What It Means to Be a Dad J
une is Father’s Day month. A whole lot less is made of Father’s Day than Mother’s Day in May. Not surprising, since who was it that gave birth to us and did most of the heavy lifting and nurturing during our early years? Mom did. Besides (and this may sound sexist, but who cares?), you better be nice to the women in your life or life will not be worth living. However, overlooking the incredibly important role played by an ever present loving and supportive father is a huge omission. Far too many adult men and women have failed to some extent in their lives because their father was not present emotionally or was gone altogether. If they have overcome the absence of their father’s support and love, it is only because they have fought mightily to do so. From a personal standpoint, when I went through a divorce while my three children ranged in age from 6 to 13, the main thing I tried to hold on to was my relationship and love of my children. I was very frightened that I would lose all that and also cause irreparable harm to their emotional well-being. Was I perfect in my quest? Not really. As one would expect, there were plenty of ups and downs. But we did make it through. They are all grown up, successful and have kids of their own. I hope they learned from my mistakes as well as what I also did right. The constant was that we remained FAMILY and Dad was there when needed.

Please do not think that what I have just written is bragging. I am just grateful that I kept it together and made it through. There are far too many men who fail as fathers. Sometimes they do not even know it when it is happening. They are there physically, but not emotionally. So, we need to be there for our children at every level. Sometimes men need to remind themselves to do it. Go for it guys!

Men very often think that because they work hard and are successful financially it is an excuse for not being there for much of their children’s development… school, sports, music lessons, recitals, science projects, helping with math (I hated geometry), just reading a book with them when they are young… and some of the unpleasant things like illness or problems at school. Mom cannot and should not do it all. Dad should not tune out.

Healthy Lifestyle
Taking a
Approach to Emotional Health ARTICLE JACK MCGHIE
D
octors Alan Duben and Lindsay Erickson at the Duben Holistic Chiropractic Center provide insight into their unique methods of supporting patients’ emotional health. “We share with our patients that they should live an active life rather than a reactive life,” explains Dr. Duben. Q. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO “LIVE AN ACTIVE LIFE?”
DR. D: Too often we notice that patients who are stressed, unhappy and ulti-
mately unhealthy are reacting to their life rather than acting in a healthy manner. These reactions are caused by an emotional trigger that affects some part of the body. DR. E: Many of our patients consult with us about headaches, indigestion, emotional issues, back pain and hormone imbalance symptoms. They report that after receiving care in our office they get better and stay better. Q. IS THERE A NAME FOR THE TYPE OF TREATMENTS YOU PROVIDE?
We use a technique called NET, Neuro Emotional Technique. NET helps our patients erase stressful reactive patterns in their mind and body. NET is a tool that can help improve many behavioral and physical conditions. DR. E: The memory of the body can lock stresses into muscles and body chemistry and make us sick. It is a scientific fact that psychosomatic disease exists. In our office we help erase these negative connections. DR. D:
Q. WHO SHOULD TRY NET?
DR. D: We check all our patients with NET. That’s because anyone who has been suffering recurring symptoms, with no obvious explanation, may be experiencing a condition related to an emotional component, and NET could help.
DR. E: One particular patient was in a car accident that resulted in neck pain and tension headaches. We cared for her and she returned to her pre-accident condition. But, and here is the interesting part, whenever she drove through the same intersection where her car accident occurred, the symptoms returned! That’s because to her mind and body, that intersection was the cause of her condition rather than the car hitting her. That may sound silly, but our nervous system’s memory is there to protect us from doing things that are harmful. With a series of NET visits, we cleared up this reactive mind-body connection and now that intersection does not affect her at all. Q. WHERE CAN WE LEARN MORE ABOUT
YOUR OFFICE AND TREATMENTS? DR. D: Our website, DocDuben.com, is a good place to learn why our office may be right for you. CVL readers are invited to make an appointment for a complimentary consultation. Together we can discover treatment options that can help you build an active and healthy lifestyle.
Duben Holistic Chiropractic Center is located at 3625 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., Ste. 172 in Westlake Village, CA 91362. Call 805.468.4437 for more information or visit DocDuben.com. 18

THE IMPORTANCE OF CHILDHOOD HEARING TESTING ARTICLE RAYE ANN CLAYTON, AUD
M
ost parents are familiar with the need to screen their newborn’s hearing in the hospital, but after being given the green light, they lack awareness about the importance of testing their children as they grow. Many families think of hearing loss in black and white terms, believing one has either normal hearing or deafness. Actually, hearing loss is much more nuanced. About 1 in 1,000 babies are born with profound deafness, and another 5 in 1,000 are born with significant hearing loss. Other types of childhood hearing loss are not present at birth, but can manifest later due to ear infections, trauma, syndromes, genetic causes or damaging noise levels. According to The American Speech–Language–Hearing Association, children with hearing loss will find it much more difficult than children who have normal hearing to learn vocabulary, grammar, word order, idiomatic expressions and other aspects of verbal communication. According to the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing, all infants and young children should be monitored for developmental auditory behaviors and speech and language development. Those who demonstrate delayed development, regardless of newborn screening outcome, should receive an auditory evaluation to rule out hearing loss. Research shows that untreated hearing loss can have devastating consequences on learning speech and language. For the school-age child, untreated hearing loss is linked to lower outcomes and puts a child at higher risk of failing one or more grades.
EARLY DETECTION IS THE KEY
The good news is that early detection and treatment really works! Children who receive appropriate hearing intervention, such as hearing aids, assistive technology, therapy and/or school accommodations can perform on par with normal-hearing peers. 20
Conejo Valley Lifestyle | June 2016
For school-age children in California, public schools provide hearing screenings in Kindergarten or 1st, 2nd, 5th, 8th and 10th grades, as well as when a child first enters the California public school system or a teacher or staff member is concerned and refers the child for testing. If your child fails a hearing screening at school or in the pediatrician’s office, it’s important to schedule an auditory evaluation with an audiologist. Only an audiologist can determine the type and severity of a hearing loss. WHAT ABOUT EAR INFECTIONS?
Another situation common to parents of toddlers is ear infections. While most isolated incidents of ear infections clear up relatively quickly on their own or with simple antibiotic treatment from a physician, frequent or chronic ear infections warrant hearing testing to determine if the infection is causing hearing loss. This type of frequent/intermittent or chronic hearing loss can cause speech and language delays. If your child is under the care of an otolaryngologist, or ENT physician, and ear tubes are recommended, a referral should be made to an audiologist for pre- and post-operative testing. At Conejo Hearing Center, we specialize in age-appropriate testing methods for pediatrics and can test children 3 years old and up. As the mother of young children, I am passionate about hearing devices and assistive technology to maximize hearing potential for every child and adult. To make an appointment for a hearing test screening, contact Conejo Hearing Center at 818.991.3800. Visit them at Village Green Office Park, 5655 Lindero Canyon Rd #506, in Westlake Village, CA 91362, or online at ConejoHearingCenter.com.

University Village “Brides” Display Wedding Dresses ROMANCE PROVES AGELESS AT RETIREMENT COMMUNITY ARTICLE DONNA HAHN | PHOTOGRAPHY JONI DARRELL
I
n a timeless display of love and romance, 13 wedding gowns stole the show at the University Village Thousand Oaks
retirement community. The gowns—one dating back more than a century—were worn by the residents and their mothers and reflect the fashion of their day. The dresses ranged from Mary Norris’ World War I-era dress worn by her mother in 1914 to Sandra Krakower’s short yellow dress with matching veil and shoes from 1968. Audrey Johnson loaned her mother’s flapper dress from the 1920’s, and Marcia Fogel unpacked the cathedral-length dress she wore in Denver’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in 1949 (think Maria in “The Sound of Music”). The most recent dress was Diane Venable’s traditional white gown from 1974. Norris and Johnson found their mothers’ gowns pre-
served in cedar chests after they died. Johnson’s mother, who worked in the garment industry, made her dress herself. She also made the bridesmaids’ dresses. All the dresses were displayed in the main clubhouse at University Village along with wedding photographs from numerous University Village resident couples, to the delight of many. “The wedding gown display is just a small sampling of the history and amazing life stories of our residents. The gowns are exquisite and in many cases represent the beginning of incredible lives that many of us can only imagine,” says Jayne Austin, activities director for University Village. The wedding gown display can be viewed on the University Village Facebook page. University Village, located at 3415 Campus Dr. in Thousand Oaks, is a continuing care retirement community for people 60 years of age and older offering a variety of housing options and a comprehensive package of services, amenities and activities. Residents also have access to assisted living, memory care and a skilled nursing center. Learn more about University Village at UVTO.com. 22

With such a small graduating class, the ceremony is an intimate event, wherein every student is personally recognized by his or her master teacher, who speaks about their accomplishments and aspirations after high school. The students have completed a rigorous “blended learning” curriculum that included digital and individual instruction, plus small group interaction. Students work from home and on campus several days a week, covering traditional, core subject matter and technology. The alternative high school—grades 9-12—was opened in 2010 and has had many of its students go on to colleges nationwide. JUNE 9—Ladera Elementary School in Thousand Oaks is graduating 61 5th graders. There will also be a breakfast and kickball game with students, parents and teachers. Ladera’s pupils are being guided by the school’s “Dragon Code,” which means Choose character, Own your learning, Demonstrate respect, and Envision success. JUNE 9—Thousand Oaks High School will hold its “Grad Nite” the evening before graduation at Disneyland’s California Adventure. The school’s 540 graduates will receive their diplomas at ceremonies held at the school’s Lancer Stadium the following evening. In May, the school’s newspaper published a map of the United States that noted where its grads would be going to college, with over 96% of the class going on to some form of higher education. JUNE 9—Westlake High School will also have its “Grad Nite” at Disneyland June 8 and the following evening its 566 graduates will receive their “sheepskins.” Of the school’s 30 valedictorians, some will speak on the

It is no surprise that North Ranch Country Club’s wine dinners are top-notch events. As Jordan notes, North Ranch was awarded the coveted CMAA International Wine Society Award of Distinction last year, scoring a 95 out of 100—one of only 14 clubs in America to score 90 or above in 2015. The award is prominently displayed next to an impressive wine cellar that holds more than 500 bottles. The collection contains wines from the major wine-producing regions of the world, easily accessed with different color-coded tags for each country. North Ranch pours over 30 wines by the glass in addition to a wine list that features their high-end collection of bottles, half bottle, large format selections and vintage verticals.
CAKEBREAD CELLARS
Jordan and Karl labored for days creating, preparing and executing the Cakebread pairing dinner, tasting every spice, herb and ingredient featured on the menu and sampling Cakebread wines to match the flavors perfectly. Their objective was to balance the food and wine of each course to create a symbiosis of culinary harmony, with each dish surpassing the previous one until it reached a food and wine crescendo! The sold-out, $125-per-person Cakebread dinner began with approximately 100 members gathering in the clubhouse to enjoy musical entertainment by a talented solo guitar player. Old and new friends sipped a glass of nicely chilled, crisp and clean Cakebread 2014 Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley. The wine’s nose and taste of honeydew melon and citrus were complemented by the Chef's Selection of Hand Passed Canapés: Macadamia Crusted Chicken with Basil Pesto and Apple wrapped in Prosciutto. The five-course dinner began with a spot-on pairing of Cakebread’s THEIR OBJECTIVE WAS 2013 Chardonnay, Napa Valley with TO BALANCE THE FOOD Charred Scallop & Cold Smoked Hamachi with Almond & Garlic AND WINE OF EACH Gazpacho, Chervil, Chive Pearls, COURSE TO CREATE Calabrian Chili Oil and a colorful A SYMBIOSIS OF Micro Orchid. This spicy dish was a great WINE CRESCENDO! way to begin the meal, which could have been a complete and satisfying meal by itself with a larger serving. The Cakebread 2014 Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley, Two Creeks Vineyards was served in the same type of glass as the other wines and was impressive in both aroma and taste. The “Two Creeks Vineyards” refers to a blend of grapes from the Annahala and Apple Barn estate vineyards in the Anderson Valley of Mendocino County. The second course accompanying the Pinot Noir showcased a Seared La Bella Farms Duck Breast with Duck Confit & Sweet Potato Tempura Roll, Thai Basil Beurre Blanc, Charred Iceberg and Thai Chili Gastrique. The rich, full-bodied Pinot Noir complemented the duck breast and tempura roll perfectly with its aromas of berry and cherry plus flavors of black CONTINUED > cherry and plum with a long spicy finish. WINE & DINE
(CON TI N U ED)
The Blanquette De Veau combined Wisconsin Veal Baked in a Sweet Onion with Sundried Tomatoes and English Peas in a Creamy Cognac Sauce topped with Gruyere and served with Local Asparagus & Heirloom Carrots. The sweet onion container cleverly appeared to be a solid food rather than a stew. Cakebread’s 2012 Merlot, Napa Valley had a black cherry nose and hint of toasty oak. It stood up beautifully to the rich flavors of the veal and cognac sauce. The wine was rich and juicy with dark cherry, plum and blackcurrant flavors supported by big tannins and balanced acidity. Not to be overlooked were the local asparagus and heirloom carrots—both very tasty and served in a stylish coat of arms crossed swords arrangement over the Blanquette De Veau. This third course pairing of wine and food was the best… until the fourth course was served! The final pairing of Cakebread 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley with Oak Grilled Prime Dry Aged Rib-Eye was excellent, especially for those who like smoky flavors. The aromas of dark cherry, black fig and scent of oak toast plus flavors of blackberry, boysenberry and fig with a hint of dark chocolate were a perfect match with the last dish. The accompanying Beef Cheek & Smoked Collard Green Ravioli offered a nice contrast to each other and the Rutabaga & Carrot Purée made a very flavorful base. The Roasted Shallot & Bourbon Sauce on top of the Oak Grilled Prime Dry Aged Rib-Eye with the Cabernet Sauvignon was a perfect example of the genius behind the pairing. As club member Dr. Ed Pope commented, “This is great with the smoky flavors in both the smoked collard green ravioli and the cab!” The Pistachio Torte with Browned Butter Pistachio Jaconde, Beet Root Gelee, Chocolate Panna Cotta and Meringue Matchsticks deliciously concluded the five-course dinner. Attending a dinner like this one underscores North Ranch Country Club as an outstanding venue for private dining or larger events. Facing mountains to the north, the club has some of the best views in Westlake Village. Members enjoy the club’s warm atmosphere, five-star dining and exceptional wine program. Club management has reached their goal of being an ultimate wine and dine experience with one of the best wine programs in the nation. he Conejo Valley offers a wonderful lifestyle for families and businesses to grow and prosper.
While its natural beauty and mild temperatures make it an idyllic place to live, it’s the caring for one another that unites the community and creates a haven we proudly call home. Countless people contribute to the betterment of our communities. We feature just a handful of them, representing the best of us, and say “Thank you.”

Benjamin Griffes is a doctor of chiropractic and a health coach with offices in Tarzana and Thousand Oaks. He focuses on helping others maintain pain-free and healthy lifestyles, while also finding time to give back. An active member of numerous organizations, Ben is involved with many fundraisers for nonprofits, such as the YMCA. With Progression Athletics International, he provides sports clinics for underprivileged children, and with Ride Blind America, he escorts sight-impaired athletes on tandem bike rides. He is also a member of the Azusa Pacific University Mexico Outreach Team that annually brings medical aid to Mexicali residents. Ben also finds time for mountain biking, playing a mean harmonica and brewing up some tasty beers of his own design. This year, he’s introducing his first batch of honey wine (mead). Ben says his most important lessons are “Always be curious and ask questions. CAL JOHNSTON
CHAIRMAN, THE JOHNSTON GROUP
Cal Johnston is a very successful business man and visionary. In 1959, he founded The Johnston Group, which launched his amazing career, however, his greatest accomplishment was founding the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley. Twelve years ago, Cal saw a need for local programs that would give school-aged children a safe place to go before and after classes. In particular, for the “latch key” kids of single parents and others, he felt some kind of retreat was necessary to provide them with structure, direction, tutoring and ways to expend their energies in positive, productive ways. Cal, who was orphaned at age 4, learned early on the meaning of responsibility and hard work. His advice: “Be tenacious, find ways to achieve, and don’t quit.” With the Boys & Girls Club, he challenged himself and those around him to build a better tomorrow for the youth of our communities. Under his leadership, this local organization has opened six Clubs on middle school campuses in the Conejo Valley and two at elementary schools in Calabasas. Some 100 employees provide activities and learning experiences for over 5,000 area kids. Cal also recently joined the Board of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles. Their goal is to bring together under one umbrella a number of the Clubs that serve some 10,000 children in the inner-city areas. Cal’s vision is to see 20,000 kids involved by the year 2020. His apropos favorite quote is “Teaching kids to count is fine, but teaching them what counts is best.”

JAY DODWELL TEEN SERVICES COORDINATOR, ALEX FIORE THOUSAND OAKS TEEN CENTER
Jay Dodwell grew up in the Thousand Oaks area. When he was in high school in the early 1980s, there was little for teenagers to do. Kids would hang out at the mall or bowling alley when not in school, which became a concern for parents, city officials and some kids themselves. In 1989, the Alex Fiore Thousand Oaks Teen Center opened, offering thousands of teens a place to congregate and enjoy recreational and educational opportunities. Jay enjoys mentoring the teens and giving them a safe place to interact positively with others. The greatest life lesson for Jay is “be patient in finding your path.” We never know what opportunities may present themselves, and we must be ready for them, he says. Jay didn’t have to think twice when asked about the most important accomplishment in his life. “It’s being happily married for the past 21 years and raising our two boys, John Anthony and Jayden.” According to family tradition, Jay and his sons have first names starting with “J,” as do all of Jay’s four siblings. An avid golfer who shoots in the low 80s and is rightfully proud of his course scoring, Jay says being a long-time mentor to the teens in our area is the card he appreciates most of all.
DR. ROBERT BLAND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, CONEJO COMPASSION COALITION
When there was a need for a homeless shelter or food bank in the Conejo Valley, Bob Bland was there. When a devastating earthquake and tsunami struck Southeast Asia in 2004, Bob was there. When a hurricane hit Haiti, Bob was there, and when Uganda called for help, Bob was there. Bob has spent much of his life giving to those less fortunate than him and supporting efforts locally and around the world to improve the human condition. In February, Bob received a Lifetime Service Award signed by President Obama that reminded us that “Every American has a duty to ourselves, our nation and the world.” The City of Thousand Oaks recently presented Bob with a commendation recognizing his many accomplishments in making every effort “to heal a broken world – one child, one family, one village at a time . . . ” Bob’s most important influences in his life have actually come from those he has helped worldwide. “Their honesty and candid feedback have been an invaluable reality check” that guides his efforts today, he explains. Bob’s most important lesson also motivates him and defines his legacy. “In this life, our calling is not to be successful, but rather to be faithful to the vision of the world as it can be, not as it is.”

LOCAL SUPPORT CRUCIAL TO COMMUNITY THEATRE ARTICLE TRACY MARCYNZSYN | PHOTOGRAPHY ED KRIEGER

or the past 22 years, Cabrillo Music Theatre has served the community by entertaining thousands with their Broadway-style shows produced in our own backyard. As Conejo Valley residents well know, this vibrant community theatre contributes so much more than high-quality stage productions to enhance quality of life in the area. Cabrillo Music Theatre is famous for its many outreach programs that have made a difference in the lives of countless Noah's Ark from "Children of Eden" people, young and old, from all sectors of society. CMT’s community service extends to the U.S. Military and families, underserved students, in-need seniors, nonprofit organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Greater Conejo Valley, rescue animals and local aspiring theatre performers. Thus, when the Board of Directors of Cabrillo Music Theatre announced the suspension of its 2016-2017 season due to funding issues, the community stepped up to help. “An incredible outpouring of love and support for Cabrillo, through posts, letters and phone calls with people expressing their love for Cabrillo and all the many things they’ve done for the community over the years” flooded the offices of Cabrillo Music Theatre following the announcement, says Board Chair Bart Leininger. In addition to their kind words, community members demonstrated their wholehearted support for Cabrillo Music Theatre by providing the needed resources that allowed the show to go on. “We are blessed and fortunate that we’re able to move forward because of the outpouring of love and support from the community,” says Leininger. Thanks to the community, the 2016-17 season will move forward, with three shows, including "Evita," "Sister Act" and "Peter Pan," all in the 1,800-seat Kavli Theatre. As part of the transition, and in order to prevent potential losses, Cabrillo Music Theatre removed the production of Tarzan in the Scherr Forum from the season schedule. The streamlined production schedule allows the Cabrillo board and staff to build on a strategy of engaging new community support for the organization in both fundraising and marketing of the professional, nonprofit community-based theatre group. 38

CMT’s 40-some weeks of productions not only develops local talent and theatre artists, but also helps drive the local economy by increasing visitors (and income) to businesses, restaurants and stores in the area. LOOKING FORWARD
Residents of all ages are sure to be delighted by next month’s premiere production of Disney’s "The Little Mermaid." Running July 15-24, "The Little Mermaid" was the first animated musical to use Broadway composers for the music and it changed the direction of animated movies forever. This brand-new fully developed musical that played on Broadway, in the spirit of "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King," Cabrillo Music Theatre's production of "The Little Mermaid" will be the first in the area! Full of great music, including "Part of Your World," "Kiss the Girl," "Poor Unfortunate Souls" and new songs written for the stage, dance, comedy Scenes from "Children of Eden" and romance, “The Little Mermaid” will take you to places no musical has ever gone before. Cabrillo Music Theatre is grateful for the support of community members and its sponsors, as well as the City of Thousand Oaks for cooperating with its effort to keep community theatre alive and thriving at the Civic Arts Plaza.
“We need the continued support of the public to remain strong and vibrant in the community,” says Leininger, noting that the community’s help will ensure a better and stronger Cabrillo Music Theatre and keep "Broadway in Your Backyard" for years to come! hank you, Charles Dickens, but this isn’t A Tale of Two Cities. It’s the tale of two very different views on investing. The first view, taken by most money managers who want you to “stay the course,” tells how much worse you would have fared if you simply missed the best few days in the past 20 years. Remember, 20 years is over 5,000 trading days. And they’re right! Table 1 shows the full “stay the course” return of the S&P 500 (with dividends) for the past 20 years: $100 K would have grown to over $400 K. But if you had not “stayed the course” and just missed the best 10 days, your account would only be half as much! And it gets worse as the days missed increase. In fact, had you missed 30 or more of the best days, your account would have shown a loss for the 20-year span. I take a very different view. Don’t tell me how much worse off I’d be by missing some of the best days. Instead, tell me how much better off I’d be if I'd avoided some of the worst days. The difference is night and day! Table 2 shows that just avoiding the 10 worst days more than doubles the “stay the course” outcome, and it only gets better from there.
Table 2
This eye-opening contrast stems from “The Arithmetic of Losing,” which says a loss hurts a portfolio more than an equalsized gain helps. For example, a 50% gain can be subsequently wiped out with just a 33% loss. Or, conversely, a 33% loss needs a much larger 50% gain to break even. Bottom line: You need a discipline to help you systematically, unemotionally avoid such losses. “Staying the course” scares the Dickens out of me.

Driver’s Notebook
Ladin Hyundai at the
Thousand Oaks Auto Mall Hyundai Genesis presents the 2016
WHAT'S NEW FOR 2016? ARTICLE BEN MALKIN
T
his review is from the perspective of a consumer who has always owned, leased and driven sedans, my favorite “ride” since I have no need for an SUV or crossover. My sedans have included Mercedes Benz, BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, Mercury and Buick. I have always preferred a reasonable combination of performance and comfort (I’m 6’ 2” and I need my space). Until now I would never have considered looking at a Hyundai as my next choice. Fact is that even after reading some very positive reviews of the Hyundai Genesis in the automotive press it required a surprising test drive for me to decide that a very nicely equipped Hyundai Genesis 3.8 model is at the top of our list to replace our present car. It measures up to or exceeds comparative models from competing luxury brands like Lexus, Infiniti or BMW and does so at a much more attractive price whether you are leasing or buying. It also stands head and shoulders above a comparably priced Volvo sedan. When I went for my test drive I was very impressed by the roomy cabin, easy to use and understand controls and quality of the fit and finish. The sticker price of $43,780 was many thousands of dollars less than comparative brands from Germany, Japan and Cadillac. This was a luxury car for the price of a “near luxury” model. Quoting Edmonds.com: “In the past you might have considered purchasing Hyundai's Genesis luxury sedan on the grounds that it offered strong value and lots of standard features versus its more respected German and Japanese competitors. Those points still ring true, but these days, the 2016 Hyundai Genesis stands on its own as much for its clean styling, refined ride and well-appointed cabin. Would we go so far as to define it as dynamic to drive, but quiet, comfortable and coddling? Without question. You'll be pleasantly surprised by its roomy cabin, and you will breathe a sigh of relief when taking in its simple yet elegant interior layout. This is a car you can get in and drive without first skimming the owner's manual to explain any 'what does that button do?' moments. But luxury and tech features do abound. No other car offers the equipment, interior 44

quality, power, size and sheer presence for the money like the Hyundai Genesis." When I headed up the 101 toward Santa Barbara I cranked up the radio, quickly figured out the easy to use navigation system and was up to 90 MPH before I blinked…a speeding ticket waiting to happen. The power and handling were smooth and effortless. This was a “near luxury” priced car behaving like a high performance luxury German sedan on the autobahn. My round trip from Thousand Oaks to Carpinteria and back was great. The EPA's estimated fuel economy for the rear-drive Genesis 3.8 is 22 mpg in combined driving (18 city/29 highway). This is my next car! Standard features for the Genesis 3.8 include 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic/auto-leveling HID headlights, LED daytime running lights, a rearview camera, heated mirrors, automatic wipers, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless ignition and entry, heated 12-way power front seats with four-way power lumbar, leather upholstery, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a hands-free "smart" trunk, an 8-inch touchscreen interface, a navigation system, real-time traffic, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, Hyundai's Blue Link emergency telematics system, a seven-speaker audio system with a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack, a USB/iPod interface, HD radio and satellite radio. The Genesis 3.8 can be equipped with three option packages: Signature, Tech and Ultimate. The Signature package (which is what I drove) adds a panoramic sunroof, LED fog lights, auto-dimming exterior mirrors, blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert systems, parking guides for rearview camera, ventilated front seats, driver memory functions, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a power rear sunshade, manual side window shades and a premium Lexicon 14-speaker surround-sound audio system. This keeps your sticker price in the $43,000 range and is about all that I would want. There are also the additional package options, All Wheel Drive and the Ultimate V8 model. For more information, contact Ladin Hyundai at 3725 Auto Mall Drive, in Thousand Oaks, CA 91362, call 866.415.0727 or visit LadinHyundai.com.

Aiding Animals in Need
THE LITTLE ANGELS PROJECT ARTICLE DARLENE GEEKIE, RVT
A
s a veterinary practice owner and licensed veterinary technician, I have often struggled with how to help those experiencing financial distress with their veterinary care without putting financial strain on my practice. Last year alone, we donated over $40,000 in veterinary care for rescues, shelters, wildlife, 501(c)3 exotic facilities and financially distressed clients. As a growing practice this has become a challenge to sustain—but we don't want to stop! We have created a nonprofit initiative called the Little Angels Project to help all animals in need. Too many times our veterinary staff has been faced with the difficult discussion of "what can we do?” Your donations to our Angel Fund Project will help us change that to “how can we help?” Candidates for the fund will be selected based on medical need, potential for a favorable outcome and application approval. The decision-making team includes our owner, associate doctor, office manager and a board-member representative. And it doesn't end there! We hope that those needing this temporary help will be able to pay the kindness forward by donating
to the fund when they are able. The Angel Fund is here to help, not to offer free veterinary services. Some of the animals we have helped include Evan the alpaca, who needed surgery for torn ligaments in his knee; Mortis, a tortoise with a large life-threatening intestinal blockage; Malika the elephant, born with life-threatening allergies and in need of an ultrasound and full medical workup; Kolar the tiger, battling cancer in his later years; and countless wildlife, shelter/rescue dogs and shelter cats. In 2016, we hope to secure enough donations to expand into a building space next to Veterinary Angels Medical Center. This will allow us to start a spay-and-neuter program, treat farm animals in need and hold rescue wellness clinics. We believe this project will make our community a better place for people and animals alike. Hopefully, the idea will encourage other veterinary facilities to do the same for their communities. Every dollar makes a difference—please help contribute what you can toward our cause!

What Dads Need to Know about Testosterone ARTICLE SHARON NORLING, MD
A
good father makes all the difference in a child's life. He's a pillar of strength, support and discipline. His work is endless and, oftentimes, thankless. But in the end, the efforts pay off in the sound, well-adjusted children he raises. Few things are as valuable as a father who will do everything he can and provide all the tools he has to ensure his children can become better than him. Being a dad is one of the most important and rewarding responsibilities a man can have. Do you have the right tools? SYMPTOMS TO WATCH
How are you feeling? Are you experiencing fatigue, weight gain, depression, irritability, decreased well-being, lack of motivation or muscle loss? How about low libido or erectile dysfunction? These symptoms may indicate hormonal imbalance or low testosterone levels, conditions which can keep you from being the great father you aspire to be. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a solution? Well, there is: Get your hormones (testosterone, thyroid, adrenal function and neurotransmitter) tested. Once tested, natural effective therapies can be implemented to balance your hormones and normalize your testosterone. TESTOSTERONE MATTERS
Okay, let’s be honest. It is usually issues with low libido and erectile dysfunction that bring male patients into the office to be tested and treated. Significant health risks exist in men with low levels of testosterone. If the testosterone level is below 300, there is a three and a half times increased risk of cancer mortality, double the risk of a heart attack and increased risk for Type 2 diabetes, as well as inflammatory diseases, osteoporosis and obesity. 48
Conejo Valley Lifestyle | June 2016
Decades of research have shown the health benefits of normalizing testosterone. A recent study presented at the American College of Cardiology in April showed that after three years, 125 non-testosterone therapy patients suffered major adverse cardiovascular events, compared to 38 medium-dose and 22 high-dose patients. Low testosterone is generally treated by injections or bioidentical hormonal crème. One of my mentors, Harvard Professor Dr. Morgantaler, has spent 40 years of his life studying testosterone and he recommends testosterone levels range from 600-800. These are the comments I hear in my office when men are treated for low testosterone. • “I feel like myself again.” • “I feel normal.” • “My wife enjoys spending time with me again.” • “I have more patience with my children.” • “I don’t have to plan for sex like I did with the pills.” • “I feel younger.” • “I wake up with excitement for my day.” • “I’ve taken up my hobby again.” • “I feel alive.” So, dads, get your testosterone levels tested and consider appropriate treatment if your levels are lower than they should be. You deserve to be happy, energetic, focused and healthy so you can be the best dad you can be! Dr. Sharon Norling practices Advanced Functional Medicine in Westlake Village. Parting Thoughts
Dads are just Grown Up Sons MOTHERS, REMEMBER THAT OUR SONS GROW UP TO BE FATHERS ARTICLE KIM PAGANO
T
he men we love play such an important role in our lives. I have been so fortunate to have my dad as one of my best friends. Growing up he was always there for me to talk to, and he always has the best advice and so many stories to tell. I still use his lessons every day. I use them so often that they have come full circle, and I find myself giving his advice back to him. My dad always gave me strength to carry on and accomplish my dreams and goals. When times get tough, which they certainly have, my dad reminds me to “pick yourself up, dust yourself off and carry on." My dad also taught me that if you don't know or understand something, you can go and get help from an expert in whatever industry you are pursuing. In our family circle, my dad is the one who is full of fun, feeling that life was too serious and that you needed to find laughter in something, if not everything. When it started raining, my dad would take us for ice cream. We had a lot of fun. We would be in the middle of having dinner, and he would make us laugh so much! He would take his hand and pretend to “catch” our laughs and keep them in a cup. We could only let our laughter out again once he uncovered the cup… and when he did, we roared even louder. It is funny, the things in life that we remember. What things do you remember from your fathers, grandfathers or other male figures that you have looked up to in your life? Do you have 58

sons? It is important to remember that our sons are most likely going to grow up to be dads. Are you raising them to be good fathers? I am blessed with two sons with completely different personalities, both amazing in their own ways. One day, when they are fathers, I hope they carry with them the good values given to them by their father and their upbringing. I also have two wonderful sonin-laws, and I am blessed by the way they father my grandchildren and cherish my daughters. I believe we are all leaders in our families. If you are just starting out or are finished with your parenting, please realize what an important role you have in leading by example. Our children are watching and learning. One day you will be able to see how your life experiences shaped your children. I'm grateful for the experiences my dad has given me and I look forward to the ways in which my husband and sons will continue to share positive experiences like mine with their own children. Kim Pagano is brought to you by the award-winning talk radio station AM 1590 KVTA. She brings you the Brighter Side of the 805 Saturdays from 6-8 a.m. and 2-3 p.m., reminding us how important it is to "Look Good, Feel Good, Do Good." Kim is a hair therapist in Westlake, a motivational speaker, a mother and so much more.
