Cheers, Del Mar!

OCTOBER 2016

E

ach issue of Del Mar Lifestyle is a fun month for us to celebrate the stories of our community but we've been excited for our Local Beer & Wine focus this month for a while. Del Mar and San Diego have so much to celebrate that is right in our backyard. This month, we take a look at the continuing growth in the craft beer scene on page 24. We also take a road trip to San Diego County's only local wine region....most people think Temecula but nestled in the hills near Ramona are over 32 wineries that beckon - see page 28 for more.

What's great about wine is we often enjoy it while sharing connections with family and friends. If you're having a formal get together or just an impromptu entertaining moment - we stopped into Venissimo Cheese and share some of our favorite pairing ideas on page 26.

What makes Del Mar so great is our support for community and we are excited to showcase one of the new hot spots in town, Tasting Room Del Mar. David and Evan Taylor and their star team show us what makes this restaurant so unique. Plus, we are excited for their first ever Local's Only Open House event on October 3rd. See page 38 for more on that upcoming event.

Speaking of events - don't miss the reveal for Molly M. O'Neil Design's new showroom on October 13th at 5 p.m. Stop by and say hello, and enjoy some great food and music with us. And finally, another fun Local's Choice this month from Bryan Mayer, Sommelier from L'Auberge Del Mar, who shares some of his favorite things on page 34. Cheers, Del Mar!

iming is truly everything. The timing of seasonal ingredients, paired with refreshing brews or invigorating wines, can enhance your senses for a unique culinary experience. The new local hotspot on our radar, which can help you with just that, is the Tasting Room Del Mar. Owned by past CEO-tech guru David Taylor and entrepreneur son, Evan Taylor, in collaboration with Executive Chef and General Manager Steven Lona and Wine Director Rusti Gilbert, Tasting Room offers the most unique farm-to-table wine and beer restaurant in North County. “We believe that food and drink are inextricably bound. We combine high-quality drinks, high quality food, and a wine cellar with retail options for beer and wine,” says Evan. “I had trouble finding a good place that I would want to go to. There is so much wine out there but with poor selection and staff that don’t know what they were selling,” explains David. After David’s extensive background in Silicon Valley, as the co-founder and CEO of CineForm, his business interests shifted to wine. In 2014, he and a business partner opened Cordant Winery in Paso Robles. David always enjoyed drinking wine and wanted to share his passion for wine with his community. As a result, at an early age, his son Evan, Tasting Room’s proprietor and Director of Sales, was immersed in the restaurant and hospitality industry.

Del Mar Lifestyle | October 2016

In 2015, the amazing opportunity came up to open a boutique wine bar. What once were Bruegger’s Bagels and a flower shop is now the newly renovated Tasting Room Del Mar. Timing was everything for this prime location. “The Del Mar residents love it and connect with the location,” mentions David. “Our mission is to provide a fundamental place and style of service with fine products, creating a casual elegance.” Having wine paired with small plates, and including beer tasting in the menu, set the foundation for when they met Executive Chef Steven Lona, who began in the restaurant industry in Costa Mesa and Laguna Beach, and eventually made his way to Del Mar’s seaside. In his role as the General Manager and Executive Chef at the Tasting Room Del Mar, his passion and love for food come through, implementing fresh ingredients and keeping the menu current with the changes in season. “We'd like to invite future guests to indulge in the wine and beer dinners we offer once a month. They are full course, well thought out experiences where guests can meet winemakers and brewers,” says Chef Steven. The restaurant also hosts local music on Thursdays, and has participated in community events like the Del Mar Summer Solstice and Taste of Del Mar. Wine is an essential part of the parings served here and with the guidance of sommelier Rusti Gilbert, who brings along her experience from other local establishments such as Addison at The Grand Del Mar, the extensive list of boutique wines at Tasting Room range from Europe, South America and California. Rusti hosts weekly educational sessions, pouring curated wines specific to the event and engaging with guests on the selection. Highly recommended is their “Surrender Series”- a threecourse tasting of plates paired with wines chosen by the chef. The pairings change almost daily and are often not traditional. Recent options included lamb belly with white Burgundy and local fish with Champagne. Chef Lona explains, “I write the food menu with my Chef de Cuisine, Jenny Goycochea. We both have a similar focus, which is why it works so well. We believe in cooking in a way that draws inspiration from the seasons and the farms. We often refer to our menu as ‘Modern Cooking, Local Harvest’.” Also modern made local here is the architecture and design by passionate furniture artist Gustaf Anderese Rooth who blends design creativity and quality in his one-of-a-kind pieces. “I was having trouble finding off-the-floor furniture that met our aesthetic and space (size) requirements, so working with Gustaf allowed us to get all the details just right,” explains David. “One example is the barrel stave bar stools that reinforce the wine and beer theme of our restaurant. They are made from high-toast (blackened) bourbon barrels. There is also a 12-person community table blending our desire for intimate seating for large groups, but also to encourage interaction with others at the table you might not know, all while reinforcing the design style that matched the theme of our restaurant. I think the community table is one of the hallmarks of our outdoor patio space!” TastingRoomDelMar.com

ver winced at the idea of surgery, thinking of all the pins and needles targeted at you? Well, now you needn’t worry because you can find one of the latest technologies in non-surgical body contouring and fat removal right here in Solana Beach…Verve Plastic Surgery offers SculpSure – a non-invasive laser treatment for the reduction of stubborn fat!

Dr. Anshu Gupta, founder and owner, is excited to share this revolutionary body contouring system with locals. Trained in plastic surgery at Indiana University and the prestigious Mayo Clinic, he possesses not only impeccable credentials but also advanced skills and familiarity with the latest technology. “Laser technology for fat removal has been around for about 20 years, but the results have been minimal. Six years ago, cool sculpting was popular, with a 23 percent reduction in fat, but it caused nerve damage for some patients,” explains Dr. Gupta. “With SculpSure, not only do patients experience a 24 percent reduction in fat within 6-12 weeks of the procedure, but results have been proven by MRI studies. In addition, patients can rest assured about the safety of the procedure as it is the first of its kind to be approved by the FDA.” Dr. Gupta is an expert in performing a broad spectrum of surgical procedures, including breast augmentation and reduction, tummy tucks and liposuction, and face-lifts and rhinoplasty, among others. In addition, he provides a range of non-surgical procedures that are less invasive, with quite remarkable results. These include Botox injections, injectable dermal products that help to provide a more youthful appearance, and laser skin treatments, including unwanted hair and tattoo removal as well as lessening the appearance of wrinkles and varicose veins. He explains the process with Sculpsure is safe and simple, with no anesthesia involved and most patients requiring only one treatment. The system is a laser device with four adapters that may be placed on four targeted areas at a time for approximately 25 minutes. The 22

Del Mar Lifestyle | October 2016

procedure is very popular for those targeting common fat reduction areas like the lower belly, flanks and thighs. On average, the first area costs $1600 and the second costs $1400, with the third and fourth areas also discounted. Other popular procedures Dr. Gupta performs are tummy tucks and the “mommy makeover”, which addresses areas often affected by pregnancy and childbirth, including the belly and breasts. But his practice is not limited to cosmetic or elective surgeries alone. He is one of the foremost experts in San Diego in advanced breast reconstruction for breast cancer survivors. The process most often involves the use of a deep inferior epigastric artery (DIEP flap), and for this complex surgery, Dr. Gupta removes tissue from the abdomen and attaches the blood vessels to those in the chest so the flap can develop its own blood supply. He then shapes the tissue into a natural looking breast. Dr. Gupta estimates that he performs approximately 250 breast reconstruction surgeries per year, “It is among the most rewarding procedures I perform.” VervePlasticSurgery.com

oliday cheer is near. While festive dinners and office celebrations will undoubtedly fill your social calendar this season, there’s a lot to be said for impromptu get-togethers.

After all, small and spontaneous can be the most fabulous of all. Luckily, our friends at Venissimo Cheese make holiday gatherings exceptionally special— even those pulled together at the last minute. Owner Gina Freize has created the ultimate pairing menu that harmoniously unites affordable wines from around the globe with palate-pleasing cheeses offering a cornucopia of tastes and textures. Besides, who isn’t obsessed with wine and cheese? Let the holidays begin!

Road Trip

The Wine-ing Road to

RAMONA

ARTICLE DAN AUSTIN | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS BRAKE

W

hen most people think local wine in San Diego, Temecula first comes to mind. While we have our favorites there, we decided to take a road trip to San Diego's closest and only wine region in the county - Ramona. That's right! Just 40 minutes away, you can explore 30 wineries set along beautiful rolling hills and mountain roads. Our day trip was like a vacation without being far from home at all.

1 Stop 1 (12:02pm) - Hatfield Creek Winery

Norm and Elaine were our hosts when we stopped in to visit. They were generous with their time with harvest just a few days away. Their winery is set on a property that is mission style and you feel like you're a world away. Stop in to enjoy some incredible wines but leave some time to see their memorabila from their lifetime of adventures including a tribute to aviation, classic teardrop camper and more! We can't get enough of their 2013 Estate Reserve Petite Sirah. Tasting Room open Friday - Saturday - Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.-ish HatfieldCreekVineyards.com

2

Stop 2 (1:16pm) - Ramona Ranch

Just up the road on the 78 and into the mountains, we hit Ramona Ranch. The tasting room, of course, is a fun stop to sample their wines but we just couldn't get over the view from their outdoor table. It's like going to a friend's dinner party you won't want to leave. Teri and Micole have been in Ramona over 12 years now and when you stop by, you will instantly feel at home. We suggest the 2013 Montepulciano - Normally you'd need to go to Italy to try this easy drinking red! Open Friday - Saturday - Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. RamonaRanch.net

Del Mar Lifestyle | October 2016

3Stop 3 (2:04pm) - Turtle Rock Ridge

Turtle Rock was born after the area was ravaged by the Witch Creek fire and you would almost think they have been here for much longer. Enjoy tasting inside and take time to explore their beautiful outdoor area that overlooks a sweeping vista of the region. The name is very intentional here as they do have a pretty impressive rock formation that will remind you of a turtle when you get up close. Laurie and Ian and their family are gracious hosts and we loved hearing that it had been a childhood dream of Laurie's to turn grapes into wine. Ask about their Sangria - it's a fan favorite and great story! Tasting Room open Friday - Saturday - Sunday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. TurtleRockRidge.com

ON OUR LIST FOR OUR NEXT TRIP... - Poppaea Vineyards: Open Saturdays and Sundays from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m. Weekday visitors should phone ahead to check availability since these are the days when vineyard and winery tasks are managed - they offer tours on weekends that we would recommend for the causal and serious wine enthusiasts. What makes Poppaea unique is unlike most vineyards, they do their process manually - reminiscent of how wines were made centuries ago in Italy and ancient

4

Stop 4 (3:06pm) - La Finquita Winery

Our friends at Hatfield Winery told us about their neighbors with a wine cave so of course we needed to make sure our adventure included a stop here. We were not disappointed. With a hot but comforting Summer breeze blowing, we stopped into the tasting room to meet Jess - one of the owners. She and her husband Charles bought the property in 2013. The name means "little farm" but given their location, it doesn't feel little at all. Come for the view - stay for the wine, and don't miss the wine cave where they host special events and dinners. If you go over the holidays, don't miss the hot mulled wine (seasonal) - they say it's like Christmas in a glass. Open Friday 2 p.m. 7 p.m., Saturday 11 p.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. LaFinquitaWinery.com

Rome. Poppaea-Vineyard.com - Art & Wine Festival: Celebrating Ramona's local fine art, wine and culinary delights on Saturday, November 5th, 2016 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. RamonaArtAndWineFest.net Your day trip or Ramona adventure offers so many options. To plan your trip or just explore what's just up the road online before you go - check out the visitor association's official website. RamonaValleyWineries.org October 2016 | Del Mar Lifestyle

Financial Buzz

Greater Financial Freedom with

Reverse Mortgage Loans

ARTICLE SHANNON BARR PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS BRAKE

F

or retirees who didn’t save enough to finance a long-lasting retirement, or for homeowners who want more financial freedom, a reverse mortgage loan could be the solution. It is a great way for homeowners aged 62 and older to convert their home equity into a liquid, tax-free asset without being burdened by monthly payments. “We can pick and choose the program that is going to be best for you, we represent seven major lenders,” says William (Bill) Smith, Sr., a Reverse Mortgage Specialist and General Manager of Reverse Mortgage West, a California reverse mortgage broker. An Encinitas resident who’s lived in San Diego for more than 18 years, he has helped more than 600 seniors obtain reverse mortgages during his 14+ years in the industry. Instead of paying down the mortgage principal at a monthly rate, the principal and the interest on a reverse mortgage loan are paid after the homeowner no longer lives in their home. This enables the homeowner to meet any personal financial goals, such as buying a new home or supplementing monthly income. The benefits are many - a homeowner can obtain long-term care insurance, defer social security, and avoid spend-down of current assets, among other perks. Smith believes in taking a personal approach with each client. “This is probably the most important financial decision that many homeowners will make for the rest of their lives,” he shares. A common misconception he points out about reverse mortgage lending is the belief that the bank owns the home and will eventually tell the homeowner the loan is due so they must leave. This is false; with a reverse mortgage, the homeowner continues to own their home, just as they would any other mortgage. The reverse mortgage loan is not due until the borrowers sell the home, permanently move out, or pass way. If there’s more money owed on the reverse mortgage than the home is worth, then the borrower or heir is never personally

32

Del Mar Lifestyle | October 2016

responsible to pay the loan out-of-pocket because the department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has guaranteed the loans to the bank. Heirs will never owe more than the house is worth, even if it is worth less than the amount borrowed. They have the option to buy the home and pay off the loan, or sell the home and take the equity. “Heirs have a privilege,” says Smith. “They can buy the house for 95% of its then-appraised value, or the loan balance amount; whichever is lower.” A homeowner with a reverse mortgage loan can receive the taxfree proceeds either as a lump sum, a line of credit, a monthly income check, or a combination of each. To calculate the amount a homeowner may obtain, the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) considers three objectives: 1.) Age: The older you are, the more you get. 2.) Value of the home: The more a home is worth, the more the homeowner will receive. 3.) The interest rate at the time of the loan. The lower the interest rate, the higher the proceeds. HUD caps the home loan value at $625,500. If an individual’s home is worth more, they can still get a reverse mortgage, but $625,500 is the amount considered when calculating the value of proceeds. Reverse Mortgage West offers a jumbo proprietary loan available to homeowners whose properties are worth more than $1M. “When you’re helping somebody get a reverse mortgage, you’re improving their lifestyle, giving them greater peace of mind,” says Smith. “That’s 100 percent of the time.” WSmithReverse.com

Parting Thoughts

Happy Hour Work Environment ARTICLE HARVEY NEIMAN

I

certainly don’t want to encourage people, especially young folks, to enjoy alcohol while on the job. That’s a no-no; zero tolerance! However, most of us know that Southern California lifestyle offers “happy hour” at most popular restaurants and bars, typically timed for the end of the working day. As for me, my working day can occupy any portion of a 24-hour period. So, when the timing is right, I like to combine two fun activities - creative work and libation. Being an author and a stock investment portfolio manager, I often ask myself why not go to a favorite “watering hole”, and bring along my laptop? I am often most creative, both in my writing and in my stock investments, while chugging a chilled IPA or sipping a buttery chardonnay. I can’t think of a more fun way to “spell check” my just-written action scene or to pour over financial statements of a recently received stock tip. In the world of hand-crafted San Diego beers, there is no place more fun than San Diego’s home-grown Karl Strauss Brewery restaurants. Equally friendly for children and beer drinkers of all ages is Pizza Port. In North County, Karl Strauss can be found in Carlsbad and in 4S Ranch. Pizza Port has locations in both Solana Beach and Carlsbad. I visit both of these fine brewed-beer sanctuaries quite frequently, usually requesting one of my favorite India Pale Ales. My

taste buds usually get “happy”, the minute I get “hoppy”. Both Pizza Port and Karl Strauss have delicious food, at fair prices, presented with friendly, efficient customer service. Ah, you ask, don’t I drink wine as well? Yes, my new Surface laptop operates just fine with a glass of chardonnay or smooth pinot noir close at hand. North County is not lacking in convenient wine tasting venues, as well. I frequently enjoy visiting either 3rd Corner on Pacific Coast Hwy in Encinitas, or Wine Steals on San Elijo in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. Both have a broad selection of wines at competitive prices, for consumption on premises, or for retail carry away. If you consume your wine purchase on the premises, a reasonable corkage fee of $5 or $6 is added to the bottle price. Naturally, both entities have numerous selections sold by the glass, along with ample selections of meals and appetizers. Food pricing might be slightly higher at 3rd Corner, but not by much, as compared to Wine Steals. The food selections are quite tasty and filling at both establishments, and they both have outdoor patios. If one is a music lover, local artists have been seen and heard playing live music at Wine Steals. My goal is to try to be productive while enjoying a beverage of choice. In other words, at the end of most other people’s working day, I can still be productive “after hours”, and enjoy myself at the same time!
