Happy February!

I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season.

To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere a little in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in your local community.

While we teeter between the chill of January Winter and the excitement of Spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street. In your neighborhood and your community.

“Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community - but it also means loving what is near. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month.

Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like.

Our hope is that we inspire you to love it just a bit more than you did before.

Love, RACHAEL AND THE CROSS

The Touring Chocolatier

Touring Chocolatier owner Kay Thibodeux encourages customers to come for the chocolate, but stay for the adventure.

One bite and Kay Thibodeaux was hooked.

As a jewelry salesperson, Kay had never considered working in the food industry, but after attending a chocolate festival in Wisconsin –  everything changed.

Upon trying a delicious chocolate sample created by the premiere chocolate maker Dove, Kay felt inspired to take action. She inquired about the company’s home sales program, and thought perhaps she could grow her sales experience by offering sweets to her jewelry customers.

A year and many brownie sales later, Kay decided to attend Dove’s annual conference.

“I came home from the Dove chocolate conference, put the jewelry in a closet and never sold it again,” said Kay.

After falling in love with the desserts and employee culture at Dove, Kay got to work. She earned every incentive trip the company offered, rose to management positions and brushed shoulders with some of the world’s best master chocolatiers.

Exposed to the ins and outs of chocolate by Dove’s experts, Kay realized she wanted to take her confectionary career to the next level. In 2017, She decided to make a lifetime commitment to chocolate, and earned her professional chocolatier certification.

Pairing her artisan status with the inevitable decline of home sale programs, Kay started her own business from her home, making treats and teaching chocolate-making classes.

By 2020, she became a regular at farmers markets and despite the pandemic, continued to thrive.

Her coveted hot chocolate bombs served as the perfect product amidst viral food trends.

Bolstered by her cocoa bombs, Kay opened her first store front. After several years of business, Kay has recently opened another store, in addition to her Northlake location, in the Lakeside Village community in Flower Mound, and has brought with her global flavor.

Largely inspired by her chocolate enthusiast trips to the cocoa farms of the Hawaiian islands, The Touring Chocolatier offers truffles and custom painted chocolates made with Kay’s own recipes. Meanwhile, Kay supports many of these hard-working island farmers by offering their unique bars in her store.

With a true traveler’s palette, Kay places an emphasis on flavor development, creating unique combinations like passion fruit, orange and guava, or “Aztec” a lively mixture of cocoa and cayenne pepper.

“The chocolate just speaks to me,” said Kay.

Maintaining an individual relationship with each of her vendors, Kay strives for quality in every bite.

“With a true traveler’s palette, Kay places an emphasis on flavor.”

She focuses on craft makers who control the entire process – from cocoa bean to chocolate bar, and often visits and works on the cocoa farms herself.

Other than Kay’s creations, the Touring Chocolatier offers baked goods, made by their exquisite baker, a recent graduate of Escoffier Pastry School in Boulder, CO, who brings her artisanal talents to sourdough breads, baguettes, Danishes, scones and much more. Alongside their baked goods, they offer a variety of giftable items, and group classes including truffle making and wine and chocolate pairing.

Beyond her passion for chocolate making, Kay’s biggest joy comes from cultivating community. She greets each patron with a smile and even invites them to share prayer requests or gratitude reports on a bulletin board near the shop’s register.

Now tucked into the walkable community at Lakeside, Kay feels that her and her chocolates are being embraced now more than ever. “This community has really come together,” said Kay, “I think we are going to work well together.”

LOCAL AUTHORS SHARE THEIR TALENTS OF WRITING RIGHT IN OUR OWN NEIGHBORHOOD

AMY MARTIN

While browsing in the Highland Village Barnes and Noble, I noticed a display that featured a local artist named Amy Martin. I spoke with the manager and asked if she was in our area. Yes, and she even comes in to sign her books from time to time. Martin’s passion for the earth and its care is evident in her latest publication called Wild DFW: Explore the Amazing Nature in and Around Dallas-Fort Worth. She is a nature enthusiast that enjoys sharing more about our wonderful north Texas environment while helping readers gain appreciation for its unique differences from other areas around this great state.

MARK BOWLIN

If you are a historical fiction fan, our north Texas neighbor, Mark Bowlin, has written some military adventures that will satisfy your interest in this genre. As a retired naval officer, Bowlin is no stranger to the life of a soldier. After his military retirement, he began writing books about two Texas soldiers and their journey through wartime Europe as they experience the triumphs and heartaches with the Texas Division in World War II. Visit his website to read excerpts from his award-winning Texas Gun Club series.

LAURA RILEY

As a children’s book author and mother of boys, Laura Riley understands the importance of reading to children every day from books that will captivate their attention. In her book The Legend of the Stinky Sock, a boy named Conner wonders if the myth of a stinky sock’s good luck is true. Is it the lucky, stinky sock or hard work and practice that make a good baseball player a great baseball player? Riley’s dream to be an author was inspired by her own child’s joy and creativity as he composed a writing project for school.

A ROMANTICALLY REFINED SPRING

DISCOVER THE SEASON’S TOP TRENDS WITH HANDPICKED LOOKS FROM LOCAL BOUTIQUES

This spring, fashion is all about embracing timeless elegance with a fresh, modern twist. Romantic details, breezy florals and sophisticated textures take center stage, offering women the perfect balance of beauty and wearability. Whether you’re drawn to soft pastels, intricate fabrics, or ladylike charm, these trends will inspire a season of effortless style.

ROMANTIC FLORALS

Spring’s perennial favorite, florals, is evolving with a mix of vintage-inspired designs and bold modern patterns. Watercolor florals and ditsy prints bring a sense of delicate femininity to dresses, while richly hued garden-party patterns exude bold confidence. Unexpected fabric pairings, like floral tapestry corset tops or metallic-infused brocade, make florals feel fresh and versatile.

LADYLIKE STYLE

For a refined look, ladylike fashion shines with demure accents and classic tailoring. Ribbons, Peter Pan collars, drop-waists and romantic fabrics like lace and boucle create a polished yet approachable aesthetic. Taking lace beyond the boudoir makes a statement in layers and unique combinations, such as a lace undershirt styled under fitted dresses. For added charm, ornate details like pearled buttons and metallic threads elevate these pieces to sophisticated new heights.

PASTEL PERFECTION

Spring’s color palette is a celebration of soft, elegant hues. Pale pinks, pistachio greens, and baby blues evoke a sense of calm and renewa. Accessories in coordinating shades, like pale pink earrings or sage green sweaters, create a cohesive look that feels both modern and timeless. To take these colors from day to night, metallic accents, such as silver purses or shimmering threads, provide the perfect finishing touch.

LOCAL SERVICE AND HOSPITALITY

CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE IDEA OF GATHERING AROUND THE TABLE TO ME? WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY “SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY”?

I always say that sharing a meal across the table from someone is a very intimate experience. Our purpose is to create spaces where people can come together, connect with their

PHOTOGRAPHY BY PIXEL PERFECT ROSE
Q&A with Marty Bryan
“If people are going to work and show hospitality, then they need to do it with a joyful heart.”

friends and family, and celebrate life. Well, it’s hard to connect in an environment if, say, the seats are not comfortable, the temperature’s too hot or cold, the service isn’t good, the lights are too bright, the music’s too loud or low... All those things play a part in allowing people to be able to focus on whoever they’re there with. If we can create an environment where that can happen, then we know we did a good job.

HOW ARE YOU FINDING WAYS TO ENJOY OTHER PEOPLE’S HOSPITALITY AND TO GATHER WITH THE PEOPLE YOU CARE ABOUT? HOW ARE YOU POURING INTO YOURSELF SO AS TO NOT POUR FROM AN EMPTY CUP?

I think my faith plays a big part in that. And, one thing about me, is I’m mature enough to know when I need rest and when I can go full blast for two or three months. What gives me joy is either going out to my

ranch [with] my son to hunt, going to see live music or to a nice dinner, and vacations with my family, those are things we do that help me get recharged and keep me going. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve certainly learned the value of good friends. Certainly, I’m around people all the time, engaging and visiting, but my inner circle that I just do life with is very small.

HOW HAS YOUR HEART FOR SERVICE PLAYED INTO YOUR ROLE AS A DAD AND A HUSBAND?

Anytime that you’re in the hospitality or service business, your goal is to please and do good. The good news for me is that my wife’s love language is acts of service. So one of the things I do to try to honor her is just to help keep the house in order. And I think the number one thing you can do to be a great dad is to love your wife and model what that looks like.

HOW ARE YOU PASSING DOWN THE VALUE OF HOSPITALITY AND SERVICE TO YOUR KIDS?

All my kids have worked for me. Brooks, my son, he’s 17. When he’s not playing football, he works either at Marty B’s Coffee or Ice Cream, so he’s learning what it’s like to serve others and how to deliver those things. Both of my two daughters are definitely gifted with the hospitality gene. They’re both very people-oriented and eager to please and serve. Madison, my middle daughter, worked for me all through high school and some in college. Now she’s working for Glacier, selling wine and spirits. Then [my oldest], McKaley, works for me, she’s our Director of Training and Development for Marty B’s Coffee, Marty B’s Ice Cream, and the upcoming wedding venue called The Reserve at Marty B’s. She’s all in. She has a hospitality management degree and she’s very involved and understands what we do every day to make it all happen.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE NOT LETTING SERVICE BECOME JUST A JOB? HOW DO YOU KEEP THE ACTUAL SERVANT’S HEART BEHIND IT?

I really think about it in two different lights. Service is the physical aspect of the job, the things you do, the act. Hospitality is how you make people feel, any good business demonstrates warm Southern hospitality.

“The number one thing you can do to be a great dad is to love your wife and model what that looks like.”

I could have done all the things, but if I’m doing it with a flippant attitude, well, that’s not the same. If I’m doing it from a joyful heart, then it’s totally different. If people are going to work and show hospitality, then they need to do it with a joyful heart.

HOW HAS SERVING PEOPLE GUIDED YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD?

I would say my relationship with God is what guides my business, more than the other [way around]. I pray that God uses me and my businesses to benefit our community, our employees and our customers. And hopefully, the way we make people feel when they’re in our

business says more about our faith than anything we say.

A FINAL THOUGHT

Jesus is probably one of the first restaurateurs. He had dinner with his disciples, washed their feet, and then went on to do the most selfless thing and died on the cross for our sins. We don’t wash people’s feet obviously, but we certainly wanna love them. People are in our businesses celebrating all things, it could just be life, friendship or annual celebrations. People choose our business to connect and celebrate at, and that’s a big responsibility, we wanna honor those customers who do that.

THE LURE OF SCOTTSDALE

FROM RELAXATION TO SHOPPING TO GOLF TO SIGHTSEEING, THIS DESTINATION HAS IT ALL

The endless skies of blue are interrupted only by cacti rising majestically from the ground, arms reaching skyward, and palm trees, which are often adorned by lights that twinkle when the sun sets. There are vistas of open desert, rising mountains, and even the lush green of the locale’s many golf courses. And, of course, there are the vibrant shopping, dining, art, and event scenes, too.

Scottsdale is a city located in Metro Phoenix in Arizona, which as a whole is nicknamed “The Valley of the Sun” for its more than 330 days of sun each year—one of the reasons the area is a draw for visitors. With few rainy days, it’s easy to plan your daily activities without worry. Yes, though, the summer gets hot. But the rest of the year? Perfection.

Scottsdale is a mix of a resort destination, city, and suburbs, with more open desert the further north you venture. To the south is Downtown Scottsdale —also known as Old Town Scottsdale—which is a mix of old Southwestern charm (including the legendary cowboy saloon, Rusty Spur Saloon); modern eateries from famed chefs; lots of shopping at small boutiques and specialty shops; the Arts District , which is filled with art galleries; and even tasting rooms from Arizona wineries located along the famed Scottsdale Wine Trail

Nearby is Scottsdale Fashion Square , one of the nation’s premier shopping destinations. While you’ll find many usual retailers there, there are also more than 40 luxury brands, including Christian Louboutin, Bottega Veneta, and Louis Vuitton.

Heading north are open-air shopping destinations Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland Commons , which sit across the street from each other. Take the afternoon or evening to stroll through, exploring the shops, restaurants, and activity destinations such as the indoor mini-golf destination Puttshack

What else is there to see and do? Plenty.

CULTURE

The beauty of Scottsdale’s Sonoran Desert led famed architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), to build Taliesin West , his winter home and desert laboratory, in a mountainside in East Scottsdale. Today, there are daily tours of the UNESCO World Heritage site, and events are offered often.

However, Wright’s architecture isn’t the only art in the area. Beyond the Arts District in Downtown Scottsdale, there is public art all around the city, from sculptures to murals, so definitely keep your eyes open!

There are also museums such as Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West , a Smithsonian Affiliate, which showcases items from the Greater Western region, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art , affectionately known as SMoCA.

On Thursday evenings, there’s a free public ArtWalk in the Arts District, where galleries stay open later. Wander the streets and galleries, often against a backdrop of live music and even artist appearances.

NEARBY

While there’s so much to do, see, and experience in Scottsdale proper, there’s also much to see nearby. Make sure to experience the Musical Instrument Museum (affectionately known as the MIM), which is the world’s only global instrument museum. Desert Botanical Garden features an array of desert plants, and Phoenix Art Museum has an impressive collection of art. And, of course, the Phoenix Zoo is a perfect place for both kids and adults alike.
