Love local

Dear Cullman,

February is here, bringing with it a season of love — and what better way to celebrate than by shining a spotlight on the incredible businesses that make our community so special? This month, our "Love local" issue is dedicated to the hardworking entrepreneurs and unique establishments that create the charm and character of Cullman.

From gathering with friends over a delicious meal to discovering new ways to spend time together, our local businesses offer something for everyone. Looking for the perfect spot to pick up gifts or treats for your loved ones? Stop by Man Cave Market, where you’ll find a variety of unique items perfect for the special people in your life.

If you’re in the mood for a bit of adventure and storytelling,  Southern Ghost Girls offers a captivating experience that combines history and a touch of mystery. It’s the perfect way to connect with our local heritage and enjoy a fun outing with friends or family.

For date nights or family dinners,  Pasquale’s Pizza & Pasta serves up hearty, homemade flavors that feel like a warm hug on a chilly February evening. There’s nothing quite like sharing a slice of pizza and laughter with the ones you love.

We also chatted with Kathy Sims with Alfa Insurance. She is a Cullman native and we wanted to hear what she loves about Cullman.

When we support our local businesses, we’re not just making purchases — we’re strengthening the bonds that hold our community together. This month, let’s celebrate the people behind the storefronts, the chefs in the kitchens and the dreamers who bring their passions to life in Cullman.

Here’s to loving local, loving life and spreading joy in every corner of our community.

With gratitude,

February 2025

Explore plants and more at The Man Cave Market

ARTICLE BY WENDY SACK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE MAN CAVE MARKET
The Man Cave Market carries many groovy items such as these.
Gorgeous orchids make great Valentine's Day gifts.

Pretty much everyone in Vinemont knows twin brothers Chris and Pat Thompson, the former having spent time on the town council, and the pair having opened the wildly popular Man Cave Market in 2020.

The brothers were wholesale plant distributors for more than 20 years before they opened the plant nursery/ shop/hang-out spot in April of that year. Believe it or not, it was the Thompsons’ literal man cave prior to that.

“We sold plants wholesale to florists all over Alabama, and during the pandemic we opened to sell to locals because all the florists were closed,” they said.

As it’s now February, the month for everything lovey-dovey, I asked the pair about the most popular items at The Man Cave Market for Valentine’s Day.

“We have beautiful orchids with a nice selection of pottery,” they said. “We also have a large selection of tropical plants, succulent gardens and a large selection of gift items!”

If you haven’t visited the market, you really should check it out. And if you feel inclined to just hang out and enjoy the atmosphere - do it!

“Our customers enjoy the relaxing ambiance, listening to classic rock and roll and the tropical jungle sounds in the tropical room for a feel-good vibe,” they told me in the past.

While it’s still chilly outside, it’s best to focus on inside plants.

“The benefits of indoor plants are the beauty they add to the home, and they also purify the air,” they said. “The Sansevieria plant is a very good example.”

Spring will be here soon, and The Man Cave Market has a special on-premises landscape consultation where you can see what your landscape would look like with your ideal trees, bushes and plants.

“Creating a landscape garden adds value to your property, which usually encourages neighbors to do the same, adding value to the whole neighborhood,” the brothers said.

You can find The Man Cave Market at 17897 U.S. Highway 31 North in Vinemont. Check it out online at www.facebook.com/ themancavemarket and www.themancavemarket.net

Historic preservation with a twist

Southern Ghost Girls and Paranormal Investigations

Lesley Ann Hyde is a successful local insurance agent. She also has a passion for history. It’s that passion that led her to a unique side business: Southern Ghost Girls Tours and Paranormal Investigations.

“In 2018 I decided I wanted to do something as a side gig that would bring me closer to people and do something fun while also giving back to the community. All my life I’ve had a passion for history and historic preservation. I’ve traveled extensively throughout the United States and around the world, and everywhere I went there was always a fun historical tour, haunted history tour or ghost walk,” Hyde shared. “I’ve always loved doing these types of tours in other cities so I thought to myself, ‘Why not bring this back to Alabama?’ There was nothing in Alabama like this and I said to myself, ‘I’m going to incorporate this into a business where people can go on tours, have fun learning about history and help raise money for historic preservation.’ Most of the tour companies that existed

in surrounding states didn’t give back to the community for historic preservation or charitable causes, and this was something I wanted to do.”

Southern Ghost Girls Tours and Paranormal Investigations investigates homes, historical landmarks, museums and other places in the southern United States.

Tours with the Southern Ghost Girls aren’t spooky; they’re intriguing! Especially for those looking for a different type of experience.

“We conduct all kinds of fun, family friendly events. We specialize in historic tours of different cities, haunted history tours, ghost walks, ghost hunts and interactive

murder mystery dinner events,” explained Hyde. “We do these types of tours for the public and we also offer private parties and events. The goal of our public tours is to raise money and give back. My tour company does tours in Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia. We love doing private events to make your occasion special and memorable. We do parties for corporate events, businesses, clubs, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and all types of celebrations. We cater the events to what is important to you and what you would like to get out of the event for your special occasion.”

Historic venues have a special place in Hyde’s heart.

“All the public events, such as the murder mystery, dinner events and the ghost hunts and haunted history tours, have the same goal, and that is raising money for historic preservation at historic venues. I’ve found that historic venues are always the last to receive funds. When we do an event at these public venues, we always give them a portion of the proceeds to help with renovations, preservation and sustainability. We have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for historic venues and historical societies. All of the historic venues that we have given back to appreciate our help so very much. There were several places that during Covid were barely hanging on and were in jeopardy of being closed down. My company helped them stay afloat and not shut down. It’s important for our future generations to continue to be able to enjoy and learn about the history of these places, so I was very proud of my company being able to help many venues.”

What should someone expect on a Southern Ghost Girls tour, murder mystery or ghost hunt, etc.?

“A fun, interactive event!” exclaimed Hyde. “You’ll actually be learning history while having a great time! You’ll be immersed in the action. All our events are family friendly, and we have a lot of moms and daughters and friends who come out together to our events. They can always expect a safe environment; if they’ve not ever done anything like this, they can trust we will help them feel comfortable. Everyone always goes away saying they had one of the best nights of their lives. It’s such a fun thing to do! It is our goal to transport the customer back in time to another

era and to immerse them into that historic moment. We dress in clothing authentic to the time period and era in which the events are set.”

She continued, “It’s so important to preserve these historic places and venues so that our future generations will know about them. All of the venues are appreciative of what we give back to them. Knowing that we can help is wonderful and exciting. We have new places calling us all the time asking us if we will host an event.  We appreciate how well received we have been and have had a great time helping others. I’m happy to say that we have 30,000 fans and followers on social media and we’re known throughout the United States and have even gotten a call from a production company in London.”

Visit www.southernghostgirls.com for more information, tickets to an event or to contact Hyde to schedule a private event.

ROMANCE AT PASQUALE’S?

Landmark all set to host lovebirds of any generation

It’s February, folks, and you know what that means. Romance at Pasquale’s? You bet!

“Since we reopened in April, I’ve had numerous married couples reminisce over how they had their first date in our restaurant years prior,” said General Manager Taylor Buckley.

Don't forget your sweet treat! Pasquale’s Pizza & Pasta is located at 915 Second Ave. NW (U.S. Highway 31) in Cullman.
“It would not be possible to have such a successful business without the support of those around us!”

“We’ve also had guests tell us about how they used to get dropped off at the old movie theater and walk across the field or down the street to come have dinner!”

The landmark pizza place on the city’s northwest side was the first pizza parlor in the county when it opened back in 1968. It’s both nostalgic and modern, and it’s all set to host lovebirds of any generation.

“We’re still playing around with what exactly we will be doing for Valentine’s Day, but one of the overarching points is that it needs to have a theme of love!” Buckley smiled. “After I accepted the position of general manager, but before I moved up from Orange Beach, Steve Morgan, one of the owners, sent me a video of a pizza that our then

staff of five people made, and it was in the shape of a heart! This would be difficult for us to replicate on a large scale like what we will be producing, but it gave me the idea of having our pepperonis in the shape of hearts on the pizzas.”

Pasquale’s isn’t just a romantic date destination; it’s also deeply involved in the community through donations to local sports teams and organizations, as well as being a donation site for Toys for Tots and The Link of Cullman County’s food bank.

“I think it’s very important that businesses give back to the community that they’re involved in,” Buckley explained.

THE APHRODITE

Decadent Valentine's Day cocktail

Some say, in Greek mythology, strawberries were created when Aphrodite wept for losing her love, Adonis.

Others say the strawberry is a symbol for Venus, the Goddess of Love, because of its heart shape and red color.

Strawberries are absolutely associated with modern Valentine's Day goodies, whether dipped in luxurious white, dark or milk chocolate, or blended into or as a garnish on a yummy, decadent cocktail.

Here's one recipe to make your sweetie this Valentine's Day!

• 0.75 oz. - De Kuyper Créme de Cacao

• 0.75 oz. - Monin Strawberry Syrup

• Fresh strawberries for garnish

directions:

Step 1. Add all ingredients to a shaking tin and shake vigorously for 1 minute.

Step 2. Strain into a chilled martini glass.

Step 3. Garnish with a fresh strawberry.

LOCAL Treasure

Nestled within the rolling hills and scenic landscapes of Cullman County, Alabama, the Clarkson Covered Bridge stands as a cherished piece of local history and a reminder of simpler times. These architectural marvels, once an essential part of rural America, have become symbols of heritage and craftsmanship. Cullman County’s rich connection to its covered wooden bridge offers a glimpse into the ingenuity and traditions of its early settlers.

In the 19th century, covered bridges were built across the United States to provide reliable crossings over rivers and streams. The wooden structures were covered primarily to protect the timbers from the elements, prolonging their lifespans. Builders often used local timber, making each bridge unique to the region it served. In Cullman, a county established in 1873 by German immigrants, these bridges became vital to connecting communities and fostering commerce.

Visit Clarkson Covered Bridge

Clarkson Covered Bridge is located at 1240 County Road 1043, Cullman, AL, 35057.
The bridge was once used regularly by farmers and travelers to cross Crooked Creek.

Cullman County’s Clarkson Covered Bridge (sometimes called Legg Bridge) was built in 1904. The bridge originally spanned Crooked Creek and served as a crucial link for local farmers and travelers. It was named after James W. Clarkson, who constructed the bridge, and the Legg family, who owned the land on which it was built. Measuring 270 feet in length, it is one of the longest covered bridges in Alabama.

The area gained historical significance during the Civil War. It is said that the area surrounding the bridge was the site of skirmishes during the Battle of Day’s Gap in 1863, adding a layer of historical intrigue to its story. While the bridge itself was built decades later, its location is a poignant reminder of Cullman County’s role in the nation’s history.

Today, the Clarkson Covered Bridge is part of a charming park that features walking trails, picnic areas and a serene view of Crooked Creek. It is a popular spot for residents and visitors alike, serving as a picturesque backdrop for photographs and a tangible connection to Cullman County’s past.

The bridge is more than just an architectural relic; it is a testament to the resourcefulness and determination of the area’s early settlers. It represents a time when craftsmanship and community were at the forefront of daily life. For Cullman residents, it is a source of pride and a reminder of the importance of preserving history for future generations.

As you walk across the creaking wooden planks of the Clarkson Covered Bridge, take a moment to reflect on the stories it holds. It stands not only as a bridge across a creek, but also as a bridge to the past, connecting us to the enduring spirit of Cullman County.

A special thank you to local photographer Jay Betts for these gorgeous shots of the bridge and park!

Covered Bridge is located at 1240 County Road 1043, Cullman, AL, 35057. There are also hiking trails, a picnic area, a dogtrot log cabin and a working grist mill.

Even though it’s growing by leaps, it still has old country charm with the morals of past generations. Religion and love of country are at the forefront of our town.

I was born and raised in Cullman, working at my dad’s small business, and grew up understanding the importance of customer service and hard work.

I’ve been at Alfa for over 10 years and it, like any other business, has ups and downs, but I can say what I love most are my customers. They become family and

it’s important to me to do my very best to take care of them. Some days I’m a mom, advisor and listener, but that’s OK. They’re my family!

I am an Ambassador for the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce and love every minute of it! It’s a way for me to give back to the community I love.
