Wonder Women & Shining Stars G
rowing up in the 1970's, I was taught women could do anything... in fact, I could even be the first female president, according to my enthusiastic father, who had two daughters he empowered to be as strong and capable as the son he never had.
It's hard to believe, despite the decades of efforts by women leading the fight for equality and equal rights, that even when I was born in 1970, women could be fired from their job for being pregnant (until 1978), could not run in the Boston Marathon (until 1972) and could not get a credit card (until 1974)! Yes, we've definitely come a long way, baby! I feel very fortunate to live in a time when opportunities for women have crashed through the glass ceiling to reach heights never before attained... no more are women relegated to being just wives and mothers, or perhaps nurses, secretaries or teachers. Today, women do anything they set their mind to. One of my favorite sayings that I have passed on to my own daughter (and son, no discrimination here!) is "Shoot for the moon... even if you miss, you'll land among the stars!" We think you'll agree that the incredible women featured in this issue are all stars, who will surely inspire you to follow your passion and achieve your loftiest goals as you read about their impressive accomplishments, life lessons and sage advice. The month of May, during which we set aside a special day to honor our wonderful mothers, is the perfect time to spotlight the many wonder women in our community who are making a difference using their skills, talents, energy and smarts. We honor them, along with all of the women advertisers and entrepreneurs, comprising doctors, lawyers, realtors, trainers and businesswomen who make up the Conejo Valley Lifestyle family, and women everywhere who strive to be their best while still making the time to be loving mothers, sisters, daughters, grandmothers, aunts, best friends and community leaders. These strong role models serve as beacons to the world around them, brightly lighting the way to success on whatever path a women chooses to take, even the road to the White House. And not to worry, boys, the First Man will have his day too, sooner or later.

lying high after a successful 22nd season of Pacific Festival Ballet’s (PFB) “The Nutcracker” featuring guest artists from New York City Ballet, the company will soon be taking flight with its spring ballet, “Peter Pan!” Every spring, Pacific Festival Ballet presents a classical or unique original ballet. This year, Peter Pan, a ballet interpretation of a story that we all grew up with, appeals to the entire community, from tiny tots to great-grandparents. This is PFB’s third reprise of Peter Pan, and each time Artistic Director Kim Maselli brings new magic to this classic story. Pixie dust, fairies, pirates, crocodiles and our favorite boy who won’t grow up warms our hearts in this timeless classic. From flying to an enchanted island to battling swashbuckling pirates led by the ferocious Captain Hook, this ballet adventure will be sure to awaken the child inside each of us! Pacific Festival Ballet spares no expense with this first-class, flight. Peter, Wendy, John and Michael will learn the art of theatre flying from Zfx Flying Effects instructors, who provided the same excitement and safety to Kathy Rigby when she toured and performed on Broadway. Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza for three days to work with our talented dancers, and by day four, our performers will be on their maiden voyage flying in front of a live audience to the delight and wonder of the crowds. The Alliance for the Arts has made it their mission to share the beauty of dance, as well as other art forms, with Title 1 students. Thanks to their generosity, the Kavli Theatre, which seats 1,800, will be filled to capacity for an outreach performance when Pacific Festival Ballet, the resident ballet company of the Civic Arts Plaza since 2006, performs "Peter Pan" for students who might otherwise miss this amazing opportunity. PFB's training school, California Dance Theatre in Agoura Hills, celebrates 30 years of training dancers of all levels, from Mommy and Me classes to advanced high school students. PFB also offers a curriculum for dancers on their way to university and professional dance careers. The adult program also flourishes with daily classes in ballet, tap and jazz. The school and the company pride themselves on cultivating the next generation of artists and ballet enthusiasts. Becoming a Pacific Festival Ballet donor allows individuals and businesses the opportunity to support ballet as a performing art and expand its many channels of community outreach. For more information about becoming a donor, please email Carrie Barnett at carrie@ pacfestballet.org or visit the PFB website, PacFestBallet.org. Come fly with us! n 2016, an estimated 10,000 children under 15 years of age in the ARTICLE KEN PHILLIPS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED United States will be diagnosed with cancer and about 12% will most likely die from the disease. Sadly, about 60% of the survivors will probably suffer subsequent medical issues later in their lives, such as heart failure, infertility and secondary cancers. Jarren Donatini was diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer just before age 3. For 18 months, he bravely battled, but ultimately lost his fight. Heather and Jason Donatini were devastated and overwhelmed by the loss of their son. Determined to turn their pain into something positive to honor their son and at the same time help other families deal with the heavy emotional and financial issues they had faced through Jarren’s struggle, the Donatinis founded the BumbleBee Foundation in 2011. Since then, the 501c3 nonprofit has provided love and support to more than 100 pediatric cancer families in the Conejo Valley and surrounding areas, having spent over $150,000 to offset expenses for many of these families and raising awareness through special events held throughout the year. As executive director of the BumbleBee Foundation, Heather handles the day-to-day operations of the growing organization, which she hopes will take hold nationwide. “As the queen bee, I envision hives of caring, loving support throughout the country. Pediatric cancer families needn’t go through this alone,” says Heather. BumbleBee provides limited financial support for families needing to cover basic needs, such as groceries, medical bills, gas and sometimes, rent. The foundation also focuses on CONTINUED >

helping to provide meals, transportation and comfort or counseling to caregivers of children who have cancer. Pediatric cancer affects all ethnic, gender and socioeconomic groups, and more than 40,000 children undergo treatment annually. “Our focus is on the families in the trenches of the battle, whatever their backgrounds," notes Heather. "Our desire is to lighten the burden for each of our BumbleBee families, even if only momentarily to allow them a chance to breathe. It is our goal to provide ongoing support when they need it most.” The foundation offers help and support to anyone with a child under age 18 who has cancer.

“Whether the families need financial support or simply guidance, we’re here for them," says Heather. "If we have to rally a community to raise funds, we will do that. If they want us to assist with memorial services, we can handle that for them.” With the amount of work at hand, BumbleBee is always looking for volunteers, especially during fundraisers and in the spring and winter during their holiday “adoption” programs. This July 9 is the 5th Annual FUNraiser in Simi Valley, featuring a casino night with food, music, raffles and more. Contributions are tax-deductible. So, how did the foundation get its name? It comes from their son’s love of one of the “Autobots” named “Bumblebee” in his favorite “Transformers” movie. The yellow robot transforms into a sleek, muscle car that Jarren adored. Shortly after his passing, Jarren’s parents discovered a drawing he had done at age 2. It was a bumblebee, which would become the organization’s logo. To learn more about the

AFFIRMATIVE ESCROW: Real Estate Expertise & Service ARTICLE PROVIDED
M
eet Affirmative Escrow Manager Brynne DesMarteauBradbrook, in this Q&A about Affirmative and its mission.
WHAT SERVICES DOES AFFIRMATIVE ESCROW PROVIDE?
Commercial and residential resale and refinance escrow services, including bank-owned properties, corporate employee relocation, short sale and 1031 tax-deferred exchange transactions. HOW LONG HAS AFFIRMATIVE ESCROW BEEN IN BUSINESS?
For 15 years, since May 2001. We have received very favorable feedback from the real estate public. The majority of our business is from repeat customers and referrals, both of which we consider the greatest compliment! Just this past year, we changed our license and now operate as an Independent Escrow Company, licensed by the Department of Business Oversight. This has allowed us to broaden our customer base and work with any realtor, buyer or seller. HOW DOES AFFIRMATIVE ESCROW BENEFIT CLIENTS?
We concentrate on customer service and communication, processing transactions with state-of-the-art escrow-specific software with a focus on privacy and security of personal information. We incorporate secured banking with layered approval procedures for additional protection. Parties are updated on the transaction via an automated notification system which keeps everyone in the know at all times. Affirmative Escrow goes the extra mile. We pride ourselves on troubleshooting any situation ASAP and keeping an eye on the entire transaction while proactively communicating with realtors.
WHAT IS INVOLVED IN A TYPICAL ESCROW PROCESS?
Escrow requires a substantial amount of detailed work. Every document presented to escrow requires review and processing. The purchase contract is reviewed and our file and escrow software system is set up based on the contract's unique details. A processing game plan is prepared and the file is calendared for specific events and follow-up. Escrow requests, reviews and distributes the preliminary title report, which requires researching and obtaining documents to clear items so that a clear Policy of Title Insurance can be issued. At some point escrow will interact with each and every entity. In addition to direct contact with the buyer, seller and real estate agents, we coordinate directly with the buyer's lender, homeowner's insurance agent, home warranty company, zone disclosure company, title company, seller's existing lender, homeowner's association and local City Building Records offices. Escrow is responsible for handling all funds and documents and for the delivery of the documents for recording and ultimately the disbursement of all funds and final accounting of the entire transaction. As a result of our stringent
WHO ARE THE STAFF MEMBERS?
Our staff of nine escrow professionals has over 130 years of combined experience! Each staff member has been hand-picked through an extensive screening process. We hire by referral only and require a full background check and personal references. Each individual brings a unique skill set to the company. Staff members are cross-trained, allowing us to maintain our consistent high level of service and expertise. Proper staffing allows time for closer review of documentation and mitigation of potential complications in today's complex transactions. 16

Can Natural Hormones Improve Your Health? ARTICLE DR. SHARON NORLING
I
f you are premenopausal or menopausal, you know these transitions can be challenging—but they don’t have to be. During the menopausal years, the production of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and thyroid needed to maintain a youthful vitality rapidly begins to decline. Symptoms include depression, irritability, short-term memory loss, hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, low libido, fatigue and weight gain. How happy, energetic and sexy can you feel with these symptoms? Not very! Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is all about returning what time and nature take away. Hormones can not only make you feel better, give you more energy and help you sleep, but they have been shown to support heart and bone health and decrease cancer risk. Testosterone, for example, is produced by a woman's ovaries, adrenal glands and fat cells and plays an important role in women’s health. Low testosterone in women can have a negative impact on libido, moods, sense of well-being, bone and muscle mass and cardiovascular health.
HORMONES ARE GOOD FOR ME? Myths and misinformation about synthetic nonbioidentical hormones and natural bioidentical hormones cause confusion about the importance of hormone therapy. The truth is, bioidentical hormones have the same exact structure as the hormones produced naturally by the body. Literature demonstrating harmful effects of hormones concern nonbioidentical hormones. It is important to know that using bioidentical progesterone actually decreases the risk of breast cancer. The Women's Health Initiative of 2002 is an oft-cited study, which I was involved in while teaching at the University of Minnesota Medical School. For many reasons (excluding women with hot flashes, including women to age 80, including smokers), the study design has been shown to be flawed. Additionally, the study only included synthetic, unnatural hormones Premarin and Provera, which increased breast cancer risk. Seven cases of nonfatal breast cancer out of 10,000 women in the study were reported. A study published in the Journal of Breast Cancer Research and Treatment showed that 80,000 women using various forms of Hormonal Replacement Therapy (HRT) consisting of bioidentical progesterone and estrogen experienced significantly reduced rates of breast cancer. 18
Conejo Valley Lifestyle | May 2016
Bioidentical natural hormones contain both estriol and estradiol. According to the International Journal of Cancer, estriol did not increase breast cancer compared to women who never used HRT. Using creams applied to the skin also confers fewer health risks than oral preparations. Bioidentical hormones have also been shown to support heart health. A Journal of the American Medical Association article showed the bioidentical hormone progesterone increases good cholesterol (HDL). Estriol can decrease high blood pressure, total cholesterol and triglycerides, but increase HDL. Estriol enhances sexual and urinary health and promotes youthful skin. A British Medical Journal study showed after 10 years, women receiving HRT early after menopause had significantly reduced risk of mortality, heart failure and heart attacks, without any apparent risk of cancer, venous thromboembolism (clots) or strokes. Recent Mayo Clinic research of over 52,000 women found that neither estrogen alone, nor estrogen combined with progesterone affected a woman’s risk of dying from any cause, or specifically from a heart attack, stroke or cancer.
IS HRT RIGHT FOR ME? Tests are available to determine your estrogen-related cancer risk. Testing for thyroid function, cortisol, neurotransmitters and vitamin D provides important information that can be used to balance hormones. Consult your physician for details about personal risks or benefits of hormonal replacement therapy. Meanwhile, decrease your inflammation, relieve stress, remove toxins and stop eating sugar. Continue to eat cruciferous vegetables and fresh fish, drink green tea and dance the night away to promote bone and cardiovascular health. Conejo Valley Days CELEBRATING 60 YEARS! ARTICLE PROVIDED PHOTOGRAPHY CONEJO VALLEY DAYS
A
tribute to our valley’s western roots and community spirit, the 60th Annual Conejo Valley Days takes center stage May 11-15 at Conejo Creek Park South (23 Freeway/Janss Rd. exit) in Thousand Oaks. The five-day event features entertainment for all ages. This year will again showcase top-rated RCS carnival rides, midway games and world-class headliners performing live music. Also scheduled are motocross freestyle exhibitions, free arts and crafts, the Fourth Annual Outhouse Races, a Home Décor and Gardening Show and dozens of craft vendors and displays by the Chumash Indian Museum and other historical venues. On Wednesday and Thursday evenings, emerging young musicians will show off their talent. Friday night is western music night (complete with line-dancing lessons). Chevy Metal returns on Saturday (with Foo Fighters’ drummer Taylor Hawkins and friends). The Oaks Mile-5K Run will be held Saturday morning. Sunday will feature Latin dance music all day. Coming back after a hiatus is the CVD Children’s Parade on Saturday, May 7 (Conejo Creek Park North) for kids in pre-K through third grade. This event, sponsored by the Thousand Oaks Kiwanis Club, also features bounce house fun and entertainment. All who attend get $1 off CVD admission. Parade entry forms are on the CVD website. Another highlight for the 60th anniversary is the first CVD Instahunt, open to all residents. Participants search for selected points of interest around the Conejo Valley that reflect the valley’s heritage and history. Top winners receive a free one-day CVD entry and an unlimited carnival ride wristband. 20
Conejo Valley Lifestyle | May 2016
Pet Central Education & Welfare Foundation is CVD’s major sponsor. It will again host pet adoptions with Shelter Hope Pet Shop Saturday and Sunday. Also on Saturday and Sunday will be a STEM Science Pavilion featuring student projects and interactive projects designed to educate and entertain. “While great carnival rides, live entertainment and plenty of fun things to do are what attract thousands to CVD each year, just as importantly, CVD is a major fundraiser for more than 25 local nonprofits,” says Mary-Catherine McBride, CVD executive director. “Some groups help collect tickets, keep CVD clean, serve food and help in a host of other vital ways while earning money to help their group.” Nonprofits that have participated at CVD throughout the years include Rotary Club of Newbury Park, Soroptimists, Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge, Ventura County Firefighters Foundation and Zonta Club. New this year is Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County, offering a VIP Wine Tasting Garden fundraiser. “It’s these kinds of relationships that make CVD so special,” says McBride. “While the community has grown since CVD first began 60 years ago, the connection between the festival and area nonprofits still gives the event that small-town feel.” Live entertainment, carnival rides and free hands-on activities are included with general admission. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for kids 6 through 12 and free for kids 5 and under. Special discounts and packages are also available. Carnival rides are extra. “O
nly men are doctors.” This statement, asserted by a young girl in 1985, sparked her mother, AAUW (American Association of University Women) member Sandy Hindy, to show her daughter otherwise and led to the founding of the Women’s History Project in 1986. Celebrating its 30th year in 2016, the Women's History Project celebrates the accomplishments of women through live presentations about their lives. Sandy started by writing scripts for her daughter’s school and adults presented them. One of the first scripts was a first-person narrative of Elizabeth Blackwell, a doctor. Since then, the Thousand Oaks chapter of AAUW has written more than 100 scripts, compiling many in a book series. Script selection is done by the AAUW Women’s History Committee in June. "We sometimes rotate scripts if they haven’t been presented in a while, or often update them. We also select a new inspiring woman (whether living or deceased) to write a script about, especially if her story goes well with a current event," said a committee member. This year featured a new script about the women of the National Park Service, since the NPS is commemorating its 100th year! Another recent script profiles former migrant worker Irene Gomez, who is a local resident. Her story of courage, from working in the fields at age 14 to finding a way out and becoming a manager of MICOP (Mixteco Indigena Community Organizing Project), resounded with the committee.

arm and energetic with bright blue eyes and a strong, fit body, Thousand Oaks Bay Club personal trainer JoNell Vachet has been up for nearly four hours and trained six clients by 8:30 a.m. A skilled personal trainer with 30 years of experience as a licensed physical therapist, JoNell has a deep understanding of the human body and works with clients of all fitness levels—including beginners and those with physical challenges as well as the most conditioned athletes. Certified in CrossFit and trained in Olympic weightlifting, JoNell possesses a broad range of knowledge to empower her clients to succeed. One gentleman training with JoNell recently lost 100 pounds and has changed his lifestyle to maintain his healthy weight and fitness level. And women from the “Just Drop It” weight loss/personal training group JoNell co-leads with Donna Connor are seeing results just several weeks in! SETTING UP FOR SUCCESS
Working with a personal trainer may seem intimidating or unnecessary at first. JoNell urges you to keep an open mind. “What you may have learned about exercise years ago may not be considered correct now. I don’t teach sit-ups like I used to. There are new ways to work your core that are better for your back and better in general for functional activity,” she explains. Even a few sessions with a trainer can prevent injuries, especially for beginners. “A trainer can show you the proper way to start,” she says.

suggest women have their hormone levels checked with their medical doctors to address imbalances,” she says. JoNell also tests body composition—muscle mass, body fat, water and bone—using a device to measure each and suggests a target percentage. The focus is on building muscle mass. “Five pounds of fat is larger than five pounds of muscle. When a woman builds muscle, she naturally gets more lean and more definition becomes apparent, even if the number on the scale doesn’t change,” she explains. Muscle burns more calories than fat, thus building muscle mass stokes the metabolism and makes weight loss easier to achieve. JoNell makes it clear that mobility matters too. “You should be able to squat to the floor and keep your heels on the ground,” she says. Another mobility marker is the ability to get up and down from the floor easily. She has observed that if women aren’t exercising regularly as they grow older, they can lose that ability.
“I see two different groups of women, ladies in their 50s that look 35 and women in their 50s that look 65. The main difference is exercise and diet,” she says.
WORKING WITH WOMEN
COMMITMENT MEANS PAYOFF
Her clients include men, athletes and teens, but at 52, JoNell has an affinity for working with women ages 40-60. She understands the unique needs of a woman’s middle-aged body and how to construct programs to ensure success and avoid injury. “One thing most women over 40 do not realize is just how much they need to lift weights. Once you are past 30-35 years old, you start to lose muscle mass every single year. It starts out at 1-3% and then increases to 5%—and then it gets even higher as you grow older. It really escalates after age 60,” she warns. Bone loss is another problem, and she works with many osteopenic clients who have lower bone density. “They need to work with weights and do weight-bearing activities,” she says. It’s no secret that women tend to carry more weight in their midsection as they age, often due to hormonal changes. “I frequently
It generally takes beginners at least four to six weeks to “ramp up” a fitness program and during that time, it can be tough, JoNell explains. Clients who show up even when they are tired and sore usually find relief after a simple 10-15 minute stretching session. The great news is that their sustained commitment pays off. “My clients have more energy. They are brighter and live with more vitality. The increase in physical activity boosts the body’s manufacturing of 'feel good' endorphins and lifts their mood. And they have more energy for their work, kids, grandkids and spouses,” she says. That’s a pretty good payoff, if you ask me!

Casual Fine Dining. You’re Always Welcome. WHAT IS NEW ZEALAND CUISINE?
Back in New Zealand, whether surrounded by the backdrop of the Auckland harbour or the rolling hills of green grass and the smell of feijoa trees, locals are accustomed to fresh and organic meals at home and at the local restaurants. In one of Auckland City’s top restaurants or at the nearby pizza bar, dining out is not just another outing but a oneof-a-kind experience complete with top quality ingredients, beautifully plated dishes, and most importantly, an environment designed for the laid back Kiwi lifestyle. Many restaurants flaunt their trustworthy kitchens with open passes, allowing the customers to view the chefs from their seats. While a typical United States kitchen relies on pepper and other strong seasonings, the Kiwi chef prepares dishes designed to emphasize the natural flavor of the food and allow those flavors to pop.
ORGANIC, FRESH, & ALLERGY FRIENDLY.
Our menu consists of locally sourced handgrown and predominantly organic produce; free-range and grass-fed organic meats; and fresh seafood that’s flown in directly from New Zealand and served less than 48 hours fresh out of the water. Our kitchen and waitstaff are dedicated to providing a welcoming and safe environment for guests with allergies and dietary restrictions. Whether you’re gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, vegetarian, or otherwise, our chefs are always happy to accomodate you without sacrificing the flavors of the dish.

NAWBO WOMAN BUSINESS OWNER OF THE YEAR
NAWBO Woman Business Owner of the Year Nellie R. Akalp, Founder & CEO of CorpNet.com
NELLIE R. AKALP Founder & CEO of CorpNet.com Nellie is an entrepreneur, author, speaker, wife and mother of four. WORDS TO LIVE BY: Be passionate, genuine and authentic! FAVORITE QUOTE OR MOTTO: "Do what you love and love what you do each and every day... otherwise, why
do it at all?" MENTOR: My husband and business partner of 23 years, Phil Akalp. He always pushes me to continuously
improve myself in all aspects of my life, whether business or personal. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't be the wife, mother and business expert I am today. MOST IMPORTANT LESSON: I’ve learned that success is something you achieve based on how much you put
into whatever it is that you would like to see success from. Certainly others can help you, just as others can provide obstacles, but ultimately you make your own success and your own failure. If you want to have success and be successful, you can’t make success your goal. The key is not to worry about being successful, but to instead work toward being significant, and the success will naturally follow. MOST REWARDING ACCOMPLISHMENT: Starting a company in 1997 and selling it eight years later at the age of
30 for a very large sum of cash to a publicly traded company, then taking three years off to start all over again with the launch of our current business, CorpNet.com, which was recognized on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing privately held companies in America in 2015. In my personal life, my biggest accomplishment has been giving birth to my four beautiful children who teach me something new each day and continue to teach me that life is so beautiful when seen through the innocence of children. Of course, being happily married to my husband and business partner of over 18 years is the cherry on top. ADVICE FOR WOMEN: If you want to get someone’s attention - be different, disruptive, distinct and make an impression! FUTURE GOALS: I want to continue to develop myself as a more prominent and inspirational voice to entrepre-
neurs, startups and the small business community.

ALLIE ANDERSON
Owner/Designer/Manager Shop Allie Anderson and Presh Events WORDS TO LIVE BY: Never Give Up! At an early age, I learned the true definition of “never give up” when my family was trying
to adopt a sibling for me since mom couldn’t conceive anymore. I remember my mom explaining they had tried their best. “Never give up,” I said. We didn't, and now my brother is a freshman in college! In business, there have been many obstacles along the way: expenses that have led to tough decisions, staying motivated through long hours of working and not letting my age get in the way of my dreams are just a few examples. Great things can come out of tough times and I never give up trying. From that, I have built two amazing businesses and am currently in the process of expanding. MENTOR: My mother has always been my support and inspiration. She has pushed me to give everything I have into whatever
I am passionate about. MOST IMPORTANT LESSON: When I first opened my online store, Shop Allie Anderson, I had no idea what I was getting into. I began
selling sorority Greek-lettered accessories online, when a lawyer told me to stop selling the Greek-lettered items. It scared me to death and I immediately took down the listings! I found out how to get licensed, and I’ve learned not to let anything scare me away from my passion. MOST REWARDING ACCOMPLISHMENT: My most rewarding accomplishment by far is the NAWBO award for Young Woman
Entrepreneur of the Year! ADVICE FOR WOMEN: Let’s face it. Women live in a men’s working world. While our society is making slow progress toward
equal opportunity, there are still problems that make women feel less than men at work. I will never forget the day my business partner and I showed up prepared to run a wedding rehearsal and the officiant arrived ready to run the show. He talked over us, telling the wedding party what to do, how to hold the flowers and where to stand. He was doing our job. Once I noticed the bride, my client, looking at me with frustration from his attitude, I had enough. Where he was wrong in his direction, I announced it loud and clear. He was very surprised and stopped talking; I took that opportunity to do my job. From that experience, I realized how important it is for women to take action when they feel their job is being overrun, by a man or woman. FUTURE GOALS: I hope to inspire more young women like me who have a drive to follow their passion and dreams.

THE MORTON TEAM: Caring for Community ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
A
t Keller Williams Westlake Village, a team of women stands out from the crowd for many reasons. The Morton Team International has linked talented individuals who cooperatively work as a team in their business model. Teamwork is defined as the combined action of a group of people, especially when effective and efficient. If a problem arises, “two heads are better than one.” Working together as a team allows each individual to bring their own talents to the table for the betterment of the group. Not only does The Morton Team practice teamwork in business, there is also a sense of community by being supportive of shared causes. This team of women also comes together to help achieve the common goal of supporting needs in their community. Recently, The Morton Team toured Gabriel’s House in Oxnard and provided needed supplies to benefit the women and children it serves. Gabriel’s House is a place of hope that cares for the orphans and widows of Ventura County in their distress. Director Cindy Wilson explained how Gabriel’s House supports women while keeping them accountable and responsible for their 44

future. A warm bed and a safe haven providing emergency shelter, food and clothing give the families a place to call home and help restore their self-esteem, while resources (jobs, education, training, planning and the development of financial and homemaking skills) are available to help them find permanent solutions to end the risk of homelessness. The Morton Team is proud to support Gabriel's House, as it strengthens the community and empowers the women and children to be healed and live independently. Throughout the year, The Morton Team will provide ongoing support for this important cause by planting a vegetable and flower garden and supporting additional projects as needed. To volunteer, please contact The Morton Team at TheMortonTeam.net. The Morton Team is thankful for the opportunity to serve our community in the Real Estate industry and by giving back to support those in need. Montecito Bank & Trust:
Full Service in Every Way INTRODUCING A NEW RESIDENTIAL MORTGAGE PROGRAM! ARTICLE KEN PHILLIPS
M
ontecito Bank & Trust (MB&T) opened its doors March 17, 1975, with the mission of making the communities it serves better places to live and work. For over four decades, the talented men and women of the institution have dedicated themselves to both helping their customers with their financial needs and investing in their communities in a variety of ways. Today, MB&T has grown to include 10 branches throughout Ventura and Santa Barbara counties with over 200 banking associates, making it the largest locally-owned, community bank in the area. Its growth has been spurred through innovation, technology and personalized customer service. MB&T has continuously invested in ways to make its banking and financial management experience better for its customers. An impressive array of its programs includes business, personal, and nonprofit financing, online and mobile banking, wealth management, investment opportunities and trust and estate planning, but one element was missing from its portfolio of services . . . residential mortgage banking. As of March 1, 2016, just days before its 41st birthday, MB&T celebrated with the introduction of a new mortgage banking department. The mortgage offering is designed to complement and integrate with the bank’s many other products and services to provide a comprehensive portfolio of financial services under one roof. “We have assembled a team of seasoned professionals to handle our mortgage business, including loan officers, underwriters and processors," says Jeff Paul, MB&T’s executive vice president and director of retail and commercial banking. "Many of these talented people have 15 and 30 years of experience, so we are able Carol Taylor, VP Residential Mortgage Manager 46

to launch this business at a dead run. We do it all in-house and our customers are applauding the welcomed addition of these services.” The locally-based mortgage team can provide loans up to five million dollars on both fixed and adjustable rate mortgages. They can also handle owner-occupied and investment property transactions, home purchase, refinancing and cash outs. “We see mortgage banking as an integral part of our overall client services designed to meet our customers’ financial needs, whatever they may be and whenever they require them," explains Carol Taylor, MB&T’s vice president residential mortgage manager. "We view this new service as a means of building stronger client relationships that will last far beyond the buying or selling of property. “We believe we are in a great position in terms of our size, expertise and resources to do it all for our clients. We serve all elements of our communities with a personal touch, whether our client is a first time, entry-level homebuyer or someone ready to move up to an estate-type property,” says Taylor. “On a regular basis, all business platforms within our company get together to go over our strategic plans and results to ensure we’re on track and meeting our clients’ needs," adds Paul. "Moreover, we look to share expertise and find new ways to integrate our programs to benefit our clients. This has always been our philosophy and we have continued to grow because we understand that we will do well if our customers do well.” Providing customers with a full range of financial services is only part of what MB&T does and helps define its role as a corporate citizen. The bank is also actively involved in the communities and giving back to make them better places to live and work. “We are pleased to contribute to strengthening our communities," says Paul. "This is a fundamental part of our mission. Our entire culture is family-like and that sense of caring and values trickles down to our customer base and how we relate to them.” Montecito Bank & Trust has a long history of philanthropy and community involvement. Its well-known Community Dividends® program has already awarded $13 million to local nonprofits. And MB&T's equally recognized Anniversary Grants® program enables the bank’s associates to nominate and vote for local charities to be granted thousands of dollars every year. From opening the first checking account to securing an IRA to buying up to a larger home, MB&T is more than capable. The addition of the new mortgage program completes and makes full the circle of services to benefit MB&T's clients at all stages of their lives. For more information on Montecito Bank & Trust’s new residential mortgage program and any of its many other services, call 805.963.7511 or visit MontecitoBank.com.

Classes are small with one-on-one guidance and modifications by trained instructors. "Westlake Village was my number 1 choice location," says Owner/Educator Maryellen Aviano, a 34-year film studio veteran who became so hooked on WundaBar classes in the Valley that she decided to become an instructor and open her own studio. "I've learned life's puzzle has many pieces and am thrilled how things are fitting together, with many discoveries along the way," says Aviano. "WundaBar training with MarieJose Blom, a world-renowned movement educator, and WundaBar Pilates Founder Amy Jordan is second to none, intense, educational and rewarding, working "from the inside out," she adds. WundaBar's local instructors are dedicated to Westlake Village clientele, many already familiar with one another from school, civic and fitness activities. Community-minded as well as health-conscious, the WundaBar team is active in local charity events and donates 100% of the proceeds from its $10 introductory classes to the Foundation for Las Virgenes Schools. Men and women age 13 and up are invited to discover what a WundaBar workout is all about and take an introductory class for $10. "With the Conejo Valley lifestyle being health conscious, active and outgoing, I'm happy to be a part of it and to share an awesome team of WundaBar Pilates educators," says Aviano.

I have been a traditional Pilates instructor for eight years and became a proud WundaBar educator in 2015. Residing in Lake Sherwood with my husband and 3-year-old son, I feel blessed to live and teach in a community where people value family, friends and a healthy active lifestyle! BETH GUNDERIA

Once settled in L.A., I discovered WundaBar Pilates and fell in love with the full body and mind workout as well as an active lifestyle with my husband and two teenagers. I am currently an instructor and studio manager in two locations, including Westlake Village. ANDREA OATEY
Searching for a great workout that wouldn't damage my body after years of high-impact fitness, I began WundaBar Pilates classes and soon trained to become an instructor for the newly opened Westlake Village studio. I've lived in the area for 18 years and my husband and I have two teens at Agoura Hills High School. Discovering the Woman You Call Mom DEDICATED TO MY MOM WORDS KIM PAGA

omen have raised the bar in our world. My family’s origin of women were generally very strong and amazing and I am blessed to be a part of their lineage. To know that I am carrying on their tradition of vitality cues the song "I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar!” As far back as I can think, my grandmother and mom were the powerhouses and mentors in my life. With great sadness, I unexpectedly lost my mom the day before Valentine's Day. My world has definitely been crushed, but I am going to continue celebrating her life. Monica Helpman: My mom, the woman I looked up to. I truly hope you have and always will have someone you look up to as much as I did. Who are your role models? I say "models" because you can have many—your mom, grandmother, aunts, teachers or any woman who has helped shape you and your life. When you think about who you really are, which amazing woman has helped you realize you are amazing? If you’re not sure, you might want to reflect for a moment about your past and your self-identity. Have you ever done this? Are you who you think you were meant to be? Is your life where you think it should be? If it's not, I invite you to "take the bull by the horns" and make it your best possible life. Why would you short yourself or give yourself anything else? There might be a few reasons you are not giving yourself the love that you deserve. One being that you don't love yourself or think you should love yourself. Maybe you don't feel you deserve it or are worthy of it. Well I'm here to remind you that not only do you deserve it, but we all do. We must honor our own journeys, as well as the women around us. We need to be each other's cheerleaders to encourage and lift each other up, creating a universal support group. I started a women's support group a few years ago to enhance each of us and the beautiful gifts that we all possess as women and to let women know we are not alone. My mother was also my inspiration for the support group. When she was raising us, her children, she was very busy, helping out on every committee, like many of us. My mom had a very full life with lots of friends. She volunteered at our school, dinner parties and worked while 58

still taking great care of her family. On top of all of this, our home was decorated nicely, always clean and in order. It was a happy home. A place that I enjoyed coming home to and where my friends always wanted to be. My mom welcomed everyone. If it was going to rain, there was always a pot of soup to warm us up. My mom always dressed beautifully. My mom worked in several careers, one being a stylist for the studios like myself, but she always made time for her kids and friends. After her kids got older, she began to find herself alone more. It got harder to meet friends. My mom told me to start making friends before my kids got too old as it would just get harder and harder to make new connections. She taught me to stand up for myself and to be my own cheerleader. She was never prejudiced toward anything or anyone, other than thinking her kids were the best. She taught us that if you work hard, you will get rewarded. She taught us to have traditions and regularities. She taught us to spend money on ourselves, because “when you look good, you feel good.” She taught us to be a team player, and that we are never too old to learn. She taught me to keep filling my mind with great, positive information. My mom taught me about unconditional love as a mother. Of course, we have faced difficult times as a family, but she was a mom that never gave up and was always able to give us another chance. I hope that you all have someone who you look up to like I did and forever will. For everyone that still has their moms, cherish every moment as you never know when that day will come.
