Home is...

MAY 2016

W

hen we think of home, we often think of a house, the rooms and their contents; maybe with a yard, garage, perhaps a little picket fence. The bathrooms, kitchens and living spaces make a house functional. Often times there are little feet pattering around whether they are furry feet or those of our children. They give the house life. However, what we have come to know is that it is mom who makes the house a home, gives it warmth. It’s no coincidence that our May issue is our home issue and it is also the month that celebrates mothers. In honor of mothers everywhere, we feature a delicious yet easy Mother’s Day brunch that can be hosted at home - it’s perfect for little helpers to get involved. Plus, some great gift ideas for the special women in your life from Tucci Boutique. This is all in honor of the woman who makes your house a home, but we also get to meet with those who add the delightful designs and details that make us happy; interior designer Molly Proul of Molly M O’Neil gives us a glimpse of what is in her office and we get to peek into the new showroom of Lars Remodeling & Design. Home is where the heart is and we hope you love some of the great stories and news in our community we get to share with you this month. We’d love to hear from you and what makes your house a home. Email us or send us a note on social media anytime and we’ll see you around town! Jennifer and Dan Austin

ith Mother’s Day upon us, what better way to celebrate moms, grandmothers, godmothers and the amazing women in your life than by hosting a carefree brunch? This menu is packed with flavor but relatively easy to assemble, enough so that the kids can even help with preparations. Purchase pre-diced and prepared produce, and bake the Lemon Blueberry Buttermilk Cake the night before. This cake is a delicious and fresh alternative to pancakes - add a dab of lemon curd and a dollop of whipped cream or a drizzle of maple syrup. If you want to take this menu to the next level, definitely add a beef tenderloin or spiral ham. Better yet, serve mom breakfast in bed – add a bud vase and some flowers to a plated tray to show some extra love on this special day. Either way, she will relish this celebration! 18

emember the last time you shopped for a mattress? Chances are it wasn’t a fun experience. The mattress you ended up buying might have brought a lot of restful nights but the task of choosing one likely was more a chore. Visit Sleep Bedder, on the corner of El Cajon Blvd and Utah Street in North Park, and you’ll find eco-friendly mattresses that conform instantly to your body and help you get a better night of sleep. You’ll also find numerous unique and locally sourced items from artists. Sleep Bedder seduces you with the same kind of charm that an old-world boutique in a small European village oozes, where cobblestones pave the way to magical treasures you’ll take home and cherish forever. “I went away from the big brand names and sought out vendors that were independent, local, and eco-aware,” says owner Sonia Weksler. As I browse, I can’t help but wonder how long it must have taken to create what feels like such an eclectically curated museum of so many things to see, and all with a history of sustainability. The entire store was made without buying a single piece of wood. An area where community events are hosted, referred to as Camp Kitchen, has a very creative story, which, like the rest of the store, was Weksler’s brainchild. “Camp Kitchen was made from lath that came from a wood scrap box at La Mesa Lumber and the countertops were made from the demolition of the bar across the street that’s now called Barn. The lath backsplash is dyed in Indian spices like turmeric, cayenne and paprika,” says Weksler. Her father gave her the long-time family business, which was located elsewhere in San Diego and had a more traditional “mattress store feel”. However, Weksler had a different vision. She found her current location, which was part of a city revitalization project, aligned with her core values and passion. Now Sleep Bedder is nestled in a corner of a strip mall that forms an eco-friendly community of business owners, including an organic butcher shop, a cold-pressed juice bar, and a hair salon that uses natural and non-toxic products. “I have eco and indie mattresses. It was the perfect completion of this complex,” says Weksler. Sleep Bedder combined the family business with her other passion which she cultivated

in her former business - a pop-up farmer’s market stand, that sold upcycled, eco-friendly, handmade local goods, such as earrings from reclaimed leather, organic essential aroma therapy, and natural laundry detergent. “The premise was that the choices we make today about what we do, buy, eat and wear will stand us in good stead in the future,” explains Weksler. The people who come here form a community with a common goal of improving themselves and the environment. Sleep Bedder offers yoga classes, kombucha classes, poetry readings, art exhibits, acupuncture, and hands-on art projects. Every third Friday of the month, there is a live art exhibit, music, and a pop-up food market in the parking lot to help “bedder” lives. SleepBedderNorthPark.com

This strongly adhered to philosophy has resulted in national recognition with a Remodeling Professionals’ “Big 50” Award, which goes to the Top 50 Remodeling Professionals in the nation, and ongoing recognition as one of the Top 500 Remodelers in the nation by Qualified Remodeler. The company sets itself apart from the beginning of the remodel and design process, with project and interior designers meeting clients in their homes to observe individual tastes and to make creative suggestions based on the clients’ ideas and consideration for comfort and feasibility. Larson states that, in creating the perfect environment for the client, “no style, color, or era is off limits.” With this approach, the company enjoys a large referral and repeat client base. They also employ an impressive breadth of construction and design experts. Larson explains that this is based on the fact that so many factors go into each project and must be attended to individually. “We have a knowledgeable team with experience in all different avenues of remodeling. Kitchens, bathrooms, both first and second story room additions, outdoor living spaces, and whole house remodels - you name it, we have an expert here for it.” Once the final design is determined, Lars Remodeling provides a detailed scope of work outlining the entire project, including costs. This up front approach and transparency contribute to client satisfaction, and what Larson refers to as a worry-free remodel. As embodied in their motto - “Say what you mean and mean what you say. It’s not just a slogan, it’s the way we do business.” Lars Remodeling opened a new Design Center recently, offering an array of design and material finishes for clients to view. The space, which the company remodeled itself, also features a full working kitchen with espresso and wine bars for clients to enjoy. In addition, Lars has partnered with KUSI to produce a weekly cooking segment, which airs on Saturday mornings. To help homeowners understand the remodeling process, the team at Lars created Lars University, a series of workshops covering the complexities of undertaking a home remodel. The company has found that informed homeowners are happy renovators. The slogan of the program - Educate Before You Renovate – says it all! LarsRemodel.com

ur community is home to many unique and stunning properties, but what is outer beauty without inner beauty as well? Nobody understands that better than the team at Lars Remodeling & Design, a community business for more than 25 years and a leader in residential remodel and design, helping many in the Del Mar community create their ideal indoor and outdoor living spaces. Founder and president Jason Larson learned the business from his father, also a home remodeler. He attributes the success of the company to his father’s training and family values, and has built the company based on a philosophy of trust, client focus and communication. “In business as in life, I have discovered that your word is something that nobody but you can take away. My word is my bond and knowing that I have built my business on this foundation allows me to sleep at night,” says Larson.

Financial Buzz

Your Retirement is

Your Home ARTICLE HARVEY NEIMAN

ome is where the heart is! Our homes are our security, our safekeeping, and come into play when we retire. When “home” and “retirement” are used in the same sentence, people usually envision a planned community in sunny climes, driving around in golf carts, dinner at 4:30 p.m. and grandchildren coming to visit for the holidays. Our home, at any age, represents our level of comfort. It’s our domain. So, from my perspective, proper planning and saving for retirement is fundamental for guaranteeing the comfort of a secure home during the twilight years. Saving for your retirement is saving for your future home! Financial planners and advisers are always talking about saving and investing toward a comfortable retirement. To me, the whole idea of planning for an ideal retirement is, first and foremost, that I have a home of my choice during my senior years. Younger folks, in the 20s and 30s, perhaps even in the 40s, are often shortsighted when it comes to saving and investing for retirement. It’s just too far into the future. They don’t want to contemplate having lost their youth. I’ve been there and done that! However, if we can help change that perspective, for people of any age, folks might come to realize that the sooner they start planning for retirement, their chances of having the home of their dreams in later years increases. In my book, Customize Wall Street, I introduce a straightforward, easy to understand method for planning and saving for a secure 30

Del Mar Lifestyle | May 2016

retirement, while reducing stress and worry. Individuals or couples of any age can apply this method. It’s never too late, or too early, to plan for the future. This is not the place to give a full review of my book, but a few key points are worthy of note. First, you will have a better chance of being successful saving for a secure retirement if you implement a plan to follow. This, in itself, will help you reduce stress and worry as you pursue your financial goals. Second, you should look at the big picture world of economics and finance, and identify things you can control and things you cannot control. As individuals, we cannot control the ups and downs of stock markets, interest rates, gasoline prices, or economic crises in Europe and Asia. So let’s not stress so much over things we cannot control. Instead, let’s focus on the things we can control - the more personal things like the amount of money we can afford to set aside toward retirement and the setting of realistic financial goals we feel we can achieve. If we set our own goals, we control those goals. In the book, I pose five key questions we can ask ourselves, the answers to which will help us set goals and implement a plan to achieve those goals. We can even modify our goals and our financial plan when necessary, adapting to the reality of our personal financial situation. This is all designed to help us have that future home that will give us comfort in our retirement years. Home is indeed where the heart is!
