“Real Talk San Diego... Your New Business Matchmaker”
Real Talk San Diego Airing weekdays on ESPN 1700AM, Real Talk San Diego is designed to give a voice to local entrepreneurs and business professionals who positively impact communities throughout our region. The various radio shows encompass 16 hours of local programming hosted by various leaders across a number of industries. Although the original intent of the show was to educate the listening audience about local business resources, it has evolved into something more. “We discovered that ourhosts, cohosts and guests were forming professional relationships with one another,” said Executive Producer Brett Ward. “It’s like Real Talk has become a businessmatchmaking service.” Perhaps the best example of this is Solana Beach resident Ryan White, Realtor with the Guiltinan Group, and his cohost Karen Kaseno, Forensic Accountant and founder of The Kaseno CPA Firm. “When I was introduced to Karen and found out what she did fora living, I asked to interview her on my show,” said White. “She provides an amazing service to people in need and I wanted others to know about it.” “Our experience on the show together presented us with opportunities to promote andsupport each other’s businesses,” continued White. “She and I have been able to refer a ton of business back and forth, and Real Talk has allowed us to quickly expand intointo each other’s professional networks.”
After several guest appearances, White asked Kaseno if she’d like to cohost his show. “It was a nobrainer for me,” says Kaseno “He’s a super smart guy. He pays attention to details more than others in his profession. I know my clients are in good hands when I send them to Ryan.” White has been in real estate for 14 years and manages over 100 vacation rentals in the San Diego area, so it’s safe to call him an “expert.” Although he buys and sells properties all over the county, White’s “home turf” is really Solana Beach and Del Mar. “I prefer to focus on my backyard because it’s what I know best, and that knowledge is transferred to my clients and business partners like Karen.” Kaseno has been a forensic accountant for more than two decades and is widely respected in her profession. “I always thought radio was just about appealing to the listeners. I never considered the networking and business building aspects of cohosting a radio show. It’s given me the opportunity to build a group of elite contacts,” said Kaseno. Real Talk San Diego gives a genuine voice to local business leaders who might not otherwise have an opportunity to showcase their business and tell their story.

G
reetings Del Mar! Welcome to the February issue of Del Mar Lifestyle. This being February, I suspect that many of our hearts and minds find themselves pondering love. As I sat down to write this, I found myself pondering love. I considered attempting to articulate what love means to me. I considered writing a long-winded soliloquy regarding broad themes of love. However, in the end, I’ve decided to let a quote from one of my favorite novels perform that task for me. Bear with me:
“Love—and all its complicated ramifications, Draeger believed— actually does conquer all; love—or the fear of not having it, or the worry about not having enough of it, or the terror of losing it—certainly does conquer all.” - Ken Kesey Sometimes a Great Notion Actually, I cannot let that quote do all the work for me. Our writers here at Del Mar Lifestyle have done their part as well by highlighting a few local iterations of love, Del Mar style. This month we’ll highlight Tsavo’s Canine Rehabilitation, a wonderful establishment that provides man’s best friends with a unique place to heal and thrive. We also have Blink Lash Boutique and Blush Tan to help make your Valentine’s Day as beautiful as possible; find out how you can pamper yourself with love at Blink Lash and Blush Tan. And be sure you don’t miss this month’s parting thoughts: “Love is in the Air,” a lovely way to end our February issue. Last but certainly not least allow me to welcome our new owner/publisher Dan Austin. Dan is extraordinarily passionate about highlighting the best Del Mar has to offer. Our readers can rest assured that going forward we are in very good hands. Enjoy Valentine's Day and I'll see you around town,

FEBRUARY: The Month of the Heart
Give Yours Some Loving Care ARTICLE CORIE GOODSON
T
he heart is often referred to as the symbol of love. While love is vital to a fulfilling life, a healthy heart is crucial to it. A healthy heart functions without us having to even think about it. It beats about 100,000 times per day and pumps 1.5 gallons of blood through the body per minute. The more in shape the heart is, the lower the heart rate because a stronger heart can pump more volume per beat. Made up of its own specialized cells that are not found anywhere else in the body, the heart pumps nutrient- and oxygen-rich blood through the cardiovascular system. The blood is essentially a delivery system and a garbage truck. It first nourishes us, and then transports toxins and metabolic waste to the kidneys and liver for disposal. Without this vital system, we would all cease to exist. Unless we develop a problem, we don’t pay much attention to what our heart does for us 24 hours a day. Kind of makes you want to give it a bit more respect, right? That’s especially true when you hear the statistics that say heart disease and diseases of the cardiovascular system remain the number one reason lives are cut short. Heart disease can go undetected and be asymptomatic for decades before an incident occurs. No one gets critically ill overnight, which means heart issues cannot be reversed overnight either. The good news is that we can often help change destiny. While heart disease can be hereditary, it may not necessarily have to dominate one’s landscape.
We do have a lot of control over how healthy we are by taking some simple steps. Small changes can add up to big results over time, especially if there isn’t a major defect that cannot be altered by lifestyle alone. Most of us know now that the traditional food pyramid we grew up with is completely upside down and antiquated. It has long been thought that reducing fat in the diet was the primary way to reduce heart disease. When it comes to convenience and fast food, I would agree. The more modern contention is that we should eat food that doesn’t come with labels. Fruit, veggies, nuts and seeds, eggs, meat and fish should dominate your grocery cart. Single-ingredient, nature-made food eliminates the often confusing list of ingredients. Avoiding the inner aisles of the grocery store as much as possible makes this easier. Cardiovascular exercise is as important to keeping the heart healthy as what we eat. As little as 30 minutes a day can change your health profile. So, instead of perpetuating the saying that “we are a nation of people living short and dying long,” let’s get up, get moving and put nutrient-dense foods on our plates to keep that wonderful small, but mighty, organ running its best for as long as possible. Corie Goodson, MPH, CNC, earned her master’s degree in public health in 1995. She is a health educator, wellness promotion speaker, author and certified nutrition coach.

iar tourist destinations in the country, the northerly regions afford a unique travel experience, far-removed from the fast-paced fancy cars and lit-up signboards synonymous with city life depicted in movies and shows. There are many ways to explore the Land of the Rising Sun, authentic among them being a journey with Walk Japan, hiking and trekking through smaller villages and towns, indulging in the beautiful and iconic scenery of the Tohoku region, wandering along the rugged Sea of Japan coast and all the while, enjoying encounters of the friendly kind. The Japanese are thrilled when foreigners visit to learn about their culture and lifestyle, and take great pride in sharing their home and country with others. English is not very widely spoken outside of the large cities so a tour guide is highly recommended. Much of Japan is mountainous and hilly, and most areas made accessible with an intricate web of walkways, stairs, trails and more. Coastal areas like Matsushima and the island of Sado-ga-shima are accessed through the waterways – jetfoil and ferry being common modes of transport. You will be inspired by some of the greatest scenery to be found in Japan including this, one of the classic Three Views of Japan – the pine-clad islands of Matsushima are a delight. The bustling port brings in visitors and tourists alike. Sado-ga-shima, on the other hand, once a place of exile for enemies of the land, today gives guests the opportunity to enjoy quiet coastal life and local delicacies as well as a chance to understand its past glory when it was a booming gold mining town. The crested ibis, once found here in abundance, is now no more a common sight but locals hold it in high esteem, and its likeness is seen on products in the area. CONTINUED >

Another aspect to the tourism in these areas is the historic relevance of local sites. Hiraizumi, Japan’s latest UNESCO world heritage site, featuring the Chuson-ji and Motsu-ji temples, provides an inkling of the area’s past splendor, once considered to rival that of Kyoto. Motsu-ji has been restored to its 12th century grandeur and Chuson-ji includes the Golden Hall - one of the most elaborately decorated Buddhist structures in Japan. The gardens here are simply spectacular, and the chrysanthemum festival is a must-visit. Traditional inns, called ryokans, are a great way to experience Japanese culture. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Cornell University, a Registered Veterinary Technician license, and a Canine Rehabilitation Certification from the Canine Rehabilitation Institute in Florida. In addition, she has over 18 years of experience in western veterinary medicine including oncology, orthopedics, internal medicine, dentistry, and emergency/critical care. Wichtowski created her canine rehab center in honor of her former dog Tsavo, a boxer/pitbull mix, who was diagnosed with cancer at six-years old. Not wanting him to undergo radiation treatments and a dependence on prescription drugs to mask the pain, Wichtowski, already a veterinary technician, explored alternative medicine. The combination of proper nutrition and exercise combined with acupuncture, chiropractic work and even Chinese herbs were key components that improved his health. Tsavo lived a pain-free and happy life till almost 14-years-old, without prescription pain medication or steroids. Tsavo’s Canine Rehab’s focus is on healing the dogs’ condition with long-term goals in mind. “We operate with the kids and owners as the priority,” says Wichtowski. They provide a fun and comfortable environment, and treat each dog as one of their own even referring to them as “kids." A treatment plan is designed for each patients’ specific needs with cases ranging from panosteitis, immune mediated polyarthritis, stroke patients and brachial plexus injuries, to post-op surgery cases and older pets with severe osteoarthritis. Canine hydrotherapy is one of the foremost rehabilitation services offered. Water exercises in the “Splash Zone,” an indoor pool lined with doggie life vests and toys, or walks on the underwater treadmill allow patients to recover and stay fit in a non-weight bearing environment. The buoyancy of the water decreases the stress and pressure on
the joints so that muscle strength and fitness can be built. The physical properties of the water can be altered to modify the desired effects; warm water increases blood circulation and flexibility while underwater jets create more resistance to build muscle mass. Degenerate, post-surgical or obese dogs can take advantage of hydrotherapy. Further non-traditional and cutting-edge techniques are being practiced with Pulsed Signal Therapy (PST). “It is one of the only modalities/treatments that actually heals!” claims Wichtowski who further shares that it usually only needs to be done once in a patient’s life. PST involves directing a pulsated magnetic signal to the injured area. This signal mimics the body’s biological signal that stimulates cellular repair in cartilage, bone, and soft tissue. Currently this technique is practiced in Europe and Canada (since 1992) for people, and in the United States on animals. This form of treatment is non-invasive with no side effects, and greatly reduces the need for pharmaceutical drugs. It is not a “magic pill” Wichtowski reaffirms; it does take time and needs to be combined with other therapy. Another practice is observed in the carpeted and dim lit “Zen Room.” Wichtowski works with “CC” for a 30-minute session of cold laser therapy and bodywork to provide pain relief and resolve inflammation. The ten-year-old Labrador had TPLO surgery (knee). She is now older with some arthritic joints and spondylosis, and Mom wants to keep her agile and pain-free. CONTINUED >

Sitting with Wichtowski is CC’s mom, her client, who praises the amazing work done at Tsavo’s. Their patients and clients have become the marketing team – the plentiful and glowing testimonials on the website corroborate that. Other services include bodywork, nutrition education, grooming, acupuncture, chiropractic, homeopathy, and western and eastern herbs. Dog Dreams Foundation, a non-profit, full-service veterinary facility dedicated to canine rescue organizations in Southern California, is next on the horizon for Wichtowski. “It will be the first of its kind in the world, and we hope it will become a model for other states. It is desperately needed, as rescue organizations spend 80-90% of their funds on medical bills. This money could be used towards public education, spay/neuter programs, and rescuing more kids.” Tsavo's Canine Rehabilitation Center, Inc. is located at 2120 Jimmy Durante Blvd., Suite 120, Del Mar, CA 92014. you can have that year-round glow, courtesy of an all-natural spray that is hand-applied by a fully-trained specialist. The chemical-free solutions guarantee an even look without those embarrassing orange streaks typically associated with over-the-counter self-tanning products. “This is not a one-size-fits-all tan,” notes owner Christina Kauffman. “We provide an entire line of solutions so that we can appropriately mix colors to create the perfect base for each individual skin tone.” Blush Tan products do not leave you feeling sticky or wet, either, as each application is delivered via a fine mist by a trained specialist and not in a typical spray booth. The tan will last up to two weeks. Kauffman does caution, however, that this product should not replace sunscreen but is a healthy opportunity to build a tan. The blushtanÆ solution contains all-natural, anti-aging ingredients that not only help to moisturize the skin but also aid in reducing the appearance of cellulite, fine lines and wrinkles. “We use all organic products and take a conservative approach with each client,” explains Kauffman. “We never apply it darker than we should for your skin. Each application takes about 10 minutes and clients have the opportunity to consult with the sunless consultant to discover the best color for his/her skin tone.” To maintain this organic sunless tan, Blush Tan offers a variety of organic, fragrance-free tan extender products that clients may use as needed, much like a moisturizer, but without the sticky, orange after-effects. “Our goal is to help our clients look healthy and make them feel good about themselves while providing flawless results,” smiles Kauffman. Be sure to inquire about a special 20% offer on a full body tan the week before Valentine’s Day. For more information on Blink Lash Boutique, go online at BlinkLashBoutique.com or call 619.964.6082 (Mission Valley) or 858.436.4456 (Solana Beach); for more information on blush organic sunless tanning, go online at BlushTan.com or call 858.412.4029. Love in the Air ARTICLE HARVE Y NEIMAN
T
here’s Love in the Air! With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, and love in the air, I often feel I have a “love affair” with the stock market. My problem is that it doesn’t always love me! For those who follow stocks, 2016 began with a lackluster experience for most of 2015 in the stock market. The general market as represented by both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and by the S&P 500 Index, were pretty much flat for the year 2015. People always ask whether a Presidential election impacts the stock market. Well, with 2016 being an election year, and February being the first month for primaries, it might be easier to answer the question after we get a clearer picture of who might be the major party candidates. Usually, when a newly elected President is viewed as friendly to business, it’s generally viewed favorably toward the stock market. We’re still a few months away from knowing who the two major candidates will be. Much of the political scene is also a reflection of the state of our economy. If we get a new President who can get things done with Congress, there will be more confidence in our economy, from the perspective of consumers, which can only help our recovery. Even the huge multi-trillion US debt seems less of a concern to voters and candidates thus far in the presidential campaign. Not that the debt is going away, but the fact that the US deficit was reduced in 2015, suggests that our gradual economic recovery is real. Congress passed a huge $1.8 trillion spending bill before year end, suggesting we might start to get cooperation between a president and both parties of Congress, in the coming year. News at “11." A further sign of recovery appeared when theFederal Reserve finally began its long awaited action of raising interest rates by 0.25% back in December. The jury is still out whether the Fed will do the samenext month at their March meeting. Fed Chair Janet Yellen has indicated that as various economic indicators get stronger, the rate increases are likely to continue.
24
Del Mar Lifestyle | February 2016
Improving economic indicators should give us some comfort that our recovery is on a steady path. Those Americans planning European travel in the spring will enjoy a stronger US dollar than in recent years. By year end 2015, the exchange rate was less than $1.10 per Euro. Domestically, the rate of inflation was almost flat at 0.2% for 2015. This was strongly impacted by continuous lowering of oil prices, which was hovering in the high $30s per barrel at year end. That’s the lowest it’s been for a decade. Next, there was residential housing prices that increased in 2015, but only at a reasonable rate of approximately 6.0% over the prior year. As 2015 came to a close, mortgage interest rates remained attractive at below 4.0% for many types of residential loans. Unemployment rate, often viewed as the most important bell weather of economic recovery, fell to 5.0% by the end of 2015. In recent months, new jobs have been growing nationally at or near the desired rate of 200,000 per month. The only thing that often throws a wrench in our best laid plans is the international picture. Our confidence is often shaken by such things as economic weakness in Europe and China, unrest in the mid-east, terrorism at home and abroad, various natural disasters, and all the other events about which the media keeps informed. Yes, we need to be informed, and we should be concerned, but we should not let these events unnecessarily distract us from responsibly conducting our daily lives. Our nation is the economic and political leader of the world. When danger and harm affects us directly, of course we need to respond with vigor. But, there are numerous remote events in the world that we cannot control, and that we cannot fix, that are distractions from our economic well-being. If we can keep these distractions in perspective, and pay attention to our important daily lives, our economic recovery, both nationally and individually, will be quicker. By the way, once in awhile the stock market does “love” me back. It’s in the air! Harvey Neiman, author “Customize Wall Street”

Building Character in the Kids You Love ARTICLE BECKY AKRIGHT
T
o those of you with young children, I empathize. Feeding, bathing, buckling, chasing, dressing, then doing it all again is a physically exhausting day-into-night- into- day. You look forward to the time when your toddlers are in school, when you get a rest, when the pace will slow down. It’ll be so much easier once they’re older…right? Well, yes. And no. Your children will learn to feed and dress themselves, and you won’t be toting a baby, a carrier, and a diaper bag wherever you go. But parenting challenges never go away; they just change. And as children become social, as they go to school, participate in group activities, and interact with adults other than you, they will need the same kind of parenting energy as the early years – only this time, the energy changes from physical to mental and emotional. If you’ve put away the high chair, then get ready to focus on creating independent, confident, and strong children. And those children – those who can handle frustration, disappointment, and failure as well as success - come from parents who are not consumed with making and keeping their children happy. They come from homes that are not focused on buying more and buying better, and they come from families whose members are not isolated from each other by technology. I believe all parents want their children to have strong character, to be upright, and to grow into responsible, caring adults. I’ve been a parent, a teacher, a school principal, and now a grandparent, and I’ve never known any mom or dad who doesn’t want that. But it’s hard, and the expectations of our society, especially those of middle to upper income communities, mean that many parents’ actions don’t match that goal. But there’s help for those of you who want to raise kids with character – if you’re willing to step back, put the credit card away, take the cell phone at 9 PM, and – here’s the big one – allow your sons and daughters to handle
day-to-day situations on their own instead of rushing in to save them. Sometimes it even means letting your child fail. In Dr. Madeline Levine’s terrific book, The Price of Privilege, the author specifically and clearly addresses the issues that can cause many teenagers – especially teenagers from affluent homes – to become depressed, anxious, and under-achieving: high expectations, emphasis on materialism, disconnection, and adults who strive to make their children’s lives stress-free. She covers ages 2 – 17, and explains “how the culture of affluence works against the development of the self.” By making sure our kids have everything they want, expecting perfection from and for them, and making their conflicts our own, we are essentially keeping them from being, as Levine calls it, a “healthy self.” By clearing a path for our child and taking whatever steps necessary to keep him or her feeling happy, whether socially, in school, or on the sports team, we prevent that child from truly growing. Paul Tough’s book, How Children Succeed, echoes this. He believes, like Levine, that kids need grit, curiosity, and yes – failure – in order to become their best selves. When parents pull their children from uncomfortable situations, shower them with empty praise, or argue with a teacher over a grade, kids don’t develop into healthy selves. Instead, they become emotionally fragile, unable to handle inevitable frustrations and disappointments – and are almost always unable to say no in a pressured social situations. So is this a hands-off parenting approach? Hardly. In fact, it takes more parental time, energy, and consistency than just keeping kids “happy.” It takes courage, too, especially when other parents are taking the easy route. But in the end, we want our children to become strong, to have character, to recover from mistakes, and to be ready for the challenges life brings. It’s well worth the effort. Parting Thoughts
Love is in the Air ARTICLE ANNE POTTER RUSS
W
ho knew boarding a simple airplane 23 years ago in my blue sweat suit (think ‘80s wear) would change my entire life? Certainly not me, or I might have dressed a bit snappier and put on a smidge of makeup and perfume. But, I had reached that elusive place of peace in my quickly-nearing-explosion biological countdown when I figured if the right guy was to come along, I best relax a bit and calm down. So, calm down I did and donned one of the ugliest outfits I had for sheer comfort. In walks my seatmate for our eight-hour flight and we commence what could be termed as a date – dinner, movie, etc. There were way too many intelligent conversations, laughs and glasses of wine, and the next thing I knew, the sun was coming up on our trans-Atlantic flight and I didn’t want the fun to end. He was returning home to Germany, and I would eventually return home to Kansas City – worlds apart. He called a week later asking if he could come to visit for Christmas in a couple of weeks. “Sure!” I answered, not knowing how many martinis it would take to enlighten my parents of this impending event. So, I commenced, “I am 29 years old, you have trusted

me this long, blah, blah, blah.” Their shock equaled my freak-out. I’d known him for eight hours. When I went to the airport – in a much spiffier outfit – I actually wondered if I would recognize the gentleman who had wooed me weeks before. I had already endured all of the “Are you CRAZY?” comments from friends, so I took my chances that he would at least look familiar. Honeymoon is the word we use for those two weeks of Christmas bliss. Without question, we would end up together, so two years of trans-Atlantic, pre-Internet, large phone bill dating ensued. There were some language and culture barriers to overcome, and fortunately for my non-German speaking self, he was excited to move to the States. We were married two years after meeting, and immediately moved to California for his engineering job. Now, I have to giggle at people with text and Skype who complain about having to endure long distance relationships from New York to Boston. Love at first sight does happen, and sometimes it comes in a big old jumbo jet of a package. We are ready to celebrate our 22nd anniversary and have two wonderful teenagers. Maybe the blue sweat suit wasn’t such a bad choice after all.
