Lifestyle Letter

A Year of Healthy Growth J

ust one year ago we launched the first issue of Conejo Valley Lifestyle Magazine into the community, showcasing the local jazz dynamo Bonnie Bowden and recognizing the Ronald Reagan library as a rich historical resource for all ages. Since that inaugural August issue, the people, places, businesses and events that make Conejo Valley the gem that it is have filled our pages. From the phenomenal community leaders, men and women who step up to selflessly serve those in need, to the inspirational and accomplished individuals and businesses that provide essential and specialty products and services that improve our lives in so many ways and the countless charitable organizations in the area, we have thoroughly enjoyed bringing you the best and the greatest the Conejo Valley has to offer. Reflecting on the past naturally leads to thinking about and planning the future, and we are very excited about continuing to grow and serve the Conejo Valley with informative and engaging articles featuring our community, including the achievements of your fabulous neighbors and the incredible happenings to participate in throughout the year. As we all know, it takes a village to accomplish greatness, and publishing a quality magazine is no exception. The dedication, enthusiasm and talents of our publishers, Ben Malkin and Robin Chesler, coupled with their drive to excel while serving the community and helping others have forged a strong foundation for Conejo Valley Lifestyle to grow and blossom in its first year and beyond. Our family of local advertisers, talented writers and photographers, along with our capable production and sales staff all play a huge part in creating a magazine to be proud of, as a tribute and reflection of the wonderful community we call home. Thank you for your support! Here’s to another year of growth and greatness for us all!

Testosterone & Oxytocin

ARTICLE DR. SHARON NORLING

W

omen need to understand that men require “cave time” to wind down when they come home and flop down on the couch in front of the TV or read the paper. That is how they replenish their testosterone, and disturbing them too soon will not allow them to adequately restore their hormone levels. When a man’s testosterone level is adequate, he is able to be the “emergency man” in urgent situations where he needs to focus keenly, step up and solve a problem. In fact, solving problems is so satisfying that it may cause some men’s testosterone levels to actually rise, while stress hormones like cortisol decrease. For women, a release of oxytocin makes them feel safe and protected. They become more nurturing and cooperative. This nurturing, coupled with feelings of being nurtured, further raises oxytocin levels. Small amounts of testosterone will also help women feel more energetic, sexy and capable. 16

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | August 2016

STRESS & THE SEXES When trying to reduce or deal with stress, men release testosterone and women release oxytocin (a pituitary hormone). Ironically, high cortisol levels can interfere with the normal production of both testosterone and oxytocin, hampering both men and women from their attempts at stress reduction. On the other hand, oxytocin doesn’t help men deal with stress and can even bring their testosterone levels down. Oxytocin is the hormone that rises in women and men after sexual orgasm and makes them sleepy. Estrogen and progesterone are commonly thought of as women’s hormones, however, many are surprised to learn that testosterone is also a female hormone. Replacing testosterone in menopausal women has been shown in research studies to increase energy, libido and sense of well-being.

When men get home and head to their “man cave” (or do whatever they prefer for relaxation), their stress levels drop. When women get home from work, their stress levels often rise even further as they face the pressures of all the things that need to be done at home (dinner, laundry, childcare, homework, etc.). They can’t understand how men can just sit on the couch or read the paper when there is so much to do. Studies show that stress levels of cortisol while at work are twice as high for women as they are for men, and that difference typically becomes even greater when they get home. This may be related to their husbands on the couch. Men don’t understand why women get so upset, and they don’t even typically notice the things that need to be done without being told. In fact, men will frequently procrastinate about doing things until they get a sense of danger or risk, which triggers their testosterone levels, giving them even greater stress relief. Women tend to plan ahead, which stimulates oxytocin release, making them feel considerate and caring, which triggers even more oxytocin. Happiness, moods and libido are also related to neurotransmitter imbalances. If dopamine, nor-epinephrine and epinephrine are low, libido decreases. These neurotransmitters can be tested and balanced with targeted effective nutrients. Relationships are better if the sex hormones and neurotransmitters are balanced. Additional options also exist to increase libido, like scream crème for women. Men need sex for stress relief. Women need stress relief for sex. My research shows that men that help women with children and housework have more sex. With such polar primal hormonal responses and feelings, it is little wonder that men and women have trouble understanding one another! As balanced hormones play such a big part in increased well-being, consider getting your hormone levels checked, in the name of love. Dr.

24-year-old, Jose, was struck with a blinding headache — the worst pain he had ever experienced. Jose was brought to a local hospital and was subsequently transferred to Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center for a higher level of care. Jose was in a state of coma upon arrival, where doctors discovered a hemorrhage in his brain stemming from an arteriovenous malformation (AVM), a jumble of abnormally formed blood vessels. This rare condition required a two step treatment — inserting a catheter into a blood vessel in the groin and threading it up to the AVM to block off blood flow. Next, neurosurgeons

performed microsurgery aided by the magnification provided by operative microscopes. Advanced technology, expertise, and the precision of our neurosurgeons resulted in the successful removal of Jose’s AVM without disturbing surrounding brain tissue and causing irreperable damage. The swift intervention and specialized care provided by Los Robles Hospital’s neurointerventionists, neurosurgeons, critical care doctors, and staff, enabled Jose to return to his life as a college student. Jose now sees a world full of color and light.

he good news is that we’re living longer these days; the bad news is the decline in health we may experience as we age. Millions of seniors, our country’s fastest growing popula-

tion, are affected by illness and mobility issues that can cause them to become “shut in” with little or no contact to the outside world. These folks are too often left alone, lacking adequate nutrition, which can exacerbate any health woes and, in fact, shorten their lives.

One of the most effective solutions to this situation is Meals on Wheels, serving some 2.4 million seniors nationwide in over 5,000 communities around the country. The organization estimates that it costs less to provide a senior with its ser-

In 1975, Senior Concerns began as a grassroots organization dedicated to serving frail seniors and their families in the Conejo Valley. According to Andrea Gallagher, president of Senior Concerns, “ The initial challenge to be tackled was feeding the ‘invisible elderly,’ a

term used to describe home-bound seniors in Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park.” Andrea notes there are three primary concerns their home-delivered meal program addresses: proper nutrition, meal funding and isolation. Her organization adopted the national Meals on Wheels program to ensure that the needs of these older individuals were met both nutritionally and socially. As to the cost of the meals, with proof of need, Senior Concerns will cover what their participants cannot. “We provide a varied, three-week menu cycle created by registered dieticians from Los Robles Hospital and Senior Concerns based on Dietary

Guidelines for Americans/USDA Food Patterns for those 50 or older. We can even accommodate special dietary needs, such as diabetic, renal and food allergies,” says Senior Concerns’ Director of Nutrition Services Lisa Weaver. One of the organization’s Board of Directors is Terri Hilliard, a Westlake Village estate planner and elder care attorney, who began volunteering with Senior Concerns because she personally saw the value of the program. “My grandmother used the program and I could be assured that she had someone to check on her and provide healthy meals when I couldn’t be around,” she recalls. “I wanted to make sure that my community would have the same peace of mind.” In the past year alone, Senior Concerns has helped 190 seniors with the aid of 86 volunteers, plus Rotary, Kiwanis, Westlake Juniors and Via Esperanza service groups. In addition to delivering food, they also CONTINUED >

raise awareness about the risks of not eating properly and take time to socialize with their elder charges. Jane M., one of Senior Concerns’ Meals on Wheels subscribers, had hip surgery in April and was unable to shop or cook when she returned home. She applied for the program and used the service through June, when she could start getting around more easily. “It was surgery and directly to home,” says Jane. “I couldn’t have done it without Meals on Wheels. I am so grateful. My family lives nearby, but with work and teenagers, they really couldn’t help on a regular basis. The program’s volunteers were always gracious, loving and respectful of my privacy. It’s nice to know we have options when we need help. They were there for me and, yet, I was able to maintain my independence, which is so important.” Senior Concerns’ volunteer Maureen Dobbins, a retired Registered Nurse, has been delivering meals for over two years. “I wanted to be useful and found the experience has been tremendously rewarding,” she says, recalling working with one lady who was in her 80s and bedridden. “Over a six-month period, I saw marked change in her condition, becoming more active and engaged. I felt I made a difference.”

Nutrition, personal contact and a watchful eye are three key elements in providing our elders with support they need to live longer and healthier. These are the folks who raised us. These are the people to whom we owe a great debt. Senior Concerns’ Meals on Wheels program and Westlake Village Meals on Wheels are at the forefront of a local and national movement to provide better care for those who cared for us. Andrea predicts exponential growth for Senior Concerns’ Meals on Wheels program during the next decade. “We’ll be quadrupling the age 80+ population and more seniors will be living with multiple, chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer’s. More seniors are financially insecure today than earlier generations, as health care costs skyrocket and there is a growing lack of family caregivers to help aging seniors,” she notes. Senior Concerns helps enroll clients in the program during home visits to evaluate nutritional needs and suggest other beneficial services. The organization can also use many more volunteer drivers to meet the needs of the communities they serve. Senior Concerns’ Meals on Wheels program currently delivers meals 365 days a year at a cost of $9.45 per day for a hot lunch and light dinner. Westlake Meals on Wheels provides meals Monday through Saturday, except major holidays, to the home-bound residents of Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Agoura and Oak Park who cannot provide for themselves. The cost is $6 a day for two meals—a hot mid-day meal and cold evening plate. In addition to helping seniors with nutritious lunches and dinners, Meals on Wheels targets the issues of isolation and loss of independence that often impact those who are on their own. hanks in large part to the fundraising efforts of the Westlake Village Junior Women’s Club, money is no longer an obstacle for local women in need of a mammogram. The Junior’s recent $17,500 donation to the Conejo Free Clinic directly supports the Free Mammogram Fund, which allows women in the Conejo Valley to receive a free mammogram if they can’t afford to have one. “To have the Junior’s gift be $2,500 more than we requested was such a thrill. Our mammogram outreach over the coming year will reach even greater heights because of the

Juniors,” says Susan Murphy of the Conejo Free Clinic. “This year I know that the total number of mammograms sponsored by the Westlake Juniors will surpass 1,000 for the first time—an astonishing achievement!” With more than 70 active members and hundreds of alumni, the Westlake Village Junior Women’s Club has been serving the needs of the Conejo Valley for over 45 years, disbursing more than half a million dollars to deserving local charities. Many Mansions Homework Tutoring Program, the Conejo Free Clinic Mammogram Fund, the Cancer Support Center Kids Circle Program, Lutheran Social Services, Temple Adat and the Triunfo YMCA are just a few of the many charities supported by the Juniors. In addition to providing financial support to local charities, the Club also provides volunteer services by hosting events, including the annual Santa Comes to Westlake/ Agoura and Beyond Food Drive (which serves over 200 local needy families), Meals on Wheels and Feed the Hungry. ON A MISSION

Founded in 1968 by women dedicated to improving the lives of others through volunteer service, the Westlake Village Junior Women’s Club comprises daughters, mothers and sisters united by their desire to be deeply involved in their community, ignite motivation and inspire

change. Their mission is to “unite women within the Conejo Valley area in friendship, to promote education, civic and philanthropic work; emphasizing local charities, and to provide opportunities for leadership development and personal growth for the benefit of both our members and our community.” “Being a part of a women's organization like Westlake Junior’s means that not only do we get to support deserving charities in our own backyard, but we get to do so side-byside with other women with the drive to make a positive impact,” says the Junior’s President Elizabeth Quon. “Westlake Junior Women’s Club has given me an opportunity to serve the people of the community that I love. It has allowed me to see, hands on, the changes that we as a group are making in the lives of others. Contribution, of some sort, from community members is what is needed Wig & Stache Party Spring Co-chairs Claire Closson and Jessica Davis to have a thriving, loving and supportive community. That’s the honor and privilege we as Juniors have in doing our part,” notes Cindi Cockrill, past disbursement chair. VISION

Encouraging each member to “discover Santa Comes to Westlake, Agoura, & Beyond, your purpose and Co-chairs Jennifer Goldstein, Elisa Ellis, Gia Shurunfold what being a got and Founder of SCTWAAB, George Annino Junior means,” the Westlake Village Junior Women’s Club focuses on giving back to the community as well as each other. “The women in Westlake Juniors inspire us every day with their commitment and compassion. We hope to continue to inspire this impressive volunteer organization and look forward to working with everyone to achieve another year of great accomplishments,” says the organization on its website. Membership is open to all women from the greater Conejo Valley area. n a chilly Tuesday in March of 1986, the last king of Rwanda stepped into a tea room in Pasadena.

Twenty-five years after fleeing his throne, eight years before

a genocide in his country, King Kigeli V spent a quiet afternoon sipping a blend of Indian and Kenyan teas and dining on finger sandwiches at Rose Tree Cottage. Then, as now, proprietors Edmund and Mary Fry served Yorkshire pudding, apple pie and their family recipe sticky toffee pudding with warm wit and hospitality. Then, as now, Pasadena, a charming cultural center nestled in the San Gabriel Valley, served as a quaint haven for the traveler needing a break from the hustle and bustle. Located about an hour east of the Conejo Valley, Pasadena offers a wealth of options for a fulfilling day trip. Those interested in history, art and the outdoors will want to explore several destinations in the City of Roses. 38

A candy section blooms with Jaffa Cakes, Cadbury Flakes, Crunchies, Curly-Wurlys, shortbread tins, crystallized ginger, Turkish delights and toffee galore. Homemade jams join British condiments such as mint sauce, HP sauce (which tastes like a combination of ketchup and Worcestershire sauce, but sweeter) and piccalilli (labeled “deliciously chunky vegetables in a tangy mustard sauce”). It’s a feast for the eyes that almost measures up to what comes next: an even richer feast for the palate. High tea opens with fresh strawberries from Rose Tree Cottage’s garden, sprinkled with sugar, an elderflower soda favored by Queen Elizabeth II, and, of course, tea. Over the course of the meal, diners are treated to finger sandwiches, scones and clotted cream, roast beef with Yorkshire pudding and a mouthwatering selection of desserts. Advantage Plus Caregivers:

Quality In-Home Care for All Ages ARTICLE PROVIDED

W

hen it comes to aging, most people agree that they prefer to “age in place” and stay in their own homes as long as possible. Unfortunately, as we age, physical and mental changes may require us to need more assistance with activities of daily living, which we often take for granted we can do for ourselves until suddenly we are not able to. Family can often step in and help, but with the sandwich generation, many people are still raising their own families and working, so they can only offer minimal assistance to aging family members. Additionally, sometimes family members do not live close enough to assist on a daily basis. The fact that people are living longer, coupled with the increase of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, present two major factors requiring people to need professional in-home care. Adequate in-home care can help one remain at home and prevent re-admission to the hospital after returning home from an illness or surgery while also providing peace of mind for family members who cannot be there to help. Short- or long-term in-home care can be beneficial for people who need assistance due to injury, surgery or sudden onset of illness. KEYS TO FINDING QUALITY IN-HOME CARE

While finding the best care can be a daunting task, it doesn’t have to be. When looking for an in-home care provider, consider the following: • The agency should be licensed in the state of California and its caregivers should be cleared in the State Registry. • Look for local management staff that is involved in the day-today activities. • Ensure the company has been in business in the area long enough to establish a good reputation, references and referrals. Melanie Farber and Helena Mossembekker, co-owners of AdvantagePlusCaregivers.com, have been providing services to senior citizens and their families in Ventura County for over 23 years. Starting as a geriatric care management service, known as Personal Parent Care, Inc., and then expanding their services to 42

include facility placement referrals (a free service) and in-home caregivers, they became a “one-stop service for all elder care needs.” In 2014, they moved into the next phase of their business, becoming the Ventura County franchise for AdvantagePlusCaregivers.com. Wishing to expand their services to all ages and partner with a cutting-edge company to provide the best services possible to their clients, they joined forces with such a company, which has proved to be a very successful venture. Personal Parent Care, Inc. continues to provide geriatric care management and facility placement referrals, while AdvantagePlusCaregivers.com focuses on in-home caregiver services. Services can be provided in a client’s own home, an assisted-living facility, a long-term care environment and even the hospital. Serving senior citizens and adults of all ages, whether it be someone who is frail or convalescing, disabled, chronically or mentally ill, cognitively impaired, or terminally ill, Melanie and Helena continue to offer specialized and individualized services tailored to each family’s needs in a caring, compassionate, competent, personal and professional manner. As geriatric care managers and certified senior advisors, they are able to offer additional advice, suggestions and resource referrals, free of charge. A complimentary in-home assessment starts the process rolling and they will make it as comfortable and easy as possible to get the care you need for your loved one. Their additional focus these days is on transitional care, working as part of a transitional care team to ensure that after a hospitalization, on return to home, a client has the best follow-up care to prevent rehospitalization. They also specialize in hospice care, serving as part of the team for many hospice and palliative care agencies and dementia care. With the recent advent of Home Care Agency licensing now required in the State of California, they have completed the application process and were recently issued their state license as a Home Care Agency (HCA) as it is now known. Additionally, all their caregivers are employees of the agency and are registered with the state, as is now required, with full FBI and DOJ background screening, TB clearance and specific training as outlined by the state.

Measuring Stock Market Risk: INTRODUCING BETA ARTICLE ROCKY MILLS

Y

ou may recall reading an article about “Dealing with Stock Market Risk” last December. To recap, we concluded: • Diversification is good, but it only deals with individual stock risk. It does nothing to reduce market risk. • You need to employ dynamic, non-emotional triggers to reduce stock market exposure in falling markets. The question you should be asking, “Can I measure how much stock market exposure I am taking?” has an easy answer: “Yes, it’s called ‘beta’.” Beta measures how much your portfolio ought to move up (or down) as compared to how much the stock market moves up (or down). Think of beta as a multiplier: market’s % return X your portfolio’s beta = your portfolio’s % return. By definition, the beta of the stock market is 1.0. Most broadly, diversified stock portfolios have a beta near 1.0 and thus move pretty much in lock-step with the stock market. So, if the market rises 10%, you should expect your 1.0-beta portfolio to rise 10% (10% x 1.0 = 10%). By the same token, if the market falls 10%, you should expect your 1.0-beta portfolio to drop 10%. What if your portfolio had a 0.6 beta? You should expect it to move up or down roughly 60% of what the market moved. So, if the market went up 10%, you should expect your 0.6-beta portfolio to rise 6% (10% x 0.6 = 6%). A 10% market decline should lead to a 6% decline in your portfolio. Use your “dynamic, non-emotional triggers” to manage your portfolio’s beta. You’ll want to lower your beta if the market goes into a downtrend, and you’ll want to raise it back up if the market moves into an uptrend. 44

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | August 2016

CHANGING YOUR BETA

How do you change your portfolio’s beta? The simplest way is to change how much stock you have in your portfolio. Let’s say you currently have 100% of your portfolio in stocks. Assuming it’s well-diversified, this would suggest that your portfolio has a beta of 1.0. But now you’d like to reduce this beta to 0.6. To do so, you would lower your stock holdings to 60% and put the other 40% in bonds or cash (or other asset classes not correlated with the stock market). Similarly, you could create any desired beta by dialing in the appropriate amount of stock holdings. The extreme, of course, would be a portfolio with a beta of 0.0. (You can actually create a portfolio with a negative beta, but that’s beyond the scope of this article.) A 0.0 beta portfolio has no stocks and would be fully defensive, whereas stock market moves would have little, if any, effect on the portfolio. Ask your financial advisor to give you a recap of your portfolio’s beta, as well as his/her plan to manage this beta as market trends change. THE BAY CLUB'S DANIEL GLAVEY

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BEN MALKIN

W

hen I visited with Daniel Glavey, a very experienced and qualified personal trainer at the Bay Club in Thousand Oaks, we planned to discuss how a trainer works with men over the age of 50. Daniel is a trainer certified with the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He works with men who in most cases are out of shape, not just in appearance but in overall conditioning—loss of muscle, abdominal fat, poor flexibility—basically middle-aged men on the verge of aging too early. I told Daniel that when I write an article it usually starts off with my own experience. In this case it went back more than 10 years to the time I decided, entirely on my own, that if I did not do something about my conditioning I would pay the consequences. The guy I just described was me. Daniel meets clients like me all the time. In fact, we are his specialty. One of his biggest challenges in working with men is their attitude. Trying to do too much too quickly. Wanting to build strength and lose weight with no understanding of how to really get started. He begins by asking some very basic questions and plans their program based on their answers with a goal of developing what he calls “patterns” that lead to a change in lifestyle. So essentially it’s not about how much weight you lift or how long you work out. It is as much about what you do when you leave the gym as when you are there with Daniel. Eating healthy, standing instead of just sitting, making slow changes rather than “instant gratification,” and acknowledging pre-existing 46

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | August 2016

injuries and working around them are keys to getting healthy. Goals are set and your health history analyzed, including weight gain and weight loss history. The questions are personal and if clients want to achieve change and do so safely, they need to be ready to share. Not only do his client set goals, Daniel sets goals for them as well, some of which he does not even divulge. The goals involve everything from improved balance and strength to weight loss. His clients learn that fat loss is 80% diet and 20% increasing their metabolism through activities that increase strength and cardio health. I was surprised to learn that weight loss is achieved only about 5% through cardio workouts. So an hour on the treadmill is overrated, and for me, boring as well. I was glad to learn this; less time on the treadmill and more time doing an effective activity. For me, it’s the

rope climber machine. Daniel encourages standing positions during a workout and this machine lets me do it either way. I observed Daniel when he was working with a client. The focus was on lighter patterns, increasing flexibility and repetition. Plenty of “active” stretching with a lot of motion, balance work (stepping over the Big Dog), heel-to-toe strides, really basic things you can also practice at home. Listen to me, all of my age 50+ male friends, boomers and seniors alike: Working with a professional like Daniel Glavey can put off or mitigate the onset of many ageand habit-related ailments, from diabetes, heart problems, falling, high blood pressure and bone density loss (men get this as well as women), to name just a few. So get off your fanny and get to a gym! Get healthy and stay healthy!

Parting Thoughts

Man-O-Pause WORDS KIM PAGANO

Y

ep, man-o-pause, that’s right… we’re always hearing about women and their menopause experiences, but did you know that men go through their own type of menopause? Often when men feel like they are going through a midlife crisis, doctors and researchers explain that they are actually experiencing a form of male menopause called “andropause.” Shocking as it may be, andropause is becoming widely recognized by physicians to explain the changes many middle-aged men experience—from energy loss and depression to loss of libido and sexual dysfunction. Some clinicians suggest that men experience these symptoms because they are not able to connect to their loved ones and may be looking for love in all the wrong places. Just as women feel unloved or unheard, men often have similar feelings, we just don’t hear as much about it. Why? Most men were taught to suck up their feelings and be macho at a very young age. You've heard the saying “Men don't cry.” Why not? Aren't they human? Ignoring or stifling feelings all the time can be a hard role to play, considering the ups and downs of running a business and providing for your family. Who do our men have to fall back on? Expecting men to be loving and romantic, while at the same time not showing their feelings or emotions doesn't exactly make sense when you really think about it. What if we, as women, gave them the same opportunities to freely express their feelings like we do? Just as women often take on executive roles and desire to become stronger in their businesses while 54

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | August 2016

still having the luxury of expressing their womanhood without judgment outside of the office, wouldn’t it make sense to give our men the same permission and freedom to acknowledge and express their feelings? As moms, we may encourage our sons to be expressive, but as they grow up, it all changes. It’s time to change the societal norms so men are no longer expected to stuff their feelings. This will probably feel foreign to everyone at first, so let’s be open and supportive when the men in our lives are willing to express their feelings and even cry. The outcome will be rewarding. You will finally get to know the real man you have been sharing your life with. Instead of watching him fake a smile to avoid rocking the boat, he will feel comfortable enough to talk about his personal feelings. Isn't that what most of us women are looking for? A true soulmate. When your husband feels free to express his innermost feelings with you, he won’t feel the need to go looking for someone else to understand him and he will be more content and connected with his own life, which helps maintain a happy marriage. Kim Pagano is brought to you by the award-winning talk radio station AM 1590 KVTA. She brings you the Brighter Side of the 805, Saturdays from 6 to 8 a.m., reminding us how important it is to "Look Good, Feel Good, Do Good." Feel free to listen to the Kim Pagano Show at your leisure by subscribing to her podcast: ITunes/The Kim Pagano Show.
