My Daytona Holiday Traditions

As a transplant to Daytona, my wife and I embraced the opportunity to create new holiday traditions. Like many who have moved away from family and longtime friends, we’ve had to adapt and find joy in building our own Daytona holiday traditions. While it’s important to cherish the past, there’s something special about discovering fresh ways to celebrate –especially here in Daytona. If you can’t think of new traditions to start, here are a few to consider:

· Connect with loved ones through a video call, watching them open gifts from afar and sharing in the excitement, no matter the distance.

·  Most here don’t have a traditional fireplace to gather around, so why not light some festive, scented candles and enjoy a cozy evening streaming your favorite holiday movies or dancing to seasonal music with your spouse?

·  If your family lives elsewhere and can't visit, consider hosting a neighborhood block party – after all, many of your neighbors are likely in the same situation. If that feels too ambitious, you could simply invite a neighbor who may have lost a loved one to share a holiday dinner.

· Making a charitable donation is a tradition worth starting. If you're undecided on which charity to support, consider contributing to the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign. Funds raised are used to assist local families in need. Even if you can't donate you can nominate someone to be a beneficiary.

While the holiday season brings warmth and joy for many, it can also be a time of pain and loneliness for others, especially those who have experienced recent loss. Let’s extend grace, empathy, and love to those around us. My hope for you this holiday season is that you feel a sense of peace, love, and connection – and that we all remember to care for one another.

This month, we’re celebrating the unique charm of experiencing the holidays in Daytona. Supporting local businesses is always in style, so be sure to check out the Volusia Civic Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker on December 7-8. Surprise someone with an unconventional gift, like a festive bikini from Joy at The Bikini Company or a unique computer shaped like an oversized golf ball from Chris at Surf’s Up Computing Please support all of our advertisers who make this magazine possible.

ORNAMENT CLUSTERS

SUPPLIES

• 22 gauge wire

• Ornaments of at least 3 varying shades and sizes

• Wire snips

STEP 1

Cut desired length of wire for a cluster, about 24”

STEP 2

Add an ornament about 4” from one end of the wire and twist the wire around the top of the ornament to provide a base for your cluster. Twist about 5 times. You should still have about 4” of wire at the end; you will need it to tie onto your garland, tree, or wreath.

STEP 3

Continue adding ornaments to the wire, alternating sizes and colors until you have 4-6” of wire remaining.

STEP 4

Twist the remaining wire around the top of your final ornament 5 times to secure all of your ornaments in place. Making sure to leave at least 4” of wire in place at the end in order to tie onto garland, tree, or wreath.

STEP 5

Use the ends of the wire to attach to your holiday item of choice!!

Pro tip: Keep your clusters to the 24” length to keep from getting too heavy and/or having ornaments pop off. Ornaments will pop off at times, but they will still look gorgeous and you can always glue the ornament back onto to the top. Simple, gorgeous, and impactful!

Volusia Civic Ballet’s Festive Fantasy

PHOTOGRAPHY BY

This holiday season, the Volusia Civic Ballet (VCB) will transport audiences into a dazzling world of wonder and whimsy with their beloved production of The Nutcracker. Hosted at the historic Peabody Auditorium (600 Auditorium Blvd, Daytona Beach, FL 32118), this year’s performance will be a spectacular blend of artistry, tradition, and community spirit. A seasonal favorite, the production features over 70 talented dancers, 60 of whom are local children from dance studios across Central Florida, capturing the true essence of collaboration and the magic of the holidays.

A NUTCRACKER CHRISTMAS

CLARA’S DREAM: VCB’S MISSION OF EDUCATION AND DANCE

Like Clara’s enchanting journey through the Land of Sweets, VCB’s mission began in 1996 as a registered NGO wanting to inspire wonder, educate the community, and foster a love for ballet and other forms of dance. VCB offers a unique opportunity for young dancers to collaborate across studio lines, building not only a breathtaking production but also a dance community where creativity and talent flourish. Each year, this collaboration results in a different atmosphere on stage, with each child, regardless of skill level, playing a vital role in bringing the holiday magic to life.

A DANCE OF COLLABORATION: CHOREOGRAPHIC BRILLIANCE IN EVERY SCENE

The beauty of the Nutcracker lies not only in the story but in the seamless coordination of talent. What makes VCB’s production so extraordinary is its unique approach to choreography. Each scene is directed by a different choreographer, weaving together a tapestry of creative visions. This multifaceted artistry ensures that no two shows are ever alike, a reason why audiences return year after year to witness something fresh and new. Jerome Divito, Artistic Director from South Beach Dance, brings this collaboration to life. Guest performers from the Cincinnati Ballet,  Melissa Gelfin (Sugar Plum Fairy) and Rafael Quenedit Castro (Cavelier) from Cincinnati Ballet add a touch of professional elegance. This year’s Clara, portrayed by a 16-year-old local dancer Juliane Beatrice Carpio, she will lead audiences on a memorable adventure through the snow-covered woods and into the heart of the holiday season.

A WHIRLWIND OF SWEETNESS: THE SUGAR PLUM TEA

Before the curtain rises, children can experience the joy of the Sugar Plum Tea—a sweet, elegant pre-show

event designed to delight. For an additional $25, young guests will savor nut-free finger sandwiches, gourmet cupcakes, and chocolate milk or Lemonade. Each child receives a Nutcracker mug to take home as a keepsake. In their holiday best, children mingle, make friends, and bask in the festive atmosphere, all while learning about the world of dance. Parents are invited to observe this delightful gathering, adding a heartwarming prelude to the performance.

A QUIET WINTER WALTZ: SENSORY-FRIENDLY PERFORMANCE

For those who prefer a shorter performance, VCB offers a sensory-friendly version of The Nutcracker on December 7th at 2 PM. Tailored specifically for children and individuals with disabilities, this condensed one-act version features a gentle narrator guiding the audience through Clara’s magical journey. With a more relaxed environment and a shorter performance, this show allows younger and sensory-sensitive audience members to enjoy the experience in comfort and ease. Each year, VCB donates tickets to nonprofits everywhere to ensure the arts reach people of all abilities.

WALTZING INTO THE FUTURE: VCB’S VISION OF DANCE

As snowflakes fall gently on Clara’s dream world, VCB’s future glistens with new opportunities. Their spring Festival of Dance promises to bring dancers from across the region together for a two-day event celebrating the art of movement. Special guests will teach group numbers, while local studios will showcase their own pieces, all culminating in an unforgettable finale. VCB also continues its commitment to young dancers by offering scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000 for graduating seniors who have been part of the production for over three years and are invested in a future of dance whether it is professionally or as a passion hobby.

CAPTURING GRACE: A DECADE OF DANCE PHOTOGRAPHY

For nearly a decade, Deedee Sherman and Michael Cairns have been preserving the beauty of ballet through their lenses. Deedee, a seasoned ballet student, performer, and educator, brings a wealth of dance knowledge to each shot. Michael, a renowned Orlando photographer since 1989, has an impressive background, including long-standing work with the Orlando Magic and Orlando Ballet. His current focus blends corporate photography with dance schools, competitions, and individual dancer portraits, making this duo’s work a treasure trove of experience, artistry, and dedication to the art of ballet photography.

A LEGACY OF NOSTALGIA AND HOLIDAY MAGIC

As VCB Board President Nelly Droznin notes, “The Nutcracker is more than a performance—it’s a tradition steeped in nostalgia. Our goal is to keep that spirit alive while offering something new and different each year.” Through their dedication to collaboration and community, VCB continues to weave an ever-changing tapestry of holiday magic that beckons audiences back each season.

To learn more about auditions, how to get involved with Volusia Civic Ballet, or how to make a donation please email info@civicballetvc.org. Vousia Civic Ballet is a registered 501C3 and is still accepting donations as well as sponsors for this upcoming performance of The Nutcracker.

Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org

Elevate your holiday hot chocolate with a charcuterie experience

As winter settles in and the air chills, there’s nothing more comforting than a steaming cup of hot chocolate. While a simple cup of hot cocoa can warm the soul, why not take it up a notch and indulge in a hot cocoa charcuterie board? Picture a delightful spread of various hot chocolate flavors, mix-ins, and toppings, inviting you to create a personalized, delicious mug of joy. Let’s explore the wonders of old-fashioned hot cocoa and all the accompaniments you can use to create your very own hot cocoa charcuterie board.

THE DELIGHTS OF OLD-FASHIONED HOT COCOA

Old-fashioned hot cocoa transports us to simpler times and brings with it a sense of nostalgia. The slow, traditional process of making hot chocolate from scratch – with real chocolate, milk and a touch of sweetness – provides a distinctly memorable experience for the holidays.

OLD-FASHIONED HOT COCOA

Ingredients

• ¼ cup 60% cacao chocolate morsels

• ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa

• 1/3 cup white granulated sugar

• 2 cups milk

• 2 cups half and half

• 1 pinch salt

• ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Directions

Heat all ingredients (except vanilla extract) in a 2-quart saucepan over medium-low heat until almost boiling. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

CREATING THE PERFECT HOT COCOA

CHARCUTERIE BOARD

Gone are the days of selecting only between marshmallows and whipped cream as toppings. With a hot cocoa charcuterie board, you can delve into a world of flavors, textures and spices that will make each sip an adventure, and serve as a sweet centerpiece to your holiday gatherings.

Begin by selecting a variety of flavors and mix-ins, such as mini marshmallows, salted caramels, white chocolate morsels and peppermints. Pair your hot cocoa with delectable treats like cookies, gum drops, crème-filled wafer rolls or chocolate-covered espresso beans. Consider adding biscotti, chocolate-dipped spoons or chocolate-coated pretzels as well as whipped toppings and an assortment of sprinkles.

VARIATIONS TO SAVOR

Indulge in some exciting recipes that are sure to elevate your hot chocolate into fun and festive beverages during the holidays and throughout the colder months.

MINTY FRESH WONDER

Embrace the festive season with a mint-infused hot cocoa. Fancify your beverage with a peppermint stick or make your

own crushed candy cane dust for a touch of holiday cheer. This minty delight is a crowd-pleaser and a perfect indulgence for cozy winter evenings.

SPICY AZTEC ELIXIR

Channel your inner adventurer with an Aztec-inspired hot cocoa. Infuse your drink with a touch of chili powder and a dash of cinnamon. Garnish with a cinnamon stick for a festive presentation. This fiery blend will ignite your senses and warm you from the inside out.

GROWN-UP GRASSHOPPER

Transform your drink into a rich adult-only grasshopper hot cocoa by adding 2 oz. of crème de menthe or a shot of peppermint schnapps. Adorn with a crushed candy cane rim for a playful offering.

DECADENT SALTED CARAMEL INDULGENCE

Elevate your hot cocoa experience with a drizzle of homemade salted caramel. The combination of slightly bitter cocoa and sweet, buttery caramel is a match made in heaven. Sprinkle an extra pinch of sea salt for that irresistible contrast.

DAYTONA’S RESILIENT RECOVERY
ARTICLE BY TIFFANY JOUBERT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JONNY NOMAD

In the wake of Hurricane Milton’s swift and devastating arrival, the Daytona Beach community responded with resilience, support, and solidarity. Food Brings Hope, in partnership with organizations including Jeep Beach, Advent Health, Daytona Regional Chamber, Salvation Army, Volusia County, Halifax Urban Ministries, and Florida Power and Light, launched a large-scale relief event at Greater New Zion PB Church to serve the people most impacted by the storm.

The event provided hot boxed meals, non-perishable food items, fresh produce, clothes, shoes, toiletries, and essential household items like paper towels, bath towels, and cleaning supplies. 650 meals were served to the Midtown Community, and 600 meals were delivered to South Daytona. “We wanted to make sure no one went hungry and that people knew they weren’t alone,” said Greer.

Neighbors worked tirelessly, clearing debris and drying out local businesses to help them reopen. Krista Goodrich from Salty Dog Vacations used social media to make calls to action. The Junkless Junk Removal team, Logan Carnes and Kyle Marchun, volunteered their time and resources to individuals in need, including the Domestic Abuse Council, helping clear the site and restore essential services.

Coming just after the recent devastation from Hurricanes Ian and Nicole, Hurricane Milton brought additional heartbreak to a community still in recovery. Yet, the united response has shown the community’s strength and compassion. While homes and hearts have been battered, this Holiday season it remains seen that the Community is resilient and demonstrates the true reason for the Season. Love.
