Celebrating Our First Year I

t’s hard to believe that with this issue we will be one year old! Twelve issues under our belts and many more on the way. Robin and I owe a great deal to all of the wonderful people who have helped us accomplish what we have so far. Most importantly, our wonderful editor, Tracy Marcynzsyn, without whom none of this would have been possible; she has helped us shape the content of Conejo Valley Lifestyle so we could fulfill our editorial mission and bring meaningful articles to our readers. When we told her that we wanted to make coverage of the work being done by the many nonprofits in our community one of the main pillars of our magazine, Tracy seized the initiative and through her energetic research and writing and that of the talented group of journalists she has brought to the table, we have been able to make Giving Back a topic that continues to resonate with our estimated 70,000 readers every month. Another thing that we believe makes Conejo Valley Lifestyle special is the high quality layout and production that happens halfway across the country in Overland Park, Kansas. The Lifestyle production team turns out an intuitively easy-to-read and beautiful premium quality magazine that reflects the ethos of our Conejo and Santa Rosa Valley communities. Thanks guys! Finally, a huge thank you to our advertisers! Because our readers come first, we try very hard to only bring marketing messages to them that reflect the highest quality in service or products. Thank you for being there for us and our readers. So here we are in July, the start of the summer. Time to travel!! We hope you enjoy the articles on Ojai and New Orleans as much as we enjoyed living them. It is also time to celebrate July 4. In the midst of an increasingly contentious and very negative election year, please try to focus on what makes our country great. If you want to, please email me at Ben.Malkin@LifestylePubs.com with your positive comments about what is great about the U.S. With your permission, we will post them on our Facebook page.

WHAT YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT YOUR THYROID ARTICLE SHARON NORLING, MD

re you tired, depressed, cold or irritable, and do you experience swollen joints and poor memory? Maybe you are having diffi-

THYROID 101

Your thyroid gland controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes protein and works with the sex hormones, adrenal glands and neurotransmitters (blood chemistry that affects our moods, mental function and physical well-being). Perhaps you have had your thyroid lab done and your doctor said it was “normal.” You look good on paper, but you know you are not well. Maybe you have even noticed hair loss. “It’s probably stress,” your doctor says, and

T

he community turned out in full force to support animals and share a day full of fun at the 6th Annual There’s No Place Like Hope Family Picnic & Hoedown, presented by Rosemary Allison, Estates Director for Coldwell Banker. Animal lovers of all ages showed up to the all-day event at Santa Rosa Valley Park to watch equestrian performances and historic re-enactments, enjoy live music, eat delicious food and delight in the many family activities, all while raising funds for horses in need. Created by Kimme Black in 2011, the No Place Like Hope Picnic & Hoedown has grown into an annual anticipated family event benefiting different horse rescues in the area. The picnic draws thousands of visitors to the Santa Rosa Valley every spring to bring funding for, and awareness of, the plight of America’s treasured companions to the public conscience. Proceeds from this year’s event benefitted the Saffyre Sanctuary, Inc., a nonprofit horse rescue and rehabilitation program that cares for horses that have been neglected, abused or abandoned. Located in Los Angeles, the Saffyre Sanctuary provides opportunities for horses to experience another career or a well-deserved retirement where appropriate. “Saffyre Sanctuary was honored to be the beneficiary of the 2016 There’s No Place Like Hope Picnic! In their most successful year ever, this awesome fun-filled event brought our communities together with our mutual passion and love of the horses! Thank you all so much for supporting our mission,” says the foundation on its website, SaffyreSanctuary.org. The event also raised awareness about the work of Tedi Tate and the Warhorse Alliance and Steeds of Light. Founded in 2009, the 16

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | July 2016

Warhorse Alliance provides therapeutic programs for veterans and military families. Through the use of the EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association) model, Tedi and Toni Richmond facilitate the horses assisting humans with healing. Their Steeds of Light program helps people in need, including teenagers and battered women by providing healing interaction and therapy with the horses. “Through experiencing healing with the aid of horses, we are led over the bridge from loss of direction to insight and wholeness. Our mission is to serve a diversity of people, honoring their differences in ideas and culture through all changes and phases of life. The values we hold are at the center of everything we do. We believe in the highest quality of work that enriches our clients’ learning experiences and their relationships with others,” according to the organization’s website. “We embrace the EAGALA model using the assistance of horses to help clients become more self-aware; empower their choices; build self-care skills and effective communication. All these skills can be instrumental in overcoming behavioral issues and their possible distractions (such as anxiety, depression, grief, co-dependency and anger to name a few).” The annual There’s No Place Like Hope picnic is open to the public with free admission. An old-fashioned pie auction hosted by Rosemary Allison was a highlight of this year’s event, along with equine performances, Annabelle the pink tractor-pulled hay wagon, dancing, singing and socializing. Find out more about the event at TheHopePicnic.com.

Casual Fine Dining. You’re Always Welcome. WHAT IS NEW ZEALAND CUISINE?

Back in New Zealand, whether surrounded by the backdrop of the Auckland harbour or the rolling hills of green grass and the smell of feijoa trees, locals are accustomed to fresh and organic meals at home and at the local restaurants. In one of Auckland City’s top restaurants or at the nearby pizza bar, dining out is not just another outing but a oneof-a-kind experience complete with top quality ingredients, beautifully plated dishes, and most importantly, an environment designed for the laid back Kiwi lifestyle. Many restaurants flaunt their trustworthy kitchens with open passes, allowing the customers to view the chefs from their seats. While a typical United States kitchen relies on pepper and other strong seasonings, the Kiwi chef prepares dishes designed to emphasize the natural flavor of the food and allow those flavors to pop.

ORGANIC, FRESH, & ALLERGY FRIENDLY.

Our menu consists of locally sourced handgrown and predominantly organic produce; free-range and grass-fed organic meats; and fresh seafood that’s flown in directly from New Zealand and served less than 48 hours fresh out of the water. Our kitchen and waitstaff are dedicated to providing a welcoming and safe environment for guests with allergies and dietary restrictions. Whether you’re gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, vegetarian, or otherwise, our chefs are always happy to accomodate you without sacrificing the flavors of the dish.

playing at her lips as a light breeze dances across the riding arena. It’s been just four weeks since she first carted her young charge, a good-natured 12-year-old boy on the autism spectrum, to Ride On’s 13-acre Newbury Park location, but she marvels at the progress he’s made since first meeting the paint pony he’s about to mount for today’s riding lesson. “This is a pretty incredible place,” Magido says. “What they do here with the kids – the difference it makes is just astronomical.” Under the watchful eyes of Magido and a team of kindly volunteers, Josh Bennett takes an adaptive riding class once a week at Ride On, a therapeutic horsemanship facility that focuses on improving the lives of children with disabilities through horseback riding. 18

e all know about New Orleans’ recent history: devastation in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, followed by an ongoing story of what can only be described as a miraculous recovery. The losses from Katrina in property damage and, more importantly, of life and terrible displacement were unimaginable. The recovery that a visitor sees, both physically and in terms of the spirit of the people of New Orleans is truly inspiring and amazing. In short, NOLA is back!! As an avid traveler, I have been a fairly regular visitor to New Orleans, dating back to when I was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base. A frequent 90-mile drive to

NEW ORLEANS NOLA from Biloxi was a weekend necessity. Besides the food and music, the real attraction of a visit to New Orleans is that it’s almost like visiting another country. The culture, a gumbo mix of French, Spanish, American and African defined as Cajun or Creole, is unique. Unlike in any other part of the U.S., “diversity” was embraced before it became politically correct. I love it!! Having visited and enjoyed many different places, I still find New Orleans a very special place and always return for more. Our latest visit was for my son’s wedding. He and his bride fell in love in NOLA and even though they are both from somewhere else, they decided on a destination wedding. The ceremony was at the New Orleans Museum of Art and the reception was held inside the museum. We danced

and dined to the Rebirth Brass Band and the Soul Rebels, surrounded by art by Picasso, Modigliani and Cezanne. WOW!! What a blast! Needless to say, New Orleans is a great place for a destination wedding and gives guests a darned good excuse to visit New Orleans! SIGHTS & SOUNDS MARDI GRAS

Similar to festivals in Rio de Janeiro or Venice, Mardi Gras is a much anticipated celebration in NOLA. Held 47 days before Easter, Mardi Gras can occur on any Tuesday from February 3 through March 9.

If you enjoy parades, outrageous costumes, being surrounded by exuberant and noisy fellow parade watchers and witnessing an event that completely reflects the character of the community, then Mardi Gras is for you. The different parades seem to last forever, and the more adventurous dress up in their own costumes while viewing the parades. If you are traveling with children, you should be aware that kids don't belong in the French Quarter or on Canal Street during Mardi Gras. Take the family to St. Charles Avenue between First Street and Napoleon Avenue instead, where the parade goers are mainly families.

FOOD

New Orleans offers the best of Creole and Cajun food, such as beignets with chicory coffee or Po Boys. YUM! Forget your diet for a few days and indulge. I like to browse OpenTable.com for dining choices, or you can simply walk into any of the hundreds of restaurants and find good food. It’s required in NOLA. So-so restaurants do not last very long in this food mecca. An old favorite, Commander’s Palace, was as amazing as ever. It started with impeccable service, followed for me by their classic Pecan-Crusted Gulf Fish with crushed sweet corn, spiced pecans, petite herbs and

Prosecco poached crabmeat, and for Robin, Chef Tory’s Three-Course Special that featured a choice of delicious entrees: Lyonnaise Gulf Fish, Roasted Mississippi Flounder or Chicory Coffee Lacquered Texas Quail. The Lyonnaise Gulf Fish was delicious. Located in the Garden District, Lisette served up an excellent family dinner for 10 guests, offering French-focused food and excellent service. Nola, Emeril Lagasse’s acclaimed “casual and funky” restaurant, hosted a rehearsal dinner group of 90 from the wedding party. Instead of typical banquet food for a large party, every guest was served a gourmet dinner. Of course,

we had to have breakfast at Brennan’s. Eggs Hussarde is a Brennan's original of house-made English muffins, coffee-cured Canadian bacon, hollandaise and marchand de vin sauce. It doesn’t get any better! We also had brunch at the Palace Café and were entertained by a traditional jazz trio. They played all of my requests. I had so much fun that I forget what we ate! Cafe Amelie, a beautiful courtyard restaurant on Royal Street, serves the best pulled pork Po Boy on the planet. They call it a Cochon De Lait sandwich. I call it Killer! Martinis in the bar at Mr. B’s is another must. During our last evening, it was just Robin and me. We were ready for something simpler… like a great steak. The Chop House

New Orleans nailed it, serving up a delicious Prime Rib Eye, fries and salad along with the perfect steakhouse ambiance. MUSIC

There is more to NOLA than just food (maybe). Frenchman Street is the center of music in New Orleans. The street’s eclectic mix of people, bars, restaurants, shops, art galleries and live music comes together like a gumbo to form one of the most energetic and cultural hotspots in the world—24/7, 365 days a year, the music never stops. On any given night you will find the best jazz, funk, blues and everything in between. If you are there at midnight, be ready to party because it’s just getting started. CONTINUED >

NEW ORLEANS (CON TI N U ED)

Situated in the heart of the French Quarter on St. Peter Street, the Preservation Hall venue presents intimate, acoustic New Orleans jazz concerts 350 nights a year, featuring ensembles from a current collective of 100+ local jazz practitioners. These musicians are all “master” quality. They share their love for jazz, the original American art form, with their audience. We packed the room, and for an incredible hour were lifted into music heaven. We danced and jumped for joy. AND MORE

You might think that all we ever do in New Orleans is eat great food and party. That’s not too far from the truth, but not surprisingly, there is a whole lot more going on. The National World War II Museum, for instance, is a real gem. It tells the story of the American experience of that war, including why it was fought and how it was won. The first time we visited the main exhibit was an extensive study of D-Day. I was a history major and I’ve read extensively about World War II. Robin’s father fought the war

from Normandy all the way to Germany. We were impressed by the depth and quality of the exhibition. The museum is ranked by Trip Advisor as the #1 attraction in New Orleans. You can also take enjoyable tours of plantations, the Garden District, the French Quarter, the unique and spooky cemeteries or my favorite Swamp Tour, where you can feed an alligator his favorite snack, a hot dog. It’s also fun to spend an afternoon in Jackson Square where you can buy everything from trinkets to paintings or stroll down Royal Street and check out its great mix of shops and enjoy the many talented street musicians. Far from a comprehensive review of everything NOLA has to offer, these are just a few of my favorite things to see and do in the area. Visit once and you will surely keep coming back for your own favorites. Happy Trails!

hen you’re looking for a place to retreat for an afternoon or an entire weekend, Ojai is your answer. Less than an hour’s drive from the Conejo Valley, Ojai is a hidden jewel of a town, cradled by the Topatopa Mountains in a picturesque valley. First named Ojai, aka “Valley of the Moon,” by the Chumash Indians, Ojai’s natural beauty attracts artistic types of all sorts who find peace and solace in this mountain paradise. Natural hot springs, breathtaking hiking trails and year-round waterfalls make Ojai a Shangri-La of sorts, which explains why Frank Capra aptly chose the town as the idyllic setting in his famous 1937 movie, “Lost Horizon.” Arriving in Ojai does evoke a feeling of euphoria, especially for visitors discovering the area’s incredible natural beauty for the first time. Even the architecture of the city center mimics 26

the surreal and reverent beauty of the valley town with its artistic design inspired to enthrall and co-exist in harmony with the natural surroundings. Driving into town along E. Ojai Avenue brings into sight the 65-foot-tall Ojai Post Office bell tower, welcoming one and all with its hourly tolling 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and patriotic tunes at noon. Built in 1917, the Spanish tower was designated as Ventura County Historical Landmark No. 26 in 1975, along with a sycamore tree in Libbey Park down the street. Donated to the city by Ohio glass magnate Edward Drummond Libbey, Libbey Park is home to the Libbey Bowl, an “almost enchanted venue” nestled among a grove of trees. Its 973 seats all offer a great view of the stage, and the lush lawn is a great place for a picnic while enjoying musical events and productions, including Rick Springfield on July 10.

Shop SHOP

That special Ojai feeling is evident in its varied eclectic shops, art galleries and specialty restaurants. Strolling through the Village Marketplace at the center of town offers an afternoon of delights to thrill wanderers of all ages. The Rainbow Bridge Natural Foods Market is one such treasure for visitors and locals alike. Known as “a community gathering place,” this iconic downtown market offers healthy, wholesome food and sustainable, ethically produced goods to the Ojai community. Don’t miss their organic teas and spices located down the ramp behind the produce department. This market is an absolute haven for the health-conscious, who can easily spend hours browsing the array of health-boosting, life-affirming products. Find them at 211 E Matilija Street, or get a glimpse of their goods at RainbowBridgeOjai.com. Starting in 1874 as the town hardware store, Rains of Ojai has evolved into a specialty department store offering men’s and women’s

clothing, gifts and gourmet goods for the home, outdoors and pets. Located at 218 E. Ojai Avenue, Rains of Ojai offers something for everybody. A local favorite shopping destination, Rains of Ojai’s visitors can access their wares online at RainsOfOjai.com when they can’t make it to town. Perhaps one of the sweetest things about Ojai is the Heavenly Honey produced here by Jeff and Barbara Haskins, whose family has been harvesting honey for the public since 1979. Their Orange Blossom honey is sourced from local bees and they also offer Alfalfa, Buckwheat, Clover, Sage and Wildflower varieties. Call 805.207.4847 to make an appointment to visit their tasting room, weekends 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or find them online at HeavenlyHoney.co.

Adhering to the idea that “Food is love made visible,” Suzanne’s Cuisine’s menu includes a variety of Italian and French-influenced dishes, and “the best Mussels Provençale,” according to CVL publisher Ben Malkin, who is still talking about the scrumptious meal! ommunity dog lovers recently celebrated the official opening of three new neighborhood offleash areas (OLAs) with a unique ribbon-cutting ceremony. Two dogs “volunteered” to hold the ribbon, while others participated in a game of chase over, under and around the ribbon holders. A mega ball toss featured 20 dogs chasing tennis balls thrown at the same time, and a beginner’s agility course provided an opportunity for dogs to try the sport. Launched as a temporary six-month pilot program spearheaded by the Conejo Off-Leash Area (COLA) Friends, the three OLAs were made permanent after a successful six months of use by the community. Located in existing neighborhood parks (Kimber, Estella and Walnut Grove), the OLAs have proven to enhance community interaction. “In addition to providing a safe place for our dogs to run and play off leash, the OLAs also allow for neighbors to meet and visit with each other while the dogs play,” said one community supporter and COLA member. The nonprofit, community-run organization COLA and the Conejo Recreation & Park District collaborated on the creation and maintenance of the neighborhood OLAs. With a mission to “promote enjoyable and safe use of Conejo Valley off-leash areas and support fun and educational opportunities that lead to positive canine-human interactions,” COLA seeks to facilitate the establishment of more off-leash areas in the community. To get involved as an OLA Ambassador or to donate funds for the installation of drinking fountains at the existing OLAs, visit ConejoOffLeash.org.

Financial Buzz

DO YOU STILL NEED AN “A-B” TRUST? ARTICLE ROCKY MILLS

L

ikely not. First, what is an “A-B” Trust? Up until a few years ago, it was a very popular way to take advantage of both spouses’ estate tax exemption and pass along a larger share of assets to their beneficiaries. Let’s take the case of John and Mary Smith. They’re married, have a net worth of $20 million, and a decade or so ago they set up a living trust that, upon the first death, turns into a pair of sub-trusts (“A” and “B”). Let’s say that John dies first, at a time when both John and Mary were entitled to a $1 million estate-tax exemption. DR. JOHN A. HORTON: Westlake’s Physician for the Stressed ARTICLE KEN PHILLIPS

D

Dr. John Horton

r. John A. Horton is a general practice physician in Westlake Village committed to preventive medicine and developing an integrated, holistic approach to treating patients. He focuses much of his attention on helping to eliminate and manage people's stress levels, because he believes stress opens the door to illness and disease. A graduate of Duke University’s prestigious School of Medicine in 1970, Dr. Horton has spent much of his professional career developing his skill in the biopsychosocial model. In practice, the model attributes disease causation to the intricate interaction of biological factors, such as genetics; psychological factors, like mood, personality and behavior; and social factors, such as cultural and family. In 1989, Dr. Horton co-founded the medical group of Hanzelik, Horton and Daya in Westlake Village, where he works with each person he sees to integrate all aspects of their lives—biological, mental and social. He shows patients how to use their inner strengths, shield themselves from stress and gain balance and wisdom to more fully enjoy their lives. “Life favors us loving and appreciating it. This is built into us,” he says. “We can discover and nurture these abilities, which can help protect us from problems of chronic stress.” While maintaining his medical practice in Westlake Village, Dr. Horton was asked to co-direct an outpatient hospice in the Valley. He found that most people living out their last days suffered immensely and unnecessarily due to the stress of their circumstances. The patients’ families were also overly burdened with the realities they faced. He set about to help ease the pain and anxiety through his counsel. Later, Dr. Horton brought this experience and understanding to Thousand Oaks as a founding board member of Our Community House of Hope (OCHH), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, end-of-life residence. The mission of OCHH is to Our Community House of Hope's provide “a loving home for those who are dying and educate Pinwheel Celebration the community on end-of-life issues.” 2016 lifts spirits. 42

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | July 2016

The aim of the home is to provide the very best, continuous care to those in their final stages of life so they may die with dignity and comfort, but never alone. They believe families and friends also deserve as much care as those dying and that “death should be a part of a personal story rather than a medical event.” Dr. Horton hopes to expand the operations of OCHH, which operates solely on donations. “No one is ever turned away due to income,” says Dr. Horner. “This is a wonderful legacy for patients, their families and friends, which emphasizes psychological and social care for a graceful conclusion of one’s life.” In addition to Dr. Horton’s medical practice, he is passionate about imparting his knowledge through seminars, lectures and workshops. In July, he is going to conduct a health and well-being seminar with noted sports psychologist Tim Gallwey to discuss ideas and tools to help people steer away from stress by tapping into their own inner strengths and resources. Dr. Horton also loves sharing time with his wife Stella, engaging in conversation, playing golf, swimming and hiking. Then, too, he enjoys writing. With his business partner Dr. Edd Hanzelik, Dr. Horton co-authored a book with Gallwey titled, The Inner Game of Stress: Outsmart Life’s Challenges and Fulfill Your Potential. The book offers a unique, empowering guide to overcoming such stresses as fear, selfdoubt, pain, frustration and worry. Gallwey’s premise is that, like in any athletic competition, strength comes from within. He believes the “game” is mastered and we succeed when we can handle the internal obstacles produced by stress. Dr. Horton is quick to point out that we don’t have to be elite athletes—or athletic at all—to keep the game of life in perspective and end up a winner. “We need to change the playing field. Life is for enjoying, not for reacting to everything,” he says. “In the book, we talk about how stress attacks every aspect of our well-being. Our negative self-talk undermines our daily lives and makes us sick—mentally and physically. Pressure is inevitable, but we can shield against the stress that comes with it by learning to properly and healthily rest, relax and trust in ourselves,” he explains. Dr. Horton draws his inspiration and clarity from the words of his friend and teacher Prem Rawat, who believes, “Ninety-nine percent of well-being comes from inside.” And Dr. Horton is intent upon helping people understand and effectively deal with chronic stress, so it doesn’t keep them from being all they can be.

Parting Thoughts

You Don’t Know What You’ve Got

‘Till It’s Gone WORDS KIM PAGANO

T

here are many roads to your summer fun! Even a staycation can be a great option. I just read that as a parent you can expect to get 18 summers with your kids. How do we make them the best with time flying by? When looking ahead to your summer plans, why not start contacting some relatives or close friends you might not have been able to visit in the past year? If your summer schedule is already filling up, do not underestimate what you can get done in a single day. Starting an adventure early in the morning and booking a one-night stay can feel like a whole weekend trip if you plan correctly. Talk to your family and get their ideas so that everyone has some skin in the game. Our collaboration has spawned some amazing and unforgettable trips! HERE ARE SOME IDEAS:

First look into airline miles or American Express points and hotel deals, all of which can help keep the cost down. You may even score a free hotel breakfast! Look into timeshares that are not being used or even vacation home properties. Many of these offers are all-inclusive, so don’t be afraid to ask! If you know you are the type of person to “enjoy the journey,” consider renting a motorhome or enjoying a relaxing evening staycationing by your pool. You would be surprised how even a day trip complete with sightseeing or a quick drive to a nearby beach or lake adds adventure to your summer vacation.

that you always have extra room for unexpected purchases, or better yet, have your purchases shipped to your house! A lot of stores offer free shipping nowadays. WHAT I’VE LEARNED

Always have a plan! I have found that if you have no plans, chances are you will not get to or fully enjoy any of your destinations. When traveling to new towns, before booking any activities, make sure you check out the discounts that the city has to offer so that you can catch the best deals. When my kids were young, I always reserved the last month at home to prepare for school. I wanted somewhat of a calm month to help with the transition into the new school year. We started back with a tutor to get my kids thinking about school again. That way the vacations we took in the months prior could be fully enjoyed. We were all able to shut our minds off without having to worry about school yet. Lastly, make it your goal to create memories. As my kids are all older, I am grateful for all of the summer vacations that we took. I am still planning trips, but this time with my children AND grandchildren. It has been so exciting to see how our family vacation has grown. Remember to be flexible and look for the golden nuggets.

YOUR SUMMER CHECKLIST

Make sure your hotel has a refrigerator so you can bring back leftovers or save money on snacks if you are traveling with kids. A cooler can serve the same purpose. Before leaving, purchase all of your sun protection and sun wear, as these items are typically more expensive at hotels. Bring a fold-up bag in your suitcase so 50
