Making strides.
OCTOBER 2015
O
n Saturday, September 26, I was honored to walk in this year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.
My reason for walking in the Making Strides event is personal – just like every other walker’s story. We all walk because we’ve been affected by breast cancer in some way, and because the Making Strides event gives us the power to make a difference and fight back. This was our opportunity to honor breast cancer survivors, remember people we have lost and help raise funds for groundbreaking research as well as information and services for people fighting breast cancer. I really appreciate the donations we received, as well as those received by my fellow Making Strides walkers, in support of our efforts for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. The contributions will help the American Cancer Society save more lives from breast cancer by investing in groundbreaking breast cancer research, providing free comprehensive information and support for those touched by the disease, and helping people take steps to reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it is most treatable.

In this issue, we are also featuring a very special fundraising event that was held for the American Cancer Society on August 1. It was very successful, not only in raising donations, but in bringing our entire Conejo Valley community together in this effort. Led by community leaders Rosemary Allison, Kris Carraway-Bowman and Sandy Berg, it was a great example of our community Giving Back.

How Much Stock Should Be in Your Portfolio? ANSWER THESE 4 SIMPLE QUESTIONS ARTICLE ROCKY MILLS
E
veryone talks about “asset allocation” – spreading around your assets into different buckets in order to reduce risk. At the highest level, it comes down to how much you put in stocks and how much you put in nonstocks (bonds, real estate and cash). So how much stock should be in your portfolio? In other words, given that stocks generally carry the most risk in a portfolio, how much risk should you be taking? Certainly not a “one size fits all” answer, since everyone’s financial situation differs, the right amount of stocks for each individual will vary too. In general: • Younger investors can afford more stock risk. • Clients with higher income can afford more stock risk. • Clients with a greater net worth can afford more stock risk. • Clients who understand and desire more risk can incorporate this into their mix. How do you translate these concepts into a specific allocation to stocks (such as 60% or 75%)? For years, financial advisors have used “Mean Variance Optimizers (MVO)” to generate the answer. An MVO is highly sophisticated software that considers how each asset class has performed and how much it has moved relative to all the other asset classes. The MVO also uses assumptions for inputs like interest rates, inflation and mortality. In short, the financial advisor loads the MVO with client-specific data (age, income, net worth, risk tolerance) and the MVO spits out an allocation. After using and studying MVOs for years, I’ve concluded: • An MVO’s outcome (say, to ideally have 55% in stocks) is still only an approximation. • In fact, you can vary this number up or down
about 7% and not significantly alter your long-term outcome. So this 55% singlenumber outcome becomes a range of 48% to 62%. • It takes lots of client and financial advisor time to complete the MVO process. • Clients generally have no idea how their inputs affect the MVO’s outcome. Is there a back-of-the-envelope way to approximate an MVO’s output? Borrowing from online asset allocation sites (like the one used by the SEC*), I use four simple questions (see sidebar). Based on my personal example, the percentage of stocks for my accounts should be somewhere near 60%. Given the +/7% range, my stocks ought to be anywhere from 53% to 67%. Of course, this is only an approximation – use of an MVO and other tools will get you even closer. And that’s an average stock percentage. Look for information about varying your stock percentage as long-term market trends change in a future column. Add these 4 components to find your ideal stock percentage: 1. What is your age? Subtract it from 100. 2. Does your income exceed your expenses? If so, add 10. 3. Does your net worth exceed $3 million? If so, add 10. 4. What is your risk “personality”? This reflects your feelings about taking risk. • If you’re a “bury it in the mattress” type, subtract 10. • If you’re a “bet it all on #7 red,” add 10.

So let’s try an example – me: 1. I’m 63. So I start with 37 (i.e., 37% in stocks). 2. My income exceeds my expenses, so I add 10. I’m now at 47. 3. M y net worth exceeds $3 million, so I add another 10. That brings me to 57. 4. I understand risk very well. I’m not a gambler, but I’m willing to take a measured dose of risk. I’d score me at +3. With music by Richard Adler and lyrics by Jerry Ross, Damn Yankees is based on the book by George Abbott and Douglas Wallop about a middle-aged baseball fanatic who trades his soul to the devil for a chance to lead his favorite team to victory in the pennant race against the New York Yankees. The family-friendly event included a charity baseball game between Conejo Valley Little League heavy hitters and Cabrillo staff, Board members, and City Council members, savory eats from local food trucks, merchandise and samplings from community vendors, celebrity guests and entertainment by the Kabrillo Kids. “Memories were made that will be cherished for years to come, while we raised crucial funds to support community programs,” says Feldman. Damn Yankees performances are held Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. A post-show discussion with cast and staff follows the first Saturday matinee of each production, and a signed performance for the deaf and hard-of-hearing will take place on the second Friday night of each production.

eading the cause Community Leaders Unite to Help Others and Save Lives
I
“A leader is a dealer in hope.” - Napoléon Bonaparte
f the strength of a community is measured by its leaders, the Conejo Valley and its surrounding regions represent a mighty force. With a cadre of charitable events occurring on just about every night of the week, opportunities to support worthwhile causes abound. And, as anyone who has ever been involved behind the scenes of a philanthropic event knows, these benefits do not happen on their own. Putting on a successful program requires a committed group of benevolent individuals to plan, manage and raise funds for a good cause.
22 Conejo Valley Lifestyle | October 2015
Conejo Valley is fortunate to be the home of several generous community leaders, who go above and beyond the call to serve their fellow citizens and support worthy causes. ROSEMARY ALLISON
Realtor Rosemary Allison, Vice President of Patient Experience for Los Robles Hospital Kris Carraway-Bowman and Oncology Nurse Cathy Cole are three local residents who exemplify the spirit of community leadership. The three women

are all dedicated to doing their part (and more) in the quest to find a cure for cancer. As co-chairs of the recent 102nd Birthday Celebration of the American Cancer Society Vineyard Magic Gala 2015 event, Rosemary and Kris donated countless hours rallying the comRosemary and Joe Markiewicz
munity to help “make cancer disappear” by raising funds to support ongoing research for a cure. “For nearly 100 years, the American Cancer Society has been fighting to eliminate cancer, save lives and diminish suffering through research, education, advocacy and service. Despite many successes and even with the many, many lives saved, there is still so much to do. It is because of generous support through events like this gala that national research and local programs continue to be funded,” says Rosemary, who also chaired the ACS’s Joie de Vivre event in 2010 and co-chaired its Bugatti Ball in 2011 with Jacqui Irwin (now an assemblywoman). Rosemary’s commitment to supporting the work of the American Cancer Society is deepened by the fact that she, like so many, has loved ones who have been impacted by cancer. “Many close friends and members of my family have been diagnosed,” says Rosemary. “Thanks to the research of the American Cancer Society, many of them will be celebrating birthdays this year.” The Vineyard Magic event, held at the Vineyard Pavilion at the Westlake Village Inn, featured live and silent auctions, musical entertainment, magicians and oncology nurse honorees, who were recognized for their daily contributions they make working in the front lines in the fight against cancer. Hosted by Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean, the evening kicked off with a sponsor reception with wine donated by Honorary Chairs Rick Quinn and Dave Nichols of Opolo Vineyards. Live musical performances by the Brandon Ragan Project, Marcella Detroit and Round Trip entertained guests throughout the evening, while magicians Matthew and Stephen Levine, Charlie Mount and Jesse Dee from the famous Magic Castle donated their time to wow guests with their amazing magical talents. “It was a magical evening,” says Rosemary, noting that the event participants raised $160,000 for the American Cancer Society. The auction items featured incredible trips to Maui, the Opolo Inn in Paso Robles, Ramekins Culinary School and Inn in Sonoma and other popular vacation destinations, an adventure-filled day with Sheriff Dean and the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team and waterwise, eco-friendly yard art. “It was a great success,” Rosemary says, "The event is a true testament to the philanthropic support of the community and individuals who are committed to making a difference in the fight against cancer. I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to co-chair such a wonderful and inspiring celebration that will have a direct impact on the lives of cancer patients and caregivers. We are constantly investing in the world we share, going to great lengths to make things better. It is not a business obligation, it is a family one. Families inspire us.” With such a strong commitment to community, it’s no surprise Rosemary’s family is also involved in service through leadership. Her son, Joe Markiewicz, serves on the Sheriff's Foundation as an ambassador, and her daughter, Cristina Markiewicz, chaired the first American Relay for Life event while attending California Lutheran University. Recognized as Volunteer of the Year for Ventura County, Rosemary was named by Forbes magazine in 2014 as one of the top luxury real estate professionals in the country and was placed in the Top 250 CONTINUED >

of 1,000 top realtors based on the number of closed transactions by the Wall Street Journal and Real Trends, Inc., and in 2013, she received the esteemed Conejo Valley Board of REALTORS® Community Service of the Year award. Well-known for her hard work and generosity, Rosemary believes it is important for community leaders to help those in need and support charitable endeavors. “Community leaders need to spotlight the causes that are important to our community and they have the name recognition to attract potential sponsors,” she says. Rosemary is also involved with supporting the Ventura County Sheriff’s Foundation, St. Jude’s and the No Place Like Hope Picnic. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, Rosemary started selling real estate in the Conejo Valley in 1975. She says the people are her favorite asset of the area. “This area is a wonderful melting pot of individuals and families who care about their community,” says Rosemary.
As a recent co-chair of the American Cancer Society’s Vineyard Magic Gala event, Kris continues to lead the community in service for a good cause, in this case, the fight to cure cancer. “Research is the key to finding new treatment modalities and eventually the cure for all cancers,” Kris states. “Eventually, someone in some country will discover a breakthrough, but we have to keep fundraising to insure the research continues. We must never get blasé.” Her husband, Joe, has also been active in community concerns, serving as the executive director of the Los Angeles and Ventura County chapters of HomeAid, a nonprofit with the mission to end homelessness. “There are so many worthwhile causes in our community. No matter which one or two or three you choose, just get involved,” encourages Kris. “You’re needed!” Making Strides for Breast Cancer participants
KRIS CARRAWAY-BOWMAN
Kris Carraway-Bowman and her family are an excellent example of people passionate about the well-being of their community. A New York City native, Kris moved to Westlake in 1976 to work for the Prudential Insurance Company’s Real Estate Development Office. At the time, they were just beginning to develop North Ranch. “It was an exciting time in the Conejo Valley. There was a feeling of unlimited possibilities,” Kris recalls. Now empty-nesters, Kris and her husband Joe still live in Westlake Village with their border collie, Jake, and chocolate lab, Cara. “We live in such a vibrant community. There are so many opportunities to reach out to help others,” comments Kris. “I always say that a newcomer can never complain that it’s hard to meet people and that there’s nothing to do. Whatever your community passion, there’s a nonprofit just waiting for you to help out.” Currently the Vice President of Patient Experience for Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, Kris is very involved in a leadership capacity with numerous nonprofit organizations and civic groups. She served on the executive boards of the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, Conejo Future Foundation, Vision 20/20 and as Chairman of the Board of the Westlake Village Chamber of Commerce and cofounded the Westlake Village Meals on Wheels program. Recognized for her efforts, Kris was named "Woman of the Year, 2001" by the Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village Regional Chamber of Commerce. What’s more, she was also active in city government, serving two terms on the Westlake Village City Council, starting in 1993 and continuing with her re-election in 1997, and serving as the Westlake Mayor in 1998, before retiring from the council in 2001. 24 Conejo Valley Lifestyle | October 2015
Making Strides for Breast Cancer participants
CATHY COLE
Always ready to jump in and lend a hand, Cathy Cole, NP-BC, MPH, CHES, CBPN-IC, is another community leader active in the battle to cure cancer. A part of the Oncology Nurse Navigator Breast Program at Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center, Cathy is a breast cancer survivor herself. She recently walked with thousands of dedicated volunteers in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk to raise funds to end breast cancer. Community supporters turned out in full force on a September Saturday morning to walk with hundreds and thousands of others in communities throughout the United States in the 5K Walk to celebrate survivors, pay tribute to loved ones lost and fight back against breast cancer, the number two cause of cancer death in women. As part of her mission to help in the efforts to eradicate cancer, Cathy chaired the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Thousand Oaks — Be Part of the Cure Kickoff Reception held at the Westlake Village Inn about a month before the walk to honor breast cancer survivors and prepare for the walk. “The kickoff event is always a treat. We get to share stories with survivors and their families, and give messages of hope, while fundraising for the cause,” says Cathy, who has been involved with the Making Strides event for four years and an American Cancer Society Volunteer since 1980. The evening program included a welcome from Community Events Manager Monica Murrietta and an address to the audience by Cathy and Monica, “How the American Cancer Society is Helping to Finish the Fight Against Breast Cancer.” Breast cancer survivor Jackie Slutzke also shared her moving experience of winning the breast cancer war and was honored with a standing ovation by the attendees. Fundraising strategies and resources, as well as a video, “How You Can Fight Back through Advocacy,” rounded out the event, which inspired Conejo Valley Lifestyle’s Publisher Robin Chesler to join Cathy as one of the team leaders heading up a team of walkers in the event. “We try to raise thousands of dollars, set a goal and try to exceed it,” says Cathy, adding that more than $100,000 was raised for the cause through pledges, team building and sponsorships. She is grateful for the “many wonderful and loyal sponsors,” including Los Robles Hospital, Thousand Oaks Radiology, UCLA Health, The Westlake Village Inn, O’Gara Coach, Rolling Oaks Radiology and Montecito Bank and Trust. Cathy’s tireless work leading a team of volunteers in organizing, planning and coordinating with event sponsors played a huge part in ensuring the event’s stellar success, which Cathy says was a group effort. “I feel that my greatest assets are the people I work with and cannot take full credit for anything I do without recognizing the team of people I work with every day at the hospital and in my volunteer capacity,” she says. Many local businesses also added their support to the effort, including Kickoff Host the Westlake Village Inn, Pancake Breakfast sponsor Kiwanis of Thousand Oaks, and the Avenue of Hope & Water Station sponsor O’Gara Coach Bentley Maserati of Westlake Village. The event’s f lagship sponsors were Los Robles Hospital &
Medical Center, Thousand Oaks Radiology, UCLA Health, Teledyne Technologies and Rolling Oaks Radiology. Hundreds of people walking down the main street in Thousand Oaks during the Making Strides Walk “draws attention” and creates an awareness about breast cancer, says Cathy. "It's important for community leaders to set an example for others that when your heart is truly committed to a project or cause that can change the community for the better, you are obligated to try and make a difference.” Originally from Long Island, New York, Cathy has been making a difference in Thousand Oaks for more than 36 years, along with her husband, Larry, who was named the 2015 Volunteer of the Year with the nonprofit no-kill Shelter Hope Pet Shop, and is also a 2015 nominee for Senior of the Year in the Conejo Valley. Cathy is also involved with other charitable organizations and causes, including her faith-based community, the National Wildlife Federation, political organizations, the Conejo Free Clinic Advisory Board and animal rescue organizations. Having lost several family and friends to cancer, Cathy is passionate about her role as a patient and survivor advocate. “I knew at an early age that I wanted to be in medicine in some capacity and work with cancer patients and their families,” says Cathy, who enjoys assisting and supporting patients as they navigate their cancer-related appointments, questions and concerns. The strength, dedication and commitment to helping others displayed by these community leaders helps to ensure a better quality of life for so many people in need. The fruits of their labor include the example they set about the importance of getting involved and making a difference. Conejo Valley Lifestyle salutes and thanks our community leaders for their efforts in helping make the Conejo Valley a place we’re proud to call home. he often-used saying “it takes a village to raise a child” may as well be used for community events, because “it also takes a village to put an event together.” A village of leaders and volunteers, that is. Fortunately, the idyllic and thriving Conejo Valley has no shortage of these individuals. Generous and committed, they’re at the forefront of some crowd-drawing charity events this fall. SENIOR CONCERNS' ULTIMATE DINING
Patrick and Cathy Warburton
For 30 years now, The Ultimate Dining Experience has raised everyone’s wining and dining expectations, with close to 15 participating local wineries and restaurants. Mastro’s Steakhouse, Aroha
New Zealand Cuisine, Sunland Vintage Winery, Opolo Vineyards and Ventura Limoncello Company were just some of the vendors at the recently-held event back in September. This year’s theme was “Motown” and the garden and ballroom of the Hyatt Westlake were transformed complete with costumes, records, fedoras and music notes reminiscent of this golden era in music. The Blue Breeze Band, a Motown tribute band and special guest Gary Bryan, legendary disc jockey of KRTH-FM, took guests down memory lane with the soulful music of the Temptations, the Commodores, Marvin Gaye and Earth, Wind & Fire, among other 60s music greats. Presented by Thousand Oaks-based non-profit group Senior Concerns, the annual fundraiser was sold-out, drawing about 420 guests. Proceeds from the event directly go towards Senior Concerns’ various programs, including its adult day care program and Meals On Wheels, a year-round, volunteer-led hot meal delivery program for homebound seniors in the Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks areas. Andrea Gallagher, president of Senior Concerns, discussed Ultimate Dining’s staying power in the community. “I think the community overwhelmingly supports it year after year because it benefits a universal cause -- aging. It’s an issue that affects every single person in the population, whether it’s themselves, a family member or a friend,” she said. According to Gallagher, the audience was moved by a caregiver’s speech at the event. There was no dry eye when the caregiver spoke about caring for an ex-spouse and taking the burden off of their children. “It’s the ultimate sacrifice and it’s becoming commonplace these days with the boom we’re experiencing in the 65 and older age group,” said Gallagher.

THOUSAND OAKS POLICE CHARITABLE FOUNDATION ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
For Barbara Murray, the idea of “helping those who help the community” was what drew her to the Thousand Oaks Police Charitable Foundation (TOPCF). After being invited by a friend four years ago, Murray stayed on and eventually started chairing its annual golf tournament as a volunteer. “The foundation is not a ‘long shot’ for me since I’m in the security business and my business partner is a retired police officer,” says Murray, co-owner and chief financial officer of Cornwall Security, based in Thousand Oaks. Now in its 19th year, the annual golf tournament presented by Pleasant Holidays will take place on Monday, October 19, at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village. “We are always at capacity with 200+ golfers and about 300 dinner guests,” says Murray, a 16-year Conejo Valley resident. Approximately 100 volunteers help make this event happen, according to Murray. Event proceeds help various programs of the foundation, including the Volunteers in Policing, the Police Explorers, Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART), the Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES), the Citizen Academy and the Reserve Deputies program.
Also a long-time school volunteer with her kids graduating from Westlake High School, Murray said that volunteering at this level is as rewarding for many reasons. “The crime rate in our community is so low that the police are able to be involved in many outreach programs in the community. Programs like the VIPs help the police department reduce cost and contribute a huge number of volunteer hours,” she says. “Those reasons are more than enough to keep me involved.” BOYS & GIRLS CLUB STAND UP FOR KIDS GALA DINNER AND AUCTION
Becky Fleishman knows firsthand how it is growing up in a safe and tight-knit community. A product of a local Boys & Girls Club, she remembers the many great experiences she had there after-school and during school breaks. Throughout her high school years, she volunteered first at her local club before joining the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Conejo CONTINUED >

Valley as a full-time staff member, and then eventually being promoted to director of development. “You could say I grew up here and I know the ins and outs of the clubs,” says Fleishman. “Without sounding like a cliche, it’s been proven that great leaders really start here at our clubs.” Now numbering seven clubs, the Boys & Girls Clubs put on a number of fundraising events every year to meet the growing demands of the roughly 3,800 kids who pass through its club doors. Coming up soon is the Stand Up for Kids Gala Dinner and Auction on Saturday, October 24 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village. In its 13th year, the gala honors community members who have contributed both their time and resources to the clubs. This year, the honorees are board members Lon Morton and his wife, who have served on various committees over the years. Longtime board member and committee volunteer Gary Stephani will be recognized as well when he receives the Cal Johnston Service Award. According to Fleishman, about 600 guests are expected to grace this major fundraiser. Behind the scenes, about 60 volunteers work tirelessly and keep long hours to make things happen — from placing phone calls to placing decor at the event venue. Said Fleishman, “We do it for the kids. We do it to support the leaders of tomorrow.” Los Cerritos Middle School Encore! performs at a past Gala for the guests.

Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center is STEMI-READY
ARTICLE ALEX VEJAR
L
os Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks is a STEMI (ST Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction) receiving center, accredited as such by both Los Angeles and Ventura counties, according to Susan Johnson, director of cardiovascular services at the hospital. STEMI heart attacks are the deadliest types and are caused by a prolonged blockage of blood supply in the heart. Every year, nearly 250,000 people experience STEMI heart attacks. These types of heart attacks carry a substantial risk of death and disability because 100 percent of the artery is blocked. They require a quick response from all members of the medical team, from first responders in the community to cardiologists in the hospital. “When a hospital has a STEMI process in place, that means that they care for the sickest of the sick of the heart attack patients,” says Johnson. That extra layer of expertise translates to better outcomes. The biggest risk for cardiac arrest and muscle damage is within the first few hours after a vessel closes up. Research suggests that if the vessel is opened within the first few hours of the blockage, the patient will have a better chance of survival and less muscle damage. Because heart muscle doesn’t regenerate, once it’s damaged, there is no way of bringing it back. The best way to limit damage is to get 32 Conejo Valley Lifestyle | October 2015
the circulation going as soon as possible. Hospitals that are equipped to treat patients with STEMI heart attacks have cardiac catheterization labs so arteries can be opened right away with a coronary angioplasty. During the nonsurgical procedure, a cardiologist uses a catheter to insert a deflated balloon into the blocked artery. The balloon is then inflated, which allows blood to flow through the artery again. The warning signs of a heart attack are similar for both men and women, with some slight but important differences. Some of those include: • Chest discomfort. • Shortness of breath. • Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. For women, those previous symptoms are present, but they are more likely to show some other signs, such as shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain. It is possible for women to experience a heart attack without any chest discomfort at all, according to the American Heart Association. If you are experiencing symptoms, call 911, instead of driving. That way, paramedics can begin life-saving treatment right away. To learn more about Cardiac Care at Los Robles, please call 877.888.5746 or visit LosRoblesHospital.com.

Tribute to a Great Grandmother WORDS BEN MALKIN | PICTURE TIA MALKIN-FONTECCHIO

Sophie donates her hair to make wigs given to women fighting cancer. 42 Conejo Valley Lifestyle | October 2015
s you have read in this issue about local leaders in the Conejo and Santa Rosa Valley communities leading the fight against cancer, you may reflect how cancer has personally affected you or those you love. It was not until I made my weekly visit to Facebook — weekly because I am not a Facebook aficionado — that I remembered how cancer impacts people across the generations. As these days, Facebook is the only way I can get a regular “photo fix” of my two granddaughters, who live 3,000 miles away in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, I check in weekly to get a regular window into their lives, chronicled by their mother, my daughter Tia Malkin-Fontecchio. Oh well, I surrender to social media. It’s a good thing I did, as last week, Tia posted photos of my granddaughter Sophie donating about 9 inches of her incredible long, wavy “Malkin Mane” (it runs in the family) to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program. Pantene, a division of Proctor & Gamble, started the program as a way of giving back, in this case healthy hair to be made into wigs that are donated free of charge to women fighting cancer. In their words: “We created Beautiful Lengths because healthy hair means a lot to us, and the appearance of healthy hair means so much to women battling cancer. We want to be there for women when looking and feeling healthy is so important to them. As one breast cancer survivor put it, ‘It was very hard when my hair started falling out. It really takes away who you are when you look in the mirror.’ Many of the women we help say that putting on a wig makes them feel like themselves again. And when you donate your hair to the cause, you’re helping make that happen.” Nine-year-old Sophie and her 11-year-old sister Zoe live in an affluent, beautiful community in the Brandywine Valley in Pennsylvania. In their young lives, they have not yet been touched by the tragedy of cancer or other cataclysmic illnesses. When she volunteered to donate her hair (Tia is engaging her and Zoe in other public service activities as well), Sophie was not really aware that many years ago, her great grandmother, Laura Malkin, was stolen from us by breast cancer when she was only 47 years old. She did not live to see her three grandchildren or her increasing cadre of great grandchildren. She was a passionate and loving woman who at that point in her life wanted nothing more than to be a grandmother. It never happened. When Sophie made this small but important donation, she honored Laura Malkin and all those past and present who are fighting back. Bless you, Sophie.
