Celebrating Summertime... G
JUNE 2016 publisher
Dan Austin | Dan.Austin@LifestylePubs.com
rowing up, some of my favorite memories of my father were in the backyard, grilling out on endless Summer nights - not a care in the world, enjoying a freshly prepared meal with friends in the neighborhood. A steady stream of family would come by for some conversation and to unwind. This month, we celebrate that same spirit with our Men's Issue...of course, even though the focus is on the guys, it is my wife's attention to detail and finding great local stories to share that brings this month to life. We hope you enjoy this month's issue as we feature an amazing backyard adventure into barbecue. We discover the old fashioned barber shop, just like where my father took me as a boy, is alive and well at V's. No Men's Issue would be complete without a look at our local beer scene and where you can stop in to kick back with a brew. Plus, we get to know one of our newer friends and neighbors here in town - Bunny from Made In Earth in the Del Mar Plaza. Remember to check out our Father's Day gift idea guide this month and you don't have to wait until Father's Day to enjoy some of the best golfing in the world, right here in our backyard, as we spotlight some of the premium private country clubs in North County as well as some of the most exclusive resort hotel courses that will make you feel a world away even though you are minutes from home. Here's to Summer - It's been a busy Spring as you can see from all the events we recap for you to start our June issue. Fair season is upon us again and there is so much to see and do this month. We hope to see you at the Del Mar Village Summer Solstice coming up soon!

ntering V’s Barbershop in Del Mar, the first
impression is that you’ve just walked into an
upscale man cave. At each of the five leather bar-
ber chairs, there is a TV that is tuned to a sports channel. Songs by artists ranging from Frank Sinatra to the Eagles play over a sound system. “We’re way more masculine than the salons,” says owner Scott McDaniel. He explains that their TVs are typically tuned to sports or financial news – whatever the customer wants to watch. McDaniel thinks the main reason his regular clients come here is because they get better service and a better haircut than the

chain shops. Almost all of their clients are men, but they do sometimes cater to women as well. The shop typically runs a shift of four to five barbers per day. Friday and Saturday are the busiest days, and according to McDaniel, they are often booked well in advance. He recommends scheduling an appointment though they accept walk-in business. Just before a holiday, V’s usually sees a spike in customers and they expect to get very busy as Father’s Day approaches. The barbers at V’s are adept at a variety of styles, from haircuts for surfer kids to corporate executives to flattop and the current trend of fades. Along with haircuts, they offer a straight-razor shave, and beard and mustache trims. All of the services are finished with a hot-towel massage and a hot-lather neck shave.

Del Mar Lifestyle | June 2016
McDaniel became a franchisee of V’s in 2010. His first shop was in the San Francisco Bay area. He relocated to Del Mar in early 2011 and opened another shop in Carlsbad/La Costa in May 2015. “I discovered V’s Barbershops on vacation in Phoenix and had such a wonderful experience, I looked around for something similar near me,” McDaniel says. He couldn’t, so he decided to bring that experience to the Del Mar area. McDaniel has noticed a trend toward classic hairstyles – the side part with a tapered neckline – the “clean” look. “Maybe it’s an effect of shows like Mad Men, but I think it’s more of a return to cleanliness on the part of maturing men,” he says. There is also an increase in clients with beards that need to be trimmed. A hard part with a fade is also popular now. Occasionally they get a request for a Mohawk or flattop. His staff focuses on what style works best and takes time talking to the client to figure out what service they want. V’s Barbershop is located just east of I-5 at 2683 Via de la Valle, Ste. H. They recently launched a cell phone app that makes it easy to book appointments. You can also book appointments on their website on VBarberShop.com All photography shot on location by Taylor Abeel | Sojourn Imagery

BACKYARD BBQ Fun Father's Day Menu

athers, stepfathers and grandfathers everywhere will be celebrated this month and there is nothing that dads like more than golfing, grilling and sipping on a craft beer. Treat him to his favorite hobby in the morning and then let him do what he does best - grill - in the afternoon. We’ve put together a simple yet fun BBQ menu perfect for the day. Most of this menu can be prepared ahead of time and just about everything can be cooked on the grill. Simply hand dad a tray of prepped food, the grilling tongs, his favorite beer in a frosted pint and watch his face light up! Absolutely make a double batch of the chimichurri the night before - you will want to marinate the steak overnight and have extra to slather on everything, especially the potatoes. Take the grilled corn on the cob to the next level by making an herbed butter accompaniment. The coleslaw is a unique take on the old standard, one that is fresh and unexpected. And if you have never grilled potatoes or asparagus, simply toss in olive oil to coat, sprinkle with your favorite seasonings and let dad and the grill do the magic.

Respecting Natural Beauty PASSIONATELY DESIGNED JEWELRY

ewelry designer and local business owner Bunny Bedi is bringing semi-precious gemstones from all corners of the world to Del Mar. His handcrafted, one-of-a-kind designs create a jewelry experience that will take you on a journey through Earth’s treasures. Made In Earth was established in 1999 in Melbourne, Australia by Head Designer and Creative Director Bunny Bedi. When asked about how he got his start, he says, “the gemstones found me.” He left his career as a chef and began selling jewelry at boutique flea markets in Melbourne. As his passion grew and his creative side took the reigns, his own creations came to life. Seventeen years later, with four jewelry galleries worldwide and a long list of stockists across Australia, his passion and energy are just as evident. “I couldn't be happier that I am living my passion!” Del Mar is home to the youngest Made In Earth gallery, which launched mid-2015. A walk on Christmas Eve led Bedi to a ‘For Lease’ sign and he felt a sense of excitement. He recognized that feeling from three years earlier when he located his first California store in Venice Beach. “I knew my jewelry would be appreciated by the locals, and it was,” he shares. Bedi listened to his heart and called the agent on the Del Mar sign that night. The Made In Earth line is created with high-quality gemstones as the centerpiece in each design. Each piece is an original work and individually handmade. Bedi says, “We pay respect to the natural beauty within each gemstone and aim to let that beauty shine through.” 24

A stroph yllite rin g from the men 's collec tion
Made in Earth galleries carry the largest collection of gemstones, crystals, meteorites and fossils - over 190 different stones - sourced from the Americas to Madagascar, Greenland to Australia. The galleries host new designs, one-of-a-kind pieces and a team of expert stylists with a wealth of knowledge on their stones. Additionally, stylists can customize designs for a truly unique piece. While women make up the majority of Made in Earth’s clientele, they do cater to men as well, offering a collection of rings, pendants and cufflinks. “This has gained a following over the years. In particular, our meteorites and fossils. Sterling silver gem-set cufflinks have always been something missing from men's accessory collections, so we're here to answer that calling,” Bedi says. This year will see the launch of the ‘Melody Collection’, their largest yet. Made In Earth’s collaboration with Melody, internationally known best-selling author of Love Is In The Earth series, will feature crystals from Melody’s personal collection with Bedi’s signature style. A proud father of two young boys, Bedi is able to share with them some amazing stories through his gemstones and crystals. He even goes as far as to do show-andtell presentations at his son’s class - Last year, he took them back in time by showing them dinosaur bones. Next, they’ll travel to outer space with meteorites! Real Men Invest in
Dividend Paying Stocks ARTICLE HARVEY NEIMAN
W
hether you are an experienced stock investor, or a novice seeking to learn about the mysteries of Wall Street, here is one powerful suggestion I would make to anyone who asks about sound stock investing. I urge serious long-term investors to anchor their stock investment portfolios with dividend paying stocks. We all know that our local shopping centers try to anchor their variety of retail stores with strong, well-known, big name department stores or major supermarket chains. Likewise, our own stock portfolios should contain strength, which includes stock names with good track records of paying healthy dividends over a substantial period of time. Nobody can predict or control the ups and downs of the stock market. The volatility of stock prices is a fact of life, that’s not going away any time soon. Healthy dividend paying stocks tend to be less volatile than stocks that don’t pay dividends. This means that when the stock market goes down, many dividend stocks don’t go down as much as the general market. The opposite is also common. When the stock market makes huge gains, many dividend stocks may not increase quite as much as the market itself. This is not to say that dividend stocks don’t fluctuate up and down, they just don’t tend to fluctuate as extremely as non-dividend paying stocks. So, what does all this mean for the average investor? Back in 1988, Geraldine Weiss of La Jolla, California, published what soon became a classic book, entitled Dividends Don’t Lie. The premise of this book, 28
Del Mar Lifestyle | June 2016
which is still valid today in 2016, is that investing in time-tested ,dividend-paying blue-chip stocks produces the steadiest, most stable gains in stock investing, when compared with almost any other investment strategy. Today, with interest rates at all-time lows, typical interest bearing investments, such as bonds and CDs, are not delivering the returns that investors were used to in the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s. In today’s financial environment, investments that have a better chance of delivering the returns that savers and investors desire are dividend-paying stocks. Another book that has been a classic for more than two decades is Beating the Dow by Michael O’Higgins. Published in 1991, his book soon became, and still remains, a blockbuster best seller. Its simple message was that by building a portfolio of the 10 highest dividend-yielding stocks selected from the 30 stocks of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, an investor would fare better than most professional portfolio managers over the long term. From this book was coined the phrase “Dogs of the Dow”. Over the years, numerous mutual funds, brokerage firms, and investment advisors, have successfully managed stock portfolios, by using this method of selecting dividend-paying stocks. These are a few of the numerous reasons that stocks of financially sound companies, with strong records of regular dividend payments, are more stable investments than just relying on stock tips from friends at cocktail parties. In my opinion, I’d have to say that “real men”, and “real women” as well, invest in dividend paying stocks.
