The people highlighted in this month's issue have invested in themselves and their communities. They offer their time, money, and effort to provide services and places that benefit others. And they understand that people are the most essential ingredient when it comes to creating one.
Each takes a varied approach, but each person or business involved in this issue offers places for people in our communities to gather. Take Walter and his wife, who have invested in a storied local business, Southern Star Brewery, expanding its capacity to make beer and host large events and concerts. Not to mention what their investment has done to increase the business's ability to employ more people.
Then there are the long-planned efforts of Howard Hughes Inc. and the people at First Methodist Conroe building the first church in The Woodland Hills. Better Bookkeepers offers services for your business that will give you the time to go out and engage in our corner of the world while working tirelessly to support it. The National Youth Theater gives our youth somewhere to celebrate life's joys while Robert and Kim Marling of the Woodforest Foundation are helping to build Children's Safe Harbor for those who need to heal.
As I celebrate Easter this month, I hope to step back, remember how important community is, and discover how I can contribute my small part to improving our community.
God Bless, ALISON

As the Texas sun begins to shine a little brighter, Southern Star Brewing Company in Conroe is ready to welcome guests and is fully invested in having an exciting spring and summer season. After a chilly winter and months of extensive renovations, the beloved brewery is poised for a massive year, bringing fresh energy, enhanced facilities, and, of course, incredible craft beer to the community.
Founded in 2007, Southern Star Brewing Company has long been a pioneer in the Texas craft beer scene. Now owned by Walter and Susan Galdenzi, the brewery holds the distinction of being the first in Texas to can craft beer, forever changing the landscape of independent brewing in the state. The brewery's commitment to quality and innovation is evident in its diverse lineup of beers, crafted under the expertise of brewmaster Henryk Orlik. With a background in German brewing traditions and a resume that includes developing the legendary Purple Haze and Turbo Dog for Abita Brewing, Orlik brings a wealth of experience to the Southern Star brand.
After an eight-month renovation, Southern Star is unveiling a fresh, revitalized taproom and expanded outdoor spaces, ensuring an even better experience for visitors. The brewery sits on a sprawling 14-acre property, offering a spacious biergarten with patio seating for several hundred guests, three bars, and a stage for live music. With new taproom management in place and plans for a full kitchen in the works, visitors can expect an upgraded experience featuring great beer, delicious food, and an unbeatable atmosphere.
2025 is shaping up to be a major year for Southern Star. Currently producing 8,000 barrels of beer annually, the brewery has its sights set on nearly doubling production to 15,000 barrels by the end of the year. With increased capacity and distribution through major retailers like H-E-B, Spec’s, Total Wine, and Kroger, Southern Star’s reach is only growing.
Southern Star’s flagship beers have been staples in the craft beer world for years, including the Bombshell Blonde, a crisp American blonde ale, the hoppy Pine Belt Pale Ale, and the amazing Buried Hatchet Stout. However, to me, if there’s one beer that truly embodies the spirit of patio weather, it’s Southern Brunch.
This citrusy shandy is a game-changer—bursting with bright, refreshing citrus flavors that will make you forget about mimosas forever. It’s the perfect brunch companion, a beer made for those who claim they don’t like beer but will fall in love with this one. Imagine a Blue Moon, but exactly how you always wished that it tasted. Whether you’re sipping on the patio with friends or stocking up for a poolside afternoon, Southern Brunch is the ultimate warm-weather brew.
Beyond the flagship favorites, the taproom offers exclusive small-batch brews that can’t be found in any of the countless retail locations. Fans can also enjoy seasonal releases and experimental brews that showcase the brewery’s dedication to creativity and craftsmanship.
Southern Star Brewing Company isn’t just about the beer—it’s about the experience. Their commitment to community engagement shines through in their jam-packed events calendar. As the warm weather rolls in, the brewery is set to host a variety of exciting gatherings, including crawfish boils in
April, a Sour Beer Festival, and a May 4th Star Wars-themed event that promises to be out of this galaxy.
On top of these can’t-miss events, Southern Star regularly features live music, food trucks, and other festivities that bring people together. While a new and revamped kitchen is coming, The Webster Melting Company food truck is a staple at the brewery, offering tasty bites to pair with your favorite pint.
If you haven’t yet experienced Southern Star Brewing Company, now is the perfect time. With its newly renovated taproom, spacious outdoor seating, and an unbeatable lineup of craft beers, this Conroe gem is set to make 2025 its biggest year yet.
Stop by Southern Star Brewing Company at 3525 N. Frazier St. The taproom is open Wednesday through Sunday, offering a welcoming, laid-back environment where beer lovers can unwind and enjoy everything this legendary brewery has to offer. With live music, great food, and refreshing brews flowing, Southern Star is the place to be. So grab a pint, soak up the Texas sun, and create one to remember at Southern Star Brewing Company!

Honoring the Vision: The Woodlands Hills gets its First Church
There are many ways to invest in your hometown, but it helps to start with a good plan. Building on the success of the vibrant community of The Woodlands, developer Howard Hughes Holdings Inc. has embarked on another extraordinary development. Inspired by the vision of The Woodlands' founder, George Mitchell, The Woodlands Hills embraces the essence of a genuine hometown where residents and businesses thrive in a seamless blend.
The Woodlands Hills, located next to Lake Conroe in Willis, is distinguished by its commitment to nature. It dedicates 25% of its land to permanent green space. Now in its sixth year, the development is celebrated for its nature-inspired amenities, encouraging residents to connect with the outdoors. The official ribbon-cutting on July 19, 2018, marked the highly anticipated launch of this hidden gem, just 13 miles north of The Woodlands.
The Woodlands Hills is thoughtfully designed to integrate nature into the fabric of the community. However, a true community is defined by more than just its scenic surroundings — it flourishes through its residents' compassion, support, and service to others. It is about instilling gratitude in our youth, inspiring them to give back, and cultivating a spirit of kindness and hospitality. Here, we highlight a key investment in The Woodlands Hills that may encourage residents to embrace generosity and a heart for service.
Recognizing the importance of faith in fostering community, planners of The Woodlands Hills designated a site for a house of worship at the heart of the development. This eight-acre property was purchased by century-old First Methodist Conroe (FMC) to establish The Woodlands
“An essential element of The Woodlands Hills is preserving the wooded character of the landscape while developing the community in harmony with nature,” said Steve Sams, Senior Vice President, Master Planned Communities and Land Sales for Howard Hughes.
Hills Community Church (TWHCC). Once the community fully develops, the church will be centrally located, allowing it to serve as both a spiritual and communal hub. Reverend Susan Kent considers it a blessing and an honor for the church to be positioned in such a vital role, meeting not only the spiritual needs of residents but also providing a place of connection and support.
As a second campus of First Methodist Conroe, The Woodlands Hills Community Church will be developed in three phases, with groundbreaking expected in mid-2025. Each phase will function as a fully operational church, adapting to the growing needs of the community. Phase one will feature a 20,000-square-foot facility, including a multipurpose worship space, children's classrooms for a parents' day out program, a café, and an indoor playground — which is sure to become a favorite gathering spot! Additional multipurpose rooms will serve for meetings, classes, and administrative functions, fostering a welcoming community center atmosphere.
Currently meeting at W. Lloyd Meador Elementary School in Willis, the church has established a spiritual growth pathway known as L.I.F.E., an acronym representing four key membership vows that reflect the life and mission of Jesus:
1. Living in Community – Encouraging meaningful relationships across generations 2. Investing in Others – Teaching, mentoring, and uplifting fellow members 3. Focusing Outward – Serving beyond the church to make a positive impact 4. Encountering God – Strengthening faith through worship and spiritual practice.
L.I.F.E. groups are designed to foster intergenerational connections, something Reverend Kent believes is often missing in modern society. Through these groups, members learn from one another, invest in each other's growth, and build strong, supportive relationships.
The Woodlands Hills Community Church is more than a place of worship — it is an anchor for community development, dedicated to serving its neighbors. Through meaningful

· Service Ministry: Sometimes, the smallest gestures make the biggest impact. Whether providing essential medical equipment or a warm, home-cooked meal, TWHCC congregation members selflessly dedicate their time to offering simple comforts that help lighten life's burdens and express compassion.

National Youth Theater (NYT) is a performing arts organization serving the youth of the North Houston area. It recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary. When the program began in 2014, it only had one camp for a handful of students. Since then, it has evolved into a Christian nonprofit organization with 10 camps, 9 productions, and NYT Studio classes that serve hundreds of young artists each year.
NYT is far more than just the incredible performances you witness on stage; it is a vibrant community dedicated to fostering character development and cultivating leaders. Within this space, participants engage in valuable experiences that promote personal growth and integrity. At the heart of NYT is a commitment to placing Jesus at the center of everything they do, guiding their values and actions. This unique blend of artistry, faith, and community engagement helps individuals not only to showcase their talents but also to grow spiritually and emotionally, creating lasting bonds with one another.
"NYT plays a vital role in both the community and the lives of young people by creating a supportive environment that encourages personal and social growth," says Justin Parks, Executive and Artistic Director of NYT. "Through participation in the performing arts, these programs offer young individuals meaningful opportunities to explore their creativity, build confidence, cultivate leadership skills, explore their spiritual growth, and develop essential life skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, which are important for both ministry and everyday life."
Jessica Kotrla, Education Director of the theater, agrees that NYT provides a friendly space that welcomes youth from all backgrounds, giving them the chance to experience musical theater, dance, and ministry. "In 2024, we had a total of 731 cast members involved in our shows, 621 campers attending our summer camps, and 214 students participating in our studio classes," said Kotrla. "We embrace a diverse group of young people, including those from homeschool programs, public and private schools, as well as children with autism and learning disabilities. We understand the challenges they face and strive to provide a supportive environment where every child can thrive."
The youth theater organization also partners with local schools, community organizations, and families to strengthen community ties. "Every now and then, we happily donate set pieces and props to school theater departments and provide costumes for church productions. Throughout the year, we organize fun spirit nights at local businesses, bringing everyone together to enjoy good times and support our local spots. We also donate summer camp registrations for schools and non-profit organizations to auction off. The amazing families who collaborate with us on productions, along with all the wonderful attendees who come out to support these events, are such a blessing. We’re truly grateful to be part of this vibrant community," said Chris Hendrix, Director of Production.
NYT understands that not every family can afford tuition, which is why it offers a scholarship program to ensure that all children have the opportunity to participate in its programs. "Last year, we were able to provide over $13,000 in financial assistance to families facing difficult circumstances. Every child, regardless of their background, deserves the chance to experience the magic of an NYT program," said Emily Currid, the Business Director.
Investing in youth theater translates into brighter futures for young people. It equips them with the confidence to pursue their passions and the skills necessary to overcome challenges, thus creating a well-rounded, resilient generation that can contribute positively to society. In this way, NYT transcends mere entertainment; it establishes a foundation for nurturing engaged, informed, and compassionate community members.
Here’s an inspiring quote from a family involved with NYT that highlights the organization's profound impact on the community and its youth: "NYT is more than just a theater. They are a family, a ministry, and a group that shows youth the true meaning of glorifying God through their gifts and talents. This is a group whose ministry is bringing glory and honor to God, with some pretty fabulous song and dance on top."
Consider investing in your children's future by encouraging them to participate in musical theater. Enroll them in a local theater program, classes, or camp to help them embark on an enriching journey that can shape their lives in countless positive ways.
We invite you to join NYT productions this spring, featuring performances of Matilda, Aladdin Jr., and Shrek: The Musical Registration is now open for summer camps for ages 6 to 19. Additionally, there are summer show opportunities with The Prince of Egypt, Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr., and Fiddler on the Roof
