or two or a shelf in one of the nearby closets. (Commercials are the perfect time to put things back.) During one evening of binge-watching three episodes of my favorite show, I carried all of the plastic shoe boxes that make up our first aid and medicine closet supplies to the floor in front of the television. It’s amazing how many nearly empty bottles of cough

42

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | January 2016

syrup and Tums we’d accumulated. An hour later my waste basket was full and I’d easily pitched more than a dozen items, and so my goal for that week was met. Once upon a time I thought every bookshelf should be lined with books, and so I collected and kept every book I finished. Now I take pride in half-empty bookshelves that provide me with space to show off pretty collectibles and a few framed family photos. My beloved got involved at a different level. He started selling things on Craigslist and eBay. Suddenly the wood chipper and junior golf clubs in the garage had each brought in fifty dollars. That alone was motivation for him to keep posting. We agreed this method was significantly easier than a garage sale since we both work full-time. Twice a year I go through my son’s closets and dressers. It doesn’t take more than 20 minutes of playing “Keep or toss?” with my growing teens to whittle down their t-shirt collections and get rid of clothes that no longer fit. Since they seem to come home with a t-shirt a week from one activity or another, it’s common for them to have 10 favorites and ignore the rest. Do you ever find yourself watching an episode of something on your computer? Use that time to organize and purge from your desk, home office space or kitchen, depending on where your computer lives. The organizational experts all seem to agree—if it isn’t useful, sentimental or beautiful, it might be time to let it go.
