APRIL 2016 publisher
Dan Austin | Dan.Austin@LifestylePubs.com
s we worked tirelessly to put together our first Arts Issue, we realized that to truly cover the arts in our community there's so much more happening than we could fit in one month. The good news is there's more to come! We hope you enjoy our look into the various forms of art that make our community so vibrant and come alive! Art comes in so many forms - music, painting, sculpture, photography, design and performance art. This month, we take a look at everything from a celebration of new exhibits in town, the art of investing, the art of "repurposing", the art of Giving Back, to a look at artists that have touched our town, both past and present. Our feature story is a unique look at the arts in a community torn between a sports soap opera and saving the real opera…sound familiar? As I look over all the great stories we share with you, I'm seeing my two lovely children draw and create and discover the world of possibilities that their imagination dreams up. Imagine that - a world with limitless possibilities! That, to our family and me, is truly what the arts means. The imagination of what is possible leads to new experiences - new ideas - new forms of expression. We hope you enjoy our small part in showing you what is being created right here in our community!

DEL MAR CITY COUNCIL BANS PLASTIC BAGS The Del Mar City Council voted unanimously to ban single-use plastic carryout bags. Several county cities, such as Encinitas and Solana Beach, have already implemented similar plastic bag bans. The reasoning behind the ban centers on the environmental impact of plastic bags, according to the city’s Sustainability Committee. However, the proposed ban would not be applicable to the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The city of Del Mar will undergo a six-month phased implementation for retail establishments and a one-year phased implementation for restaurants and the Del Mar Farmers Market. Phase 1, for retail spaces, will go into effect on October 6, 2016. For

Gabrielle Benot
Creating Unique Masterpieces: ARTICLE ANN E. BUTENAS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
I
f painting is a language in and of itself, San Diego-based artist Gabrielle Benot is exceedingly fluent in her craft. Even the words she uses to talk about her passion seem to flow effortlessly, punctuated by a soft European accent and highlighted by the desire to create her own unique masterpieces while simultaneously coloring outside traditional lines of time and space. When she paints, Benot immerses herself into a meditative state, putting herself into a trance in which she seems to both simultaneously lose herself and find herself, and that is what she hopes viewers of her works will experience. “I love working with color and being intoxicated in a soulful way when I paint,” she says. Born in Latvia and raised in Denmark, Gabrielle was introduced to the world of painting at a young age. “My grandpa taught me to paint. He specialized in painting landscapes and generally painted with oils.” After observing her grandfather, Benot, a graduate of the Royal Fashion Academy in Copenhagen, started sketching and painting at a very young age and as her love of the craft grew, so did her talent. She refers to her style as semi abstract tempered with an expressionistic style. “I can get inspired by anything,” she explains. “I like to paint on the floor using a very large canvas and I put visuals all around me, such as books, magazines and personal photos, and I take a little bit of everything and incorporate all of that into my work.” Benot gradually developed her unique style over the past several years, drawing upon the influences of artists such as Jean Paul Riopelle, Gustav Klimt and Joan Mitchell, eventually assuming her own abstract signature style by simply allowing herself to let go. “My greatest inspiration is Klimt, as so many of his paintings are not finished,” she comments. “But I can see the history behind each painting. When I am painting, I am not aware of the final result of what I am doing. It’s a free flow. I have an initial idea, but the result can be very unpredictable.” Benot enjoys an analytical and imaginative mind. She thrives on the process of self-discovery and imagination while at the same time analyzing 12

and experimenting. She favors bold, large and intense brush strokes, capturing the spirit of the painting in texture. Of course, it is imperative that music always accompanies her discipline. Her artistic prowess results in paintings that are powerful and speak to the viewer, incorporating energy and movement, almost as if her paintings are capturing the performance she exhibits while in the very process of creating each piece. “I always paint to a musical background, as it allows me to escape into my creative zone,” she says. And that creative zone requires a seemingly simple set of tools that ultimately create a magnificent treasure. “I used mixed medium acrylic, oil and oil sticks as well as dry brushes and palette knives. I will also sometimes paint with my fingers using rubber gloves.” When she paints, she likes to cut way beneath the surface, taking a shape from a book or something from a magazine, and also draws upon her keen interest in science and technology, harmonizing analytical thought with idealistic daydreams. “I am a deep thinker and enjoy conversations that require me to dig deep,” she explains. Although she has exhibited her work in Europe and the United States, she classifies her efforts as part-time. “This is more of a hobby for me now,” she says. “I work with a private equity firm during the day and do my painting on the side.” However, her paintings are drawing full-time attention. Even though she has only been in the U.S. for less than eight years, she is developing an impressive following. She has showcased her pieces at the Del Mar Art Center (DMAC) and is frequently commissioned by individuals the world over, including Russia, Denmark, Norway, Texas and California. In addition to her artwork, Benot continues to roll up her creative sleeves and is currently working on a clothing design project called Femage - a unisex line of clothing that is based on black and white photography.

“Real Talk San Diego... Your New Business Matchmaker”
Real Talk San Diego Airing weekdays on ESPN 1700AM, Real Talk San Diego is designed to give a voice to local entrepreneurs and business professionals who positively impact communities throughout our region. The various radio shows encompass 16 hours of local programming hosted by various leaders across a number of industries. Although the original intent of the show was to educate the listening audience about local business resources, it has evolved into something more. “We discovered that ourhosts, cohosts and guests were forming professional relationships with one another,” said Executive Producer Brett Ward. “It’s like Real Talk has become a businessmatchmaking service.” Perhaps the best example of this is Solana Beach resident Ryan White, Realtor with the Guiltinan Group, and his cohost Karen Kaseno, Forensic Accountant and founder of The Kaseno CPA Firm. “When I was introduced to Karen and found out what she did fora living, I asked to interview her on my show,” said White. “She provides an amazing service to people in need and I wanted others to know about it.” “Our experience on the show together presented us with opportunities to promote andsupport each other’s businesses,” continued White. “She and I have been able to refer a ton of business back and forth, and Real Talk has allowed us to quickly expand intointo each other’s professional networks.”
After several guest appearances, White asked Kaseno if she’d like to cohost his show. “It was a nobrainer for me,” says Kaseno “He’s a super smart guy. He pays attention to details more than others in his profession. I know my clients are in good hands when I send them to Ryan.” White has been in real estate for 14 years and manages over 100 vacation rentals in the San Diego area, so it’s safe to call him an “expert.” Although he buys and sells properties all over the county, White’s “home turf” is really Solana Beach and Del Mar. “I prefer to focus on my backyard because it’s what I know best, and that knowledge is transferred to my clients and business partners like Karen.” Kaseno has been a forensic accountant for more than two decades and is widely respected in her profession. “I always thought radio was just about appealing to the listeners. I never considered the networking and business building aspects of cohosting a radio show. It’s given me the opportunity to build a group of elite contacts,” said Kaseno. Real Talk San Diego gives a genuine voice to local business leaders who might not otherwise have an opportunity to showcase their business and tell their story.

Is there an ‘Art’
to Stock Market Investing? ARTICLE HARVEY NEIMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
I
nvesting in stocks is not a science. It’s very subjective. But does that make it an ‘art’? A key question I pose in my book, Customize Wall Street, for buyers of stocks to ask themselves, is: “Am I an investor, or am I a speculator?” No matter how you respond to the question, the process of selecting stocks and mutual funds is subjective. You can treat it like running a business, or you can treat it like going to a casino. This applies to individuals like us as well as experienced institutional portfolio managers. As with music, painting, and writing, anything that is primarily subjective can be viewed as ‘art’. Even stock investing can indeed be a thing of beauty, especially ‘in the eyes of the beholder’. You, as an investor, will know whether you’re happy with your stock selections or not. If you are, then it’s a work of art for you. An important part of stock investing is to not judge the ‘beauty’ of your investments by the ups and downs of the stock market. You don’t judge the beauty of your art collection or your favorite music by weather conditions outdoors. Although we never enjoy it, when the stock market drags down the prices of our stocks, it doesn’t mean our investment decisions were not sound. Stated in another way, it’s important to know what we can or cannot control with stock investing. We cannot control the state of the economy or prices of stocks. What we can control is which stocks we choose, the amount of information we gather, the dollar amounts we invest, and how
16
Del Mar Lifestyle | April 2016
long we keep any particular stock in our portfolio. We can also control how we treat distractions. Unique in the world of stocks (and commodities) is the bombardment of continuous price quotations all day long. I strongly recommend that you treat this phenomenon as a distraction to be ignored as much as possible. Price quotes are valuable when you are making buying and selling decisions. They are unnecessary every minute of every day. We do not encounter such frequent price quotations in any other facet of our lives. Our homes, our paintings, our jewelry, even our family businesses are not appraised minute by minute. Ignoring price quotations, except when needed, might help greatly in reducing the stress of our stock investing. In summary, many variables are the same in creating music or painting, as in stock investing. Be disciplined, be consistent, and have confidence in your own judgement. This is true even when running your business or household. This should likewise be true when saving and investing for your retirement, or any other financial goal. I discuss these and other ideas in my book, all designed to reduce the stress of saving and investing, when making investments offered by Wall Street. Yes, I believe there is an ‘art’ to stock investing!

an Diego Opera will present the west coast premiere of American composer Jake Heggie’s new
opera, Great Scott, on May 7. With a libretto by famed
playwright Terrence McNally and direction by San Diego favorite Jack O’Brien, the anticipation for this premiere has been intense after its successful world premiere at Dallas Opera last October. The protagonist, Arden Scott, is an internationally recognized opera star who returns to her hometown to help save the opera company that fostered her opera career, only to find a Pandora’s box of past and present challenges facing her at home. She brings with her the score of a long lost opera, convinced that with the right cast of opera luminaries 18

and changing characters, adding different dimensions to them, or to the story or plot, moving whole scenes around.” Bennett is proud and excited about the groundbreaking premiere. “The piece is a love letter to opera, an honor to the operatic tradition. Jake is emulating other composers with his distinct voice,” Bennett says. “The fact that he had such a success with Moby-Dick, we have an audience that’s open to his musical vocabulary. I think they’ll really like this. It’s accessible in many ways - tuneful, not a stretch for people who are nervous about contemporary music.” Regarding the opera’s combining football with opera, particularly in a city experiencing controversy over the sport, Heggie says, “They are together all the time. A lot of sports fans go to the opera and a lot of opera people love sports. We think of them as separate entities, yet they are both events that involve a community of devoted people who care passionately about them.” Heggie sees Arden Scott as the equivalent of a quarterback for the company. “This great opera singer has to be on her game and perform at top level. The Healthy Living Festival runs April 9-11 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and offers a full day of wellness featuring 30 free workshops, seminars, and cooking demonstrations. More than 200 exhibitors showcase the latest wellness products and Sharp HealthCare offers free medical testing throughout the weekend. “I’m a health nut. I go out and run and bike or swim or do yoga just about every day and I do triathlons several times a year,” says Cook. But he saw a need in an aging population and wanted to do his part. “Seeing how our population grows both in numbers and in girth, I said, ‘You know, maybe I can help out a little bit’.” At 72-years-old, Cook finds that putting on festivals is helping the community and himself. His mother died of Alzheimer's at the age of 81. That loss is motivation for him and reason to help others keep fit and live a healthy life. “Keeping your mind busy…making sure you have lots of contact with people…those are the things research has shown really keep people going,” says Cook. The Healthy Living Festival is designed to help people tackle their health issues and explore new ways to improve their lives. For instance, you can enjoy belly dancing and Zumba shows or take a yoga or Qigong class. Throughout the day, tidbits of wellness information pour out of every single booth. “For me, my posture isn’t that great. So we have a person who does posture alignment therapy,” says Cook. The festival attracts more than 8,000 attendees and is growing larger each year. Having done

festivals for more than 40 years, Cook is highly experienced at bringing in the best exhibitors and attractions that generate interest with both those who are fit and active and those who want to learn how to regain their health. “I hope people get more serious about their own health,” says Cook. He sees the festival, his labor of love, as a way to make an impact on the diseases that afflict millions. “My festival is only a small part because the whole country has a problem.” The good news is the message is getting out. While cancer, heart disease, and diabetes still claim lives, reports indicate that more Americans are physically active. In 2015, only 22.6 percent of U.S. adults reported they were sedentary; that’s an 11 percent decrease from 2014, according to America’s Health Rankings Annual Report: A Call to Action for Individuals and Their Communities. Cook believes you have to inspire enthusiasm to get people interested in living a healthy lifestyle. Coming to a festival where you learn new information, enjoy the activities, and meet others who are improving their lives is just the way to do it. “It’s a celebration of health!” Admission is $10 but free passes are available to print online. HIDDEN TREASURES:
Rodrigo’s Recycled Art ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY NOLA SCHODER
W
e are all familiar with the expression “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. Rodney “Rodrigo” McCoubrey is a master of finding treasure in everyday trash. A self-proclaimed environmental folk artist, McCoubrey takes the negative aspects of waste and reinvents it as fun, positive art pieces. “If it ain’t fun, I ain’t doin’ it,” he says. His Leucadia home/gallery/workshop is a “Fun Zone”, a seemingly endless maze of recycled art pieces. Every turn unveils more colorful masterpieces from McCoubrey’s well-known fish interpretations and custom altars to his Baja California trash series. The stone floor in the main gallery room is designed from bath counter leftovers, and the interior roof of his vintage automobile is “reupholstered” with cloth swatches strewn together. A super-sized Cheshire cat, butterfly and a dodo bird happily greet guests and passersby from the front yard. The open-air workshop in the back reveals troves of debris ready for a new chance to shine. Used street-sweeper blades, snipped zip-ties, bottle caps, old tires, recycled plywood, shoe soles, paint buckets, half-empty acrylics, lost golf balls and toys are a fraction of the unique scraps collected. This extensive assortment of everyday items and discarded odds and ends will artistically transform into eyes, fins, scales, hair or teeth. Textures are an important aspect to McCoubrey’s art. An avid surfer for more than 40 years, it’s not surprising that surfboards have become prominent components of his work. The foam is often repurposed into a bony fish skeleton or body form, and the skin is peeled and fashioned into fish fins. Creating original objects has been a life-long aptitude for McCoubrey. In high school, he was a clay addict and eventually found himself in production ceramics. Even so, his work was unique and reflected his inner sense of FUN. “I’ve always been intrigued by the way things wriggle and shape themselves,” he expresses more clearly with his hands. Fortunately, yet unfortunately, there is no shortage of resources from dumping grounds and construction sites to roadsides and beaches. Being able to give new life to something that was headed to the landfill is a special gift. Some things are recycled three times - now that’s pretty cool! Rodrigo’s Recycled Art can be found in several local art galleries, libraries and in the homes of private collectors. He is actively involved with local schools to promote art programs while also sharing an environmental message with younger generations. McCoubrey hopes to inspire others to think about their spending habits and, more importantly, how they throw things away, “I want to teach people that they don’t need to buy a lot of things. They need to learn where to find things and how to recycle them.” So this Earth Day, take a look at what you throw away! Maybe with a little Rodrigoinspired creativity and some fun textures, there is a hidden treasure waiting to be reborn. RodrigosRecycledArt.com | FishForThought.org 24

xperience the magic of Broadway Nights, April 23 at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar, when supporting fundraising efforts by the Rancho Santa Fe Auxiliary Unit for Rady Children’s Hospital. Over the past 17 years, the Unit has raised over $9.7million for RCH, made possible by the help of sponsors, supporters and countless volunteers integral to the fundraising effort. This year, the Unit is dedicating the annual fundraising gala, Broadway Nights, to the Emergency Department. Funds raised will complete the ED’s Resuscitation Room Project for the Sam S. and Rose Stein Emergency Care Center. The gala will feature a Broadway-style show extravaganza. Imagination Entertainment, the 2013 winner of Special Event Gala Awards, presents their award-winning theatrical production On Broadway, with a cast of amazing musical theatre talents. This onehour production celebrates the biggest hits from Broadway, with gorgeous costumes, stunning choreography, and vocal talent rarely seen outside of a theatre. In addition to the private Broadway-style show, the gala will feature live and mini-live auctions, interactive games, an elegant sit down dinner, and special surprises. The Happily Ever After Party features dancing, late night snacks and dessert. Co-chairs of the gala, Sandra Den Ujil and Shaunna Salzetti-Kahn are thankful for the support this far, and are confident fundraising goals will be met. “The money to be raised is for the resuscitation room, which costs a million dollars. We have already raised some funds and are hoping to meet the goal, but it would be even better if we can over-raise as all monies go back to the hospital!” says Sandra Den Ujil. 26
Del Mar Lifestyle | April 2016
The Rady Children’s Resuscitation Room Project will transform emergency healthcare education at RCH and advance patient care through the availability and upgrading of high-tech equipment for simulation training, rapid diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of critically ill children. Rady Children’s Emergency Care Center will utilize funds raised to meet the ED’s most urgent needs: specialized equipment, upgraded technology and space renovation. Resuscitation is the central function of modern emergency departments and requires the availability and upgrading of hightech equipment for rapid diagnosis, treatment and monitoring. Care is provided in specialized resuscitation bays that are carefully designed to optimize available space and have specially-designed beds, imaging capabilities, and resuscitation equipment. This is the third fundraising gala being hosted so efforts have been on as of the last three years. “We have witnessed strong support from the community with 95% of our previous sponsors coming back. This Unit itself dates back to 1969 and many here are lifetime members. We are 100% volunteer-based so there are no administrative costs and all monies raised go straight to the different projects,” says Shaunna Salzetti-Kahn. About 400 attendees are expected at the gala and tickets are selling out fast so head on over to the event website to do your bit to ensure the RCH ED receives your support! BroadwayNightsGala.com

ince the earliest days of our coastal community, the town of Del Mar has attracted people who were stars in their fields. You’d be surprised to learn the number of notable artists who have made our seaside sanctuary their home! The mark of Renaissance man Herb Turner can be seen all around Del Mar, giving the area a striking contrast to other affluent neighborhoods made up of cookie-cutter McMansions. A protégé of John Lloyd Wright, another Del Mar resident who also happened to be the son of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, Turner described his architectural sensibilities as “terramonics” - he designed his buildings to be in harmony with their natural surroundings. Building his homes on lots other architects considered undesirable, the architect and visual artist typically utilized a good number of windows to give the interior of his homes an “outdoor” feel. He was also a sculptor painter and did most of his paintings in the rarely used egg tempera technique, where colored pigments are mixed with egg yolks. The musical strings to the past are equally strong. A founding member of the band Blink182, which had its heyday around the turn of the millennium, guitarist Tom DeLonge, a native San Diegan, now calls Del Mar home. A man of many talents, he has penned novels, comic books, a children’s book, appeared in numerous films and has even launched his own line of high-end furniture for kids. Bacharach were familiar faces at the Del Mar Racetrack. Bacharach was such a fan of the races that he owned thoroughbreds that raced there. At one point in his life he became a recluse in his Del Mar home due to depression. Although he sold the home in 1980, he and his family often rent a place in Del Mar during the summer months. Rock singer Steve Perry, one of the original members of the 80s era band Journey, is now in his 60s and a proud resident of Del Mar as well. Writer Jonathan Maberry has the distinction of being successful in several genres of fiction, be it horror, thriller, mystery or young adult. Not only is this New York Times-bestselling Del Mar author one of our own, but he’s even got impressive credits in nonfiction, television writing, short stories and comics in addition to having written successful series of fiction books such as the Pine Deep Trilogy and the Joe Ledger series. And rather than resting on his laurels, he believes in giving back to the writing community: he’s a well-known speaker for the National Writer’s Union and mentors members of the Mystery Writers of America and the National Horror Association. Other famous names include Desi Arnaz and J. Edgar Hoover during the golden age of Hollywood as well as present-day stars such as quarterbacks Drew Brees and Carson Palmer, and motivational guru Tony Robbins. With their contributions, these stars, and many, many others, have elevated Del Mar’s remarkable artistic history.
